Face Recognition Issues - Samsung Galaxy S21 Questions

Is anyone having any problems with facial recognition? I can set up my look (and alternate look) and literally keep my phone in the same place it was when registering my face, and it will give me a 'Face doesn't match' error when I try to unlock the screen. Occasionally it works but its definitely less than 50% of the time.
1) I have a screen protector on the phone but there is a cutout for the front camera.
2) I have verified via the camera app (and during face registration) that there's no debris blocking the lens.
3) I've tried various lighting and it doesn't make any difference.
4) I found a site that suggested clearing app data / cache for 'Face Unlock' but I'm not seeing that app in my app list. I scrolled through the whole list and didn't see anything that seemed to indicate that it was related to face unlock.
I'm coming from a Pixel 4, OnePlus 6T, and tested an iPhone 12 and never had any issues with those phones. I understand that they may be using some more advanced camera / infrared tech to detect the face, however, I don't understand how I can register my face and, without moving the phone immediately try to unlock it, and it fails.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try?
Thanks!

I come from a Pixel 4Xl and compared to that the s21 ultra face recognition is really poor, I do realise that the pixel has the sensor, but the s21 is just a shame ATM. Hope they fix it.
Otherwise I'll disable it as the fingerprint is OK .

[Q] Galaxy S2 Camera Problem...

I have a Galaxy S2 that I'm trying to get working right for my Daughter.
It has a problem with the camera. The phone works fine in it's entirety, except the camera. When you go into it, all looks fine, except the screen is blank. The icons are all there, they rotate as you rotate the screen, then 'depress' when you press them, but nothing actually works. The menu button at the bottom brings up the 'Edit Shortcuts' function, but at this point the camera app hangs and the only way to get out of it is to press the 'Home Button. Going back into the camera, it's where it was left, but still unresponsive. Here is a video of what it does, apologies that it's not always in focus, but gives the idea.
(I'm unable to post a YouTube link!! - Please go to YouTube and add this to the address - /watch?v=pxvZKN8opFA
I've tried :-
Clear Camera Data
Factory Reset
Factory Reset + Wipe Cache
Reinstall Factory ROM package via Odin (XEU-I9100XWLSW)
...and various combinations of the above.
The phone is usable, but I'm a stubborn SOB and I really want to get it all working. Any ideas? I've seen a few threads over the 'net but nothing has helped me diagnose the problem with this phone....
Given you've already tried the obvious, it's fairly obvious what's going on & what the problem/fix is - the sensor is probably cactus = replace camera (if the working camera is important).

To be honest, it's not that obvious.
If it's the camera module at fault, it might be worth repairing. However, if it's more likely to be the motherboard, then probably not. Hence the question, to see if anyone had encountered the same problem.
To be honest, there's no way of telling whether it's the motherboard or camera module......
We don't have the phone in front of us to be able to diagnose the possible reasons. The camera breaking (for whatever reason) is a very rare occurrence for the S2, I think your thread is only about the 3rd thread of this type I've seen in nearly 20 months on this forum. The camera module itself is reasonably cheap/easy to replace......that is where I'd look first.....but (if memory serves me) I think I've read that there are 2 different versions of the module and they're not cross compatible..... So be aware that this might be a potential stumbling block.....
Here might be a good place to start your search......

Z2 Play Oreo bugs list - what have you found ?

