Telephoto lens not being used in photo mode - Xiaomi Mi 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

When you use photo mode and toggle 2X it doesn't use the top lens, the telephoto one, it uses the maine with digital zoom, it makes no sense.
The only way to activate that lens is in portrait mode, them is uses the telephoto lens.
For me is a bit illogical not using the optical zoom in photo mode, like the mate 20 line-up does, it would be great that it could be fix in the future with a update.

.... I thought that the detail of the 2x zoom wasn't that good!
Reported to Xiaomi.

What?? You are right..... What a find....

I just also noticed this. Since using gcam with telephoto produces far better results.

Which verison?
Cheers

TelePhoto Lens 2x times zoom is working on Photo mode.
It just depends on the lightning conditions. When it has enough light it uses telephoto.

The zoom lens doesn't work in pro mode!

I might be wrong but I just tested out and found out that the x2 lens doesn't work (engage) in the pro mode! (so you can zoom, but it's only electronic zoom)
What gives?
You can still zoom by dragging two fingers apart (or together). I guess they figure that if you're using pro-mode you want more control than just 1x or 2x.

My point is that it doesn't use the x2 zoom lens once it reaches the x2 and beyond.

Are you shooting in good light conditions? The secondary camera won't be used if lighting isn't great as it's stuck at an f/2.4 aperture

How do you know? How can you tell it's not switching to the telephoto lens at 2x?

Had the same problem with the note 8 and now on the s9 plus. I don't understand why Samsung won't give control over the 2x lens in pro mode
I found out that you can't get a dng with the 2nd lens. Real bollox.
Also thru lightroom cc there's only one camera available
Verstuurd vanaf mijn SM-G965F met Tapatalk
Yep, mine does the same thing. What utter crap. Editing DNG files gives markedly better results than the canned .jpg's, but the DNG is always unzoomed because optical zoom won't engage in Pro mode.
Hey, this is PRO MODE, right fellas? WTF?

£900 and the 2x lens does not work in pro mode.
Samsung are ignoring this problem. Bad ethics. The 2x zoom does not work in pro mode. Cripples the camera use. £900 camera phone and you cannot use the 2x zoom in 'PRO MODE', only in automatic mode. It's insane. C'mon you suits at Samsung. Acknowledge the problem and do something about it.
It's been this way. There's no toggle. If you want the f2.4 just select that lens while in AUTO and then tap PRO. You will now be shooting with the f2.4 lens. Switch back to AUTO and select f1.5, etc. Pain? Yes, but it's not totally unusable.

That just adjusts the aperture on the primary lens. The 2x zoom lens has a fixed aperture so there's no way to change that.
Right now there is no way to use the 2x zoom lens in Pro mode at all

When I select 2X, it's zoomed in hence using the zoom aka f2.4 lens. The key is to do this while in AUTO then select pro mode.
Of course it would be nice if it had a toggle while in pro mode.

I just tried this and the answer is Yes and no.
In darker light, when toggling 2x zoom it actually just uses digital zoom on the primary camera. When you do that in Auto Mode then switch to Pro Mode, the zoom setting is retained.
In bright light, toggling 2x zoom does switch to the telephoto lens. When this happens and you switch directly to Pro mode, it switches back to the primary camera with no zoom.

This is incorrect! when you switch to pro mode the 2x is replaced by the primary lens.
So regardless of good light or not...
YOU CANNOT USE THE 2x in PRO MODE
That is with the stock camera. A tweaked apk of the camera is another matter
Not possible to use 2x 'zoom' lens in pro mode.
For those of you confused about whether you can use 2x zoom in pro mode. You factually cannot. If you cover the 2x lens with your finger after switching to pro mode, it will dawn on you that the camera has switched back to the primary lens. Just a reality check. The fact that Samsung do not respond to us is nothing short of a disgrace. As I have said.....we have paid £850-£900 for this phone. Samsung could tackle the problem. Shame on them.
Well damn, looks like you're right!
I was wondering why the alleged 2X shots looked noisy and lacked detail.
2X is essentially limited to brightly lit scenes and no more.
Pity because pro mode allows manual setting of ISO and exposure up to 10S.
I have a Note 9 and with the S-Pen a true bulb mode would be awesome!

Camera: Cant use wide angle lens with 40m resolution in camera settings.

This is with AI turned off:
When you choose to use the 40m resolution in camera setting, it removes the ability to use the 20m wideangle camera.
Example, if i want to take a wideangle photo, i have to go into settings, set the camera to 10m and then "zoom" out to get the 20m(!) wideangle camera.
How is this logic?
did you notice when swithcing to the 10mp setting and want to switch back tovthe 40mp setting, the settting isnt there anymore?!? you have to close the app and swioe away in multitask menu
It's probably because the wide angle lens is the 20mp camera. The main one is 40mp.

I know, that but thats not the issue here.
One more time:
When you have the main camera on 10mp you get the ability to change to the 20mb wide angle camera. Using the slider on the right side.
But when you have the main camera on 40mb, you are no longer able to change to the wide angle camera. I understand why zoom is removed but not the switch to the wide angle camera wich is another camera anyway
Why is that?
Because with 40mp you are limited to one lens and one sensor. 10mp option utilizes all lenses and sensors as they have 40,20 and 8 MP accordingly, so 10MO is an interpolated resolution.

But still, it should be a button to switch to make it easier. Or a wide angle option in the camera modes (night, portrait, pro, wide angle ect.)
Well, you have the button. It's called settings. Just leave it at default if you don't know how it works maybe ?

