VoLTE on AT&T - Sony Xperia 10 Plus Questions & Answers

Has anyone figured out how to enable VoLTE on AT&T? I got the message a few weeks ago about AT&T not being compatible with my device after a certain date, and I can find online that the phone has VoLTE, but I cannot find a setting to manually enable it.

AT&T is using the 2G/3G shutdown and VoLTE switch not only to redeploy frequencies but to institute a whitelist. If your handset isn't on their list of approved devices, it will be banned from their network even if it is VoLTE capable.
Presumably this is a marketing effort to reduce BYOD usage on their network, increase handset sales, and probably increase monetization and tracking of their customers by forcing them onto handsets that have system apps that facilitate this.
If you are getting that message, you are going to have to either switch to one of their approved handsets or switch to T-Mobile or Verizon.

They don't seem to be selling the Moto E. They do have a BYOD option, but since they ride on Sprint, you need to get a Sprint-based device. However, Sprint changed their prepaid phone policy (Moto E LTE was only made available via prepaid) back in March, that locks prepaid phones to their respective provider (Sprint, Boost, Virgin, etc) until 12 months of service on said provider. After that year, you can unlock it for use on other Sprint-based providers, like Tello. There's a somewhat-related discussion (flashing APN settings for various Sprint-based providers) in the CDMA development forum, but it does not bypass the 12 month requirement.

Yea, I did make sure to get a phone that had been active for a over a year.
Just activated on tello. No problem. Only needed to do ##SCRTN#
What's interesting is that my MMSC URL is http://mm.myboostmobile.com. MMS does work, so I guess that's valid for tello. I am still waiting to see the MMS activity to show up on tello activity page (but it's normally slow to update).

sm-g965f S9+ VoLTE

I bought the s9+ online. It does support my carriers signal LTE. I`m with KDDI AU
what happens though is i cannot get signal. Though the sim is read and it knows the number attached. I cannot attach to the network.
There are 2 choices in manual search. i choose 1 it says I am not allowed on. the other just says registering for a long while then it fails.
I have found japanese forums blogs etc That AU are a bunch of turd munching ass bandits. I think they purposely try to stop anyone from BYOD by making it difficult.
In the case of VOLTE I have a s7 edge right now. It is on a VOLTE plan and has a sim that AU calls "AU ic lte card 06"
It seems that this sim only works in an VOLTE enabled device. (perhaps running firmware that add software to authenticate to network too) I.e. that sim will not attach in a non volte handset and some non au sold phones may not work either VOLTE support or not.
There is another sim coded 04 i think that works on lte/cdma hybrid. Since the galaxy s9+ does not work the cdma even if i changed the sim ( they charge about $30 and changed the plan from a volte plan to an lte plan another $30 charge) i could only use data anyway.
So I had thought this device would work since it was meant to be volte. but my device does not let me enable it. (some error like not supported by your current software version)
Anyone got any idea how to enable the volte is.
I don`t want to root it or load another rom etc.
So if there is not other way I may just cut my losses and switch providers.
I want to because I hate AU but at he same time i dont want to because they make it incredibly hard to change providers.

LG V60 5G UW (Verizon Version) on T-Mobile 5G

Howdy, y'all!
I was looking at a good deal locally to get an LG V60 UW 5G, but I'm on T-mobile. I was wondering if I could get it working for T-mobile's 5G bands (71, 66, 2, etc); or if there would be some issues as it's a Verizon phone originally (that's unlocked). From what I can tell is that it should work as it does have the correct bands. Any help or further info would be greatly appreciated!

5G may not work. I think the Verizon version of 5G uses an mm wave radio that is different from T-Mobile.

