VESA DisplayPort Alternate Mode - Asus ROG Phone Questions & Answers

Does anyone know if the ROG phone supports this? I want to use the phone in desktop mode, but $230 for the dock sounds insane when there are alternatives for $40. In other words, do generic dongles work for video output or do we need to buy Asus brand?

Well, it did until I updated the fan firmware.. right now I'm not sure if any HDMI/DP Alternative solution works (including their own) but hopefully they'll fix this soon.. I'm writing an email to asus support about right now.

You can use any of your choice, but just do know they all only do screen mirroring (even the offical Asus ROG ones) so you will be getting a small screen experience just on a larger screen really, so everything will be pretty blown up big style just so you know. The ONLY feature you don't get with unofficial devices is the lack of the keymapper option (that is until someone finds a way to mod/hack/activate that feature hidden from us all), so if you don't care for that then you are good to go with whatever you choose.

Not working
No, it's not working properly. I tried with the Lenovo-USB-C-Dock and two USB-C-Hubs from Aukey.
Asus implemented the DP-Alternate-Mode not correctly, it's not telling the Monitor the Refresh-Rate which leads to weird screen-flickering if ur using an 144Hz-Monitor...
The Keymapping-function keeps hidden and the Phone will not lock into landscape mode. Their own Strix-Fusion-Headset is also not working via USB.
Mathias

I don't think any higher then 90hz refresh rate monitors will work, as I have tried a 90hz free sync (or was it gsync?) Monitor and the sync mode was active too.
Of course the key mapping will stay hidden as their not the official Asus ROG accessory plugged in when having a 3rd party connected with kb+m.
I dunno about your headphones as I don't use the same but I'm using a wireless Sony Pulse 7.1 headset via its wireless signal dongle just fine.
What firmware are you on and which version do you own CN or WW?

So a USB C to display port will work?

Have you got a link to the cable you were using please?

Is there a cheap dongle available?

Update to my original reply; I did get it to work with a cheap USB-C dongle but I had to remove and re-attach the USB-C power first ( and sometimes the HDMI cable )
.. currently my phone is on service however since a couple of weeks.. and it looks like I managed to be the first to break the screen on this phone in Sweden so nobody knows how to repair it =)

Android Tablet as a second monitor?

Hi guys,
I have limited space at my place and I really cannot have another monitor hooked to my laptop 24/7. I need a solution that I can hook up when I need to edit on premiere and that I can remove when I´m not editing. I know there is a way to do this wireslessly with android tablets but it´s super slow and useless for editing. I need to know if there is any way to use an android tablet as a second monitor via USB or HDMI.
I know there is an app for Android called DSLR controller (or something like this) that allows you to mirror Canon EOS camera on your tablet or cell phone using a usb host cable (I´ve tested this on my cell phone and it actually works). For sure there must be a way to do something similar and use a tablet as a second monitor using a usb cable. I´m going to post this on android forum and see what comes up.

I have been looking at the Habey BIS-6332B as a possible low power field computer using Android, and I am trying to find a good solution as to what to use as Monitor's (Has 2 HDMI OUT) that can be recharged easy by Solar and other means in the Boonies.
There is a Chinese outfit called Chinavasion that sells a slew of pretty cheap Android devices, and their Tablets have HDMI ports!
All the Apps I found so far are for Windows and Mac ONLY. None yet for Android-To-Android.
Curious if you found anything?
If not, any idea what area would need to be Hacked? I am not as interested in a wireless connected Monitor as I am just a better low cost TFT Screen; self powered like the Tablets. For a $65-$120 (US) Device, there has got to be a way
In my mind I picture just some Diodes that need to be reversed in the Tablet(s). Air Display in Google Play is the only one so far that looks close Win/Mac only? Any leads are welcome.
Thanks.
I'm actually searching for something like that.
I would love to output my cellphone to an old 10inch tablet.
I've been searching for tablet with video input with no luck.