So, I updated my Moto to Oreo yesterday using fastboot method. Quick and painless process.
But after initial setup and check "what's new" I've noticed first bug. Then I thought : maybe we could make a list with all the bugs we spotted ?
Just in case, so maybe we could also keep track when (or if) they will be eliminated ?
So, put your findings there - but I propose that it should be done only by those who already tried factory reset on their phones or complete wipe during flashing. Just to avoid the bugs which come from previous setup leftovers on the phone.
So, my entry to the list is :
- when setting up ringtones - notifications, when I play the selected sound it's most often played back very quietly for the first time, the second time I click the same sound it's played back with normal volume.
By the way, the audio equalizer is working properly now - for me this was the most important change
Found a few.
- Sound glitch is still here, can be unnoticed, but I found a funny thing now. When playing music, with Spotify, YT or similar; you can get a weird glitch in where the sounds goes up and down fast. You need to stop the audio source, and wait few seconds to keep playing.
- Nav Bar, moves a lot so you can really notice when the icons are slightly up or down. I understand why; to avoid damaged pixels, but is funny.
- Nav Bar again. It can be unresponsive, needing to press it twice to allow usage. Solve for this was to start the Moto App, enable the fingeprint sensor and just disable again. It makes the nav bar Works normally then.
- EQ finally Works. But you need to get into a move few options unless is gonna be bass oriented even after you open the EQ settings, you would see a flat config, but the sound match a bass oriented way. Solve is just to mess aroung a Little until is working correctly.
- Moto App Launcher still stops working along with Google. Easy workaround is just Forcing Quit, and go back home. Other workaround for me was being in the Beta testing for the Google. alongside better performance and less problems with Moto App Launcher you can use the Pixel at Glance widget.
So far what I got
Hey there, I've got a few bugs to report to the INDIAN unit of MOTO Z2 PLAY 64GB 4G
1. I've MOTO Z PLAY too and i compared both the devices after the oreo update, in Z i can change the icon shape to round, circle square etc. But it's missing in the MOTO Z2 PLAY
2. I cannot make or receive calls using JIO 4G sim even though i can use this sim on another android mobile MOTO Z and can easily make and recieve calls from there, although the internet is working fine with. MOTO Z2 PLAY
Theae are the major 2 bugs I've found till now..
My Battery life is lower.
ive never seen Batterysaver orange until I updated. Now I have to dust off my TP mod.
Hey guys i need help, i have stock oreo on my Z2. After upgrading it was giving up some issue while on lockscreen and even delay in showing up moto display. then i format my phone and it all well, then i installed greenify and gave it access via adb commands, and the passing of lockscreen again start giving issues, i revoked the greenify commands and still it is giving the same lag on passing lockscreen and drlay in moto display to appear. Can i do something other than full format and without loosing my data.
Mine's performance and battery life have actually improved. I get 6+ hours battery life throughout the day, something I never got in nougat.
The only thing I've noticed is that the screen sometimes doesn't wake up when I pick up the phone, but it's very rare and it also happened to me in Nougat.
So far so good.

Yeah, the battery is now amazing. First day i got 9h SOT and 20h total. With less usage I get 40 hours with 5,5h SOT! On Nougat it was like 24 hours and 6h SOT.
The only issue I have is that Moto Key force closes sometimes.
Is it normal, that gmail syncs like every 10 min. and that on Oreo this is shown in the Statusbar?
I've found the Nav Bar unresponsive, too.

Same here, went back to FP navigation, and that's a pain with Screen protector installed....
P2P feature
P2P feature not working for YouTube or Google map or any app
I also have this issue, PiP is not working for me, there is no option in settings for this but the specific for every app, and for all of them it is active. What I have noticed is that the camera image seems to be more "dusty" like with a higher ISO this did not happened with Nougat, I have not verified image results after photographs. I also have a very impressive battery life.
I don't think this counts as a bug, but it is something that is making me crazy since I upgraded to Oreo:
-"Ok Google" detection now only works when the screen is on (if "trusted voice" is on, it will work in the lockscreen, but never when the screen is off).
The option related to "Ok Google" detection changed from "anytime" to something that indicates that the screen has to be on. I had a Moto X (2013) some time ago, and something that I loved about that device was how I could ask google to do some things even if the screen was off. I loved that about my Moto Z2 Play running Nougat, and I didn't expect it to stop working like that with the upgrade.
Does anyone know if it is possible to make it work with the screen off like before? Thanks in advance!
Thank you so much for posting this, you saved me man! I was just about to tap update before i saw this post. The only reason i bought a Moto Z2 Play in the first place is because it was one of the few phones that allowed OK Google detection while the screen is OFF. Very sad to learn they removed this feature in Oreo, though now i think i understand why everyone is reporting better battery life. In Nougat a microphone was always listening for "OK Google" and thus constantly consuming a certain amount of power. According to your post this is seems to no longer be the case.
I doubt that this will ever be addressed so i won't be upgrading to Oreo, having to approach your phone for Google Assistant to acknowledge voice commands is unacceptable, and the fact that only some flagship phones allow it is an embarrassment.

