Is it worth buying? - Huawei Mate 20 Pro Questions & Answers

I purchased a Note 9 when it was released and loved it but eventually caught the Huawei/Honor bug and ended up selling the Note 9. After I'm now looking for a phone to replace it and the only one that takes my fancy is the Mate 20 Pro.
My question is - Is it worth it? Is there a better Huawei/Honor phones that would be a better purchase at this point?
Thank you x

If you are able to wait until end of March, the new P30 pro is rumored to have a similar screen size but should have improved cameras.
Otherwise, the mate 20 pro is probably their best (or p20 pro if you want a smaller size which I'm guessing you don't).
I would only say that if you take a lot of selfies, you will probably be disappointed (fixed focus, post processing is meh) but otherwise, lots of flexibility with the cameras and I personally use nova launcher so I don't see their original Gui which is often a complaint.
Edit: you could also check the Mate 20 X. Bigger screen (7.2") and stylus support if that's your thing. Same cameras. Waterdrop type notch (no face id) and you lose a few extras like ip68.

I think it would be wise to wait at the moment. Not only have we got the P30 series soon but also the Galaxy 10 range later this month and they look like they might be quite good.

No why support a company that has turned its back on developers by not allowing unlocking the bootloader after allowing it for so long

Wait for s10 or p30.

i decided to ditch the mate 20 pro after a month. (poor battery life compared to p20 pro and regular mate 20) and the screen issues.
i went to for the bigger mate 20 x as a second phone (media games internet etc) cuz of its battery, screen, speakers, real FP scanner, no screen issues and the same cameras as the mate 20 pro.
waiting for the s10 plus to replace my note 9 as a primary phone

Thanks for all the replies. Personally don't care about bootloaders and I never root my phones anymore. But concerned about the amount of replies telling me not to go for it.
As I'm currently using a £250 mid-range Honor Play phone, I'm really wanting to upgrade asap and with the deals on new mate 20 pros at £600 floating around, I still may ignore advice and go for it! I guess I could always upgrade again in a few months time to the P30 or S10!
Thanks again for all the replies, I appreciate it.

Don't get me wrong. Personally, I think it's a great phone and if you're in the market for an upgrade and don't care about timing then go for it. I was merely saying that if you're after the latest and greatest then waiting a few extra weeks might be prudent.
I've not rooted a phone for ages, I don't think there's really the need so much now that Android has gotten so much better over the years, so that aspect doesn't worry me either.

Love the mate 20 Pro and that's coming from a note 9. Software not as refined as sammys with a few glitches but works well

I sold my P20 Pro and got the Mate 20 Pro .. much better. IMO I'd grab a M20P if you find one at a good price, the P30 Pro won't be cheap and I doubt the specs will over shadow the M20P, maybe better camera (slightly) and no notch .. not flagship selling points worth the higher price if compared to a discounted M20P.
My 2 cents ..

Pixel 2 (regular) trading for mate 10 pro

Hi d00ds,
I'm thinking of exchanging my pixel 2 for the mate 10 pro. What do you guys think?
I don't care for the camera as I barely use it on my pixel. Main things are software experience and battery life
Thanks!

Hi!
The camera is the biggest drawback on this phone, but if you dont care about that the phone in general is great. Battery life is insane! 6 hours SOT without powersave. Lasts days if you turn down resolution and turn on powersave. There are useful functions in the Emui that I enjoy as well.
Get the regular Mate...best phone ever...put Nova on it. Camera is great.
Dont
Just DONT
Huawei P20 pro will be out end of this month.
Depends on the price.
If you love stock android, just wait for the whole treble thing to mature.
I came from years of Nexus / OnePlus devices. I simply HATE EMUI, even with Nova and everything changed to the max to fit what I would call a decent OS, EMUI makes it look like a hackjob...
But for me the Camera is great (coming from a OP5T) the stereo speakers are not the best thing ever (still sure the Nexus 6P had the best speakers... Sad Huawei didn't continue in that direction)
It of course also depends on what you want from a screensize point of view... (PS : The Screen is awesome)
Love it great camera not sure why people are slating it reviews are very positive too, battery best I've had easily a day and half with moderate usage. But my favourite feature is Emui projection perfect work tool for me using a hp lapdock
Thanks for the replies d00ds!
If I do ahead with the swap I can get the mate 10 pro for £529 from CPW sim free
Like I said before not bothered about the camera as I hardly use it. Just performance and battery life are most important to me
I'm hearing and reading different reviews on YouTube, some say the phone is a beast, while others say EMUI completely ruins the phone. So I'm at a bit of a crossroads