(Q) wireless keyboard for nst

Hi, is anybody using wireless keyboard on nst? Wired one works fine for me. But when I'm connecting wi-fi mouse, it doesn't seem to work correctly, there is no control over the pointer. I am asking because that could give me bigger choice of keyboards, and maybe also would help to reduce the battery drain. Thanks
Mouses are not currently supported correctly.
Movement gets translated into KEYCODE_DPAD KeyEvents.
thank you... So does that mean that wi-fi keyboard should work normally?... Sorry, I just don't have any to check myself. I don't wanna buy before someone will tell that it is possible. thanks
Well, there's wireless, Bluetooth and WiFi, all very different.
You could use a regular wireless keyboard with a USB dongle on the Nook side.
That will work fine as to the Nook it looks exactly like a wired keyboard.
USB mode as it is now uses a lot of current.
You time between charging will drop to once a day.
Bluetooth would have been a good one, if only B&N had spent the extra $0.50 for the WiFi module with Bluetooth.
Bluetooth on a USB dongle would have all the drawbacks of the above wireless keyboard but would also require a driver.
Keyboard over WiFi using a PC or another Android device would work.
You'd just need software on both ends.
Many keyboards that say "WiFi" are simply wireless keyboards that use the ISM spectrum the same as WiFi does.
The easy way to check is if the package includes a USB dongle.
Thanks for very detailed answer. Yes, I was thinking only about keyboard with wi-fi dongle. I've already noticed that unfortunately bluetooth will not work. There is a rather small range of portable USB keyboards that are specially dedicated to android devices. I was looking for one with a stand for comfortable typing anywhere I will be... a train, park bench etc.... Or well, you can find many usb keyboards with stands on ebay for example , but they all looks almost the same just with different logos, cheap, poor quality ones. Market is concentrated on bluetooth keyboards, then a lot of them are quite decent. So I'm just going to find a good usb compact keyboard, and then mount some kind of stand to it myself. Anyway, that is not very important for others, this post might be already to long.
ok, my question is: will it help to reduce battery usage in usb host mode, if I'll use keyboard powered by batteries?
Excuse my English. Thanks

A good question. And I have a related one - won't using a USB dongle and wireless keyboard take a good bit less current than a plain USB keyboard, because the port isn't supplying power to the keyboard itself? I know to expect things like "It takes more battery life from the WiFi than the current" but I'd just like to know exactly.

Sorry to bump this old thread (and hope someone might still read this).
I was wondering about Renate's bluetooth suggestion above. I realise it would still not be ideal, but I've got a pretty good bluetooth keyboard for my other android devices and it would be great if I could try it with my nook as well (in particular I'd also be curious to test NOOK!E's question about power demand).
I'm running pinguy1982's tweaked ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2651053) and have been able to connect a micro-USB keyboard (the cheap ones built-in in some cases) using Renate's USBmode app. Now I was wondering if/how I would be able to use a USB bluetooth dongle to connect my bluetooth keyboard. Using the USB app, it seems to be recognised - it says something about a wireless device under View USB when I connect the bluetooth dongle. Exact output is:
1d6b:0002:01 MUSB HDRC host driver
0a12:0001:01 CSR8510 A10
#1 - e0:01:01 Wireless
#2 - e0:01:01 Wireless

I don't know how to proceed from here though, as there's obviously no menu point for pairing a bluetooth device. I've had a look around for standalone apps for this, but not successful so far (devices that have bluetooth usually have a regular menu for that of course).
Any help about how to proceed would be much appreciated!
PS:
Just found BlueInput, but it just tells me that Bluetooth is not available. I guess that means something else is missing (if this is at all feasible to work).
Oops, sorry, I didn't see this.
The Nook has remnants in the build for Bluetooth support.
That's mostly in permissions and groups.
The WiFi adapter module on the circuit board does not support Bluetooth.
For an extra $0.25 they could have speced the version of the module that supported it.
I guess that it's not a priority for B&N, even the new Nook Glow Plus has the same problem.
Your Bluetooth dongle gets enumerated on the USB host, but there are no drivers to handle it.
This is indicated by the lack of black dots to the right.
A wired keyboard would show you dots.

Thanks for your reply! So I guess there's no hope to get this to work (except for possibly somehow adding drivers, which I'm afraid is probably beyond my capabilities)...

Anyone try connecting Mate 10 to monitor

Hi. Has anyone tried using a USB C-to-HDMI cable to connect Mate 10 to a monitor. How do you like it? Do apps scale well on monitor? Assuming you hooked up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, have you tried editing a document? Thanks!
still waiting for my Mate 10! But one of the reasons for getting one is USB-C to HDMI. One thing I noted when sourcing a cable - if you use a "standard" cable you won't be able to stream Netflix/Amazon streaming due to lack of "HDCP" compliance. I got a cable that was compliant for a few euro more on Amazon. Just keep this in mind if you want to stream Netflix etc.
Does anyone know if this would work with a Surface Pro 4? The SP4 has a mini display port, so maybe with a mini display port adapter, we can connect Mate 10 to the SP4 and view desktop mode on the tablet. Would that work?

