[Q] Time to think beyond stock? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Questions & Answers

Ive been using stock roms from the time i got my kenzo. Stock roms are great and so much feature rich. The recent launch of MiUi 10 has many interesting features and it has made me think if I should go back to MiUi just for the visual experience. I mean user experience is also important right. What do you guys feel?

Quite a subjective question. I only use miui like a week. I don't the visuals nor the amount of crapware it has.

Agree, few like MIUI and few like me hate it from the core of the heart. I kept my phone in drawer for 14 days until I was able to unlock the bootloader. I can't stand MIUI, I can still use buggy AOSP rom instead of stable MIUI.

Miui gives u good features. Good camera quality, audio experience, battery life too. It also has inbuilt call recorder. But it has stock gapps which u may not use all and consider it as unnecessary bloat.
Even if it has so many features people mostly prefer higher android version and go with custom roms. Coz it has better performance, security and new innovative features and much improved core structure.

As mentioned before, I've never seen anyone neutral about miui. This ROM is made and optimized for xiaomi devices and there are many features only miui can give compared to others. The convenience and the visual experience, the smoothness of miui kept me going back to it again and again - Epic ROM Miui9 was the best build I've tried and used for a 6-8 months. Now I use oreo RR, because this is now on a level to compete user experience with miui... I mean this was... before miui 10.
Now I really hope that both, android P and miui 10 will be ported to this device, and I can try both before decide. I love my oreo setup now, but this is getting boring after months of use...

Its the same thing with me.. Oreo setup with AEx rom is cool bt its getting boring now and all stock roms have more or less the same features. Miui 10 videos are too tempting to give a try wen its out.

Why AOSP/CM over MIUI?

Just a question. I've been using my RN4 for cca. 2 months now and I am really impressed with the device.
My question is; Why would you flash an AOSP/CM/whatever ROM, if MIUI works without problems and the device's speed is really great too?
My last device was LG G2, and there was a big difference in terms of speed between Stock LG ROM (all the stupid apps) and CM, but here, I dont know if you would get that much on speed.
Also, that "free" MIUI cloud backup is great, camera with those effects is cool too. I've not encountered a single problem with my stock/not rooted RN4 (Snapdragon).
There are other cool MIUI features, which are not in other AOSP/CM ROMs included. (maybe in RessurectionRemix but still)
What are your thoughts about this one?
Is there a big difference in speed, camera, battery between stock/not rooted and rooted CM/AOSP ROM?
for me its how they handle notification and multitasking. Too agressive with killing apps. No one finger expand. Outdated emoji support. If they fix all that i'd gladly switch back to MIUI
Imho the UI sucks.
Because MIUI just ****s up the material design, doesn't regard the default notification in AOSP, have aggressive memory management and **** cheetah apps disguised as normal system apps.
If I have to give two reasons for using custom ROM:
1. Overall look and feel of material design
2. Notification handling in AOSP Nougat, it is the most
beautiful thing ever happened to Android.
In the end its users choice whether to stick to stock ROM or flash custom ROM depending on their experience.
Oh XDA censors curse words!!
Cuz their ui is cancerous xD

??????
are aops roms stable anyway?
I use Resurrection ROM 5.8.3 and it is rock-stable. But RR is Lineage-OS-based, not AOSP.
My reason to use a Custom-ROM: with MIUI I can't use my Samsung Gear Fit 2. The Gear-App doesn't start in all MIUI-based ROMs. With AOSP/LineageOS-ROMs no problems.
Miui has lots of bugs that take forever to be fixed.
I think Miui is a way of Xiaomi to spy on users....
MIUI have a lot of spyware in their bloatware apps. Which I don't like.
MIUI is like pre-GraceUX Touchwiz.
Lots of interesting features but not polished, and there's no consistency across the whole UI.
For the free cloud backup, Google's Drive and Photos are better in my opinion, you can sync your contacts and messages as well.
As for the camera, I'm happy with the Camera2API on AOSP ROMs.
Because if you also have an iPhone you don't need MIUI ?
Kidding aside, there's a lot of reasons why AOSP is better than MIUI and there's a lot of reasons why MIUI is better than AOSP.
I personally prefer AOSP (Slim 7 specifically) because of it's speed and general lack of complications.
I don't like being asked by the SMS app if I'd like to send my SMSs to the Xiaomi servers, or my pictures, or every time I'd use some app that used the internet to be forced to accept some privacy policy.
I want Android, clean, no bull$$1t. That's where Slim won my heart. I tried other AOSP ROMs as well but I got disappointed with the lack of responsiveness caused by features that should make your life easier but the phone slower. Also all ROMs using the substratum theme engine have an easily perceived delay in operation.
If you'd like to stick with MIUI, then go for the nougat development version. The increase in responsiveness is considerable compared to the stable version based on marshmallow.
Nonetheless, if you want the same security as on an iPhone or more expensive Android phones, do not unlock your bootloader at all. The simple fact that your bootloader is locked will render your device useless to a thief. Although he may not know that before he steals it...

