Poco F1 MHL / HDMI ? - Xiaomi Poco F1 Questions & Answers

Hi !
Before buying the pocophone F1.
I need to know if we can connect the phone to hdmi tv.
MHL ? dp alt mode (display port alt for android)?
Is there any way to display the pocophone on tv ?
I want to use this feature to play emulator on big screen, and on the go.
If someone can try this for me... Thanks !

There is a "wireless display" option which will allow you to mirror your phone screen on your wireless TV. The image quality is not the best but it does the job.

That function works really nicely with my Chromecast.
I gather (though I've not tried it) that usb-c allows cabled screen mirroring too, if that's your thing.

Hey ! thanks for your answers. i don't want a wireless solution (already have a chromecast) but too much lag for gaming...
I need someone to confirm (and tried it) that i can connect a USB to HDMI cable in order to mirror screen the phone on tv.
Thanks

@F4T4LITY
As above, I've not tried it, but here's an interesting link to some info on usb-c and Alternate mode. It kind of suggests that any phone with usb-c, given the right cable can do the trick.
This would do it, I reckon

Thanks for the link buddy ! I check that !
EDIT : it's not for all phones, the usb c port of the phone need to be compatible with alt mode (display port alternative mode), then just a cable usb c to hdmi will work.
But with all my research i can even know if the poco f1 hac a usb c port supporting the dp alt mode...
I saw an interesting way, with display link adapter. It s usb external graphics cards, mirroring your phone on tv. But the problem is, with android phones and this technology, you can't mirror on tv AND charge your phone at the same time... :/
If someone has tried something else to connect the poco f1 to a tv.
Let me know, even if it s a fail !
Thanks guys !
EDIT 2 :
For information : I bought my poco F1, i ll get it tomorrow with the hdmi adapter.
I will post you the answer to the question : is the pocophone capable of mhl, dp alt-mode or hdmi out.
i will give you also tomorrow the links to the cables i bought for the test.
If the adapter doesn't work, i will buy a Display link technology adapter, then i will say you if we can charge at the same time as mirroring to the tv.
See ya !

OK i ve done the test ! the USB C to hdmi cable DON T Work with pocophone F1 !
There is no MHL, Dp alt mode in the pocophone !
I will buy now a display link device (usb external graphic cards) to mirror my phone throught HDMI.
I ll keep you informed if i can mirror hdmi AND charge at the same time with the "display link" device.
See ya !

Missed it by that much....
I tested mine out on USB-C to HDMI this morning too but F4T4LITY beat me to it....
Confirming it didn't work...

Bummer! Wonder if some bright spark might work out a kernel hack or some other workaround to get this working? I just found a thread on Mi forums asking about it so plainly others are interested...
Might be worth submitting a feature request for a future update. Do other Xiaomi phones have this?

unfortunately, it s a hardware issue... in the poco F1 usb c. none update can change that.
But For info : I don t need to buy a display link hardware. I bought a Chromecast ULTRA (with the ethernet port) and it work flawlessly even in gaming.
My poco F1 >> Wifi 5Ghz >> Chromecast ultra (ethernet)
I can mirror my phone and charge at the same time ! no more problem here for my use !
It s a shame to don't have mhl or hdmi on phones today... it must be standard... but i got the chomecrast backup solution so... it s ok.

#ro.hdmi.enable=true is commented out, maybe some can investigate what it does if enabled

any news yet?

I'm interested too.

Up .. Any news ??

Sry guys nothing works with cables for now...
Got the ultra chromecast solution and sincerly it does the job. I can play ppsspp, or gamecube, psx,...... Full speed even on tv (wireless) or on the pocoF1.

