Video focus hunting / Camera keeps refocusing while filming - Honor 10 Questions & Answers

Hello,
My wife's been having a Honor 10 (COL-L29) for a little over half a year. Everything fine except the camera is constantly hunting for focus. Every few seconds it is refocusing by moving the lens from close-up to infinite and back to correct focus. I've tried it with the latest camera included in software v9.1.0.326 but also with a random 3rd party app. You can clearly hear the focusing camera elements moving.
The most annoying part is during video recording. And since we have a 7 month old baby, she's filming him a lot.
I've tried searching online but nobody seems to have complained about something similar until now.
My OnePlus 5 doesn't do the same thing in the same environment, so I cannot blame some colors, textures or similar.
Will also try posting on honor/Huawei forums in a moment.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated!

yeah, I got that problem too..... a bit annoying. Maybe I did not realize, but as far as I remember.....it was not happened on EMUI 8.1. The problem starts after updating to EMUI 9.

Yeah I've had this to after the last software upgrade.

I've been chatting with a support rep today.
Interestingly, she talked like she was aware of the problem (she immediately recognised what I was thinking about) and she asked me when did the problem appeared (like it was introduced by an update).
Clearing the camera's and the phone's cache didn't help. I was thinking of checking out if another phone has the same issue (if I can still find one on display).
Otherwise the rep advised me to go to a service center or contact the seller.

Huawei has released a patch pack that seems to solve this problem for Honor 10 in China (COL-AL00 COL-AL10 COL-TL00 COL-TL10). I guess the oversea version is on it's way

Im in the UK and I'm already on .326

I have the same problem and running .326 version .
Glad that i am not the only one.
I found out that if after u ar starting a video and manually do a focus with one finger it stops hunting focusing after.
I first discovered the problem after upgrading to emui 9.1.
Hope this will help others!

I was to the service center some 4-5 days ago. The guy there took a look at the phone, I showed him the issue and he acknowledged it. He ordered a new camera module, a mainboard and something else (I didn't understood what he said): I'm waiting for a call from the service center for the actual parts replacement.

So after what u said then this is a hardware problem not a software problem and i should find the nearest shop and have look!
I'm afraid that it's 400 km from me the neareast shop.

I don't know what it is. I am checking for a new software version on a daily basis (until I'm called that the parts arrived).
I only reported back what the dude from the official service center told me.

please don't forget to let us know how it goes with the new hardware....

So yesterday afternoon got the parts exchanged: mainboard, cameras & back plate. Apparently the back plate cannot be glued back upon removal. The whole thing took some 3.5 hours.
Weirdly the mainboard came with some version 8.1.0.1xx EMUI. I don't know if it was preinstalled of the service tech guy flashed after assembling the phone.
The problem is gone but I cannot say for sure if it is the old software or the new hardware.
When trying to update the software (before restoring with HiSuite) I only got a small version bump (still 8.1.0.1xx). HiSuite was proposing me an update but didn't take it. I want to film something, update, film the same again all while the phone is on a tripod pointing exactly at the same scene.

I just got a new Honor 10, a week ago. I made all the EMUI updates before testing the camera. I noticed the horrible focus in and out problem, and I was prepared to send it back to the seller. After I searched a bit, I found this thread and I realized it may not be a hardware problem, but a software problem. I'm now downgrading to EMUI 9.0 and hooping the HiSuite allows me to downgrade later to 8.1 to test if the problem disappears. BTW, the post processing of the photos in low light is also horrible, especially with people's faces. But I want to keep the phone because of the size, price and specs.
Do you have any more information about your case? Had you the opportunity to do the tests with 9.1?

I haven't update it yet. My wife keeps on postponing it.
Right now it is on 8.1.0.104 and it wants to install 8.1.0.151.
The problem seems to be almost gone, except for critical situations (carpet with high contrast pattern), but even then it is barely noticeable.
It will stay on this software for the time being...

