Mate 20 Pro, PC Mode: resolution and cable? - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello XDA!
I pre-ordered a Mate 20 Pro. I hope to use it as a desktop PC replacement. Using the PC Mode, or Desktop Mode, or "Easy Projection" as they call it.
I'll use a big UHD TV in place of a monitor. And Bluetooth keyboard & mouse.
And it should even be wireless! (using Wi-Fi, and maybe Miracast if TV supports it, not sure)
But do you know what resolution will it support? Will it output UHD/4K @60fps? Wireless and/or wired?
And what cable should I buy? USB-C 3.1 to HDMI 2.0? Can you recommend one from Amazon?
Thanks!

I am unsure about the new wireless solution I know that it uses Miracast if the TV supports it. Else it uses a Huawei adapter (which I suspect only contains a Miracast adapter for the TV) Miracast supports up to 1080p according to Wikipedia https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracast
For wired solution you should check the mate 10 forum there are discussions and recommender cables for that. Also it sucks a lot of battery. There are special dongles that allow easy projection and charging at the same time. Many only allow slow charging speed so the phone still drains battery while charging. There are some special dongles that allow fast charging. Look out for these.

Thanks Alfred!
Good point. Maybe a cable that supports charging like ref. B07F9WDS87 on Amazon ?
Also, maybe a wireless quick charger? There have been rumors of Huawei soon offering a 20W.
And regarding the max resolution using cable, you think Mate 10 users will have an answer? Maybe Mate 20 has been upgraded on this part? (max resolution for Easy Projection output)

I'm not 100% sure about "easy projection" but for samsung dex, I've tried a few cheap cables/adapters and didn't work, finally this one worked okay and it's a reasonable price ($20), I'm almost sure it would work with "easy projection"
Could not add the link but this is the title: "USB C to HDMI Cable([email protected]), uni USB Type-C to HDMI Cable [Thunderbolt 3 Compatible] MacBook Pro 2018/2017/2016, Surface Book 2, Samsung S9/S8, Dell XPS 13/15, Pixelbook More - Gray -6FT/1.8m"
Also bought a Logitech K380 BT keayboard on eBay for around $12

Hi all,
I can confirm Wireless Projection works absolutely fine, but I haven't checked the resolution as yet.
One strange thing however is that I have yet to find a way to use desktop projection via USB cable - perhaps in an OTA

But let me guess.. ur device Ur using either telly or monitor supporting Miracast right?

Thanks @vwite, I ordered the UNI cable. And a Logitech K830 keyboard, with an integrated touchpad/trackpad.
Thanks @Wiggz! Very annoying that you can't find how to connect by cable It's very unlikely that the Mate 20 Pro will be able to output [email protected] over Wi-Fi Miracast while there's hope with the cable link.

Yeah [email protected] does not seem likely wireless. I originally bought the cable for the Note 9 but I'll try to see a difference with the Mate 20 Pro between wired and wireless and if I don't notice any difference at all I might actually return the cable.
Just as comparison, Note 9 has the option of mirroring screen wireless but if I play a video is choppy, while if I use the cable for DeX it seems more fluid. Even if I end up keeping the cable for a fluid experience at home, can't deny that being able to "turn hotel TV into basic PC" when traveling with either just the keyboard or ONLY the phone (using it as touchpad and touch keyboard) seems amazing.

Well it theoretically is possible. If you search the Wi-Fi Alliance website, from the page about Miracast, it says:
Streams HD and 4K Ultra HD movies from a tablet to an HD television
Seems like the device should be certified Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Miracast™. And I don't know if the Kirin 980 SoC is. All I found is it supports Wi-Fi 802.11 ac and the Hi1103 chip is able of a theoretical peak download speed of 1.7 Gbps.

I could not find much either about its GPU, the Mali-G76, besides it supports 2 displays, obviously. The main display on the Mate 20 Pro is 3120×[email protected] So is it able to drive a secondary 3840×[email protected] display via USB-C?

has anyone compared speed wireless vs with cable?

I've received my Mate 20 Pro but could test only wired projection on 1080p screen.
I don't have yet a Miracast enabled TV or receiver, neither a 4K screen.
Btw, desktop mode looks promising I could launch a ton of Chrome tabs and not notice any sign of slowing down.

