Any owners take a peek at the bootloader yet? - LG V60 ThinQ Questions & Answers

So thread title is self explanatory. Really thinking of getting this phone as my next device but wondering about potential root/ROMs down the road or if it's already putting up a wall saying "ain't gonna happen bro".
Then again, is root even "worth it" these days? I've sort have been living under a rock for a while with the whole scene and wouldn't mind some insight.
Thanks for any tips.

Tmobile variant here, tried adb reboot bootloader and the device rebooted to the system. This is after I toggled OEM unlock in the developers setting. LG on the lockdown.

Took a look at the g8 thread, adb reboot doesn't go to bootloader, some people had success with a combo. Reminds me of the G6, you can access it but the bootloader commands won't respond.

Huh, funky. I've yet to own an LG device so their history is admittedly a blind spot of mine.
Guess that brings me around to the other half of my question (and this is personal opinion only) - Is root even worth the fuss these days?

I stopped worrying about root when I couldn't use my banking/cc apps and Google pay. They would all tell me it was unsecure. Also play store started putting uncertified in device and that blocked alot of apps from being able to download. Sideloading is getting more and more sketchy. Screw it, not worth it to me. I know I could just go on the bank/cc websites, but in my eyes, it's more hassle than it's worth anymore.

I'm kinda getting that feeling myself as well, but I'm just not a fan of bloatware from my carrier or being at their mercy for OS updates.
I mainly use root for system wide ad-blocking, some customizations, maintenance, and performance tweaking. Never really saw any apps or games worth "sailing the high seas" over and have only ever run into issues with a handful of apps being cranky about root (which is usually my cue to not support them at all...I'M LOOKING AT YOU, POKÉMON GO).

Yeah, for bloat you can install with
Code:
Adb shell
Then >>
Code:
$ pm uninstall --user 0 <app package>
Example:
Code:
$ pm uninstall --user 0 com.facebook.appmanager
It is just the lack of customization, like the colors, really bad themes from SmartWorld, launcher, navigation, fonts, limited second screen implmentation etc..
The idea of using the phone as LG intended is like giving you a Ferrari and telling you that you can't go more than 25mph for power users.

Oh sweet, thanks for the shell commands. I really appreciate it.
Also, love your Ferrari analogy - I use it all the time. Though your messaging regarding the device is troubling. I still can't find a source to buy the device in Canada (carriers, stores, etc - last checked on Friday) so I've still got time to see how all of this shakes out and if it ends up being a cakewalk to root or something. Fingers crossed.

Good luck. The phone is great if you know what you're getting into, even for the sake of the headphone jack, own support and the SD card, as a hardware it is a monster. Just the software, there is so much more
I am excited for the OnePlus 8 and the Xperia 1 II.

I agree that we are Masochists. Haha.
However, take that review with a grain of salt. It is a review on an Apple Fan Site.
holy balls, and comments won't show until approved by the author. At least it crashed his macbook.
This reviewer must be high. This is my 5th Android device and it is the best one so far. I am an AOKP or AOSP guy, but LG has little features that I find extremely useful.
LG is good with copying, like how they copied the Picture in Picture camera before Samsung released it, or how they copied the floating apps which Samsung dont even use.
Anyways, you cant win a review by everyone, there will always be biased people out there ^^
Btw, does the buttons on the side go white even if you have it set to black in full screen? Or is he just that hateful?
EDIT: Nope, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHqzTxPnPD0 check around 1:10 when he plays Dead Trigger, stays black.
The guy is a hack. I'm not even convinced he used the device for more than five minutes.
He claims that it has "even more useless features than Touchwiz", which isn't even close to being true. And he's apparently too stupid to figure out how to use KnockOn, because I have no issues with it.
His entire rant (I refuse to call it a review) is centered around LG's interface. To be honest, I just don't think he's smart enough to use it because I have no problems with it and actually appreciate some of the features it adds.
One that I really appreciate is the ability to send a video as an MMS (without recording it as one). Record video => Share to messaging => Prompt asks you if you want to trim it because it's too large => Say "okay", then, rather than trim it, just click "done". I twill compress the video to 3gp quality and send. Yes, it's pixelated, but at least you can send it. Most android phones simply tell you that it's too big and refuse to let you send.
LG is the ONLY manufacturer besides Apple who lets you do this currently. It's a small thing, but it makes me happy and I wouldn't give it up.
Its almost hilarious the bias of the comments that are getting approved as well. Clearly he has a bone to pick.
Thanks guys like I said there's too much to like on this phone and some features like the volume and display on the notification bar suck but otherwise this phone is a beast and its the perfect size.
The gizmodo clown was probably in the middle of doing one of those ridiculous alcohol articles that they do every week!
I come from Nexus devices, and that dude is a straight retard. The phone is unusable with this interface? Stick to iPhones , it seems that's all your simple mind can handle.

