Fingerprint reader and phone manufacture date - Samsung Galaxy S10 Guides, News, & Discussion

I know there are loads of threads regarding the fingerprint reader on the S10 family of devices but I want to park those discussions and instead do something of an investigative thread based solely on a guess based on my experience. So I pre-ordered the S10 and got mine when the first batch was sent out on 8th of March to customers. From memory, the phone was manufactured in February but can't remember the exact date. It was fine most of the time but the fingerprint reader was a bit hit and miss, working when it feels like it and deciding to take time off and going on vacation when it couldn't be bothered. The phone's SD Card reader when decided it couldn't be bothered working full time as well and switched to part time work: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s10/help/experienced-issues-microsd-card-t3917353
So as any sensible person would, I got a replacement for it which arrived 2 days ago. This device was manufactured 06/03/19. The fingerprint reader on it is absolutely spot on! Literally works every time either with the screen completely off or on and I'm not doing anything differently from when I had the first device. It even works well with wet finger & water on the screen over the FP reader as you can see here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zQfuA_l4O5uFDzxnkpLI3ZZ-jEC5S9LL/view?usp=sharing
What I'm proposing is for you to tell us the manufacture date of you device and if you're having trouble with the fingerprint reader so we can see if there is a link with the manufacture date of the devices that have a work-shy fingerprint reader and those that have one that do not mind full time work. You can use this program to get the manufacture date of your device: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vndnguyen.phoneinfo

Did your 2 phones come with pre installed screen protector?
Because its possible they have changed the screen protector somehow also.

Yes screen protector feels exactly the same but I have no way of knowing if it's different.

Mine was made feb 18 and its horrible, maybe works 40% of the time, if i wet my finger it actually works better.
I'm itching to take the screen protector off and see if it helps.

How are you guys getting a replacement? I wrote Samsung about it, since I experience issues with the fingerprint reader as well, also my S10 overheats in normal conditions and theres some kind of touch latency I noticed. Samsung told me, they would never replace a device and only "repair" it. So are you guys sure you are getting completely new and sealed phones?
Btw my s10 was manufactured on 29/01/2019

Yes new sealed device. UK consumer law means they have to replace it as the device was clearly faulty. I contacted my service provider who provided the device & explained what was happening and they arranged to doorstep exchange for the next day with the courier collecting the faulty device.

Hm there's no such law in Germany unfortunately. They clearly said they won't gonna replace the device.
Well, maybe the support have to say that...

Interesting. On here it says https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/shopping/guarantees-returns/germany/index_en.htm
Who has to prove the presence/absence of a defect and how long do they have to do this?
The seller must prove that the item was not defective for the first 6 months after the delivery of the product ("reversal of burden of proof"). After this time the consumer must prove that it was defective.

What remedies is the consumer entitled to free of charge? Is there a deadline for implementing the solution?
There is a "hierarchy of remedies":
Firstly, repair or replacement according to the consumer's wishes, within a reasonable time and free of charge
Secondly, refund or reduction of the purchase price if repair or replacement are not possible within a reasonable time frame.
What classes as a reasonable time frame may vary between cases. Therefore, when writing to the trader to ask for the legal guarantee to be applied, the consumer should agree on a deadline for remedy and inform the trader that if this deadline is not met, the consumer will cancel the contract or ask for a reduction in the purchase price.

Know your rights and don't let them fob you off. Ensure that you're speaking to the company that you bought the device from BTW so if it was not Samsung then ensure you are speaking to the vendor about replacing it.

Thanks for pointing this out mate, I really appreciate it! Didn't know that.
Both of them, my seller on eBay and Samsung, said that a replacement of the device is not possible.
So I sent my seller the EU clause now, to inform him about this.

It's German law as well so point that out. If they don't comply then you're able to take further action against the company. Make sure you ask for their manager's details and ask them to send you send you, in writing, under what legal statue they are refusing to replace the faulty handset with a new one.

Added. Cheers.

