Good News on UFS 3.0 - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

Really good news about the speed. My desktop drive is NVMe 970 am wondering how fast, between them two, will transfer go 'thru USB 3.1

Uploaded the note 9 for comparison. Soooo much slower!

I believe the UFS 3.0 on Note 10 will provide about twice the performance of the storage. Comparing to Note 9/S10 devices: Sequential read should be double and sequential write few hundreds more.

SanDisk Extreme Pro microSDHC

Have a Verizon Galaxy Note 3 and reformatted my SanDisk 16GB Class 4 microSDHC that I had for my old phone to utilize with my new powerhouse. Upon taking pictures, I was not thrilled at all with the "Processing" time it was taking between shots. Purchased a SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro microSDHC and did not notice any difference in processing time. Downloaded app "A1 SD Bench" and results from the test were Read speed of 21.48MB/s and write speed of 18.16MB/s. I can't seem to get a definitive answer if the Note 3 is UHS-1 compatible. If it is, I wonder if anyone else has achieved satisfactory results with the pairing of these to or if I am looking at a bunk card.
The processing bit appears when using "Smart Stabilisation". Turn it off and it should be instant. Also, afaik Note 3 doesn't support UHS-1.
I used a UHS-1 64GB with my note 2 and S 3 but unfortunately it died and I'm in the RMA process. But the card does work and at least in Note 2 there was no noticeable lag. Once I get my new card I'll try out that app.

I'll try shutting that part off and see if it makes a difference.

Interesting. I have heard people that have stated that these higher speed cards have worked well in their Note 2s and I wonder why they would work in the Note 2s and not the Note 3.

Ok, but have you tested your speed on your card(s) to find if they were anywhere near the advertised speed? Trying to see if going to Class 10 was overkill.

with a USB 3.0 reader, the Extreme Plus numbers were near or better than the advertised speeds. The Ultra was less than 30MB/s (which is the advertised speed)
Won't much of a difference within the phone since the phone doesn't support UHS-I
Currently running a Sandisk 32gb Class 4 and no issues here as I save my pics into the internal memory and move over if required. Might go class 10 when the 64gb becomes cheaper.

So is the Note 2 UHS-1 compatible? I have seen some crazy speed screen shots on the read/write speed for Note 2s and I am confused as to why.

Many people don't realize that there are no phone that support UHS I, and the advertised speed is mainly for PC, or supported card reader.
I have tested most of these cards with a kingston reader that support UHS I, and the outcome is same or better the advertised speed.

I have a Lexar 64gb. All i ever got for speed was in the low 20's as well. The packaging says 90 mb/s and 600x but as mentioned already, that would only happen in the Lexar laboratory. I just got the card so I wouldn't have to be constantly moving the pic/videos to my computer

So I'm looking to purchase a 64GB Micro SD from Amazon for my Z2. Which one among these would you rank the best?

I have both the 64 GB Sandisk Extreme Plus and the 64 GB Samsung Pro. The only 633x card I don't have is the Lexar.
The Sandisk Extreme Plus is a bit quicker on reads (65MB/s) but a bit slower on writes (30MB/s)
The Samsung comes in at 50MB/s, sometimes getting up to 60MB/s on reads and consistently gets +40MB/s on writes, the quickest I've seen is about 45MB/s
These figures were tested using A1SD bench in phone, (Z2 seems to have an excellent SD card controller) these cards go much faster using a proper USB3 converter into a computer. The Samsung sustains a steady 70MB/s write speed and the Sandisk comes in at about 60MB/s write when tested in Windows 8.1
The Ultra is definitely a large step below, and the 128GB Ultra card is even slower.
With that said, I like the Samsung Pro and it's what I use in my device.

It seems as though the S5 (and definitely the S4 before it) suffers from a slower SD memory controller. I was actually surprised the Z2 could pull off the numbers it did, they are very fast speeds. I will say on the S5, if they're getting lower numbers, it's not because it's memory card limited. Both the Sandisk Extreme Plus and Samsung Pro UHS-1 cards are excellent and you really can't make a bad decision.

I was thinking about the Sandisk Extreme Plus 64 GB and Sandisk Ultra 128 GB but since I'm not using that much apps as I did on my 64 GB iPhone I decided to get the Extreme Plus also because of the huge difference in read/write speeds compared to the Ultra.
I didn't experienced any problems with the card. The only disadvantage is that I cannot use it in my tiny thumb drive since it only supports microSDHC but in fact I never needed it yet since Android supports MSC and with the tiny USB-microUSB cable that came with the SWR10 SmartBand everything is fine

There is Sandisk Ultra 128GB and Extreme 64GB and Extreme Plus 64GB. I believe the card reader on z2 should not support the Extreme Plus speed(80MB/s read & write) so you just need to get an Extreme 64GB(40MB/s read & write). The Ultra ver should be around 40MB/s read with only 10MB/s write.
Basically, the read speed on z2 on Ultra/Ext/ExtP is just about the same, the huge different is only at write speed. If budget isn't a concern and think about future upgrade like z3/z4 probably would support higher speed, you can just get the Extreme Plus.
How do you all use it?.....fat32 or is it working with ntfs?

