Photo Comparison, Open Camera, GCam xtreme, Stock Cam, Focus Test Chart - Xiaomi Mi 9 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi All
I wanted to determine whether the 48MP mode of the camera was real 48MP or upscaled 12MP so I set up a focus test chart and took a bunch of photos. For completeness, I took the same photo with different lens combinations too.
It occurred that the photos may be useful to others so below is a link to the whole lot in a zip file:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1A_K6m9aahmQdrA0eEArExZAHiz0LkKMu
The photos are all named sensibly so hopefully you can identify each one easily. Here's the contents of the zip file:
GCam\GCam12MPTeleZoom2X.dng

GCam\GCam16MPULTRAWIDE.dng

As you can see, I've included some 100% crops and upscales of the crops for comparison.
I'll add more detail in the thread:

Cheers

Attached is a small version of the test chart. A full version is included in the zip above.

that's sad I just ordered the mi9, thought that the mobile is not capable of reaching the full megapixel count, but it seems the stock app can, it would be nice to take a raw with that resolution.. Any updates on this?

I do not think so this is a relevant comparison, due to there is so many software bug in the camera. Please check here for some example: photos.app.goo.gl/xLMhiBJVm8EwtvVCA

No, sorry I banged on the xiaomi.eu developers door and they told me to contact Xiaomi directly. I filed a bug report, but got no response.
It's a pity 'cos the Gcam ports work from the RAW files and those are smaller than the max res of the front and rear sensors.
I did ask if the Gcam developers could fish out 48mp raw, but was told it can only do what the camera2 api allows.
I'm not sure where to go now....

The Mi9 camera is totally unusable with the current ROM. You can find some detail here: c.mi.com/thread-2232484-1-0.html

This is totally unrelated to this topic

Could you try this? If it's true, maybe it works for the Mi 9 as well. If so, try raw while doing it and post some images thx

What Camera App do You Use?

Hey guys, I'm returning from a recent trip to iPhoneland and I'm looking for the camera app that's closest to keeping up with the iPhone's camera.
I'm running cm11 and so far the best I've found is this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2540030
This one takes a lot better pictures than the stock cm or the google camera from the play store, but it still lags behind the iPhone.
it's not about the camera app, it's about the hardware...
No camera app on LG G2 can match iPhone and/or Nokia just because of the camera hardware (sensor, lens,...) which is not that good on LG
To explore full benefits of LG camera hardware, you'll have to move to one of stock based roms and then try i.e. Xdabbeb camera...

Alright that's what I was kind of afraid of. I know that there is a limit to how good the camera is going to be but I was hoping I hadn't found it yet. There is a significant variation between the different camera apps I have tried. It's too bad we can't use the camera to its full potential on aosp based roms.
I would strongly disagree with what 60nine just said, but that's just me. The main issue is the stock "camera" app is kinda crappy and does way too much processing on the image data from the sensor. It's not the best image sensor that's ever been made, no, of course not, but it is quite a nice one especially with the OIS as part of the hardware.
Having said that, I personally use Mi2raw nowadays which allows me to capture pure raw image data from the G2 sensor and dumps it as a DNG (Adobe Digital Negative) file which I then transfer over to my laptop for editing/post processing using Photoshop.
If you want some examples of what the G2's camera is capable of, look here:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/[email protected]/pool/
You can find more info about Mi2raw (available on the Google Play Market, it's free) in the main thread for it and yes there's more pics too:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g2/general/app-mi2raw-enables-capturing-real-raw-t2837089
Again, we're not dealing with the best image sensor ever made but I've been damned happy with the results I've been getting with my G2 because of Mi2raw (I just got this G2 like 3 weeks ago).
As far as other apps, I use Aviary (it was free a few days ago, with every single filter they had for free too so I grabbed it all and backed it up safely), PerfectlyClear which gave away their Android app for free last week (it's not too bad, actually), and Photoshop Express (which can load the DNG files directly on the G2 directly from Mi2raw for quick viewing).
There's also XCam LG which adds a lot of functionality to the G2 including giving it 4K video recording capability (just make sure to read the details in the thread):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2548974
XCam LG has a settings app to tweak it further located on the Play Market as well, it's worth the price if you need it.
For me personally I just use Mi2raw for most every picture I snap these days then do editing/PP work when I get back home, it's what works best for me at this time.
Hope this helps...
Try Cymera. It's free and has good editing tools. Drawbacks are that it takes a bit to load and is not too stable. It's the only camera app that focuses correctly and has a proper white balance!!!! The resolution is small 1 Megapixel?, but the image is sharper and better than any 13megapixel shot from other camera apps or stock.
Otherwise just take the stock LG camera app as a daily driver.

