High battery drain after upgrading to MIUI 11.0.2 / Alternative ROM? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

I'm not keen on all the clutter with MIUI, so I've been meaning to try another ROM for a while but after upgrading to MIUI 11.0.2 it's got much worse and even with just a bit of twitter and email usage from time to time it needs charging by early evening, so I think I'll definitely need to change ROM quite soon.
I've attached some screenshots from Amplify in case they show anything that I could try in the meantime (it's always difficult to find the time to switch ROM and have to spend hours getting apps all set up and working again, so I don't know when I'll get round to that). Most of the high occurrence stuff is under Unknown, so I don't know if it's safe to limit them but I'm not even sure about the Wakelocks it says are safe to limit, GCoreFlp and SyncLoopWakeLock and what side-effects their might be from limiting them (not that I can without paying to upgrade to Pro, which there's no point doing if it's not going to help and I'm going to just have to switch ROM to improve the battery life).
What ROM would you recommend? Obviously low battery drain, stability and the standard features working (e.g. dual SIM, fingerprint, etc.) is important but there's a few other things I'd like to have if possible.
1. Ability to use a alpha-numeric decryption code. I know how to set the decryption code via the terminal so that it's different from the unlock code but the MIUI ROM only seems to allow you to enter a numeric code at boot to decrypt.
2. Call/SMS blocklist, Dual apps and Second space are all quite handy features in MIUI that it would be nice to have too.
I'm not that bothered about updates as it's a pain if you have to reset and reinstall apps after flashing them and even with OTA updates that don't require any app reinstallation there's always a chance they break something or cause problems (like MIUI 11 has with the battery life) , so if I've got a good, stable ROM installed I doubt I'll update it, at least not very regularly.

call lag (audio/answer) looking for rom advice or workaround recommendations

hi, sure many of you know the X-U has (or for some of us certainly has) a problem with "call lag". this is in two parts:
1) cannot answer calls quickly because sometimes cannot reach the slider, i think if phone was in deep sleep when call comes in?
2) after answering a call, you cannot hear the other person for some period of time after answering, around 5-10 seconds approx.
i have a warranty replacment XperiaU and i'm trying to decide between the newest official based roms (b.1.100? debloated etc., which i'm hoping Sony has fixed some of this (?)) and the newer, apparently fairly bug free CM10 builds here. obviously the latter means unlocking BL which i'm willing to do IF it offers any benefit (to this issue, not really bothered about other benefits, mainly trying to use it as a phone!)
not sure if this is a resource management issue as the first reports for e.g.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484559
say that it had no lag, but later reports clearly say it does.
the video i saw on that thread made the phone look noticely faster than i'm used to on b.1.54
if there's some app or tweak to improve this that would be equally good.
any thoughts/advice much appreciated.
just a note this problem still present in CM11 beta builds i'm using (from macaw.pl)
changd to SmartAssv2 governor, usually about 70MB RAM showing free. not using any RAM management app other than greenify. phone actually runs pretty well otherwise on kitkat.
going to try ExDialer (not free? :/) and that RAM manager that i keep seeing recommended.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrummy.apps.memory.manager
see some recommendations for this also, not sure specifically what in there is helping?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cleanmaster.mguard
Some say to delete call logs, anyone found that helps? anyone tried different governors etc.?
or a tweek to keep dialler in memory, like the launcher?

looks hopeful!
quick update, haven't solved this it's still a major problem with this phone, but i realised you can use the power button to wake it and then answer the call! sort of a workaround, but inelegant.

