How to install Custom themes on VOG-L04 or any other device thats restricted to local - Huawei P30 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

What you need:
Huawei Mobile Services - Get it on APK Mirror
Package Manager: App Details, Analyze & Backup - Get it on the Play Store
Steps:
1) Uninstall any update Play Store has made to your theme app
2) Install Huawei Mobile Services
3) Install Package Manager: App Details, Analyze & Backup
4) Open the package manager you installed and click on the "Activities" tab, then in the search bar type in "hwid" it will show Huawei Mobile Services. Click it to expand its activities.
5) Scroll the list of activities until you see ""HUAWEI ID" click it and then choose launch
6) this will bring you to a log in page with a link to "register" click it to create an account. Create an account, use "UK" as your region, skip the phone/sms verification and it will use your email to verify.
7) Verify your account.
8) Scroll the list of activities until you see "Account Center" click it and then choose launch which will bring you to what should be an already logged in the account manager
9) Open the themes app it will ask you to agree to the terms then notify you its switching to the Local of your Huawei ID. Bam custom themes.
10) disable the themes app auto update in the play store as it will reset the app back to the North american CUST features.
11) ???
12) Profit.

Just curious, but why is this necessary? Does Huawei not allow users in all regions to install custom themes?

custom thems are locked out of certain regions, which means your stuck with the half dozen that come built into the rom and thats it.

This step unfortunately doesn't work on my UK Honor 7s (DUA-L22) EMUI 8.0 android 8.1
Pressing on launch account center just glitches the screen out and doesn't open anything up.
Edit
After installing both those apps, my previously installed custom themes have now returned that disappeared after the February/March OTA update.
So this really does work, just slightly different (for my device)
Thanks alot.

Just the screen "glitches" (flashed white) but the Account centre never opened....
When I returned to the theme manager after unsuccessfully trying to open Account centre, my custom themes I had installed on my device from March had returned and all work like before.
(The nav bar and notification shade still don't change theme, as before so the same functionality from before has now returned.

I have to correct you there - I've never found a theme yet that has changed the notification shade colour - the android p theme does change the nav bar to the filled in arrow circle and square but no other themes have ever worked.
I assumed that was an honour thing.
Had the device since November last year, dual SIM SIM unlocked in UK.
Tried just about every theme there is and haven't yet been able to change the notification shade.

Android P grey theme.
Applied and rebooted.
Notification shade hasn't changed - but nav bar has changed.
And yes you are very correct, it hasn't worked properly because I don't have the theme store on my device still (used to be until last OTA update)

Thats too bad might be because mine is from the p30

I had the same issue as that other guy with the flashing screen. I had to use the Huawei ID activity instead and that worked. Afterwards, I tried the Account Center activity and it went to the account settings, while the Huawei ID activity no longer worked. Thanks for the post in any case, helped a ton!

yeah, don't look for "Reapply" button, you should go to theme store again and click "Free Trial" on this theme again.
As for notification still in black, don't worry, it will revert back after reboot
(Custom trial theme mod from outside theme store needs reboot to apply and clear )
And to make custom theme stick and not revert back to default themes,
I will update the post later.

yes, you will need to do procedure on how to make theme not reverting back,
using package disabler app, try BK package disabler,
after you apply the theme, disable samsung theme store and Themes (themecenter) and go to
developer mode\running apps\, then you stop this apps named "themes". *Thanks Philt198

you dont need clear data. You only do 2 steps:
1. you install this theme and use Samsung disable package to disable theme center and samsung themes.
2. you enter developer mode\running apps\, then you stop this apps named "themes".
Afterall you done. Will never revert !!!
P/s: you must do step 2 again when you restart phone !

[Oreo] Substratum Theme Compatability

Has anyone had any luck applying Substratum/other overlays on Oreo (specifically CRA1)?
I have Andromeda, Sungstratum, all that stuff installed.
Yes but it took a while to find out how it worked. I'm rooted BTW so I don't need Andromeda.
Compile & activate the theme.
Reboot.
Go to substratum - manager
Activate all overlays again
Reboot
That's how it works for me.