why would you disagree if its known that iPhone and Nokia use way better sensor and lenses? (and i'm not an iphone fanboy, far from that )
i didn't say that LG hardware is crap - i'm just saying that it's no match to those two... or to say it better - "close but no cigar"
Nokia & iPhone give much better low light images than LG (partly due to better sensor, partly due to smaller f-stop lens number which lets more light onto the sensor)
for comparison
LG G2 has F/2.4 lens < iphone/nokia use F/2.2 lens (smaller the f-stop, more light comes in)

i didn't mention mi2raw app on purpose because it's not for everyone... and since i'm a photo hobbyist and DSLR owner, it gives me a bit of real camera world in a mobile device...
and what i like about mi2raw (besides its raw capability) is that the photos taken with that app don't look "painted" or "blurred" because of too much noise reduction that other camera apps produce
mi2raw would be too complicated to use for an average user... but hey - it's free, and everyone can try it and see
everything else you wrote - i second...
+ Snapseed is an image app worth mentioning especially with its ambiance setting that gives an image a nice "bump" in every way if it's used correctly...
personally i'm currently "stuck" with mi2raw, xdabbeb's XCam (because of those extra options you mentioned) and google camera (because it's the best for panorama/sphere images)
cheers...

"a Better Camera" app is what I use on non stock Roms and it's very good. LG camera hardware is not that good? You make me laugh... Can IPhone camera record 4k?Does it have ois?
The only thing that iPhone is better at is the image processing. That's it. (period).
I use the G2's stock camera app on AICP. It's okay, but the images look washed out compared to my Optimus G.

Bulsh*t of the month/year? :fingers-crossed: Only way to reveal the potencial of any and I mean ANY camera HW is to shoot RAW only! You can say Lg stock camera is bad and I will agree but not talk about HW whenn you didnt see pure RAW data. Just look at the samples I shot with the best android camera for photo enthusiasts: Mi2raw camera which is capable of capturing pure DNG files without freaky Lg jpeg engine, which is IMHO the worst I ever seen. I took indoor photos on ISO400-800 so dont blame the small sensor of more noise, no such a small sensor will perform any better. Still great results in todays mobile photography. Even Xdabbed camera which is great contribution cannot match results from RAW data and personal approach for photography. One minute for one photo and the results are uncomparable.
Anyone tried porting the Pixelmaster camera app from the various Asus Zenfones? It takes really incredible low light photos by reducing resolution to 2 megapixels and it is awesome (the only reason I fell envious of my brother's otherwise mediocre zenfone 5). Check here too, someone had plans of porting but not sure what happened to him since... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2712403

again. it takes normal pics at full resolution, then there is a night mode which takes very very nice pics in dark situations at full resolution (better than almost any other phone out there) and then there is a special night mode that reduces pic resolution to 2 megapixels, but boy those night pics are the best I have ever seen.... Check this for example. and no worries about zenfone 5 camera being 8 megapixels. the zenfone 6 has 13 and same software...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_TPqwDYStI
so you still live in a world where more megapixels mean better images?
i.e. see why HTC went for lower mpx in its flagship devices...
about my "bullsh*t of the year"... do some reading and know some basics of the digital photography...
i never said that LG G2 camera is bad, read my post again & read hardware tech specs of the other devices...
i like the mi2raw app very much (see my posts there in the app thread) - it's the best thing that happened to this device considering the camera/photo...
and i think LG G2 camera hardware can do much more - especially on the strange "painted like" image compression effect which i hate so much...
i'd say - LG G2 is close, but no cigar

Because of RAW the G2 is one of the top android cameras, that is true. However, the flagship Lumia devices also shoot RAW.
Yes I know, iphone can shoot RAW too, so android is behind somehow...
60nine: Ive read everything you've written, thats why I had to react. I know a lot about photography, HW a more, so Im OK. Thanks. And about pixels, even 8Mpx iphone camera is worse than 16Mpx SGN4 camera so give me a break...HTCs cameras are the worst from the biggest flagship manufacturers. HTCs cameras lags of detail and lost every shootout with competition. And I will tell you something, you will need at least 2160p for viewing on upcoming 4K display devices...so now the pixels matters. I know that more pixels suffers from dynamic range and more noise, but it will be hidden in more Mpx photo with good postprocess. So if you find comparison between IP6 and LG G2 in RAW at same settings and same scene and IP6 will be better, youll have my respect and appologies.

i won't bother answering to a person who thinks more mpx means better images (on a same sized sensor), so cheers...

Best Gcam mod for Mi A3 so far?

The last post I found about this was from september, so can anyone tell me what's the best gcam mod so far?
in both terms of image quality and adaptation (being able to use frontal camera would be a pleasure)
I am using this:
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/PMGC_7.0.009_Astrophotography_Version_V7.apk
I´ve tested 4 or 5 gcam mods so far, but really, the differences are very small. Most of them denoise the pictures too much, I prefer the more grainy pictures from the stock cam, they are showing more details in most of the pictures I´ve taken, in daylight and in low light situations.