Are there any noticeable improvements to desktop mode over EMUI 8.0 series from the Mate 10.

Frame rate is barely less on wireless than wired but there is a delay. Is not bad at all though but I find using my laptop thunderbolt dock for the odd shopping spree works well
However it does not support ultra wide resolution. My 2560x1080 monitor shows as 1080p

I just tried it using the Huawei Mate book USBC dock, and can't get it to output 4k to my tv. Only seems to output 1080p..anyone else had any success?

The chinese Huawei online store (Vmall) has a miracast receiver from Hagibis that claims to work in [email protected]
I haven't found any user review that explicitly says it works in 4K tho.
If anyone's interested, the model is Hagibis WFD0535G.

Hello to all who are using the Huawei Mate 20 PRO in desktop mode using EMUI 9. The maximum resolution I can output from the Mate 20 Pro is 720p. Also, the functionality of the apps-O/S available is very limited such as taking screenshots of the desktop, multiple windows of the same app like MS-Word/Excel and comparisons between full PC app functionality to mobile app counterparts. Huawei's desktop mode is Windows 95 all over again but for a docked mobile version of the PC hardware in the 1990s. It's going to take at least a good 5, 7, 10 years before DEX or EMUI desktop mode reaches the level of a PC/laptop level.

EMUI 8 - I was able to get 1080p on my external monitor. With the EMUI 9 OTA update, I can only output 720p on my external monitor from my Huawei Mate 10 Pro. Talk about going backwards!!! I was on chat with Huawei support. They reported it to their internal team. Hopefully, it's something they can fix or patch.

I did not use The original huawei easy projection cable

Nevermind. Wrong post. Moderators please delete.

Nope
It supports 1920x1080 only. It won't do t 2560x1440, 2560x1080, or 3840x2160. It won't do 1920x1200, either... I tried them all.
Dex does 3440x1440 and 2560x1440. It won't do 4k. It also won't do 3840x1600, the nice new ultrawide resolution.

I've tried Samsung's Galaxy S8 usb-c to HDMI adapter and no dice
Read that Samsung ended MHL support on their devices since S6. However, the new S8 introduced support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode, which allows direct connectivity to projectors and TVs. Hopefully the same applies to Tab S3, anybody can ascertain?

My Samsung Tab A 10.1 SM-T580 doesn't support MHL via HDMI adapter. However, I'm able to use Quick Connect to connect to a HDMI wireless adapter.
For Smart TV, you don't need adapter, just use Quick Connect to stream the display to your TV.

What kind of a crazy Backwards step is this? A pretty expensive flagship device that cannot even output to HDMI by cable.
I'd be pretty sure the device could easily support it, it just needed to be implemented for crying out loud.
What is it with Samsung and removing features for no good reason? :silly:
Good job Google have more sense, thank God for Chromecast.

Just got this device , tried connecting to my second gen chromecast and boy i was shocked that even after a factory reset quick connect was unable to find the device. So i got the google home app and connected tab s3 to my chromecast. I was dissapointed that my hp monitor cannot change the 4:3 cast video input . So anyone who is buying this tab please be aware of these limitations. Hopefully samsung can provide us software update to use usbc to hdmi.
Lack of HDMI support is my biggest issue with it. I would use it for work presentations if there was some way of connecting to hdmi or vga, really surprised it doesn't do the former somehow. Fine as a home device but not great for work. Shame as apart from that it's excellent.

Actually Samsung eliminate wire connection ( wired HDL ) in recent models, but you can use Quick Connect to Screen Mirror to a TV.
I have no problem to screen mirror two different Tab As, SM-T550 and SM-T580 to a TV via wireless HDMI adapter.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00050649/
Smart TVs already have Screen Mirror, so there is no need adapter when using Quick Connect.

Quick connect will not be as fast as a direct cable , a HDMI support would have been wonderful in all sense. This is a loss in the end.

It's not about speed for me, it's the fact i go and see a lot of customers and they have projectors with VGA or HDMI - no chance of a wireless connection.

