Pixel 3 XL Daydream Screen Way Too Dim - Google Daydream VR

I'm cross-posting a thread that I started on google-vr github issues and r/daydream (sorry no links, but title is the same), since nobody seems to be able to help in those places:
Has anyone else seen how dim the Pixel 3 XL screen is when in VR mode using "reduce flicker" display mode (no low-persistence)? This is a big problem for our project, since I am a (novice-intermediate) android developer and professional scientist making eye testing apps for ophthalmology applications.
I was able to measure only 20-30 lux coming off a full white texture. In "reduce blur" mode the same texture gives about 80 lux, which is barely acceptable, but we cannot use this mode since the flicker itself messes with our tests. The normal Daydream launcher app looks quite dim as well. We've tested two brand new identical Pixel 3 XL phones and they both are that dim in VR mode only. When we were using the Pixel 2 XL on Oreo, we could get close to the full 500 lux in "reduce flicker" VR mode.
We'd prefer at least 100 lux for normal stimuli, but there is no (obvious) way to adjust brightness! I've even looked in to changing the hidden setting "screen_brightness_for_vr" but did not see any effects - Google VR services seems to ignore this setting. Any hack would do at this point, honestly. We can root the phone and even do a custom ROM if necessary. On the regular Pixel 3, my coworker gets over 200 lux for this texture and display mode. This has to be a mistake, right? We filed a github issue, but apparently no new issues have had a reply for over two weeks now. We are contemplating returning the phones to the Google store since they are practically useless for our purposes.
Anyway, thanks in advance for any insights that the community can provide.

Disappointed with the "superior" sAMOLED panel on the Note 7

I will openly admit that as a fan of AMOLED displays, I love the "oversaturated" colors and "better than life" images they facilitate. Of course there are people who prefer LCDs and people who are color-accuracy purists, and I respect their differing preferences. With that said, I want to offer some comments about the Galaxy Note 7's display, and see if other people are having the same thoughts. For reference, mine arrived on Tuesday of this week so I've had it for roughly two days now.
The sAMOLED panel on the phone, or at least the phone I have, is a horrid disappointment. The first thing I do when getting a new Samsung phone (which for various reasons is basically every time a new one releases) is turn the Display Mode to "AMOLED Cinema". Until the Note 7, it had been the most intense, color saturated setting option. With the Note 7, it looks awful. The colors are washed out and "dull" to the point where I almost wondered if there is a calibration issue. Oddly, the Automatic mode seems to be the only way to get colors remotely saturated to the point of which I prefer.
Along with the Note 7, I am currently using a Nexus 6P. The display on the 6P is, for my personal preferences, far better than that on the Note 7. I have the same wallpaper on both, the same icon set up, and yet the 6P's colors look way more intense.
Has anyone else noticed this? In particular, people who have owned the Galaxy S7 Edge, the Galaxy Note 5, and the Galaxy S6 Edge+? Could it be that my device has a problem with the panel?
I used the S7 Edge for about 4 months and at no point did it have the color "problems" that I am experiencing with the Note 7. Mind you the smaller, standard Galaxy S7 looked more vibrant, but this was attributed to the display being that much smaller.
Yes, I get the idea that Samsung is trying to make the displays more color accurate and whatnot, but in all honesty, should the ultimate goal be to make them as close to LCD color calibration as possible? Is that what people would want?
If this is where Samsung is going with future products, I must admit I'm not happy at all. Part of the reason I like the Galaxy series has always been their super saturated situation. The Note 7 is now the first product where I have, from the very first minutes with the phone, been unhappy with the display.
Any thoughts?

I also heard about this lowered saturation on a YouTube review video recently, so it looks like Samsung has responded to the stupid complaints about the over saturation. I am on your side here as I love the over saturation, it is fundamentally why I go for Samsung phones overall. Those that complain are too dumb or too lazy to go and change the levels in settings. So Samsung has helped quell the moaners.
I am waiting for mine to arrive on Tuesday and I will report back here. I hope it isn't too noticeable as I will be bitterly disappointed.

I am in the 'other' camp and much prefer a more natural picture, close to SRGB. Even then I use SCREEN BALANCE (app store) to very slightly change screen tint to a more blue'ish hue to get white whites.
My gf has a 3 series samsung and the colours are imho truly awful with their over emphasised vibrancy.

I think the S3 is not the best phone to compare it to. Back then the displays were really off balance. But I respect your preference for a more natural look but surely we need the options for either. Can the SCREEN BALANCE app you mentioned be used to saturate the colours at all? And does it interfere with the screen overlay issue when setting permissions for other apps?

