Honor 8x Can't change launcher/ pie controls and vpn not running in background - Honor 8X Questions & Answers

I just got my 8x in the mail today, love it for the most part, but there are a couple things that are really bugging me about it.
I cant seem to change the launcher no matter what I do. I just don't have the option in the default apps. I've tried multiple different launchers. I also use Pie controls and a vpn. They run in the background when I have the app open. but if I close it I can't get it to stay running silently in the background like I was able to do with all my other phones. I've tried hitting the lock icon on the app when I hit the square and the apps come up.
I have tried allowing it to run in the background using the phone manager. I have turned on ignore battery optimization. I have tried adding the apps as trusted apps. I have tried factory reset after factory reset. I am at a loss. Please, let me know if this is an issue that only I am having, or if this is a problem with emui in general. I am tearing my hair out at this point, and I am going to return the damn thing if I can't get this to work.
Android is about customization, and it seems as if they are trying to strip that ability from us. Navigating my phone is a pain in the butt now, and I don't really know what else to do other than return it, unless someone knows something that I don't.
Thanks.

I have been using the Honor 8x for about a week now. The first thing I did was install Nova Launcher, and I had absolutely not problem doing that.
Not only did the screen pop up after the installation to choose my default app, but there is also the option in Default Apps to set it there as well. See screenshot.
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1HPPuTjWvFjTGwB270JkpZczg_2qiFTUu
I also had minor issues with apps closing when put in the background, but I turned off the feature, and don't seem to be having those problems anymore. You can change that in Settings -> Battery -> App Launch
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1BuKGijCvg9KtyT4jo2Al0WaDE7hougL6
One VERY IMPORTANT thing to note is that Honor 8x devices released in different regions have slight differences when it comes to software.
For example, I was watching an Indian review video on youtube, and they were talking about System Navigation, and in his Honor 8x, there was an option to use the iPhone like gestures for navigation. In my Pakistani unit that option isn't there at all.
So do bear this in mind. Have you tried running software update to see if there are any updates/bug fixes for your phone?

I have the Chinese version of the phone, Model number JSN-AL00a I had it imported into the USA. The first thing that I did with the device is factory reset it and use the gms installer And yes, the first thing that I did after that was update the phone. I think the first thing I am going to do when I get home is try downgrading the device or reinstalling the firmware using hiSuite if that's even an option. Do you know if it is possible to install a different region on it?
Also the data is locked to 2G for my provider but I rarely use data, so I really don't care about that. Was hoping maybe I could do a kernal update and unlock some US friendly bands. But I know the bootloader can't be unlocked so that's a pipe dream.
I guess when I get home from work I will try the downgrade, if you have any suggestions as to what I can do in the meantime let me know.
Thanks.

I'm sorry I have no idea how your would go about downgrading the firmware on the honor 8x.
Honestly, the phone has been globally released, and I would return that Chinese unit, and get the global retail version if possible in USA, or at least get an EU market unit.
Also, it might be possible to upgrade the firmware with a global version, but I have no clue how to go about doing that.
it is entirely possible that the Chinese variant is intentionally set to not allow you to change the launcher, although I am just guessing.
EDIT: The version I have, the build number is JSN-L22 8.2.0.101 (C185).

Looks like the global version doesn't support enough bands for me to use it in the USA effectively. Oh well. If I can't get it figured out tonight I am going to send it back. The retailer I bought it off on Ebay already sent me a return shipping label. So we will see what's going on tonight. Worst case I have to go back to my crappy lg v10 until I can find something else. Any suggestions on a different mid-budget phone just in case I have to send this one back?
Thanks

Nokia 7 plus, the Nokia 6.1 Plus with stock android and unlockable bootloader is a good option in the midrange segment.
Mi A2 is decent, but has it's drawbacks like no headphone jack, and a fairly small (3080 mah) battery by today's standards.
The Mi Redmi Note 5 pro and the Mi Redmi Note 6 pro are also good, but come with MIUI which may not appeal to many. You can put your own custom launcher, but some people prefer stock.

So nothing I did worked, and I couldn't change the region. But I did notice that even after a factory reset of the phone that google services stayed on the phone. I know this is a long shot, but is it possible that the gms installer corrupted something? if so, how would I go about uninstalling?

