Change display DPI in Easy Projection desktop mode - Huawei Mate 10 Questions & Answers

I recently got a Nexdock 2 to go with my Note9 and really wanted to try out Easy Projection so picked up a Mate 10 Pro, which indecently I am really enjoying - it's fast and still has great battery life and I'm using it as my main device for now.
Easy Projection is working OK but the main downside compared to DeX is the display DPI that it outputs, can this be changed. In DeX apps like outlook give me a "truer" desktop feel but it isn't as good with EP. Can I change it?

What does this app do?
It allows to change the resolution and the pixels density of the screen to pre-defined settings according to standard screen aspect ratios
Why is this useful?
- Watching Video on an external monitor/tv using the hdmi output will usually mirror the screen content without correcting for aspect ratio, by setting the correct resolution and pixel density of the screen to match the monitor/tv allows to fill the entire external screen and avoid the side black bars.
- Playing games on an external monitor/tv: normally, the device will render the games to the full resolution available on the device's screen. On the case of the Nexus 10, games will be rendered to its huge resolution of 2560x1600 and then it will be scaled down to the monitor/tv screen resolution wasting GPU prepossessing power and resulting on more heat and power consumption during gaming. By reducing the screen resolution to match the external monitor/tv less processing power is needed to render the game at the lower monitor/tv's resolution, many games will even use the extra processing power available for more effects or more frames per second (depending on the game, no established by this app).
- Simulate other screen resolutions and pixel density for android developers to test their applications on the physical device and observe how their application will look on other devices.
Available options:
-Manual Settings: Allows to manually select the desired resolution and pixel density according to pre-defined standard aspect ratios.
-Auto Detection: Will run in the background and will detect HDMI connections and disconnections. On a HDMI connection detected, a notification will be presented to apply the detected screen resolution and pixel density appropriate for your screen. On a HDMI disconnection, the notification will allow to return to the device's default settings.
Reboot Mode: New Soft Reboot will only reboot the graphical interface not the entire system (Fast). Normal Full Reboot (safest, use if you find interface issues with the Soft Reboot).
Screen Size: Define your screen size (affects dpi calculation). This setting comes pre-defined for the nexus 10, but you should change it to match your screen size on other devices.
HDMI Resolution Preset: Define your preferred output resolution instead of using the Auto-Detection option .
New Default Settings: The default settings will now reset the dpi value to the factory configuration. It appears that the nexus 10 comes from factory with a dpi setup to 320 instead of 300. The new reset feature should also work for other devices.
Auto DPI Selection: No more guessing work, it will select the appropriate dpi value for the selected resolution and the screen size defined on the settings.
Screen OFF feature: Allows you turn your device's screen off while keeping the output to the hdmi to reduce the power usage. To turn the screen back ON just press the power button twice or simply disconnect the hdmi.
Touchless Profile: It applies the profile automatically upon hdmi connection without user interaction.
- The profile can either auto detect the TV resolution or apply the preset resolution
- If selected, it will turn the screen off automatically when the hdmi is in use.
- On hdmi disconnection, the screen settings will automatically return to default.
What is New
New Recovery Feature: Recovers the default screen setting after an user specified number of power/charger connections. Will restore the device if the user applied a configuration not supported by the device.
To trigger the recovery feature, plug and unplug the power/charger to the device allowing ~1s between plug/unplug as many times as defined on the settings menu, default is 3 times.
v1.27:
- New Recovery Feature to restore default setting upon cycling the power connection 3 times at ~1s between connections.
- Fixed interface issues on Nexus 7 2013.
- Support for small screens up to 3.5"
- New first time setup to ensure the user select the appropriate screen size of their devices.
- Added the screen size to the current settings display.
v1.26: Improved the Preset Resolution Input dialog to avoid incorrect inputs.
v1.25: - Improved support for devices that are naturally oriented in portrait mode (i.e. nexus 7, cellphones, etc).
- Added more resolutions, specially to support smaller devices and cellphones.
- Added "Touchless Profile" option.
v1.24: - fixed a crash issue happening on devices that did not have BusyBox installed. if you don't have busybox installed, the app will now prompt you to install it.
- fixed the Auto-Brightness feature that was awakening the screen for some devices on ambient light changes.
- Added Screen Turn OFF request for support on devices where screen turn off is not yet supported.
v1.23:
-Improved screen OFF detection mode to support more devices. Allows you turn your device's screen off while keeping the output to the hdmi to reduce the power usage
v1.22:
-Screen OFF feature.
v1.21:
-Adjusted App's interface for portrait and landscape mode, and smaller screens.
-Back compatibility with JB 4.2
-Added preset button on main application
v1.2:
- Auto DPI Selection.
- Reboot Mode Selection.
- Screen Size Selection.
- HDMI resolution Preset option.
v1.01: Code cleaning
v1.0: Initial Release
Why a reboot is needed to apply the new screen settings?
- For now the safest way to restore the entire Interface with the new resolution and pixel density is to reboot the system. The new Soft Reboot should reduce considerably the time required to reset the interface.
MOD EDIT: Link to Google Play Removed due to XDA advertising paid app/theme policy. OP can check for PM from me.
This sounds like an interesting app!
Gonna try it out, but I have a few questions, does the resolution change happen only when connected to a HDMI output? Are there any benefits to having a lower res for say regular daily use of the tablet, say like not hogging the gpu or lowering the gpu temperature?
Also, according to Xda rules you shouldn't advertise paid apps here, you either have to make a free trial or this post will get removed, but I would love to keep the thread alive...