I suspect you will be disappointed. I am literally, at this point, going back to the Nexus 6P constantly for web browsing and YouTube.
You are insane. Yes, Samsung changed the screen modes for the BETTER.
Basic = sRGB = most consumer content.
Photo = Adobe RGB = pro photos
Cinema = DCI-P3 = film making standard
Adaptive = oversaturated, cold white point that some people like yourself prefer.
Cinema used to be the oversaturated setting. Now it is adaptive display. If that isn't saturated enough for you, get your eyes checked dude. Beyond that point, you are absllutely making everything completely unrealistic. I don't like "washed out" aka accurate colors either, but I don't like colors that destroy the image. The 6P out of the box is too saturated. I have to tone that down slightly to match the Cinema mode from Samsung.
And people... STOP SAYING LCDS ARE FOR COLOR ELITISTS AND OLED IS OVERSATURATED. That is a crock of ****. The only reason Samsung made their first OLEDs oversaturated were to get people's attention. When using a calibrated setting, OLED is superior to LCD in EVERY WAY. Infinite contrast is A HUGE factor for image quality. LCDs suck. Period. The only advantage they have is brightness in TVs, which could change as tech matures (but Samsung has brighter OLED phone panels than any LCD competitor), and producing a deeper red color with quantum dot. That's it.
This is absolutely the best phone display ever made. Period.
Seems like people can find something to complain about. Now if someone has a truly faulty display, then that is reasonable to gripe about. But I can say my N7 has BY FAR the best display of any mobile device I have ever owned (Owned note's for 4 years now). This display is light years better than what my N4 has. The whites are far whiter, the colors are far better. It is saturated perfectly (I am using adaptive) and the brightness is awesome. The N7's display has already been shown to be by far the best display on any mobile device to date, and by a fairly wide margin in many of the different testing criteria. IDK what to say to someone who actually doesn't like the N7's display. Except maybe you have a faulty display. Each to their own, but it is pretty clear cut after extensive testing by displaymate (I think that's the site) that the N7 has the worlds best smartphone display. Second best was the S7 edge. I will say that I am not overly fond of the curved edges, but that would be my only gripe and has nothing to do with the actual display/brightness/colors/sharpness etc.

I noticed this the other day when comparing to my note 4 watching 4k videos. Videos were a little washed out and it didn't pop on my note 7. Details and contrast were missing. So I start looking in to the settings and in the Advanced features I find "Video enhancer" all the way on the bottom. I saw that it was ON and it makes the sample image brighter. OFF caused it to get darker. So I decided to turn it off and watched the same 4k video. Now my note 7 is exactly like my note 4. Colors popped, more contrast, more details. I assume because turning it off did not allow darker colors to get brighter and blended less with lighter colors of the same shade? Anyway, try it out yourself when you get your phone. I am leaving this setting off.

I agree about it being the best display. I absolutely have ZERO complaints about the colors. I recently upgraded from the Galaxy S5, and lets just say... the difference is mind-blowing. However, this boils down to preference, and there's nothing wrong with the OP's wish for more saturation, as that is just what he prefers. However, I find the most saturation comes with Adaptive Display also, while Cinema Mode seems a tad more dull. The difference in modes is hardly even noticeable though. To the OP: Just roll with adaptive, my friend.

Well, I don't know if "insane" is the proper word though. People have different preferences. I'd be willing to bet that a wide segment of the general population would also agree with me, and probably associate AMOLED with those exact "over the top" colors as some allege. Indeed it comes down to personal preference. Like how for some they simply can't use a point-and-shoot camera because the images are "terrible" but for the masses they would never notice most of the minutia of detail differences between a DSLR and point-and-shoot upon a quick glance.
Indeed I keep going back to the 6P now because the colors are so much more saturated. Which is ironic because when it launched last year IIRC, I felt it was too "subdued".
As for the generalization, I think it's become that way because many of the LCD-enthusiasts use that as their mantra. It's better because of X,Y,Z, basically the points you raised above. Perhaps when AMOLED becomes more common people will start to be more aware of the details and whatnot.