I've done that before at home and yes it works fine, but do you need to connect the Chromecast to a wireless network, or can you use it via a direct connection? I often don't have wifi access on client sites.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't have the luxury of time at the start of a presentation. It's so much quicker to just plug in a cable, so I'll continue to carry a laptop.

But surely if the chromecast is already setup, I. E. configured with Wifi name and password already for the hotspot, all that is required is plug the chromecast in and turn on hotspot? No other setup required.
It's only a one time setup. It's what I do.
I'd say it would be quicker than connecting a cable as it literally takes seconds for a chromecast to connect.
I want the same: output my tablet screen on a hdmi output.
My research results in 2 options: first the already mentioned chromecast (which must have an internet connection to use) and second a Miracast adapter.
Miracast doesn't need an Internet connection as it spans its own wifi direct connection between the miracast adapter and the tablet.
Does anyone have experiences with a miracast stick like this?

If this would work it will be a good option for me.
Miracast, WiDi, and Microsoft's Wireless Display Adaptor
Hey! So I came across this post as I myself was considering buying a Tab S3 to replace my Tab S2, and I also have the exact same needs you describe. I have been using Miracast to avoid using long cables for presentations etc. and the best alternative to an HDMI/MHL cable adaptor (apparently not supported on the Tab S3) is the "Microsoft Wireless Display Adaptor", there are two versions of this, the "V1" and the "V2", I have used both and they are both great, the only major difference is that the newer "V2" version is half a second faster on input lag/delay but in both of these it is under a second so perfect for streaming up to 1080p videos with audio, presentations, etc. (maybe not for gaming but I don't game). The only issue is that when you cast a screen you cannot change the aspect ratio at all, but that is an Android issue and not Samsung's as it happens with all devices, given the Tab S2 and S3 are 4:3 screen ration they will always cast in that ratio which will look slightly odd on 16:9 TV's and projectors. However, for video casting there is a way around this, if once you are casting the screen (you'll see it as 4:3) and you decide to play a 16:9 video on the tab using either the built in Samsung Video Player or VLC it will suddenly turn your tablets screen black and cast the video in true 16:9 aspect ratio only on the Screen you are mirroring to (whether it is the Microsoft adaptor or an integrated Miracast one on the TV), it will still pop up the video controls on your tablet's black screen when you touch it but not the video, for me this is a near perfect solution, I'd rather the Android operating system would adapt the screen ratio with Miracast but I can understand why it is difficult to do as on one of the screens it would have to look distorted, when I do need the 16:9 aspect ratio I use my phone (Galaxy S7). The bonus of the Microsoft Display Adaptor is that it will also support WiDi which is Intel's Wireless Display technology very similar if not the same as Miracast but for Windows based laptops with Intel Hardware, both an Intel processor and an Intel WiFi Card. This works in Windows 7 if you download the software from Intel and is already integrated into Windows 10 on the tools on the right hand corner when you click on "connect" it will already show you the Microsoft Adaptor as a screen to connect to, the advantage on windows is that you can actually extend the wireless display to be a second monitor and drag what you need to the second screen whilst having other things happening on your laptop's screen. I know it is a long explanation, but I have been chasing this technology for the last 3 or 4 years as a way to get rid of cables and it works quite well by simply purchasing this little adaptor for my laptop, tablet, and phone, as long as all of these support either Intel's Wireless Display or Miracast.
Hope this helps

Haha, man this thread has gone way off-topic - yes there are many wireless display solutions but it appears the tab s3 is hobbled from providing video out over usb-c from our testing.
We've tried 4 different USB-C docks/adapters/etc in our lab to get wired hdmi (1080p monitors) and none of them have worked. Our Galaxy S8/+, however, outputs 1080p with these same adapters just fine

Anyone try connecting Mate 10 to monitor

Hi. Has anyone tried using a USB C-to-HDMI cable to connect Mate 10 to a monitor. How do you like it? Do apps scale well on monitor? Assuming you hooked up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, have you tried editing a document? Thanks!
still waiting for my Mate 10! But one of the reasons for getting one is USB-C to HDMI. One thing I noted when sourcing a cable - if you use a "standard" cable you won't be able to stream Netflix/Amazon streaming due to lack of "HDCP" compliance. I got a cable that was compliant for a few euro more on Amazon. Just keep this in mind if you want to stream Netflix etc.
Does anyone know if this would work with a Surface Pro 4? The SP4 has a mini display port, so maybe with a mini display port adapter, we can connect Mate 10 to the SP4 and view desktop mode on the tablet. Would that work?

still waiting for my Mate 10!