s1m4an,
I did not know about the paid app rules for posting at this forum; however, I am planning to release a trial or beta version specially to bring support to other devices.
You can change the resolution at any moment (without HDMI connected) by opening the app and selecting the desired resolution and pixel density and then apply the changes.
The HDMI detection just allows you to change the settings to match the detected external screen automatically without having to worry about what resolution and density you should select.
Lowering the resolution will definitely reduce the GPU utilization and GPU power consumption (heat generated) especially at graphic intensive apps like games, even at 1080p the GPU needs to render half the amount of pixels than the default resolution. I have tested this with games and I generally gain frames per second or I am able to increase the detail level of the game effects. In normal usage, GPU utilization will also be reduced but I will imagine that non graphic intensive applications will not give you such drastic difference, probably watching movies will.
Another benefit is that it allows you to test how applications will look on other devices, if you are a developer.
Thanks for the comment,
Yes i would be great if there was a trial version or something like that.. It sounds interesting..
Hi forbitel, I bought your app and I like it so far. Works fine with stock 4.3 and it's a very easy way to have a true full screen 16:9 trough HDMI. Shame to Google for giving a stupid 16:10 aspect ratio to our HDTVs.
I have better results with 16:9 2560x1400 with my tv
Setting 1920x1080 creates a weird interface in the tablet. Looks like a old phone launcher...
What I would like to see in a future update is to set a favourite resolution when HDMI is detected so we don't have to go to the app every time we want to change it.
Good work!

Yes I saw the update. Thank you!
I'll try in the next hours.
But now I have a problem. I use the keyboard app "Swiftkey Tablet" and even after several reboots, going to default resolution and reinstalling the app, it's size is like 3 times the normal. It's like the app thinks I'm still in 1920x1080 and not in the default 2560x1600. And I can't use it...
The stock keyboard works fine.
I'll post a screenshot later!
Edit:
Maybe reinstalling the app was not the solution (it may keep settings in SDmemory). I'll try to erase app data and reinstall.
Edit 2: Solved.
But I really want to thank you for this app. Now I can use Nexus 10 as decent multimedia player with my TV.
New problem: sometimes I have to apply and reboot up to 3 times to get the desired resolution. I have to test more...

What specific resolution and density are you trying to set? is it through the main application window or through the hdmi notification?
I see you updated the app again.
First try and success, resolution changed fine.
I'll try more.
With this latest update everything works great. 1 reboot needed to change resolution and its very easy to have a preset one.
Sounds like a really useful app. Unfortunately I don't really want to pay for until I know it works for me. I will probably pay once the app matures after a few updates.

Well, the updates are coming non stop. It works perfectly fine now and the latest update brought a great new feature: Screen off with hdmi out active.
With this app we can have finally a serious media player with the nexus 10.
Congrats to the developer.
@forbitel
Can you tell me what's the shell command (that you have implemented in the app) to "soft"reboot the GUI?