Good Stable CM13 ROM from existing ones

I am currently on MIUI 7 global stable and want to flash CM13. Can you please guide me to which are the options I have currently for :
- Good calls and call volume (I use 3G only..no LTE)
- Bluetooth pairing and music through bluetooth headphones
- Working Camera
- Fingerprint (I have a FPC102..checked via AIDA64)
No offense but I saw most of the devs mentioning in the bugs section "You Tell" but there are some ifs and buts..
I already have TWRP flashed..
Most of you might have already tried all the ROMS..hence asking your opinion..thank you dear friends and the wonderful devs
Official CM13 has almost no problems for me (I say almost because I haven't encountered any that haven't been fixed in a day or two). Fingerprint is faster than MIUI tbh. Must be because fingerprint is baked-in in android marshmallow. Don't have to bother with MIUI force closing apps (torrent apps always closed after some time in MIUI) . Multitasking is great! With MIUI my phone felt like a 1.5 GB phone with its aggressive memory handling. Regarding camera the camera quality may have degraded slightly or it may just be placebo. But the MIUI camera app is definitely nicer and faster. That's the only thing I'm missing from MIUI. Some people have problems like fingerprint not working (even if Aida show FPC102), battery always stuck at 2% or 50%, led not working etc with official Cm13 but none of those problems for me . So stability would probably depend upon your luck.
I haven't tried Santosh's CM13 as it is said to lock bootloader again. I have tried resurrection remix but some bugs like recent apps showing even Android system (which has been present since resurrection lollipop in all devices. It doesnt hinder much but Android system is not supposed to show in recent apps. To understand what I'm talking about, when you open say a YouTube link it shows menu for which app you would like to open the link with and even that will be present in the recent apps.) and data not working ( data may be fixed by now though). I haven't tried other because Official one satisfied me very much.
Try the official one for once and see if you have any bugs. If not restore MIUI. MIUI 8 is coming and it seems it has some cool features but nothing to bring me back to MIUI.

Huge list of disabled apps! 180+!!!

There is an issue with the latest list so don't copy it completely. I got a bootloop after restarting my phone today and I had to factory reset... this is as of 10/8/16 at 12:50pm. The list from the 5th of October on back should be fine. I'm currently trying to sort out the issue.
................................
Here is a list of apps and services which can be disabled on the Note 7 while still maintaining stability; Data, Calling, Texting, MMS, Wi-Fi, Tethering, Bluetooth, GPS, Sync, Camera, EQ, HD Calling, Always On and all the S-Pen features work, but most other things are turned off like Fingerprint, Iris, NFC, Edge Panel, Pay Services, etc... This list isn't meant to be copied exactly by everyone because we all use our devices differently but you can pick and choose what you want to get the optimal performance from your device.
As of 10/6/16 I have 180+ apps and services disabled and today I got over 8 hours of SOT with 11% battery left (over 9 hours projected of SOT based on the days' usage). I didn't use any power saving modes and kept my brightness at a reasonable level so using the device was easy and not annoying due to the brightness being so low. I had location and sync enabled and wasn't doing any unnatural things trying to squeeze out as much battery life as I could. This was real world usage with all the necessary features and background processes running so using the device felt natural and functional. I say this so people don't think I fudged these numbers by doing things like letting my phone sit with the screen on while at the lowest brightness and not using it, or that I was using some power saving modes to squeeze out as much life as possible. My phone ran at full power all day. I've never even toggled power saving mode on my phone before.
Due to XDA's limit on the amount of image uploads I'm going to create two post with the complete list of disabled apps and link them here in the OP.
I'm using EZ Package Disabler (Samsung) from the play store to disable these apps and services. I bought that one because it had the highest rating.
Below here are some updates I posted during the process of figuring out what to disable. The post with the latest date is always going to have the most current and relevant information.

Actually, most of the features are still there. I bought it for the S-pen features and all that is still there. Did you go through the list and see what I turned off or are you just replying to reply? If you read my OG post you'd see I said that my goal was to keep the functionality of the device.
This phone is loaded with bloat and useless services and apps that most will never use. All these things can cause battery drain, cpu usage, ram usage, hardware heat, among other things. So why not turn off what is not needed? It doesn't matter how much ram the phone has, why run stuff that doesn't need to run since you aren't using it?
Fingerprint, shealth, Android pay, software updating, iris scanner, gmail, standard email, game launcher, Samsung cloud (much more useful than Google backup as it supports call logs, sms and other recoveries), the emergency alerts, car mode(for operating in car potentially with different launcher suitable for vehicle use) the list goes on and on and I did look, I don't post for no reason.

