Note 10 Display Discussion - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Guides, News, & Discussion

I have both the note 10 and 10+. I was thinking of returning the 10+ due to size but I wanted to do a screen test comparison.
I'm using display tester from the app store and i'm using the "banding, contrast, saturation" test, here are my results,
Note 10
Note 10+
On the Note 10 you can't see anything past 6, whereas on the Note 10+ you can see right down to 2 and even sort of make out what 1 is supposed to look like.
I was wondering if anyone with a Note 10 would be able to run the test and let me know if this is just display lottery, if so I need to return this ASAP and get a new one.
Both phones brightness set to 100% and both screens are set to Natural

How to do the test. I have note 10

I did the same test on Note 10 and resutls are the same, last visible square is #7. App on playstore is called "Display Tester".
Now I know why I see so prominent black crush when watching youtube videos, I don't see a **** in dark scenes even on high brightness, this display is huge fail.

There's an app on the Play store called display tester. Pick the "Banding, contrast, saturation" test then swipe until you get to the 3rdv test called black saturation test

I have the note 10+ and there's no black crush at all on low levels. Tough pill to swallow because I really like the size and feel like the regular 10

I have note 10 and just run the test, same after 7 below all black

Just got my Note 10, and once I've the time for playing with it - I'll take a lock at the whole "display quality-lottery" thing myself.
It could just be a bad batch of units, or a lack of proper quality control. I mean, this issue haven't been mentioned in anyone of the various posted reviews on internet so..
It needs further investigation.

Nothing is visible past #7 either.

Apparently the screen isn't the same as the Note 5

The Note 7 has a better screen than the Note 5 and the S7 edge (and every other phone) in just about every category, apparently:

1000 nits? I kinda doubt that.
Galaxy Note 7 screen considered the best by DisplayMate
Seems that this isn't the same screen as the G7. Here is a portion of what DisplayMate said:
"It shouldn’t come as a surprise then that the upcoming Galaxy Note7 has surpassed the Galaxy S7 series to feature the best smartphone display available in the market right now. According to DisplayMate’s President Raymond Soneira, the Galaxy Note7’s display is so impressive that it’s almost futuristic:
Since the Note series generally leads in display technology, the Note 7 should really have been called the Note 8 so that its name will be in better sync with the future Galaxy S8.
The analysis shows that the Note7’s display outperformed the Note5 and the Galaxy S7 in almost every display lab test. With its maximum brightness of 1,000 nits, Note7 has the brightest smartphone display ever, and its reflectance measures at 4.6%, one of the lowest ever tested by DisplayMate."

That's interesting. The HDR thing alone would make a difference, I would think. And the brightness they made seem like a huge difference. Crazy.

Its actually an interesting read... I recommend it..at least skim it. A few take aways from it.
There are dual ambient sensors, front and back, to better approximate the needed screen brightness, and the formula that those 2 sensors goes with creates a more gentle pleasing transition. (personally I don't use auto, because if you move the phone over a little the screen changes brightness, even if the overall room hasn't change brightness, you are just casting a small shadow.
There is a learning auto setting for brightness, that's kinda cool. walk into a dark room and turn you brightness up instead of down... (ok, why?) it will learn over time and adjust up rather than down. It will make other auto adjustments as it learns how you like your screen. Awesome.
Brightness over 1000 nits... whatever, spec wise, but the comment that coupled with the lowest reflectivity, and the highest contrast levels, this is the best sunlight viewing screen ever made.... awesome.
As for the screen quality... if every device's screen is slightly better than the previous version, then over time you get huge increases in screen quality, and efficiency. This is definitely not the same screen as the s7, or the Note 5. Specs on the surface may line up, but they did more engineering on it than just plop an old screen into a new device.

Same. I compared them side by side in Best Buy and the screens looked freaking identical in terms of brightness, white balance, color, everything. Maybe there are improvements, but if there are, they are too small to be noticeable without special testing equipment. With every new Samsung phone, DisplayMate says the screen is way better than the previous version, but honestly, Samsung's screens have hardly improved at all since the Note 4. I'm sure if you held a Note 4 and Note 7 side by side you could see some very minor differences, but if you disguised the phones and just looked at each screen seperately I don't think you could tell which is which.