[POLL] Best custom rom

Hi folks,
Just got my Scorpio few days ago.
I'm not new to recovery twrp custom roms and others.
I was previously on a Zuk Z2 pro with Mokee that was a great rom.
The only thing i noticed on all custom roms is that they are never as much fully functional as the stock rom.
Just a little poll to know about your feelings on all the custom roms available with that Xiaomi Scorpio.
Currently, I'm on miui 9.6.1.0 based on 8.1 .
I've tried also lineageos but i need your feedback.
So just post something like "Best os tested: XXXX" E.G
Especially on ? life i care.
Thanks guys
You can try MiuiPro if you don't mind the fact that you need to pay 1.5 euro a month to download it and the slower updates than other custom MIUIs.
MiuiPro gave me the best performance and battery life for a custom MIUI ROM. Others like xiaomi.eu , mi-globe, miui ms or hellas are good but not as good as MiuiPro seems to be...
If you would consider to really get into a stable custom ROM that is not based on the MIUI sources, the last AEX can be a great choice.
The thing about custom ROMs for scorpio is that almost all of them are based on the same sources, so, you should get almost the same experience with performance and battery in every ROM. AEX is the one that stands out because it has a lot of features that enlightens the user experience.
This is strictly my opinion and the way i see things around here.
Hope you find your perfect ROM. We have official Mokee if you want to try it, you just have to go to their official site. It's maintaned by a chinese guy. I believe it uses his own sources which, from what i can tell , because i've tested it, it's a very good competitor to other ROMs.
Also, enjoy your new phone, welcome to the community and happy flashing!