2019.02.03 works well under normal conditions if i cover the sensor correctly
but barely works if finger/screen is wet, i dont have another S10 to test whether this is normal or not, but i'm pretty sure it's suppose to work even when it's wet?

So they answered me the following:
"It is generally about point 4 - disproportionate costs that would be present in the case. You would demand a new device and return a used one (even if only a few weeks old). In this case I could only offer you to exchange a faultless device in the same condition, with the same age. With a new device we talk about a difference of about 100 Euro compared to a new or B-goods device. That would be disproportionately high costs, according to which for the purpose of subsequent performance only the removal of the lack remains as an option.
The shipping costs for sending the goods in would of course be refunded, there is no question about that.
There would also be the possibility that you send us the device (without packaging and accessories), I check the condition, and, if it shows no signs of use, exchange it for a device from customer returns."
I don't know if I should do this. Because how do I know the device from the customer return is working flawless?

Can confirmed that it should work even with wet finger. I've tested it right now with wet finger & water on the screen over the FP reader just to be sure again and you can see in this video how it worked: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zQfuA_l4O5uFDzxnkpLI3ZZ-jEC5S9LL/view?usp=sharing

Google/Samsung Repair Information

My Nexus 10 has light bleed, which seems to be common among the users here at XDA. It also has a "dim patch", and multi-touch doesn't work properly. So i've decided to have the device replaced/repaired.
I contacted Google 2 days ago and explained my situation, they said that the only options they would have would be a remorse return (i'm already out of my 15 day window), or replacement. As many of you know, in order to have a replacement done it is required for Google to place a ~$400 hold on your card associated with your Google Play account then a new device is sent. I don't have a credit card and I cannot have $400 tied up for 2+ weeks, so i'm not able to use that option either. At that time they directed me to Samsung for further assistance with a warranty repair. I don't have an issue sending the device in, so I call Samsung.
A Samsung rep stated that "we just make the thing, we don't provide any service" and directed me back to Google for assistance. I brought up the warranty information included in the box with the unit itself, and he quickly denied any ability to file a repair order for a Nexus tablet.
So I call Google...
The first rep indicated that ASUS is their "go-to" repair partner, and I should have contacted them. He agreed that Samsung made the tablet, as well as confirmed the prior information about the replacement policy. Amused, I called back and requested a Supervisor. The "Floor Supervisor" in that particular call center stated the following: "*sigh* We've been getting this all day long, sorry for any misinformation you were provided. The only option to have the Nexus 10 replaced or repaired under warranty is under our replacement. We will replace your tablet for the warranty period only, provided there is no physical damage to the device from the user. Samsung will not respond to any inquiries about the Nexus 10 tablet, and does not offer any services for warranty repair. Your only option is to replace it with Google. Do you have any further questions?"
I decided to call Samsung again, because I couldn't believe that was the case. Within 5 minutes I had an e-mail with shipping labels to have my device repaired. The agent was a nice guy, and apparently frequents XDA. We had a conversation about the tablet itself and the entire Nexus launch process, talked about specs and whatnot and disconnected the call.
At this point i'm annoyed and offended with the whole Google experience.
I've had a pretty good experience so far with getting my Nexus 10 replaced.
So my tablet stopped working completely a few days after getting the 4.2.1 OTA update (had the busted base firmware) so I called up the devices support on Google Play, explained the situation to the guy on the phone and he emailed me a form that told me what I needed to do. Used the provided link to organise a pickup time/location and used a special link to order a new tablet (with the money being held until it's verified as covered by warranty).
I have my new tablet with the old one being picked up last week. Hopefully it doesn't take long to verify the tablet broke from no fault of my own and they release my money. The only strange thing is the form for the device pickup was about the Nexus 7 so hopefully it gets to the right place (And if it doesn't then it's not my fault because the guy I talked to knew it was a Nexus 10 and and the special play store link was for a nexus 10).
On the other hand I've been trying to get a refund for my Samsung monitor for a few months and I haven't heard anything from them.

