Remap the Google Assistant Button? - Motorola One Fusion+ Questions & Answers

A separate dedicated button shouldnt be locked down for only Google Assistant.
Any way to remap it?

+1 Anyone?
I'd rather map this to Dialler which I'd use far more widely compared to any other app.

same here

Same here, did anyone fine any way ?

Not remappable yet. May be they'll change it via future updates.. highly unlikely imo.

So, here's the thing. I used an app called "Cometin" to try and remap the button. It didn't work (although, click and hold home button to summon assistant was successfully remapped) and when I got in toch with the developer, I was told,
"This appears to be difficult as the OS is calling google assistant directly."
If that's the case, I highly doubt it is possible to remap the button without root. I don't believe motorola will provide and update to allow remapping.

Disable Google Assistant Button
I hate this button. I wish manufacturers would stop shoving non customizable hardware bundled with unwanted software combo on to our devices. I guess this is the compromise that Motorola has made, in place of the usual plethora of software bloatware.
Is there a way to even disable this button? I read elsewhere that setting the 'default assistant app' to 'None', disables this button (instead of remapping it). Has anyone tried this?

Whoa, you mean you tried it on the one fusion+ and it worked? ? I guess I'll give it another go in that case
---------- Post added at 05:59 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:49 PM ----------
Well, I tried it again, and it still isn't working for me for the dedicated button. Can you confirm which version of the app & device software version you're using?

I got the same issue.
I'm guessing I'll end up sending it to a repair shop to remove the button or, Jesus, just glue it unpressed.
Cyanoacrylate should work, I'll let you know if I decide to go for it.

Whoa! No need for that! So I'm rooted and first thing I did was uninstall Google Assistant which makes it so pressing the button doesn't do anything. Also, I found the file that controls what the button does. It's "/system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl" the only problem is the stupid kernel is write protected so I can't actually modify the file...

Honestly I really hate this extra button and since its ther I'd rather remap it as a firing button for wither pubg or cod. Just hope these morons give the option to remap in a future update

So yeah, I have a working solution without having to root your device.
All you need to do is to install Tasker, either buy it or rip it, I don't really care.
After that, follow some easy steps:
0. Create a task containing two steps: switching to home screen (you'll need that to prevent endless cycle of entering your fav application again and again when you swipe/press back) and then launching your fav app.
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

}
1. Then create a profile for Google app on the Profiles tab (not the Assistant app!) and assign your newly created task to it.
2. Save everything and enjoy.
The only little annoyances here are that you'll have to sacrifice the entire Google app in favor of another app, and also that annoying google beep at the launch.
Happy hacking, dudes and dudettes.

[BRAINSTORM] Back Button Long Press Functionality

I was using my phone today and was making a lot of calls to the same place and was really annoyed on how there is no fast way to redial your last dialed number.
What im thinking would be really helpful for nexus one users is to have a long press on the back button be a shortcut to call the last number dialed.
Now, i dont have much programing skills for this kind of job so i was wondering if i can get a developer willing to look into this.
Thanks!
or maybe force close app?
I agree. the return button should have a function to force stop from an application. or I need to do it everytime in Manage Applications settings page..

this would be sweet too. maybe there could be an option ib this app or w/e to do one or another?
Actually there is a quick way to redial. If you look at the modified Phone.apk that Cyanogen uses in his ROMs, I believe its by cytown not too sure, he has an options in your settings where if you hit the call button it will retrieve the last dialed number

My thoughts exactly.
I dunno if either option would utilize the back button well. I mean there's an app on the market called force close and it puts a shortcut in your notification panel. Just pull down the panel and hit the force close button and ur done. Though this is not accessible with apps/games that take up the whole screen, it will work with majority of the apps. I agree that it should have a function but not sure what exactly. What about an undo function? Maybe if u unintentionally paste text or delete text, just press the button to undo. Keep sharing your ideas.

To redial, just hit the green phone button again without looking up a number.
POOF the numbers there..
Same on all phones, just hit talk again and it works.. (FROYO 2.2 confirmed)
Why not just make it remapped like we did on the G1 with the Camera button where its anything we want? It shouldn't be that different from how we did it to the G1 anyways
bright idea!
looking forward to it

Neither of these will work on the Nexus. It has neither a call button nor a camera button. Best we can do is the search button. And there are already apps on the Market that allow you to set the search button to anything you want. So all we need is an apply that, on launch, queries the call log and sends an intent to dial that number to your default dialer app.

yes, but you still have to go to launcher, press phone, then press the green on-screen button...
I think the OP's goal is to have a shorter way to access functions that are buried for lack of hardware buttons

No worries, program an app IMO.
Agreed 100%
I would LOVE to see the back button applied as a force close function...
Or am I still going to have to go back to the home screen and tap the "End All Tasks" widget?
OP: Great idea in a slightly skewed direction... I think more users would benefit from a force close function.
Would it actually be a good idea? I have to say the back button is the one I probably spam, and I wouldnt want to force close my ebuddy etc just because it didnt register the gap between my multiple back pressings.
Some programs already build "exiting" by back button in. (e.g. tvguide, astro).
Having a force close function so readily available will just introduce more headaches to applications that use states heavily.

