[GUIDE] ROG 3 Pass-through Power - ASUS ROG Phone 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Speaking of charging, there are a few other bits worth pointing out. Like the fact that the ROG Phone 3 supports passthrough power. This is great for prolonged gaming sessions since you are not constantly charging your battery up to 100% and pinning it there to its detriment. You are also not generating any excess heat in the power conversion process. The wall adapter is just delivering the amount of power the ROG Phone 3 currently needs for its internals, with the battery at rest and still ready to spring into action as a UPS, of sorts, if something happens to mains power. It's a distinctly PC approach to power management, which makes a lot of sense, especially on a gaming phone.
To do this go to Settings -> Advanced -> Mobile Manger -> Power Master -> Battery Care -> at the Bottom select want you want me i just selected the 90% which is my battery now is 91% so it works it didn't charge the battery, PowerCharger Pass-through directly to the phone. I downloaded "Ampere" apps to confirm see below Screenshot.

Hopefully they will put this on GameGenie without selection limit battery percentage so that it will can activate when playing Games and it will charge again once exit the game.

A recent update did add this feature. Once you got a game running for which Game Genie is enabled (reminder: YOU decide which apps to enable Game Genie for, and they need not be games), swipe from left edge to bring out its menu, scroll down the icons, and turn on Bypass charging. Outside of enabled games we're probably stuck with charge limits.
EDIT: Oops... 4 months late, but folks, the option is now there. If not, update.

[TIPS - UPDATED 14/06/11!] Improve your battery life!

Turn off 3G, turn on only when needed
Settings -> Location -> Untick ''Wireless Networks and GPS Satelites''
Settings ->Accounts -> Untick Background data (Unless you want to use market)
Settings -> Wirelless -> Advanced -> Wifi sleep policy -> Never
Use phone on 2G, unless using internet (then switch to 3G mode)
Data traffic always OFF (Use only when needed)
Backlight low or Auto Brightness (And allow light to decrease)
Turn off wireless, basically everything turned off with the power control widget, turn on when necessary
Install task manager and set auto-kill mode to crazy on switch off screen mode (Put apps that always run in ignore list e.g. Launcher, Messaging. Basically the necessities)
Install SetCPU (After rooting your phone) - Min CPU 122mhz, Max CPU ~700mhz - 'On demand' profile
SetCpu - Profiles -> Screen Off -> Min 122mhz, Max 122mhz, Performance mode
Upgrade to Froyo 2.2 - Enable JIT (Saves battery on 2.2+)
Switch to a Cyanogenmod Rom
Enable undervolting (Only for CyanogenMOD roms)
Use RenderFX widget (CyanogenMOD, best to use low red, best to use when you are heading out)
Cyanogenmod - Spare Parts -> End Button Behaviour -> Go to sleep
LAST, but NOT LEAST, if you notice no significant increase in battery life, then your battery is no calibrated right! So go to market, download 'Battery Calibration', and charge your phone to 100%. Next, if its abbout 4000v - 4200v, your phone is correctly calibrated!
If its not 4000 -4200, press the ''calibrate'' button, and let your phone die out, then fully charge it (while its still powered off). Wait till light is green, TURN ON.
After boot, battery will not be 100% yet, reboot once more, charge to 100% (while phone is on), and check your new calibrated battery! It should now be 4000 to 4200v
I know there might be programs and applications to increase your battery life, but I dont have any experience with these, so feel free to post your experiences! Some examples may include juicedefender, etc
Anyone wants to add to this list, feel free =)

No task managers. The phone manages its RAM well and the battery will last longer. For normal uses upto 1.5 days and for heavy users 1 day.

and here I heard installing juicedefender does more damage than good too.. what to believe? Everything is based on peoples hearsay and no evidence..
On my girl friends X10 mini I changed from ADW launcher to Helixlauncher and changed the brightness to auto. That made a HUGE difference.
Was on vacation and turned off 3G because I was not gonna use any expenisve data. That alone boosted my batterylife about 1 days worth.