I wouldn't say it's an independent study. That would imply that Samsung and DisplayMate are not working together. DisplayMate makes money by helping companies calibrate their displays. Many people have suspected that DisplayMate actually has a role in the calibration of Samsung's displays. So if Samsung is one of DisplayMate's clients and Samsung is paying them, AND DisplayMate is actually testing the calibration that they themselves were responsible for, then they aren't exactly going to be unbiased and give themselves and their client a bad review.
Guys, if you actually look at the numbers DisplayMate posted and compare them to the Note 5 and S7, it becomes obvious that the Note 7 does NOT have a better screen. It is most likely the same screen with a slightly tweaked firmware that allows it to ramp up brightness a little bit more when only 1% of the screen is turned on. It's pure marketing trickery. Just look at these numbers I pulled from DisplayMate and then tell me how much better the Note 7 screen actually is (hint: it's not better):
Average Screen Reflectance
Note 5: 4.7%
Galaxy S7: 4.6%
Note 7: 4.6%
All three are basically the same and within the margin of error.
Measured Full Brightness - 100% Full Screen White
Note 5: 412 nits
Galaxy S7: 414 nits
Note 7: 418 nits
All three are basically the same and within the margin of error.
Measured Full Brightness - 50% Full Screen White
Note 5: 456 nits
Galaxy S7: 458 nits
Note 7: 495 nits
The Note 7 is ever so slightly brighter, but it probably isn’t noticeable.
Measured Auto Brightness - 100% Full Screen White, High Ambient Light
Note 5: 556 nits
Galaxy S7: 549 nits
Note 7: 569 nits
All three are basically the same and within the margin of error.
*Note: The 1048 nit brightness that is being quoted by various news outlets is with only 1% of the screen lit up. I didn’t show the 1% full white screen benchmarks because they are useless. How often is only 1% of your screen lit up? If you absolutely must do the comparison, the Note 5 and S7 reach 861 and 855 nits in the same useless scenario.
Color temperature in Basic / sRGB mode (closest to 6500K is best)
Note 5: 6588K
Galaxy S7: 6480K
Note 7: 6400K
All three are basically the same and within the margin of error, but the Note 7 is actually the worst here.
Wide Color gamut - Adaptive Display mode (larger % means it can display more colors)
Note 5: 134% sRGB
Galaxy S7: 131% sRGB
Note 7: 132% sRGB
All three are basically the same and within the margin of error, but the Note 5 is actually the best here.
Color Accuracy in Basic / sRGB mode (lower JNDC is more accurate)
Note 5: 1.4 JNDC
Galaxy S7: 1.5 JNDC
Note 7: 2.9 JNDC
The Note 5 and S7 are basically the same and within the margin of error, but the Note 7 is actually quite a bit LESS accurate, although you would be hard pressed to notice with the naked eye.
Relative Power Efficiency (50% Average Picture Level at 456 nits)
Note 5: 0.95 watts
S7: 0.80 watts
Note 7: 0.97 watts
The Note 5 and Note 7 are basically the same and within the margin of error, but the Note 7 nevertheless uses slightly MORE power and is a little less efficient. The S7 screen uses less power just because it’s smaller, not because it’s more efficient.

the note 5 was never released here so I can't compare, but comparing my note 4 with a display model note 7 (SM-N930X) at max "normal" brightness(so no Sun mode) the difference is quite noticeable.

Color saturation & accuracy

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
It would also be helpful if people posting in here would compare the Note 9's color accuracy to the S9/S9+ and/or of course the Note 8 too.
I'm so tired of Samsung inconsistencies with screen colors. Note 9 On top and note 8on bottom. To me the note 8 seems to have the better cleaner whites. The note 9 seems to be pushing a dirty white even compared to my iPhone x. Setting to maximum brightness indoors the iPhone x gets the brightest.
I got my Note 9 yesterday and I immediately noticed that my Note 8 has more vibrant colors. Note 9 seems slightly washed out compared to it. All settings are exactly the same on both phones.
So how are these getting rated as the most amazing, accurate screen ever? It clearly isn't based on the images in this thread... Or are these just isolated cases?
I think the "Basic" setting looks pretty good. The default "Adaptive" mode is terrible. WAY oversaturated.