They said 1-2 weeks before the device is at my door. They emailed the shipping label to me also. I included a small note with a list of device issues, just in case.
Dropped it off this morning, I'll report back with return time frame and what condition I get it back in.
To Samsung's credit, once I found someone who was knowledgeable it's been pretty smooth, we'll see what happens. Has anyone else done a warranty service for this device yet?

Does this apply to the UK......
Please please let me know how this goes! I've yet to get a good one by Google but my original is the best of the lot. Everything other than the wonky notification light and screen are perfect and i don't want a worse one at the expense of the screen. If they just put a good panel in there it would totally be worth sending in for warranty work!

Sure, I have every intention of keeping this thread updated when I know something. As far as i'm aware and from what the employees at Samsung Support/Samsung Repair Center have said, this is one of the first (if not the first) warranty service requests processed for this device.
We'll see how it goes..
All of Samsung's standard service and support services apply. It's on their site as the GT-P8110.
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/GT-P8110HAEXAR
Waiting with baited breath on the return of your device man. Tomorrow is Tuesday... hopefully they send you some kind of tracking tomorrow so you know it's back for sure. Would be sad if they put the new panel in, fired it up, actually looked at it, found that they have a real problem with the screen tech they put in this thing and had to go through a few to get a good one! I'm more afraid that they just check to see if you have one that powers up, take a 2 second look at it and send it back. I would honestly live with very minor light bleed at 80-100% brightness and NO DIMMING BAND. The band is what is distracting to look at. I honestly cannot see my light bleed anymore, even when I look for it. It is only one spot, and only visible (barely) when I first power up at max brightness. It's that awful half inch dimming that runs the entire camera side of the device... the LONNNNG edge.
I regret that I did not take a before picture, but I'll know if it's repaired. I hope it is flawless, but it's not something I'm expecting. No update today, hopefully some news tomorrow.
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Well whatever their resolution... It will let me know the limitations of what they can repair. If my replacement sucks badly... Ill send that one back as well. If your repair nets you a near perfect repair then Ill just send the original in to them. As I've stated many times before, minimal light bleed under extreme conditions is OK for me... The dimming is not.

I completely agree. I don't really expect to have a flawless unit in terms of light bleed, but I'll admit that I am disappointed with the amount of bleed on some of the units we've seen.
Update on Samsung: According to the tracking system, the tech replaced the LCD panel and QC'd it, then two other individuals also signed off that it passes their QC. I plan to call today to see if anything else is being done, or if they plan to ship it soon. With the upcoming holiday, UPS may take require some extra time to get it here.

On one I returned the back cover had somehow become misaligned near the top where the snap on cover piece is, causing it to pop out occasionally.
Wonder if it might be something similar.

What is the support process for getting a device fixed.

I bought an Omate TrueSmart from a backer that didn't want it anymore and looks like the SimCard slot is not working. I tried emailing [email protected] as well as reach out to a contact the original owner had but no response as of yet. Any help would be appreciated.

Well the simcard is not being recognized but I think it's hardware since it supposed to let you take the sim card out via the "spring" motion but it just grabs it without letting me eject it. Otherwise it's fine but really useless outside of the house since I can only do wifi to use it as Bluetooth is not usable to tether to the phone to use it.
How did you put the SIM inside? Notch towards the unit, with chip face up to the screen?

followed the directions online. there is a video of the process. there is just no spring action. in that type of sim insert configuration there should be a way for it to come out when pressing. some phones i have seen that on. i guess there is nobody here from Omate to assist. i have emailed and no response.

