Chinese tablet only connects to 2G. 3G bands in MtK BandMode greyed out. How to fix? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I’ve gotten one of these cheap tablets from wish to make a video review about what you get.
Of course, a lot is faked and less than advertised. But that a new device in 2020 only connects to 2G, that is a new low to me. And even worse: it only accept standard SIMS. No nano sim, no micro sim!

However I saw you can change some internal settings in EngineeringMode and BandMode. Can anyone help me enable at least 3G for sim 1? Cuz it seems like it supports it but is somehow disabled.
See the picture attached.

MTK Engeneering Tool -> MTK settings > BandMode > Select SIM lists the bands your phone supports: By default, you’d see some ticked bands outlined in White color while others are in Grey. Now, those White colored are the bands your phone supports. Of course the SIM-card must support these. Using a SIM-card that doesn’t support any of those white outlined bands, it won’t work
How did you verify that the SIM-card supports the desired bandmode?

Hi, thanks for replying to me!
I'm pretty sure the SIM-card supports the desired bandmode. I've also had this very same SIM-card in my OnePlus One phone and it could connect to 2G, 3G and even LTE fine on there. So both the Carrier and the SIMCard support all networks. Also we still have 3G service using this Carrier in my country until 2022.
As for white and greyed-out bands: I know that the white bands work. The issue is that ALL 3G bands are greyed-out, making the device only connect to 2G (GPRS and EDGE) networks, which are completely unusable in 2020.
I know it is a cheap device and it isn't worth it to spend a lot of time on it, but is there any way to force one or more 3G bands to become white / active?

Never mind, I have gotten proof that this is in fact only a 2G device by running the “adb getprop” command. It showed the following radio version:
TOPWISE82_TB_2_KK_GPRS_HW(DEFAULT)
Since it contains GPRS I think that’s a 2G only radio...
Why they bother to release this in 2019/2020 is still boggling my mind.

[Q] 2G 3G Toggle on Galaxy S2

I was wondering where the toggle to only use 2G networks has been moved since i can't find it on the usual location of Settings-> Wireless and network -> Mobile Networks
In my last phone (and to my knowledge, on all android phones) there is an option there to only use 2G networks. But on my Galaxy S2 it's nowhere to be found.
Has this been moved to another location? Has it been disabled?
This is a screenshot of what i see:

Hold the power button and select data connection.
There is no option called "Data connection". There is an option called Data Network mode but that simply turns off mobile data connections. This is the screenshot:
From settings select "Only GSM". That corresponds to 2G.

Another way to do is use the code *#*#4636#*#* >> Phone Information >> choose the network mode you prefer.
You can set it in Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Network > Network Type > GSM Only
Or just download Extended Controls and use the widget
EDIT: At least it's there on mine
Hmm so it appears that my phone doesn't have that option. Maybe because it's carrier locked our something? It's a 3 phone.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
I think "3" is only 3G, nothing to switch
I meant my phone is from the carrier 3 in the UK. Maybe they put their customized ROM or something on the device and I am missing the option to switch to GSM only.
The *#*#4636#*#* option works but is not a viable solution. It takes too long to go to the option. Plus I will surely forget the number. Any other suggestions?
Get unbranded firmware?
Well I don't want to change my entire firmware just for that. If the need arises (could be very soon) I will but for now I was hoping for another solution
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
All Three network phones tend to have this function removed as by default they are a 3G network. Anytime you roam onto 2G it is using another network (I believe it's Orange) and costs Three money.
The 3 network in the UK only operates on 3G, so there is not GSM/GPRS/Edge option available on their network.
Same problem, semi-solution
I also have a samsung mini bought from 3 uk which I unlocked to use another sim and a sim in Africa (where I have to get a full day's battery).
I put the *#*# etc. number as a contact. I can't call directly from the contact, but typing *#*# is enough to bring the number up so I can copy.
I understand why three did it, but it is annoying.
I hope that helps, but if you found a better way, please share!
Use this

LTE Bands

Hello all,
I recently purchased my 5x and i have some questions about the LTE bands.
I do speedtests from time to time and sometimes i get 5 mbits, sometimes 10 and sometimes 40+
All of these results in the matter of a few minutes in the same house.
Until recently I did not know why this was, but now I understand it's because of the bands my phone switches between (3,7,40,41)
I wanted to know if there is a way to force or tell the phone to prefer one band to another, because even -115 dbm on band 40 is 5-7 times faster than band 3. If not, then Is there at least a way to check what band you're on, ive tried apps like LTE Discovery and they don't manage to tell me what band or frequency im on, and most of the USSD codes that should tell me this info don't work.
I would really appreciate it if someone with knowledge on this matter can help me out here

https://jioappstore.jio.ril.com/cms/ install netvelocity apk then run speed test. Under settings, enable advanced mode.
It'll display the band you are currently on.

As far as I know, you can't force a phone to use a specific band (it depends on the area you're in)
After installation the app crashes on startup

Hi there,
Unfortunately this app is not working on my device, maybe it's network dependent (Jio)?
would love to have a working app like this as I'm very curious about which lte band
my phone is on. tried couple dozen apps to no avail so far. and it seems huawei has
disabled radio info and some other parts of it's service menu.
anyone knows any other way?

