ROM Help?! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Questions & Answers

I am brand new to XDA and the Android mod world. I am looking into the possibility of purchasing, rooting, unlocking the Bootloader and installing either a Custom ROM or AOSP on a SM-N950U T-Mobile US/Snapdragon Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The goal is privacy and the hope is that these elements can be included:
+Latest Android OS possible
+MicroG (no GAPPS)
+SPenCommand* App
+XPosed Framework (for more advanced SPenCommand features)
+F-Droid
+Retain or add back in as much T-Mobile functionality as possible.
*Unless a Samsung based ROM exists retaining S-Pen functionality with no GAPPS.
There will be other Apps/Utilities I am sure, however, this is the main bundle I am desiring. Since I am just starting out, I do have some questions:
+Is all of this possible on the “SM-N950U” Note 8 Model?
+If so, what ROM options are available?
+Is there a LineageOS with MicroG ROM for this phone?
+Does the Note 8’s 80% Battery situation exist using a ROM?
+I’ve read of TWRP and Magisk, do these have any relevance to this process?
+Do you know what “XPosed Framework” Module(s) I would need?
+If all of this needs to be pieced together to work, do you know what files I would need?
+Are there any other apps/files you would suggest?
+Any newbie Tutorials you would recommend?
+Would a Note 4, Note 9 or Note 10+ be better options?
What I have been reading so far is a lot to take in and I appreciate any help received.

Not going to happen. You'll need to do some research because the N950U has a locked bootloader and there is currently NO WAY to unlock the bootloader so you can't flash custom roms like that.. However if you buy the international version which is N950F you'll be able to do that..

Thanks MrMike!
Do you know if the N950F Model can be setup to retain all T-Mobile features like VoLTE, WiFi Calling, etc? Is there a better International Model Note (9 or 10?) that retains or can be configured to work mostly or fully with T-Mobile's Network? I appreciate your time.

The only way you will get those features on International version is if a developer were to include multi csc in the rom you flash

considering buying a honor 5x

i currently use metro pcs . i would like to buy a good phone.
ive been considering the samsung j7 but the specs on the honor 5x look better.
ive been reading up and it looks like it accepts the metro pcs sims.
according to various reviews, the main issue with the honor 5x is the android interface.
i would like to know which is the best way to get a stock android rom while keeping the phone functional. ??
would installing a stock android be alot better than the current interface the phone comes with ? { is it worth it }
also .. can i play games like hitman sniper on the honor 5x ??
Got Modacco rom no problems or lags i camera from almost stock android
i just bought the phone from new egg, now im looking for a tutorial that shows how to change to a custom rom.
also... instead of custom rom, will i be able to increase performance by using another launcher instead of emui ??
or
am i better off installing a custom rom for maximum performance ?

Nova Launcher is considerably better than the stock EMUI launcher, though I'm not sure that would increase performance... If a faster phone's what you're looking for, then flash a custom ROM, preferrably one that's debloated and as close to AOSP (stock) as possible, so you don't have Huawei's apps slowing down your device. I'm currently using EMUI and fine with it until fingerprint support comes to stock ROMs, but many people agree that customs are much better, faster and stable than EMUI.
Since you didn't specify wether it's your first time flashing a ROM or doing advanced stuff, I'll advise you to read up carefully and thoroughly about what you're getting into - step-by-step guides are nice, but knowing what you're actually doing will most definitely come in handy in the future!
ive flashed a couple of tablets and phones.
theres two so far im willing to try , cm12 and modaco
ive been doing some research and I have some questions....
1- with cm12 does every thing work fine ? ex. fingerprint hdr etc..
2- with modaco does everything work fine ? ex. fingerprint hdr etc..
i want all of the phones features without any compromise

only the stock base roms have FP support ...Modaco is a stock base rom
none of the CM based roms have FP support - bliss - crdroid - aokp - RR - cm12 and cm13 all fall in this category

