SM-G965U1 - leaving AT&T - How to remove AT&T Bloatware / Image? Reset? - Samsung Galaxy S9+ Questions & Answers

I bought an SM-G965U1 when they were first released. I was on the AT&T network, and their bloated image was installed. I'm switching to Xfinity - I have the SIM, and I am making the switch shortly. (Hoping for a reply / replies first.).
I want to get rid of the AT&T bloatware and restore the Samsung image. Is this as simple as performing a reset?
Is there an easier or better way?
Is it possible to install a different image altogether, or am I screwed by knox?
I'll remove my SD card and backup my files in advance, of course.
Thanks in advance!

Interesting, upon SIM card change, the AT&T software was removed. So, questions one and two have been self-answered.
Concerning ROMs, I have a Snapdragon processor, I presume, living in the USA. I'm a neophyte concerning mobile phone ROMs, but I do have some Linux experience (RHEL and various desktop distros.)
I have an old Note 3 to play with, are there ROMs for that so I can "practice"? I'd hate to brick my primary phone.
Cheers!

With the S9+ in the US, they're all the exact same hardware as far as I know. With patched Odin you can basically flash any stock firmware from any US carrier you want, so long as it's the same bootloader version (of the last 5 characters of your current version, it should be a number, and then other characters). If you're on the most recent update, it would likely be bootloader v7. My phone was purchased as an unlocked ATT device, but I flashed the US Unlocked version (XAA) which is the version that unbranded Samsung devices have. It's fully functional and there's zero carrier bloat. OTAs work and everything else as if it was that model originally.
But I guess the big question is why flash to something else if the bloat was auto removed? What's your current version?
Edit after reading again: the U1 software is the Samsung Unbranded firmware. Interesting that the seller put it on there already. So TLDR; you shouldn't need to do anything. Generally branded models wouldn't just remove their bloat when you change carriers (the S8 being an exception I believe), but it appears the unbranded version does to some extent.

Flash the latest U1 (unlocked variant Snapdragon version) firmware in Odin. Download it via Frija
*RUN AS ADMIN, in model it's SM-G965U1 CSC use XAA and be sure "auto" is Checked.

That's it. Use any carrier you want without issues.

Thank you, Jessooca. I may give this a shot next weekend. At the moment everything appears to be working properly, although it's slow.

Yeah, I was surprised when I saw it happening. Happy too! Not only did it remove the AT&T crap, but it also restored some of the hidden Samsung apps, such as the Galaxy sensors and action dash that were hidden by AT&T.
I'm not sure which version you're asking about.
Kernel version is 4.9.112-17018887 (November update)
Baseband version is G965U1UEU7CSK1
Knox is at 3.2.1 API level 27, and TIMA is 4.0.0
Build number is PPR1.180610.011.G965U1EU7CSK1
Then there is a "Service provider SW version"which is about 50 characters in length and ends in 443098 CCT/CCT/XAA
Lastly, there's a Security software version which is 9 lines in length but ends with SMR Nov-2019 Release 1.
I appreciate your reply. As I said, I am a neophyte concerning smart phones, but I am interested in learning more since I retired a few weeks ago and have more free time now.

Baseband told me enough. You're already on the USA Unlocked version that phones bought straight from Samsung has. It has no carrier specific bloat.
My main question is still what your intentions are? You're already on the most neutral party software for the US and shouldn't have any issues. So I'm not sure what you would want to flash now.
SMG965U1 is what you're on. The carrier versions are just SMG965U (no 1 after the model)

I considered playing with ROMs. However, I may just buy a used pixel for that. What I would really like is to be able to root it so I can run Titanium Backup and move apps to the SD card. I have not even tried since changing carriers. Perhaps I don't need root on the unlocked version.

I've debated manyyyy times to root just for titanium backup, but losing some Samsung features for it isn't worth it.
Before reflashing, I used the built in Samsung backup (in Settings), and it did surprisingly well. It's like titanium backup in the sense it backs up app data just as you had it originally, but not for everything. Apparently it's dependent on the app developer to allow data to be backed up. So for a lot of stuff, it was like I never wiped my phone, but some of it I had to set up again. And it was all through the cloud which is nice.