Well the cable I have purchased is the one linked below - which the manufacturer says (elsewhere) is the HDCP compliant one. I can't guarantee you that it will work though!
I am expecting my phone and this cable this week so will try out!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06XS7T4GP
NOTE - this manufacturer also sells usb-c to hdmi cables that it says are NOT compliant. Only one above is one they say is compliant.

Thanks I'll look for it here in Amazon US, no problem returning so might as well try.
I tried it out briefly when I got the phone.
I used a type c to HDMI adapter, with a normal HDMI cable.
Some things I noticed:
I think this drained the battery more than anything else I've done with the phone (including gaming).
The phone was noticeable warm after the session.
My phone rebooted shortly after the desktop session. Like it crashed.
The phone states it's in reverse charge mode, like juice is also bring drained from the phone to the TV.
I couldn't get YouTube to work full screen without borders. Unless I was mirroring the phone screen (which means phone screen also remains on).
I've mixed feelings, it's early days I guess.
Ok, I am still waiting for the cable from Amazon but ended up purchasing an adaptor from Maplin.
Worked fine - as in outputted screen of phone (in phone or 'desktop' mode).
But I did notice that the screen resolution as outputted was far less than the resolution of the screen - I would have expected the 1080p display to mirror across to the TV.
It wasn't that it was bad, just blurry text and not crisp when looking at video. Whereas in the past, with a phone with an actual hdmi connection as opposed to usb-c, or indeed when outputting a media player with hdmi or casting using chromecast, the quality is perfect.
Perhaps I'm doing something wrong or perhaps the Maplin cable is not up to speed. Open to ideas.

Interesting. Sounds like you are using Mate 10 Pro. Wonder if resolution is improved using Mate 10.

No, normal Mate 10.
Other cable arrived and same situation. To clarify, it's fine, and perfectly watchable, just not crystal clear. It strikes me that this method seems like the usb-c to hdmi cable is simply mirroring the display of the phone rather than actually outputting the video file itself independently - as would happen with a HDMI connection as you used to get on some phones. Perhaps this is something to do with the issue.

......hope you post result of amazon cable! have a nice day!
It was amazon cable I referred to above. So same with maplin adaptor and amazon cable. Tried outputting a HD YouTube video but not much different. As I say, fine, but not as clear as would expect if you copied that file to a media player attached to a tv via hdmi
Hooked mine up with the Huawei supercharger and cable and it slowly drains the battery in desktop mode. Without charger it will suck down the battery fast. Benched with Antutu and got 175k on phone. In desktop on 30" monitor got 157k. Still faster than my Mate 9. My S8+ in Dex was just about worthless. Also with the M10 in desktop with wired mouse has zero lag. Bluetooth mouse a different story. So gaming is pretty good on a monitor.
Ok, I "solved" my problem by fluke. I would love if someone more techy than me could explain but this is what I did to fix the fact that the HDMI output looked more like 640x480 than a hi def picture.
Went to TV settings, and selected advanced, HDMI settings, and Changed HDMI "Auto" mode to HDMI Graphic mode (choice of Graphic/Video - video was default and was crap). As soon as I did this I had perfect outputted photos and videos.
According to one tv manual I found on a search:
"Graphic: HDMI input timing set to Graphic mode (PC) - The image is full scan.
Video: HDMI input timing set to Video mode. The image is over scan."
According to someone on a completely unrelated PS4 forum:
"Basically by changing the HDMI mode to graphic, the HDMI output (be it gaming console, pc, or cable) bypasses "extra" processing features of the TV that
make the game and TV broadcasts look crappy and also causes lag. By bypassing those features you will get a much clearer picture."
Either way, it's fixed. On my tv. And on a shop tv the same issue. So given that I've connected previous phones with hdmi connections a few years ago without issues, this suggests that it is something to do with how the Mate 10 outputs signals in a way that TV recognises?
Love to hear an explanation from the experts. Thanks.
Edit: someone else with a similar issue on another device - so it seems the issue is that the Mate 10 is not recognised by most Televisions as a "PC" which would correct hdmi mode to "graphics" ?
"When I switch between the Blu-Ray and the PC on two separate HDMI inputs, the TV doesn't detect that's it's connected to a PC, so it doesn't switch from video to graphics mode - which is required for it to look good as a computer monitor.
Since the TV deosn't recognize the PC and auto switch to graphics mode, when I switch from Blu-Ray to PC, I have to dig down into the menu and switch the HDMI mode to graphics manually - and then back when I go to the Blu-Ray. -- Major pain if I'm switching back and forth."
Any ideas? Is this something Huawei could fix in firmware?