Well the cable I have purchased is the one linked below - which the manufacturer says (elsewhere) is the HDCP compliant one. I can't guarantee you that it will work though!
I am expecting my phone and this cable this week so will try out!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XS7T4GP
NOTE - this manufacturer also sells usb-c to hdmi cables that it says are NOT compliant. Only one above is one they say is compliant.

Thanks I'll look for it here in Amazon US, no problem returning so might as well try.
I tried it out briefly when I got the phone.
I used a type c to HDMI adapter, with a normal HDMI cable.
Some things I noticed:
I think this drained the battery more than anything else I've done with the phone (including gaming).
The phone was noticeable warm after the session.
My phone rebooted shortly after the desktop session. Like it crashed.
The phone states it's in reverse charge mode, like juice is also bring drained from the phone to the TV.
I couldn't get YouTube to work full screen without borders. Unless I was mirroring the phone screen (which means phone screen also remains on).
I've mixed feelings, it's early days I guess.
Ok, I am still waiting for the cable from Amazon but ended up purchasing an adaptor from Maplin.
Worked fine - as in outputted screen of phone (in phone or 'desktop' mode).
But I did notice that the screen resolution as outputted was far less than the resolution of the screen - I would have expected the 1080p display to mirror across to the TV.
It wasn't that it was bad, just blurry text and not crisp when looking at video. Whereas in the past, with a phone with an actual hdmi connection as opposed to usb-c, or indeed when outputting a media player with hdmi or casting using chromecast, the quality is perfect.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong or perhaps the Maplin cable is not up to speed. Open to ideas.

Interesting. Sounds like you are using Mate 10 Pro. Wonder if resolution is improved using Mate 10.

I was wondering about the battery drainage. Some cables I've seen have an additional input for charger. Maybe that might help

No, normal Mate 10.
Other cable arrived and same situation. To clarify, it's fine, and perfectly watchable, just not crystal clear. It strikes me that this method seems like the usb-c to hdmi cable is simply mirroring the display of the phone rather than actually outputting the video file itself independently - as would happen with a HDMI connection as you used to get on some phones. Perhaps this is something to do with the issue.

......hope you post result of amazon cable! have a nice day!
It was amazon cable I referred to above. So same with maplin adaptor and amazon cable. Tried outputting a HD YouTube video but not much different. As I say, fine, but not as clear as would expect if you copied that file to a media player attached to a tv via hdmi
Hooked mine up with the Huawei supercharger and cable and it slowly drains the battery in desktop mode. Without charger it will suck down the battery fast. Benched with Antutu and got 175k on phone. In desktop on 30" monitor got 157k. Still faster than my Mate 9. My S8+ in Dex was just about worthless. Also with the M10 in desktop with wired mouse has zero lag. Bluetooth mouse a different story. So gaming is pretty good on a monitor.
Ok, I "solved" my problem by fluke. I would love if someone more techy than me could explain but this is what I did to fix the fact that the HDMI output looked more like 640x480 than a hi def picture.
Went to TV settings, and selected advanced, HDMI settings, and Changed HDMI "Auto" mode to HDMI Graphic mode (choice of Graphic/Video - video was default and was crap). As soon as I did this I had perfect outputted photos and videos.
According to one tv manual I found on a search:
"Graphic: HDMI input timing set to Graphic mode (PC) - The image is full scan.
Video: HDMI input timing set to Video mode. The image is over scan."
According to someone on a completely unrelated PS4 forum:
"Basically by changing the HDMI mode to graphic, the HDMI output (be it gaming console, pc, or cable) bypasses "extra" processing features of the TV that
make the game and TV broadcasts look crappy and also causes lag. By bypassing those features you will get a much clearer picture."
Either way, it's fixed. On my tv. And on a shop tv the same issue. So given that I've connected previous phones with hdmi connections a few years ago without issues, this suggests that it is something to do with how the Mate 10 outputs signals in a way that TV recognises?
Love to hear an explanation from the experts. Thanks.
Edit: someone else with a similar issue on another device - so it seems the issue is that the Mate 10 is not recognised by most Televisions as a "PC" which would correct hdmi mode to "graphics" ?
"When I switch between the Blu-Ray and the PC on two separate HDMI inputs, the TV doesn't detect that's it's connected to a PC, so it doesn't switch from video to graphics mode - which is required for it to look good as a computer monitor.
Since the TV deosn't recognize the PC and auto switch to graphics mode, when I switch from Blu-Ray to PC, I have to dig down into the menu and switch the HDMI mode to graphics manually - and then back when I go to the Blu-Ray. -- Major pain if I'm switching back and forth."
Any ideas? Is this something Huawei could fix in firmware?