people can do much to boost battery time, like turn off 3g, brightness control, turn off gps and so on, that all helps the battery
I have switched of almost everything and still get about 1 day of battery with about 2-3Hrs of music and a few calls and videos.
is it ok?
I get over 48 hours and I use the wifi a lot and do about 30mins of calls a day.
My tips:
* turn background data off and manually update ur emails when u want - this is the best tip I put it on my blog too
* manually enable network data when u need it
* use the top button to go on standby as soon as you are done using the phone
* keep gps, 3g and wifi off unless u want to use it
Sent from my U20i using XDA App
I have background data off.
No emailing whatsoever till now....
Almost 75% of the time in standby
Gps 3G wifi bluetooth are off.
Yet with stock launcer i get 24Hrs
Helix 30Hrs..
Why?
Its been two weeks(or 3) since i bought the phone...
Please reply.
BTW when did you buy the phone?
^^Ok.
I have come to know the problem.
Running any apps in background like Battery Indicator or task manager brings down the battery so much(the latter not much though)..
Because daily i used to get the above with battery indicator pro on.
But after uninstalling it i got about double that battery life..
So people better don't run them all the time.
task manager can be used sometimes about once every 2 hrs o so.
This increased my battery life so much on stock launcher
Just got the pro today. Will be ditching my X2 depending on the performance of this one after a week. So far, I love the mini pro for the fact that I can now hear my incoming messages and calls!
A couple of questions though:
1) Is there a way to wake up the screen when an SMS arrives?
2) Custom ringtone per contact?
3) Is there a way to disable screen lock when the phone goes to sleep by itself (not pressing the power button) ?
4) Is there a way to unlock the screen without the need to press the left button, I was hoping to go directly to the pattern unlock after i turn on the phone
Still getting used to the keyboard lay-out as I've been using X2 for almost 6 months.

I use Chomp SMS app and this allows the screen to wake-up, I think Handcent SMS does too. I never used the stock SMS app so not sure if there is a way to do it with that.

Not sure if this answers your question, I just press the Menu button twice to unlock the phone, never used the power button to wake it up funnily enough, only used the power button go in to sleep mode. When I press Menu button it wakes up to the pattern unlock.

Nice, i'll try to look for those apps. I did try the menu button and it worked. At least this relieves stress on the power button since I won't be using it to wake-up the phone anymore.
How's about not locking the phone when it goes to sleep? Unless I press the power button?
After a day with it, battery is now @ 30%+. Hope it improves or SE comes out with a high capacity.
Hi, where is the disable 3G button?
I can't seem to find it. I found wifi on and off.
and I unchecked location with gps.
thanks
Helix launcher is the best thing I installed to my mini pro. Batt life is now 3-4 days regular use and 5 days if i don't play games. Games are draining the batt quickly.
I'm totally getting rid of my X2.
3 to 4 days? Lol how can that be possible.. Did you use 3g?

I can prove it, there's a display in the phone where it says # of hours unplugged. If it's not working for you, doesn't mean it shouldn't for others as well. If you barely make 2 days, then that's what we should be LOLing about.
My setting is as follows:
- 2g only
- 1 to 2 hours of wifi and bluetooth per day
- 1 to 2 hours of games (love the games) per day
- tried GPS for 1 hour using mapdroyd
- a couple of calls and text messages per day
- tried watching a movie (AVI) for an hour using yxflash
- tried the media, played MP3s for an hour
- tried meebo for an hour
- I got my alarms ON always
- notifications ON always
- custom led lights for new SMS (using ringo pro) always
- max volume for the entire day
- medium volume at night
- data connection off
- background data off
- screen brightness to zero but the sensor is still working (weird), the screens still adjusts to the surrounding
This is after installing helix. Before helix, I got a max of 1 and a half days only.

Random Screen Select/Brightness/Charging

I purchased the only 4G model in Brisbane on Thursday. So glad I was talked out of the Galaxy Note!
It's sleek fast, light and all round awesome.
A few little issues...
- It will select a seemingly random spot on the screen and open a program or a link and I am perplexed at what just happened. Sometimes 2 in a row, usually different spots. Is this an issue with the device or just sensitivity to fingerprints/residue?
- Is it possible to modify or add options/settings to the notifications bar? I'd like a brightness slider. I can see no way of quickly changing it.
- I know there are at least 2 high current (2amp) USB charging standards (Samsung, iPhone) and I have dual USB chargers from 'GPS For Less' that work great for my SGS2 and SGT7. I am not convinced however, that they are charging my XZT at full rate.
- I use TouchPal Curve swipe keyboard but I don't seem to be able to make it smaller as I have been able to on my TAB. I have set 'Keyboard size'to smallest and 'Candidate' to small. The full size is great for my single finger typing but way too big for swiping. I also can't find how to turn off unwanted options in the above the keyboard, like MIC and twitter. What am I missing here?