It looks like its related to the TV resolution : I have the same issue (640*480 resolution) when I connect the mate 10 pro to a 4K native TV but it works perfect when connected to a full HD TV !! It's a shame as 4K tend to be the standard display, so I guess Huawei should fix it whith a firmware update. Any other solution (HDMI 2.0 cable maybe??) ?

Cheap DeX dock alternative

Hi,
Just wanted to let you guys know about this dock that I picked up from aliexpress.
The build quality is awesome, it is all metal. Feels really solid and it works in the same way the the actual DeX stations do.
I've attached a couple of images of the product and one of my review.
The current cost is USD $13.71 GBP £10.26 and that includes postage from China, mine turned up in a week and a half, really happy with it.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/EAS...893.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.6d9f4c4d3EQZa8
It works in the same way as the original DeX does, you cannot use your screen as a trackpad and must connect a wireless/usb mouse and keyboard. I haven't tried it with a USB hub yet but I imagine it would work as it is powered via your USB-C phone charger. Using my GS9 original charger it allows passthrough fast charging whilst using the dock. You can also use it for standard screen mirroring rather than DeX mode.
With the experimental labs mode enabled (in DeX settings, which appears when connected) to allow you to scale most windows up to full screen. The only one I have found which doesn't go fullscreen is netflix. Things like PUBG mobile (only opened app to see if it works, you would need an app to remap keyboard keys to play a match), Youtube, Terrarium TV etc all work fine. The option for sound output via phone/connected hdmi device works.
If you have any questions or need me to try something out on it for you, please let me know.
There are some more expensive versions with more USB ports and 3.5mm audio out - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/EAS...-9e13-2ca171f3bfbb,scm-url:1007.13339.90158.0 - These are £29.91 (USD $39.98)
Nice. Do you need to remove the phone from the case or is the usb-c connector long enough? Just curious.

I did have to remove it from the case. I am using the Caseology Parallax which isn't overly thick (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Caseology-...-2&keywords=caseology+parallax+galaxy+s9&th=1 / https://www.caseologycases.com/products/galaxy-s9-parallax-case).
I don't see it as too much of an inconvenience, as when you are using the dock it is likely that you won't be leaving your desk/living/wherever for a while.
Thanks, I will keep it in mind. I bought one off Amazon that had a sale that I found on Slickdeals. It's the XF Times one and it was on sale for $8 so I took a gamble on it. It's working well at the moment but if it breaks, I will look at the one you posted. I already saved it to my Favorites.

Ah, that looks similar actually. I've never really looked on Amazon for them. I wasn't really looking to buy this one, I was just browsing Aliexpress and decided to actually order something on there rather than just browsing for ages and deciding against it. I picked up a couple of cases and watch straps too, it's too easy to buy things when they are so cheap!
My cheap DeX dock works fine
Only problem is, it doesn't charge the phone. The dock requires USB power also. Without power, it just mirrors the phone screen. So I just charge the phone in the morning and it would go all day on DeX if I wanted. However, I usually get up and go to meetings and such, so I end up taking the S9 with me. When I get back, I will typically top off the charge again before plugging back into DeX. I have a DeX setup at work with monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and I also have one at home. I just take the little dock with me and keep it in my backpack. They are so cheap, I really should just buy another one to keep one at both places.
If I don't plug in a mouse, I can use the phone as a touchpad. If I do plug in a mouse, the touchpad functionality doesn't work. Which is fine; just an observation.

Hi,
I hadn't even tried it without the wireless keyboard attached as I foolishly assumed it wouldn't work with this dock. I've just tried it and thanks for the tip it works great as a touchpad!
I just carry a spare USB-C lead with me when I need it, it even manages to fast charge.
One thing I will note is that the connection has become a bit hit and miss on this, I don't know whether that is build quality or because the dock USB-C connector has taken a knock when I have been carrying it around. I still think that I can't really complain for what it cost me.
Yeah, I figured the touchpad function wouldn't work because it is not a Samsung dock. But it still does if you don't use any other input devices.
Just to clarify this dock puts the S9 into the actual DEX mode, not some sort of "similar" app?

I got Goodock one, overall it worked pretty good but it does randomly disconnect from time to time (very quickly, it doesn't even leave DeX mode). I am using a HDMI to VGA adapter in my setup, I doubt it is the reason for disconnects but you never know.

Honestly maybe once a week. Hard to break the habit of just firing up a laptop.
Can this work with a non Samsung Android?
Is there/ shouldnt there be a generic/ stock Android alternative for the same?
This is nice but better connect a computer from other room to tv and bring cable through the wall for wireless mouse too there if it's for home.
I recommend this.