Found out Poco doesn't support TV out after I bought it. My USB C-HDMI dongle was working flawlessly with LG V20 but not with Poco F1. My Tv doesn't have WIfi inbuilt so can't mirror wirelessly either. Bummer! Now only two options are there either buy Miracast/Chromecast dongle(wireless) or Displayport dongle(wired). Removing important useful functions doesn't really make cheap phone appealing.
Edit: Also, I found these dongles for cheap online. If any one has one can he/she check? https://www.aliexpress.com/item/NEW...splay-Graphic-Adapter-for-PC/32824881352.html

Got some USB-C earphones, it was a whim, they also aren't supported by the USB-c port....
This looks to be another cut corner to reduce the price , though is it hardware or software?
There may be a chance if it is only software....

HDMI Mirroring

I ordered the MHL adaptor from T-Mobile's website yesterday, so I should get it today (yeah, I paid the extra $6 for overnight shipping).
Does this phone support FULL mirroring (i.e., when plugged in to TV, TV screen mirrors whatever is on the phone's screen)? I used the full HDMI app on my Evo 4G, and it was great for watching shows from HBO GO on my TV.
Has anyone tried it yet? If not, is there a review out there somewhere that specifically demonstrates this feature?
I guess I'll know tonight when I get home from work!
Thanks,
Rob
I haven't seen it specifically on this phone, but I've seen the Qualcomm MSM8660 demos showing full mirroring. We should be capable of it, but I haven't tried it out yet.
I'm surprised nobody's tried it yet!
Can you use the normal micro HDMI or do you have to buy the adapter to use HDMI? Lol kinda confused how this works with the new port? Could anyone explain? Thanks
You need to buy an adaptor. Basically, it's a dongle that plugs into the USB (charger) on the E3D. The dongle/adaptor has a HDMI port on it, along with a USB port. You plug an HDMI cable into the HDMI port, and into the TV. You plug a charger into the USB port and into the wall.
So no, the HDMI cable from the EVO 4G (I have one too) won't work.
Does that help?

Thanks for clearing that up!!
Back to the issue at hand... does it do HDMI mirroring or not? I have this bad ass HDMI integration in my Prius that is preventing me from upgrading from the 4G until at least HDMI mirroring is confirmed.

According to this demo from CTIA it appears it can, but this is unfinished testing hardware/firmware so it's still not a confirmation:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ynmqtopi9g
This doesn't exactly give you an answer with the level of certainty you are looking for but it's a good sign. We should see some end users with feedback on HDMI features on the production phone streaming in any time now that hopefully confirms that it can do this across any application without problems or limitations.

hey rtmeikle . I also got the mhl from tmobile. I hooked it up last night to sadly find out that hdmi mirroring is not supported at all. It was all a big hype it appears. Were you able to get it working? I'm hoping that you were so maybe its just my device....if not, then this phone is going back.
Yep, I got mine yesterday and tested it. It works fine.
You have to have the adaptor plugged in to the phone, a charger plugged to the adaptor, and the HDMI cable running from the phone to the TV.
I got full HDMI mirroring which automatically switched to landscape when I tested Netflix and HBO Go.

interesting. thanks for the quick respond. When i connect it to my hd tv all i get on the phone is a message that says *HDMI play a video or slideshow to display via hdmi* on the notifications bar. When I click that, nothing happens...

Strange. The image of my home screen just popped up on my TV; I didn't have to do anything.
I tested it on the TV in my bedroom, a 3-yr-old Samsung 42" Plasma, nothing fancy.
Maybe tonight I'll test it on my other two TVs and see if it works on all of them.
did you allow the latest OTA upgrade or did you cancel it? I allowed it as soon as I turned the phone on. I also tried it on my 58 samsung plasma hdtv. Its not that old but also not that new.
I'm going to try it tonight on my smaller 32 inch lcd hd tv to see if that makes a difference. It shouldn't though.
Not like it matters since all MHL cables are the same but here is the MHL adapter I'm using: http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/AddOns...4ec1-a08e-e133fa772d53&inCart=True&catCode=23

Yep, I've accepted the OTAs. And I'm using the exact same adaptor. Did you plug power into the adaptor too? I didnt' try without plugging it in, but I've heard that it needs to be plugged in to work.
Ok, i finaly got it to work. It wasn't a problem with the phone but a problem with the tv. I had to change some resolution settings on the tv and presto! Hdmi mirroring on its full glory
Now, do you know if I can pair up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse? Thats next for me.
Thanks for all the help.