For me at least, the display saturation has been one of the primary reasons I will come back to Samsung. For example I loved the LG V10 last year but ended up getting rid of it in favor of another Galaxy S6 Edge+ simply because of the color situation.
I don't think the display on mine is faulty, just that I'm not so happy with the changes Samsung has made to its display setting profiles. As for the Display Mate issue, I've heard about it for a relative while now, but at least from my personal preferences it's a strike against the phone. It would be interesting to see what a large segment of Note 7 users feel about the display, though I'm willing to bet that (1) 99% don't even know you can change the display settings, and (2) the phone is already set to Adaptive thus people won't even be aware to begin with.
Just as a side note, I found the Sony Xperia X to have a stunning display in terms of color saturation. They have calibrated it almost to the point of being an "old school" sAMOLED.

I understand what you are saying. I do not disagree with you that the display has been praised highly by the likes of Display Mate, I don't even dispute that this is the best display ever on any phone. I welcome the better whites and brightness and all that you point out and I also despair at some of the negativity posted on XDA about the Note 7 in general.
But I can't help the fact that I love over saturated colours on a phone (not necessarily for photo's and videos but certainly the UI) and up until now this has been a predominant feature of AMOLED. What I am complaining about is that the option to have a natural look or a vivid look that has always been a built into the settings for the display are no longer adequate. From what I gather, the CINEMA mode which was always the most vivid, makes little difference now. How hard would it be to allow users more control over saturation? The issue therefore is not with the display, but the software settings.
If as you say the ADAPTIVE mode is sufficient then I will be happy with that. Until I get my phone I won't know for sure.

I guess you could. Why not try it?
Yes it works by way of screen overlays. Certain application, like my mobile banking app require SB to be switched off. No biggie.
It may be of interest to you that NOUGAT has built in colour sliders and white balance adjustments which work at root level. Well at least the development version had it. Whether this makes it into the final version is another question. I can imagine that some manufacturers which have spent some effort to get their displays calibrated as close as poss to approved standards may object to see their work compromised that way.
We have to see.
I think nougat has been rolled out on Nexus so may be worth looking there too.

An excellent point: why doesn't Samsung allow manual tinkering of the color saturation? Why not add a "Custom" mode? It has one for the music equalizer for example.
Rival products such as Asus hardware (though the Zenfone 3 crashed every time I tried) and even the BlackBerry Priv have manual color saturation sliders. If Samsung is so interested in changing the settings to inevitably upset any number of people, why not also have an option to tailor the display to the user's liking?

In theory you are correct about that but if you put maybe 5 note 7's side by side and set them all with the same color mode. probably 4 out of the 5 devices will have different color temperatures and saturation.

Yes, there is a margin of difference in each screen - no calibration setting is likely to produce the same result in a different screen. But unless Display Mate received a cherry picked device, or got extremely lucky, their testing shows these color modes are very accurate.

That is a great point and something that really should have been incorporated. OEMs are hesitant to allow users to customize things, which is stupid... Samsung wants locked bootloaders. Apple locks damn near everything down. I think the reasoning behind this is because most people don't have a damn clue what they're doing, and it would lead to devices with really bad configurations either by accident or by ignorance. The owner would think something is wrong with their device, other people would see this and think poorly of that OEM, there'd be improper repair/warranty claims attempted, etc.

One. You're pitting your subjective preferences against a PhD holding expert that tested the display using a battery of standardized tests using sophisticated equipment.
Absolute Color Accuracy for Each of the Screen Modes
For each of the Screen Modes we carefully measure the Absolute Color Accuracy using an advanced series of spectroradiometer measurements with 41 Reference Colors that provide a detailed map of the Color Accuracy throughout the entire Color Gamut for each Screen Mode.
Absolute Color Accuracy is measured in terms of Just Noticeable Color Differences, JNCD. See this Figure for an explanation and visual definition of JNCD and the detailed Color Accuracy Plots showing the measured Color Errors for the 41 Reference Colors for each Color Gamut. For all of the calibrated Screen Modes, the Galaxy Note7 has uniformly Very Good to Excellent Absolute Color Accuracy. See our detailed Absolute Color Accuracy Plots with 41 Reference Colors for the 3 calibrated screen Modes and also this regarding Bogus Color Accuracy Measurements.