It looks like its related to the TV resolution : I have the same issue (640*480 resolution) when I connect the mate 10 pro to a 4K native TV but it works perfect when connected to a full HD TV !! It's a shame as 4K tend to be the standard display, so I guess Huawei should fix it whith a firmware update. Any other solution (HDMI 2.0 cable maybe??) ?

Mate 10, PC Mode: resolution and cable?

Hello Mate 10 users,
I've been suggested to ask you a question I have for the Mate 20 Pro, which may behave similarly with Easy Projection (PC Mode, or Desktop Mode).
Do you know what resolution the Mate 10 supports for Easy Projection output? Can it output UHD/4K @60fps?
And what cable should I buy? USB-C 3.1 to HDMI 2.0? Can you recommend one from Amazon?
Thanks!

I have hootoo cable and it works perfectly.
Thank you @sonydesouza!
Do you know what maximum resolution and refresh rate the Mate 10 supports for Easy Projection output? Can it output UHD/4K @60fps?
With Emui9 Beta I can now use easy projection without cable. My TV Panasonic TX-L 50 EXW 784 uses Mirtacast/Screenshare and now i have the option to use easyprojection, that was not posible before. :good:
Same here, I got a Sony Android TV and works great the easyshare @4k...
My BLA-L09 Mate 10 Pro with emui 9.
Thank you @impala65, thank you @HackDSL !
Great news!
So a Mate 10 Pro running EMUI 9 beta and connected via USB-C wire to a Sony Android TV or a Panasonic TX-50EXW784 (Firefox OS?) is able to output 4K/[email protected]? You sure it's not upscaling from the device or the TV? It looks like native resolution, not blurry? And it's desktop extension (PC mode), not mirroring, right?

Hdmi out - realme x2 pro

Hi all,
For those who want to use their smartphone through HDMI, I am using a targus adapter, there are many brands but it must be "DisplayLink" certified.
It works great and lag-free in general use but apparently runs at 30FPS in games.
I bought the used ACA40US targus model for 6 dollars on eBay because it was the most compact and cheap I found, but it needs a USB-to-USB-C adapter, I use a usb-c hub that I had from a previous smartphone and so I can charge while use.
In summary, to use the HDMI output on the realme x2 pro, you only need a certified "DisplayLink" adapter, a USB to USB-C adapter and the display link App, and activate the USB OTG option.
Optionally you can also use the App "SecondScreen - better screen mirroring" from the play store, to change the resolution and choose the best setting for your TV.
Some Targus already bring the adapter to USB-C or are directly for use with USB-C, but they were more expensive.
a video of testing.

Cable doubt
Hello,
I bought an Xtorm USB-C to HDMI cable model CX2111 but I wasn't aware it need to be a DisplayLink certified cable. I searched a lot of the cable but cant find any related info if its certified DisplayLink.
I installed the DisplayLink app that you suggest, also the SecondScreen app and no signal, and I have a doubt.. you rooted you Realme X2 Pro?
I'm asking because I dont have signal on my TV or Monitor from Realme X2 Pro with Xtorm CX2111 cable.
Best regards
Nestor

Hi! This could be OT, but can you share your wallpaper?
Sent from my Realme X2 Pro using XDA Labs
I tried this docking station
https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/acc100184/
everything works!
Lan, 3.5mm audio jack, all USB, Display Port, obviously DISPLAYLINK.
This is my experience.
Edit:
I had to buy a USB C male to USB 3.0 female adapter and enable the OTG settings from the smartphone...
Loved your wallpaper, Care for link? ?
hi all, this is my wallpaper, it's from the book A street cat named Bob
may we know what brand of usb-c hub you using ? is it ok to use other brands?
Can you please share the link and extra experience

DEX mode on external 4k monitor cannot change resolution to above FHD?