This might make you uncomfortable but turn on the screen and attempt to flex the tablet. See if this triggers touch recognition. (Enable show touches in Developer Options to help show this.) I myself have personal experience with the tablet triggering recognition when that happens.
Alternatively, if you haven't updated the tablet to the latest software version, do so. The shipping firmware versions have a serious touch sensitivity problem and newer versions have fixed it.

I'm sure you know this, but pressing the wrench&screwdriver icon/top clock section of the notification shade will open some quick settings (a WiFi shortcut, brightness slider, etc.), but other than third party apps that offer notification settings toggles, you can't directly customize the notification menu (like on ASUS' customizations of Android).

This is still speculation, but it's said the XPERIA Tablet Z's MicroUSB port has a hard limitation to 500mAh and that you need the SGPDS5 charging cradle to deliver more than that. I do find mine charges in something around 4 hours with said cradle.
I can't help on the keyboard issue. I use the default PObox Japanese XPERIA keyboard.

I enabled 'Show Touches' a couple of days ago to see what it was doing. So, I have just twisted the tablet as suggested, and yes, did get a couple of touches.
Also updated to the latest on Saturday just gone. Now running build 10.1.1.A.1.307 Android 4.1.2. It still does it occasionally. Perhaps not as much. Do I need to call Sony about this?
I downloaded 'Notification Toggle' This does almost exactly what I wanted.Just missing the Brightness slider, but the multi toggle works great.
If the MicroUSB has a hard limitation of 500mAh, how would using a dock increase this? No external device can overcome a hardware limitation.
I should think its more than 500mAh. At that rate it would take well over 12 hours to charge the 6000mAh battery.
I have ordered a USB current/voltage meter so I will do some testing with various chargers and device states and report on this forum.

The dock does not use the USB port to charge the tablet's battery; instead, it uses the charging points located on the lower left side of the tablet. The charging points allow for a higher charging ampere value.
Oh Very cool.
I wonder if there will be other non-Sony devices/attachments that will utilise these. I wonder if I could retro something

I've been using my Galaxy S4 ATT charger with my Tablet Z and it works perfect, my tablet charges very fast, looks like it's using 2A, so maybe the hardware limitation doesn't exist. I've the SGP311.
I must be doing something different as it now seems to be charging at a reasonable rate. The first night, after some hours, it barely charged 20%.

VZW version observations

If I try to charge the phone using any one of the myriad of USB cables and wall plugs I have laying around, the G2 goes into "Slow Charging" mode. When I use the cord and plug that came with the phone it charges like it's evidently supposed to. The USB cable is bigger around than my other cable too.
Kinda disappointed that the transparent selection for the on-screen buttons is literally for the buttons and not the background of the buttons which would actually be helpful.
I like having a tabs version of the menu screen option. I got used to the way the S4 menu layout is and the tabs version on the G2 is similar to that. You can toggle back and forth.
Being able to select which toggles are available on the drop down status screen is cool and easy to use.
In terms of the charging.
Most phone chargers that aren't specifically for tablets, or newer phones, are 1A chargers.
The one that comes with the phone is a 1.8A charger.
That being said, I have also noticed that any previous CABLE I have tried, including ones that are for a Nexus 7 or 10 tablet, even when plugged into the OEM charger, say "slow charging mode"
The funny thing is, if I use the OEM cable and plug it into any charger I have, ranging from .5A, to .75A, and 1A, it doesn't say "slow charging mode" even though, technically, it is.

Samsung phones often trigger different modes by putting resisters of different sizes between the pins in the cables. Not sure if that is the case here, but it could be that the cables need to be specially modified for fast charging mode.

Yes, the transparency for the nav buttons is not really transparent. Can't wait till this gets rooted and unlocked as this phone is going to be awesome with AOSP.

Overall thumbs up or keep looking?
So it sounds like purchasing a second OEM wall charger should be a priority, one for home and one for work. I could just use the OEM at work and slow charge overnight with my legacy wall chargers.
How about mobile chargers? I just purchased a moto mobile for my GNex, don't feel like dropping more ca$h on a new one.
My local VZW store doesn't have any in stock so I may purchase online just to make sure I keep my unlimited data. Sucks that it won't get here until next week.