[Q] Installed CODEROM but want to change back (Galaxy Ace)

Hi!
I flashed my phone a month ago and have ever since then desperately trying to find help. No luck so far.
I installed 2.3.4 because it wasnt realesed here in sweden. but then the phone became russian and i couldnt use 3g anymore. i went to samfirmware.com and tryed out like every firmware but nothing worked, i tried updating via kies but most of the time it would say that my phone does not support updating via kies, but once it worked and it update back to the russian 2.3.4 firmware, i dont know what to do! please help me.
Are you using a small regional type cell carrier? A friend of mine had a issue much like this before where they rooted their phone and installed CM7 which changed the radio(baseband) and they lost MMS and some other features because the small carrier was not supported. The only way we could get it back was by taking a nandroid backup of same model device from the same carrier that hadn't been touched other than root and restore that onto their phone and that resolved the issue. Not sure if this helps you or not.

Well it helped a luttle, but what do you mean with small carrier and such? i am not very good at english so i dont understand alot. is there a copy of a untouched ace???
What I mean by small carrier is that in the US we have Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile etc. but we also have small carriers like Bluegrass where I live at. With these small carriers if your radio gets updated from a ROM install then it is very hard to find a replacement radio to flash back onto the phone. If this is the case in your scenario then you will need to find someone on the same carrier with the same model phone that has not installed a customer ROM but has rooted their device to make a nandroid backup then restore that to your phone.

UNABLE TO ROOT galaxy note 3!

Hi all,
I have the SM-N9005 Galaxy Note 3 (Snapdragon) running android 4.4.2. I had a bit of a **** up the other day and finally managed to get my phone booting again. My issue now is that I can't seem to root my phone at all.
A copy of SuperSU was installed (by a failed CF-Auto-Root while trying to fix my device), but wouldn't run when I tried it. I've now tried to root the device by:
CF-Auto-Root - Runs smoothly but still no root
Towelroot - Device not supported message
CWM -> Install via zip - Says it worked but root unsuccessful
Kingo - Failed to root
I've tried multiple things now but no matter what I do, the final result will be a device that isn't rooted even if whatever rooting method says it was successful. I also can't run apps that won't run on rooted devices because they think my device is rooted (not sure if this is knox? mine has been tripped).
Anyone have any idea?
Try root genius it works
Downloaded root genius, ran it, everything went perfect and it said "Gratz".
Still no root according to root checker and Xposed. I have Kinguser installed now too which says root access is "ON".

Anyone giving you advice on how to root without knowing your build version of the software you are currently using shouldn't be trying to "help". Since you have not had any success and having leftover apps / files that you can't delete without root means you should reinstall the stock operating system via Odin and restart the process. You absolutely need to be aware of the build version - just saying I have 4.3 or 4.4.2 installed is not enough information and the methods can vary depending on that and even, sometimes, via carrier or region.

Oh man that's how I broke it the first time. I didn't realise I needed version numbers etc, I simply followed te "how to unroot galaxy note 3" guide on galaxynote3root. The guide looked simple enough and linked me to the SM-N9005 firmware so I just followed the instructions. The flash failed in ODIN, phone wouldn't boot, and I was stuck in this mess of trying to learn about all these different ways of flashing with no idea what my version numbers were as I couldn't boot the phone.
After trying to flash all kinds of versions on to it (didn't really have much choice) I luckily stumbled across an old cwm backup, so I got cwm and restored that backup. Turns out it was a backup I did for my ex's phone (also Galaxy Note 3 but from Bulgaria, no idea which model, mine is from UK). I reset factory settings and that's where I am now.
If I post my version numbers here could you show me where to find the right files for Odin? I really had such a hard time trying to figure out what the hell was what with the million different firmware versions...
Model Number: SM-N9005
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: N9005ZHUENE2
Kernel Version: 3.4.0-1955971
Build Number: KOT49H.N9005XXUGNG1
SE for Android Status: Enforcing
Security Software Version: MDF v1.0 Release 3
Edit: Been looking at firmware on sammobile and there's multiple versions of stock for N9005XXUGNG1 in all different languages, the difference is the CSC code however there isn't one for mine (mine seems to be from hong kong or something), does the CSC matter or can I download the United Kingdom N9005XXUGNG1 and flash that regardless of matchng CSC? Or can I fix my CSC? :/
Could someone move this thread to http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/help please I think it would be a better place.

Yea, it does get a little tricky since there are so many different versions of the software for Samsungs like these that are world phones. So your Build Number suggests that it's the version for the UK firmware, yet the baseband is from the Hong Kong region. You mentioned that the Odin install failed so I wouldn't think that the baseband had been changed, suggesting that originally it was an HK phone. With most of the unlocked non-carrier specific Note 3s, you should be able to install the official firmwares from whichever region, though there might be differences in service from the modem/baseband version or apps and languages specific to that region, but these problems should be easily solveable. I think I would try this one: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/38070/N9005XXUGNG1_N9005OXAGNJ3_BTU.zip/ This is the unbranded version for the UK region.