Don't try this as I am currently stuck in this situation. I thought it would work so I bought a Verizon LG v60 and connected to T-Mobile network. Now I only have 4G and it drops to 3G to make phone calls. ? The only hope is for T-Mobile to go mm wave soon.
I have a Verizon LG-V60 UW on T-Mobile and it worked perfect on 5G in the Missouri area. I'm almost in Arkansas and I'm still getting 5-G. It used to do the shuffle where it would go from 5G down to 3G or HSPA when I would make a call which means I wasn't getting VOLTE because if I were, then it would not need to drop to 3G or anything less than 4G LTE to make phone calls. I could be wrong, but I think it's a slim chance, I suspect the deficiency is not with the hardware, i.e., the Verizon model has enough bands to support VOLTE even on T-Mobile's Sprint-T-Mobile combination of towers, (hence the ability to receive consistent 5G) but Verizon has found a way to defy the deal they signed onto when the FCC let them come in before the doors were open to bid on spectrum privately and Verizon promised to make phones that were SIM unlocked for...ever. They have been bucking that clause in the agreement ever since, but of lately they are REALLY pushing back at the FCC by locking SIMs, and the FCC has capitulated a few times IMHO by allowing Verizon to lock them under certain circumstances such as if a device is not paid off or not on their network long enough- which begs the question, what did they get from Verizon that's any different from the rest of the carriers? That is the industry standard, but I digress. Point is they want to tether their phones to their network and they have started to decide some more thoughtful ways as opposed to just defying the FCC outright by locking the SIMs, and one of them is to deny WIFI calling if you are not on their network with the V60 at least. You are directed every time the phone powers up to put in your address for 911 purposes since WIFI calling doesn't always transmit the address to the police like the E911 would on a cellular call. This is NOT a requirement, by the way, there is no law that says you can't make phone calls over wifi without appraising the police as to where to send the cops if you ever dial 911 over WiFi. But, there is no way around Verizon's interface on the LG-V60, and, as you can guess from my rant, you will never be able to successfully update your address with Verizon if you are on TMobile, or anybody else that I've seen because it will just bounce around for a few minutes of pointless waiting to come back and tell you that something went wrong and you can try again... But don't. There isn't any purpose and they know it. You won't be able to update Verizon's databases from another carrier unless maybe you still have an account with Verizon, and that's still debatable from another carrier. So no WiFi calling on other networks. Ever. Same thing goes for VoLTE. It never provisions if you are on T-Mobile. Can't, Verizon has locked the door. It did work when I first got the phone. Then, I reset the phone and since I did not have initial access to Verizon's network, it did not provision (unlock the VoLTE). Unfortunate for me, I bought my device from the internet swap site and I checked the company's IMEI checker which green-lighted the sale by giving me the false impression that the device had no blacklists for theft or financial non-payment. Then, when I tried to circumvent the new way to prevent their Verizon customers from escaping by putting in my girlfriend's Verizon SIM in long enough to provision all the barriers aforementioned, and it locked her SIM up simply because the guy sold me a phone and Verizon told me that they can say that the IMEI is good quite a while after a person sells an unpaid phone before changing their report that the phone is clear and free to it is black listed, meaning that it is almost pointless to rely on their IMEI check because anyone can sell the phone while they owe a thousand dollars on it still and then, after you give them $900, they simply quit paying and you have all the problems of a blacklisted phone even though you were told it was a-ok when you checked with them and ran the IMEI before buying the phone. It was hell trying to get my girlfriend's phone working again after they unceremoniously shut it down for punishment of putting her Verizon SIM into a Verizon phone that someone had stopped making the payments. It wasn't stolen mind you; do not put your SIM in anybody's phone if you have a Verizon SIM because they won't tell you that it offends them, they just **** your service off and now you have to contact them and if it's on s holiday weekend like it was for me, you are screwed for a couple days. I was, and I was lost- no gps and running out of gas in the middle of nowhere. Long explanation, but it could be critical if someone owns a Verizon phone or attempts to buy one and puts their SIM in it to see if it works- God can't help you if you do.
Jeesh, all that and I forgot to mention this: I now use the 5G on CDMA, but cannot make calls. I just switch the mobile network to CDMA LTE and instantly I have 5G service but only emergency calls because VoLTE is not working. Nor video calling. But when I want to make a cellular call or see my text messages I switch back to Global mode and it goes right to 3G or HSPA (most time it flips constantly between the two over and over and over) and I get my texts and am able to make non-emergency calls. It's a hassle, but what am I going to do? Verizon is the biggest bully on the block, not even the FCC can push them around, and LG bit the bullet as far as phones are concerned. SMH...
I purchased a Verizon V60 (LM-V600VM) on ebay in late December 2021 and was told by Verizon customer service this phone's IMEI will not work on Verizon's network (likely due to original account holder's non-payment fulfillment, but that private info I'm not allowed to know). I never planned to us this V60 on Verizon's network and was 99% sure it would work on both T-mobile and AT&Ts network even though it's blacklisted on Verizon's network. Well it does work on both T-mobile and AT&T networks (on Consumer Cellular plans) until just a few days ago. It now will no longer allow incoming or outgoing calls. It still does get 4GLTE data and receives/sends text messages (with photo's too). I turned on all settings I could think of but with no luck getting calls to work. I suspect calls are no longer working due to the 3G phase out requirements by the FCC to retire this frequently to make room for 5G. I also think this Verizon V60 phone does not have built-in VoLTE capability but instead uses Verizon's built-in HD voice (as a voice over network) technology to place calls when 3G is not available and used only on the Verizon network. Since this V60 is blacklisted and can never be used on Verizon's network and it looks like the 3G frequency has been retired (dropped off the face of the earth never to be resurrected again), I'm asking if anyone knows a way around my problem with not being able to place cellular calls now. I know about Google voice but that seems like a clunky patch alternative. Does anyone know if an AT&T or T-MOBILE V60 main board (motherboard) swap into a LM-V600VM Verizon phone would work in this situation???