Heyy
Thanks for your perfect answer.
I will give a look at AEX though.
Thanks!!
I have tried almost any Custom ROM out there for the Mi Note 2: I started with the MIUI-based ones and then moved away looking for something better, without so many customizations.
- MIUI Developer has been a quick-try, but I soon abandoned it. Too much bloatware for my requirements, slow developments and an overall grade of customization that rendered impossible using some android functions. (some examples: android pay, contactless payments with 3rd party apps, biometric advanced unlock not reliable, notifications were a total mess, background apps force-closed by system despite all settings, etc.)
- xiaomi.eu has been a nice start, but it is still very similar to MIUI and without significant improvements. Development is quite constant, but most of the times BUGs are depending on the source MIUI, hence most limitations are the same. Battery life is quite incoherent: for some weeks it may be fine and then for a couple of versions it could be terrific.
- Mi Globe has been another quick-try: it is just a basic MIUI with a bunch of “mods” stacked on top of it, all hold together with a bit of glue and some spare tape. A lot of “smoke” but quite often based on an old core. Definitely something I would not recommend.
- MIUI MS was even worse than Mi Globe in my opinion. Also, main support is non-English based.
- MIUI PRO did not made its way into the list of ROMs I could even consider. If I have to pay for a custom ROM, I would have stayed on Apple. But that is my humble opinion.
- Ressurrection Remix by Stonetrapper was the first Custom ROM that really gave me satisfaction, both with performances and graphical customization. Unfortunately it wasn’t officially supported, so updates were sparse and soon become obsolete. A major problem for me was the incompatibility with most – if not all – GCAM porting.
- Ressurection Remix by PSY was a brief try. I don’t like performances of the custom-tailored kernel by that developer: too much power-hungry. Also, there was the same problem with updates that I bumped into with RR.
- Tesla N was a nice experiment, but with too many bugs and an overall lack of following development. Battery optimization in the end, however, was really nice.
- AOSP Extended was another experiment soon to be deleted: lack of development, too many errors with too many applications.
- SlimROM has been a nice companion for a while, good performance, good battery life. But again, Kernel optimizations were too much power-hungry and in the end has become unstable for my usage.
- crDroid was just a burning star, at least for me. Tried and went over pretty soon. None of the purposed “optimizations” were significant for me, but battery life was among the best.
- dotOS never made its way after day 6 on my device. I wouldn’t recommend it if you are looking for stability.
- CosmicOS was a great ROM, I enjoyed using it while updates were constant. Then It became troubling with more recent apps, and has a lot of problems with recent GCAM ports.
- AEX has ben a kind of “hate-love” for me. Nice customizations, but in the end too many custom choices rendered it difficult to integrate on daily usage for me. (personally I didn’t find it smooth and lag-free as described).
- LineageOS has been my arriving point in all my experience with Custom ROMs: it has a strong Android core bringing all the most recent Android features and functionalities to my Note 2. It is kind of “barebone out-of-the-box” since there is no customization and you will need to tweak and adapt to your needs. It may require more time at the beginning, with a steep learning curve, but on the long term, it is worth the shot. I’m happily using the Official Nightly straight from LineageOS Download Page: updates are constant, performance is exceptional (provided you take time to iron-out some kernel optimizations according to your needs) and battery life is really good. There is full compatibility with GCAM ports (provided of course you pick the one which works best on Mi Note 2) and all Android Core Functions (like NFC Payments, that are crucial for me) works good. Plus, with some Magisk Modules I could choose which aspects – derived from official Pixel – I want to include and I’m really happy with the final result.
Please note that this is just a brief summary of my personal experience with the aforementioned ROMs, and thus it represents a personal opinion that has no intention whatsoever to diminish and/or deny and/or belittle he hard work of all developers.
I hope my experience could help you finding the best ROM for your needs.

Wow what a full answer !!
I was previously on CM13 with my OPO, and move to Mokee on my Zuk Z2 Pro so LineageOS would be pretty simple for me to deal with it.
I currently trying the miui latest based on Android 8.0, and it seems fine, but indeed, the customization is not as much easier that on LOS (CM Based).
I will go with LOS latest though and provide some feedback.
But what about camera ? I've read here and there that all custom roms are suffering from camera issues.
What is the best alternative to make it work properly ?
And, which Magisk module do you recommend ?
Thanks !!

MIUI GSI

Hey guys, I found this
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/gsi/MIUI/
Do you think this images could work on our device?
Why did you get a mi a3 if you wanted miui? Redmi note 7 or mi 9cc have miui.
And why would you actually want memeui on your device in the first place.
Better to stick with something with little bloat

Because of the features, I know some people who prefer MIUI over stock because of some of the features that it provide. There are people who likes the MIUI look than the stock look. I know people who really adore the so called "bloatware". Also MIUI used to provide better battery life than stock android back in the day, but I don't know how's that situation right now.
That should explain your "Why?" concern

And so ..... Will it work or not? Because your answer does not solve the question at all. I'm glad you're happy with Android stock, but there are other people who want to try MIUI (by the way, calling it MEMEUI wasn't funny the first time, so you can end calling it that way) so just let other people do whatever they want without judging them..
Stock android is really boring compared to miui. I always root so adverts are not a problem. Miui has matured into a very good rom, which useful features & battery life. I wanted to give android one a try, but so far not impressed. I am sure its the same way many others feel too. You can move from miui to aosp (treble) but cant move from Android One to Miui, which makes me admit that Miui phone is even a superior choice.

Whats the best custom ROM by now?

Hello
I just changed the battery of this fabulous smartphone which I've been using for several years.
It recently started to give problems and I was charging it several times a day so I decided to change my phone for a newer one and after that I bought the battery to change it to the Xiaomi and to give it a second life using it as replacement phone.
I've been using the whole time the provided official global ROM, but now that it was left behind without updates, I was wondering what is the most advisable custom ROM in terms of stability, battery consumption and newest android version. I know this might be a very wide question. However I have no experience in the world of custom ROMs, although I guess I can manage to install one to the give the phone a newer oportunity.
Any advice? Thank you in advance.

