The two bottom holes... - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi everybody,
this morning I've been quite dumb: trying to insert the sim into the newly arrived mate 20 pro, I inserted the pin into the left bottom hole instead of into the correct one on the sim slide...
Does anybody know what are those two holes? Microphones? May I have broke something? For example the waterproof integrity?
I installed a testing app and tried to register covering alternatively the two holes and it seems that the phone correctly register my voice...
Please help!
Regards,
Enrico

We really need to be careful with this. It's so easily done. Just taken double care myself a few minutes ago.

I read about this on a review.... yes, 2 microphones on the Mate 20 Pro, hole for each, one very close to SIM hole. The reviewer noted hoping there's some protection to the mic as this would happen.

There is a third hole on the top, is that another microphone?
I'm not sure I damaged something: when I phone, on the other side my voice is well received, besides I re-tried to insert (extremely slowly and carefully) the pin inside both the bottom holes and it find something hard at the same depth, so it seems that nothing has been perforated.... but, I really would like to know where to find technical schematics or tear down videos to see how these two microphones are mounted and which is their function.
If I try to register something with the recorder app and I tap alternatively on the left hole and the right hole, only the second tap is registered... so two are the cases:
1) I destroyed the left microphone, but the right one is sufficient for any application to work correctly
2) Nothing is destroyed, but the left hole is something else or the microphone inside is used for other purposes (noise reduction?)
Does anybody know where to find the phone schematics?
Thank you everybody!

Think all three are for microphones and noise cancelling. In the dialler on speaker you can change it to all direction or bottom part of the phone so I guess it needs 3 to work correctly depending what option you pick.

You may have damaged the mic. That hole near SIM eject tray is a mic....so record your voice or make some phone calls and see if you can test out with someone else on the line and test if theres any discernible differences by conversation.

On fixit I found a tech guy that disassembled the mate 20 pro.
It seems that the microphone cannot be reached from the hole since it sits on top of a little motherboard and is also protected by a gasket the is perpendicular to the hole. So, it seems that the pin only reaches the plastic of the mid frame.

Lucky me - also pushed a needle into the wrong hole. Thanks for sharing this!

I did the same thing too. I didn't realize there are two mics underneath until I found the pin cannot push the sim tray out.!!!!

Open sim flap sensor problem...

Hi all, apologies if this has been asked before, i searched the archive and couldn't find anything...
I have an XDA, and the little sensor thing which detects if the sim flap is open is not working, meaning that it thinks the sim flap is permanently open, so I can't use the thing
Does anyone have a magic answer to save my bacon? Pleeeease?
Thanks!
Do you mean the rubber cover on the side of the xda? I think you will need to open up the xda and short the contacts with a wire or solder joint for a permanent repair. You will need a small flat head screwdriver and a T6 torx driver, it is not too difficult a task as long as you take your time and treat the components with care. If you wish to do a temorary repair you can push something into the cavity beneath the rubber, this will hold down the switch. With the xda face down and the antenna facing left, lift the rubber cover, you will now see on the right hand side of the slot a recess, at the bottom of the recess you should see a small plastic pin which is attached to the mechanical lever/sensor, this needs to be pushed down and held, if that is missing/broken you could still try pushing something in that will hold down the remainder of the pin/lever. You can test the repair by switching on the xda as without it the xda will not switch on. Good luck.
At this point I should point out that because it kept turning off because the contact was faulty I've hacked about at it with a little screwdriver and the little spring lever is a thing of the past. Oops... I should never be allowed near a toolkit.
I guess taking apart and shorting the contact is next..... THanks for the pointers!
Well, just wanted to say a big thanks to cruisin-thru, as I just took my XDA apart and whacked a blob of solder on it, and I'm back in the land of working phones!
Thanks!
FOR A START IM PRETTY SURE MY XDA MANUAL SAID AND I MAKE A ROUGH QUOTE - 'DO NOT PROD ANYTHING AT THE MICROSWITCH OR YOU RISK SERIOUSLY DAMAGING YOUR UNIT - YOUR WARRANTY WILL BE INVALID IF U DO' I'm Pretty Sure IT has this Plastered EVERYWHERE in the Manual On The Box Ditto, Ditto, Give me an Email And I'll Send u Out a T-Shirt With 'Kiss Me Slow I'm Stupid' On it, You Lucky It Worked CHAP!