Show keyboard automatically when opening Google Now

Hello,
I wonder if it's possible to open keyboard automatically after I swipe up on home button to launch Google Now. Now I need to click on input field on the top of screen to show keyboard and start typing.
Android 4.4, Nexus 4.
was googling for the same request. if someone bring up any solution would be awesome!
Keyboard popping up automatically in Google now
I like Google now. But I like just plain Google search better. I want to swipe up on my phone and automatically have the keyboard pop up and search the web or search my phone for a contact. With Google now on, it requires the second step of clicking on the search bar to open the keyboard. Because of that, I have always kept Google now off, because it would then allow the keyboard to open automatically. The ability to search this quickly with the swipe up feature was my single favorite feature of my moto phone.
But now, with the recent update to the Google search app on android, the keyboard no longer pops up automatically, even if I have now cards off. It just has a thing that says get now cards. This makes me angry. I want the Google search app to primarily be a search app, and open the keyboard when I swipe up. And I can close the keyboard if I want to use Google now.
I really want there to be am option to have it either way.

Did you ever figure out a solution to this? Because a few weeks ago, mine stopped pulling the keyboard up automatically, too. It's so annoying, and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get it to go back to doing it.

you can go to setting, application manager, swipe right to ALL, find "Google/google apps", tap on it, and choose uninstall update. It basically reverts the google app to the oldest version.
I also hate the update disabling the keyboard popup even if I don't have google now card enabled
I'm worried if later I update my phone to marshmallow, I have to tolerate having an extra tap on the google search text bar to activate the keyboard. I like the way it is now, just swipe up from the home button and have the keyboard ready.
Like you guys, I am super annoyed with the latest Google app updates which no longer pop up the keyboard automatically when looking to quickly enter in a search query. Kinda defeats the whole point of a search app, but anyway, I've refrained from updating for this very reason. I'm surprised more folks haven't complained about this and that an xposed module hasn't been created to reinstate this feature.
Has anyone found a solution to this annoying problem?
Before Marshmallow you can takeover the Home Button using "JB EXENOW" and link to the activity (e.g. via "Quckshortcutmaker"): googleapp.(...) queryentry.
This starts the google app with keyboard.
Sadly it doesn't work in marshmallow. I can set the shortcut, which is still working, but JBEXE isnt taking over the home button anymore.
I'm experimenting with "[GB][MM] Physical Button Music Control 4.0 beta6"-Xposed-Module, but until now i can't hook properly on the home button.

tasker solution
i made a profile for tasker that clicks on the search bar whenever the app opens up first.
the only downside is that you will need to pay for the "AutoInput" plugin (and Tasker) for it to work.
its well worth the few quid for AutoInput though. you can use it to toggle stuff like flight mode or NFC without needing to root your phone, switch between the current app and last app. . . or my favourite which is saving a song to a playlist in spotify, which can take ages since i have so many folders and sub-folders to click through each time
i cant post links yet so just do a google search for "autoapps projects" and look for "Google Search - show keyboard" by pymai

There is an easy way to do that using GravityBox and Nova Launcher. You have to go GravityBox -> Navigation bar tweaks (this section needs to be turned on with the master switch) -> Navigation ring targets -> Change Ring target 1 from Applications to Shortcuts -> Choose Nova Action -> Search (the one with the big magnifier icon). Voilà! Now when you swipe up from your home button it will go directly to search bar and open keyboard.
GravityBox 5.4.5 [LP], Android 5.1.1 Rooted+Xposed, Nexus 5
If you're not rooted just install swipeup utility to replace Google and choose quick search..

yes because camera and gallery is the same app.
we should blacklist the certain activities, not the whole app.

Great app
Hi,
This is a great app and is working well but I just wanted to report a slight bug... if in kids mode the homebutton on my Samsung Galaxy S5 is held down then Google Now launches. This isn't so much of an issue but if a search is performed then Chrome opens and the kids are able to get on the Internet and mess with bookmarks etc.
Thanks for your great work on this

What is exactly happening ?
Is it reverting to home screen, recent screen or google search ?
Can you explain a bit more ?
Thanks for making this module! I was thinking that this is just what is needed using Xposed after looking into the parental controls that are in Amazon tablets, and things like the OLPC tablet, and Nabi.
I hope that this can grow into a full featured parental control app with usage time limits, and tracking of what apps are used most. Then no matter what android device I use can be safe from the kids messing up the device, or going where they shouldn't.
If the app usage tracking is added, it could serve much the same purpose as the OLPC tablet does in helping to see what your children are interested in. You could make available many different subject learning apps and see which your kids use most, and help encourage them to explore more deeply into that subject. All without having to report this information to some huge multinational company like google, amazon, or MS.
Thanks for the module! Has potential, however it isn't quite working on my Nexus 4 N5X ROM 4.4.4. I am able to add shortcuts and enable kids mode, but when I press the home key it takes me to my stock home screen not the kids mode home screen!