How did you solve the keyboard problem? I was seeing the same thing but could not find a solutuion.
And what screen resolution settings are you using now that will work perfectly with your TV?

mrruin,
I have tested few popular keyboards from the market and found the following:
- Google Keyboard: Adjust the best out all I have tested, it consistently adjust with changes of screen resolution.
- SlideIT: Somewhat adjusting to the screen resolution changes, works better than Swype and SwiftKey.
- Swype: do not dynamically adjust to screen changes, some resolutions works but wont adjust to the screen on 1080p.
- SwiftKey: do not dynamically adjust to screen changes, some resolutions works but wont adjust to the screen on 1080p.
I would recommend you use Google Keyboard when changing the resolution of the device, until these keyboards are fixed for resolution changes.
Where can I get that wallpaper?? That looks really cool.
So when are you going to release the trial betsa version like you said you would ? It has been almost 2 months

Nexus 5 slimport HDMI
Has anyone had any luck changing the HDMI resolution?
On a Nexus 5 or any other device?
I have tried all combination of settings i can think of but it either boot loops or resolution stays on 1080p.
Im guessing when it boot loops with the cable plugged in its trying to output 720p but doesn't like it much.
I'd like to provide some sort of log if would be useful.

[Q] Microbes LWP mod

Hello there, i loved to use the Microbes live wallpaper back in the day on my old galaxy phones.
Now i use a note 4 with a 2K display, and this microbes wallpaper is really tiny, its hard to see em move and eat the dots.
Now my question is, can i change the DPI/Resolution of the LWP alone? or does it automaticly scale to my OS's DPI/Resolution settings?
EDIT: i found a work around using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-gltools-1-29-t2828630
You can change resolution per app and works great, also works for games to increase framerates by lowering the resolution.
PS:For the GearVR ppl out there this does not break the Oculus services like an Xposed module would.

MY fist 24 Hours with MI8 (global)

Wanted to share with you some experience with the very nice phone from Xiaomi, and my first impressions are:
- Very nice look, excellent finish.
- Nice value and really high performance.
- Speedy unlock - either fingerprint or face - do not need to touch anything to get the phone unlocked via face recognition, however to enable face unlock I had to change the region of the phone to get it in options.
- very decent battery
But...
- Google assistant does not support "OK Goggle unlock" and voice control (seems not to work with all MIUI phones?)
- Widevine L3 - so NO HD Netflix or Amazon video
- Wide notch - is this the problem - anyway no notifications on top of display - so I have to pull down on top to see what is going on..?
- AMOLED display vastly inferior to Galaxy display - very washed out videos in direct compare
- Till now it seems for me impossible to implement the ported stock dialers (phone) to get the look and feel of stock Android.
- Camera disappointed me - cannot understand the DxoMark rating of 99 ??? In direct comparison with my Galaxy S8, very poor in low light, and despite OIS very shaky videos - Xiaomi desperately need EIS implementation.
- It was very tricky to implement multilingual setup, some bugs in MIUI perhaps.
- I have Xiaomi BT headset, but the sound paired with MI8 on this unit is too low. Also the call volume is a little to soft, wished the earpiece would be louder.
So, as I've stated much more negative comments, seems as not satisfied with the phone, what is not true, but these observations are really there and making some problems in real life.
And after a lot of playing I still do not know how to change the default icon look on the phone (needed for ported pixel launcher), since when applying different themes only the MIUI launcher displays new icons.
Any comments from other users?

