New Unified Microsoft Office App Supports Dual Screen - LG G8X ThinQ Themes, Apps, and Mods

Was just re-reading a chapter from my dissertation and went to go read it in the new Office app (unified Word, PP, Excel, Sticky Notes, and Office Lens + some other stuff). Planning on reading while changing songs in Spotify I opened the document and three finger swiped to send it to the secondary screen and it sent the document but kept the home menu on the main screen. If I open another document it does close the previous document on the secondary screen and open the new document on the primary screen. If I close the menu on the main screen to open another app, leaving the document on the main screen, it'll keep the document up as if the app was started on the second screen. I think Microsoft is starting to add dual screen support to their apps and lucky for us some of that code seems to work on the G8X. I think whatever code allows this is the same code that makes it so that on Samsung Dex and other Android desktops it open the document in a new app window vs in the same app window as the menu. I've noticed this behavior in a few Microsoft apps but nowhere else in Dex. I'm sure others have discussed this but it seems like LG basically treats the other screen as an external monitor which take up every new "window" apps produce or is produced by the system when you open something on the second screen. This might also be why other launchers don't work because they can't/don't produce new "windows" that can be put there. Anyways, sorry for ranting on but this is super interesting to me. Thoughts (especially from developers who might actually know the nuts and bolts of this)? Edit: I did a bit more investigation with other MS office apps on Android and none of them exhibit this same behavior even the Word app which on Dex I believe does pop a new window when opening documents like the Office app. Obviously this throws my later theory about windows into doubt.

Maybe this is in preparation for the Surface Duo. BTW can you share any pictures of the new Office on your G8X?

I was the one who originally posted this on the LG G8X subreddit (not sure why this is copy-pasted here like this but I'm a new user here so search the title of this post and you'll find the Reddit thread). I'll upload a screenshot (or screen recording) for you when I get a chance! But yes I think this is definitely prep for the Duo.

Here you go! Sorry about the background audio. But as you can see the app opens a new window when opening documents and can do two different type of docs at the same time. But if you try and open another of the same document type it'll replace the current window. Google Docs work the same except you can open two of the same document type without one overlapping the other.

[APP] Lolcats viewer - UPDATE 15/08/09

Just a little application I've been working on to get back into programming, using xml (it uses the rss feed from icanhascheezburger.com), some image processing (scaling mainly) and threading (to make the interface able respond and update while downloading).
This is the first functional release of this program, I think without any (major) bugs. The next releases will focus on cleaning up the code to the point where I can release the source for all to tinker with.
It's built for devices with the .NET Compact Framework 3.5, so if it doesn't work, make sure you have the right version of the compact framework installed.
Features:
- resolution independant, will work on all possible resolutions (even unconventional ones) because the interface is scaled (though there is not much of an interface).
- works on both touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices: swipe left/right to switch images and tap the image to open it with the native viewer (to zoom and/or save it to disk), or do the same with the hardware dpad left/right/enter.
Ofcourse, if you find any bugs, feel free to drop a message inhere.
UPDATES:
Version 1.0.1 now available for download!
Changes:
- New right softkey menu allows for updating the RSS feed and exiting
- Left softkey brings a random lolcat for you to laugh at
Great stuff now I can haz lolz on ma fone
hahaha great app
edit: a randomization would be nice ...
Definitely gonna grab this.
But what I have been wanting is an app that lets you create your own. Take a picture, caption it (with different font syles, and placements) and save it, or send it... or even reopen it and re-edit it.
I see way too many funny things in my daily travels, and wanna share it.
Screens would be nice.
nice tiny 14k app
the other day i came across a 250k app that just turns wifi on/off. kudos mate
rofl i always wondered where to get these picz, now i has da link
nice app, hilarious indeed
Great app!
I was going to point out a bug where the latest post wasnt showing in the app, but I checked and it seems that it's not in the rss feed so it's all good.
I'd love to see the source code, I'm working on an app which would really benefit from being able to swipe left and right between forms, and I'm interested in how the images are scaled. If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to have a peek at it
Excellent idea!
Im am sorry in advance, but I just HAD to... ^Yº

Actually, I think I just had a brainwave - I'm going to play about with MouseUp and MouseDown and recording MousePositon to detect a gesture.
It worked, thanks for the inspiration
WOW Great idea I always wanted a wall mounted screen dedicated to lolcats, until that happens pocket size will do
Thanks all for the replies. I doubted if I should post this as I only made it as a test for myself, but now I'm glad I did. In the next few days I'll be cleaning up the code, and per request I'll add a random lolcat-function.
Oh, and StarMonkee: that's exactly what I did, when MouseDown is triggered I record the position, and when MouseUp is triggered I check the difference and if the difference is bigger than 20 (or something like that) I go to the next, if it's smaller than -20 I go to the previous. If it's in between those two the movement is not big enough and it's recognized as a tap. I'm not sure on if the values were 20 and -20, but it's something like that I think

thanks for this app, i effin LOVE lolcats....

Updated, now with Kin Loop! See below
KinLauncher is exactly what it sounds like: A kin-style theme for Windows Mobile. The screen is very simple (and fast), featuring the following customizable buttons:
Messages
Phone
Email
Browser
Music
Camera
Settings
Alarm Clock
Recent
The Spot
The settings for these links can be changed in \Windows\kin_config.txt
Instructions are simple: Download the cab (below), run on your phone, go to Start Menu -> kinlauncher, and your set!
The default settings are configured for the HD2, if someone can make a configuration for other devices, that would be great!
The Loop version
Now you can have all your friends status messages on your homescreen! Install the KinLoopSetup.CAB file, login to Facebook, and then swipe Right. It's beta, so give me feedback!
Also, clicking the Spot now takes you to a custom Facebook update screen. Try it out!