How do you root CRA1?
Just recently got the manual Oreo CRA1 update coming from Nougat on T-Mobile S8+. It is incredibly quicker and much more fluid.
On Substratum I'm on Swift Black Complete Edition, along with Material Black from Samsung Themes. On Nougat that worked buy using the "Sungstratum" add on from the Play Store. When I upgrade to Oreo 8.0, I was no longer able to see Sungstratum in the Play Store. Instead, Substratum asked for another plug-in to allow it to run fully, Andromeda. So of course, had to buy that too.
But anyway, it's working nice. Visually that is. After finally being able to set it up to where I need it. Although, I am only still trying to figure out how to get a dark overlay for the notification card. Haven't figured that out yet.
You will have installation issues of overlays if you upgrade to Oreo CRA1 because of the new different plug-in used to activate Substratum. In my case, here is what I had to do when I installed a new overlay from a new theme. The symptom is, I install an overlay, but it doesn't show in under the "Manager" tab. Only under the theme and in the orange color, so it's saying that it's disabled. No matter however many times I select the overlay and choose options and re-enable overlay OR change overlay status, nothing happens.
What I had to do was simply restart the phone, run the Andromeda client from my computer and then go back to the overlay in Substratum and enable it, only then does it enable and turn green. The overlay actually installls this time.
I hate that part. Sucks for when trying and messing with new overlays just to try them out, makes the whole process just a freaking hassle.
Now, to the real question. You know how to get dark notification cards? Maybe dark notification tiles for the lock screen ?? that would be awesome.

Yep. Search Coffee in the forums and install it. It will then be in your Samsung themes to apply. It will black out your settings, phone, contacts and notifications. The QS Tile color comes from the coffee theme. The actual icons are from a Substratum theme.

I've had no problems. I would disable your overlays before you apply coffee. Apply coffee and see if the notifications are blacked out. If they are Grey change the resolution on your display back and forth and see of that fixes it. If that doesn't rebooting should fix it. The only minor drawback to this theme is that Samsung wants to kill it after it's been applied for 10 minutes. To stop that from happening once you get the theme working properly go in to developer options and stop the themes app. Then go in to settings-Apps-Enable system apps and clear cache and data for the Samsung themes app and the themes app. It seems like a lot of work but once you've done it a few times it only takes a minute or 2. Any time you reboot your phone you will have to redo that process. Hope it works out for you. Reach out with any other questions.

Swift black Substratum theme for og Moto Z android 8.0

I have installed substratum along with the addon and also I have the swift black Theme installed. A user on reddit reported it working fine . However the app doesnt apply the theme to drop down menu and system settings . I have it set on other(experimental) android version . Should I choose android 8 pixel/nexus to see if it works ?

Yeah, you should use the pure 8.0 one, the stock Motorola rom is close to AOSP in the UI department, Swift Black should completely apply.
You will have to reboot every time after crafting the overlays and only then do you enable them.

I re applied the patch with the experimental setting again a couple of times and it applied the theme to the system without me checking the box for it don't know how though. When I tried the nexus setting it didn't theme any app . How do you go with the process? Build & enable and then restarting or something else?

On stock Oreo, I chose the "8.0-Nexus or Pixel", built the overlays, rebooted and enabled them. As simple as that.

Everything is working for me.
Every time Swift Black gets updated from the Play Store, you need to Install and Enable the overlays and reboot.
And when Whatsapp gets updated, Swift Black follows with an overlay for it within a day or two.

So you never had a problem with WhatsApp after updating?
so if I want to update whatsapp, for example, I have to delete old swift black theme lays then restart the phone and install again?
i think i should never update whatsApp to keep it working with black theme.
if you don't update app's will it force you? force mean's app won't work until updated?

On stock 8.0 you have to just install the new overlay ( the one for the newer Whatsapp version ), reboot and enable it in Substratum.
This part is optional:
after that's done and Whatsapp is themed and working, go into the Substratum Installed Overlay list and remove the Whatsapp overlay for the older version ( don't touch the newer overlay ) if there are actually 2 different overlays.
It is just me or there is more battery consumption when there is a theme active then when it's not.....even with the Swift black???

It's just you. My SOT has increased since I started using the theme. I didn't calculate specifically, but the phone had more juice left after a day of regular use.

Substratum + Andromeda for LG V40?

Not a big fan of the themes that LG offers. I was using Substratum + Andromeda on my Galaxy S8 Active and loved it. I'm wondering if Substratum + Andromeda will work on the V40?
It works kind of. I use Swift dark and it themes all the Google apps but not any of LG's system apps. I haven't encountered any bugs or issues so far.

Yes Substratum and Andromeda are on Play Store. Andromeda is needed for Substratum to work on non root devices and is $1.99
I have an issue with the LG Icons.
I downloaded two Icon packs, changed them for a week, enjoyed it, but decided to change again.
Now regardless of any Icon pack choice, I only get half the Icons to change. Not even if I go back to stock version ... the half that don't convert back are now just an outline of the Icon and I can't find a way to convert them at all.

Thank you ... but sadly, it didn't work for me.
It seems as if I lost the stock Icons altogether.
If I don't figure it out soon, I may factory reset the phone while I'm still exploring it and tweaking it.