Wait a sec I think you might have misread or misinterpreted my original comments. I never claimed the display was in any way inaccurate, in fact IIRC a point was even raised about my having seen the analysis reports and such. My comment was purely a subjective one, that I don't like the new calibration in light of a personal preference towards truer-than-life color reproduction on a display. My asking for comments was not to challenge the accuracy of reports stating the Note 7 is properly calibrated, rather it was just to reach out and see if anyone also preferred the "old style" color tendencies.
IIRC someone in this topic mentioned about how Samsung might not want users to play with the calibration settings (thus no manual control) as it would potentially lead to creating a bad impression for anyone who saw any given user's device and didn't like the color reproduction. But I would argue that this is the inherent problem of Android, and OEM skins to boot. Just looking at some of the people here in Japan, and the phone(s) they are using with absolutely grotesque levels of carrier bloatware and skins (NTT docomo is by far the worst), I often feel Android is being misrepresented both to the user and to the market itself.
Many times people have said how "my phone is so slow" or "I don't like all these apps on it" and I've tried to explain how that's entirely the result of (1) the Docomo skin, or (2) the fact that it's a carrier model. Now adays more people are starting to at least know OF factory unlocked products though actually buying them is another issue entirely. I'd wager anyone not actively interested in tech around the world really has no interest in spending the better part of 1K on a top-end flagship sold factory unlocked. Thus people take what they can get for as low as they can get it for.
Anyway, going back to the original topic of the display, Samsung really shouldn't worry about how users might "sully" the beauty of AMOLED given that carriers already do enough to cause even the best phone(s) to be "broken" and that shapes someone's impressions just as much.
Now I actually have the Note 7 my anxiety over the colour saturation and screen modes has been eradicated! The display does not disappoint in any way and adaptive mode is surprisingly. . perfect!
I notice the difference between my Note 7 and my Galaxy Tab S, they look different but the Note 7 is equally good.

tokyoguy, Really, I dont know what device you are talking about, or got yourself a really, really defective one, my screen is the best I have ever had, I hat 4 other samsung models, 2 sony, etc, this one the note7 is the best for me

How much does the screen uniformity issue affect night mode e-book reading?

Reading e-books in night mode (dark brownish background and yellowish font) is the only situation where low light performance of the screen is critical to me. The QHD screen on the Note 4 performs admirably in this regard. The brightness I use is around 5%.
I'm worried the P-OLED might blur the font edges and give them a grainy look, effectively negating the benefits of a higher resolution screen over 1080p. I would not wish for any extra strain on the eyes; I tend to read every night in bed.
Any night-time e-book readers that own the V30 out there?

Asking for other e-book readers experience is smart, but be aware your "5%" on the Samsung Note 4 may be much different on other phones.
What is your "5%" in lumens? Give us a real number. Each OLED OEM sets a different minimum brightness level. Saying you like 5% on Samsung Note 4 is useless. That might be 20% or 25% brightness of the LG V30...
That's what Google did for the 2017 Pixel 2 XL -- even though they use the same LG display as the V30 Google set a much higher minimum brightness level. 5% of the Pixel 2 XL is 25%, 30% of the V30. LG lets their display get MUCH darker.
Here, go read this and look and side by side pictures.

Yes, I am aware 5 % on the Note 4 is not the same on the V30. I just mentioned it in passing, could just as well have said I keep the screen on "almost as dark as it gets".
I think a further question is, are the display issues less noticeable on dark brown/blackish background vs. the grey most comparisons use as the example?
I keep the background not-quite-black and font not-quite-white (in ither words: yellowish), because it's easier on the eyes than the contrast of simple black and white.

Pixel 3 / 3XL Screens are NOT equal

I'm not trying to start a pixel flame war, but I'm standing in front of multiple pixel 3 devices and it's very easy to see they have two different color temperatures. The difference isn't as noticeable in photos though.
Granted, they still look 2 times better than last year, but the regular 3 clearly has a warmer temp and greater color shift when viewed off axis.
How did a room full of tech experts miss this at the Google event?!
so whats your point?
It's possible it was just those 2 devices. Not every display is exactly the same, even on same phones.
I am curious is if you checked to see if the brightness levels were the same?

It was consistent on the multiple devices they had on display.
I also checked display brightness and color settings as you can see in the pictures. Like I said, the difference is more obvious in person and I'm shocked no tech reviewers have mentioned it. I've even noticed it while watching YouTube videos with reviewers holding the devices side by side.
Interesting

I noticed it too and tweeted about it hoping to get an answer from Jonathan Morrison. No reply from him so came here searching.
Check that pic in my tweet. This is a screenshot taken from YouTube video.