Hey. I have the honor 5x too. I installed a rom called resurrection remix os.
It is a really solid ROM and increases your performance greatly. It is based on cm 13. Everything works and is stable (on my phone at least). The only thing that doesn't work is the FP scanner. I only tried this ROM so I don't know how the other ROMs for this device perform. So far this has been a really stable option for me. Try it if you want.

jimandroidnerd thncx for the input , i will try it first to see the best performance the honor 5x can give.
im mainly looking at "modaco" rom or the " rom-stock-b151-stock-rooted-deodexed-t3355130 " because they are either the stock or based on the stock rom.
also i want that fp scanner to work.
WAIT... i just noticed that modaco is only for the KIW-L21 ???
im getting a KIW-L24. what are my best options now with fp support??

Honestly, if you so desperately want FP support, stay on stock, or debloated which would be the most "custom" you'd get afaik. I'm also waiting for FP support so I know the feeling... There are some nice features in EMUI (that Themes customization app is a great thing honestly, I love it, for example) but I would like to run a custom ROM someday. We'll have to wait for the security base release I guess...
ima put in a stock.debloated.root rom and call it a wrap.
if im unsatisfied with the performance ill try resurrection remix os
and just not use the fingerprint.
im getting a KIW-L24 { as mentioned in post #8}
modaco is only for KIW-L21 { as far as i know }
i want a debloated rom that is stable , no glitches .
all reviews i read so far for this phone are positive,
except the emui interface and the preloaded bloatware .
i know im buying a budget phone , but i want it to work as smooth it possibly can

My bad, I missed the conjunction "or" in your sentence : "im mainly looking at "modaco" rom or the " rom-stock-b151-stock-rooted-deodexed-t3355130 ""...
But nobody than you can say what is a bloatware or not so even though Clsa's rom is good better create your own ROM removing what YOU consider as bloatwares.
Since Xposed framework v83 you can also install it by yourself without the need of a deodex firmware : you just have to consider the pros & cons of "deodex vs odex firmwares". Actual working version of Xposed framework for the Honor 5x is v85.
The other problem except EMUI is the lack of OTG feature as default and some other few stuffs...

Well, you actually CAN tell what is bloatware and what isn't, the only difference would be wether you find a particular app useful enough to not consider it a bother on the system...
There's basically no theoretical downside to deodexed ROMs or files, apart from boot time if you wipe dalvik. A question: is Xposed v85 a flashable .zip like normal Xposed? I read somewhere on here that you had to modify system files to do that, but I'f be very happy to know that the Honor 5X now has proper and easy Xposed installation available.
Arobase40 said:
Well I won't argue on what is bloatware or not as this is mainly personal to one another and I won't argue either against deodex vs odex ROM as as I said we now have the choice between apps customizations and ROM performance...
What only matter is your question : you can flash any Xposed Framework zip file with TWRP, but since v83 till v85 you can flash them whether you have deodex or odex firmware and the only change you have to do is to modify the build.prop file.
I actually have Xposed Framework v85 on my odex firmware and it works pretty well.

So by flashing v85, I still have to change the build.prop file? Is there any guide on doing this? Honestly I'd rather wait for v86 if it means not having to edit system files, but if it's unavoidable, then I guess it can't be helped...
just got the phone yesterday. after i deleted some apps and changed emui to "google now launcher"
it seems to run fine. ill give it a week before i start changing the rom
Arobase40 said:
I don't think a v86 would be of any help, just a new Xposed framework installer app...
Otherwise you simply need a root explorer (or kind of same app with root rights).
If you don't want to do the changes directly into your system, you can copy the build.prop file to your Sd Card (keep an unmodified copy somewhere just in case), and do the changes from there with a notepad or such. Then copy the modified build.prop back to the system folder keeping the same permissions and reboot... That's it !

I'm actually reluctant to modify system files if at all possible not to do so since I almost bricked my 5X doing just that (well, kind of, stupid mistake but still...). I'm missing the easy Xposed framework installer honestly. I really hope someone creates an installer for this, or a single flashable zip that also modifies build.prop...
I also just got the device yesterday. Was surprised it allowed me to delete the bloatware on it! I guess they were nice and did not install them on the system partition.
ALso interested in any performance tweaks. Like the phone and os in general but with "budget" processor it would be good to have it running as light on resources as possible.