If a dedicated Dev is ready to work on the little tidbits, we could quite quickly have a good working AOSP base for our phones as I don't see many things missing (will maybe try to do a recap of I have time)
As no phone on the market suits me right now and I want to wait for the whole "1000+dollar phone with ugly notches" thing to calm down this phone is a great compromise and quite cheap to find sometimes.
Dude if u insist I am willing to trade u with a mate 10 regular not pro
It has a headphone jack. 2k display. Memory card and 16:9 screen.

I have the mate 10 pro from Vodafone. It really is a good phone. Battery amazing, camera amazing. Updates are fast ish. I've not had a fault with mine. . I've not even had the need to root it either

I would say do it, both phones are very good but as I've used a Huawei in the past I was used to EMUI, even though Nova is my launcher of choice
Only you can then experience first hand it its good enough for you but for the price point is definitely value for money
You can even pick up some bargains online and get it even cheaper if your not bothered
All the best
If the video camera matters to you, I'd say don't do it.
The video recording ability of this phone is the same as the mate 9. Any slight jolt or knock results in some strange wobbling video effect. I've tried with stabilisation and without.
I recorded a takeoff while on my way to the states and I wash shocked at how awful the quality was. My mate has an S8+ and I tried that for landing. The difference was astonishing.
The camera on the Mate 10 Pro is fabulous generally and I've taken to brilliant shots that trump may mates S8+ but I'm so very disappointed by the video recording. The video distortion is just so bad. My old Note 4 takes batter video with no jitter.
For this reason I'm contemplating getting rid of my Mate 10 pro. In so many areas it excels but video recording for me is important. Unless I find a way to reduce the jitter, its probably going.
What OIS system to Huawei use?

Convince me to get the mate 20 pro (vs pixel 3 xl/ op 6t)

Hey,
After an upgrade of my HTC U11+. A bit stuck to be honest on which one to go with as they all have big pluses and minuses. I think my ideal phone would be the mate 20 pro hardware with pixel software.
Will give my pro's and minuses below, please feel free to comment and advise as you see fit.
Mate 20 pro
++ Big battery
+ Not bad price wise (especially with the free watch)
+ cameras
+ nice colours
- Lack of updates??
Pixel 3 XL
++ best software
+ great camera
+ great update support
+ great speakers
-- average battery life
-expensive
Oneplus 6T (based on rumours
+price
+Smooth UI
+good support
- camera probably wont be as good as the other 2
-speakers wont be as good
+/- battery in the middle
Out of these three I'd definitely go with the Mate 20 Pro. the Pixel is boring and too ugly and no features at all (I wouldn't consider it at all unless I absolutely need their camera) , OP6 is just cheap price but is missing wireless charging, QHD display, IP68, stereo speakers, camera will be just average, AOD display, desktop mode, raise to wake, knuckle gestures, secure face unlock, etc. But if you don't care about those, the OP6 will be faster/smoother than Mate 20 pro and maybe their underdisplay implementation could be a little bit faster but we'll see
I'm going through the same motions so can't "convince" you, but here are some additional thoughts.
*Pixel QC is still sub par. Quite a few hardware inconsistencies popping up. You won't see this with Huawei
*Pixel 3 speakers and haptics are FAR better
*Huawei software is bad for reasons people don't extrapolate upon
Question marks behind software updates should be removed. This is definitely a negative mark against Huawei.
Lockscreen is abysmal. Unable to expand, reply, or interact with any notifications
Background app restrictions are seriously annoying. Google photos will randomly not backup like your using an iphone. Services like android messages for PC, Mightytext, or Pushbullet will randomly stop working, Dropbox background sync won't work consistently, etc.
Huawei still isn't a brand developers seem to pay attention to, so bugs (think odd aspect ratio bugs) will take longer to get fixed.
*6T should be immediately disregarded unless cost or ROM support are of concern. Imagine you know this already.
Huawei hardware is beautiful, but the software and updates is a serious downer. (not just because it's a skin - EMUI looks fine visually imo) Ultimately, I think the ugly 3XL is still the better device for most..
No bootloader unlock, no root, no mods, no roms vs oneplus and pixel unlimited development..