Clear data of the Google App.
I'm on Oreo on the Z² Play and Ok Google works just fine with the screen off.

Also turn it on as a "Trust Agent" in settings-->security, if you have a screenlock.
You'll also find Moto Voice's Screen unLock activation there. if you use it.
I am scared of upgrading to Oreo since i have no sure way of knowing if i my phone will lose the ability to recognize "OK Google" when the screen is off. If i suffer the same fate as ClowReedd there would be no way for me to roll back and i would lose the functionality i bought this phone for in the first place. Motorola support is incapable of understanding the difference between a phone that can be unlocked with "OK Google" when the screen is completely off and a phone that can achieve the same only when you manually push the power button so you can see the lock screen. But to be fair there is no company in the world whose support is capable of understanding this, i had an extremely difficult time selecting a phone to purchase because of this. Multiple Samsung employees for example would either claim a certain Samsung model that i know has this capability doesn't have it, or claim that a phone that i know doesn't does. Google is also of no help, i have tried to find a list of phones with this capability and got nowhere. Most flagships have it( though some do not), but most midrange phones do not. Which is the only reason i bought a Moto Z2 Play.
Hopefully ClowReedd will respond whether or not clearing the Google app data fixes the issue, since if it doesn't nothing can be done. Google provides absolutely no support for it's assistant other than copy pasted responses online from what i have to assume are bots.

Exactly how many people have reported such an issue? If it was common, Motorola would probably know exactly what you are talking about. Have you searched the MZ²P forums? how many posts have you found?

The ability for Google Now, to unlock phone and carry out tasks/commands. Is the User Agent, as I posted above.

Well we already have 1 report in this thread, and it is not hard to imagine that a detail like this would go unreported since i am not even sure if it is a bug. Also a lot of people including yourself don't even know the difference between Google Assistant(i am guessing that is what you mean by Google Now) being able to unlock the phone and being able to wake and then unlock the phone when the screen is completely off.
Most people do not care one way or the other which is why this change could easily go unreported, assuming it is indeed a bug and not just an intentional change to conserve battery life.

if you look hard enough, you'll find ONE person who's phone exploded.
These forums are for solving problems, not to alleviate your FEARS.
Many things MIGHT happen, there is no point clogging up the threads listing all of them.
If you have a problem, let's solve it,. If you are worried your phone will attract lightning ?, there's no helping you.
Handsfree is important to me, since the 2013 Moto X, (I've had many Moto phones since), It's an invaluable function when phone is lost in the couch cushions.
You are thinking too hard, and making assumptions, I know exactly what you are talking about. Waking the phone and unlocking it are lumped together, what good is a feature that wakes the phone but doesn't unlock it (it can be optionally restricted), likewise what good is handsfree activation, if it can't wake the phone? it seems redundant to spell that out!
Google Now, was the original name for the Google Assistant, phased out last year, let's not nitpick.
BTW: it's fairly easy to go back to Nougat, should you desire it.
Regarding Picture in Picture mode, particularly for Youtube - this is a limitation that Google has put in place that only USA users can access, unless you purchase Youtube Premium. Can confirm PIP works with VLC media player. Netflix only has PIP with 8.1

LG v30 lock screen when cover is closed

Does LG V30 have this feature? I tried downloading Auto Screen On Off(Smart Cover) app and would be good if not for the fact that it locks phone as administrator which disables fingerprint scanner unlock.
I believe a handful of devs have worked on this as well as my self and none have been able to make it work.
There are some settings for it built into the global system settings, but modifying those has not worked for me.
Maybe your post will breathe a little life into this and someone will come forward with an answer, but as of now, it seems to be disabled or missing a necessary component.
Thanks for the answer. It's strange to me esp given that it seems that the phone has everything needed to make it work out of the box.
Also mentioned by me app works kind of, it just disables the possibility to use fingerprint unlock. Is it blocked somehow on the android level then? If so wouldn't it be possible to unlock with stock/clean android?
What's even more strange is that there is Quick Circle capabilities still built into the stock apps. But that could just be code leftover for other models. See pictures for reference.
The third picture is from the global settings and you'll notice there are still settings for the closing sound and cover type. But I've tried modifying a few things and still can't get it to recognize the opening and closing.