For performance there are custom, stock or debloated ROMs, and in case you're looking for something in addition to EMUI in order to make it faster I recommend you the apps "L Speed", "Greenify" (guessing you already know this one), and "Kernel Adiutor" if you're into kernel tweaking. Putting your cores on Performance governor should speed the device like hell, at the cost of battery life, but you can tweak it to a smaller degree and find your balance.

Wrote a post on the thread that was ignored, lol. It says on the FAQ that there can be problems with Huawei/Xiaomi as they are chinese manufacturers and do things differently to, say, Motorola, so I'm guessing I won't get a reply no matter how loud I cry out.

But I was polite though... I think. It's probably got more to do with the fact that it's the general Xposed thread so your message gets buried behind bug reports and other questions, I guess. I was searching for other ways of contacting the dev but desisted upon finding that in the FAQ.

To buy or not to buy? - Questions: RN3pro official MIUI, rooting and custom ROMs

Hi all!
I live in Germany and would like to buy a RN3 pro from Aliexpress. I don't want to stick around with MIUI but would like to try out different CM-based ROMs. The community here seems very alive, but I am confused by certain things. So I hope you can help me :highfive:
1) Some months ago, I followed the news about the Mi4c. People were complaining that Xiaomi won't let them unlock their phones. Are there no such problems with the RN3 pro?
2) Concerning the official firmware: I read that the phones come either with a Chinese or international firmware (or sometimes even bloated by retailers), and each has a hundred of version numbers. Are all versions possible to unlock? Or do I need a particular version to be able to root/unlock bootloader/flash a custom ROM?
3) Are there any differences between the 2/16 gig and the 3/32 gig version of the RN3pro apart from RAM/storage?
4) Is Xposed working fine on CM-based ROMs?
Best regards
1. I spent around a month to get it officially unlocked, till then I unlocked unofficially in few mins. But if you unofficially unlock whenever you flash a rom you must be more conscious and read every step that's given by Developer or else you will end up bricking your device(don't worry there are solutions for very bricking scenario) . So if this is not a concern you can buy
2. Whatever the firmware phone may come with you can flash MIUI global firmware and unlock it from there.
3. Nope not that I know of.
4. Yes it's working.
Welcome to the community.

2)Developer rom is recommended for that, but I think that the never versions of stable build also support unlocking. Anyway, it's easy to install developer rom with locked bootloader
3)nope

1) If the phone is updated to the latest firmware (7.3.2 at the time of writting) then the bootloader unlocking process time will depend on how long it takes them to approve the permission for you (got my phone on Tuesday and unlocked it today).
2)Yes all are eligible, but you have to be on the latest one. Likely you will get with an outdated Chinese rom and will have to update via MIUI updater (or similar name of the official software). I also suggest looking for the phone from else where, like here in the EU (think ebay.ie had some cheap ones), since i had to pay an extra 50eur for taxes and expenses (am from Lithuania).
3) No idea, likely none. I got the 3gb version because it's more future proof and can upload 2 videos at the same time vie desktop version of facebook. Also the software itself uses about a gig of ram. Plus it's doesn't cost that much more and a gig of ram makes a difference.
4) No idea, wasn't a fan of xpossed before and am not planing to become one.

Some help understanding my Redmi 3

Hi guys,
Long time Android user here - I've recently sold my Blackberry Priv and have picked up a Redmi 3. I'm struggling to wrap my head around the ROM terminology for this device.
- I am based in the UK, I can see in my device settings that I am on a 'Global' ROM
- I can see that there is a 7.3 version of miui available for this device, but cant find a reliable download source (currently running 7.2.7.0.0 - LHPCNDB)
- Will Miui 8 be released for this device (Global?)
- If I choose to flash the device with a Chinese version, what will the differences in the software be?
- The BL unlocking processes confuses me - do I literally need to send a request to Xiaomi for this to be done or can I do it via a tool?
I think this is all for now - I'd appreciate some help clearing up the above questions.

