Possibility of AOSP ROMs - Sony Xperia 1 Questions & Answers

This maybe too vague at this point in time, however I was looking at XZ3 development section and there are barely 2 ROMs.
As far as I know Xperia devices have open bootloader so I was expecting lot more development, is that not true?
I mainly am interested in AOSP ROMs because I prefer using phone without google services.
Thanks

I won't work on aosp but I should provide eXistenZ rom [emoji6]

It's wishful thinking but I hope we don't have to go through the whole usual DRM wipe song and dance -> wait for hack/workaround routine again.
Every. Damn. Time.

[Q] ROM support?

Hey guys, I recently got the xperia Z2 over the HTC One M8 to test out before I commit to buying it and having looked on XDA, I can't help but get feeling his phone won't have a great ammount of ROM support from most developers, at least not for a while. Am I wrong in thinking so? I also read somewhere that rooting or unlocking triggers some DRM stuff and things like x-reality stop working. Is this true? If so, what's the point? I though Sony was trying to be more developer friendly? If anyone could answer some of these questions I'd greatly appreciate it. I'm not asking for an ETA on ROMs just that I don't see a massive Sony market in the US and so I feel like it will be lacking in terms of choice. If that is the case and especially if i cannot convert to a GPE equvialent or something then at this point would the HTC one M8 be a better choice?
I also got the Z2 because i liked the phone way better then S5 and M8 but am also worried about developer support. I also got Z which now has quit some support but still not as much as i was used to have on my HTC's.
Phone had a lot of dificulties at launch, late release and stuff, its not even worldwide available yet, but yeah, development wont be as active as s5 or m8, but i prefer quality over quantity, so what if s5 has 10 exactly same roms with different name, you will get all major roms since its one of the currently big 3 phones.

You're wrong, I will soon build a rom for the Xperia Z2
Yeah exactly. I am more worried about the DRM stuff and the fact that I do like stock android so I may want to convert to GPE; in your opinion, is the ROM scene for the M8 worth swapping this phone for?
Thanks niaboc! but do you truthfully think I should wait and do you think there will be a good enough amount of mods etc? Also what about the DRM stuff?

This is great news! I've been missing your Existenz Roms from my Z!
No argument there, the phone did have launch issues definitely. I understand your quality over quantity issue but 3 ROMs I need without fail are PA, Slimkat and a Google play edition; especially the GPE. Do you think that will happen truthfully? On the M8 it already has and its a matter of flashing it now really. I feel like if I choose the Z2 and wait and the experience isn't good then I may be disappointed quite a lot no matter how great the phone is and I'm worried about that seeing as it is an expensive investment!
Drm seems to be a problem of past. I unlocked bootloader, lost drm keys, and only thing i lost is music and video unlimitted service, which i wasnt using anyways. Its your choice, we cannot see future and tell how many roms gonna be here compared to m8, but im sure its gonna be plenty for my needs. I bought z2 and m8, and they both are briliant, but as you can see im using z2 now, while my father got m8. Only real advantage in m8 for me was feeling you get holding it, that shape is amazingly comfortable.

What's the point to have 300 roms who are nearly identicals.

Hmm. You make a good point and I will definitely take that into account. Others are reporting loss of x-reality and features like that which I don't want to be restricted on if I root and unlock my boot loader. As for the M8 you're right it does have an incredible body but the Z2 in white looks so amazing!
Fair enough! I have this phone till the 26th so if it looks good by then, I may keep it! The DRM stuff, I dunno I'll have to deal with it I guess! Thanks!

Why no custom roms here?

Give the devs a break an maybe use this downtime to see how to better the community/your self knowledge/or enlighten yourself with root on you g5! Not being rude, just be patient.

agreed. these things take time. the source code and building it ain't the issue, it's the fact that on most of the g5's are still locked down tight. and the areas (fastboot, etc.) we need to flash said files are locked down tighter than fort knox and we are doing what we can to correct that
Go ahead, sell your phone
I for one love the G5 and will wait (more or less) patiently for a custom rom

