Do i need to have OEM Unlock Enabled to flash official samsung firmware note8 n950u - Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Guides, News, & Discussion

so i just got a note 8 its stuck on oreo im not receiving any updates so i thought i outta do it manually but the thing is i dont have the oem unlock option yet do i need it for flashing stock firmware with odin plus what firmware should i flash? i got snapdragon n950u xaa/xaa/tmb its on bootloader v5 i think i need to upgrade to pie

I think OEM unlock, is just to disable Factory Reset Protection if you don't know the original Google account used to register the device.
....whenver the device is wiped.

You can download the tmb stock firmware with samfirm.exe or frija on pc and flash it with Odin.
The OEM switch doesn't do anything to prevent flashing firmware through Odin. Also you won't see it on snapdragons models, only through the combination firmwares.
The OEM switch is used on exynos models to unlock bootloaders. The n950W/U/U1 has LOCKED bootloaders so it doesn't work on them.

Using correct Odin. Try different USB port
Sent from my SM-N986U using Tapatalk

To add to that make sure it's a usb 2 port or lower version. Don't use usb 3 port it seems to cause issues with Odin.

It's strange, more than 10.days i use Horizon room and rooted, but i don't see that "OEM unloock" on developer menu, the root works fine....Question is ... is it problem for my note8 or not?

No
It should be fine! Since your bootloader is already unlocked and rooted.
Some roms hide that OEM unlock switch. Guess to prevent the phone kg state to go to prenormal mode if toggled.

I have tried to use Odin (3.12.3 and 3.12.17) to flash fhese .tar files; however, Odin does not see any files in the folder. Yesterday, I was able to flash an older version of Nougat with a .tar.md5 filename just fine. But it does not see the .tar files at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This doesn't unlock anything. Did you look at the file name to see what "version" they are. Kinda is spelled out in the first 13 or so letters and numbers. Also, these files are for the S7 flat

If you mean sim unlock, the answer is no. Flashing firmware does not lock an unlocked device.

Goto updato.com to download the latest Verizon stock firmware. Extract and flash the files in Odin. If you flash all the files (AP, BL, CP And CSC) you will wipe everything on the phone so backup first. If you don't want to start over, then just flash CP and CSC.
There are two versions, 955U and 955U1. The U version is carrier specific and will contain their own software bloat. The U1 version is unbranded so no carrier bloat.
If you need more details, search for carrier switch.

It is Philippines (XTC) and phone origin is Vietnam, we are in the same CSC group and it should work. Please try exactly what I did.
Flash nougat BL with nov security patch along with the dec nougat build for AP+CP+CSC. After complete installation, I tried flashing TWRP (ofcourse enabling OEM unlock and USB debugging) and it failed. So went again to download mode then flashed BL (the file I attached) along with the dec nougat build. Again completed installation, then successfully flashed TWRP via odin. Afterwards, proceed to rooting my device.

I can not flash BL nougat from the September patch because it has level 2, and my BL is level 3 ....
Are you also Filipino?
Strange, maybe it is country specific issue. Mine has level 2 BL and rest Level 3 per dec build and I was successful flashing it. If you have a way to revert back from previous nougat build, say nov security patch, and can re-root your device, try flashing the latest nougat via flash fire. Use "flash firmware" action button and follow the instructions. Untick the "recovery" checkbox so you maintain twrp. From there, reroot your device through twrp. I also did this process and I was successful doing the whole thing.

If you have flashed level 3 BL initially then you have a slim chance of downgrading your device from previous builds. Maybe I was just lucky enough because I used flashfire at first to upgrade to dec nougat build. I just didn't like settings menu as it was quite different from previous nougat, so I reflashed everything via odin but using level 2 BL and the rest level 3 (dec build). Try to follow the furom from the thread I initially gave you as they have also issues same as yours.

Flashfire doesn't flash bootloaders which is why you were able to root.
I hope there's a other way to install twrp or cwm even the boot loader can't downgrade.?

Unlikely. Once it's locked that's usually it, no modifications possible.
It'll probably be locked down forever now unless Samsung release an unlocked firmware.

Att hasn't switched to 5 yet the latest firmware is still 4 , I went from u firmware to att and sideload the oreo update still in bootloader 4 so I am able to go back to other firmware with ease ,but no root for oero so far the eng boot img doesn't work on oreo and haven't seen one yet , also there is no OEM unlock in dev options as we may still never get an unlocked bootloader with the two step boot that I've read oero has but the oreo firmware is nice seems like s8 though and Bixby is working ,but I would wait on official firmware ,so var sprint and Verizon are locking bootloaders so we can't switch carriers which we legal can do , so I'm assuming other companies are to follow

I have frp off but it's setup. Should i factory reset before trying to flash to u1 or does it not matter? I tried rb7 but it failed. Also i noticed while trying to flash it didn't load ap very well. Normally it freezes for a sec while verifying but it instantly added. Maybe a bad download? I'm downloading rbg now which is an md5 so maybe that was an issue before because the rb7 wasn't. I'll see if that works. Just a lil worried about going to a version 1 bootloader from version 2 as i read that wasn't possible. Hoping for the best. Thanks for the help

Am on U firmware 2ARD3 but am pure stock without carrier bloatware.

I have the same question as OP. What would I accomplish by flashing the T-Mobile V2 U firmware as opposed to the most recent U1? Is there anything I can't manually enable while staying on unlocked? I don't want to go to the V2 bootloader if I don't have to for the time being, at least until we see an unlocked V2 version.

The U1 is pure stock, I personally would stay on it..
The carrier U firmware are just full of bloatware and also contains the userdata for that specific carrier so that some features work properly like voice over LTE etc. If that doesn't bother you then stay on your version because there isn't any V2 bootloader for the U1 firmware

I definitely want those features, is there a way to enable them while on U1? I don't want bloat, but to my understand T-Mobile's bloat isn't too bad.

Well you can flash the T-Mobile userdata file from the U firmware onto your U1 and get the features. As to the bloatware you can disable most of them with bk package disabler :fingers-crossed:

Well I assume you already running the U1 firmware, so you only need to flash the userdata from the U firmware.
Use the userdata from the V1 firmware for T-Mobile, use modded Odin and flash the userdata and you should have T-Mobile features :good:

I'll give that a try. I might just say the hell with it and go full T-Mobile. I assume the next U1 will be on the V2 bootloader.

Lol the U1 are the last to get updates.
Currently the U firmware is on April patch while the U1 is still on February patch

You would see Service provider SW ver. with some information like ATT/TMB/ATT

Flash the U1 firmware, set up device without account.
Then flash T-Mobile U firmware including userdata with T-Mobile SIM inserted

Oh you on V2 bootloader, well you are stuck on it because U1 is on V1. Currently only T-Mobile and AT&T have V2 firmware out so you can try flashing in between.
Am on U firmware 2ARD3 but am pure stock without carrier bloatware.
What are you trying to achieve with the T-Mobile userdata?

I'm a T-Mobile post paid with unlimited everything but mainly wifi calling in areas where reception isn't great is pretty important. Also would like direct video, HD vice, and especially VoLte working. Since all the carrier software is in the user data I just want to have the T-Mobile in place of the att. Phone works well otherwise and I can live with it the way it is for a bit til it gets sorted out. But hopefully there will be an unlocked v2 firmware soon that will flash. Or bootloader unlock!