That wake up alarm is one for the Disney crowd or serial killers.......
I could see his point of view in the review.
I looked at the phone and yes, the first thing I do on any phone is install Swiftkey.
I also spend hours and hours getting everything right on the phone and strip away all the stuff that is setup for morons.
I never use the factory email programs and always use Touchdown for work and K9 for home email.
I use WeatherBug Elite for weather widgets and a bunch of other stuff.
I think the phone could be usable, but you will need to spend some time.
If you are looking for a clean out of the box experience, I'd have to agree with Gizmodo, look somewhere else.
On the other hand, if you want a screaming piece of hardware, look no further.
Interesting that my default alarm has no singing whatsoever. Its just music. I changed it to something louder.

It literally takes 5 minutes to set the phone up and get rid of the features you don't want. I have none of the notification bar issues because I stripped them down. Install the Google keyboard and whatever widgets you want. If you are suggesting that the phone isn't usable out of the box, I'm going to question your choice in user names.

No time for praise. They're too busy conducting a demonic ritual to resurrect him from the grave.
And yeah .. that reviewer is an idiot. My kindergartener could write a more intelligent an unbiased review.
I surely wouldn't recommend not buying this phone to anyone. But.. Nothing he said is that far off. This device is not far from being a masterpiece, but the software does suck. Some of the things he said such as the navigation bar can be changed in the settings, so I'm not completely sure what he's talking about. I also thought the keyboard was junk and their version of Swype was even worse. He didn't even get into the throttling portion, or how the issues with the camera and some shots it floods out in lighter conditions.
I mean you may love the device, I did. But there are many nuances in the software, like the folders opening into little squares that the app titles take up 2 lines. I'm surprised he didn't mention that...
It's a good thing Loki works and we can put vanilla android on it soon, because it really will be an epic device at that point.

I don't have an issue. I modify every device I get. My first operation out of the box is unlock or root. Then I start the process. I was talking about those that do not want to setup a home screen, etc. Remember most people that had VCRs had them flashing 12:00 from the time they got them until the thing died.

Would a experienced dev(gaining root) please take our money?

Please delete. The average xda user replying to this topic with their own opinion was not the goal of this thread. Since it seems replies are based off w/e their brains decided to pick out of my OP instead of processing the entire post. Besides I have achieved my goal, thanks.
I'm totally guessing right now, but I think Shelnutt2 is working on something behind the scenes. He's an Optimus G Sprint user, at least, and there are whispers and murmurs about a root method outside of the circle (jcase, autoprime, et al). GUESSING!
I also believe there IS a Sprint root in existence, but it's not public. I personally have resigned myself to just waiting. Hopefully by the end of the month, maybe a bit longer, I'd be surprised if nobody had anything within 30 days. That seems like a long time, but what can you do?
/speculation
Root will come. There are devs working to find a way to get it done. As with any new device, just takes time to find the loop hole. I know (Somehwere) on here, one is working on getting device and hoping (key word here) to release something by Mid august. In all honesty, Only a few reasons I personally want to root right now (Greenify/Titanium backup) other than that.. Stock is working quite well. Hang in there folks.. It'll happen in time.
Thanks for replying without reading my post.
Let's see...looks to me like they read your post as I did.
Root will come when it comes. And they'll charge if they want to.
Bounties don't work very well without having the phone.
There's at least 2 AWESOME Devs that have our phone and are working on getting us Root and Unlock.
Patience is a virtue.
Edit: Sorry..I don't want the above to be taken wrong. So here's some threads about bounties, root, unlock

If you read through those threads, you'll see there's quite the discussion/debate over it all.
Also, We have a Dev team with and without our phone and they are all working on root/unlock. Here's the ones I know of in no particular order.
thecubed
autoprime
jcase - Sprint
Shelnutt2 - Sprint
fiddy619 - Sprint I think
They've all done root/unlocks in the past along with some other important items, like LG's EFS. You lose your EFS, be prepared for tons of work if you're lucky. And usually a Brick by the real definition of paperweight.

If root is a must, you never want to buy the phone right at release. You will hardly ever have it rooted right out of the box. Just be happy that this isn't iOS and you have to wait months to see something.