Exfat is great, mines a 64gb Samsung evo. But you wont be able to see it in certain ROMS.
The ones that I tested were:
-CM11 Sabermod
-PA Sabermod
-CrDroid
-Vanir? (I think.)
All the rest work fine with it (for me) including stock and stock based ROM's.
Ok thanks for the info, right now I'm with stock rom and working fine.

I have the Sandisk Extreme Plus 64GB, the Ultra 128GB and Samsung Pro 64GB. Benched all three and the Ultra is definitely the slowest by a good margin. The Sandisk Extreme Plus was slightly quicker on reads than the Samsung (50Mbps read / 40 Mbps write) , but the Samsung was a bit quicker on writes (45Mbps read / 45 Mbps write). The Samsung seemed to be more consistent as well. This was using A1 SD Bench. Not going to swap out cards and run them all again so you'll just have to take my word for it.

What sd card should I get?

I'm looking for either a 128gb or 256gb micro sd card and I want to have the same experience as using the internal storage for recording 4k/superslowmo and using apps on sd cards.
But I don't want to overspend either, I don't know up to what speeds/classes the phone can utilize.
There's cards like Samsung evo plus 128gb for 60euro, cards like lexar 1000x 128gb at 95 euro with UHS II Bus all kinds of things I got lost in the sea of classes and speeds.
What cards did you guys get and can anyone recommend me something?
I use sandisk ultra 200 gb and no problem @all with 4k

that was the fastest card available when I bought it, nothing was faster with high storage. I see 256gb cards now but haven't really looked into any or the specs
I got Samsung Evo+ 128 GB UHS-I U3 (100 MB/s read, 90 MB/s write) for 55 euros (just google MB-MC128GA/EU - NL Samsung site for this card) . There is also 128 GB Adata Premier One UHS-II with read 275 MB/s, write 155 MB/s for ~150 USD. 256 GB version is for 289 USD (amazon) - dunno why, but in Czech it is for ~210$ ^^. In your case, I would go for Samsung

I'm disappointed with XZP's sdcard access speeds, especially when the sdcard encryption is enabled. With my Samsung Evo+ 256Gb I got the following speeds:

Have you tried any other micro SDs or just the Samsung Evo+? I was thinking about getting the 2017 one, Samsung Evo Plus 256GB, but it seems like it will probably be the same, I think the only difference between that 2016 version is 10MB/s on Read speed. Would be interesting to see if certain cards do better than others, I would like to know if a A1 rated card also has this problem.
Hey guys. Thanks for all the helpful input. What would you say is the primary benefit of the additional storage of a 128GB to 256GB SD Card? I feel like on other phones without expandable memory, I never really reach capacity on 64GB models. So I probably used more cloud storage out of necessity and just got used to it. What are you guys using all this glorious storage for?

4k por... Oops I mean scientific ebooks etc.
All jokes aside... Having that bit of extra storage can give you the freedom to record, capture and download as you please!
Especially for people like me who hardly use online storage. I have the Samsung Evo Plus 256gb (2017 version) and I have so many 4k HDR10 movies and documentaries stored on it. I also dont have to worry about running out of space by constantly shooting 4k videos.
Having higher storage takes away all the limitations of having to transfer your files whenever you need to download new material.
I'm getting 72mb/read and 40mb/write even though the Micro SD card is capable of achieving higher speeds. This is due to the phone and I hope that android will find a way around this with upcoming updates, unless it's a hardware issue of course.
These speeds are more than enough for regular everyday use as I haven't faced any issues with reading/writing colossal files.
Hope this helps

Multitasking/RAM

You're busy and don't have time to wait, which is why you need to stop reading this thread and get back to organizing your Pogs. Rate this thread to express how the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 performs when multitasking. A higher rating indicates that the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 keeps many apps in memory so that they don't need to reload, and that when moving between apps, transitions are smooth and performance is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Multitasking 6GB RAM Model
I generally don't let things get out of hand, but I've had no problem running lots of apps on the phone and in DeX mode to a 4K TV with a USB mouse and keyboard, and still running nicely.
If anyone find 6 vs 8gb note comparison video, please share. I'd like to see is there any improvement in keeping apps in background on 8gb model.