Oh ok. I didn't have a user manual included when i purchased it. I got the watch in the original cased box with the pillow and the card signed by the CEO as well as the extra battery and screws. I can provide whatever you need as far as proof but I asked the original owner and he advised me he never put a sim in it. I also notice on the lower left corner there is lite leaking from under the sapphire glass.
If I have no hope of achieving any support for the device since I am not the original "kickstarter" backer then I will just sell it since I paid more then the bought it for sure.
thanks again for your quick reply Kuronosan

In that video, the sim is never shown correctly inserted into the TrueSmart. If it springs back out any, it was not pushed in far enough to latch. When fully inserted and latched, no part of the sim chip is still visible outside the slot. To get it out, push it even further in with a tool or fingernail and it will pop out to the point where is shown in Kurt's video and then can be tweezed or scraped out.
Having the sim inserted partially like in the video might work for some TrueSmarts, but it did not for mine. Once I got past that on my watch, my T-Mobile sim started functioning immediately and continued to do so without any issues.

I am sorry yours does not work right. I had hoped I could help since I had been a little misled myself, initially,by the video you linked to.
I got no similar light leaking, though there was a report with a photo of someone else who did, on the Omate forum that is now down I think. There was some speculation that such a light leakage might indicate that individual watch was not likely even vaguely water-resistant.
My only issue on my 1/8/1900 DevEd Nov watch is that it runs at a maximum of 1gHz instead of 1.3gHz. I have resisted testing the water-resistance and have not opened the back yet. I would like it to run at full rated speed, but have not initiated a warranty claim yet because I feel like the Omate folks do not yet have the resources to respond. I suspect that a lot of the watches in the early Feb USA shipment are running at 1gHz max.

Well i tried again this morning and still nothing. I think it's a hardware issue but my guess is that I am SOL as the only response i got today was an email with a PDF of the users guide. Money down the drain ..

You will need to take it apart. Kurt has a video of how to do maintenance.

Well i followed the steps so i can take my sim card out otherwise I would not be able to use my regular phone. The matter is still the issue with the sim card not working and now the lite leakage. Why is there no response from the company that is manufacturing these devices.
If someone tells me listen you were not the original backer so we can't assist you I will forget about contacting them anymore and would just write this off as a loss. It's a shame as it's a really nice device and I spent over $250 for it so it sucks that I am at a loss.
thanks,
Mike

They get hundreds of emails a day. With as small as their staff is, it's two maybe three people having to answer those emails, label and ship units as well as other duties.
As a point of comparison , when I worked as a warranty certified tech for Acer, it took 8-12hrs of sitting on hold just to get them to answer a phone call.
Question, does your SIM look like this when installed;
Orientation
Insertion
Installed

Touchscreen Issues Patched?

I have the Snapdragon factory unlocked US model. 2nd day of owning the device. I notice the phone has touchscreen issues since it will not register my taps right away. Does that issue get solved in the March 2018 software patch update? Or would I need to just return my device? No deadzones and it passed the secret menu test multiple times.

After 17 days of ownership (S9 plus) I had deadspots. After much effort to try to get a new replacement, Samsung offered warranty repair service, which would take 2 weeks. They suggested I might try a repair service in the Phoenix area called Ubreakifix. I brought the phone to them, they transferred the repair ticket to them and they repaired it in 3 hours. It's as good as new now (hopefully).
Ubreakifix confirmed that the touchscreen was defective. Definitely not a software issue.
I'm surprised that I'm not seeing more postings about this problem...

I am not getting dead spots like others, but my screen requires multiple touches to get stuff work. Is it true once you replace the screen, the phone's water resistance may not be as trust worthy?
My touchscreen is driving me insane. No deadspots but if my finger slides even the slightest bit when I tap the screen - it doesn't register. I have bad arthritis which must be aggravating the situation. I've tried everything I can think of with no help. I also have a new samsung tablet I have to use at work that behaves exactly the same way.
Out of curiosity do any of you have dry hands? Or very calloused fingers? I've experienced touch issues but on multiple devices and it seems more prevalent when my hands are dried out. When I moisturize them I get much better response from the touch screen

Some say it is a software issue and the Exynos patch solved it. I hope this is the case with the unlocked USA Snapdragon model once the patch comes out. I only have about 2 weeks to decide if I want to keep the device.

I just updated the Tab-E and it still does it. Not sure how old the update was though as it's a new tablet to me.

