Forcing always on HDR in the camera app - Huawei P30 Pro Guides, News, & Discussion

One of my few complaints about this camera, is the fact that it's one of the few flagships, if not the only one where we don't have an HDR toggle, and that we have to go to a separate mode to force HDR. Why don't they give us the option to choose whether we want it always on? I'll post few pictures down below that showcase how much better the picture looks with HDR vs not having it on, especially when you zoom in, the difference is night and day.
So, is there a way to force it to always be on? Maybe through ADB, and although it's been years since I rooted any of my phones, I would do it in a heartbeat if there's a way to force HDR to always kick in. A donation for someone who can do this is also on the table.
Again, please take your time in checking the amount of detail and colors HDR is able to grab, especially once the telephoto camera kicks in.

Not that I know of, it is one the things that annoyed me since I started using Huawei with P9 and then Honor View 10 before P30 Pro.

I never get note of this but you are right, i tested the same on my p30 pro and HDR isn't the only thing, images are a lot more sharper on HDR mode when using telelens.
the effect isnt so dramatic when using the normal 40mpix lens but when telelens is used the HDR mode kicks in really good.

Ai does not work with HDR on. That's why I guess

That's because it does automatically use HDR at times, but sometimes when you need it to use HDR, it doesn't, and that's what pisses me off.
What sucks for me is that almost never it uses HDR when shooting in portrait mode, in many instances I end up getting a blown up background when I use portrait mode with a bright light source in the background.
The hardware on this phone is capable of wiping the floor with the Pixel 3, and even their software, it's just that Huawei has been sticking to some dumb choices for years now. All our complaints, and they decide that they don't want to listen to them and do anything about it.

This has been a complaint of mine since the P20 Pro. I do not believe there is a way to force HDR, though I really wish there was!

i think the must put HDR switch on/off in the main camera interface , and the HDR image its a way better then the non HDR image tacking by camera

But the front câmera work on AI HDR ...Crazy !

Ikr? Why don't they give us the same toggle but for the rear cameras as well?

To be honest i don´t get you? There is a HDR Mode, the camera will always shoot in HDR, so exactly what you want?

No the camera did not always shoot in HDR

If you switch the mode i would bet it does, it is not on the main interface but there is a dedicated mode for HDR. I would extremely doubt that this mode has no function

We want a quick toggle that gives us the option to choose if we want HDR to always be on, auto, or off, just like on almost every other flagship. We don't want separate mode.

Who "we"? It is so simple to choose hdr mode. And if AI is turned on and phone says "keep steady" it means it take hdr shot then.

First is hdr mode and second is AI on in normal auto mode

There's no way to compare because one shot was with the primary camera and the second one with the wide-angle...

Oh I'm sorry, did it bother you that I used the term we?
I'm talking in general, there have been tons of forums about this issue with Huawei's camera app, so I'm not the 1st to complain about it, and I definitely won't be the last. And as you can see in this thread, WE as a majority still find it stupid to put HDR as a separate mode and not a quick toggle, kinda like they did with the AI mode before, until they changed it the past few months. Now, if you have no issues with this, good for you, and this forum isn't clearly for you.
And two, I posted images with AI on vs HDR on, and if you can't see the results, then that's on you.

I want this feature too... HDR always ready on Main Camera, HDR+ will be much awesome...

Another app?
Isn't any other camera app for P30 Pro that does a better job?

xperia s camera options

Hi, does anybody know a link to a guide in the different camera modes for xperia s? Like what does portrait, landscape, night portrait, etc does. I want to understand how each mode works cause the camera aint that good especially under low light. Most of the time its blurry.. But under good lighting conditions, the picture i get is just mind blowing. So i want to know the right modes for any scenario to get the most out of the camera. Thanks.

Hi there. Well first of all, I dont know about any guide about making photos on XS. And what you are talking about are scenery modes. Those are made exactly to help the final look of the photo by adding contrast or light to the photo. So if you are taking a photo at night, select the night mode and the photo will be less dark and be better looking. I know that it wont look like those good light photos you can take by the beach cause phone cameras are just made that way...
Oh yeah and also that sport mode is wery usefull! It takes the photo very fast so there will be no blurred objects like a person who is jumping into a pool. Looks good and you can really capture the moment with that mode So, to wrap it up, when you are taking a photo in good light I use the normal mode with multiple objects focus. In low light conditions I use the Scene modes. Hope this helped

Thanks for the help there but i dont get the sport mode. Does it decrease picture quality? Same with landscape. Because why would i set to normal mode when you can have sport mode which as described, reduces blurr.. The main prob on the xs camera. So is it practical to set the default to sport mode instead? Sorry i aint no pro like you..

To capture fast object, you need fast shutter speed. The thing is when shutter speed is high, less light got into sensor, in a result of darker image. So the camera tend to push the iso level higher which create more noise.

Does this mean that the Xperia has a variable shutter speed? if so are there any apps that can adjust the shutter speed?

I think aperature mode reduces some of the over face softening and blemish removal. But it's still not as sharp as some phones like the Pixel. I think some places in the world prefer softer and lighter faces, so it's incorporated into the camera software. I'm awaiting replacement right now, so I can't check to see if its available under the front camera. It helped with the back camera for me.
Just looked, sadly there is no aperture under front camera. Is there any other way to reduce it? It is a software thing right?
And I tried to use portrait mode with selfie cam but there is no bokeh effect do I have to do something else?
Reduce beauty effect to zero

In the camera app.. There are 3 options to get what you wanted. Test them all. I find the selfie cam close to pixel phone as well
I will try thanks. But what about the bokeh effect? It does not apply to it when I shoot a picture in the portrait mode

I got this answer from other forum.
I am not sure you are talking about the fron or rear camera so i just assume you meant the fron one.
Go to portrait mode, there will be 3 buttons below, press the one on the bottom left and select the one after "None"; the round one.
Try taking photos after you adjust the settings above.