I have an update on my side. I downgraded to 9.0 and I still had the problem. But when I downgraded to 8.1 the problem simply disappeared! I'm using the build ending in 151, so I think you can upgrade to that version with no problem. If you upgrade to 9.0 and the problem continues, just make a backup before upgrade, and then you can downgrade to 8.1 again and restore with HiSuite (very simple and fast do downgrade).
When you have the problem, you can "fix" it downgrading to 8.1 with HiSuite, but we don't know why some people have the problem, and apparently a lot of people don't have the problem at all. If your works now with 9.0 or 9.1, it probably have something to do with some hardware change in the Honor 10 production that caused the problem.

anyone tried other camera app? I'm gonna try Open Camera

I've tried some random app. I don't remember the name, but the behaviour was the same.
I've mentioned this in the initial post.

I seems that I only have de problem with 9.1 (in the 2 version available). I 'm testing 9.0 and it seems ok.

Ghosting effect seen on all dark screens

I sent my 5x to the factory for repair of 2 issues. They fixed one issue but not the other and sent it back to me.
Everything on home screen shows up as "ghosting" images on all dark screens (ie: notifications, quickstart and dialer screens). So I get ghosts of all the home screen icons, google search bar, and my screen saver. They are whitish but have a little color. They get stronger as the display is turned up. Huawei is claiming it isn't an issue, but that it's normal and even sent me photos of this ghosting effect on the 5x they keep at the call center for reference (same OS and build as mine). I admit it looks similar to mine. Two supervisors said they see it on their own phones: a Lumia 950 and an iPhone 7. It showed up on my phone about 2 weeks after I upgraded to Marshmallow and was not there before. I've never seen this on any other phone. So they are implying I need to live with it because it's "normal" for this model. Comments please? I think they should have sent me a new phone.
Please check your phones and see if you have this ghosting effect also. If you do it will be obvious, not subtle.
do you have any screenshots showing it?

Yes, I will try to provide you one.
Sorry, I tried two different ways to post a link with a pic, but the site won't let me. And I see no way to upload one directly. How do I do this? It says I can't because I haven't made enough posts.
I could email it to you, I guess. Please tell me the correct way to do this on here.

I uploaded a pic to tinypic and tried to insert it here, but still no go.
I clicked on "insert image" but there is no option to uncheck. I also tried the icon that says "insert link. I cannot find any options that I can uncheck.. Sorry if I'm being dense. Could you be more specific please?
I had the same problem here running on EMUI 6.1.
after i played a game called BBTAN on my phone for a long time and i clicked it away to go to whatsapp or something, you could see the highscore of the game and some other stuff of it very vagely in the other app screens.
I thought it had to do with the heating up of the device and display after playing a game for like a long time... BUT...
I was allready planning to unlock my phone and upgrade to LineAgeOS (Cyanogenmod) 14.1 because i didnt like EMUI. SO, upgraded the software 2 weeks ago and never had the issue anymore ever since.... Very weird...
most probably the software issue, can be solved by either a factory reset or flashing any other custom rom

Thanks for the reply. It was in my spam folder so I didn't find it until now.
I've never heard of EMUI 6.1. Is it possible you mean Android 6.1? To my knowledge, EMUI only goes up to 4.1 When I upgraded my phone to Android 6.0.1 in November, I didn't have the issue at first. About 2 weeks later it appeared. It has not gotten any worse, but their "repair" did nothing to fix it at all. And they did not include a note with any explanation, nor did they include the note I was promised explaining what they did do to the phone.
I am not comfortable with rooting my phone (I don't want to lose the warranty and I don't know what I'm doing). I don't think it should be necessary to root a phone to fix an issue like this. The company should either be able to fix it or replace the phone. I refuse to accept their (most recent) explanation that it is "normal", as I've never seen it on another phone and the first 3 agents I discussed it with agreed that it was indeed an issue and offered to start an RMA for it.
Yesterday I called them again to complain about the situation. The agent said she was "escalating" (I always groan when agents say this because it ends up being meaningless) the case and that I would hear back from administration after they hear back from tech support---which could take up to 2 weeks, believe it or not. I can live with the glitch, but when I decide to sell the phone eventually I'm concerned it will potentially kill the sale or encourage someone to offer less than the phone is worth.

I have re-set it several times since encountering the issue with no success. I am not comfortable rooting the phone. I am trying to get a new RMA started, and in the meantime I'm hoping Nougat is released OTA soon and that it will help.
The reason for my original post was mainly to see how many other 5x owners have encountered the same issue. I want to know if this in an inherent problem with the phone, if the Marshmallow upgrade may have caused it (it didn't appear on my phone right away after upgrading to Marshmallow, but it did appear about 2 weeks afterwards).