This is what I am currently doing. I have hooked up the following.
Mouse: Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000
Keyboard: Logitech MX5500 Keyboard
The keyboard works great. I can type in the applications and setup my keys in the emulators just fine (snesoid etc)
Mouse functionality though is different then you may expect. You don't get a mouse cursor, it just "highlights" selections then you "left click" to go forward. According to my research the right mouse button is supposed to "go back" but is not working for me.
I put up a thread asking others for help with it, so if I find an answer I will let you know.
Updating you on what I found out about the mouse.
"Well it looks like the fancy mouse support with a cursor and button functionality was something that was included in CyanogenMod 6.X then removed on CyanogenMod 7.
They then added a patch for version 7. But now apparently it is being included in his latest CyanogenMod.
Regardless, it appears you need root access "

the adapter has a USB plug that you use to hook up to a charger, and will charge your phone. Newer TVs are coming that will support charging over HDMI via the MHL adapter, there may be some out but I think will be a standard in 2012 TVs.

HDMI-cable and joypad for LG G2

I wonder if someone thought to connect their G2 to TV or monitor using microUSB-HDMI adaptor? I couldn't find anything designed specially for G2 (only G2x). I tried with my old SGS3 microUSB-HDMI adaptor and it didn't work. I know some of you guys can send a link for compatible/tested model.
Another concern about PS3 bluetooth joypad as a control for some games on G2. Any chance this combination cam work? I saw only posts about SGS3 and SGN2 combined with these joysticks.

i bought a slimport cable that i was told would work. it didn't. i was also told mhl wouldn't work. i'm using something i bought in korea called "my dp to hdmi"
and it works. here is a link in korean http://item2.gmarket.co.kr/English/detailview/item.aspx?goodscode=426573926
Lg G2 uses slimport
And yes u can use a ps3 controller om your phone if u are rooted and bye the app sixaxis controller.
OP, you need to use Slimport compatible cable or Miracast receiver (it's more expensive, but wireless). If your TV have DLNA/Miracast feature built-in, you don't need anything more to hook phone up to TV wirelessly
Personally I have ordered this: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/MYDP...-7-2013-E960-Supports-Full-HD/1389515555.html
I've ordered also iPega PG-9025: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/IPEGA-PG-9025-Multimedia-Bluetooth-Controller-Black/1611803835.html
If you will have some questions, I'll answer after end of the month, because package will be delivered in this time

I have very simple 37 inch JVC so it doesn't have fancy things like MHL and Miracast. SGS3 worked perfect 1080p with2$ adaptor microUSB to HDMI + USB (for charging). I'll try slimport, thanks for suggestion.

MHL is the USB connection on your phone. Basically it's usb to Hdmi
But there are two standards MHL and slimport
Think apple Use a third one.
Something like this should work:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Slimport-My...695?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19e77502af
I bought one that looks exactly like this, I don't have the exact link but this is the same thing. You have to plug in the USB to a wall charger or PC USB port, and you need to be on a stock rom because slimport doesn't work with any of the CM or AOSP based roms I tried.
Using this cable, the G2 actually outputs a pretty good video feed at 1080P. The colors look a bit washed out on my PC monitor but the speed is good and games can run at around 40+ FPS (as opposed to 60 FPS when not using slimport and just running on the phone). I also use the Moga Pro controller, it's Bluetooth and has very little input lag, I don't have a PS3 controller.
I just wish CM would fix slimport, it is a huge feature for me.
I just bought recently G2, came from S3, very good phone Im happy with it and its quiet interesting to connect it to TV and gamepad... I think I will try buy one of those EBAY slimports to test it, but Im thinking about cheap chinese ps3 controller, anyone tried it on this phone for gaming? And is it worth to play games like this? Because alot of games uses alot of touches
Hmm, I have a question, what about to connect Xbox controller via USB to phone ? The external power is demanding ?
Wysłane z mojego LG-D802 przy użyciu Tapatalka
So, basically :
* MHL cable => to connect USB port of LG G2 to HDMI of the TV ( only for CM & AOSP based rom )
* SLIMPORT cable => to connect USB port of LG G2 to HDMI of the TV ( only for STOCK based rom )
It's correct ?

