Permanent unlocked TMobile note 8. Lost some features - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

Hey guys,
I lost some features on my note 8 unlocking my TMobile note 8. Anyways I can them back?

What features are you missing because I have a permanently unlocked T-Mo Note 8 and I didn't notice any features missing after the unlock went through.

all depends if you went to a mvno or other carrier dependent services. that's the only that occurs.

I am no longer using T-Mobile, I am using MintMobile and unlocked the phone (there was no reason to do an unlock, I just wanted too because I am going over seas and want to use EU SIM)
But before I unlocked my phone all these options were working
Samsung Facetime
and WiFi Calling
These are the two I noticed that are gone. Now that WiFi calling is completely gone, its a huge game changer for me. Anyways I can get that back? There is nothing available in the settings....

Well I was and still am using Mint Mobile. The phone was locked for T-Mobile and all the features worked just fine. I figured I would unlock it for my upcoming trip to the EU. Now all the features such as WiFi calling are no longer in the settings and I cant toggle them on and off, which is a huge bummer.
Thank you,
Newjack

wifi calling is carrier dependant and that's one that your current carrier doesn't support even if device does. call mint and ask if they include wifi calling in service plan.. as far as flow, samsung techs can assist soley.

Your service provider does offer wifi calling. Gotta check your fist 8 of imei see if it's on note 8 list.
Wifi calling is in settings > connections> more connection settings and wifi calling should be in the bottom. I have a unlocked Tmobile note 8 on metropcs and it works.

My TMO Note 8 is unlocked and I recently went to the Isle of Man for the TT and was on Sure the whole week ... Wifi calling worked fine. It's carrier dependent. I had no issues at all.

SM-G965U1 - Enabling Volte/Wi-Fi Calling

Sorry for the noob question, just got the unlocked version of the S9+. I have build G965U1UES2ARF4. Read some stuff on other forums, thought I had it figured out, but got confused as I read more.
I would like to enable Volte/Wi-Fi Calling. I understand I have to flash AT&T firmware via Odin. I am not clear on what files and how to do it on Odin. Any help would be appreciated.
Also, if I flash to AT&T, do I lose whatever comes with my current ARF4 build? For example, I have FM radio enabled. Do I lose that because I am going over to the AT&T firmware where I think it is disabled? Is my phone no longer unlocked? Do I get bloatware?
Last question, when I flash, is it the same as a factory reset?
Any help appreciated. Thanks.

You will not able to use wifi or volte on an unlocked Galaxy s9, even if you install the att firmware, I tried. Some have reported if you have an att branded phone with sim give that IMEI number to att support and then transfer the sim to the Galaxy and it may work, I have not tried it. Wifi and Volte will work with t mobile with no problems, I have not tried Verizon.
I have an unlocked variant on Verizon. With their firmware, VOLTE and Wi-Fi calling will work, but not video calling.
Wifi calling will not work on unlocked version with Verizon VoLTE will work

There is a hack for that which I use: Place your line's SIM in a real Verizon device. Leave it in long enough that the VZW website sees the line as the new IMEI and device model (should only take a couple minutes). Go into Service Blocks and remove the block on Video Calling. Put the SIM back in the original device). Voila. You've got Video Calling.
The system doesn't care to check once the line is activated. But if it's activated with a U1 device, it turns that block on. If you use this hack and turn the block off, they never check.

I went to the AT&T store the other day and they already had the IMEI from my Galaxy. So I wonder if I switch from an AT&T branded phone back to the Galaxy that the IMEI number of the Galaxy will just re-register.

It will. But it's more manual. Verizon will pick up the new IMEI automatically. My understanding is that AT&T will require a call in to support while the SIM is in the real AT&T device. You ask them to associate your line with the new IMEI while it is still in the genuine device. Once that's done, you can move the SIM to the device you really want to use.

Thanks. One concern is that Wifi calling is nowhere located on my unlocked Galaxy. I was hoping it would be disabled somewhere but it's nowhere to be found. Do you know once I pop my SIM back in if a WiFi calling option will just appear somewhere in the settings?

I wish I could help on that. With Verizon, the menu is there in the firmware at all times. As is video calling. Maybe AT&T hides it until the provisioning checks out. I don't know.

Yes, and Secure Wi-Fi has now been added. I think it previously existed only on the European firmwares. Now we get it, too.
Any way to see if AT&T Wifi Calling will work as I do not see the option in Settings? I have US Unlocked GS9 on AT&T
If I flash this U1 for my ATT phone (running full Tmobile firmware now),
will I have Wifi calling with Tmobile? Or Wifi calling only works with Verizon with U1

Despite what the websites like to post, there really isn't a VZW U1 and an ATT U1. There's just XAA U1. You'll get Wi-Fi Calling on every carrier with it now, except for ATT.