I'm really hopeful that we'll at least get root...... I've preordered the Mate 20 Pro and will be selling my Pixel 2 xl, hope I don't live to regret it! Worst case scenario I'll sell it and switch...
Well Pixel XL 3 is trash. I returned mine after 2 days.
Oneplus 6T is a bang for buck type of phone
Mate 20 Pro I'm having issues getting one imported
Probably didn't help much but aye.

Great post, and for these reasons Huawei don't deserve £899 for their phone as pretty as it is. when the honeymoon period wears off you'll be noticing that lack of software support. I'm still debating getting a M20P myself, it would be easier if Huawei stepped their game up with software support and allowed the users to bypass background closures.

I think you hit the nail on the head regarding honeymoon period. I had (2) P20 Pro's and I loved the hardware/camera, but quickly became annoyed with the fact that EMUI just doesn't "work" as an android phone should. After using MIUI 10 on a Mix 2s for a few weeks, I would say that Xiaomi's derivative feels more natural to use. /sad

Do you know if these issues are still there in the Mate 20 Pro? That and Android Auto (connecting to a head unit) are very important to me. I don't believe that worked correctly on previous Huawei devices either.

Had someone on Reddit confirm that the lockscreen is still the same. Some have said it is a bug, but seems working as intended to me. (Been a "bug" since EMUI 8.1)
I haven't inquired about backgrounding issues. Not much point. This has been a thing with EMUI since day 1. (And other China OEMs too)
Thanks for the replies very helpful. I know the mate 20 pro is the best out of the bunch its whether i can live with EMUI. I had this in the past with samsung s6 edge, loved the phone but hated the software and ended up getting rid of it very quickly. I think if the pixel was £100 cheaper or had a bigger battery i would 100% go with that for the software experience.
The decision would be so much easier if they allowed bootloader unlock and custom roms would solve half the issues! Still no closer to the decision.
A couple of extra points
Mate 20 curved screen will be a pain for glass screen protectors so thats a -
Still cant work out if the UK model is single sim or dual sim! (says its micro sd expandable so is that where the extra sim goes)
I think the camera will be just as good as the pixel...in some ways better because of the wide angle lens etc. The pixel 3 probably will be the best point and shoot but I don't think either will dissapoint you
I've bite the bullet and pre ordered the mate 20 pro.
What really turned the tide for me is 2 videos on youtube, 1 a speed comparison against the note 9 and it smashed it, which proved to me it wont be a laggy crappy software (mostly)
and 2nd a battery drain test which it got nearly 7 hours of SOT which was 2 hours better than the note 9 and 3 hours more than most of the others.

yer the watch did help me decide.
What i dont get in the UK is its 899 sim free, the pixel 3 xl 64gb is around 850 yet all the contracts for the huwaei are coming out about £5 a month less, also helped me decide.