Can you confirm if your Verizon LG-V60 UW is still able to make and receive calls while on T-mobiles network? My Verizon LG-V60 UW for some reason can not make calls now (on AT&T network). It use to without any problems about a couple of weeks ago. It now only gets 4GLTE data and receives/sends text, but calls can't go thru anymore

That's because the V60 doesn't support VoLTE anymore if you use a version of the phone not from your carrier, even then it might not work. If you use an LG v60 T-Mobile version on T-Mobile it might work, but I would count on it.

Is LG v60 uw has only 5g 260 and 261 mmwave?

I have an LG V60 from Verizon it worked awesome I got it when it first came out it always read 5G UW constantly never even saw 4G I lost that phone it got replaced and that phone worked perfectly fine as well now all of a sudden that phone got ran over and I'm on another replacement phone and it only reads 4G and it won't update my phone to Android 11 they told me something's wrong with my phone and I need to have the insurance company issue me another phone so the insurance company told me we can't send you another phone Verizon does not authorize replacement phones for Network signal or software issues. I talked to several texts from Verizon they had me reset the phone plug it into my laptop try to update the software that way none of it works it's stuck on Android 10 and they won't help me at all. And finally they telling me well your phone's going to search for the best signal it can get from the tires and that's all they can tell me so basically they're telling me it's getting the best signal it can which is only 4G I've had this LG V60 replacement phone for 6 months now and it hasn't read 5G once I'm so angry it sound real now I literally have to buy another one and make sure 5G UW works and make sure it can upgrade to 11 Android. Right now I don't know what to do other than at some point to buy another LG V60 it's the most unfair issue I've ever had with a smartphone device and Verizon is like the evil empire of carriers if you're not a business or corporate and y'all just a single person with an account take a care less in fact all they ever do is send me emails and texts to upgrade to a new phone so they can get more monthly payments out of me. I forgot to mention I bought the LG V60 when it first came out and I paid for it fully in cash. I swear because I'm not making phone payments did not quick to help at all

Question Is VoLTE Really Needed?

I have this phone, but only by way of ATT telling me my non-VoLTE 4G LTE phone would not work after ATT shuts down 3G.
I move over to T-mobile recently. All works ok. I then activate VoLTE on the Mi. All works ok.
But I had to call a T-mobile rep regarding my iPhone, in that conversation I asked if VoLTE was even needed, and he tells me no, that T-mobile will still do voice data w/o VoLTE enabled.
So, VoLTE is a feature of LTE and implemented on 4G/5G, and really has nothing to do with 3G being shut down.
There's so many sites stating you "need" VoLTE to keep making voice calls after 3G is gone. This is not true.