Reading up on it (short summary) this is because AT&T uses a database of IMEI numbers to provision WiFi calling and VoLTE. Since our IMEI numbers from our phones are not in that database we won't be able to use WiFi calling or VoLTE.
Makes sense but is ridiculous for AT&T to restrict it. Has anyone ever called to ask to have thier Unlocked IMEI added to this "list" so that these features will work? Seems like it is a disadvantage for AT&T if it works for TMo and now Verizon but not AT&T...?
Just curious...

It's odd for sure. Verizon has always had VoLTE on unlocked too. At least since the S7. Probably before that. ATT has never felt the need to change the policy.

Who can say if it's disadvantageous or not, for all we know it might be the technology differences between the networks. Also it does make sense... having specific IMEI numbers known to connect to carrier specific services like wifi calling and VoLTE ensures that everything works. It doesn't make it convenient for us and I will admit it would be nice to have the features.. but for calling via wifi there are options.
Personally I use pbx in a flash and bria softphone. With the right VoIP provider it's a good setup and doesn't break the bank at all. I haven't even spent more then 5 bucks maybe in a month. For me this is better then wifi calling and I don't have any problems.
As for adding our IMEI to that database I tried inquiring about it, but I do recall reading where some people may have had luck in doing this. I suspect it may require a bit of luck and/or perserveriance after my last discussion with AT&T customer service.
I explained the situation and what needed to be done while being placed on hold a few times. As the call continued I tried to be patient with the person I spoke too, but I admit it is not easy when he is saying that just because I see H data speed that it's actually VoLTE. When I mentioned the speed test and how it was H data speed (and that H data speeds are not VoLTE) he was saying that H data speeds were like blazing fast compared to LTE..
I had to politely finish the call before I either started to laugh or feel sorry for that rep.

In my case I tried to be patient with the person I spoke too. After waiting on hold a few times the representative tried to say everything was normal.. and then proceeded but to say that just because I see H+ speed that it's actually VoLTE. The only thing I've seen some people do successfully to get VoLTE working on an unbranded unlocked device is to have AT&T provision a SIM card to an IMEI of a phone that is AT&T branded and capable of VoLTE. Then use that SIM card on the unbranded unlocked device.

Hd voice always worked on unlocked for Verizon. Wifi calling is found in the phone app's settings.
I flashed G965U1UES3ARI1 for XAA to SM-G965U1 and I can't find settings for Wifi calling. Are they visible or just built in and assumed to be there?

No problem. You're not the first person to look for it in the wrong place. U1 builds always place the setting there. So they stayed consistent doing it this way.

I have an unlocked S9+ originally from T-Mobile. WiFi Calling is gone.

OK, so I was with T-Mobile forever, and I bought this phone from them at launch. I decided to switch over to MetroPCS by T-Mobile because it's cheaper, so I paid off my phone then unlocked it (Even though I didn't need too, the Metro SIM worked in it before I unlocked it).
It worked fine for two weeks, and I had WiFi calling and everything, and then the RJ5 (I believe?) update came out, and when my phone booted up it said new sim detected, and WiFi calling was gone. My APN settings were set to MetroPCS', so I set it back to the T-Mobile one since it's essentially the same network, but the WiFi calling option is *completely* gone; it's not there, trust me. I call MetroPCS support and they said they can't enable it for devices that weren't bought from them, and I tried to argue like sure you can, send it up to a higher level support team, but I could hardly understand her and gave up.
I went into a MetroPCS store and they had a spare T-Mobile SIM, popped it in, boom WiFi calling was back.
Come OneUI Pie update one, I opt in and update, and voila, WiFi calling is back!
I just downloaded the second update last night, and now it's gone again. This **** is driving me crazy, if anyone can help me figure out a way to fix this I will love you forever.
Wow, that was a gripping good yarn! I think there's a good chance that if you switch to the unlocked G965U1 firmware, it might work. I have an unlocked Verizon S9+ running on TMO, and once I flashed it to U1, wifi calling and volte worked automatically. I'm not positive how it will be with Metro but it is worth looking into. When you flash the collect unlocked firmware, when the phone boots up it will detect your sim and then reboot and configure all the settings for you.
P.S. I don't suppose there's Metro firmware out there?
I don't think there's Metro firmware, because my updates still come from T-Mobile. T-Mobile owns Metro. So what you're saying is flash the firmware via Odin and my phone would be like truly unlocked and I would get updates from Samsung rather than T-Mobile? I don't want to go through all this if it isn't a a certain fix, but sadly there's no way to tell that.