That's the same video that caught my eye. Matthew Moniz has a video about the notch that shows both phones with two different temperatures as well. He doesn't mention it either. I am hoping Erica Griffin does a test on it, but she topically only buys the larger version...
Coming from the 2 XL, my main concern is that it's better than that panel. If it is, then I'm happy.
To me, that notch is still enough to make me avoid the 3 XL even if it has slight better color temperature. There's always gonna be something better, bright, whiter, whatever. I'm looking at the overall package at this point in the game and the regular 3 is the better compromise for me.
I went to the Verizon store today and also noticed a difference in the color temperature of the displays. But I could've sworn the XL had the warmer panel. I'm sure there a ton of variability between screens even among the same model especially so soon after release. Not a big deal but I liked the XL screen a bit better especially when watching media. To my eyes the difference between 1080 and 1440 is noticeable. The regular 3 screen is also much smaller than I thought it would be. I figured it'd be pretty close to my Samsung Galaxy S8 but it's a good deal smaller. So I cancelled my Pixel 3 pre-order and went for the XL.

Yes, the display on both models is considerably better than the pixel 2 series. I wonder if anyone could compare them to the OG pixels? I loved their screens.
I watch a lot of videos on the net and I realize as the screen of Google pixel 3 to a pink tint ??
I cancelled Pixel 3 and ordered Pixel 3 XL.
Hi, I really hesitate between the two versions now.
I took a fairly janky photo the other day at the Verizon store and the screens looked identical. Both phones in max brightness, adaptive color setting. They looked identical (that's why I took the photo). Unfortunately I couldn't move then from their secure displays, and actually was quite a bit off center for the pixel 3 because another customer wanted to spend 30 minutes with then like I was . The demo models had a purple-and-yellow gradient background image on them, which also looked identical on each phone. I couldn't actually handheld the devices at the time, though, so it's hard to get a good comparison, but the screens looked really great regardless. I'm not worried in the slightest at this point. We'll see if the internet starts up a new conspiracy about screen issues, though.
I looked at the 3/3Xl side by side in 2 different stores yesterday. The smaller one is definitely warmer .. looks more saturated.
Made sure both were at 100 % brightness. No adaptive brightness. Adaptive display color more on both.
Both looked very nice compared to my 2XL.. but the smaller one did look like it had its saturation turned to 11.

My concern is that the whites are just not as white on the regular pixel 3 and it will effect how we perceive the image quality of the photos we take. I make quick edits on my phone using Snapseed all the time, and I don't want it to look different than what I expect.
Well as mentioned in another thread here (the iFixit teardown), the smaller's display is LG while the XL is Samsung.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+3+Teardown/113763
Bummer... time to wait for more reviews to see differences.
I just received my Pixel 3 and compared it to my 2XL, and I'm so glad I did because I was ready to jump the gun and assume it was a horrible display as soon as I found out it was made by LG. I don't know how it personally compares to the Pixel XL 3, but the Pixel 3's screen is just flat out better when compared to my Pixel 2XL. The viewing angles are vastly better. There isn't a huge color shift when tilted. The colors seem significantly more vibrant. There seems to be less black crush (not perfect).
I was really considering returning my Pixel 3 until I compared the display to my Pixel 2XL. Man, I am glad I did, because I often found that my 2 XL with a case+whitedome screen protector were way too heavy and nearly impossible to use one handed. To be fair, I also prefer smaller phones. I would've bought the Pixel 2 instead of the 2XL if they had just maintained the same design. And I definitely loved my og Pixel over the og Pixel XL.
A small update -
I visited a Verizon store yesterday, and it does seem that the screens are different in temperature. The 3 had a bit cooler temp than the 3XL, but they both looked amazing. I set them both on the 3 color modes and they were a tiny bit different than one another, but again they are both really nice and look calibrated well.
I'm still on LG G4, which has an amazing screen (LCD though), and the two pixels are amazing, compared.

Overall love

Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Realme X2 Pro, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Realme X2 Pro is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Wasted opportunity
I have a bug. I put animations to 0 but after a while they come back to 10.. It is so annoying
Another bug, the dark mode deactivate itself and no disturbing mode doesn't work for some reason, I still receive audio notifications. Tha animation speed is not always the same, that means we have a beta software?
All good, worth buying phone.
Fantastic phone 12 gb 256 rom.The best value for money deal.
Hardware is good, but bad software and open source support.
No open source support means this phone will not have roms.
Now the BL still cause the fingerprint broken, that is bad.
I'm pee going from Galaxy note 8 to realme X2 pro second, you make better photos or at least like 8 notes
Require a lot of software work, realme has a very good camera but to make the same software like Samsung or apple... It is milion miles away..
I simply love this phone. I never though that it's that awesome!
I love this phone, i have 8/128 blu eu (paid 369 eur), no problem, very simple to change font (i am mad about Google Sans), good camera, very smooth, charge is simply unbelivable. So, for its price is super.