It's kinda sad to hear that. Do you remember any mod with not much denoise effect?
I think it is a good thing. So I don´t have to switch between two Cam Apps. Its all personal preference. If one likes the smooth, degrained and denoised pictures because they´re "looking better" on a small display, go ahead.
If it comes to details, white balance and which one is closer to what I see with my eyes, stock cam wins 9 out of 10 times - in MY eyes.
+1, tried a bunch of gcam mods and in the end dumped them all. I was not happy with post-processing and heavy details reduction. Probably ok for Instagram.
My only complaint about the stock cam is inconvenient UI especially in Pro mode.

Hi everyone!
I just got my A3. Any progress on GCam vs Stock? There are SO many GCams..
Thanks!
I tried all that worked with the Mi A3 (upto v 7.3) but still preferred the stock cam. Yes, the UI for Pro sucks.
Gcam files are larger than stock and stock cam colours are realistic compared to gcam.

Future RAW file support?

Hi All
I just picked up the Oppo 10x zoom for a very decent price. Hadn't been specifically considering it but wanted a good, flexible camera and everything else is so expensive now. I knew that the phone didn't support saving RAW files in the camera app but thought it was worth the trade off given its low price. I'm coming from an LG G6.
I've installed Gcam and this does seem to provide RAW with the main lens, but to get the wide and telephoto lenses would require me to root, which I am not prepared to do (and even then I don't know if there are any configs that would allow using them anyway). I should say that I am not 100% sure this is true raw, although it saved as a .dng file.
I assume that Oppo doesn't intend to add this feature in the future because they would already have done so. But, I thought it might be worth asking: does anyone know if they might? I presume this hasn't been added with ColorOS 7? (I believe that the Find X2 Pro supports RAW for example).
Many thanks and hope everyone is doing well in this strange times.

With the 10xz being capable of RAW photography, I can't see any reason why Oppo don't implement it in their camera software as it is using camera2.api
It's a bit embarrassing that the awful GCam supports it and Oppo camera doesn't. If it did, it would certainly make it one the the best Android camera systems

I can understand why Oppo might want to limit RAW support to the 'Expert' mode, but there doesn't seem to be a good reason to not allow it at all. Especially given the photo-focused nature of the camera. I know that RAW files out of phones can sometimes look really bad because the phone makes so many changes to the image data from the sensor when it creates the final jpeg. But I am prepared to make those adjustments myself.
I updated to the c.27 ColorOS 7 update last night and they have made some nice layout changes to the camera app - I am particularly pleased with the move to a 5x rather than a 6x zoom step. So, they are still investing some time in supporting the 10x Zoom.
On GCam, the RAW file produced is not recognised by my desktop editing programme, DXO Photolab 3, but Snapseed on the phone does seem to recognise it as a proper .dng RAW file. Regardless, I would have thought OPPO itself could enable RAW properly - perhaps include it with an update to allow video recording from all three lenses (which again must be technically possible because it can be done in the developer debugging mode).
For what it's worth I contacted Oppo UK to ask about adding RAW file support to the 10x Zoom. They replied really quickly, which was good. They said they would feed this back to relevant people, which is all one can expect. But I think it's worth giving the feedback anyway.

It's a step.
Yep.
I've been doing some more experimenting with the RAW files. An easier way to get a .DNG file is to use Open Camera (or a number of others do the same thing) - this doesn't require installing from a .APK like GCam.
Snapseed seems to see these as true RAW files and the ones from Open Camera are the a much larger file size than the jpegs (~22mb). I've tried editing a couple and they do seem to give the kind of latitude I would expect with a RAW file (given its a phone sensor). Again only with the main camera. This is of some use if you want to do things like B&W conversions as this should be better quality going from RAW to a B&W jpeg then using the camera's B&W filter or converting a colour jpeg to B&W. It might also be useful if you want to bring out the shadows or try and save highlights, I would expect results to be slightly better than the phone's auto settings. But, this may not be by much, and may not be worth the hassle of RAW. What's probably more useful is tweaking the image's colours and sharpness to suite your taste for important photographs.
What I am not clear on:
The .DNG files are not recognised by DXO Labs 3 - which they should be if they were true .DNG files. I've even tried converting them with Adobe's DNG converter, but still no luck. This makes me suspicious.
The .DNG files are saved as 12mp files, so they have been through the pixel binning process. I don't know when Oppo applies the conversion from pixel-binned file to jpeg. If it goes 48mp RAW -> 48mp jpeg -> pixel binned 12mp jpeg, then these can't be true RAW files. If it's 48mp RAW -> 12mp pixel-binned RAW -> 12mp jpeg, they could be.
It is frustrating though that the tele and wide sensors are not available to the Camera2 API. Especially as I think the Oppo Find X2 Pro's telephoto sensor is the same as the 10x zoom's and does allow RAW.
I'll continue to play around and put any significant finds in this thread.
I managed to make RAW photos with FreeDCam. - https://f-droid.org/en/packages/troop.com.freedcam/
FreeDCam seems to support all 4 cameras, so you can also make raw photos with the telephoto lens for example.
Unfortunately I did not managed to take photos with 48M pixels, yet.
It is opensource, so maybe 48M pixel support could be added. Unfortunately, again, I do not have time to do so right now...