For some carriers, the Wifi calling requires the phone to have carrier firmware. Verizon is one. I bought my 9+ from Samsung unlocked, and it didn't have wifi calling on Verizon until I reflashed the phone (using Patched ODIN) to a Verizon firmware and Wifi calling works... as does the Verizon bloat, but most of that can be disabled with Package Disabler pro or similar app.

I don't think MetroPCS has it's own firmware for the s9+. Plus, they're owned by T-Mobile now. The plan I'm on is called MetroPCS by T-Mobile lol. This is driving me nuts.

Out of curiosity I read around a little bit and it seems to be really hit and miss, which definitely seems to match up with your experience. I did find this post on Reddit from someone saying they got Wi-Fi calling to work with a Metro Sim: https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/co...g_volte_not_working_with_metropcs_sim/cymnvhf

I have not, thanks for the link, I shall try that. Funnily enough, there was a hotfix pushed out last night and WiFi calling not working was on that list. I now have the WiFi calling icon in the notification bar, and it shows like it's on, but it doesn't actually work, and me pressing it does nothing. The setting itself still isn't in connections or anywhere in the settings. This is so dumb, lol.

Just want to confirm that the Moto G Power works on Verizon in the USA. I see it has been rooted and such so this looks like my new phone to replace my trusty Shamu.
Thank you,

Edit: I contacted Verizon via Twitter and they confirmed it will work on their network. C&P their reply...I appreciate the prompt response. Thanks for clarifying this information for me. I reviewed information internally and the Moto G Power XT2041 is compatible with our network. Does this help answer your question?

I recently purchased this phone unlocked through best buy. How/where can I download Verizon firmware to utilize wifi calling? Google, Verizon and Motorola have ran me on circles trying to solve this.
Bestbuy sells both the unlocked version and the Verizon version. Obviously the Verizon version would work with wifi calling, but what about the unlocked version?

I have the unlocked version and it doesn't come with Wi-Fi calling. It runs only the android 10 software and Google apps for the messages and phone. I found a setting for wifi messages (though I've been having trouble sending and receiving) but no setting in the phone app or the device settings.
I'm hoping if I can find the Verizon firmware to download and enable wifi calling.

Check under the advanced settings in the mobile network settings. If it's not there, then Verizon might be blocking it. Cricket does the same thing, but they'll sometimes enable it for you if you ask nicely.

I have checked under those settings and there is nothing listed as Wi-Fi calling. On VPN and Private DNA.
Would you be able to give a screen shot or write out what you click on to see where out phones differ? Baffling why my phone doesn't not have that option and Verizon has been no help in figuring it out.

Looked in advanced setting under mobile connections no wifi calling choices. Any help would be greatly appreciated
I do not have this phone but i used unlocked phones (3 different ones) on Verizon. Currently a razer 2 on Verizon. If you do not buy a carrier locked phone from them you can not have wifi calling. That is one perk of buying the phone from them. They will let you have volte but thats about it. , No visual voicemail either.
I understand this might be a dumb question, but why is WiFi calling so important? I would have thought most people would use Hangouts, Zoom, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Duo. Any of those effectively provide WiFi calling.

This is for a older person who is not tech savvy. The person just wants to make calls and not have to setup any of those other apps, too complicated.

WiFi calling is very handy if you use your phone in places where you might not have reliable cell coverage but do have WiFi (e.g., a basement, etc.). I've never tried it, but that might include an international location where you can't use cell but have access to WiFi.
My carrier is Sprint, and I can verify that the WiFi calling function is present under Settings, Network & Internet, Mobile Network, Advanced, and nestled under "Calling"

It was in a brand new phone yes, but no I don't think it matters. Should be good to go. If anything just restart the phone.
It's also my understanding that Verizon does not allow any Advanced Calling features on a carrier unlocked phone. With my last phone, however (Z4), I was able to flash the VZW image to enable those features on my unlocked phone: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ng-and-root-with-xt1980-3-on-verizon.3994025/
I just tried a similar process with the Moto G Power. I have a XT2041-4, which I have bootloader unlocked. I then downloaded the VZW rom from lolinet: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/sofia/official/VZW/
and patched the boot.img using Magisk. I then followed this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/moto-g-power-flashing-guide.4159301/
to flash the VZW image (XT2041-7) onto my XT2041-4 (including the patched boot.img). Fingers crossed.... And bootloop. So I recovered to RETUS via LMSA. But I haven't given up hope yet. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Question Will TMobile sim work in new metro locked n20?

