Screen burn? BOE & LG, both same - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

I had Mate 20 Pro with LG display and got it exchanged due to display issues (greenish in total darkness, low brightness). Now I got with BOE display, but I found out one issue that I had on LG screen too. Check the video that I recorded back on LG display. Exact same issue is on new phone with BOE display. To explain:
watching YouTube video in full screen and after a minute or two I exit the full screen and want to check notifications. When I slide down notification bar, the white part of YouTube with description of video is part black, part white.
Same goes if I play for example fortnite. Loading screen show like it is burned. I have new device for less then week.
Any idea, is this display again or something else? No, it's not normal for OLED displays, at least not by my experience in all years with OLED displays..
https://youtu.be/7cqlff7Zm-U

Same issue on the darktheme only visible in youtube though.

On new phone I'm using white/light theme, not dark anymore and issue is still here.

Also visable by me at only youtube app.

Same only in YouTube and when I click back and watch another video in small size the burn is not there, is it a software thing?

This is what I would like to know too. I don't see that problems on Samsung and Oneplus 6 (both amoled). This could be either software or displays are really faulty.

This is a display issue, anand tech highlighted it in their review. I've already sent a phone back because if it. It differs in severity from device to device but I've had this on BOE and LG screens.

Image retention (which I don't have) is normal, is rare, but does happen on LG displays usually.
Screen burn in is NORMAL on amoled. Your years of experience are wrong. I see burn in on every single amoled display within days or weeks of use and over 2 years the burn is is quite pronounced whether you see it or not.

It's not burn in, it's a bug with the content adaptive brightness control (CABC) system they're using that persists even though the screen content has changed. It's a software problem not a hardware one.

I do guess you read only what you want?
1. It is NOT on LG, it is BOE.
2. Phone is 1 week old and this is from day 1. And by your experience it is normal that screen is burned on first day?

They can fix it with a software update (I think).
It is mentioned further in this review of the mate 20 pro:
https://www.anandtech.com/show/13503/the-mate-20-mate-20-pro-review/7

This came out today from total darkness. on every photo is written about camera settings. BOE display
http://imgur.com/a/1ZKMP3R

I have a BOE and don't have any of those issues, the only issues are with I am guessing a software graphic driver with the Google dark colour on Huawei video app and occasionally in the XDA app sometimes the colour isn't always the same shade it has gradients of lighter Shades. Although this doesn't happen in Google messaging or the Google phone and contact apps. It's strange that it only happens in the two apps.

LG G6 Image Retention

Hi guys,
Just upgraded to the G6 from the OnePlus One. I have the H870DS. It's pretty good, I'm enjoying the phone. The camera is pretty great and it's pretty smooth altho I really did feel the difference from custom ROMs with the One to the skin of LG on the first day but now I'm pretty used to it. There are definitely some things I miss like being able to jump into the battery usage quickly from the notification bar, etc etc.
Anyway, my only real issue is with image retention. I noticed it on the very first day. You can only see it against certain dark colors tho but not against black thankfully. It's not permanent image retention, it goes away if you don't use your screen for a while. It tends to retain images that have been on the screen for a while (Especially with Always On Display) but it doesn't retain them for too long and goes away after a while.
It's a minor annoyance and it doesn't get in the way of usability. It's not glaring or anything just annoying when you can see ghosted images sometimes like when you pull down the status bar (the dark tint + my plain wallpaper makes it show easy). Just wanted to know if you guys are getting this too and if you guys have any solutions or remedies for this.
I did not get this on my G6 but was prepared for this issue since it has been a massive issue with earlier LG phones such as the V10. The problem is that it usually gets much worse over time and my V10 had developed permanent image retention that came after minutes of use after resting over the night. So it was pretty much permanent you could say.
One thing could stop it from happening totally though. Installing the app I will link below, set the filter to the darkest one and opacity to just 3% which is enough. Was not a perfect solution but the only solution.
I really hoped this would not be an issue with the G6 too. LG are basically the only manufacturer with this problem. It's much much worse than on Amoled even.
If you can I would exchange your unit. Mine did not have this at all. If yours has it out-of-box it's troublesome.