Thanks for the reply. Supposedly they already did release Nougat a few months ago but there were issues with it and they halted it. They keep telling me they will be releasing it again. So who knows?
I already did send it in to them for repair of two issues, this one and another. They fixed the other issue and sent the phone back to me with no explanation. I'm trying to get another RMA started and this time I will right on top of them about this. Unfortunately they make it impossible to communicate directly with their service center and I was told the service center is very slow returning communications to the administration or CS.

I'm not confused. It's what 2 different CSRs told me.
But that isn't why I made this post, and it's off-topic. There is only one point: Do you own an Honor 5X, and if so, do you have the same ghosting problem on dark screens that I have? I would love to get some responses from 5x owners. I have tried uploading pictures of it onto here, but am not able to. But this is a very obvious thing on my phone so you wouldn't need pictures if it occurs on your phone. You would know.

I have to answer yes to this, but after a return to LG via my ebay seller (with the phone being under a year old) within the last month, I had the phone come back in working condition.
I've since upgraded to the latest official supported version of the OS, (7.0) (V30b-TWN-XX) and now... the back camera doesn't work.
Has anyone had this happen yet? It is kind of mentioned here though. https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73107988&postcount=6
I went crazy thinking that the battery had broken it, that I went and bought a new camera module.
I'm thinking it's software related and that they forgot to include the camera module driver in the OS build. I could be wrong...
But the other frustrating thing is that now the phone screams that the battery is not an LG battery - which it certainly is (still the original) when I restart the phone.
I love this phone, but the issues are driving me crazy that I'm even considering going to the dark side.

Multi touch issues?

Hello everyone, I just got this tablet today and I'm having an issue with it. I was trying to play a music game and I noticed that when I touched both extremes of the screen the multitouch would release my fingers for some reason. I've recorded a video of it using a multitouch application just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, here it is:
Link to the Youtube video
Do you think it's defective? If anyone has this M5 10 tablet could you test it for me and see if you also have the same multitouch issue? Since I just got it today, should I return it? Or is it something that can be fixed?
Thank you.
Received mine today from Boulanger in France, i used the same software as you to test it. Everything is working fine, even with 3 or 4 fingers, using the same kind of routine you used. So i suppose that your tablet is faulty. Sorry mate.

Has someone more info on this issue as the tablet is useless for me with those touch problems and I will send it back if there is no fix available in the near future.