Like I said, I bought it for the S-pen features. What I disabled I don't use and have no use for. Also If I want to use them at any time I can just reenable them. So let's go through your list. Fingerprint, I use swipe or a pin or a pattern. S-health, I use google fit, or nothing since I don't need a smartphone to tell me how to be fit. Android pay, I use cash. Software updating, if I want an update I can manually grab it, I don't need a service running constantly checking for them. Iris scanner, it's stupid and I'll never use it. Gmail, I use inbox and Alto. Standard email, I only have gmail accounts so don't need other email services. Game launcher, I don't play games. Emergency Alerts, seriously? You are just looking for things to justify your post, EA's are useless and annoying when they pop up and have never benefited me once. Car mode, I have no use for it since I drive a 2000 windstar minivan and waze provides me with all I need in a car. Also, you didn't name one thing that makes this phone great but rather things that are basically on all Android's. Again, I bought the phone for the S-pen, all that is still there. Why are you even doing this? your post are as useless as the apps and services I disabled.
Troll flushed where it belongs. Goodbye, no need to be so rude about it.

Totally agree. I will try testing N7 when I get mine. First factory reset it out of the box (maybe get the update first then factory reset it with recovery). After that set it up keep all apps and see how battery is... the try the disabler I loke to debloat because phone looks much more cleaner then. And any debloat list is totally personal that why I used TB on my rooted devices, this time won't rush to root
Just disable the damn phone, turn it off and stop using it lol

Why all the hate?
I really don't get when people post about disabling certain features that others get upset. Or use power saver, etc.
This is one of the great things about Android, the ability to customize and mod our phones to our liking. Try doing any of these things with an Iphone, you can't. So this particular user wants to disable Gmail and messages because he uses other services (Inbox is awesome). He reports back that things still seem stable? Great! I am interested in updates to see if he runs into any problems etc
Let's talk about the great features we have, which include the ability to replace core apps if we desire. Don't jump on someone for doing so.
A mouse running into a room at a party doesn't cause chaos, how people react to it does. We are all responsible for our own actions. You don't like how someone else customizes their phone, who cares? Move on to the next post.

Used the phone very heavy today and ran into no real issues. I had to reenable one service because I tried to use the built-in EQ and it made settings crash. I was able to find the cause in less than a minute and reenable it The service that needs to run for the EQ to work is "SoundAlive" on page 8.
Also got 2.75 hours of SOT and 3 hours of gps use and was right at 50% battery left. At the end of tomorrow I'm going to post some screenshots.
Thanks for the list OP, I probably won't be disabling as much as you have but it's great to know what I can kill without messing up the phone. (when I finally get it)

No problem. I plan on trying to get more added to the list. Once I know what I've added so far is safe and doesn't cause any issues I'll slowly add more.
I appreciate the list too. It is good to know what can be safely disabled and then we can decide what we want to keep or give the heave ho.

I've done another day of heavy use today and I'm very happy with my results. I had over 3 hours of SOT using auto brightness which stayed on max brightness most of the time since I was outside and I still had over 40% (I estimate I was on track to get very close to 6 hours SOT with max auto brightness!!!) battery left when I got home. I also used GPS for about an hour along with installing app, and constantly doing other stuff on the phone. I'm going to update the OP with some more screenshots. But from these past two full days of very heavy use and no force closes or issues to speak of (other than having to turn SoundAlive back on for the EQ to work) I'm going to say what I've disabled so far is safe and causes no dependency issues. Also, the phone runs very smooth and doesn't get hot at all. Even today with basically 3 straight hours of SOT and max auto brightness the phone never heated up.
Oh! I'm at 101 things disabled now (not including my downloaded disabled apps) which is how I ran it all day today. More to come! Once I feel like I've found everything I can disable safely I'll do a new updated OP with all I found.
9/30/16 screenshots just showing some battery and cpu use stats. In the future I'm going to add some temp stats. If anyone has a good app for monitoring temps let me know even if it's paid. I don't mind buying apps that are good and useful.
Awesome the list is identical to what I disabled excluding iris, finger print, Samsung app store, gmail and sound alive. I can tell my phone lasts longer on a single charge and everything works just as if everything were enabled. For some odd reason I don't like seeing my RAM going over 2GB lol I know I know unused memory is a waste in Android OS.