I actually got mine 2nd hand from a guy and didn't notice until after using it for a day and by then it was too late. The guy said he never had any issues and thinks I'm scamming him so yeah I'm stuck with this phone now. So I guess I should try to get rid of this as soon as I can before it gets worse?
I also read some comments saying it might be about heat? Like the heat from using it is what causes the image retention and since I live in the Philippines, my average phone temp is a lot higher than some of you guys' temps I'm guessing so if it really is related to temperature than I feel like that's probably why it so easily happens with mine.
I'll try out your app and see if it helps!

Just to clarify, what did the app do for you exactly? Did it prevent the screen from creating retained images or does it just hide them so you don't see them but they're still technically there?

I can't guarantee though that it also works on the G6. But it did in fact work on the V10.

Blue filter app is a well known solution for this problem in every LCD device, another solution would be change the display colors with root (worked on my G5).
Anyway there is no need for a Blue filter app as the G6 as it included in settings "comfort view"

Yeah but it will make the screen more yellow which the OP probably don't want. This just darkens the screen by a very small bit it's barly noticeable at 3% opacity and will not change the screen colors as the filter is black/grey. Seems to be enough to prevent the scren from displaying #FFFFFF.

So it's just #FFFFFF that gets retained? Other colors like slightly different shades of white do not?
Related question: In your experience, does LG Warranty cover this issue say 5, 6, 7 or even 11 months after purchase? And what do they do? Do they replace the screen? Or is this not covered?

They cover the issue only if it's really bad (personal experience with G5) until 12 months, after is the seller that have to give you warranty services if you are in Europe
Wait. I didn't think image retention was even a thing on LCDs. I thought that was strictly an AMOLED issue. Is this specific to LG phones?

Imagre retention happens on LCDs, Burn-In on OLED displays, these are two differents things, the first one is due to a bad assembly (like happened to G5) and/or a bad display color managment, it's fixable by editing colors or using a blue light filter, and anyway it will always disappear if the display stays off for some minute (it depends on how bad the retention is), the second one is specific of ALL OLED displays, this means that it could happen on every device with an oled display and a static image on it, also this is permanent.

Does the lg g6 have really bad image retention after 2 to one year of use or it a problem for the past lg phones

I have it since april, it's bad only if you use an app with static images for hours (for me it was fate go and telegram), but it's visible only with grey background at 80% brightness and disappears in some hours.
Really, coming from a G5, I can say that the problem here is far from being a real problem.
My device has some pretty bad image retention near the nav bar where the keyboard would be after having owned it for ~5 months. Theres an off-center patch of the screen that is brighter than the rest.

Mate 10 Pro - Display Problem? Anyone else?

So, i got my self Mate 10 Pro week ago, and i've noticed it has some display issues with uniformity.
I've found out this by accident, during reading before sleep i have it at lowest brightness possible, so it doesn't tire my eyes.
Anyway when is it set at lowest brightness (with darker colors present) there seems to be that left side of display is darker than right one.
I took some pictures so you can better see what i mean.
Am i alone in this, or is it widespread with other Mates?
Is this a reason to file up warranty case, or Huawei can get away with it because that seems to be nature of (AM)OLED displays?
It is "itching" me now... To pay like 800 euros for flagship device, only to find out that it has issues.
Can any from you take some pictures of your device and post it?
It has to be done in dark room with lowest brightness.
Hello,
for the pictures with the light in the middle:
What app is this?
I'd be happy trying to reproduce this.
It is OLED Tools app from play Store:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.oledtools&hl=en
Take the last test called Uniformity Test.
When you are there swipe left to lower the brightness.
Also you can choose the color, for my unit problem was best visible with grey and green.
Let me know with results!
My M10 Pro screen looks perfect.
And mine mate 10 pro screen looks all right testing with this app
So it is my unit after all.
Looks like i'll need to send it for a repair.
I have the same. did you return to the website? did they do something?
Just sent it today to the official Huawei Service Centre (here in my country). Now i need to wait a few days for them to receive it, and see what they say.
BTW, you have the same thing, left side darker than right one? Or different?
in my case it is darker in the left corner.
any new news?
What brightness are your pictures? in this app i have left 0 (all black) and right 31 (bright)
When around 8 my bottom screen loocks darker... but i never noticed it during normal usage so i do not care
btw: i can recreate it in chrome too so its not just the app
I think this is normal oled behaviour... I never use it on min brightness anyway/wouldnt have noticed wihtout you pointing it out
Since there seem to be multiple people here with this problem i think its normal oled... just google it