Thank You, I too had this launcher problem ... but now when I make it default, it is forcing me to add a screen password/pin. Not allowing me to install without a pin/password. This is irritating.

My phone is Honor 8X Max. After installing ARE-AL00 8.2.0.134(C00) I can't change luncher. No option to set launcher here: Settings->Apps and notifications->Default apps. Any idea to get this option back or how back to previous firmware?

This is ridiculous. I have the same problem and I am at a total loss. This is complete bull****.... I can set a Dozent of Default Apps. But the launcher option is completely missing... Wtf
Is there a way to bypass the default huawei launcher? on the ARE-AL00 8.2.0.134 (C00) Build?
Okay nvrmind, i found what i was looking for guide-remove-apps-bloat-adb-root tread carefully tho, since removing somne stuff can result in a brick.
Also this prodcedure to get another launcher to be enabled permanently is only needed on a Chinese Rom.... furthermore make sure you have the 3rd party launcher of your choice installed prior to remocing stuff ...
I removed
com.huawei.android.launcher
com.huawei.vdrive
com.huawei.vassistant
that did the trick for me, at least for now ... Nova gets picked up as only Launcher and all is dandy, also vassistant removes the chinese voice helper thing, so you can run google assistant with a long press on the middle menu button ....
For further reference on what to remove check these Links ( pasted from the afforementioned Thread) credit for these links belong to mattrask i just put them here for easier acces

I have installed Apex Launcher and if I remove com.huawei.android.launcher then will always run Apex Launcher when I press the middle navigation button?

Hooray!
I was succeeded changing the launcher!
Although it was very difficult ...
I am sorry that I am not good at English because I am Japanese.
--------------------------------------------
Be sure to install the launcher software, you want to use first.
<I use the Microsoft launcher>
After that,
From PC,
the command
"adb shell pm disable-user com.huawei.android.launcher"
send.
It is safer than uninstallation.
By the way it is necessary to set the "developer mode" and set the USB debug mode etc.
However, a concrete method, that is, how to connect to a PC, how to send an adb command, etc., is omitted here.
The launcher that was originally included remains in the body without being erased so it is safer than uninstallation.
When installing multiple launchers, at this point, you will see a selection screen of which launcher to use.
Please be aware that when you open the default application settings screen, the original launcher is restored. Conversely, it is safe as you can restore it.
I am sending comfortable everyday without witnessing the launcher that was originally included. Of course, the home button will call the desired launcher.

It works, but after restarting phone, again back 'huawei launcher'. Is there way to disable 'huawei launcher' without using PC?
I found bug. If I disable com.huawei.android.launcher, then not work 'ultra power saving mode'.

Hi
I am having the same problem of not being able to change the default launcher. Mine is Chinese version with Google play installed already. It came today.
How to change the default launcher? I shall be thankful.

Hi,
I was not able too: there are so many problems with it, (as I read in other topics), that I have decided to wait.
Actually, I was only able to install on my device the entire Google world.

Launcher Options after update
Hi there, I got the Honor 8xMax and I was able to at first change the launcher, then after a software update, the option to change was gone, NOW after another update, the option is BACK but it says "You will not be able to switch back to a third-party launcer if you swithch to Huawei Home." I havent switched to Huawei Home after the update and the other launcers I have are there but they arent lit up for me to chose and the one that's lit up says Drawer Home. What can I do to choose Microsft Launcher? If I do a factory reset and start over, how can I get Microsoft Launder to be my default?

Exactly that same for me.
I was looking for help on Internet and I did not find it.
Now I have a shortcut to the Apex Launcher at the bottom of the main screen. When I press the center navigation button, then I immediately click on the shortcut. I double click to make Apex Launcher appear.