Hi Andrgin, which is your problem? In my case I have the problem only if I touch the screen with two fingers. In this case seems that the tablet, after 2 sec, can't recognize anymore the touch. I'm waiting the response of the support for the ticket that I opened, hopping that they can tell me that is only a software problem and not an hardware issue, let's see...Anyway I have your idea too, I bought this tablet to play music game and is really useless with this problem.
When I touch the screen with 2 fingers at the same time and do not move them for about 1 second the tablets looses the touch of both fingers. It does not happen if I dont put both fingers down at the same time (more than about 500ms), move the fingers around while they touch the screen. Also it does not happen with 3 or more fingers.
To me it seems like the system treats the as a gesture.
I made a video about it:
youtu.be/PXXakOw_1Hk
I also thinks that the system treats this as some kind of a weird gesture. I don't think it is related to the hardware. I'll ask the Huawei support soonish because it really is annoying with cytus 2 for example or even pdfs when you want to pan soon and have 2 fingers on it and then your touch input gets removed.
This is with the 10 pro
Could it be, I hope that you are right but is really strange that only some devices have this problem, if it is a software problem, all the devices with this software need to have the issue.
I think all have this problem. So far everybody that said he does not have this bug had tested it the wrong way. You have to place both fingers at the same time and do not move them. If you move them while touching the screen it still works.
And no I dont think it is hardware related.
I also experienced this (talked about it in another thread), but it must be more complicated than that.
It's not something that systematically happens whenever i put two fingers down a the same time. It works just fine most of the time, but occasionally notes will drop, always in the same spots, in the same songs. "Pointer location" shows the touch is still being registered, if that's anything to be trusted.
I'll take the occasion to ask again since there seem to be other people who play music games in this thread: beside the touchscreen issues, has anyone noticed a slight delay on the audio feedback? I'm talking about a 100-150 ms delay from the moment i touch the screen to the moment the corresponding sound effect plays. The touch itself is registered correctly, but the audio lags behind for some reason.
Either way, i sent back the 10.8", gonna have the 8.4" here by tomorrow i hope, will update on how this one behaves.
It does not matter where you place your fingers only that it happens at the same time (less than about 500ms) and you dont move them for about 1 second.
About audio I dont know. Most time I had sound off.
It may be a general Android Oreo bug, although the article speaks about Android 8.1, not 8.0:
https://www.xda-developers.com/android-8-1-oreo-multi-touch-bug-fixed-june-update/
Maybe Huawei used parts of Android 8.1 for the M5.
A fix from Google is planned for the June security update.
Just tested the 8.4", after installing the new update. Interestingly enough, it didn't seem to drop any inputs.
The sound delay, however, is exactly the same, and it baffles me no one else seems to notice it.
On top of that, i think i got a defective unit, as the charging speed starts off at 3300-3400 mAh, then drops to 500-600, never to rise again. So much for quickcharge.
Battery also seems to run considerably hotter for no apparent reason: 37 degrees Celsius while charging at that pitiful speed, no other apps running.
For reference, the 10.8" never exceeded 32 degrees, and that's while charging at max speed, with apps running at the same time.
Overall, this tablet has been nothing but a huge disappointment, i'll just refund it and wait for something else to come out at this point.
Edit: it charges normally when the screen is turned off. When the screen is on, the charger seems to provide enough current to offset whatever i'm consuming, plus those 500-600 extra mAh, so no matter what i'm doing that speed doesn't change. The 10.8" was charging normally, full speed minus whatever power i was drawing, so i'm still pretty sure something's not right.
@chris_g I really hope it could be the problem but wait two more months it's really frustrating! For now I haven't received yet one answer from the support...
Not really good news from Italian support, them tell me that no reports was received about our problem, so them suggested me to try to reset the device to the default to see if is a software problem. Did you guys found something else? I'm really thinking to request the replace of the device.
Just to be sure, could someone give me the mail of the international/English support? I want to try to write a mail also to them.
Cheers
I got the M5 Pro from amazon.it and the warranty check showed that I get warranty in most European countries. I opened a ticked with the Austrian support providing all the info they needed. They said they dont know of the problem so far and will forward it. This was over 1 week ago and I did not receive any response yet.
Replacing the tablet will not solve anything because every M5 (at least the 10" versions) have this bug.
And no it is not an Oreo bug because my Mate 10 (also EMUI 8.0) works fine. I guess it is some code Huawei added to support the pen.
Firmware Finder already shows a EMUI 8.1, but it is not approved for installation yet. I guess we will get Oreo 8.1 in a few weeks/months and this bug will hopefully be fixed in the new version.

Don't be so optimistic on that one, as Google themselves introduced an all new multi-touch bug in the 8.1 base. Thus one bug will maybe just be replaced by another one, as Google already stated that they'll have the bug fixed in the June update soonest. Let's hope Huawei uses the patched June base to upgrade our tablet to 8.1.
Sent from my HTC U11 using XDA Labs
Huawei already ships Android 8.1 with the P20 so I guess we are getting the same code. I never heard about multi touch problems there so I guess Huawei has already replaced that faulty Google code. With all the people complaining about late Android updates for existing devices, but there is a reason most vendors wait until they release a new Android version for the masses. Google phones are simply beta test devices.
I have the 8.4" wifi model. It suffers the multi-touch problem but not the sound delay problem. I tried the drum pad app, sounds play instantly as soon as I touch them.