The slow charging was a downside that I realized today, as I tried it on the same charger as my Note 2 and it was in slow charging mode. This caused me to have some doubts about charging it in the car without buying a charger from them, hoping a generic USB cable will work.
Overall though I love the phone! I think it's great that the Verizon version has wireless charging.
Double tap to put it to sleep only works on the stock launcher for me. Apex and Nova both override the knock knock.
Knock, Knock to wake works on Nova and double tapping the notification bar will make the phone sleep on Nova as well.
I asked this earlier in the general from and got this reply:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2441027
fix for the "knock, knock" to sleep.
From Verizon's description page (look under Specs/Web [stupid place for it]):
Micro USB 3.0 high–speed charging
So "Slow Charging" would be just like when you were charging your Note or older device. Which is why it is called slow.
Couple things I have noticed so far....
1) the settings screen can change to tabs if you hit the on screen menu button at the bottom.
2) copying mkv files from win8 always crashes something, had to use airdroid
3) you can get rid of the qslide by editting the quick settings, showing the qslide button then tapping it, then remove it.
4) the gps icon seems to always show, no matter what i do.
5) long pressing the home button brings up the task manager

I try to stay away from USB transfer nowadays for devices without an SD card. Go download FTP Server from the Play Store, then FileZilla (or some other FTP client) for your PC and transfer that way. A LOT faster than using the USB Media connection. Both phone and pc must be on the same network.

waking up after sleep.

Hi all, apologies if this has been answered else where.
Currently running a Lenovo S20-30 Win 10 dual boot with the latest Beta release. Surprisingly really enjoying it. The only real issue I am having is it waking after it goes to sleep. Mouse and cursor frozen and wont fully wake unless a reboot.
Is anyone else having similar issues and have a possible solution?
Thanks and appreciate the help.

My lenovo T500 reboots when it goes to sleep under Remix. My current "fix" is running a "stay alive" app I purchased for $2 (the free ones had too many ads or not enough functionality) that will dim the screen but not let it sleep if it has wall power or a good charge. I am also surprised how much I am enjoying it; the T500 is a screaming machine with Remix. It was barely adequate for web and RDP under Windows. I am getting incredibly good performance in Netflix, TWC TV app, Chrome, Dolphin and Microsoft RDP under Remix.

so...
details?id=com.synetics.stay.alive
you have to figure out the rest.
I made sure it worked at least somewhat before contributing to get the additional features. I am really hopeful that a later beta or some other app will give me more control. My notebook has a screen off mode that is better than just dimming but isn't sleep. I wish I could get it to use that. The dimming that the Stay Alive app does was enough that the screen would not keep me up at night but there is enough of a glow to know it is on. But it makes Remix more usable now.
I had this issue too. I noticed if you tap the power button once, the screen comes back on but the mouse won't still work sometimes. If you just tap the power button a 2nd time after the screens on, it would start working again. But I did have trouble w/ wifi coming back on after sleep. I had to toggle it off/on. Let me know if the double tap of the power button fixes it for you too?
BTW, I just added another little app - LockScreen (a free one). That way I can easily lock the screen if I walk away for a few minutes, have it dim but not sleep and reboot.
Tapping the power button again works for me to.
Tap, double tap not working here. Shame. Hopefully a fix soon.

Another update on my sleep issue and workaround...
I don't know how things changed; I may have tripped a setting or something but using the LockScreen app was putting it to sleep and triggering the reboot instead of giving the Stay Alive app a chance to catch it, so I quit using the LockScreen and just let it time out and then the Stay Alive app would dim the screen and keep it from timing out. So no reboot, but unfortunately no lock screen; I wanted it to lock. Poked around some more and found an app listed as Hidden Settings for Galaxy but it isn't really Galaxy specific. One of the the things it does is let you set up and enable Daydream mode. It turns out Daydream doesn't work properly on Remix, but it fails in a good way. If you select the clock (or anything else, but stay away from full screen stuff as sometimes that will stay in the way for several seconds) and set it for both docked and charging, then when the screen timeout is reached the clock will show for a couple of seconds and then it will go to the lock screen (assuming you enabled, I guess), not go to sleep and Stay Alive dims the screen. Clunky and convoluted, but it ends up doing exactly what I wanted.
ETA - One other little nit - After it dims on the lock screen, focus is set to the text box and you just have to start typing the password to get the screen to brighten and unlock. Clicking does not cause the screen to brighten, which worried me at first (thought it was hung).