Working fine, great job!
Just some improvements is needed
1. The D-pad, too big and the app screen behind it react together when touch, so in a map app, when move the dpad the map turn together.
So should be able to avoid the mocked app to "react" while touching the road, and make the dpad able to collapse or minimize.
2. When choosing the map location in the module, if I search, for example, Central Park, it is not shown to me the map and I can't select the exactly location I want of it.
But great app anyway, thanks
Great app. Best part is you can select which app to spoof the location.
Making you can fake the location without affecting other apps like Google map

Yes I still research how to make the touch event not propagate to the target app screen. Not all apps react like this, need more time to fix it.
2. Next release will customize the location picker, maybe include new feature for saving favorite places.

Actually it may work, but.. I take an easy way to just block it, because there was a problem on passing preferences config through different apps.
Great app and by far my favorite. The only down side I've experienced is that the map (stops, pokemon, etc...) in Pokemon becomes unresponsive after a while when this is running. The rest of the menus, nearby monsters button, etc all work still but you can't click to move/rotate the map or engage monsters. This is on a rooted LGG2. Other than when that happens, the app is perfect. No "gps lost" errors or anything. Good job!
This is the best fake gps app that I used. Would you consider adding auto-walk function? So that we don't have to hold our fingers on the screen for a couple minutes to hatch eggs.

Thank you for using this application.
Auto walk is a good idea, let me think first and look for its possibility. :good:
From all fake GPS programs I tried, this seems to be the one that fakes better. I use the app gpsWifiPosDifference to see the differences between the apps. This is the only which works well with GPS precision and altitude. Most of the other GPS fixes the altitude to zero or to some weird values like 7!

Trying experimental version 1.5 the crashes stopped.
First, thank you for the great app! I really like it and had no issues since I started using it more than 6months ago...
Do you still develop or did you stop working on it?
Bug:
- Deleting Elements from the Favorite List sometimes messes up other elements in the list.
Feature Ideas:
- Maybe start the Map Selector already zoomed to the current location
- Maybe have "Save as Favorite" not checked by default
- Autowalk
- Joystick "Speed" Setting (limit max speed to customizable value: like 5km/h for walking or 22km/h for bicycle or 50km/h for car)
- Joystick Minimize (remember location of "dot" if moved e.g. to the corner)
-- EDIT: Actually, it works as long as I stay in the app. but e.g. Minimizing/ScreenOffOn reset it to show the controller in the center.
But as said these are ideas which might be nice to use but the app already works great as it is.
Thanks again, Regards

Question Repurposeing Google Assistant button.

Any suggestion on how to remap Google Assistant button on Sony Xperia 1 iii to take screenshots instead of having to press volume down button at same time as power button?
Assistant button remapper module (magisk/xposed)
I've created a very simple Magisk module to allow Xposed Edge to properly remap the Google Assistant button. You'll need Magisk and a Magisk-based Xposed implementation (I use LSPosed) for this to work. Xposed Edge is the only remapping tool...
forum.xda-developers.com
alternatively, just press the button and tell google assistant to take a screenshot.
I was able to remap my assistant button. I do not know if my previous uninstall of Google as well as the Google assistant App(s) had any bearing on the results...but I did use ADB to uninstall those things and it did disable the button, because when the phone was unlocked pressing the button did nothing at all. However, I did notice that when the phone was locked if I pressed the assistant button it would call up the login screen, so evidently it was still doing something!
At any rate this is how I did it:

I want to thank each and every person who provided all this information as well as for the technical know-how to make this work!!!
I just wanted to add that when I press the assistant button the app I chose (for now the settings app) opens immediately with no hesitation at all.
Folks: Sorry to disappoint but regrettably I'm not digitally savvy enough, yet, to understand your responses; but does this entail having to root my phone with the possibility of it being bricked at some point? In these Covid-19 times can't afford that, essentially, having to buy a new one.

The post/link by jaseman is also discussed in the thread link I posted. xda has been deleting duplicate threads, and your thread maybe a duplicate of the thread I posted which is why I redirected you there.
Anyway, as recommended, you should use the app above, Shouko / XPERI+. I quote from their github readme:
Assistant Button Override
This feature is available on Xperia 5 II, Xperia 10 III, Xperia 1 III.
Launches an app or a shortcut when the Assistant button is pressed. You can also disable the button completely.
This feature needs READ_LOGS and WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS permission granted manually with ADB or root. A guide to grant this permission is available in the app.

As mentioned, root is optional. You can use ADB if you don't want to root your phone. I didn't root mine, I used ADB and it works nicely when I tried it out. There are also instructions posted in the app on how to grant those ADB permissions, but if you need more help, feel free to ask.
Btw, If you use side sense as I do, you can also set a gesture to take a screenshot. I went back to this as I wanted to use the button for Google Assistant after all.
I have disabled my google button, i never use it.

I can't stand to have a button there and not use it for something. Since I use a Spigen rugged armor case I suppose I could just cut off the rubber part that covers the button and then it would basically not be there, but I prefer to assign it to a hidden, encrypted, password app that I have been using for years. I press the button and open the database with my fingerprint. Works great!
Hello,
Anyone knows why it is show me an error when I try to do the Read permissions?
"Error: no permission specified"