Super N00b with some basic questions GAAHH! :)

Hello,
I was told this is the place to come for everything related Galaxy S III from several people. Please excuse me if this is the wrong place or section.
I'm completely new to the Galaxy 3 and Android in general.
I'm on sprint and I've had the Palm Pre since launch, I just got my GS3 yesterday (amazon $149 no tax, free 2 day shipping) :victory:
As you can imagine coming form the Pre, my mind is blown. It's a bit overwhelming, I'm a pretty tech-savvy dude (pre was hacked to its limits) so I down to tinker. But before I even get started with that I have some basic questions.
1. Is there a way to only use a password unlock once per phone power-on instead of every time the screen locks?
1a Even better would be able to use a simple pin for screen unlock but still have the SD/Internal encrypted with a long password. Is that possible?
2. When I press back, how do I know if an app has been killed? I keep getting the feeling it still somehow running in the background?
3. Is the application manager like the Windows process manager? How do I know what are essential system apps and what can be stopped?
4. What is the best way to get rid of bloatware?
5. What are the diffrent system updates? PRL, Profile, Samsung Software, Firmware?
6. Why is there "com.sec.sprextension.phoneinfo.D..." under Device administrator? Do I need that? Is that a security hole/risk?
Again, sorry for so many questions, just trying to wrap my head around all of this. If there is a better place to be asking question please let me know.
Look forward to being part of the community! :highfive:
BR
1) not by default, maybe an app could aid there, not sure, but on stock "out of the box" the answer is "no"
1a) nope, if you want to use encryption, it's password all the way
2) Settings -> Application Manager -> "Running" tab
3) Kind of. It also warns you when you try to kill off a system app, but you can't really damage anything by doing that. I tend to kill just everything I don't want at the moment (which is usually everything but the widgets and app I am intentionally running) and all is well.
Stuff that REALLY needs to run, restarts automatically anyways (and some that don't have to, do as well....)
4) Settings -> Application Manager -> All -> Tap on app -> "Disable"
5) You will find an uncountable number of ROMs / Firmwares here. Stock as well as custom. What the best one is, is personal preference.
6) might be something added by the carrier. try to disable it, see what happens
7) ( ) .... ( ) whoops, no 7 xD
Hope that helped a bit

That would make password unlock more or less redundant. Anyone could still access the phone.

You're correct. Well, partially. It's still "alive" in terms of being in the memory. But it doesn't use CPU anymore which is all that counts.
However you don't want to kill it. Cached processes take up no space (the RAM is emptyed whenever the capacity is needed), no resources and allow you to multi-task right back to where you left off.
Is the application manager like the Windows process manager? How do I know what are essential system apps and what can be stopped?

You don't want to stop anything. Refer to the prior question for this. Well... you may want to kick off some bloatware but to get rid of thm the phone needs to be rooted. There are threads listing which apps you can safely remove.
What is the best way to get rid of bloatware?

As said, you need to be rooted. Use TItanium Backup to freeze the bloatware. It's still physically "there" on the disk (doesn't take up much space) and you can defrost it whenever needed but as long as it's frozen it cannot be started.

App updates are always delivered through their corresponding market. Usually the Google Play Store, but as for Samsung apps they have their own update mechanism.
Firmware and ROM are updated either OTA or through Kies on the computer. They can also be manually flashed through Odin.

Sounds like some carrier bloatware and from the name of it is supposed to open some file extension called '.spr' for the phone.

Looking for Motorola Update Service components to disable to prevent OTA or OTA msg

Currently:
Android version 6.0.1
Model: XT1650-02
Build Number MCLS24.246-36-3
I'm one of many people experiencing issues with the Moto Z (Force) move to Nougat. In doing so, I have choppy audio, tinny sound, popping and crackling as well. When contacting Verizon, they claim that nobody else is complaining about this to a point where their company is notifying its CS reps with a resolution. When contacting Lenovo/Motorola, they claim that they've received a ton of complaints since the Nougat release, and suggested that I bring the phone back for a swap since I had only just purchased it. I did just that, and followed their additional instruction for not updating to Nougat. The only problem is that the freakin thing downloads automatically while on wifi within a day and no way to prevent it that I know of. Now I have this aggressive attempt of the OTA management to get me to start the process. I don't want to, but neither do I want to manage having to ignore this update every day, nor do I want to accidentally initiate the process. I'm looking for a bit of help.
I thought that if I disabled the Motorola OTA service that it wouldn't push. But it did push even though I stopped the service under developer options. And even now that it pushed, I hoped not to get the message, but there it is. And since I don't want to root yet, I can't clear the space in cache where the update is to prevent it from updating accidentally. I'm looking for the names of any other Moto services that might be related to the OTA that I can disable to prevent this from happening. I don't mind factory defaulting my phone and starting over to clear their cache, but once the update actually executes, I'm hosed with crappy audio again. My wife has the same phone and we have one day to get her a new one for free within our return period. We like the phone, do not want to get a different brand, and hope that we can find a solution to this. Again, I want to do this without rooting.
Thanks in advance if anyone can help.