Just a summary from another Mi8 owner:
- Google assistant does not support "OK Goggle unlock" and voice control (seems not to work with all MIUI phones?)
you complain about "ok google" doesn't work on a Chinese smartphone? Really?
- Widevine L3 - so NO HD Netflix or Amazon video
Widevine L3 was never supported on a xiaomi smartphone, nor a Mi6 nor a Mi5s. Why should a chinese phone support DRM from Netflix or amazon?
- Wide notch - is this the problem - anyway no notifications on top of display - so I have to pull down on top to see what is going on..?
did you buy the device without having seen it? Notch was known ....
- AMOLED display vastly inferior to Galaxy display - very washed out videos in direct compare
In my opinion, I love the display, it hasn't an exaggerated saturation as Samsung and its lot better than a Oneplus5T Display.
- Till now it seems for me impossible to implement the ported stock dialers (phone) to get the look and feel of stock Android.
There is no Guarantee to install google phone on every smartphone. Just for me, i've installed xiaomi.eu rom and can install the google phone dialer offically from google play store without limitations.
- Camera disappointed me - cannot understand the DxoMark rating of 99 ??? In direct comparison with my Galaxy S8, very poor in low light, and despite OIS very shaky videos - Xiaomi desperately need EIS implementation.
Can't really understand this point, i've compared this cam round about two weeks with a Huawei P20 Pro and JUST FOR ME: the Mi8 cam is better, the AI on the Huawei device is horrible and in low light situations i can't see no advantages too. Maybe the P20 pro is better in some conditions BUT compared with the price the MI8 is more better !
Here is my comparison of P20 Pro and Mi8, everything on AUTO and just Point and shoot:

Thank you for your thoughts, but..

Mi other Xiaomi (A2) does support "Ok Google".
>BUT compared with the price the MI8 is more better !
This is Definitely true - amazing value.

Xiaomi MI A2 is a really good example why "Ok Google" works, it doesn't run Xiaomis Miui. It runs Android One, its a stock android fork and it would be a misstake when "Okay Google" wont work here....
Try the camera with xiaomi.eu MIUI 10 Stable. MIUI Global for Mi 8 is a big joke with a lot of problems and missing features. The DXO review was made with the Chaina ROM, that is why it shoots good/great.
I'm a happy Mi 8 user with the latest stable xiaomi.eu. After 1 month of using it: Mi 8 is not the best phone, but for this price, it's unbeatable right now and probably in the near future among the flagships.
Best regards!
After 3 months with Mi8
Summarized - A great phone!
- Screen is very good balanced - normal colors, nice.
- Battery durability is much better then expected, keeping it charged for 45 minutes a day.
- very snappy. Quick to browse.
- WiFi has very good reception.
- camera is excellent, but telephoto not very usable in lower light conditions (due to lack of OIS)
Never had any problem with this phone, which is - from my experience - very rare in praxis.
Hope to get Pie and camera update soon.
I hab similar experience with miui 10 global. Can't wait to unlock :|
Camera ist not good. Many bugs like Bluetooth disconnecting and big standby battery drain. App crashes. Always on display not working.
I also don't get why they don't display notification icons, it's so easy to do.
What I really like are the full screen gestures but that's about it lol

1. Google Assistant isn't working for a ton of phones, Samsung ones included. It's a GA bug.
2. No idea why they didn't certify L1...which is FREE!
3. The display is great, the only problem is with the older ROM, HDR isn't enabled yet so HDR videos look absolutely crap. Android Pie update has fixed this somewhat.
4. The Mi 8 has both OIS and EIS, and videos are very stable from my tests.
The other points aren't relevant to me so I hope they fix it for you.

Here I am with good news!
1. Google Assistant is now working (always on listening)
2. - yeah no change possible
3. Huge difference after last update, HDR videos look gorgeous!
4. As I said before, without telephoto, it's very stable. And now camera is working much better, even the night mode is very nice and if needed 960fps slow-mo is available.
This is a much better phone now!

There's an issue with HDR if you have not noticed with the update. If you watch HDR videos during night time, the whole system turns a yellow tinge (Night/Reading mode OFF). When you quit the video, the system UI turns back to white. I've tested this, and the system returns itself to normal at 7.14am (I don't know why lol). It's as if HDR somehow forces Reading Mode on during night time, even if you have it turned off.
Global miui 10 8.12.20 beta,
No issues with ok Google (no unlock though)
Camera is excellent
Notch is too wide
Ported stock apps work (Google dialer, Google camera with night sight)
Got 300,737 in antutu, basically rivalling a Kirin 980 (ok I was outside in 4C temperature running it)
As for MIUI, previously owning an honor 9, I got rid of EMUI as soon as possible , I actually don't mind MIUI 10, it's not very intrusive, and is fairly minimalist, paired with ruthless launcher and a pixel icon pack, I might actually keep MIUI after I unlock the bootloader