Nope. G2 uses Slimport, not MHL. It's a hardware difference (basically, DisplayPort vs HDMI), even if the adapter looks similar.

Anyone try connecting Mate 10 to monitor

Hi. Has anyone tried using a USB C-to-HDMI cable to connect Mate 10 to a monitor. How do you like it? Do apps scale well on monitor? Assuming you hooked up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, have you tried editing a document? Thanks!
still waiting for my Mate 10! But one of the reasons for getting one is USB-C to HDMI. One thing I noted when sourcing a cable - if you use a "standard" cable you won't be able to stream Netflix/Amazon streaming due to lack of "HDCP" compliance. I got a cable that was compliant for a few euro more on Amazon. Just keep this in mind if you want to stream Netflix etc.
Does anyone know if this would work with a Surface Pro 4? The SP4 has a mini display port, so maybe with a mini display port adapter, we can connect Mate 10 to the SP4 and view desktop mode on the tablet. Would that work?

Well the cable I have purchased is the one linked below - which the manufacturer says (elsewhere) is the HDCP compliant one. I can't guarantee you that it will work though!
I am expecting my phone and this cable this week so will try out!

NOTE - this manufacturer also sells usb-c to hdmi cables that it says are NOT compliant. Only one above is one they say is compliant.

Thanks I'll look for it here in Amazon US, no problem returning so might as well try.
I tried it out briefly when I got the phone.
I used a type c to HDMI adapter, with a normal HDMI cable.
Some things I noticed:
I think this drained the battery more than anything else I've done with the phone (including gaming).
The phone was noticeable warm after the session.
My phone rebooted shortly after the desktop session. Like it crashed.
The phone states it's in reverse charge mode, like juice is also bring drained from the phone to the TV.
I couldn't get YouTube to work full screen without borders. Unless I was mirroring the phone screen (which means phone screen also remains on).
I've mixed feelings, it's early days I guess.
Ok, I am still waiting for the cable from Amazon but ended up purchasing an adaptor from Maplin.
Worked fine - as in outputted screen of phone (in phone or 'desktop' mode).
But I did notice that the screen resolution as outputted was far less than the resolution of the screen - I would have expected the 1080p display to mirror across to the TV.
It wasn't that it was bad, just blurry text and not crisp when looking at video. Whereas in the past, with a phone with an actual hdmi connection as opposed to usb-c, or indeed when outputting a media player with hdmi or casting using chromecast, the quality is perfect.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong or perhaps the Maplin cable is not up to speed. Open to ideas.

The phone states it's in reverse charge mode, like juice is also bring drained from the phone to the TV.
I couldn't get YouTube to work full screen without borders. Unless I was mirroring the phone screen (which means phone screen also remains on).
I've mixed feelings, it's early days I guess.

I was wondering about the battery drainage. Some cables I've seen have an additional input for charger. Maybe that might help

Interesting. Sounds like you are using Mate 10 Pro. Wonder if resolution is improved using Mate 10.

No, normal Mate 10.
Other cable arrived and same situation. To clarify, it's fine, and perfectly watchable, just not crystal clear. It strikes me that this method seems like the usb-c to hdmi cable is simply mirroring the display of the phone rather than actually outputting the video file itself independently - as would happen with a HDMI connection as you used to get on some phones. Perhaps this is something to do with the issue.