I've always hated automation. I can't stand things running without my permission! I've had all startup programs on windows disabled since 2003 Back in the day on Windows XP I got my active running services in task manager to below 20. I'm now at 101 things disabled on the note 7 and I know there is a ton more I can turn off but I'm going about things slowly. I've confirmed that the 101 things I've turned off so far are safe and the phone definitely runs better in every way.
As far as the ram theories and myths about Android it's mostly people repeating their misunderstandings. Of course if you are using the apps in the ram a lot it's good for them to be there because they will load faster but if you are never using those apps and services and they are still sitting in your ram then it's not productive and a waste of resources which will cause the phone to not run optimally. These phones (and computers) come preloaded with tons of stuff running because they are targeted at the average user and not at the power/informed users. Anyone who knows much of anything about computers and how they are setup from the factory knows they are not configured for performance but rather a balance between performance and usability. Of course Android is getting better and better at managing apps and putting them to sleep but there still is nothing better than completely disabling things you don't need and will never use and thereby freeing up resources you can use for things you are actually using...wow! what a concept, have resources there to use for things you actually use! Genius! People seem to act like having ram full just for the sake of having it full is a good thing in Android when that is completely false. Even Android likes to have resources free that it can use for other things.
142 disabled apps and services
So I'm now sitting at 142 things disabled. I'm going to run my current setup for a couple days and see how it goes. I'll report back the results. Hopefully in a week or so I'll have a full list of what can be turned off without having issues.
Looking forward to your end results. Thank You for sharing your experience debloating.

Whatsapp getting killed, other apps too

Hello, guys,
I have had Redmi Note 3 for 6 months now and I have been struggling with an annoying issue.
Whatsapp gets killed after a little time of idleness and unless I kill it in the task manager and restart it, I cannot either receive or send messages. When I check in the running apps section, it is not there so the OS certainly kills it. And just clicking its icon on the desktop, opens the GUI but it does not work unless I force close it and re-open it.
I have had issues with Whatsapp on previous devices - more of the common stuff - delayed notifications, messy push service. This is something else.
MIUI 8 is notorious, it seems, for its RAM and Battery management killing apps and I often struggle with that, too. For example: I minimize VLC to open Firefox. I switch back to VLC - ok, the movie starts over, the app has been killed. This is really annoying and I have turned off all kinds of optimization to prevent it, with no success. I am not sure, though, that it is connected to the Whatsapp issue. Because Whatsapp seems to get killed when the phone is idle for a moment but not when switching between apps.
I rarely use Viber but I think the situation there is the same. I sent a message to a friend and I got no response. I opened the app 5 days later and the response came However, it had tried to arrive 2 minutes after my original message. But I had not opened Viber for 5 days, so...that happened.
Let me know if you need details about my settings. I would be really grateful if someone can share some insight on what might the issue be. I guess if I root the phone I can try and locate the culprit module that kills apps. Maybe edit a config file to disable the killing functionality. It is clear this ROM does not like running apps....
Thanks,
Kiril Ekblad
P.S. I have been on Google multiple times: nobody seems to have that issue.
Disable battery saver
developer options -> disalbe MIUI optimization
MIUI is way to aggressive in killing apps ....
maybe go for a custom rom?
You can follow this https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...de-redmi-note-3-sd-mtk-multi-tasking-t3358433 and see how it`s going with push up notification.
When i`ve used miui 8, i`ve done this things and it seems to work good, but anyway push up notification came with a small delay..
For this reason i left miui 8 (very bad ram management) and flashed nougat custom rom and everything working good
Thank you, all
I have actually tried all of these and all steps in the quoted topic. No difference whatsoever. I would gladly go for a custom ROM bit things have gotten really complicated lately. A coupke of yeara aho I would easily grab and flash a custom ROM. Now when I browse through the ROMs topics here I get frustrates.
Something about firmwares, stuck bootloaders I have no idea where to start.
Oh and I don't want to lose slow motoon and time lapse videos. Do you know of a custom ROM that supports them ans the stock one does?

Try clean flash of MIUI ROM or flash Epic / Xiaomi.eu ROM
Thanks, I will have to research on the EPIC/EU ROM.
I am all for changing the ROM as long as I can cope with the flashing and I do not lose any of the significant features of the stock ROM.
By the way, recently - the last several days - I have noticed that on multiple occasions Whatsapp seems to be running - it is showing in the Running apps and still the program cannot either receive or send until I force close it and re-start. Whatsapp web also says Phone not connected.