The reason for root on this (and any device) really is that Google in its infinite wisdom locked apps out of the battery info service - https://plus.google.com/+SvenKnispel/posts/ReLvz6KJwG5. So now just to see what's draining the battery, you have to root the phone. The first two days of the G3, my battery was draining like crazy and I couldn't figure out why. It seems to have stabilized now. But even so every now or then it acts up. For me, this is the real big reason for getting the G3 rooted. Then of course, Xposed to get rid of the volume configuration in the notification drop down, TiB for freezing apps and Nandroid backups. I could live without the rest. It's just the checking of battery stats that's bugging me.
But between waiting on this phone and charging it more frequently, I'll do the latter No way I was waiting any longer than I absolutely had to for this beauty.

[Q] Cricket Moto e 2015 LTE boot loader unlocker request

Unfortunately I found out too late that the Moto E 2nd generation (2015 LTE) purchased directly from Cricket Wireless comes with a permanent locked boot loader. It came preinstalled with Lollipop. Is anyone willing to work on a way to unlock the boot loader, maybe for a few bucks? If someone has already come up with a method of unlocking this phone, could someone direct me? I have been searching for weeks and come up empty. The closest I came was with Sunshine, but it couldn't with Lollipop installed. I have tried the ADB method but obviously failed and Motorola gives the device not compatible message when trying to unlock from their site (obviously) and now at a loss. If anyone is willing to help, I'd appreciate it.
I'm dealing with the same exact issue. It's been driving me crazy as well.

You're definitely not alone. I've seen some interesting and possibly relevant posts in the Moto E section. Including a batch file that tries a bunch of codes. Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. But I'm still plugging away at it. I'm not a developer though, just a geek that enjoys trying to break things.

Thanks TheWeirdedOne, I am giving it a shot right now, it appears that it is going to be a long brute force process, still faster than if I tried to guess.

Yea, I needed my phone, I was only able to try for a few hours, no luck yet. From what I can tell, it appears the code is in hex, wouldn't it be easier to broot force by incrementing the value by one. Only thing is we'd need to know for sure is how many characters long it should be. I'd think this would be faster than randomizing, just my opinion. Also with that tool, what prevents it from trying some of the same codes? I really hope someone with real knowledge would respond and help out, but I am not about to demand it or annoy anyone.
I hear ya. I believe it's a 20 digit code. The guy that made it just basically randomized the numbers in the list. I highly doubt it would actually work. So we sit and wait patiently. Someone will eventually crack it, even At&t might, at some point allow for the bootloader to be unlocked. Until then, we just sit and wait lol
If it is a 20 digit code, I might try a simple hex counter with this, but that still will take awhile for it to run. I wish Cricket would reveal the code for my phone.
You and me both, I feel like I got ripped off. This isn't a phone that was purchased under a contract. That's what bugs me. The phone is completely ours since we paid for it. We should have fill rights to do whatever we want to it.

Yes, I so agree, just wish I were smart enough to crack it or rich enough to rip one of these apart and break it if needed. Regardless, I'm open for suggestions.
This phone's price is subsidized by Cricket. If you want a fully unlocked version you can buy it from Motorola directly:
http://www.motorola.com/us/smartphones/moto-e-2nd-gen/moto-e-2nd-gen.html
I would like it a lot if the bootloader was unlocked, but I don't feel cheated.

I never said I felt cheated at all, I only requested assistance with unlocking the bootloader
Let's please stay on topic.
Anyway, I was wondering if there was a way to use odin to crack the bootloader instead of adb mode or rsd lite, you know like using Linux to crack windows , I'm already familiar with Odin as far as rooting a Galaxy Tab 3 is concerned. Im sure I'm just grabbing at straws right now.
Any other ideas with this? The script is unrealistic at this rate.
Resurrecting an old thread here, but I take it no one has yet found a way to unlock a Cricket Moto E 2015? Disappointing that you have to wait 6 months in order to have Cricket do the unlocking for you. I would like to root my phone but apparently that isn't going to happen any time soon! I'll keep hoping though.

I'm looking for the same thing, I dumpster dive and I found this same awesome touchscreen display running Android. I haven't had any luck installing any apps, and the only thing I can do is go through the very limited setting menu. Any help would be awesome
Have you guys had any luck with this? The unit doesn't even recognize apk files, much less give me the option to install them.
It looks like some other people have found Amiibo kiosks and want to hack them. I've got one too. The information posted in the OP is what I know so far. It would be cool to be able to install some other apps or even get a custom version of Android running on these things. I'm sure other people are looking for information on them. Since the Nintendo Switch was released, these things are in the wild either through dumpster diving or knowing people at the retail stores. They could make for a very cool game room project if someone can provide a little information on the http://www.ducotech.com/ displays.
The only thing I was actually able to do was make it play movies. But for some reason it restarts after a few minutes, as if it has an auto restart set to a specific time.