......hope you post result of amazon cable! have a nice day!
It was amazon cable I referred to above. So same with maplin adaptor and amazon cable. Tried outputting a HD YouTube video but not much different. As I say, fine, but not as clear as would expect if you copied that file to a media player attached to a tv via hdmi
Hooked mine up with the Huawei supercharger and cable and it slowly drains the battery in desktop mode. Without charger it will suck down the battery fast. Benched with Antutu and got 175k on phone. In desktop on 30" monitor got 157k. Still faster than my Mate 9. My S8+ in Dex was just about worthless. Also with the M10 in desktop with wired mouse has zero lag. Bluetooth mouse a different story. So gaming is pretty good on a monitor.
Ok, I "solved" my problem by fluke. I would love if someone more techy than me could explain but this is what I did to fix the fact that the HDMI output looked more like 640x480 than a hi def picture.
Went to TV settings, and selected advanced, HDMI settings, and Changed HDMI "Auto" mode to HDMI Graphic mode (choice of Graphic/Video - video was default and was crap). As soon as I did this I had perfect outputted photos and videos.
According to one tv manual I found on a search:
"Graphic: HDMI input timing set to Graphic mode (PC) - The image is full scan.
Video: HDMI input timing set to Video mode. The image is over scan."
According to someone on a completely unrelated PS4 forum:
"Basically by changing the HDMI mode to graphic, the HDMI output (be it gaming console, pc, or cable) bypasses "extra" processing features of the TV that
make the game and TV broadcasts look crappy and also causes lag. By bypassing those features you will get a much clearer picture."
Either way, it's fixed. On my tv. And on a shop tv the same issue. So given that I've connected previous phones with hdmi connections a few years ago without issues, this suggests that it is something to do with how the Mate 10 outputs signals in a way that TV recognises?
Love to hear an explanation from the experts. Thanks.
Edit: someone else with a similar issue on another device - so it seems the issue is that the Mate 10 is not recognised by most Televisions as a "PC" which would correct hdmi mode to "graphics" ?
"When I switch between the Blu-Ray and the PC on two separate HDMI inputs, the TV doesn't detect that's it's connected to a PC, so it doesn't switch from video to graphics mode - which is required for it to look good as a computer monitor.
Since the TV deosn't recognize the PC and auto switch to graphics mode, when I switch from Blu-Ray to PC, I have to dig down into the menu and switch the HDMI mode to graphics manually - and then back when I go to the Blu-Ray. -- Major pain if I'm switching back and forth."
Any ideas? Is this something Huawei could fix in firmware?

It looks like its related to the TV resolution : I have the same issue (640*480 resolution) when I connect the mate 10 pro to a 4K native TV but it works perfect when connected to a full HD TV !! It's a shame as 4K tend to be the standard display, so I guess Huawei should fix it whith a firmware update. Any other solution (HDMI 2.0 cable maybe??) ?

USB-C HDMI Support?

Does devices has USB-C HDMI support like S8, LG G5?
up!
Doesn't seem to work on my first attempt. Reason I was ditching my Moto Z as it didn't work on that. Always worked fine on my LG G5 and on pre USB C Samsungs. At least it does have miracast though Moto didn't even have that.
Tried again after updates, still no joy after system update 47.1.A.8.49
The screen does seem to detect an HDMI input but it's black and the phone doesn't mention it.

XZ1 does NOT support MHL and DisplayPort-over-USB-C HDMI adapters. They won’t work on the device. That means you’ll have to use a wireless method ( e.g Miracast or Chromecast) to connect to your TV
Hi,
A Reddit user has successfully tested one method to display content via HDMI
Thread : https://www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/comments/9futz7/displaying_content_via_hdmi_on_xz_xz1
Anyone have any feedback on this method ?