Question Low-quality or blurry front camera

Hi, I notice that whenever I use my front camera, especially on messager. the quality is so low or blurry. Is anyone experiencing this?
Me too its even worse than my old oneplus 6 , I'm very disappointed
Same, I don't know why the GT 2 Pro has a really bad front cam. My old Xiaomi Mi 9T can do better do. The front cam of the GT 2 Pro has a very smudgy look which I don't know if it's because of the software or something else.
I recently got the phone and notice this too when taking pictures of items with lettering. It is not as sharp. My old Huawei P10 was better.

Yes, it will improve, but not significantly. It makes sense especially for the main camera.
all software related, the front sensor is actually amazing. I get amazing results using third party apps.

Free you can use open camera, it supports 4k on front camera and has camera2api support, and some gamma curves that helps a lot. But if you want amazing quality you can get mcpro24fps that supports 4k, 10bit color depth, HDR HGL profile recording, lots of gamma curves and gamuts, you can get front camera footage out of it that will make anyone think you using a professional camera if you know how to use them properly. Other option is motioncam pro that records full RAW DNG frames witch is crazy hi quality but very hard to use and extremely heavy to deal with. So my recommendation is mcpro24fps, and for photos gcam off course. If you don't use gcam in any android device you just crazy.
This video is from the front camera with mcpro24fps:
I can take a shot on full blow clear sky and sun tomorrow if you want to see the great dinamic range you can get
Wow, that is from the selfie lens? Amazing!!
mcpro24fps is in the google play store correct?
Is 8.4 the latest GCam? If so where is the best place to download the apk?

Yep, thats selfie camera, as I said.....amazing sensor but terrible Realme software.
Yes, mcpro24fps is on play store
For gcam go on the telegram realme gt2 pro gcam group you can find everything there.
Attaching here an example of the front camera dinamic range with proper software, not the stock camera blow out **** they provide.

I modified the AGC cam. The original source is: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-BigKaka/f/dl9/
Modification:
- Changed package name so Realme GT2 Pro exposes all lenses
- Added settings option which pops up if you long click on app icon on your launcher
If the app is crashing enter the settings via long click on app icon and change the Device Interface for all lenses. E.g. to "Pixel 2 XL (Taimen)".
----
Added base config. You need to unzip file before use.

Yeah, try doing the same in the stock camera , you gonna look like a nuclear bomb exploded, I really never even bother opening the stock camera app, it makes me mad to see a good sensor wasted with this Realme software. Just the fact that front camera is capped at 1080 for no reason drives me crazy already.
I think the app is worth every penny. The developers are also amazing, just a while ago there was no support for 10bit HDR on the app for the gt2 pro, I asked about it on the official app telegram group and in one week they added support

You need to buy the calibration tool and calibrate it yourself, there is no other way to fix it that I know

Question Raw 50mp pictures?

Hi!
I'm interested in the Zenfone 9 and I would like to know if the phone can take raw 50mp pictures?
If that's the case, would it be possible that one of you to post one or two raw 50mp outside pictures (city or nature landscape preferably) as samples to play with? I haven't managed to find raw samples on internet.
Thanks!
No unfortunately not with the stock camera app for now. It's a bit strange they didn't implement it from the get go. I'm sure they will update the app at some stage. Either that, or a Gcam solution will surely fix it.

It's possible by go to pro mode then go to setting and select raw + jpeg capture. The icon with raw and 50 MP will appear in viewfinder. It's kinda hidden and easy to miss

Found it. Omg what the heck? The main settings actually changes when you are in pro mode when entering. Atleast it is there. But I'm mindblown by that stupid choice. Why not add it as an extra option on settings‍
Thanks for the info!
It's a shame that it's a bit hidden but at least the option is here for people who like to do more advance photography!
If one of you could take one or two raw pics to share, that would be awesome for me and others who want to check raw picture quality on this phone
Will do!

Ingen idé att försöka vara diskret . Yeah, even an iphone 4 can take decent pictures when the lightning conditions are good, tbh I don't see myself using the 50mp mode that much in the future but rather stick to G-Cam.
Tack för bilderna! I recognize Sweden but wasn't sure it's Stockholm (I'm living in Gothenburg).
Actually the pics are JPG and not raw That would be awesome if you guys could upload a couple of 50mp raw format pics
Thanks/tack!