Hi everyone,
I intended to use my SM-T865 for presentation and conference call with screensharing and it's been great so far. Only one thing that bugs me is that when I share using DEX, I cannot change the resolution to above FHD which causes the participants cannot read the text from my shared screen.
Anyone been experiencing this?
FYI I'm using Belkin hub and hooked to a 4k Samsung TV, so I doubt the source and hub having any issues, cause i used it with my macbook it works well.
Is it DEX does not seem to support this feature although in the resolution dex you can see the other options from FHD to 4k, or is it just me?
Here is an interesting explanation about DeX, from Samsung: https://insights.samsung.com/2020/08/05/the-beginners-guide-to-samsung-dex-5/
From how I understand it, one of the problems could be the adapter/HDMI cable you are using which might not support high resolutions.
Did you try using DeX for PC, as an alternative? It is not working for me (with Note 8, Note 10+ or Tab S6) but who knows?
Unfortunately, I can't test you scenario because my TV is only FHD.
Increasing font size on your tablet does not have any effect on DeX mode?

? indeed I also read around where hub might cause the problem. I tried dex for Mac but didn't work. I'll try another cable then. Best bet already.
I have also tried this dongle from ages ago from my note 9, still not able to move above FHD
If your dongle is from ages ago, probably it won't support higer resolutions then FHD. Try to find a newer one with 4k specs.

I've tried 3rd party DeX cables and thr official Samsung DeX Pad on a couple 4K TV with my Note 10+ and my Tab S6. I've never been able to set DeX above FHD. Very annoying to have a phone, DeX Pad, and TV that all supposedly support 4K, but not be able to use it.

I just tried it with my sm-t865 and its the same here.
Got a 4k monitor with a hdmi 2.0 and hdcp 2.2 port and I used a ugreens hdmi to usb-c cable that also supports hdcp 2.2 and [email protected]
Edit: my samsung s10 also only goes upto fhd.
Also i found this thread. I guess it really depends on your setup. Some luck is involved.

I guess its related to the monitor/tv and if it supports the wqhd resolution. If the 4k tv only has an fhd and 4k setting it probably wont support the wqhd resolution.

That's what i think too, that there are certain resolutions supported only on pc displays and not on tv sets, unfortunately.

I know this is an older thread, but it's coming up in search results. DEX will currently only go to a maximum resolution of 2560x1440, and only if you are using "approved" Samsung DEX hardware or cables. Otherwise it will be limited to 1920x1080.
To override this behavior when using a third-party 4K UHD cable, get the "GoodLock" app from the Samsung Galaxy App Store. Open the app and install the multitasking extension. It contains a DEX section which will allow you to override this limitation, among other useful tweaks.
FYI - wireless DEX is also limited to FHD, unless you are streaming to a Samsung 4K TV over the 5GHz band, then it will go up to 2560x1440.
DEX will never fully utilize 4K UHD 3840x2160 in its current state due to some standards-compliance mumbo-jumbo. I don't understand this, because I can plug the same cable into my laptop and get 4K--it's just a different device. Enabling "Experimental Desktop Mode" through Developer Options on the phone will also output 4K, but launchers don't support it well (yet).
hi all. tell me please - how can I unlock 120 hz mode in Samsung dex? I know that it used to be, then after the update it became 60, but perhaps some information remained in the old kernels. maybe you need a custom kernel...
hello , i've notice something weird as I was giving up trying to get my s10 above WHQH resolution, with good lock
i just tested dex on a s21 plus , installed good lock , and with this phone i can get dex to UHD (4k) with the same hdmi cable + usb c hub i use with my s10 ... so now at least i know it's not about my setup.. but wondering if there is a difference between dex devices , as some could not be able to display 4K ?