Hi,
I myself greenified the app called "Motorola-Updateservices", package name is com.motorola.ccc.ota, apk name is 3c_ota.apk
Since then I never had another notification that nougat is available and I didn't search for updates either of course.

About to download and try it out. If it works, I'll be back in a couple days to report. If it doesn't, I'll be back sooner. Thank you for the suggestion.
Also, if you can provide any specific configurations to manage the OTA, I'm at your disposal.
SuD
PS I won't be searching for updates either, but I will be bugging Lenovo/Motorola to find out when the bug is fixed.
I'm rooted, have xposed and the donation version of the app.
As the OTA app is a system app you can't greenify it without having xposed installed and the donation package of Greenify.
Try to just disable the app with the normal app manager.

It worked on 6.01 but no longer on 7.0. If you debloat on 6.01 and take the OTA to 7.0 everything you've debloated stays that way unless you do a factory reset.
for some reason google took away the ability to use the adb commands in 7.0
Almost like they want us to be stuck with bloat lol.

I just tried it and I get some permission error. So it seems after the Dec patch it no longer works on '6.
I have Moto Z Play -1.
any suggestions for someone who might have accidentally downloaded the system update, but hasn't installed it yet? It makes me nervous, having that "new system software is downloaded and ready to install" message b/c I know one day I'll probably accidentally click on it and there won't be a way to go back.
I am a Z play owner.
By installing Z (not play) apps I believe I have disabled the OTA. But I have no nagging update to test it's functionality on.
To my point, if this does work then the reverse should work also.
I will up my apps if anyone want to try it.

Evidence it will work. https://www.darklaunch.com/2015/04/10/disable-motorolaota

USB Debugging set

Etc.
Seems a common error with some folks. As for me, this does not work on this phone at this time. Thank you for the nudge to look at this utility, as I have high hopes that its exactly what I need. I have posted in their forum, and have offered to test prototypes.
Thanks again.

SD variant Themes store not working

Hello
My RN4 is unrooted (for the time being) because the bootloader unlocking process is complete rubbish.
And I seem to get a white screen when ever I run the Themes app (screenshot attached).
When I tap the icon on the top left I get taken to the page where I can view my themes but I can't access the store.
I've tried all of the obvious stuff like uninstalling the app updates or clearing cache or installing the Themes APK, none of these worked.
I have the Stable ROM V8.5.4.0 Nougat, but this issue was also on the previous version (V8.5.2.0).
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
EDIT:
It seems there is something wrong with the app, the reason I say that is because when I first opened the app (back when I got the phone) I got this white screen.
And in the settings, it gives the option of showing terms of use on launch.
But I've never seen that.
I turned that setting on, but each time I reboot the phone it simply reverts back to off.
A friend has a Mi5S Plus, I saw the same issue in his phone.
Quite odd.

V30 update to pie, lost all homescreen configs and no black navigation bar

Hi,
this update (V30 to pie, recieved today) just destroyed all of my home screen configurations (folders, arrangements, widgets, links to websites) -> really annoying.
Also my navigation bar cannot be set to black anymore -> any help?
system seems very laggy, hope that sorts after all app updates are through.
this is not a nice expierence.

From what I noticed, the navigation bar can be set black with a black theme, however, it still becomes white in certain apps (eg. Chrome).
I didn't see a way to make it black universally.

After a big update like from Oreo to Pie is always very advisable to factory reset the phone. You'll be surprised.

surprised of how awfull it is to restore an android phone?
there are so many apps (like home banking) that are linked to the phone and cannot be backed up... I try to avoid that. But I guess it is time to switch to Samsung S10 soon was hoping to wait a little longer till the prices go down.....
but the pie update also seems to drain my battery even faster. what a mess

Well, the battery drain is just another reason to factory reset and it's kinda ironic that you'll have to set your new phone anyway.I told you to factory reset because I solved a lot of problems on my phones through the years after major updates. It's not mandatory but very advisable. At the end it's your phone and your will to do it and set it again.

it is probably what I have to d. but it sure makes it easier to move away from a 15 month old phone.... I just didn't expect LG pushing me away. I was loyal for some time, and I really think this is one of the most beautiful phones of its time; but it sure does not perform well (anymore).
is there any "small" cache reset that will not delete everything?
in case it is interesting for someone:
Last SOT test from a few days ago (before the update) was 4:45 with normal use, mostly indoors, which is not great, but good enough, since I use my phone alot and sometimes charge 2-3 times a day.
will try a regular test with pie in a few days, but I am too busy to have it under similar conditions...