In stock on ebay Realme Store, i combined Realme coupon with ebay one
Experiences with Realme X2 Pro
I’ve used the X2 Pro now for 1 1/2 weeks (but only parallel to my old Moto G4 Plus, yet) and this are my experiences:
First Impression:
This is a heavy phone! (Not compared to other current similar phones but compared to earlier phones.) I thought 30g or 40g won’t make a difference but indeed they do. I prefer the lighter Moto G4 Plus, especially if I have to hold it for some longer times.
Software appears a bit chaotic/overwhelming. Even if there actually aren’t so many Realme apps, I felt like “So many apps and functions.” “Why does this system setting requires permissions to open it. I want to open settings (especially settings I don’t know about) without granting any permissions. … Oh OK, it’s not a normal setting but an additional app.” “This menu looks a bit clunky, I don’t know why.” But it's not as bad as some people tell.
I don’t like these shiny backside design so much but it looks better than expected.
The charging is really fast (but no surprise as I’ve seen and read many tests and it was one of the main reasons to buy these).
It works like expected. Apparently the development and innovations have slowed down. But the new features (fast charge, multi cam) are nice.
I like:
SuperVOOC fast charging. It’s really useful and stunning.
Internet Connection Control: It’s possible to decline network access (wifi and mobile separate) for apps. So no need for a separate firewall app anymore.
Personal Information Protection: I like to prohibit access to contacts for WhatsApp and other prying apps. It’s useful to comply with GDPR and other data privacy laws.
No thermal throttling experienced. (I only tested it really superficially.)
GPS seems to work really fast and accurate.
I don’t like:
I still don’t like glass backsides.
They are heavy, they are way too fragile. I don’t get why every YouTuber/Tester a few years ago asked for more “high-grade” materials like glass. In the end everyone has to further bulk up these big phones with protective cases/bumpers and don’t even feel the original materials.
Sound quality of the speakers is worse than the sound quality of the much cheaper and older Moto G4 Plus. It’s equally loud but the lower frequencies / bass tones are missing a bit and it sounds a bit “thin”. Really stupid to be stingy on such cheap parts.
Sound quality of microphone sounds a bit tinny and misses bass tones. In video recordings the sound tend’s to be a bit quiet. Even though it was quite loud when tested with a voice recording app.
SIP telephony (Session Initiation Protocol) missing in dialer/caller app & system settings:
It would be nice if SIP telephony would be integrated in the system so that we don't need any separate app. I already found hidden SIP account settings in the system settings. And after I enter my account data and SIP server data, the phone even registers/connects to the server. But unfortunately incoming calls aren't displayed/signaled at all and outgoing calls aren't possible with the stock caller app.
Timer in the Clock App:
Not possible to set more than 2 timers at once.
The timer alarm stops too early. I'd prefer if the timer rings for about 5 minutes or so.
I really don't like the timer sound. And I haven't found any setting to change it, yet.
I really would want to see running timers (at least the one which is going off next) on the lock screen and in the notification center.
Camera produces oversaturated videos and photos. I would prefer a slightly more neutral image.
I had temporal problems with Bluetooth:
I wanted to connect my Sennheiser HD 4.40BT headphones but it wasn’t possible. I just could not see the headset in the Bluetooth device list. I tried it several times. I even found Bluetooth protocol settings in the developer system settings and tried to change them a bit, but it didn’t help and so I changed it back to default. On the next day without doing anything special I finally saw the HD 4.40BT in the list and was able to connect to them. With my Moto G4+ it was just: turning headphones on, enabling BT on G4+, finding them, connect, done – within seconds. I don’t know what’s the problem here with the X2 Pro, especially since it works now.
Another strange thing I experienced while trying to find my Bluetooth headphones in the list: Almost every Bluetooth device is only displayed with its Bluetooth MAC address instead of its name. I mean, I don’t know all these other devices (I was on the go when I tried it first and it probably were headphones, smartphones, etc. from other people). So maybe a few of these unknown devices just didn’t had any name; But I assume at least a few of them had names. But at the other hand the X2 Pro finds more BT devices than the Moto G4+ so who knows.
Additional whishes:
Internet Connection Control option for each app should be included in App Info (next to permission). Maybe also Personal Information Protection, Game Space Settings and so on could be integrated in App Info.
I’d like to have a wider (higher) on screen navigation button bar. (I prefer buttons over the gestures, but with this large display even the bottom border is a bit uncomfortable to reach.)
Easy & discreet locking (e.g. double tap, long pressed back button,...):
It's a feature I only miss because I had a smartphone with physical fingerprint sensor on the front before, which could also be used to lock the phone (like pressing the power button). It was convenient to lock the phone when it lays on the table with just one slight one finger press, without grabbing the phone, without using gestures, no matter which app or whatever is open. It would be great if Realme could include any solution on system level. The app (icon) to fast lock the phone was a nice little idea but maybe there could be an even better option to achieve this.
Neutral things (decent, but could be better):
Battery capacity is OK:
I easily get through the whole day and night. But in my experience smartphone batteries lose significant capacity over 1 or 2 years and it would be nice to have still enough capacity after 2-3 years.
Display performance in general OK:
Minimum brightness is good. Maximum brightness seems to be good, too. Color accuracy seem to be average.
Display has a greenish tint (easily visible with low brightness, harder to see but still there with high brightness; DC dimming and warm/cold color temperature setting doesn’t make a difference here).
90 Hz actually looks a bit more smooth than 60 Hz and it looks more smooth than Moto 4G+ (60 Hz). But Realme X2 Pro on 60 Hz feels more choppy/laggy/unsmooth than Moto G4+ with its 60 Hz. I just use 90 Hz.
Under consistent heavy load (long time benchmarking) the phone gets really hot. But I haven’t experienced any hot parts during casual gaming or during normal usage.
The caller/dialer app has a blacklist but blocked calls are redirected to the mailbox. I would prefer them to be declined or ignored.
In general the camera is decent.
The app UI is quite self-explanatory.
It's even possible to zoom kind of smoothly in videos if you press and hold the 1x / zoom button. It would be useful if it (only really mild/gentle) snaps to 1x/2x position, because otherwise it's hard to set exactly 1x/2x (native/optical) zoom while zooming smooth.
Picture quality is decent. It’s better than my older & cheaper Moto G4 Plus (less noise, better in dark conditions) so you see the development but it’s not top notch compared to current competitors.
Few tiny translation issues:
Some literal translations; blocked call notification states “Neu gesperrt 1 Anruf€ gesperrt” instead of “Neu gesperrt 1 Anruf gesperrt” or “Neu gesperrt 2 Anrufe gesperrt”;…. But I think most of the translations are really good.
Double Tap to Wake works decent but not perfect. Sometimes I have to double tap 2 or 3 times before the screen wakes up.
I don’t like the dimensions.
I already mentioned the weight in the first impression. But I would prefer a slightly smaller phone with a more traditional aspect ratio. Unfortunately there are no interesting offers on the market. But with big hands it’s still possible (not comfortable) to use this phone mostly one handed.
All in all I'm undecided how much I like the Realme X2 Pro. On the on hand 429 EUR is a lot money for such few improvements over an cheaper and 3-4 years old smartphone I previously used. On the other hand the price-performance ratio is probably the best on the western market compared to all the other products. I think the X2 Pro is a valuable, good product for most people that search an up-to-date phone.
Let's just hope that Realme delivers frequent and good quality software updates.
i have it only a few hours.
My SIM is still on the old phone. Blazingly fast. But I cannot find full disk encryption anywhere. If it's not supported, it will be sold in the following days.
Only big issue with this phone is the thickness. After mounts I still don't like it... With the case, because a brick. But all the rest is ok. Some bugs here and there... Normal
So far, so good.
Just one piece of information I've been looking for within the specifications of other phones but nobody details: Realme X2 Pro supports LDAC Bluetooth Codec. Maybe this is obvious for other people reading A2DP or LE, but not for me. Having a pair of Sony WH-H910N headphones is good to know I can have the best quality for them.