I know with the op n200 metro version you could put your T-Mobile sim in and unlock the phone to work with TMobile automatically, I can't find confirmation anywhere if this works with the n20 as well, does anyone here know?
I just tried with a T-mo sim card in Metro by Tmo N20 and it didn't work

Was the n20 brand new and the T-Mobile sim inserted before turning the phone on the first time? I read that's how it works on some older phones, I think metro blocked it finally but was hoping it might still work.

yes, I received the phone in mail this afternoon, Brand new and first boot was with T-mobile sim, no service and Mobile network status showed "Disconnected"
The Boot animation did change to T-mobile on a reboot with the sim inside but still no service
As I was playing around with the phone, I stumbled upon a weird way to get signal by trial and error got 4G and 5G data as well but when Wi-fi connected, data seems to switch back to 2G. Let me know if you want to know how

Sure, here it is:
1. Boot the phone with T-mo sim inside the device, once booted you wouldn't have any signal
2. Go to "Sim info & settings" > "Preferred network type" and choose "2G/3G(Automatic)"
3. Reboot the device, once booted you should see signal along with 2G icon
4. Now go back to "Preferred network type" and select "2G/3G/LTE(Automatic)", you should now have 4G (Texts and data works but call dropped)
5. Now switch to "2G/3G/LTE.5G(Automatic)", you should see 5G network (Texts, calls and data all worked fine)
5G was stable for several hours until I connected to Wi-fi and when I disconnected Wi-fi, I noticed that data said 2G.
Let me know if the above steps worked for you

Was the n20 brand new and the T-Mobile sim inserted before turning the phone on the first time? I read that's how it works on some older phones, I think metro blocked it finally but was hoping it might still work.

Did you get an incompatible SIM error, or just no signal? Also, you can't just put a Metro SIM in a phone and have it work. You have to call them and tie the IMEI of the phone.

I was able to test it and the tmo sim doesn't work. you only get edge signal.

If you got any signal, then it should work. Try changing the APN settings manually

OP is talking about the other way around, T-mo sim in a Metro device
Nord N200 had a bug where the device could be locked to Metro but worked flawless with T-mo sim.
That bug being patched is what OP meant by "blocked"

Yeah, I got that backwards. But if he's not getting an incompatible SIM error with a T-Mobile SIM in the MetroPCS phone and actually getting an edge signal, maybe add a new T-Mobile APN profile. Should work in theory.

Thanks! Good find! Yes I was able to reproduce the behavior. Also in my case it seems that the 5G/LTE will revert back to 2g after some idle time. But I can use the airplane mode to repeat the process (without rebooting the phone) to repeat the process. I was able to reproduce on another metro phone as well. must be some kind of loop hole.

I know I already mentioned this, but did you try making a new T-Mobile APN profile and deleting the old one(s)? Maybe you wouldn't have to go through that ritual. might work, or not.

I just factory reset my device and tried this, deleted existing APN and added T-mo APN, doesn't seem to work
I take it you're not a MetroPCS customer. Must be something baked into the OS. I wonder if it still has the MetroPCS bloatware since it booted with T-Mobile boot animation? Anyway, there are services on eBay that will unlock this phone through the MetroPCS unlock app. I'm not selling anything just letting you know that's an option if you didn't already know.

It installed the T-mo bloatware and removed metro bloatware as soon as it booted. Yeah, I'm not a Metro customer, I'll usually just leave it alone for 180 days and unlock it afterwards

Ah, but you need active service on it for those 180 days to be eligible to unlock it no? And now that it has T-Mobile firmware how can you unlock it from Metro? I'd download the MetroPCS unlock app from the play store and run it to see what it says.

In theory, it's 180 days of active service but in reality, they've been unlocking 180 days after activation. I pay for first month and then throw it back in the box.
Also, I didn't see the unlock app as part of bloatware, its built into settings > about. It'll pull up the same screen as in Unlock app and we can try to unlock from there but obviously, throws the error showing it needs 180 days of service to unlock and is not eligible currently

On eBay it's 75 bucks to unlock. Thats like 2 months of service and you'd be able to use it in a few days instead of having a paperweight for 6 months. Thats what I did on my old Moto One 5G Ace.