How To Guide Set Preferred Network Mode through Hidden Menu

Since the common hidden menu code does not work on our device ( *#*#4636#*#* ), there is another way we must use.
1. Download this app from the Play Store: Force LTE Only (4G/5G)
2. Launch app and choose "METHOD3: (Android 11)"
3. Under Set Preferred Network Type dropdown, select the network type you want.
-- to get 4G/LTE and below, set to "LTE/TDSCDMA/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
-- to get 5G, set to "NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/CDMA/EvDo/GSM/WCDMA"
This was the only way to enable 5G for me since I am in Canada.
Only issue with this is that it may not stick once you reboot. You would have to follow these steps again.
Thanks man. This helped me with my Global variant. It got 5g to kick on when I couldn't see it in the menus.

It didn't work on mine. When I punch in the final *, it just goes to my contact list.
Although the app ForceLTE mentioned earlier by TikiThePug did work perfectly.
I finally get 5G all day long on a T-Mo SIM.
It's such a fast, beautiful phone and now it has all its functionality.

Hey I just started using Verizon coming from Fi. I have an unlocked.pixel 6 from the Google store what should my settings be? I know I need NR but what else or what would work best. I'm on new York it that matters at all.
And I can get to the menu via *#*#4636#*#* I just need to know what would work best for me .
I keep trying to set to NR/LTE/TDSCDMA/GSM/WCDMA ( Only way to get full speed on 5G
for some reason my setting keep resetting to NL/LTE/GSM/WCDMA (Very slow as if running 3G but says 5G)
How do I get my setting to stick Oh I'm on T-Mobile Network

It's always going to set to what your network tells
This menu isn't actually real control

Question How to activate VOLTE?

Hi,
Some users have the VOLTE option in sim card settings. It should be under or above "data roaming" option.
However, the VOLTE option is missing for me. When I make calls, it drops to 3g service. I am using t-mobile in USA so VOLTE should be working and supported. My concern is that t-mobile plans to block devices without VOLTE in April 2022, so if i cannot figure it out, i would have to sell the device
Any ideas how to activate it?
I suggest 3 things. Had this issue (but not in US) and these helped VOLTE show up again. Try them in this order and if VOLTE shows up, great, no need to do the rest.
First thing:
Go to "Developer options" and set "5G Network Mode" to "NSA + SA Mode".
May help depending on ISP setup. No clue what TMOB is up to. This allows maximum compatibility, but MAY drain battery faster -- I don't know the full impact of this setting. Note that it often reverts to "default" when rebooting.
Second thing:
Settings > SIM card & mobile data > (pick active SIM card) > toggle 5G off then on again
(On this page I previously had VOLTE option, but it mysteriously disappeared)
Third thing:
1) remove SIM card(s)
2) reboot phone
3) reinsert SIM card(s)
4) reboot phone
Depending on country, sometimes carriers/towers aren't super reliable.
Good luck!
Hey thanks for the suggestions.
First thing: When I go to developer options, that 5g option is greyed out for me. I cannot select it.
Second thing: I only have 4/3g/2G toggle. I did download an app called "force LTE" which activates 5G.
Third Thing; Didn't work.
Thanks for trying to help me. Are you in USA by any chance?
Hi,
I don't think this will work for you, since you don't have this option
How to navigate the VoLTE feature in your realme devices? - realme (India)

Maybe try to update to the latest rom or reinstall it.
And if still not working you have to contact realme technical support.
Don't know whether it's because the change of 5G Network Mode. The LTE icon doesn't show up, but I do notice the voices in phone calls are louder and clearer.

Propably HD Voice
Well, not in the US but I boot the phone, updated it to last one, reboot. So I didn't check that option since the beginning but I can see it under the SIMcard setting.
I didn't go in dev or else.
My second sim doesn't have that option though.
Hope you fixed it with an update.

Damn, sorry pal. I really hoped that would work for you.
Can you try borrowing a family member/friend's SIM card for 5 mins from their phone and seeing if LTE is greyed out with their card too? If so you can assume it's the phone and not ISP that's being weird...
And nah, I haven't lived in the US in years!

Question WiFi call using SIM card 2

I have two SIM cards in my S21 that allows me to call to Brazil using WiFi without have to start the number with country code. It works perfectly in such way that I never imagined. On Pixel 6 this is not available. What is required to the phone to work like that? I thought that any 5G should have the same features. P6 says that can do WiFi calls but not like S21!
I've been trying to figure out a way myself for months.
The setting is called Backup Calling (Samsung calls it Auto_Data_Switching).
Anyways, it doesn't seem to be as straight forward on the Pixel devices. The switch for backup calling has only showed up for me on the Physical SIM. Also, its only when I turn the switch for the sim off and then on again; it disappears super quickly and I don't understand why. I should add that when I turn the sim back on, I have to scroll super quickly to the bottom, select which line I want data on when the notification comes up, then quickly switch backup calling on before it's gone and replaced with Wi-Fi Calling. Sometimes it stays but I don't think it does anything as something system wise is not enabling it.
But it's really the eSIM I want this on because I have data on the physical SIM only. So to have Wi-Fi Calling over cellular data via SIM 1 would be a huge relief. But the switch for backup calling doesn't show up like it does on the physical SIM. Scrolling to the bottom trick doesn't work as the notification is different (something about calls and texts switching to the eSIM).
I think "Cross SIM Calling" and whatever related to it is what we need to look at.
Let me give you more details. My SIM card 2 is roaming and both are phisical. When I have to call to Brasil using at&t SIM 1 or SIM 2 roaming, I have to include +55 11 if I am calling to São Paulo but; because the SIM 2 is from São Paulo; when I am calling using WiFi to SP I don't use +55 11 and the VIVO network register my call as local inside their network. I can call numbers like *555 for voice mail; something impossible if you are in roaming. This huge benefit come from S21 + WiFi call; not available on P6, unfortunately. I have a brand new P6 in my bookshelf because I figured out S21 is far better than P6.