Yeah... This is kinda annoying. I don't recall my S8 doing this anywhere near as bad.
I noticed the colors didn't pop and weren't overly vibrant like my S8. The Note 9 I believe are much more true and accurate.
I came from using an LG V20 for just over a year and a half. The screen on that one wasn't bad but the burn in was unreal after about 6 months of using it. I have to say that I love this Note 9 screen, it's sad to hear some users say the Note 8's is better

I don't agree with some of the users here. I got both phones, and believe me the Note 9 screen is better than the Note 8, not enough to blow the Note 8 out of the water but it is better.
Both phones are amazing pieces of technology, and any one can be happy with either of them, but to say that the Note 8 has better display is very inaccurate.

Fingers crossed it was because my n8 screen was more "aged" that it looked better. Either way, it is what it is. Now I just compared my old note 8 and my wife's note 8 to my note 9 screen again.
When comparing the brightness slider bar on the note 8 compared to the note 9, the note 8 appears to be much brighter with same screen mod and given slider values than the note 9. Even turned fully up to Max brightness the note 8 was brighter.
Someone also who has an n8 should compare.. I just compared two note 8s to my note 9.

Well, in auto brightness mode, the Note9 is brighter than iPhoneX. But of course you have to test it under direct light.

Pixel 3 / 3XL Screens are NOT equal

I'm not trying to start a pixel flame war, but I'm standing in front of multiple pixel 3 devices and it's very easy to see they have two different color temperatures. The difference isn't as noticeable in photos though.
Granted, they still look 2 times better than last year, but the regular 3 clearly has a warmer temp and greater color shift when viewed off axis.
How did a room full of tech experts miss this at the Google event?!
so whats your point?
It's possible it was just those 2 devices. Not every display is exactly the same, even on same phones.
I am curious is if you checked to see if the brightness levels were the same?

It was consistent on the multiple devices they had on display.
I also checked display brightness and color settings as you can see in the pictures. Like I said, the difference is more obvious in person and I'm shocked no tech reviewers have mentioned it. I've even noticed it while watching YouTube videos with reviewers holding the devices side by side.

That's the same video that caught my eye. Matthew Moniz has a video about the notch that shows both phones with two different temperatures as well. He doesn't mention it either. I am hoping Erica Griffin does a test on it, but she topically only buys the larger version...
Coming from the 2 XL, my main concern is that it's better than that panel. If it is, then I'm happy.
To me, that notch is still enough to make me avoid the 3 XL even if it has slight better color temperature. There's always gonna be something better, bright, whiter, whatever. I'm looking at the overall package at this point in the game and the regular 3 is the better compromise for me.
I went to the Verizon store today and also noticed a difference in the color temperature of the displays. But I could've sworn the XL had the warmer panel. I'm sure there a ton of variability between screens even among the same model especially so soon after release. Not a big deal but I liked the XL screen a bit better especially when watching media. To my eyes the difference between 1080 and 1440 is noticeable. The regular 3 screen is also much smaller than I thought it would be. I figured it'd be pretty close to my Samsung Galaxy S8 but it's a good deal smaller. So I cancelled my Pixel 3 pre-order and went for the XL.

Yes, the display on both models is considerably better than the pixel 2 series. I wonder if anyone could compare them to the OG pixels? I loved their screens.
I watch a lot of videos on the net and I realize as the screen of Google pixel 3 to a pink tint ??
I cancelled Pixel 3 and ordered Pixel 3 XL.
Hi, I really hesitate between the two versions now.
I took a fairly janky photo the other day at the Verizon store and the screens looked identical. Both phones in max brightness, adaptive color setting. They looked identical (that's why I took the photo). Unfortunately I couldn't move then from their secure displays, and actually was quite a bit off center for the pixel 3 because another customer wanted to spend 30 minutes with then like I was . The demo models had a purple-and-yellow gradient background image on them, which also looked identical on each phone. I couldn't actually handheld the devices at the time, though, so it's hard to get a good comparison, but the screens looked really great regardless. I'm not worried in the slightest at this point. We'll see if the internet starts up a new conspiracy about screen issues, though.
I looked at the 3/3Xl side by side in 2 different stores yesterday. The smaller one is definitely warmer .. looks more saturated.
Made sure both were at 100 % brightness. No adaptive brightness. Adaptive display color more on both.
Both looked very nice compared to my 2XL.. but the smaller one did look like it had its saturation turned to 11.