That's "bull"
And on top of that, I can't purchase anything in Smartworld? It's not even available any more, the themes you pay for, I mean.
Have you checked so all permissions and "Modifie System" and "Install Unknown Apps" are granted?

I really don't understand it either. I've done all the above, yet, you no avail.
I found a free Home Screen & Icon App I like. I'll stay with that for a while till I figure out how to get the Stock Icon back.

I use Whicons. They're perfect for dark wallpapers, etc.
Same here. Though, oddly half my icons are stuck from the first set I tried from Smartworld. I cannot seem to recover the stock icons as of yet....

Huawei themes does not working anymore :'(

Hi everyone, I have a p20 lite ane-lx3. Since October security patch update, when I want to apply one theme, the theme doesn't apply properly because the status bar and navigation bar doesn't change :'(
I don't know if I have problems with my phone or huawei quit that feature.. Have you been experiencing this?
Thank you.
PS: I have done two factory reset on the phone.
Did you restart your phone after applying the theme?

Yes, I did but nothing changed. Also I did two factory reset but didn't work :'(
Hmm don't know Bro. Restart after applying theme worked for me. Then the themes loaded correctly.
you should send your phone to repair
I am experiencing the same problem. It seems like the last couple of updates changed some things and that has broken the theming engine. I guess we will just have to wait till the next update where it might get fixed.
even I too want to confirm that there is nothing wrong with the phone. People are not checking their phones properly and are under the impression that their themes are working properly. To know if a theme is working fully, after applying a theme and reboot, check if icons under settings applet have changed or not, check whether status bar icons are changing or not, if having VoLTE connection, check whether its changing to HD instead of VoLTE(applicable for some themes), battery icons and even some apps interface (usually the Calculator).
Currently the only thing that is working is changing of app icons, wallpapers and a few colors like message/sms colors, and nothing else unless you use Xposed to tweak your visuals or some substratum theme engine. Even Huawei too confirmed that their theme engine is broken and they are working on a fix with Android 9 update, but they are clueless about when it will be released for beta testing, but they confirmed that development of emui for p20 lite is on the works and broken themes wont be fixed until l Android 9.
However some noobs are happy that their app icons got changed and are celebrating the fact that theme engine is working properly.
@fbh59
Thnx for the tip. Feeling like a big noob right now.
Never realised that only the dialer, icons and colours changed whilst changing themes.

yes!!! let me attach a theme, kindly test and post your screenshots. I shall show you the difference between your smartphone visuals and that of mine. I can showcase as I am still with September patch. But I am not sure whether I can show the difference as you seem to use P10
Thanks, tested it and only things that don't change are settings menu icons and status bar.
Nice theme, no fan of apple so I'm not going to use it but nice work!!
Huawei Theme Engine Broken
While these are the screen visuals of my screen with an older security patch. I didn't use any substratum theme engine or Xposed tweaks to change the colour within apps like Play Store, VLC. Even Outlook interface was changed to Red instead of usual blue, but couldn't post it due to all confidential items inside it.
P.S: I don't know whats so "apple" in it? I used this theme just for a neat status bar. Used a different theme for app icons. The only thing I had to bear is under software version it shows ios 11 instead of emui 8(but who visits that screen). Lockscreen too can be changed. I might use an app like Theme Editor for EMUI to change status bar icons, but certain things are not changed like displaying HD instead of VoLTE. Copy pasting of this theme's status bar into other themes and building a new theme too does no help.
Hence the problem
Sh*t. I have the same problem with December patch for p20 lite.
App icons are changing but icons on settings are stock icon

Just received EMUI 9.1 (9.1.0.132) and the themes are still broken also did a reset + cleared cache. Is there any other solution?
Huawei themes does not work!
When I enter the app no themes apply
I may have found it, read this:
''We appreciate the feedback and would like to share some background information and clarifications.
The Overlay Manager Service (OMS) is intended for device manufacturer's use. OMS, in its current form, is not designed to be a generic theming feature -- more design considerations will need to be put into it in order to uphold Android platform's security and product standards for users. Accordingly, OMS has never been advocated as a public developer feature.
Earlier this year a security patch (CVE-2017-13263) was released to OEMs for Android Oreo devices. The patch restricts the installation of overlays to pre-installed or system-signed apps, in response to a legitimate security issue raised in Android Oreo. Android Pie also includes this critical security patch, so it restricts overlays in the same way as does Android Oreo.
We understand that custom theming is an important capability for some users. We will take your feedback into consideration with any future work in this area.''

Don't report this to Huawei, they can't do much about it and only Google can, but they have to find a way to get rid of the security issue before making it work again.

Ok
Theme manager is less useful then before. Huawei is getting more and more restricted like Apple. I hate that