Thanks, Stay Alive works. Be interesting to see what it does to battery life. Hopefully a fix will come.

Just be careful poking around at settings; I did something to make mine have issues with being locked after I had it working. More tweaks got it okay(ish) again. This is not a good solution for battery use; I don't think there really is one if standby doesn't work. Android/Remix doesn't seem to offer levels of powering off. What I would like to do is power off the screen, spin down the disk but leave the processor and wifi powered.

Yep going back to sleep again and not waking up properly with SA. Think will give up until a fix.

Mine is only doing that now on battery and it is usually on wall power. As I use it on battery so rarely, the simple answer is to just set the screen timeout higher when I do. On an older notebook like mine, a battery gives you freedom to move around the house/office with the machine running and maybe run without plugging in for two or three hours. It's my semi-lightweight UPS.
Anyway, I am not giving up. This is the only thing not working perfectly for me. My camera, mic, bluetooth, mouse and wifi all work fine. I stream videos in Youtube, Netflix, TWC TV, Amazon, FB and browsers with good sound and picture; no lag. I connect to work with Microsoft RDP and have less lag than using RDP in Windows. Yesterday I booted over to Windows to increase the size of my data.img (and had no trouble with that) and that definitely hardened my resolve. It is hard to believe I was putting up with that kind of speed just a few days ago. Now that I know I don't have to it seems worse.
After more research, I am back again with what I think is the final answer. I should and likely will write an app to undo this if my battery gets really low, but all you have to do if you never want your machine to go into sleep mode is press Alt-F1 to get the console and then do something like this:
# echo nosleeptilbrooklyn >/sys/power/wake_lock
And then Alt-F7 to get back. I did that as a test, unplugged from the charger and let it sit about 10 minutes with display timeout at 5 minutes. 5 minutes in the screen went dark. That used to be followed by a reboot about 5 seconds later. It did not reboot. When I woke it, it did initially show the main screen and then blanked it and brought up the password screen. For some reason I had to click before I could type (usually don't have to). Anyway, the above "fix" worked. To undo it, I need to just do this:
# echo nosleeptilbrooklyn >/sys/power/wake_unlock
There is a programmatic interface to do pretty much the same thing but with more options and I am thinking I may write something to use that to set the lock and then check the battery on a timer and unlock if it falls below 20% or some other setting.
EDIT TO ADD - A little more poking around yielded info that pretty much all manufacturers have had battery protection for several years now and will not let the battery run down into the kill zone even if the OS is frozen or even if it actively tries to stay alive. I would still advice checking your BIOS and/or doing some research on your particular system but it is likely safe to just leave it locked if you only want it shut down, hibernate or go into standby when you specifically choose that interactively.

Palm PVG100 Screen Wake On Plug & Fully Charged

I'm close to having the phone perfect but these two still persist. There is a myriad of old options for Xposed and I was wondering if anyone has had success with any of them? I use the phone for a GPS unit on a cycle with a dynamo hub, so the waking up is annoying.
I've sorted the sound already, so there are two wake up conditions:-
1. power is enabled
2. battery reaches 100%.
Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I can't help with Xposed, but I have a suggestion and a side question.
My suggestion : try IpBike (with IpBikeKey to unlock it).
The author of IpBike reads and answers e-mails. He is opened to new features if the idea is good.
If IpBike can't force the screen off (I never tested, as I don't charge my device as I cycle !), he may add the feature.
My question : is the PVG100 ANT+ capable ?
I use a Sony-Ericsson Xperia Active as a cycle computer (powered by IpBike), with ANT+ Speed, Cadence and Heart-rate sensors.
I would like to replace it with a PVG100E/EU, but the ANT directory does not list any Palm device.
Have a nice day !
Cobus.
Probably not, ANT is an extra cost for a manufacturer.
I found an open-source app which works. It's a bit old but still it does the job.
Basically it registers itself as an admin app so it can control the screen, then when a wakeup comes in it turns the screen back off. It's quick enough that the screen doesn't get a chance to come on. No root required.

Have you tried enabling "zen mode?" Zen mode keeps everything on the phone from waking I believe. I have tried it, but got annoyed when the wifi would cut out once I turned my screen off, because it would stop what I was listening to. Not sure exactly what you're looking for, but zen mode might be something to play around with.
To activate zen mode, the easiest way is probably through the app "setedit." Under "system" options, scroll to the bottom and change zen mode from 0 to 1.