Haven't used a Samsung tablet in ages. I own an iPad myself, so I stay away from Android tablets. I only like Android phones haha. I have 14 days left to return the device, so the ball is in Samsung's court.

LCD panel bleeding light at the bottom chin

Can any one confirm if they are seeing a bleeding effect at the bottom of the phone lcd panel. Overall the lcd panel of this phone is really bad. Comparing it to my OP2 and the illumination of the panel is too low. Anybody else with the same issues? I have put up a pic of the issue. Updated images of comparison with OP2 (In each pic POCO F1 is the at the top and OP2 at the bottom.)
Update 10/09/2018
First up my apologies for being away for the past 3-4 days. I have been trying to solve the issues with the phone and then over the weekend was caught up in some personal stuff. I thought of updating my original post rather than putting up a new one as this whole thing has come to a conclusion for me. So just a small recap, I bought the phone on 29th AUG in the first flash sale. Received the phone on 31st AUG as soon as I started the phone I found the bottom chin had a weird illumination. After a few days as the issue persisted checked online and found that the LCD panel suffered from light bleeding issues. I just headed here and created this thread and put in a request on Flipkart for a replacement. After that here is what followed.
04.09.2018 - Return requested
05.09.2018 - Got a call from Flipkart that a Technician will visit to check the device and same will be completed by 08.09.2018
07.09.2018 - Technician visited my place and checked the phone, he accepted that there was an issue however he mentioned that it is difficult to observe and explain the issue to his seniors. He however took a pic of the problem so I was hopeful that a replacement would be provided.Late evening I got a SMS that tech visit was completed, I checked the Flipkart app and it said Replaced Rejected. WTF!!!! There was Return option so selected that and the reason I selected was quality issues with product. Was surprised to see that refund request was accepted and someone would pick the package the next day.
08.09.2018 - Courier guy came to pick the package. Since I have kept the back stickers with the bar code and stuff I had just everything back as I had received it. The courier dude was acting smart and since I had already left for work he tried bullying my Mom saying the phone is not working asking what the issue was, me Mum just asked him to shut up check the package had everything and take it like he is supposed to. After checking everything and making sure all accessories are there the courier person took the package. I got a message that package was picked and refund initiated and credit will show up in my account in 3 business days.
10.09.2018 - Credit received :victory:
Regarding the Issue
First - This is not a fatal issue and as far as I know LCD bleeding does not increase with time however this is a hardware issue so if you are holding on thinking some software update is going to fix this, then sorry you are wrong.
Second - I don't agree with the "you get what you pay for" argument simply because everyone is paying the same amount of money but having different experience (We can see from pics posted by users that for some the problem is obvious and for some it is minimal and hardly noticeable)
Third - If you have this issue and it doesn't bother you then I would say go ahead and enjoy the phone. If you noticed this after checking this thread then I am sorry
Fourth - I would strongly recommend that people buy this phone taking Replacement/Refund policies of the merchant that is selling the phone into consideration. Guys that have purchased this from Mi website directly and want a replacement are having a tough time and am not sure if Mi website even has a refund policy. For Indian users get this from Flipkart and not Mi website, for other countries make sure Replacement/Refunds are provided in case you want to avail the same.
Final Thoughts -
I though the POCO F1 had great potential to take over from OnePlus as a budget flagship alternative however they messed up. If the POCO team had spent a little more time and may be resources on QA ,Software optimization (bugs in MIUI, bad implementation of curved corners, multi touch issues, etc) and may be a better name {POCO I mean seriously!!! } this phone would have been a serious contender.
Conclusion
I would like to thank everybody that participated in this thread and responded with pics for a comparison. Since I don't have the phone anymore I don't think it would be right for me to post here anymore. I just put a new battery in my OP2 so going to wait for some time and see what the Pixel's gonna be like or the OP6T maybe.
Looks fine to me on my POCO F1.
Yes buddy, I have it too... I verified with 2 other poco f1's

This is so screwed up. I bought the phone coz I liked the Redmi Note 5 Pro I got for my dad. Poco screen looks bad when comparing side by side with Redme Note 5 Pro. Even brightness levels are horrible on Poco screen looks really dim at the same level as RN 5 Pro.