No need to be rude here. Good for you if you are happy with 10 mp, but for us who wants to use the full potensial of the camera are stuck with a 4-step operation just to make the wide angle work.
That just seem unnecessary.
if you want to use the "full potential" of the camera you would leave it at 10MP and not put it to 40MP.... that's called making use of all available pixels.....
besides you'd be better off asking Huawei tech support about it instead of shooting down everyone else's answers and opinions here.............
me.... i'm more annoyed by the fact that 1080p60 video recording is weirdly zoomed.......

Nobody is being rude. It's good to have a perspective. And you are not stuck at 4 step operation. Just leave it as is. You won't have 40mp wide angle as there in no 40mp sensor with wide angle lens, hope that is clear by now.

No. Full potential would be having the camera switch between the main 40mp lens, the 20mp wide angle and the 8mp zoom lens.
But the software does not give us this option unless you set the 40mp camera to 10 mp. Thats not making use of all available pixels.

I read it properly. And replied. When you use the 40 MP sensor you can use only 40MP sensor. Not wide angle, not zoom, but the main one. Hope that's understandable. When you choose 10MP resolution, you can use all three. Quite frankly for me. And most of the users. Just leave it. Really.

Look up "snide" in the dictionary and find your name there buddy (see how I used the emoji to deflect any hostile response there?)
40mp option is there for a reason. When you have plenty of light and don't need pixel-binning to get a clean image, 40mp gives you way more flexibility when editing. Just because some people don't know how to use their phones to take a great photo without all the software helping doesn't mean others can't.
P.S.: There's a whole thread where people complain about what's wrong with the phone (and the OS). This probably belongs there too.

Wow, what a response. Don't really understand what snide means do you? Emoji is there for a reason. The response was not hostile, but was given number of times, maybe the OP should post the problems in the thread you mention or report the issue to Huawei support? There is simply no solution for us to help the OP...
I'd rather have the max resolution for each lens in the camera to unleash the maximum quality of the taken picture... The Huawei Camera software is currently kinda stupid as it limits the potential to do any quick changes.

If you know what you're doing, you don't need to quickly change modes. Just manage your settings throughout the day.
what about tasker or some app that makes a shortcut to the 40 mp setting. with this it should be one press to swtich between the modes? someone tried that?
Lol long story short, to answer the op. 40 MP is a lot right. The isp can only handle so much data. When you're in normal 10mp mode the isp is still using data from the other 2 camera. For example. When you're in the dark and you zoom in it will not use the tele lens because it can see that the image isn't good enough. When you're using the full 40 MP there's simply not enough head room to sample any frames from the other camera. It's not a bug or an issue. It's just a limitation of the hardware

This is not about zooming.
Short: I just want to be able to switch to the 20 mp wide angle camera when I have 40mp in the main camera.
Just a button replacing "go into settings > resolution > change to 10 mp > exit resolution > exit setting > zoom(!?) out"
I have suggested to Huawei to at least add a "wide angle" option you can download in "more" menu.
If you agree, let Huawei know and hopefully we will see a update on this.

I think aperature mode reduces some of the over face softening and blemish removal. But it's still not as sharp as some phones like the Pixel. I think some places in the world prefer softer and lighter faces, so it's incorporated into the camera software. I'm awaiting replacement right now, so I can't check to see if its available under the front camera. It helped with the back camera for me.
Just looked, sadly there is no aperture under front camera. Is there any other way to reduce it? It is a software thing right?
And I tried to use portrait mode with selfie cam but there is no bokeh effect do I have to do something else?

I got this answer from other forum.
I am not sure you are talking about the fron or rear camera so i just assume you meant the fron one.
Go to portrait mode, there will be 3 buttons below, press the one on the bottom left and select the one after "None"; the round one.
Try taking photos after you adjust the settings above.

Hi! In view finder there is a option(looks like a box), you should enable it for bokeh mode.
If you use portrait mode, and really need the bokeh (which is far from perfect even on Pixel 3), then use Portrait mode, and just hold still when you take the shot. The phone will sharpen the photo if you hold the phone steady.
My selfies are sharper on the Mate 20 Pro than my Pixel 3 (Which I am going to sell as it's rubbish)
Also, remember the smart HDR can make the photo look overprocessed.
CHinese version is updated to 166 and reportedly to improve selfie. I'll wait if not I will sell it.

Note 20 camera modes: Macro?

Morning all
Of all the camera modes available, is Macro one of them?
I had the S20 Ultra and it was crap for anything close-up, so i switched back to the trusty Huawei.
I've always fancied a Note, and now the Note 20 is out, i can't justify the 20 Ultra's price tag, when the regular one will do what i need it to. Just wondering if Macro is one of the options, and if focussing is still an issue like the S20's had?
Look forward to your comments
Note 20 and 20 Ultra have ultrawide cameras without autofocus. Therefore macro is not an option. In my opinion this is a much bigger problem that the Note 20's plastic back (which actually looks pretty nice).
Actually, I've found the telephoto camera to have a very close focusing distance to make macro possible. Have you tried that?

Turn off the 64MP mode. You want 12 MP. It's better image quality too. The standard camera is the only one that does 64MP, which is probably why you aren't seeing the others, and with 12MP, the camera uses pixel binning to improve image quality and low light captures.

That was not the question Since the uw sensor has af, u can get close enough to your subject to use it like a macro lens and probably it is the best for close ups imo.
If you scene optimiser turned on then it will automatically switch to the wide angled lens the closer you get to object your trying to the macro shot of. That's macro mode for the s23.

Most of the phones use the "UW" lens for Macro shots since UW has a close focus capability. And there are no "true" macro lenses on any phone anyway. They just use some meme sensor + lens which has a close focusing capability.

Use PRO mode and use the ultra-wide-angle lens. That's the whole "macro" magic on the phones anyway.
In case S23U for "macro" photos device use wide lense with autofocus which compare to for example S22U wide lense don't have AF.
S23U in my opinion make good photos from close distance.