Trial and error lol I don't remember the exact thing I did, but I know I made it happen my using the menu and navigation buttons located on the back of the panel. So it seems as if, for full functionality, we need the security dongle. I wonder if this can be bypassed in any way.

Good luck finding one, you would need to find someone who works for the company that provides the displays. And I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap either. It's like selling someone's codes for their bank account. If a security dongle got out and was duplicated, that could be harmful for their business.
I found some workarounds and posted them here here:

Then compare it as designed. Log in. Otherwise you're not doing the factory rom justice.
if by justice you mean features that require internet and my personal information and habits, those are features that i dont need or will ever use.
if you are talking general speed and battery usage and functioning with the apps i use the most, then logging into google on my phone is not needed.
the phone might have the power to calculate the need parameters to build a space ship and put a man on mars, but using that power to smooth out my crows feet, socialize online looking for 5000 likes and 2 millions followers , is not a improvement in tech use.

the phone might have the power to calculate the need parameters to build a space ship and put a man on mars, but using that power to smooth out my crows feet, socialize online looking for 5000 likes and 2 millions followers , is not a improvement in tech use.

If you know what you're doing you can log in with a Google account and not give out all the information you mentioned. There are a lot of privacy concerns these days all you need to do is some research. I'm sure you can figure something out that will accomplish your goals. Good luck.
Try freezing Google systems and Play services.
There are different apps that can do this, but you will need root.

I think he means not cutting off your nose to spite your face. Google credentials are needed for Play Store, like for keeping Carrier Services and whatnot updated. It's possible to push back against data harvesters while using stock Android, especially with root access. But it sounds like you'd rather take your concerns to the next level with something like CalyxOS and a Play Store alternative.
the only thing i dont want is to log into anything to use what i paid for.
the device is not crippled, its rooted and i have already installed 150 apps and disabled everything google i can disable.
i dont want the google experience, i want to experience the device i bought.,

So, you don't want the Google experience yet you bought a Google-branded phone? Just a bit of an oxymoron there. Seriously, while I could ask why you bought a Google phone if you don't intend to use Google services, it would be a pointless waste of time and energy.
Install a custom ROM that doesn't use Google services and don't look back. Just don't complain when you can't take advantage of a Google-exclusive feature as a result.

I truly do not understand people like you.
> Buys flagship phone from company with newest OS tuned to run as best as the company can to represent itself and its product.
> Tries to not have an email address because tracking
You do realize that as a society we are all walking around with computers thousands of time faster than we had sitting on our desks 20 years ago. That have dozens of sensors, connected to wireless networks, that can cover nearly every inch of the surface of the planet. What you're worried about is what we (the collective nerds/geeks/privacy advocates) were screaming at the top of our lungs back in the 90s...before it was too late.
It's too late son, That ship sailed, sank, was resurfaced, and put into a museum so younger generations could see what it was like in the way back when before times.
Good luck with your quest to use factory google pixel phone and rom without a Gmail account. That's surly the only way they are tracking you.

Everyone read what you wrote don't be a martyr. The fact remains you didn't get an answer yet you continue to berate members here trying to guide you in a direction that is concurrent with reality. You seem to be delusional and contrary, simply looking for an argument and to make your voice heard over reasonable discussion. It's not working. We tried to help but you will have none of it. So perhaps it's time to find another place where your diatribe will matter. As I said before, good luck.

no having people post just to insult my choices is not something i ignore. that jack ass was the first person to insult me, and i dont roll over and accept insults.
i have zero problem with getting no answer, but a huge problem with jackasses that post only to insult me.
no one should ever feel they need to put up with **** like that

let me guess you have nothing better to do but try ****ting on people. maybe you should go to reddit and not be someplace people try to learn about their device and what you can customize.

It wasn't productive from the first post. It simply is an excuse for him to rant and rave about how Google is a data whore and all that. I can understand that, as I once was like him. Perhaps I am in the wrong here for being so blasé over Google's data collection, but I stopped worrying years ago about it. I figured the benefits outweighed the liabilities.
It's rather entitled to expect to have all the benefits of a smartphone while having none of the liabilities. I think if I were truly that worried about data collection to rant about it in a public forum I wouldn't be using a phone at all. After all, every phone made today, from the most expensive smartphone to the cheapest dumbphone, has sensors in it that can track you, even when the phone is off.
To the OP, TANSTAAFL.