My RN3P is just unusable with every custom ROM I install

Hey.
This has been happening for a while, at first with Lineage OS (the last Oreo build before they stopped development), my phone had random shutdowns, GCam lagged a ton, demanding apps like Games or Photo editors (Cytus 2 or Snapseed for example) just didn't work right, they froze for a full 5 seconds, Social Network apps didn't work right either, I had to use Lite versions of their apps to make it less stressful to use.
I got back to MIUI but with Xiaomi.eu's ROM and I loved it, but it had some problems too, and I really hated that I wasn't able to experience newer androids, and I missed GCam a lot, so I went and Installed Pixel Experience, and it was laggy too, nearly unusable in every situation, it freezes at most of the apps I tried and it didn't work really well. Finally, I'm with Havoc OS, and I love it, but is UNUSABLE outside of a Wi-Fi network, when outside it doesn't just lags, it freezes, does random reboots, and also my headphone jack doesn't work so I can't even listen to music while having the phone on my pocket, it just does a blank noise when tapping some buttons.
I'm sick of my phone being too slow with every custom rom that I install, and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, of I have some strange firmware or whatever it is, I don't know.
I have TWRP updated, I installed every rom on a clean state, wiping everything.
My phone is a kenzo 2GB variant.
Please help me, I really want to listen to music while browsing Instagram again, now I can't even do one of these things..

Hey mate. Try this Lineage OS 14 https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/development/rom-lineage-os-t3877377/
I also have 2GB variant of RN3Pro and I also tried so many roms that promise speed. But to be honest everything past Nougat is unusable. The combination of Google service eating tons of rams and the OS itself taking more space in your ram ended up costing a lot of performance.
That Lineage OS 14 is the current best for me, it supported a lot of new features (splitscreen, better GCam) while remains low in RAM usage. Good SOT too, still managed to squeze 5+ hours of SOT (but that's probably because my Radon kernel setting).

Pie getting 6+ of SOT very easily. I m using Crdroid with shadow. Now dev has provided xcrima and shadow kernel with default enabled 500mb + zram for 2gb ram. So its relief.
I was having the same issue, every rom didn't had a near good experience of use for me, so I started searching and I've found microg, which is an alternative for google apps, but using much less ram.
So what I did was installing nanodroid-microg, and one of the stores that comes with the package(in my case, Yalp Store, but according to their wiki, you can install google playstore also.), Now I have about 1gb ram free (I'm also using AppOps to block some app permissions like wake lock, run in background etc.), but I had some problems so I will show you what I did to install it and make it fully work.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-nanomod-5-0-20170405-microg-t3584928
Firstly you have to download two of their stable release packages, one is nanodroid-setupwizard and the other is the nanodroid-microg.
Then you will flash the rom you want, the kernel you want, magisk and finally both packages, first the setupwizard, then the microg package.
There's no secret when flashing setupwizard, it's a aroma package which will give you steps to choose what you want to install, I remember choosing swype libraries, microg (of course), Yalp Store (with fakestore), Google Map API and UnifiedNlp location backends (Mozilla and Deja'vu)
After that, just flash nanodroid-microg and then follow the tuturial below starting from step 15
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6/how-to/guide-microg-oneplus-6-source-ligthway-t3874469
Obs: at step 25: if your push notification tester app show you a error related to incompatibility or unavailability of google play services, you probably need to enable signature spoofing on FakeStore like I had to, I'm using aex 7.1 rom so I don't know if the steps will be the same for you but what I did was: go to settings > apps > tap setting button on the top right corner > app permission > signature spoofing > tap three dots on the top right corner > show system > then enable FakeStore. After that try step 25 again and proceed.
I hope it helps you or anybody reading this which choose to install it. Enjoy and I'm sorry for any grammar mistakes.
Your best bet at speed is an old nougat ROM and a swap memory. Format ur internal storage before flashing.
I've installed aosp pie on 3gb and it's very good. Maybe 1gb ram does make a big difference. Choose light os like lineage or Nexus

Please help me, I really want to listen to music while browsing Instagram again, now I can't even do one of these things..

just flash android pie pixel experience (go edition)

If you want to stay on pie. Try ArrowOs pie. It's the most smooth pie ROM I found for my 2gb rn3p. However the ROM is no longer being updated.