I've used the ASUS ROG Phone 3 for ~1 month, so Ask Me Anything!

Hi XDA,
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 3 earlier today. I reviewed the phone for the XDA Portal after having used it for nearly a month (I received it on June 26th and published my review on July 22nd.) The phone has a metric ton of features, so if you have any specific questions about the ROG Phone 3, feel free to ask me a question. I'll enable notifications for new replies in this thread so I'll answer them as they come in.
I recommend reading the following posts first to see if they answer any of your questions:
Our launch coverage: ASUS launches the ROG Phone 3 with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, 144Hz display, and 6000mAh battery
My review: ASUS ROG Phone 3 Review: The King of Gaming Smartphones is back
I have also answered a few questions about the phone already on Reddit.
Hi and thanks for the review.
So I have had Rog 2 since the launch and although it's great overall, it has some big issues on display side and I want to know if rog 3 also suffers from the same issues.
1.the first issue that almost everyone knows about is the gray color turning to reddish color on lower brightness levels especially on 120hz. You'll have to test this with gray color background in a dark room but I can notice it even in a normal lit room.
2. the screen is kind of grainy and has a lot of bandings. you can also test this by downloading a 5% gray picture and turn the brightness all the way down in a completely dark room and look for oled bandings and lines and grainyness!
3. Huge Black crush! If you search google for "black crush test" the first result is a reddit question that leads to a video of a test picture. On rog 2 only and only on 100% brightness all the squares up to 5 are visible but as we turn down the brightness almost all squares become black (although they actually should be gray) and we can only see the first three squares at the bottom.(255% 100% and 50%)
and that means if we want to see everything in true color and we are supposed to see, we have to use 100% brightness all the time which not only hurts the eyes, but also brings screen burn-ins in as soon as 3 2 months.