Worked 100% with Galaxy S9+ and Galaxytab S6. No matter what I tried wouldn't accept LAN cable signal or Video output at same time? I researched the Dock II a little and seemed like exactly what I needed but same issue and couldn't use my Asus zenscreen mb16ac period to play games. Would reboot game and send message to screen saying Dp ALT mode isn't supported by the device (phone desktop dock II) & go to asus.com to download display driver. Well the Dock II according to asus support site runs on chrome OS and is no drivers or anything available for download that chrome OS automatically updates. Display link app allowed me to to perform basic functions on the zenscreen with Dock II but not start online applications. Asus support people had no answers or solutions for Android OS to fix this problem even though it clearly states on Asus.com that Zenscreen MB16AC is fully compatible with Rog Phone 3 and it is just not with Dock II! I have since returned the Zenscreen MB16AC and Asus professional dock to get my my $400 back! I've had nothing but problems with Asus peripherals with Asus phone? I have cheap type c portable monitor that runs perfectly without the first driver or app and several other type c hubs and docks of various price ranges and features which all work 100% also. I am really disappointed in my experience with Asus as this is first few Asus products I've owned. I'm waiting to hear back from asus support to get solutions to Ethernet port and video output I'm conjunction with each other. As of now I use a Ethernet to USB 3.0 adapter plugged into Dock II and Display port to type c cable to play games with Display with a solid internet connection and have to use Flydigi Apex controller and application to use key mapping features!? Same things (actually more via Ethernet adapter) with my Samsung phone and tablet wtf!? I bought this basically to be a mini console for Android games and emulators as it's advertising to be with it's outrageously priced peripherals! Unfortunately none of it's came to fruition and I needed a new phone period or I would and still thinking about getting rid of this and buy a Galaxy note 20 which have same cpu/gpu and is in my past experiences with other devices Plug and Play with anything and everything! I am even more pissed about Kunai 3 gamepad? This thing is a mystery? I purchased one on Aliexpress 2 months ago and still not" in stock" and just got refunded. Purchased one 2 days ago from reputable seller on eBay that said had 2 of them and be delivered by Sept 16th and was told this morning that be at least another month before it's "in stock" and getting a refund. Asus website has no official release date or have it even listed as item for sale on their website where I bought Dock II and Zenscreen!? I want to be able to use key mapping built into the phone with Armoury crate/ Game genie which is main reason for buying the Rog Phone 3. Asus says it supports key mapping for the Kunai gamepad 1 and 2 but won't actually clip to the Phone as this one slightly bigger ?. If I'm going to spend $150 - $200 I want capability to use it in all configurations. So if anyone has a solution to my problems with Dock II and Ethernet and DP Alt like link to drivers or something PLEASE LMK! And anyone who is considering purchasing the Asus Rog Phone 3 do some research and with caution if you want it to play games with external display and use all it's key mapping with controller and keyboard and mouse features show up but don't use so haven't tested it as actually being functional. Says that a few 3rd party controllers are supported but defeats the purpose for me as the actual games recognizes the controllers and KB&M which ISN'T what I want. So I'm stuck using aggravating Panda keymapper which requires you to run ADB Debugging from a computer which randomly deactivates and has to be done upon every reboot of phone or cheap feeling Mobile controller like my Flydigi Apex with their keymapper app running in background eating up more ram and unreliable BT connection! So again if anyone has a solution and anyone has a answer about Kunai 3 and where to actually purchase now without paying $300 please comment or message me here I will dance at you wedding!

Good evening mate, I'm sorry for your bad experience. I'm using mobile Dock 3 with Rog XG17 external monitor, claymore keyboard glaudis mouse and delta headphones everything working good and completely plug and play. The only thing is that on heavy games the phone overheats (tonight I got 50°c on cod mobile max settings) and I can't turn off the phone monitor while I'm using external.

Hello mate, did you On the XMODE? bcoz you dont need to. XMODE is useless in gaming COD or PUBG bcoz our phone is already fast so you dont need to turn on XMODE i played with dock since my ROG 1 and XMODE OFF. Also i put a Mini Fan external usb FAN towards the Phone Screens. my average temp is 35 below.
Hello, does anyone knows if there is a way to use a not original docking station?
I purchased a baseus one on Ali express (founded cheap for 10€).
I knew that I couldn't use the original desktop mode, but I thought that I could use another app to have tesktop mode. I was wrong: connected to my TV in the living room, connected the power supply and when I insert the rogphone 3 on the port (doesn't matter if the lower one or the sided one) it just play the sound of the recognised peripherial and nothing more, it neither charge the battery.
Any suggestion?
Edit:
I'm just stupid: I wasn't using a charger with enough output