Hi! In view finder there is a option(looks like a box), you should enable it for bokeh mode.
If you use portrait mode, and really need the bokeh (which is far from perfect even on Pixel 3), then use Portrait mode, and just hold still when you take the shot. The phone will sharpen the photo if you hold the phone steady.
My selfies are sharper on the Mate 20 Pro than my Pixel 3 (Which I am going to sell as it's rubbish)
Also, remember the smart HDR can make the photo look overprocessed.
CHinese version is updated to 166 and reportedly to improve selfie. I'll wait if not I will sell it.

Does Oppo Reno supper Google camer?

Anyone with that phone tried google camera app?
Or no support for Google camera with oppo again with this phone?
Is still early days and I'm not sure whether the camera does raw and what level access oppo allows either
I've been checking daily but it seems there's no development for it yet. However, given that it's the same sensor as in the oneplus 7 pro, and if the phone has the same level of permissions, then you could assume gcam will work for the main rear sensor which for me is the important one.

Yes it does but ATM stock camera is superior in everything.
Though I clicked some pics last night with normal and ultra wide night mode and normally the pics looks good.
However when I zoom the pics it looks like water colour effect is there.
Will click more tonight and update here.
Would it be possible to have comparison samples at night.

Hi thanks for the info.
My biggest drive to use the gcam is for people. My huawei mate 10 beauties so much, even with ai turned off. Prior to huawei blocking gcam, it took great pictures.
Most cameras, especially Samsung, beautify by default which is why I'm really keen on gcam but on a great phone like the 10x zoom. My huawei smooths my kids face so much he looks like a cgi cartoon
The camera isn't that bad, better said it is quit good IMO, and it is way better than the camera on my OnePlus 5T.
Once the Gcam will be better, we can easily switch.

Xiaomi Mi9T/Redmi K20 Photo & Video Thread

Hello,
First of all, we glad that xiaomi produced this completed package phone with budget price.
Lets share our photos and videos experiences using this lovely device.
Currently the downside that I found in video is lack shooting 24fps video and Filmic Pro wont open.
Feel free to share your photos guys
The phone is capable of taking great pictures with the Stock Camera if you have good light conditions like you see in my sample shots. They were taken with the main camera and just point and shoot. No fiddling around in the pro menu. However in low light I would recommend using the Google Camera port. The results are night and day compared to the stock camera and also selfies come out better with the Google camera.

maybe it's some little hand movement while taking the shot, you should try to take a picture with the phone fixed so you see the real result.

I'm not a huge photographer. I really need the camera only for point and shoot scenarios and for that the cameras in this phone are more than enough. And for low light and selfies I just use Gcam.

That's actually impressive that a phone can capture that much details!! I wonder how it looks with Gcam.
GCam result look better for me, even the Night Mode. Stock cam sometimes abit blur/miss focus, dunno why... but with GCam, the contras is more stunning than the stock.
Pro mode stock app can take longer shutter speed than Moment Pro Camera app that i have.
anyone tries the video? Moment Pro Camera app video still cannot shoot 24fps, Filmic Pro cannot open the app.
Any idea why the phone doesn't support 4k60 Video? Because it can take 1080p240 Video which uses the same bandwidth .
What version and settings of Gcam are you guys using?

The IMX582 doesn't take 4K60 but only 30 frames. If you go full HD then 60 fps is ok. It is the snapdragon 730 that can't and it's the only difference with the pro version (snap 855)

yes, autofocus was or maybe still is broken, especially in 60fps mode - not sure how it is now on stable roms, as am using betas.
4K video are nowhere at 30 fps, more around 20fps.
I can see that EIS is working at 4K res on 9.8.8 beta
Honestly my Pocophone is much better in video recording than Mi9T.
Still photo wise - I have made many nice shots with pocophone in past, not a single one as nice with Mi9T so far...

Selfie terribly bad

So im a bit confused. Maybe its just happening to my phone but i highly doubt it. So i open the selfie camera and i align up for a shot. Everything looks crisp and clear while alingning the photo. Once I take the photo and go to the gallery to view it. Oh my god it is really bad, like it was taken with a phone from 10 years ago. No dinamic range, no clarity, details lost, flatten everything. I have a beard, before actually pressing the camera button you can see every hair and everything looks good. After i press the button and take the picture it is all gone. Now before you say it, i have everything turned down (beauty mode, hdr, and any sort of filters) and i tried with them on as well. The camere is set on the 24mp setting and on photo mode not portrait. Please help, im going mad about this as i see the potential of a good photo with extremely bad result. Thanks

For me at least it was like this since forever. The image processing is terrible even tho the cameras are really potent
i don't have this problem but the selfie are really horrible! my old Oneplus 3 with gcam really do a way better job
(also pic in low light are horrible....)
Same problem. I saw that Huawei phones even if you disable all the features they try to push it back on. Like
The camera settings even if you turn the beauty off it will do a some kind of beauty auto
The sound you can't turn the dolby off is always on
The brightness if you untick auto if you restart auto is coming back