See i went with sim free but what got me here is 50 quid more for mate, and free watch and charger is 250, so basically mate is working out 200 quid cheaper and 6gb ram vs the 4 and this massive battey, when pixie 3 battery is sitting at 3400 compared to my pixel 2 xl 3500 with a smaller screen? Impulse buy but hey, if we somehow hate it, or cant get used to it... Swap or sell after few months right? It aint a new car xd
It's very easy : get the pixel 3 and then youll want to get the mate 20 Pro for sure!
Preorderd mine today. Can't wait to finish a day without worrying at all about the battery. That's the feature I'm most excited about, since every phone, at this price, seems to have a great camera and screen. Really not that excited that I'll get to open youtube a half a second faster than other phones. Also, EMUI can be improved with apps and themes.

Pretty excited about this as well, I'm pretty sure I will still average about 6000 mah a day, I almost always charge from like 50 to 90% using wireless charging while at work but for the days I forgot to wireless charge, the fact that even if I get home with less than 5% and just plugging it in for like 15 minutes (instead of like 40 minutes like my note 9) and being back to like 40% to finish the day is amazing.
I agree

Life after Mate 10, which device?

I've been pretty happy with my Mate 10 but feel it's time for a change. Almost got the Mi 9T Pro but then specs for the Oneplus 7T emerged and that is now the favourite. Tried the Oneplus 7 Pro earlier but hated the curved screen. Mate 30 probably out due to the google apps nonsense.
Just wondered what fellow Mate 10 users have moved to and how it worked out. Or which device(s) you have your eye on?
Personally if it's confirmed that Mate 10 will be getting Android Q then it's a must keep for another year and maybe 1 more after that. Even without that It does all I need and more. Never been happier with a phone.
I'm a bit picky about the design of my phone, I hate curved screens, notch, teardrop, cut out designs. And Mate 10 doesn't fall into any of that. I don't like the current trends I just want compromise. But that's only personal preference.
Currently I'm holding off until the Mate 40 comes out next year, and when that time comes I'll start weighting things.
Good thing U have many brands to choose from but no need to rush unless u are having serious problems with your device, where I live the only choices are huawei and Samsung so I only upgrade when it's really crucial to do so, and that's not even close right now.
I hope this helped u. Peace.
My mate 10 pro will have an afterlife in the hands of my wife. :fingers-crossed:
But it won't be a Huawei anymore. Just because there is no development around these brand and that sucks.
For now I would prefer Oneplus devices. Also Xioami isn't too bad either.
Will see what the market has to offer next year.
I am fascinated by all the new devices that come out. But also I always come to the conclusion. that the Mate 10 (Pro) is still a very good smartphone that is very capable of keeping up with the new ones. Sure the wide angle and zoom lenses are great and also the SoC are better in Benchmarks, but at the end of the day my Mate 10 Pro can do all I need.
One reason why I decided to buy a flagship smartphone in 2017 was "I want a phone that can keep up for a while". I knew I didnt need the flagship SoC performance but I bought it so it would still be fast 2 years later. Now the time begins where I think I profit of paying extra in 2017. Thatswhy I'll keep it till it breaks, hopefully many years from now. I will soon order a new battery and replace it myself (while also changing my shattered back panel). Very happy with the device and Huaweis promise "wont slow down within at least 2 years" proved to be right.
I change device because i would reduce form factor, but with best camera