This. It's a new UI and UX, clean install is not difficult thanks to Google backup. I will definitely do a clean install.

a clean install is actually difficult; (as well as to switching to other brand phones)
- my messaging apps loose all there messages (some have manual backup)
- banking apps loose there unique keys -> need to be reauthorized with the bank
- two factor auth apps need to carefully be restored
...
of course if you have a few plain games that are cloud synced, this does not matter; but if you actually use the phone it is not so easy to restore all data; (especially ensuring that nothing of importance gets lost)
I will go as far as wipe cache partition i/o factory reset. Every phone has it flaws at some point.
sure.
its just bad that there is not a streamlined backup method; LGs "mobile switch" is a mess, and gets stuck regularly on messaging apps with many files(?)
best results with preinstalled apps was actually with Huawei/honor; they seem to work quite well (but I don't like there aggressive power management)
I don't like to reset a phone before I have everything setup in a different phone (2 factor etc...) because I would hate to loose data and money.
so now I either get a cheap crap phone; or another LGV30 (cheap as hell at the moment, but getting old), or a new samsung, which I didn't plan on before autumn and new phones released....

I had the same struggles you have.
Ultimately I had to give up and switch back to Android Messenger. It backs up all messages. For 2-factor authentication I use Authy so it can restore my codes from the cloud. But you are correct, I use Android on my Chromebook and setup a 2nd two factor method (email) in my accounts before I reset my phone. I'm annoyed by games, I had to restart so many already even though Google Play Games promises to save the progress. Hope you find another way.

This is pretty much mandatory on any device. When flashing a new OS zip in TWRP, it's always a clean install. 7-8 and 8-9.
Even if not rooted and take an OTA, you either have to let the update settle or just factory reset. I've seen MANY people throughout the years on XDA complain about the newest OS version.
The general reply will always be factory reset.

I noticed that the PIE update fixed issues with the camera; that pictures would not get saved, when closing the app (too fast) after taking a picture.

And we told you to stop doing that. The fix for that was to leave the camera open in the background, until the camera finished its process.

You are misinformed because pretend this is a new phone you are setting up.
How would you go about that? You would use the same two factor authentication on the new phone. You can't say two factor authentication wouldn't work on new phone or nobody could ever get a new phone...
Plus, there are SMS Backup and restore apps. WhatsApp has cloud backup if you turn it on Many messaging apps like Hangouts sync across different devices.
If you're rooted, there's TWRP and Titanium Backup -- where you can restore data to ALL apps.

1) I use Nova launcher and periodically export configuration backups to Gmail or Google Drive. You can also store them on your device, like microSD card. At any point in time, on this phone or another, then you can download and restore those home screens/desktops. I have 5 screens with apps arranged by most use (home screen), spreading out then by categories.
2) A little too late now, but Google also makes backups of your home screen configuration and when you Factory Reset your phone or buy a new phone, and you first sign in, Google will ask if you wish to restore that most recent configuration remembered from your most recent device. However, by this point in time, Google has now backed up the "new" Pie configuration you do not want. This is why you should have factory reset at the very beginning.

Question Am I the only one?

Who bought this phone I mean? It looks like no one seems to care about this phone. Its all over youtube but, everyone seems to be doing the same thing, unboxing it. I was hoping I could get some attention to this phone so I can talk to others. Anyone plan on purchasing this phone? If so, tell me why, if not I also wanna know about that to.
Guess it is still early stage release for this phone, not many ppl got it. Youtube reviewer could get early shipped unit usually.
I got the phone but my mobile data doesn't work with telus and I can't change the apn. I need help. The only Sim I've been able to get work for Data is freedom mobile. I have reception just no data.
I bought an asus rog 5, red magic 6 and the lenovo legion 2 to compare them all since none of the reviewers ever talk about what I am interested in. No reviews I have seen have mentioned that the always on display is broken, or at least it is for me. You can turn it on, but it will only stay on for a few seconds and then it will turn itself off. Which reminds me, they also don't mention that the always on display on the red magic 6 doesnt show notifications. The only phone that has an always on display that works right is the rog 5. Also no matter what I do with the legion 2 it does not work reliably with notifications for anything other than sms. Sometimes notifications work, sometimes they don't. I've tested the legion 2 with tmobile and straight talk in the usa and 5g works with tmobile, so that is something that may be useful to know.