Another thing I was thinking...you obviously have a custom recovery if you restored your gf's backup and tried to install SU that way...why not just pick a custom rom which is already rooted and could contain other fun / useful mods?

No, the full firmware flash has the CSC built in, I just provided the other link for further info. As far as roms, I can't really say. I mod phones for people as part hobby / extra money and don't see the international version often enough to know the roms that well as I tend to just get the carrier specific ones to work on. Now that Lollipop is out for it, looks like there are a lot more choices which we don't have here in the US yet. Just think about what you want to focus on (battery life, mods, stability, etc) and read through the reviews to see if people are experiencing good things. I personally don't care for Touchwiz and the Samsung devices I've owned, I just jump straight to something CM based, but it's not for everyone and you might lose some functionality in some respects (some S-Pen features) and gain it in other places (ability to mod almost everything, slimmer, no bloat, etc) For my customers though, I almost always recommend something stock based as there tends to be less of a learning curve and thus less issues I have to help people navigate through.

Crap, just tried to load that one...same problem I had the first time round. It gets to "system.img.ext4" then fails. My phone will stay on the downloading screen now until I reboot it then I probably can't boot
Phone shows:
UDC START
ODIN: Invalid ext4 image
Odin shows:
<ID:0/004> boot.img
<ID:0/004> recovery.img
<ID:0/004> system.img.ext4
<ID:0/004> FAIL! (Ext4)
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
Edit: Yeah I get "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". Won't work in Kies though it'll say unsupported version.
Edit 2: Tried again with a different cable (official samsung also) and different usb port, same result. Also ran files from desktop instead of usb this time but didn't help.

That' s really odd... Maybe try the HK version then, matching the baseband version you have. Sucks that all the links are so darn slow. You might want to spring for the premium Sammobile account to expedite the process. They have a week membership for 5 pounds and should provide a significant increase in download speeds if you need to get your phone back up in a hurry.
You might try the Emergency mode in Kies to described here: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/faq/FAQ00059169/81100 to see if that helps anything.

Well damn it actually worked! Something is wrong through because apps are crashing and constantly spamming error boxes making it unusable...would it be some compatability thing with it being the kong kong firmware and me in uk? Don't know if it matters whether it's the hong kong one.
"Unfortunately, the process android.process.acore has stopped."
endless spam.
Edit: Ok I reset factory settings and now it works but it's in chinese. If I simply change the language to english is that it? It's the same as having everything back at stock and will work fine in uk? Or can I change to a proper uk stock?

That should be it. You have the same baseband with this version as you had so you should not notice any difference in service or the like. I WAS going to suggest the HK version first but you said you got it in the UK so thought it should work that way. Sorry!

Thanks so much man, this was driving me mad for a few days. One final thing if you don't mind, it's offering me a samsung update to the firmware, it says it's for VoLTE support and after updating the firmware I will be unable to downgrade due to the security policy. Is it fine to update or will it interfere with things in future like using a custom rom?
Thanks again really.

My pleasure. I know how frustrating these things can be and I have a crazy amount of experience with this kind of stuff. You shouldn't have an issue with the update or doing custom things afterwards as the bootloader on that model is not locked, so you would still be able to install a custom recovery and custom rom, if you would like. If it's the 5.0 update, then you might have trouble using KK roms and you definitely can't go back to official 4.4.4 at that point, but it's probably just a minor update for the modem and not the full 5.0 update yet.

Samsung Galaxy S9+ Question

Hello. I am new to the Forum. I recently purchased a Samsung Galaxy S9+ and would like to know what is the best stable root our there? What options are out there to save up battery life, delete unwanted applications and so on. I am a Apple user and I am here to learn about Android, rooting and other types of tips and tricks.
Thank you.
Just read and read this forum because rooting and custom rom specific to your device type. Just remember:
1. Custom recovery (TWRP) then backup EFS immediately. Copy somewhere either PC or cloud, this is your imei. Without imei, no call and sms. Then you can flash whatever custom rom that match your device.
2. Do not flash anything that're not for your device specifically. Always check and recheck G965f or G9650 or G960.
3. Upgrade or downgrade version should be on official. 8.0 to 8.1 should flash official 8.0 -> official 8.1 -> custom 8.1. Some may result blank imei. If you've backup EFS, relax, just flash last rom you remember with your imei intact then restore EFS.
These are the basic rules. Backup EFS, device type check, version match.
Why do you think you need to root? I mean, coming from iPhone, the S9+ is going to do so much more than the Apple. There's very little need to root in 2019.
Make sure you do your research fully, rooting trips Knox and will result in some apps not working (you can hide the root from the apps do they work, but knox is a physical switch so cannot revert once done).
I would recommend reading up on SABS as this allows you to block ads and disable unwanted apps/ services without rooting.