Compared to other devices I've used, the 8gb Note 9 I'm using is a world of difference. It seems like Samsung nailed it with the way this phone handles having a ton of apps running at the same time. It smoothly transitions between whatever apps I want to use with seemingly no impact to performance

Whatsapp
Adobe acrobat reader
Uc browser
1mg
Microsoft authenticator
Marvel contest of champions
Es file explorer to copy files from my ntfs hard drive

6 is plenty. I have the 6gig and only keep 3-4 open. It works great. I wanted the 8gig but after looking at a bunch of reviews I couldn't justify getting the 8gig for my type of usage. I don't play any games. Jist YouTube. Text. Browser. Music and a bit of social.

I switched from the s7e exynos to the note 9 exynos. I can tell you from my experience that it's smoother, faster, better to hold in hands without a case, better camera, better audio from speakers/headphones, a lot better battery life and so on + the new one UI shapes to be great too (android P). The difference is there and the phone better + I have the 6GB variant and this + software optimisations leads to quite good RAM management, it's vastly better than the s7e - will recommend you to get the 6GB version if you don't need the 512GB onboard storage (you can put fast sd card for videos/photos on the 128GB model if needed).

Thx man and about storage i dont have an issue as my s7 already have so much space left i think 128gb will be enough also i am just stopping myself from buying it right now cos in india 5g will come in 2019 and note 9 dont have it so i will be paying a huge price for a phone that dont support it ( s10 may support 5g)

Agree, 128GB is plenty. If you can wait, do so for the s10 is my advice (or 2019 phones in general). Otherwise you will not be dissapointed from the note 9.

WIll buy something in april nxy yr lets see what comes next

Micro sd speed on Tab S7/S7 Plus (An issue?)

So slow according to normal. What is your micro sd card speed on your Tab s7/s7+? (Same micro sd on windows or android device has 90MB/s read speed and 55 MB/s write speed. I'm using Samsung Evo Plus White series)

What brand are you using? Not all microSD cards are equal. Especially, since there are several knock offs on Amazon. I have a Samsung 512GB EVO microSD card in mine and I don't encounter any speed problems.

Could you test with this app?
A1 SD Bench - Apps on Google Play
Benchmark SD card to test IO read / write speed and check media performance.
play.google.com
I'm getting about the same. Did you encrypt your card? Mine is encrypted.
Encryption slows read/write speeds because it has to decrypt/encrypt when reading or writing.
I don't see any real world affects on performance.

Real world performance affected so much. Just try to write any files.

How big are the files? How are you transferring them? Via USB from Mac/PC to the card in the tablet? Or from internal memory to the card?
If the former, your read/write speeds are going to be slower because you have to take into account the limitations of the USB cable and the bus speed from the USB ports on your computer and the bus speeds from the USB port to the card. Each transfer point is a place where it will slow down. If it is the latter, then your limited by the bus speed between internal memory and the card.
In either case, you will probably never reach the full read/write speed potential of the card. Even if you were to use a faster card, it won't improve your speeds all that much.
Internal memory to sd card or via usb or via otg doesn't matter.

Sorry for the slow response. In both cases you are subject to the internal bus limitations as well as card limitations.
Think of it as flying from New York to LA with a stop in Dallas. All three airports are big and the planes are fast, but in all three cases you are slowed down. You have to wait in line to get through security and get on the plane, then wait to take off, then wait for the plane to get to its gate in Dallas, etc. Each point is a bottleneck.
The point being is that anytime you have to transfer from one medium to another the transfer point will be the bottleneck. There isn't much that you can do to speed it up. Getting an even faster microSD card will not improve your performance by much.

Bro you don't understand me.
Same micro sd(Plane)
in Windows Notebook ----Read 90 Mb/s Write 55Mb/s
in Poco X3 pro ---- Read 75 Mb/s Write 45 Mb/s
in Tab S7 ---- Read 20Mb/s Write 13Mb/s

Yes, I did. You are comparing three DIFFERENT devices with three DIFFERENT bus architectures. Comparing your Windows notebook, Poco X2 Pro and Tab S7 is not an apple to apple to apple comparison. It is an apple to banana to orange comparison.
I got the same read/write speeds you did on my Tab S7. If I were to clock it on my Surface Pro 6 or Dell desktop, I would probably get similar speeds as you did on your Windows notebook. The bus speed of the Tab S7 is the culprit and getting a faster card will give you a negligible increase.

Yep different devices but Poco's(Xxiaomi) medicore device three times faster than Samsung's high level device. Is this normal?
i just discovered if i eject micro sd card from tab s7 and than plug again. Than I tested micro sd card. Speed similar to Poco X3 pro. But some time later (about hours) micro sd card speed slowing down.

Yeah. That is weird. I could be the OS deprioritizing the microSD reader to save battery. But that is just a guess. As far as the differences between the Poco S2 and the Tab S7, one is a phone the other a tablet; both have different use case scenarios which drives the different design philosophies, which drives the actual design and component selection.