As I understand it you need 3G for voice.
You may be able to use internet service but without VoLTE, no phone service.
If the device is not white listed it likely will not be able to have phone service as your link states.
I have straight talk with AT&T sim, I was using my Black Shark 3 pro which has volte and all of a sudden Friday at midnight, no data or phone service. At that time my bs3pro has been having heating issues, so i moved everything over to my redmagic 6 which has volte. I noticed my sim was locked in apn, totally different apn info than my bs3pro, so i called support, since everytime I tried to make call it blocked calls and sent me to support. The CS person did something on their end, had me restart phone, then service was back to normal and been fine since.
If your service provider only provides 4G infrastructure like mine... then you need VoLTE otherwise no phone calls. They are new and never had any 3G and below infrastructure. I tried making calls .... it doesn't.
My service provider annoyingly doesn't provision volte for my volte capable handphone (this makes my eyes swivel) but does provide an app to support phone calls without volte.. but it chews up battery

But T-mobile (US) runs 4G and 5G, but # of towers with 5G not as plentiful as 4G. I connect 4G LTE most of the time, voice & data works just fine. T-mobile rep told me it will work w/ or w/o VoLTE enabled on phone. The APN used is the "fast" APN one.
A 5G connection does not negate any benefits from using VoLTE.
Was on phone again today with a T-mobile "tech team supervisor" for a service issue (they accidentally turned off one of my SIM cards). I then asked about VoLTE, he tells me it's no longer needed on T-mobile 4G or 5G LTE, but using VoLTE will still work. He seemed to suggest VoLTE not needed at all on 5G because the speed of the wireless can carry both voice and data fast enough. He also hinted their 4G can do the same.
If you have a fast pipe then you really don't need a side channel for the voice.
But duly noted, everything technical that I have read about on VoLTE, using that feature gives better voice call on any LTE that supports VoLTE. The supervisor also mentioned that "VoLTE" will basically go away at some point.
Pretty sure on 4G LTE you need either VoLTE capability or a 3G connection for voice calls.

4G VoLTE will likely be here for a long time as 5G is distance/obstacle limited, the former is very hard to overcome due to the wavelength's physical properties.

I never paid much attention to this and still have questions but it's back burnered for when I run across it. From what I'm reading the T-mobile reps sound like they don't understand it either.
Even if they don't understand it... the only thing that matters immediately is if it will work. Hopefully that intel is correct!
Really until AT&T implements the change I won't be 100% sure. However pretty sure I'm ok as the devices don't use the 3G band and in hidden user settings VoLTE is toggled on. The only indication other than the 4G that VoLTE is active.
Probably HD too, but no indicator or setting other than very good call quality.
To make matters even more confusing AT&T changed the format and models listed drastically 2 weeks ago from their December whitelist. So small wonder reps might be confused too. Makes you wonder if it was deliberately self serving, an oversight or ongoing system modifications?
So, I have not been paying close enough attention to cellular these days. The cell companies have amassed large sets of licensed bands, probably near 200+ bands between 2G/3G/4G LTE and 5G NR.
Interestingly enough, 5G is not LTE at all. I suspect operators call their crud "5G LTE" to signify they support 5G-NSA or 5G-NR (or both), and, the older 4G LTE.
Some airlines are worried about two cell C bands (n77 and n79) that back up onto aircraft radio altimeter that run 4200-4400Mhz.
VoLTE has a long history, but it seems 5G-NR does not even use VoLTE (because VoLTE is a LTE feature, and 5G is not LTE). Can a 4G/5G phone still use VoLTE? Sure, if the firmware is implemented to use it. Likely will use it if the device connects 4G LTE, but perhaps will not when connected to 5G-NR. It's not clear to me if a device will use both 4G LTE and 5G-NR at the same time, but I suspect not. I mean, you could technically connect a device on 5G-NR for data, and then use VoLTE on 4G LTE for facilitating voice calls.

My understanding on this is that voice was using some 3G or below service. My provider was purely 4G and above - so unless my phone was provisioned by the cell company - no voice calls. I tried & it didn't work. I changed to an older device that they did support via VoLTE and calls worked. I can download an App from the cell company that allows my pixel 2XL to work on their system.
I can only guess T-mobile has 3G and below network infrastructure still. My provider is brand new and never built any 3G stuff and have no intention of rolling out obsolete stuff. VoLTE is annoying in that the provider gets to pick and choose which cellphones they allow (to use a standard protocol)

Pixel 2's all have ability for VoLTE.
A cell operator should not be blocking any phone from using VoLTE.
When you call your provider what do they tell you when you tell them your Pixel 2 has VoLTE for 4GLTE but your Pixel won't make calls on their network?