[Q] Mic problem solved by samsung service center

hi my friends were complaining that my voice was breaking and vv low during calls. took my mobile to samsung service centre. they opened it up and removed a white plastic part from near the mic. possibly this was blocking my voice. now voice is clear and no complaints. pls see attached images of part that was removed. pls tell me what is the use of this part and hope it does not effect any other functions of the phone, kindly refer to both images i have circled the white part removed in red. asked 2 ebay vendors selling this part for replacement they say that the stock of this replacement part also does not have this white covering and below that there is the mic. any thoughts

Not many Samsung hardware engineers on this forum I guess.
come on guys you can do better. waiting for replies. i had the guts to get my galaxy S2 opened to solve this problem
Looks like just what you said, a piece of plastic that is used to insulate it, and/or block dust from entering thru the mic hole.
Ah - that's the temporal distributor. When you speak into your phone it can take a few seconds to convert that to a digital signal, transmit it to the other person and then convert it back to an audible sound. The temporal distributor uses tachyon particles to convert the audio to digital AND send it back in time, so that there's less of a delay. It just means that people will hear you a few seconds after you speak, but no-one will know that unless they're in the same room as you.
Urm... Wow? My SGS2 can send out signals faster than light?
So it uses a Tachyon Digital to Analog convertor (DAC)?
Urm... where is the flux capacitor located, and if I travel at 60mph, does it take me into a tunnel with swirly lights then reappear somewhere else either in the future or past?

No mate - that's at 88mph
Incidentally, travelling faster than light wouldn't make you go back in time. Light is all about perception, not reality.
thanks but since this part has been removed from my phone by the authorized service centre, will it affect my phone in any way. i am really worried now and from where can i get the replacement for only this part. anyways i received the below reply from an ebay vendor selling replacement mics

That plastic piece is not supposed to be there.
There is another microphone on the top of the phone, you can see it in your picture, and it hasn't got the protection.
That protection is only used during production, the microphone is picked up by a machine using vacuum, so it must have a flat surface. The protection must be peeled off before assembly of the phone.
It is a mic grommet, it should be there.
So nobody else got this piece of plastic? Didn't check by myself...but also got this damn bad mic -.-
I had it. Just took it off and the mic is less worse now.

i think samsung service is taking off these parts on phones having the mic problem, anyone else planning a visit to Samsung ASS to get this sorted.

are you sure this plastic piece is not supposed to be there. have you checked your phone. seen a disassembled phone on ifixit it had this plastic on the mic. really confusing. samsung needs to answer how can they leave things inside the phone that interfere with normal performance of the phone

Oops! Sorry, I took a look at the service manual now. I only saw your pic before.
That part is called a grommet, usually made of rubber, it is supposed to absorb vibrations from the case and not transfer them to the microphone. Also helps to route the sound from the hole in the case to the microphone. Yes, it should be there, but it's not going to affect anything else but the sound quality.
Sorry for the misinformation.

Here's the service manual.

Don't worry too much about not having the grommet in place. If your voice can be heard fine by the other party, there's nothing else to worry about.
Except water and dust.

[SOLVED]Mic screwed :'(

People can't hear me well, no matter what i do, flashed different roms (various cm7.2 and oxygen), wipe, etc...
My mic gain is very low and ppl can't hear me well, guess i could open my phone but i can break something :S
Has this happened to someone??
As a last resort i'll do a kdz reset
It's either a kernal problem or hardware. If it's a hardware problem, then the microphone connector is most likely disconnected partially, or broken.
Try an app like Iris or Vlingo and see if it hears you