My concern is that the whites are just not as white on the regular pixel 3 and it will effect how we perceive the image quality of the photos we take. I make quick edits on my phone using Snapseed all the time, and I don't want it to look different than what I expect.
Well as mentioned in another thread here (the iFixit teardown), the smaller's display is LG while the XL is Samsung.
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Google+Pixel+3+Teardown/113763
Bummer... time to wait for more reviews to see differences.
I just received my Pixel 3 and compared it to my 2XL, and I'm so glad I did because I was ready to jump the gun and assume it was a horrible display as soon as I found out it was made by LG. I don't know how it personally compares to the Pixel XL 3, but the Pixel 3's screen is just flat out better when compared to my Pixel 2XL. The viewing angles are vastly better. There isn't a huge color shift when tilted. The colors seem significantly more vibrant. There seems to be less black crush (not perfect).
I was really considering returning my Pixel 3 until I compared the display to my Pixel 2XL. Man, I am glad I did, because I often found that my 2 XL with a case+whitedome screen protector were way too heavy and nearly impossible to use one handed. To be fair, I also prefer smaller phones. I would've bought the Pixel 2 instead of the 2XL if they had just maintained the same design. And I definitely loved my og Pixel over the og Pixel XL.
A small update -
I visited a Verizon store yesterday, and it does seem that the screens are different in temperature. The 3 had a bit cooler temp than the 3XL, but they both looked amazing. I set them both on the 3 color modes and they were a tiny bit different than one another, but again they are both really nice and look calibrated well.
I'm still on LG G4, which has an amazing screen (LCD though), and the two pixels are amazing, compared.

Colours are dull

Anyone know how to increase the saturation of the display? The display looks quite dull compared to oneplus 6, galaxy s9 and iPhone x. Had them all side by side. I'm always finding I have to increase the saturation of photos too after taking them to match the colours in scene cause they are clearly muted. If you transfer the unedited photos taken on the mate 20 pro to another phone or computer, they look fine. So glad it's not the camera, just seems to be the display having poor vibrancy. And yes my display is set on vivid in settings.
Would like to know if others have noticed this as I checked out another mate 20 pro on display in a shop and seemed to have the same problem
Try settings - display - colour and eye comfort
I don't find them dull myself but a change in settings could help.
Yeah is on vivid in settings ?
Even my pixel 2 XL looks much more vibrant! It's lovely to pick up and use after the M20Pro. I have BOE screen

Interesting, seems to be some major inconsistencies then with this phone. Samsung phones I find over saturated so I can only imagine. I have a green LG screen atm and didn't want to switch to a boe cause I heard the LG display was more vivid than the BOE and I'm finding the saturation on my LG display already so poor so couldnt imagine what it would be like on a BOE screen.
The screen is fine. Seems people are just opening threads now to make baseless accusations against the phone because it's so much better than the competition.
I have Pixel 3 and Mate 20 pro, and just sold my Note 9 and while the whites aren't as blinding as the Note 9 , the saturation is just fine. The Pixel 3 on adaptive is too saturated and the photos from the camera are just fine.
Bringing up the saturation in the camera photos to match the scene? please.
I would advise the op to sell it and get a Pixel.

I've used the ASUS ROG Phone 3 for ~1 month, so Ask Me Anything!

Hi XDA,
ASUS announced the ROG Phone 3 earlier today. I reviewed the phone for the XDA Portal after having used it for nearly a month (I received it on June 26th and published my review on July 22nd.) The phone has a metric ton of features, so if you have any specific questions about the ROG Phone 3, feel free to ask me a question. I'll enable notifications for new replies in this thread so I'll answer them as they come in.
I recommend reading the following posts first to see if they answer any of your questions:
Our launch coverage: ASUS launches the ROG Phone 3 with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, 144Hz display, and 6000mAh battery
My review: ASUS ROG Phone 3 Review: The King of Gaming Smartphones is back
I have also answered a few questions about the phone already on Reddit.
Hi and thanks for the review.
So I have had Rog 2 since the launch and although it's great overall, it has some big issues on display side and I want to know if rog 3 also suffers from the same issues.
1.the first issue that almost everyone knows about is the gray color turning to reddish color on lower brightness levels especially on 120hz. You'll have to test this with gray color background in a dark room but I can notice it even in a normal lit room.
2. the screen is kind of grainy and has a lot of bandings. you can also test this by downloading a 5% gray picture and turn the brightness all the way down in a completely dark room and look for oled bandings and lines and grainyness!
3. Huge Black crush! If you search google for "black crush test" the first result is a reddit question that leads to a video of a test picture. On rog 2 only and only on 100% brightness all the squares up to 5 are visible but as we turn down the brightness almost all squares become black (although they actually should be gray) and we can only see the first three squares at the bottom.(255% 100% and 50%)
and that means if we want to see everything in true color and we are supposed to see, we have to use 100% brightness all the time which not only hurts the eyes, but also brings screen burn-ins in as soon as 3 2 months.
Here's the youtube link for black crush test