Wow, you bought all 3, thats awesome. The 3 you mentioned were the ones I was thinking about too, those and the ZTE Axon 30 Pro, because origianlly it was thought to have an under display camera and a 6.92" screen. Really, when it comes down to it, as long as its a flagship phone, whichever one has the bigger screen, thats who ill go with, hence why I bought the Legion Duel 2. I did really want the Rog 5 though but, I went with screen size. I havent had any issues with notifications though, at least none that ive noticed, im still getting used to this phone.

Do you have the chinese rom or the global one? Mine is chinese. Of the three phones I wanted the red magic 6 to be the best because it feels the best when I hold it, but the battery life is terrible, the screen is dim and the software overall is not anywhere near the same league as the rog which easily has the best options and features. I am keeping the legion 2 though because I think it has potential with a few updates and it does have the biggest screen. Scrolling also is smoother even though the red magic 6 and rog 5 have all the same specs and either the same or better refresh rates. I use Firefox as a test to see how smooth a phone is when it comes to slowly scrolling. It is terrible on most phones for some reason, so if a phone scrolls smooth in Firefox then it is easily noticeable.

Ive got the Chinese rom but, I gotta be honest, im on the edge of switching back to my 12 Pro Max. I love the customization of android, and unless I start removing apps via ADB I dont think im going to keep the phone. I mean, iPhone has little to no customization but you expect that. When it comes to android, I expect to be able to make my phone the way I want and because of the way Lenovo has the rom set up, I cant seem to do much of anything. I cant fully run Nova Launcher, use Google contacts or Google phone. Lenovo locks everything down so much that it takes all the fun out of it. How do you feel about Legion UI?
I was able to install contacts and google phone with no problem once I installed the play store. Actually I wasn't able to receive calls until I installed google phone. I'm used to these kind of problems with using purely Chinese phones though so its just something I work around I suppose. I've read that the global rom can be flashed on this phone which would fix all of the google issues, but no one has actually tried it that I know of: https://www.getdroidtips.com/lenovo-legion-2-pro-firmware-flash-file/
If you want a proper phone though the Rog 5 with the global rom is the way to go. Everything just works and it is incredibly customizable.

That would be a thought, instead of just returning the phone. My only issue with that is it takes longer to get updates with the global rom. Do you have global running on your phone or are you using stock?
Also have a CN (legion 2 pro) 16/512, nice phone but killing issue is:
1) 4G, 5G (voice, volte) not working for incoming calls (the subscriber is not serviced IVR message for caller). Work only outgoing calls.
TELE2 Russia, using slow 3G for calls and data.
2) Google Pay always disappear from default payment method in Tap&Pay option.
Would like to try change CN to Global ROM but still no instruction and support of lenovo ignoring me (usual for lenovo, crap support).
I haven't installed the global rom, if you end up installing it let me know how it goes. There is so little information about this phone that I don't know if it is better or worse. It would at least have all the Google stuff though.

I just installed the usual google stuff from the apkpure website. I install things in a certain order though, not sure if it makes a difference but I do google account manager, contacts, calendar then playstore. I use the playstore to install gmail, the google phone and google messages. I don't open anything until the playstore and then I just sign into the playstore and it seems to log everything else in that I use afterwards.

I don't sign into anything until installing the play store, when you open it you can't go any further without entering your information. I also manually gave permissions to everything in the phone settings and whitelisted things in the lenovo security app afterwards because this phone loves to deny permissions and kill apps in the background. I don't know if you've looked into the built in security app, but you have to set it up or it will kill apps automatically. It also can't be removed with ADB or you lose the ability to change permissions entirely. The stock launcher can't be removed either or you lose gestures.