Auto focus issue

Hi,
When I recording movies, where moving objects are located (eg, filming a child) loses focus. Auutofocus works for a while before he catches the right object again.
This can be seen in the following video at minute 1:15

Do you have such a problem?
Hi
Did you find any solution to this? I am having the same problem, but with Honor 10, not Honor View 10.
Thanks
Same here bro....
Unfortunately I did not find a solution. Probably this type is so.
I have both honor 10 and honor view 10. The problem is visible only on view 10.
@meriox, @Supyko and @wallah
I know it is a bit late and I don't know if you already contacted Huawei, but I found this thread when searching for the same/similar problem. We are talking about something similar in here, and looks like that happens with some phones with specific EMUI builds. That problem appeared in some phones recently after updating to EMUI 9.1. I don't know if the problem is exactly the same, but you can check the videos I posted in the newer thread. The solution seems to be to get Huawei to fix it if you still have warranty or change your EMUI build.
I have the same issue since 9.1 arrived. Will it be fixed with next build or shall I send it to service?
No one knows. If your warranty allows you to wait, and if the problem is not bothering you much, maybe you can wait. I know only a case where the phone went to Huawei service, but the user is using 8.1 now, so we don't actually know if Huawei fixed anything. Just some/few phones have the problem, so a change in the hardware may solve the problem. I returned mine because I was in the return period, and I'm waiting for a new one to check I it still has the problem...
Hi Everyone, I downgraded my phone to EMUI 8.0 and found no auto focus issue. The focus issue is only on EMUI 9.0 and 9.1. There is a firmware with september security update and auto focus issue fixed present on firmware finder but it has "log" written on it, so its still in Beta update. I hope it gets resolved.
Hi Everyone, this problem happened in my Honor 10 after a update EMUI 9.1. The curious issue was they minimized the Instagram video lag on "histories", but not completely. So I will try a downgrade.

Look into the Honor 10 forum here in XDA. The problem is well known, but not everyone has it. If you contact Huawei support they say they will fix it under warranty. I don't know anyone who tried that (just one person, but decidede not to update to 9.1 again. They switched the camera and the mainboard.
I've tested 2 Honor 10 devices and I will receive tomorrow the third to see if the problem doesn't exist in this third unit. I asked in other foruns and just some people have the problem. I belive there are some camera hardware production batch that has problems with the laterst firmware.

Hello everyone, I just received a fix (France).
Update 9.1.0.351 : fix autofocus issue and security patch (September)
I didn't try it yet.
Edit : after few test, yes the problem is fixed.
However, I noticed the EIS is getting crazy if the phone is moving to quickly or unexpectedly. I don't know if it was like this before.
Hello. Being in France, i received a new fix, 9.1.0.351, wich i installed some minutes ago.
Like Pistache9 said, the issue is resolved, finally.
We can now use our phones xithout stressing .
I got update in Czechia too. Focusing issue seems to be fixed or it's much much better at least. Also I didn't notice any crazy behaviour with EIS.
After restarting the app I couldn't reproduce this behaviour. Everything is working fine now.
Now waiting for emui 10 beta haha
Hello, have anyone recieved the new Update for the View 10 in Germany ? I'm still waiting.
Oh well... I'm not sure whether I had this issue before update to EMUI 10 or not, but I'm surely noticing it more and more now. In about 1 in 10 photos, the camera focuses just totally wrong but acts like everything is okay. It is quite disappointing to find out back home that the interesting picture I took is blurry mess, or the middle part of stitched panorama is out of focus.
My camera lens is not getting dirty or greasy and definitely is not scratched. (See attached pictures taken just few seconds apart - ignore that I can't hold the phone in a level...)
Anyone else having issue like this or is the phone trying to tell me that I should upgrade?

I do not have focus issues anymore since an EMUI 9 Update. Never got any issues with EMUI 10 with the camera. However, i noticed that since 1 or 2 weeks, my pictures seems pretty blurry like my lens is dirty, but it is not. The focus works well however.
Don't know how to help you on that, sorry.

Green shade correctible?

I bought this used s9 plus for quite affordable price. Everything looked fine during testing but after sometime, I observed whole screen to be of Greenish shade.
I rebooted and it worked absolutely fine. On searchibg internet, i found threads, yt videos by a number of people, almost all claiming that it is an update consequence. My questions are
1. Is it a software issue? If yes, can I expect some wayto solve - official ota or root and custom or old rom (if possible at all)?
2. If not software issue, is it a software induced hardware issue? Any way to repair without paying full for display?
2.1 If i get it replaced somehow, will itcome back again?
3. In any case, if I don't get it repaired, how long can I expect the deviceto be functional; ie before this green shade becomes permanent instead of being intermittent making device unusable?
I have a similar question for s9 too which ill post in that forum.
Thank you