The missing link is the keyword "DisplayLink"! A "DisplayPort alt mode" USB-C to HDMI cable would be cheaper and smaler, but this DisplayLink dongle does the job, too! :good:
"WAVLINK UG-3501H" (DisplayLink certified dl-3500 chipset) + USB-A to USB-C adapter/cable
After installing the app "DisplayLink Presenter" and a reboot, the picture was shown via HDMI.
I tested the this device with these smartphones:
1. Sony XZ1 (USB 3.1)
2. ZTE Axon 7 Mini (USB 2.0, like the XZ1 Compact)
Hello, and thank you SGH-i200 for this tip, but I'm not sure to understand, why this item you propose is suppose to work better than other USB adaptator ?
I'm needing to be chanrging my Xz1 while plugged to a screen and a Bluetooth keyboard, it seems that this item is not giving option to charge my phone at the same time, how to find any adaptator that is "displaylink" ? I've made hours of research now, and still don't get anything..
Thank you !

Maybe you can try to use a USB type C docking station which supports DisplayLink. eBay and Amazon are full of DisplayLink adapters and docking stations.
In order to use a hub, you need a kernel that allows to active USB host mode and charging at the same time! Only same custom kernels allow this combination.

Thanks,
I buy it from ebay, tested today
WAVLINK UG-3501H + Ugreen type-c to usb + Sony XZ1 + Monitor 1080P = video + audio (I can't check resolution)
But,
For Sony = WAVLINK UG-3501H == 26-39$
For Samsung Galaxy S8 / S8+ Plus / Macbook/huawei mate10 P20 (pro) = USB-C Type-C to HDMI == 6-18$

Trying to replace a Lenovo USB-C HUB C112 that is not recognized by my Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact
Do you know if any DisplayLink mini hubs would be compatible too ?
Does anyone has tested Vantec SB 3.0 Universal Mini Docking Station Adapter with HDMI/DVI (DSH-M100U3) with Xperia XZ1 (Compact)?
Also, I read this : "...It appears that some Android devices do not go into USB host mode..."
Could it be what happen with my Lenovo USB-C HUB C112 ?
Regards

Did you check what is shown in a USB diagnostic app like this one? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=aws.apps.usbDeviceEnumerator

MHL or USB-C video support?

I know this is not a popular feature these days, but I figure I would ask. Does this support any sort of video output via a cable? MHL dongle, USB-C to HDMI dongle, etc.
I would love to hook it up to a TV to play emulator games with no input lag.
Sorry I can not answer your question but I got to say that usb-c video out is criminally underrated. It is such an amazing and hassle free feature. I really hope it catches on. If you ask me its because for some reason its not advertised. I only know about it because I Googled it out of curiosity. 2 days and $15 later I had one of my own.

I would love to have this feature too. Would love to run something like Sentio Desktop or better still MIUI Desktop Mode (once they implement it). I would even buy this phone solely for this purpose.
I have the same question, can we use a cable usb c to hdmi in order to connect poco f1 to a tv.
The snapdragon 845 doas support it so it should work
But it doesn't work on some Sony smartphones with the supported soc
bro to clarify, actually usb type c is 3.0 port, and it does support reverse charging, dex, audio peripherals etc (according to USB corporation). but midrange and budget flagships like poco, oneplus does not provide 3.0 connectivity via those ports. they put a c type look-a-like port but it is micro usb wiring done on board. you can charge using any type c branded cable and transfer data but at 2.0 speed and the features you asked may not work. only limited manufacturers like lg, sony, samsung only provide real type c 3.0 or 3.1 port connectivity.
hope this clarifies something.

Does it work on Poco?
USB C video doesn't work. Already tested. There's already a thread and few users like me tested with such accessories. MHL also doesn't work (not tested by me but some other user) search general section.
I wonder if it can be enabled by software, though. There are much older phones without USB-C that can do it. Shouldn't USB 2 provide enough bandwidth?

As far as I understand it's a hardware issue, as in the hardware doesn't support it. I'm sure the USB type C port is just for charging and file transfer at USB 2.0 speeds