There is no official global rom for this device at the moment. Your rom seems to be a cooked room by the seller.
Official rom comes with English and Chinese only (and a lot of Chinese useless apps)
My suggest is to flash official developer rom (you need the developer rom to unlock bootloader), unlock bootloader (yes you need to apply for it to Xiaomi). Once unlocked, install twrp and a stable unofficial eu rom (this one has no OTA but is clean off Chinese apps).
If you have the no-pro version, you can also try the CM12 from this forum. It seems to be a very good rom.

You should apply to unlock your bootloader first; just make a Mi Account and go through the process. You might have to wait a few days (I waited 6). Some good tutorials are available on the MIUI forums or here on XDA.
After you've unlocked the bootlader, the next step is to flash a custom recovery such as TWRP (also on XDA), then a custom ROM of your choice. I reccommend installing xiaomi.eu if you live in Europe for the good localizations. Otherwise you can install the Chinese Stable / Dev ROM at your choosing; it has English language but some of the Chinese apps might annoy you. MIUI8 has been released for the Chinese developer ROM, and therefore the xiaomi.eu custom ROM which uses it as base. A CM 12.1 build is also available on XDA if you're into that, although it has some bugs regarding the camera, fingerprint sensor, and GPS.

Looking for custom ROM for S9+

Good afternoon,
I'm completely new to Android, I came from iOS 3 weeks ago.
I know with iPhone's you can jailbreak, and I've only just discovered custom ROMs for Android.
I have a Samsung S9+ (UK, so it'll be exynos) - Model: SM-G965F and running: One UI Version 1.0 and Android Version 9. I also have the latest security patch: 1 April 2019.
I've heard of Custom ROM's Resurrection Remix and Pixel Experience.
Because I have the latest OS, is it possible to flash a custom ROM on my S9+? or is it too new?
If I can, do you have any custom ROMs you'd recommend I try out? I like the gestures of OxygenOS, and I prefer Google Apps over Samsung Apps.
I've been reading the forums, and watching videos. But any guides you have to install a ROM, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks for your help!
TGP (The Galaxy Project)
I have used TGP ROM's and kernels on several devices over the years and have never had any issues. The developer is always floating around should anyone need any help with anything and battery life is always amazing.
It's the first thing I did after coming from an S7E to the S9+ a no brainer...
1. Download Odin and Samsung USB drivers for your PC.
2. Unlock bootloader.
2a. Reboot into download mode.
3. Download latest TWRP, flash that sucker into your phone.
(Congratulations, you've just voided your warranty if you care about that)
Welcome to the smart side.
From there, you've got a smorgasbord of ROMs, Kernels, etc, to choose from to customise to your heart's content.
Enjoy!
(fwiw, I'm running (rooted) Light ROM, with white wolf kernel. And love it - and the nearly 36 hour gap between charges)

[Curtana] Does flashing a custom ROM compel disabling force encryption?