Well that just sucks. When did you get the replacement? I raised a request on the 5th of Sept coz I felt maybe a diff lot may not have the issue. Its funny coz some units dont have this issue (like the one posted here). I guess its like 6 out of 10 are reporting this.

All the best for your refund mate hope they process it without hassels. The pblm with this issue is that some people just say it looks okay. Best way to reproduce is to open Chrome blank page and press and hold Power off button till the power off options come up and check the bottom if it shows a halo effect.
Let us know how the refund goes it should help others in making a decision. Curious thing is not a lot of people complaining about this like the boot loader issue.

I guess you are opening chrome in "Incognito" mode. The effect is visible on white backgrounds I guess if you just download a white image in full screen it should show up as well. Have no info on the service mode however some one having this issue posted on twitter regarding a display test you can do.

P.S. I went back to my old device so I havent tried the steps mentioned in the tweet.
could you please explain about the issue, i'm not understanding the problem... I mean I do see a bit white color in power options screen but I don't understand the issue with this.

A bit of inconsistent brightness levels are expected with LCD panels however with the POCO F1 quite a few people are facing LCD bleed that is very notice able. If the inconsistency is minimal and some thing you can live with then its alright. For me it has been bothering me from day one as soon as I switched the phone on. I mainly use my phone for watching videos and the effect sometimes is more pronounced and that bothers me hence I have asked for a replacement.

Question Am I the only one who things the FP recognition has got worse since Dec update?

I eagerly installed the Dec 2021 update on my Pixel 6 a couple of weeks back - hoping to improve the FP pass rate.
But I am convinced its gotten worse.
It seemed better at first - but soon deteriorated...
Since the update, whilst it still unlocks on the 1st attempt occasionally, I am finding far more instances where it completely fails to recognise my FP and I am forced to put my PIN number in to unlock.
Prior to the update, it would unlock more often on the 1st attempt - otherwise it may have taken 2-3 attempts to unlock and very rarely I would have to enter the PIN.
Same here! adding more of the same finger did not help!
It was better or about the same from 13/12 until 25/12, and now I hardly can use it. have to enter password all the time.

I am not sure where you are located geographically, but in the northern hemisphere it is now winter. As such the overall humidity levels (particularly indoors) tends to be very low and skin is drier. What you may be seeing is your skin seasonally drying out - and the P6 is terrible at reading dry fingerprints.

I had a feeling about this - but never had the same issue with my previous OnePlus phones with screen based FP reader.
Also, the back sensor on cheap Oppo phone or basic Nord N100 work fine - unlock first time...

Just curious, why no one found any help there....

I think his point was that there are a half dozen FPR threads already and another is not really needed. Why not find an older one and update that? Wouldn't that make more sense?
Worst FPR ever put on a phone
Ok this is beyond a joke now. Why in the hell would these morons remove face unlock only to add the absolute worst fingerprint reader I've ever dealt with on any phone I've ever owned. I never thought I'd consider going back to pin unlock...

I did the steps people have said to do like increase touch sensitivity and re add all the fingers I would use but it still won't work. I don't know who made this protector since I got it off a marketplace site and when I met with the person all...

As you will note, I mentioned that multiple OnePlus phones with screen based sensors worked fine for me.
I am also aware that back sensors use different tech - the point was that cheapo bottom of the range phones have no problems with fingerprints - so why does my £600 phone not work as well. It's not good enough.

Seriously don't understand the problem, I create a thread with a very specific question and suddenly I am took to task for it...woah....
No problem in the fingerprint department for me since Dec update. It is almost perfect now. Very rare to get failed reads.

I would love to - but its been over 2 months since I ordered it. I foolishly hoped that Google would fix it ASAP - and the 1st attempt has been less than satisfactory...Wish I had returned it within the 30 days...
There seems to be some hope of a workaround... Fingerprint Reader tip