My iphone XS was connecting to ATT with a "5G" icon from time to time, so why does T-mobile say 5G is a "no"? I moved the XS to T-mobile and the phone won't ever connect to 5G, and the APN settings appear to be blocked.

Update: I find many sites that say the Xr and Xs do not support 5G, so now I scratch my head, my Xs would sometimes show "5G" icon for cell wireless, when it was on ATT network. Apparently AT&T supports Xs and 5G, hence the Xs does have 5G capable radio.

I think they go at least partially by number of a given model in use. My guess is it's not a painless procedure for them to configure their system for a given model.
AT&T first listed their Note 10+ variant but not the unlocked variant, a month later it was added as well. It may be a work in progress... it seems sort of helter skelter, oh my gawd get it done, whatever it takes... kind of deal

Before buying Mi 11 Lite 5G I went into a T-mobile store (not an affiliate). I asked if the Mi 11 Lite 5G will work on T-mobile and the rep told me all phones work on T-mobile as long as they are not locked to another carrier, and, the T-mobile freq bands ("channels") are covered by the phone.
Unless LTE or 5G-NR/5G-NSA is improperly implemented on the device, then I don't see why all phones should not work. They should all work.
Think about hotspot. The carrier can control is the device can use that service, or at least can with some devices, but why bother, who cares how the data on the data plan gets chewed up. Go over the plan and get charged. Thus far I have not seen unlimited hotspot data, T-mobile only allows 40G on their Magenta Max plan.
Good thing is, Mi 11 Lite 5G phone (model M2101K9G) works a-ok on T-Mobile USA. I did have to manually set the APN to the "fast" one, and had to use dial code for VoLTE, 4GLTE and 5G works.
Straight talk now keeps shutting off my service every 3 days, last night again, so 3 times now. Call and back working. But seems like they only care about giving me some crappy free phone and seems like they outsource. The redmagic 6 is not on AT&T list, if any more issues I will switch to T Mobile, T Mobile recognized my phone by imei and said it is fully compatible. I Noticed on my Redmagic 6, sim 1 is only 14 digits but sim 2 is 15, so I moved sim card, might be issue, but doubt it.
@Rotwiler I see you posted about the IMEI digit thing in another post/forum. *#06# should reveal a 15 digit IMEI. If it shows only 14 then the phone is hiding one digit. Put sim card in sim slot that has the 15 digit IMEI.
What does *#*#4636#*#* get you? Do some gooling around for activating VoLTE on RedMagic 6
Phone lists for carriers are mostly for support reasons. If the phone has all the cell bands the operator uses, then it should be good to go. If the phone only has some of the cell bands used, then the phone may work ok in one area, but not good in another, all depends on how the operator runs the bands in different areas. The cell operator does not want the support headache for a phone that only has partial bands, "hey ATT, my phone not working in Timbuck-too", etc.
The RM6 appears to have most of the ATT 4GLTE bands (all the major ones), so it should work a-ok on ATT (US). 5G should also work. It appears the RM6 had a firmware update about 26d ago. Make sure the firmware is updated to latest.

I am using AT&T through Straight Talk. I did move sim card to slot 2 to see if issue was due to sim one showing only 14 digits. Phone is fully updated. Odd thing is I cannot change the APN since this new Volte, there is red check mark and everything is grayed out. I have always been able to modify APN until now. My sim card is really old, used to be full size and over the years cut it down for new phones, is probably 8+ years old, had it since Android phones came out, but has always worked great.

APN settings are grayed out when the phone is locked to carrier. Can you at least see what the APN settings are? If the phone is owned outright by you then tell the Straight Talk folks you want the phone unlocked.
As for old sim card, then just go get a new one from the store for a few $, and then move your number to the new sim card via online.
Phone is Redmagic 6 global version, never was locked.