First of all, I'm really sorry if this thread would turn out to be a dumb enquiry. I am new to intrinsically customising my phone and only have been using this device (Redmi Note 9S EEA Curtana, MIUI Global V11.0.4.0. QJWEUXM 4/64 GB) for 10 days. I've successfully installed root and TWRP on my phone after having thoroughly researched relevant information. The only thing is all my efforts regarding the removal of force encryption have so far failed. I'm inclined to install a custom ROM, e. g. LineageOs or Evolution X.
1. Is it a necessity to have encryption permanently disabled so that the flashing process proves viable? Currently, I'm only aware of a method which has its effect limited to the the period the phone is in recovery. It involves formatting data and then installing Magisk and thus I need to go through the set-up again. At the end of the operation, encryption is enabled again. I have no clue why. I've tested loads of no verity opt files, none of them worked in a proper way either.
2.Will installing a custom ROM eliminate root acces (since it performs a reinstallation targeting the entire system, let alone the patched boot image)?
3. In case something goes wrong, what's the correct procedure to return to the factory ROM? Is re-locking the bootloader a prerequisite? (See this guide https://c.mi.com/uk/miuidownload/detail?guide=2, for example. Notice how each of the stable MIUI releases there are marked with ★ next to them, meaning they're locked. I didn't quite grasp the message they were trying to convey with that explanation though.)
I'm conscious that's a lot to ask in a single thread, however, unlike myself, the majority of users here are supposedly tech enthusiast and probably have encountered similar difficulties on several occasions.
I hope that I've provided enough information and the thread has been named reasonably.
(Priority: detailed answers within a month would be great.)
Cheers,
Hsjaai
Just format data: twrp->wipe->format data write yes->reboot twrp and flash rom.
If you got error(red lignes reboot twrp and format again).
or
delete all your lockscreen security before flashing but to install a new rom you must format the data before.
Thanks for your quick response, honestly I didn't expect anyone to be this early to react.
As I've already mentioned, in TWRP there's a workaround for temporarily disabling encryption using the first method, the latter one doesn't seem to function as intended - that may be the case on newer devices, according to an article I've come across.
One last request. Could you please (briefly) answer my two other questions as well? How do I reinstall MIUI if something breaks down? Is the flashing apparatus provided by Xiaomi reliable?
I'll keep you updated on my progress,
Hsjaai

With Magisk app
I'm still unsure about something. Will the custom ROM be installed without hassle if I unroot Magisk at the beginning (meanwhile leaving the custom recovery intact, of course)? No guide seems to deem having root installed as a prerequisite. If you answer that, I'm really embarking on the flashing process.

Installing a custom rom (aosp or Miui) requires a data format (erases all data and creates a new partitions if necessary) which will remove root anyway, but sometimes root + twrp creates problems (can't mout the partitions) it is therefore to avoid this that I recommend you to unroot before.
In all cases (Aosp or custom Miui) magisk is installed last.
Which ROM do you want to install?
I'd like to install LineageOS first and see how compatible it is.
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL] LineageOS 17.1 for Redmi Note 9S
THERE IS AN OFFICIAL BUILD NOW, USE THAT INSTEAD! Note: this ROM is derived from LeddaZ's build. I will continue to update it until my 9s is on its last legs. Do not expect any features to be added. LineageOS is a free, community built...

The latter is relatively new, although I doubt that site would be credible.

Umm... I've taken my word back, they're XDA developers, not just some random dudes in the internet. Still, you can't be too careful.

What device is Miatoll ?
Hello guys ! For some days or weeks, I see a new codename : Miatoll. I looked and search but I don't find what device is it. Can you helo me ? I wonder if I can flash my phone with a Miatoll Rom
forum.xda-developers.com
Miatoll ROMs are supposed to be compatible with Curtana if I haven't got something wrong... What's the deal with that?
I may consider flashing CherishOS instead, seems neat and the monthly updates appeal to me.

Indeed it is the same.
Others great roms

Don't flash magisk right away, check if the playstore is certified.
If not delele your google account and root with the Magisk app.
Of course, if you absolutely want to root your device for other reasons, ignore that.
***certified on redmi note 7
The installation of these should only differ (on a particular device) in the ROM that's being flashed az a zip, right?
For instance, see this guide. Could that be deemed to be applicable to any custom ROM?

Install the right TWRP
Be sure you have the right firmware.
If not flash it.
1)Twrp wipe format data write yes reboot twrp(if error reboot twrp and format again).
2)flash rom
3)reboot system
v11.0.4.0. QJWEUXM is a turkish rom(android 10)
V12.0.2.0.RJWMIXM is a global rom(android 11)Firmware base for AOSP
It is better to use Miflash and install TWrp after.(dont relock the bootloader).
Are you sure v11.0.4.0. QJWEUXM is the Turkish version? I thought it was EEA (the one tweaked for European countries). Installing the Global version seems alright, but why does the MIUI version has such a great effect on the outcome of the flashing?
Is that because both Cherish OS and the Global version are AOSP-based?