I hope you can check these issues and give us real life feedback
thanks

I am also interested in knowing abot this , and also if there is image retention at High brightness, can be checked by staying at a static page for 1mint or more the quick switching to to a gray image , like the chrome in dark mode with all tabs closed , I take I screenshot of it an zoom it and out it into full screen that time I can see the ghost image of previously shown page
I'm really interested in the acoustics/ speaker volume - how does this aspect compare to other current flagships & also specifically to ROG 2??
Thanks.

1. I do not see any reddish tint on gray colors in low brightness levels in low ambient lighting. I tested at 144Hz, 1-20% brightness, dark room, and with the Reddit is Fun app set to a dark gray background.
2. I looked up a 5% grain photo and found a video on YT. At the minimum brightness wherein the picture becomes visible to my eye in a dark room, there's uneven graininess. Raising the brightness a bit and I can see horizontal banding. No issues at higher brightnesses, though.
3. Similar result on the ROG Phone 3, sadly.

No, the ROG Phone 3 does not support motion estimation/motion compensation, or MEMC, as it's called on the OnePlus 8 Pro or OPPO Find X2 Pro. The OnePlus 8 Pro and OPPO Find X2 Pro can do hardware-accelerated MEMC thanks to a dedicated display processor called the Iris 5, designed by a company called Pixelworks. More details on that here: https://www.xda-developers.com/pixe...ssor-android-display-experience-oppo-find-x2/

I don't see any obvious image retention at high brightnesses.

It's actually not quite as loud as the ROG Phone II. Still gets very loud in comparison to most devices, though. I've mentioned all the audio features that ASUS and Dirac added to the ROG Phone 3 in my review. You can thankfully tweak the speaker quality a bit with the 7-band equalizer and Bass/Treble slider in AudioWizard.
So based on your information, Im deciding to keep my rog2 for another year and see what 2021 brings us.
Hopefully an LCD gaming device or a high quality oled one.
Thank you for your answer
Can you please show the air triggers and how you can use them if you have that on hand?
So little people touch on this feature or expand on how it's used and I'm very curious as the rog 2 I have has had beta gestures forever.

I posted extensively about the AirTriggers in my review. What more do you want to know?
1)is there FM radio
2) Is 3rd party application shown on always on display
Can the AirTrigger functions be mapped for usage in other non-game Apps/ functions (including torch/ camera/ audio player etc)?
If not possible in stock, will custom ROMs (if they happen for ROG 3) be able to re-map AirTrigger functions?

Yes, you can set AirTriggers to work in non-gaming apps. I just mapped the left/right shoulder buttons to previous/next in Google Play Music. One problem: the stock camera app can't be added to ArmouryCrate. Further, when I added GCam, the camera viewfinder was totally black when I launched it. I suspect that the camera is being blocked by the overlay in some way.
The sound system benefits (volume/ bass/ enhancements etc) are only during gaming, or throughout general usage of phone (calls/ music/ videos)?
Thanks for the awesome review
Could u plz tell the following

Already answered in post #6 towards the end.....
I have been a loyal Pixel customer until now. I love my Pixel 4 XL, which is working very well. However, I am blown away by the ROG 3 specs. I am especially attracted to the display and the audio in addition to the fast performance. I have three questions for you i
1) What was your experience like with the display. Will it blow the Pixel 4 XL out of the water?
2) What was your experience with the performance like in comparison to other phones?
3) Is Asus good about updates ( yearly system updates as well as security updates on a monthly basis)?
Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my questions.

Hello, I don't play games on mobile at all yet I'm considering buying this phone simply because of the huge battery and speaker setup as those are the most important for me.
Do you think I should go for it?

I got the ROG Phone 2 for that same reason, and I can tell you that you won't be disappointed. You can go for the ROG Phone 3 for with the same results. Only difference there is that there is no built in headphone jack. I came from the OP7 Pro, so the only thing you'll miss is the higher quality display.