Question Vivo fold x question for USA Verizon use text sms issues

Hey can anyone help my new vivo fold x chinese phone won't let me send or receive pics or use sms beyond simple text to one person. Can this be fixed or am I out of luck. The phone won't work on 5g like I thought it would in Arizona but does work on 4g.
Are you using the stock Vivo Messaging app that is preinstalled on the Origin Ocean OS operating system, or did you install a third party messaging app like Google Messages? If it is a third party app you need to go into Settings/Permissions scroll down to the app and enable "send MMS". Your carrier will set a limit on the size of MMS texts (usually between 300kb and 1mb) and if you are trying to send a picture larger than that you may have an issue. The stock messaging app will automatically downsize your images before sending them, but for some reason Google Messages (which is the stock app on most other phones) doesn't seem to know to downsize images on this firmware and consequently your MMS will just hang with "sending". I am using Next SMS to replace the stock app and it allows me to send MMS and even set the limit for resizing. I experimented with sending images of different sizes until I hit 1mb, after which they won't send, but with the 1mb limit set it downsizes the images and sends them without a problem. My 5g worked as soon as I toggled on the 'Enable 5g' switch on in Settings/Mobile Networks/Sim 1. My issue is that I don't have any settings to toggle VoLTE on, which I will need as they are shutting down the 3G networks. Without VoLTE even when the phone displays 4G, 4G+, or 5G, it drops to 3G or HSPA when it connects calls.

No luck sadly, toggling 5g on and off still stays on 4g. I tried other messaging apps and set the mms size lower and that still did not help on several apps. And like you I lose mobile data when making a call as it drops 4g to 3g or 2g or nothing. Sadly I regret buying this phone and can't return it, I will try and ask for a return. So on a side note if you know anyone who wants this phone I will sell it at a reduced rate to recoup some of my money. Lol let me know. Or I can throw it up on ebay I guess but it is not for me, too many issues and I am very disappointed and frustrated.

I've dealt with this with OnePlus devices, you just need to call and set your line to "CDMAless"
The only North American carrier that will permit a GSM device to work on the LTE networks without attempting to drop voice calls to 3G (by adding a "CDMAless" note to your account) is Verizon. Most carriers, like the four national Canadian carriers who serve my area, will tell you as they told me: "nope, we won't do that. If you don't want your voice calls to drop to 3G then you need to buy a new device from us". It would just take a few key strokes to add the IMEI of your device and a note that it is a CDMAless provisioned GSM phone to your account, but they won't because they make money selling their own phones. Some carriers will provision VoLTE on 'certified devices' not purchased from them, but here is the catch - they charge a large fee to phone manufacturers to have their devices listed as "certified" on the carrier's network (not that any actual testing is done), and companies like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo won't pay that fee to carriers in regions where they sell only a few phones. In contrast, they have paid the British and most European carriers the certification fee because they sell lots of phones over there. Most Hong Kong mobile phone stores do a thriving business in Britain going back to the days twenty years ago when Hong Kong was still a British colony, and TradingShenzhen, based in mainland China, is a German company that has made duty and tax free imports of Chinese phones into Europe very popular there. I guess if you live in Nova Scotia or Arizona Vivo products won't be 'certified' by local carriers. I have a Huawei Mate 20 X that actually is 'certified' by my carrier and works with VoLTE and WiFi calling, but only because Huawei used to sell a lot of phones here until the government banned Google from working with them and most North Americans have become so Google and Android dependent that they don't want Huawei's new alternative Harmony OS operating system. I did try it out on my Mate 20 X before realizing that without Google Services I couldn't call an Uber or have Gmail update my calendar with important events. I re-flashed Android 12 on the device and I'm still getting monthly patches and security updates. Sorry for the long winded explanation.

Thank you I learned something new... and that new thing is I will buy a Samsung Fold 4 in 4 to 5 months when it releases. I'm too old to care about rooting or doing crazy stuff to make a phone function as a basic phone anymore. I liked the Vivo Fold X on paper sounded awesome but once in North America, not so much, I will be selling it on ebay at a heavy discount to recoup some money and the money loss is just a lesson learned that I am ok with. But I won't be doing this again lesson learned. Thank you for your information though it was a learning experience.