exactly...OLED simply works like that... i had similar "issue" with sgs7 phone only in low brightnes..OLED cannot compare with LCD when it comes to flickering or pulsing this is the way they work and we should accept it.
Well, I'm still waiting for device, since the official Huawei repair shop considered/recognized it as display issue. Probably they are waiting for parts (display) so it can be replaced.
EDIT:
Brightness was around 7 in the app. That way the problem was most visible.
I got my phone back today. In service report it states that they changed display along with back side glass (i assume because of waterproof properties of the phone).
Anyhow, with the new display, phone have the same problem, so i guess it isn't the problem per se, its just nature of OLED...
[/COLOR]I'm experiencing the same problem on my 3rd device now. That's right! Third! I've returned my phone 2 times, and gotten a replacement each time. The problem still persists...
Still struggling with the seller and Huawei to get it fixed, but it's looking grim.
I have the same problem. Typical for oled. All Note 4 and galaxy s7 had same problem...
Send it back and get a new one from Amazon. I saw this problem with the camera in white or clears walls. It seems "banding".
Send it back another time, this new unit is worse that last.

Hi! Do you have the problem now and don't exchange it?
I had in january the Mate 10 Pro and sold it, because I had the same display problem.
Then I bought in April the P20 Pro. This device had the problem, too!
1 week ago I got the Mate 10 Pro for a very good price, but this device have the problem again!
I think, it's a normal behaviour of HUAWEI OLED Screen.
You can exchange and exchange it, and the problem will come again.
Same here. Left side is darker at low brightness.
Thinking about trading it in for a normal Mate 10. That one has an IPS display. I really have no use for dual SIM, so I couldn't care less about losing that.
HUAWEI is using LG's OLED panels, so issues are very common. They're not very good compared to Samsung's new panels, but also way cheaper.

BOE screen Inferior. Anyone have a good one?

I know this is not the place to discuss general issues with the phone but I signed up as these forums have the most and best discussions on the issues. I am on my 3rd Mate 20 Pro as the first two LG ones had the screen bleed issue.
Now I have a BOE screen but it looks absolute trash. It lacks brightness and contrast and has a pink tint towards the top and a green tint at the bottom when you view white pages. Also when I watch videos I get awful colour banding etc on gradients. Also I get odd tints etc whenever I look at the phone from almost any angle. I am so so so disappointed.
I'm just curious if anyone has a BOE screen that is as good as the original LG ones (minus screen bleed obviously) as I don't want to send this back if I'm going to get the same crappy screen back. I'm so frustrated and will never buy a Huawei product again.
I have a BOE Seems really great, nice vibrant colours, whites and Blacks are really good. Only issue I have is if you turn off the adaptive brightness the powergenie dims most Google and Facebook apps. But the last few days I have left the adaptive brightness on auto and it seems to not dim as much. I tend to push the brightness up a little bit though.
Something I have noticed, not related to the screen, is I occasionally hear a little click in the sound, I'm not sure what that is. Unless big brother is activating my microphone. ?