Personally, I love mine and I have no reason to upgrade. If I could pick any, I would still be pretty open minded as I don't do roms so bootloader locked isn't an issue for me. As long as it is pretty equal in features to price ratio and it has all the ones I need, gladly it can be my next.
It's amazing I've had my M10P for almost two years cos it's as new and fast as the day I bought it!
I gave my Mate9 to my wife then and she stopped using her Sammy for the M9. I wanted to get her a Y9prime but she wants the M10P so I guess it's the M30P for me.
I used to have LGs (G2, G3, V10 & G5) - the last two got affected by bootloop and being out of US, I wasn't entitled to a replacement. Those days, I flashed custom ROMs bi-weekly my favourite was Cloudy.
I didn't think I could survive with a locked bootloader but here I am 3 & 1/2 years after switching to Mate 9.
I will still stick to Mate series but I wish Huawei will create their own OS probably off Sailfish which means we can still install Google services.
If Huawei want to retain market share, they should unlock bootloader in devices as it'll not only keep us but also entice new users of their devices.
Talking about changing devices, I may go for the new P30 Pro.
But if I had to move away from Huawei all together, I'll consider the K20 Pro as an alternative - for me, it's better than OP7 Pro
Edit:
I think I may go for Asus ROG phone II or Xiaomi Black Shark 2 Pro
I'm going through the same dilemma. I usually change phones very fast. But its been 1.5 yrs with the Mate 10 Pro and there's nothing in the market that comes close to being a great replacement for this. My only problem now is that the updates haven't come in for 2 months now (US Version) and I don't think it'll get any more. I love the camera, speaker, bluetooth strength, Wifi speeds and just how smooth and fast it is even after 1.5 yrs.
But, if there has to be a replacement, then I might go for the Pixel 4 or jump over to the iPhone 11. Waiting for their announcements to see how good they are.

Still waiting to see what the Pixel brings to the table.
The iPhone 11 Pro has a wide angle camera which is the only thing missing in the Mate 10 Pro. Pics will be good for a flagship, and videos are the best as usual. iOS is not to my taste and the max I've held an iPhone is for 4-5 months (8 plus). Since nothing major has changed in iOS 13, I'm in a dilemma.
No more Huawei's for me, because just like any other manufacturer, updates stop coming after a point or are really slow. My Mate10 Pro hasn't received an update for 2 months now. Yeah, they've been much better than Samsung or LG, but that's nothing to boast about.

I haven't been getting updates but I have 2 possible reasons,
A- not in the region I bought my phone.
B- been in repair for the past month.
Same for me I love the M10P but as my contract is renewing next month I thought about buying the M30P and just install the g services myself but I am not so sure about it. What would you all do buy the M30P or something else?

I'd buy the M30P. If you were happy with Huawei than it's the best choice imo. I'd just wait for some real reviews to see if you really can get all Google services to work properly.
I won't buy mate 30 PRO, reason - notch. My next phone will have about 7 inches screen. I'm waiting for HONOR NOTE 20 but nobody can say something about release date. I wanted to buy HONOR NOTE 10, but there's a problem with B20 range and Jack 3,5mm.

Why do U need a 7 inch screen?
If I was upgrading and sticking to huawei I'd rather get the Mate 30 (non pro). The only things I don't like are that it doesn't have QHD display and no support for standard SD card. And also I think it doesn't have dual speakers but I'm not sure. I'm holding off until the Mate 40 unless my Mate 10 become unusable.
The lack of Google apps doesn't bother me at all but for the average consumer it could be an issue.
I like to watch a films at my car during my journeys Larger screens are better for this.
I'm leaning towards the Oneplus 7T. It looks like the uk will only get 128gb but Wonda Mobile think they might have the 256gb version in November.

should I buy mate 10 phone in 2020

Hello
Am thinking of getting the mate 10 pro (north america ver). It looks as price and specs wise is pretty good.
Would u owners of the phone recommend of buying it?
Thx in advance
Nope, I'd buy s8 instead or something else like onpleus 7t with even better cpu if available for same price.
They both should offer better performance, mate 10 pro throttles like crazy - to the point where it constantly is above throttling point of 37° C
Just a normal use keeps your device at 40/41° C, few more degrees, at 45° C iirc and your performance dips even further.
They cheaped out on cooling solutions and it hurts really bad, even in every day tasks. You throttle before you even step into cpu/gpu heavy applications, once inside you get horrendous performance out of a cpu that should be able to push 90% of the content at stable 60 fps.
I'm thinking of modifying mine but the design choices make it really hard to do so ?
So yeah, on paper it looks nice but expect real world performance to be much much worse than what you see in comparisons between snapdragon 835 ( I'm not sure if that's the one s8 has) and kirin 970. It's not worth the money when what you get performs like lower class cpu of not even worse - 99% of the time due to poor thermal relief methods.