Unlike my WP7 theme, it was meant sortof as a filler for older devices (gotta find some use for my 8525..). Also, if anyone with a Kin could get me some high-quality screenshots, that would greatly help the quality.
Thanks.

A few comments though:
This wasn't intended as a full-blown UI. But apparently there's a market for such, so I'll work on some improvements, such as message notifications, the Loop, Facebook links, etc.
this is going to be awesome on the HD2 especially when the loop and facebook are put into it

It's an app, you run it and the screen appears. Closing the app puts you back to Sense or Manilla or Windows Default or w/e.
Added "The Loop", works fine for me but want some feedback. Install the KinLoopSetup.cab file, log into Facebook, close the window, and click OK. After a few seconds your friend's status' should appear if you swipe right.
thank you~~~this is very good~~~

NewsSpot for Google Reader -[R]- 2013-02-01 -[U]- 2012-02-01 -[V]- 3.0

NewsSpot for Google Reader was just released for Windows Phone 8.
This is the Windows Phone 8 update of my app NewsSpot, which is already quite some time available for WP7 (see this thread). Besides the features listed in the other post, NewsSpot for Windows Phone 8 adds the following:
Full lock screen integration with quick and detailed status as well as background image. All updating in the background.
Pin sharp live tiles including the new wide tile style
Fast app resume
New splash screen
All graphics now in high resolution
The usual bug fixes
You can download it here:

}
I'm looking forward to your feedback!
There is an add-supported version which is restricted to sync max. 200 unread and 50 starred articles, whereas the full version supports up to 1000 unread or starred articles. Additionaly the lock screen background is only available in the full version.
Issue with a live tile.
First of all great app!!! It's FAST and I found the ui is very user friendly. My only gripe right now is the live tile not updating correctly. I setup one group and it is currently saying I have 1000+ unread articles. And putting the live tile into "medium size" actually cuts off the logo. Other than that the app is awesome and is definitely my daily driver for news! Thanks!

Thanks! I'm glad you to hear like NewsSpot.
Yeah, the 1000+ is actually a limitation by the Google Reader API, since it reports the unread counts only up to this limit. There are ways to get around this limitation, but implementing it is awkward (you have to do one web request for every tile instead of getting all unread counts at once).
The cutoff is intended, as I think knowing the number is more important than seeing the logo Otherwise I would have to move the number or make the font smaller, which somehow breaks the default styling of the tiles.

is there any way for a google reader app to pre-download/fetch the full article so i can read it when i do not have a connection?
Thanks

I get this request indeed more often recently. Technically it should not be that difficult, since all the code is already in place for caching the article previews and their images. I will see what I can do

Any update?
Well, I'm currently involved in two other projects, so the next updates of NewsSpot might need some time to be released. However, I'm sure it will come this year.
Regards
As you will have already noticed, Google is shutting down its Reader service by the 1st of July. However, this does in no way mean NewsSpot will be retired, too. Please read our Statement to see what's next for NewsSpot.
It's been already a while that we released an update, so here are the news:
(WP8 only) Raised limit of number of synced articles to 2.000 for each starred and reading list
(WP8 only) Added share via QR-code
YouTube videos are started without using an external app
Improved sharing via phone services
Long hold an item in the article list to share it
Accelerated switching between articles
(WP8 only) Fixed bug: autosync on start works again
Happy reading!

[SOLVED] Being forced to save contacts to google account?!

Hello all,
I've spent over an hour fiddling with my phone + searching the forums and google to no avail.
Issue: I'm forced to save contacts to google acct. which is NOT what I want.
Objective: I'd like to save them directly to SIM card only.
ROM: JellyBeer 3.57.3
Options: Accounts Sync is off (nothing is syncing)
Thanks in advance.
Bump!
when you add a contact, it ask you very clearly if you want to save the contact to your google account or not. This is basic android operating....I will not post another reply or even open this thread .............I'm going to to take an asprin......opening a thread around here is like playing russian roulette these days
btw, the time between you opening this thread and you bumping your own thread (double posting...just rude) could have been used to actually read what was showing up on your phone screen and/or using google to figure out the answer. I wish I had the time to post questions and and wait for other people to give me the answers to my problems. Must be nice
Re: [Q] Being forced to save contacts to google account?!

In that same square to the right of your email address is a small triangle(arrow). Select it and it will bring up a menu allowing you to select "Google", "Sim", and "Phone." Unless the JellyBeer ROM does not have that option.

Nice add, this is something Cortana should be able to do, speaking of which, is it possible to integrate this with cortana?

Did you mean have a search box where you can speak the search terms? Or try to have Cortana read out the search results?
Integration with Cortana is something we had not given a though about at all so far. It's a really nice suggestion for a future update.

Maybe something like, ask cortana, "search for an image", then it opens a window to open the gallery for the image selection, and cortana returns the results. But either way, its a great app. Just thought I'd throw an suggestion your way

That seems pretty neat. Not aware that we could do that. This is something we will surely look into it. And we really appreciate your feedback
The clock app does that with the time, not sure if image search can, but that would be awesome
Just a tip: you can of course use the "Open" voice command, as in "Open reverse image search", and the phone will run it for you if it's installed (whether or not you have Cortana).

Yes that should work fine. We will otherwise surely try to integrate Cortana in a future release.