I must admit, I do notice the colour issue mostly in Chrome but it doesn't seem to be exclusive to it. Plus the colour banding issue is really bad on mine. For instance, at 1:28 on this video (https:// youtu.be/tO01J-M3g0U) the sky has awful banding and also an actual flickering. I guess I have a bad display. I just wonder if they will see it or just send it back. It's definetly there and anyone used to good screens would see it however my aging parents said there was nothing wrong with it so it isn't obvious to anyone not used to an OLED screen and I imagine they could easily say they see no issues. Ahhhh.
No issues with my BOE screen. If you secretly swapped it with a (good) LG I wouldn't notice.

Ooooooh interestingly that is exactly what mine looks like but reversed and guess what... Same build number. Did you get yours replaced with Huawei or a retailer?
Got my BOE 18B23, looks great - you might have a faulty one.
Looks like a faulty BOE screen...I examined mine obsessively within my 2 weeks return period and found no issues. It MIGHT be a bit less bright that LG, but I am comparing it with Youtube videos and Interweb pics, so it's a false call.
Happy so far.
Definitely looks like you have a defective BOE display. I got mine today (18B23) and it's great, at least compared to my old V30 it's much better.

I received a refund after an email to the Carphone Warehouse CEO. As the IMEI I had was from Huawei not CPW. The CPW have been absolutely fantastic to me.
I went yesterday hell bent on a pixel 3xl. But I was drawn toward the Mate 20 Pro. After much discussion with the manager I ended up walking out with a Mate 20 Pro, 18B26 and it absolutely perfect. It's what the phone should have been from the get go. Uniform, responsive, fast fingerprint scanner, sharp and vibrant.

I have EXACTLY the same problem as you. This is also my 3rd Mate 20 Pro. First was LG, with the green glow issue, that was visible only in dark room with brightness set to minimum and grey background (I am still mad why I returned it, because it was better than BOE) . My second device had a BOE screen with very very bad screen uniformity at low brightness. And now my third Mate has also BOE screen with the same problem as yours. Lower half of the display has a green tint and the upper half has a pink tint. I dont mind if the screen has a tint, because that can be "repaired" by tweaking color temperature. But this is super annoying. When you scroll on sites with white background you can see how it goes from green to pink tint. Otherwise screen is great and therefore I also have a concern about the next device that I might get as a replacement, as this is clearly a lottery now. I am probably going to wait until like a month and then try to get a replacement (I hope they will admit something is wrong with the display) . It is not really affecting the day-to-day usage of the device, it is just my eyes and heart is hurting when looking at the display. Maybe I am just too picky, but I expect from the device which costs 1k€ to be worthy of its price in every department, especially display.

This complete echos my device and my sentiments about the whole thing. For the money this device should not have the issues. It is a fact. This is my first Huawei device and I'm almost certain it will now be my last.
I also don't know which device I would buy, instead of Mate 20 Pro. Once you get used to this IR facial recognition, fingerprint scanner becomes almost useless. It works in every conditions and it's sometimes even too fast. I've been using Mate 9 for the last 2 years and it was super fast from the first to the last day. I got used to the EMUI, gestures are awesome! Oh, and I must not forget about the wide angle lens, it's great. I was thinking about the Note 9, the best display, performance wise also very good (not on pair with Kirin 980 though), camera also very good, fingerprint scanner on the back with facial recognition that is significantly slower and on top of that it's still Samsung, which means that it will get very slow in just a year from buying it (it's also almost 100€ more in my country). Another alternative is OnePlus 6T, display is good, performance it's excellent, software is the best right now, the cameras are on pair with the Note 9, but it lacks wireless charging, IP rating, facial recognition depends only on camera (it doesn't work in the dark) and I can't get it from my carrier. Mate 20 Pro is also the King when it comes to the battery life! So from my point of view, there are no real alternatives to the Mate 20 Pro and I really don't know what to do. Part of me wants to get a replacement ASAP (I am scared of that also), but the other part wants to get something else, because this is going nowhere.
I think a lot of the XDA reports about the LG screens being defective were phony and were made to create mischief and discourage people from buying this phone.
When the gluegate reports started coming in on XDA easily 70% were from XDA accounts that were new and were opened specifically to report supposedly defective screens. How could anybody not have found that suspicious?
The supposed screen bleed issue is a joke. People were comparing the folded OLED on the Mate 20 Pro with Samsung phone screens that don't have folded OLED displays. Obviously the results are going to be different because they are not the same kind of displays. It is 100% normal to have bleed on the edges with a folded OLED display and it is also normal for the edges of the display to look lighter when doing the "uniformity test" that people were told proved the displays were defective.
If you go into the display settings it takes less than 10 seconds to make it appear that your screen has "gone hulk" and take a screenshot.
I have a UK Mate 20 Pro that was preordered before launch. It has an LG display from the initial batch that multiple XDA members claim were 100% defective. The display looks great and is not defective in any way.
A few weeks ago I purchased a 256GB global version and planned to upgrade. But that phone had a BOE display that was very inferior to the LG one so I ended up returning it. The BOE screen had washed out colors and was noticibly less bright than the LG display which is the reason people don't see screen bleed at the edges. Pixel response was also slower than the LG display.
A lot of people who participated in a "screen lottery" and kept returning M20P phones until they got one with a BOE display ultimately found that those displays had inferior color and brightness to the LG display.
I'm pretty certain there was nothing wrong with the phone you returned. Unfortunately I have seen 3 M20P phones with BOE displays and all 3 had washed out colors compared to the LG display.