I want to experience its full performance. I have played with it and honestly the camera is bad, battery drains so much faster than the iPhone, the ram always goes low and so on. I want to get rid of all the bloatware, save battery so it lasts for at least a day and just enjoy the phone.

Exactly, i haven't rooted my phone since the nexus 5 and i really don't miss it. There are ways of blocking ad's with knox and disabling apps/services with regular apps.

To disable bloatware, you don't have to root, install package disable from playstore.

If i put a AT&T Sim card in, the AT&T boot will start. If I put in a T-Mobile sim card in, the T-Mobile boot will start and so on.

AT&T unlocking and non-ATT image

Hi,
First some intel:
I got my Duo device in a raffle and it happened to come from AT&T. It is locked to the AT&T network and unlocking had to be done via the helpdesk and couldn't be done for their website. The IMEI number isn't recognized. So, be aware that you really need to direct the helpdesk what to do in order to get it unlocked; they will tell you it's not an AT&T device.
So, finally, I got it unlocked. Yet....now there's AT&T bloatware on the device. So, what I want to do is put the original MS image back on the device. I have the following questions:
I need to supply the serial number in order to download the image from the Microsoft site. When I do that, it gives me the AT&T image.
1) if I put the AT&T image on the phone (which is already there, so I don't want to do that), will it root my phone?
2) what about the original MS image? Will it make permanent changes to the bootloader? Will it root my phone? (I don't want my phone rooted - I want a Duo with the original MS software, not with the AT&T nonsense installed).
Finally, where do I get the original image? I emailed Microsoft, but they say "it may damage the software" if I put the non AT&T image on the device. This is obviously a weird answer, but it shows they can't advise me on how to proceed.
Thank you!
Nothing about flashing stock firmware will root your device. That requires an explicit action aimed at rooting. As for flashing the non-att firmware, it should work just fine, if you cant get the phone to accept it. You could try using a serial number from a non-att device. At some point im sure there will be flashable firmware posted up here...it may require unlocking bootloader, then relocking when you have switched. Is OEM-unlocking available on the att model?

Thank you for your clear reply. I understand things better now.
Yes, the AT&T version looks to have an unlockable bootloader, although I haven't activated it.
anyone try this yet? does it work? would love to lose the att bloat ware. also still looking for an unlocking solution (recieved a replacement from microsoft that att will not unlock, device is paid for etc)

I too would be interested in any reports. I'm expecting the AT&T version from the Woot.com special last week, but am not an AT&T customer. My planned usage will be to use the Duo on WiFi only. Getting rid of the AT&T bloatware would be ideal. Thanks in advance....
So can someone who has unlocked version download from Microsoft website using his serial number the non att version of image and share with us?
here is the link to get image
Surface Recovery Image Download - Microsoft Support

It would be great if someone can get us a copy to try. I'd also like to see what version comes down for everyone. The latest I can get from the recovery site is 2021.419.71, but an update to 2021.525.63 is available. When I spoke to Microsoft, they said that recovery image won't be available until August at the earliest... So I can't even restore my device if needed.

I will like to try the Microsoft image on my unlocked AT&T phone. Anyone can help to pull down the image? Do not understand why Microsoft remove eSim from AT&T variant
Hi,
Are you still willing to download stuff and try to flash your AT&T with non AT&T firmware ?
I'd be very much interested in the result and can provide the recovery image from non AT&T version.
Regards.
H again,
So no one who tried this ? If someone did, can he share results please ? That would be super interesting for the whole community I guess.
Regards.

How do I flash latest firmware without losing data when showing multiple CSC's?

I'm kinda new to this and basically I haven't updated my phone in...forever. I was still on Android 11 and last night started doing updates on the phone. It is originally from Verizon but I'm using it with a T-mobile sim now. Well after one of the updates it asked me something like "Do you want to switch to the T-Mobile version?" and I hit yes.
So now I realized I'd rather just flash the latest firmware instead of doing 18 more long updates on my phone, but the CSC is showing TMB/TMB, VZW/VZW. I don't have everything backed up and don't want to lose my data so which one should I use? I've downloaded the latest TMB version, if I flash it with that instead of VZW is there a chance I'll lose my data? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

I don't think it will, as it shouldn't even touch the partition with your apps and data. I mean, you're on stock, right? I highly doubt Samsung wouldn't even warn you about data loss.