Optimus V microphone fix how to
This is how I fixed the microphone on Virgin Mobile's Optimus V . Note: this will also work for any other optimus phone.
Problem: My microphone worked, but it was hard to hear me. I would have to cup my palm around the microphone hole and speak loudly for anyone to hear me.
Fix:
You will need to open the phone completely. Take off the black cover on the back of the phone, followed by the SD card, and battery. Now you are ready to begin.
1- Remove the 6 tiny screws (my screws were very difficult to get off, this is how I did it. 1- found the CORRECT size screwdriver, 2- pounded the top of the screwdriver twice, lightly. 3- used a pair of needle nosed pliers around the screwdriver and turned it using that (your other hand should be holding the screw driver in place). This will loosen up those difficult tiny screws.
2- Pry open the phone slowly and carefully.
3- Remove the buttons.
4- Remove the 2 tiny screws at the bottom of the phone.
5- Lift out the mother board from the phone's clear screen. (this doesn't need to fully come out. Just enough to get into the microphone at the bottom of the phone.)
6- The little hole for the microphone is actually a a foam with a tiny hole in it that carries sound to the microphone on the motherboard. You will remove both pieces of foam tubing for the microphone. The first one is simple to get out, just pry it out with the screwdriver. The second one I used a tiny paper clip and inserted it into the microphone hole. Then I used the screwdriver to scrap it out.
7- Once it is out, blow into it removing any dust.
8- Put the phone back together. (2 screws at bottom, buttons, snap backing on, six screws, battery, SD card, battery, and black backing.
YAY! Now it is fixed.
What happened was during the course of time and dropping it a few times, the microphone tubing's alignment got off. So what we did to fix it, removed the tubing completely. In actuality, the person on the other end should actually hear you better than the factory alignment.
Note 1: Since there is no longer tubing, dust can get into the microphone more readily. Please make sure you clean the inside of your phone every so often.
Note 2: I am not responsible for anything you do to your phone. I am simply telling you how I fixed my phone.
Good luck! =]

I have an Optimus V and this very thing happened to me... In my case instead of foam, it was a rubber grommet. I just pulled it out. I tried re-positioning it but it sounded SO much better without it that I left it out. The hole is SO tiny I can't imagine too much dust getting in there, but I am considering perhaps placing a small screen over the hole, inside the case. Interestingly, I don't recall dropping the phone and can't think of any reason why this happened all of a sudden - maybe the adhesive that holds the rubber just shrunk enough to let go? I dunno. Anyway my phone works great again.

Have Lg G5 fingerprint/lock button issues? Here is your FIX!!!

So my niece slapped my lg out of my hand and it fell only about 3 feet to the ground. It had a case on and i though nothing of it until the morning after i had NO FINGERPRINT setting in my phone. It completely disappeared to come back about a day latter but it was really sketchy. It progressed to the point where it would literally accept any surface touch as my finger print. It has finally died ( wont accept anything as a fingerprint) so i looked on the web to try and find an answer, but all i got was "RMA your phone". and me getting the phone from a 3rd party brand new didn't help either. Well onto the good stuff.
I pulled the trigger on a 10-15 dollar replacement sensor from ebay. To put it in you literally remove your sim tray, battery and bottom half, remove the 2 philips screws, proceed to slide a guitar pick or prying tool along the side to pop the clips just as you would an iphone 5 before all the adhesive, heat up the little metal bracket that houses the sensor as its glued on, pry it off and simply pop the sensor out and pop the new one in. Following instructions again in reverse I was awarded with not only a now functioning fingerprint sensor, but also my lock button doesn't jiggle or move that slight amount!!!!! No nneed for rma and was probably the easiest phone repair I have ever done!

Did you use the same metal bracket and just re-adhere? I'm looking to replace this sensor on a friends phone but every replace fingerprint sensor I find on ifixit, ebay, amazon, etc. doesn't come with the plate or new adhesive.
I just heated it carefully to be sure to reused it. If not just clean it off and apply some 3m double sided tape cut in the shape of the shield. No problems then!

Ordered this, gonna try when it arrives. Fingerprint is in my settings, but I bought off swappa. Doesn't look like phone was dropped but the sensor would only pick up my fp once after setting it up so this is worth a try. Will put results up after I get part and replace.

Speaker stopped working. Ugh

I thank God that our phones can be opened. My speaker stopped working today, so did some homework and watched a few videos on how to take the phone apart. I cleaned the speaker connectors and any other connector pads I could find inside the inner case plate (top and bottom speaker panel) and on the mother board and my speaker came back to life! I thought I would have to buy a new speaker panel. Saved some cash! I cleaned it with alcohol and canned air.
Update.
Speaker stopped working again. Did more investigating and some guys (in the NEXUS phone group) noticed that if you pressed on the back of the phone near/below the camera lens , the the speaker would work again. I tried this and found that if I took off the back cover and pressed directly left of the button area (UP/DOWN VOL-Home button), the speaker would come back on. So I removed the inner back cover and placed six small layers of electrical tape in that area to provide pressure to that area when the inner cover is reattached and screwed in. Well it's going on day two and the speaker works every time. Don't know if this is a great solution but I got my phone working again and avoided buying another 600-700 dollar phone again. Hope this helps somebody.