I can tell Im around custom ROMs for a very long time. My all time favourite is crDroid because it's in the market since ages and has very solid name. Very solid performance as well. Lot of customizations but smooth at the same time. If you don't care about customizations, other good option is LineageOS (mother of all custom ROMs actually, and crDroid is based on it too).
What Id like to stress out - you have even Android 12 available, but it lags like hell on mido aka Redmi Note 4. Better option for this old device is Android 11, and best one in my opinion - Android 10. True, you won't get updates anymore, but you have fully operational, smooth as silk performance. I've been switching between versions so Im speaking from experience.
Feel free to ask for any other details.

If I want to try android 12L which one do you recommend the smoothest experience for better daily use (no gaming), I mean for social media, browsing, watching youtube, etc. Hope for battery life too.
For a long time, I've used Havoc OS (v4.16 Android 11 now) + Fussion Kernel.
Thanks

Probably LineageOs since it's most lightweight. But I've tried it some time ago too and it was lagging as well. Maybe something changed since then, but honestly I think that mido just can't handle A12 well

Hello, thank you for your experienced opinion.
I don't think I need a very customizable ROM so it seems LineageOS might seem the best option. And following your advice, android 10 could be enough for the device since I prefer it to be lightweighted.

Question Suggest me best custom ROM?

AFAIK, pixel plus ui for mojito is dead. LineageOS is besto rn
I didnt try recent updates of Lineage but it seems very good when i try it a couple months ago. Pixel Os very good but have Safety Net issues as Pixel Experience, already fixed in Feb update but not available yet. Arrow Os is clean af, not having the safety net issue and only bug that i could think of is PUBG force closing but nobody knows anything about Feb update yet. YAAP and Statix Os are good too, Statix already with Feb update and safety net working fine. All of them except Pixel Experience share the same group of devs, so are very good roms indeed and use Neternels kernel which in my opinion is the best. Im on Pixel Experience with Neternels kernel right now waiting for the Feb update on any of those roms to switch and stay hopefully.

miui is best rom for people who can't try roms and create their own opinion about them
now , of course... the correct question may be... Which ROM do you people recommend? and users can reply with their favorite ROM...
but nah... laziness first Which is the Best ROM of all universe ??
and is extremely tiring finding this question everywhere every 10 minutes
and also making VS like this is a fight to dead... Just use whatever you want dude

Yeah thats right. The only thing that is bugging me about miui is the ram management, i didnt have any serious bug while using it. Trying to find best rom is tiring too, sooo, is you dont have any bugs and want every app working without problems stock is king. If not custom roms are always a better choice than miui.

apart from ram ... miui is soooo damn laggy
it's imposible to use! the most long i stayed on miui was 10 minutes!
and yeah you're totally true... finding a perfect rom is tiring... a lot of clean flash and time spent on testing
so at the end i choose lineage... (not only self promotion) just i want something simple to use rather than thousand of customizations.
Custom ROMs are a must on a Xiaomi Device

Yeah the performance is kinda random, some days is fine and the others day lagging af. I found that the miui version worth using is the factory one, works like a charm compared to updates but is outdated as hell. The thing i miss the most is the speakers sound quality, always trying to come back but i cannot stay there for more than a day now haha. Your rom is very good, i havent tried the recent updates but was the first i installed for mojito where Summoners Wars worked without any problems

miui is best rom for people who can't try roms and create their own opinion about them
now , of course... the correct question may be...

There is NO BEST ROM.
It depends on what "you" want.
If you mean the most stable, then stock, as @alonsoj636 said.

I actually said it as a joke.
MIUI is the worst ROM ever
unstable , buggy and laggy AF
but can be good for people who can't make their own opinion about roms and keep asking for the best hehe

Thats right. If he wants to use MIUI i recommend the first rom for his model. In global is 12.0.2, fast (compared with other versions, gaming is stable. Ram management the same sadly. Cons is android 11 and outdated security patch, idk how much troublesome could that be from a normal user security perspective.

people which do not know much about technology do not care too much as i saw phones of family and friends with 1-5 years outdated security patch and with sensitive information but they do not care too much.
me as a cyber-security maniac i'm always looking the latest security patch and best security tips so using old miui is a hell no for me (miui is a spyware/adware by itself)