green edges glue gates after months

Who can shares his expérience with the mate 20 pro coming with gluegate issue and green edges (lg screen) does it get worse over time ? Do we can minimise risk and how much time as per your expérience the phone will stand? Got my new mate 20 pro as a gift without any chance of replacemnt with warranty
Never experienced green edge gluegate problem despite the fact that I have an LG display, bought my phone at launch and my phone is part of the batch people on XDA claimed repeatedly was 100% defective.
You see green edges in your display when exactly? In certain apps? All apps? Specific conditions?

In low light when the brightness is at 0 in a grey background the left side is yes greeny and im afraid that it will extend and be unusable as maby video shown in youtube.
Just once brightness increased problem disappear
I got mine just after launch and there is a slight green hue around the edges under the usual conditions (LG panel) but it was never bad enough for me to want to return it. It's not got any worse since I had it (nearly 6 months now.)
If you've only just got yours then I'd imagine you'll be okay as they were supposed to have sorted the issue in later batches.
Had mine since launch, only really shows the problem under very dark conditions. Try taking a picture with another phone, it really does highlight green screen issues. I'm going to return mine this week.
I've had mine for about two weeks and don't have the screen issue as I believe the screen manufacturer was changed from LG to another at some point.

I believe that huwaei are only using BOE screens now

POCO F1 image retention or LCD burnout on MIUI stock ROM please help.

Hi there, I am using 6/64 GB variant POCO F1 for one and a half years recently I noticed problem like screen burning, on my display. If I use any app for 5 to 10 mins I see a shadow of the same app for 20-30 mins behind the screen. It is more clearly visible in dark mode or dark grey background.
Is there, anyone facing the same issue or knows whether it is a software issue or there is something wrong with the LCD panel? And if its a hardware issue where in India can I change my LCD panel for a good price with good quality?
I posting the Pictures of Screen shadow below, please check it out.

It's a hardware issue. Have an issue like that too. It happens intermittently, but isn't really an issue for me anyway because when I switch to another app it's not too noticeable. Usually happens when I read manga since the screen is mostly white, then there's artifacts for a while then is barely noticeable.
As to where you can get it fixed in your country, sorry I'm not from India so I don't know. But if there's a Xiaomi store/service center they should be able to help you
You can greatly reduce that effect on stock MIUI by going to Display > Color Scheme and change it from Automatic to Standard. Been having the same issue for about 8 months (my device is 18 months old), other than that, haven't had any other display problems, so there isn't much of a reason to replace the lcd pannel (unless you're still under warranty).
Had the same issue with a replacement screen, but after some time i decided that it bothered me too much, so i decided to replace the screen again, and now everything is fine.