>No unlock with assistant is problematic a little
>Which Google Camera is Working for you? Is it better the na new stock?
no need to check benchmarks, MI8 runs very fast.
A feature which would i welcome is a ported pixel 3 launcher which works (with assistant button)
Otherwise might be the best phone for the money. A big difference to slightly lower cost Pocophone (display and camera are really much better)

Indeed, no unlock is a bit meh, but at least Assistant/Google Voice works now.

for the pixel launcher, just download the modded APK from ApkMirror, this is the latest version, should work fine https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/papho...tless-pixel-2-launcher-mod-9-4889482-release/ Although, to be fair, i much prefer ruthless launcher, as it offers a few more features over the stock pixel launcher, unfortunately, you do need to install the pixel bridge fro assistant to work though.
I'd check the cameras, but my screen decided that working was not in its job description, so (luckily) i am getting a replacement device from amazon (still within returns window), should be with me tomorrow, so i'll test, but as far as i can tell, from taking a few pictures before it died, the stock camera seems very good, especially in the dark, i took a few pictures in an almost completely black room, upped the exposure, and got some rather nice (abeit a bit blurry, because i cant hold a phone still for 4 seconds it seems) images. This was on global beta 8.12.20, so may not be the same as stable 10.1.2.
I will say though, that the secondary lens, switched to using it independently (there's a setting for telephoto somewhere in the camera app), isn't very good in low light, and doesn't have brilliant saturation, but i think its a software thing, need to wait until there are a few 3rd part camera apps that can use both cameras, given pie offers an API to do that now.

Cannot find a ported Pixel 3 Launcher which would work on my MI8.
Using the rootless launcher, but missing the assistant button on search bar...
Do you have a link to a working port?

try ruthless launcher https://labs.xda-developers.com/store/app/com.ruthless.nexuslauncher
you need to download rootless pixel bridge from github too
if you want a stock pixel launcher, just try an earlier version of the one on APKmirror, just scroll down until you get to the list of versions
Seems you have not understood me...
I am using thee rootless launcher from the first date and it works very good, but I'm missing the Assistand button on the search bar...

ah, ok, have you actually got google assistant enabled, you actually need to open the assistant app at least once and set it up for it to work properly, or do you mean that the button isn't there in the search bar, because if so, that's a bit odd since it worked fine for me, to be fair, i'd just say switch over to ruthless launcher, i personally think its a bit better (although i do miss the 'right click' menu on long press of background), since the assistant button is built into the launcher, i cant see any reason why it shouldn't be there, possibly its an OS issue, i was on global beta 10.12.20, if you are on the chinese ROM it might not work, not without google services installed properly at least.

everything works about assistant (voice or button activated), I'm on global ROM. Just there is no specific assitant button on the right side of the search bar. I'm on MIUI 10.1.2.0 stable.
If there would be an specific assistant button I'd be able to switch to gesture control.

Changing aspect ratio from 18 by 9 to 16 by 9.

I will be using my phone as a desktop computer. I will connect it to a monitor but my monitor just like most monitors have a 16 by 9 aspect ratio. Now when I mirror my phone, it creates a black bars on top and bottom because the phone aspect ratio is wider. I want to change phone aspect ratio to 16 by 9 too. Anyway to do this? By the way, I'm using Andromium's Sentio Desktop app to change my UI to a desktop appropriate one so it looks good on the big monitor. If you guys have a better idea on turning my phone to desktop, please share too. Thanks in advance!

Galaxy Tab S3 - Huge subtitle size

Hello!
I just bought a used galaxy tab s3 to replace my kindle fire HD10. Overall I am in love with the device and the screen but there is one annoyance i am not able to sort out properly.
Basically subtitle size in vlc and Netflix apps is huge. I reduced screen zoom and font size to minimum and even downloaded a new font from Samsung, but still is way too big. Eventually, I managed to sort of fix it by changing the size to small in vlc, but in Netflix I had to change size on the account and this is all for all devices.
I would like to know if you all are having the same issue and if you also notice subs are really big specially in Netflix. And if you have a better solution than reducing the size in the account settings from Netflix.
Thanks!!!!
If this is not possible on the samsumg rom, any recommendation for custom roms that has minimal amount of bugs?