Nope, I'd buy s8 instead or something else like onpleus 7t with even better cpu if available for same price.
They both should offer better performance, mate 10 pro throttles like crazy - to the point where it constantly is above throttling point of 37° C

I bought the Mate 10 Pro (BLA-L29) new in February 2020 and have not looked back since as it suits my usage perfectly. In the end it is your choice, as our usage patterns are definitely different. I mainly use it for the excellent camera, have it on a HDMI dock during the day as a light usage laptop via desktop experience. Some Asphalt 9 (which does heat up the phone on best quality) and some 1080p movies at night. Being 2017 model, it might be deemed "old"; it does do what it is supposed to excellently though.
Awaiting the Emui 10 update that should drop this month in South Africa. Good luck with your decision.

That, but keep in mind that custom ROMs is a no go with this phone or any other Huawei models. Or remove or bloatware from Huawei.
If the above are important to you maybe OnePlus?
In the end is up to you. If you've found a perfect offer and you do not care about unlocked bootloaders, custom ROMs, rooting etc, then go for it. Great camera for the price.
base how you use this phone. you just call and massage, game or take some photos at the same time. keep use it.

Sure enough, each to themselves ?
But the fact remains that even for your light use a different phone would bring much smoother experience.
We are not really spoiled for choice in South Africa in regards to phones. Mobile companies here are mainly pushing newest iphones, huaweis and Samsungs at premium contract prices locked down for 36 months (for some). And at the other side of the price spectrum some really nasty cheap ones. We don't get many Xiaomi notes here (my previous one was Mido RN4), so it really was a no-brainer to get the Mate 10 Pro at 2 to 3 times less cost. Sucks that the bootloader is locked though, would have liked to run AICP or AEX
as a backup phone for sure i will choose mate 10(not pro version) , because it suite all i need ,i got a brand new old stock mate 10 for cheap price $139 at my country and its still on ancient firmware where i can unlock the bootloader using dc unlock .
Thank u all for ur helpful insights. Current am using mate 9, but I think I ma go for mate 20 although much more expensive then mate 10
Peace

again huawei?

my plan is almost over And have the choice of renewing my plan....
what phone choice are you leaning to?
love the phone but hate the boatloader lock and the option to get vanilla android.....i think I'm going for a Xperia phone again...

I've still several months to go on my plan but I'm looking/considering Xperia X1 ii.
Not a Huawei. because I need Google Apps. Right now my Mate 20 Pro is still the "perfect" phone.
I don't have a huge list of "wants" for my next phone...
1. Decent camera.
2. Reasonably fast software updates (so probably not Sony)
3. Unbloated (so not Samsung or Oppo or Xiaomi)
4. Waterproof
5. 5G would be nice
6. Biggish battery with fast charging.
7. 90 or 120Hz display.
So it's looking like it's either a OnePlus something or the Pixel 5 at the moment. Or I might just go SIM-only on my phone contract and wait until 2021.

Pixel 5 for me when it comes out.
Mate 20 pro
I am very happy with the phone. If I need to replace, I will buy huawei mate series again.:good:
Mine is also up for renewal next month
Waiting for mate 40 Pro
If that is beyond the budget then P40 pro plus or Mi 10 Ultra
Depends if you need GAPPS.
The later Huawei phones are all useless if you do.
Such a shame. Awesome devices crippled by lack of services.

Be careful with that Mi 10 Ultra, I recently have been looking into it, I thought I might try it out, the specs are great but for that price it's lacking some things that it shouldn't be. Ex: it has no waterproofing. Although it may not be necessary to some people, I was caught in rain with my Mate 20 Pro and of course it was okay but I'd be too afraid with that one, especially for that kind of money. And no QHD screen resolution. The battery also seems to get really hot while charging to the point you can't even hold the phone, from what I've seen in some tests and in this article. That's a bit concerning. I mean that extremely fast charger seems great to have but I don't know about the overheating. Just wish they actually perfected it fully not just half way.