I am also interested in knowing abot this , and also if there is image retention at High brightness, can be checked by staying at a static page for 1mint or more the quick switching to to a gray image , like the chrome in dark mode with all tabs closed , I take I screenshot of it an zoom it and out it into full screen that time I can see the ghost image of previously shown page
I'm really interested in the acoustics/ speaker volume - how does this aspect compare to other current flagships & also specifically to ROG 2??
Thanks.

1. I do not see any reddish tint on gray colors in low brightness levels in low ambient lighting. I tested at 144Hz, 1-20% brightness, dark room, and with the Reddit is Fun app set to a dark gray background.
2. I looked up a 5% grain photo and found a video on YT. At the minimum brightness wherein the picture becomes visible to my eye in a dark room, there's uneven graininess. Raising the brightness a bit and I can see horizontal banding. No issues at higher brightnesses, though.
3. Similar result on the ROG Phone 3, sadly.

No, the ROG Phone 3 does not support motion estimation/motion compensation, or MEMC, as it's called on the OnePlus 8 Pro or OPPO Find X2 Pro. The OnePlus 8 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro can do hardware-accelerated MEMC thanks to a dedicated display processor called the Iris 5, designed by a company called Pixelworks. More details on that here: https://www.xda-developers.com/pixe...ssor-android-display-experience-oppo-find-x2/

It's actually not quite as loud as the ROG Phone II. Still gets very loud in comparison to most devices, though. I've mentioned all the audio features that ASUS and Dirac added to the ROG Phone 3 in my review. You can thankfully tweak the speaker quality a bit with the 7-band equalizer and Bass/Treble slider in AudioWizard.
So based on your information, Im deciding to keep my rog2 for another year and see what 2021 brings us.
Hopefully an LCD gaming device or a high quality oled one.
Thank you for your answer
Can you please show the air triggers and how you can use them if you have that on hand?
So little people touch on this feature or expand on how it's used and I'm very curious as the rog 2 I have has had beta gestures forever.

I posted extensively about the AirTriggers in my review. What more do you want to know?
1)is there FM radio
2) Is 3rd party application shown on always on display
Can the AirTrigger functions be mapped for usage in other non-game Apps/ functions (including torch/ camera/ audio player etc)?
If not possible in stock, will custom ROMs (if they happen for ROG 3) be able to re-map AirTrigger functions?

Yes, you can set AirTriggers to work in non-gaming apps. I just mapped the left/right shoulder buttons to previous/next in Google Play Music. One problem: the stock camera app can't be added to ArmouryCrate. Further, when I added GCam, the camera viewfinder was totally black when I launched it. I suspect that the camera is being blocked by the overlay in some way.
The sound system benefits (volume/ bass/ enhancements etc) are only during gaming, or throughout general usage of phone (calls/ music/ videos)?
Thanks for the awesome review

Already answered in post #6 towards the end.....
I have been a loyal Pixel customer until now. I love my Pixel 4 XL, which is working very well. However, I am blown away by the ROG 3 specs. I am especially attracted to the display and the audio in addition to the fast performance. I have three questions for you i
1) What was your experience like with the display. Will it blow the Pixel 4 XL out of the water?
2) What was your experience with the performance like in comparison to other phones?
3) Is Asus good about updates ( yearly system updates as well as security updates on a monthly basis)?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hello, I don't play games on mobile at all yet I'm considering buying this phone simply because of the huge battery and speaker setup as those are the most important for me.
Do you think I should go for it?

I got the ROG Phone 2 for that same reason, and I can tell you that you won't be disappointed. You can go for the ROG Phone 3 for with the same results. Only difference there is that there is no built in headphone jack. I came from the OP7 Pro, so the only thing you'll miss is the higher quality display.