Clarification: Best ROM

Hey, so I've seen a lot of people talking about how good XX ROM is and it's better than YY because of something. Also another problem being the question of best ROM.
I'd like to say something: Everyone has their own thinking and point of view, so something's that's not important to you might be imporrtant to someone else, so making judgements like this is better than that is all dependant from person to person. We all know that no two mind think alike. These types of questions discourage developers so please it's my humble request to not post / compare ROMs calling them bad / good. If you don't like a feature then don't use it. Same goes for the ROM. If you can help improve then you most probably can via github or gerrit as some ROMs provide. With that being said. Thanksfor the time to read this post.
I kind of agree. I much prefer to see descriptions with a list of pros and cons rather than a simple "this ROM is better because I like these aspects"

Going to give it ago again tonight... I week or so ago I tried it and had very odd behaviors. Likely just a bad flash (sounds odd, but it does happen) and went back to Oxygen... is there any differences between the UNOFFICIAL and OFFICIAL builds?
How is it that even a thread specifically made to tell people not to ask questions about which rom is best, turns into a rom advice thread.

mm don't know if there is a difference, there is not much out there, i'm using official , last stable, only negative, are random crash apps, most of all google apps... and have to reboot, but the battery life is very very good.
Won't make a separate thread for this but I'll ask here - what are 2-4 most popular ROMs for the OP2 going around nowadays? I've been using Exodus ROM for a long time and I really liked it, but the latest update was November 11th and it looks like the developers have moved on. The ROM is fine, and there's really nothing that I'm missing, but there are some stability issues with random reboots and force close and this is the longest I've gone without updating/changing something so I'm looking to try something new. I want to look into a few different options and read others' reviews and look into features and stuff, but it would be great if you guys could narrow down my search to the few most popular/well known/most supported roms that are currently available.

todo a more gently reply, of course you can get themes that makes you feel like using a samsung phone
just install one of the LOS Roms and use the themes you like
Samsung software on android devices is one of the most hated things in the android world (my opinion)
They destroyed very often the straight forward menu structure from android and its a pain in the ass.
Grow up, enjoy EUI (that is compared to samsungs crapp nice and usable without a knot in the brain^^ )
or use on of the LOS or other customs roms... and if you like samsungs icons...my girlfriend also needs them ^^
..just use the themes from play store .
Have fun ! Enjoy life!
The answer to this question would probably be no as there is not much of a reason to port over Touchwiz to this phone, as well as the fact that Touchwiz is closed source software and therefore can be very tricky to port over. This is the fact that can be said about many of these "custom skins" made by manufacturers that changes too much of the core framework of Android and unless they provide a porting kit "a la miui patchrom", it's next to impossible or not very worthwhile to spend time porting it.
Also guys, please be friendly to each other because this a forum and not a sandbox. It's pretty unnecessary to start with personal attacks when not being able to agree about a certain question and it's better just to provide a good answer to the question in this case. It just leads to a negative atmosphere here and it does only harm everyone in the long term.

Thanks for this Geth, what the other members dont seem to understand is that the rude response is why people either leave in frustration, giving XDA a bad name seeing how the site invites you to see knowledge from it, or stifle any grow in those who are trying to learn for themselves. As I stated before, we are working hard to make Oreo happen for our Axon7 community and bring it to our A7.
An official but half way leaked build was released but not bug free, and we are now working hard and trying to make it working for you guys.
We can relay on innoficial help of ZTE international if it comes to specific problems as we officially work closely together with ZTE, but we really need the community to make it custom and specific to your needs and requests.
Edit:
But that Oreo project has nothing to do with this Vanilla Rom (the Vanillepudding project)

I vote for not pre-installing root, gapps, nor apps. We're in XDA. We should know/learn how to flash aftermarket things.
My humble request would be oms support for substratum.

Unnecessary, oreo supports OMS out of the box, as long as ZTE did not purposefully remove it
An always on display mode (like on the pixel) would be pretty neat.

Okay, I didn't know this ROM was going to be based off the stock ZTE's one.
My request: Black interface on the menus, notification panels, etc like on Swift black substratum theme.
Just keep it clean with no bloatware. That is the most important. Ant a extended power menu will be fine.
hey @Sunn76 - already read about your announcement on the android-hilfe. great thing! as for me i have to second that already posted root-method thing: let the users decide which root method the want and simple leave it non-rooted. i think this keeps things more common and therefore more user-friendly. i also have to second that already mentioned OMS-request. OMS is simply great and fast. To add my few cents i'd suggest signature spoofing support as well as the option to change the selinux to permissive/enforced. Furthermore i think the more common and clean the ROM is the more people will enjoy it and beeing able to fit it to thier needs. Non-gApps would always be prefered
Looking forward to the release!