Snapdragon S10/+/e owners please read: Possible bug with lag and stuttering

Guys, before you reply with any feedback, please read the following post and links in full. It would also help if you posted details of your device like the following, which is mine:
Model: SM-G9750 (Hong Kong S10+)
Build number: G9750ZHU1ASF1
Completely stock, no settings changed
Only YouTube Vanced installed (for testing purposes)

Summary: An intermittent stutter or lag (most notably during fullscreen 4K HDR playback, in my case) which only goes away when you activate certain screen recorder applications like Game Tools or AZ Screen Recorder.
Below is a list of posts that highlight this problem that I and a few others are experiencing. The common denominator here is the use of a screen recorder, which removes any present stutter or lag.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/lag-stutter-overall-choppy-t3914381
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/btwfbl/anyone_experiencing_stuttering_or_frame_drops_on/
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b79cw3/is_snapdragon_really_that_much_worse_than_exynos/
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/b4nftn/snapdragon_s10_laggy_on_4k_youtube_playback/ (video evidence of problem)
The following two are from myself. My problem is that all 4K HDR content (could extend to other formats also but I need to do more testing) is stuttering or dropping frames. Screen recorder on and boom - it's smooth.
https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxys10/comments/ch172q/snapdragon_owners_does_this_type_of_video_play/
https://forum.xda-developers.com/s10-plus/help/sm-g9750-video-playback-throttled-t3950757
The lag returns as soon as you deactivate screen recording, which suggests that this is either a bug with the CPU or GPU not being optimized or boosting its frequencies properly, leading to these stutters.
I've put Snapdragon in the title as these posts all appear to be from Snapdragon owners, whether it's the US or HK variant. I don't recall ever having this issue as a last generation S9 Exynos owner. If you are an S10/+/e Exynos owner and encountering this issue, you could still try using your phone normally, with a screen recorder active and then without, to see if there is any performance gain (as crazy as it sounds, it might actually make a difference).
Below is a test I'm using to demonstrate this problem. It involves installing apps (namely YouTube Vanced and either one of two screen recorders I've tested it with), so it's not the most convenient. If I find a better method, I will update the post accordingly.
You will need YouTube Vanced. I'm suggesting Vanced because the original YouTube app doesn't let you view at 4K resolution.
Firstly, open Vanced and tap the account icon in the upper right. Go to settings, Vanced settings, Video settings and then toggle Resolution Checks to ON. Refresh and restart the app.
Now open Game Launcher, tap the three dots in the upper right > Add apps and add YouTube Vanced to the list. We're doing this for the screen recording function which I'll mention later.
Note: if you don't have Game Launcher or Game Tools, you can try AZ Screen Recorder as an alternative. Nice Shot does not work.
Once that's done, here's a 4K 60fps clip for you to try. It should be easier to perceive any hiccups with the higher frame rate. Please set the resolution to 2160p (tap the three dots in the upper right) and watch in fullscreen / landscape orientation:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXb3EKWsInQ
Panning shots work best. For reference, see points 0:19, 0:46, 1:48, 2:14, 2:42, 3:04, 4:11 and 4:41 in the video. Does it look like it's stuttering or dropping frames intermittently?.
Now, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to show the navigation bar (you need the navigation bar enabled to use the recording function) and tap on Game Tools, which is the leftmost button. Tap Record.
While the screen is recording, are the stutters now gone? To my eyes, the video plays back perfectly while the recorder is active.

Yeah my S10 is crazy laggy, way laggier than my old S9+ ever was.
I still have it but I got a OnePlus 7 Pro instead of it, absolutely zero regrets. I'll try what you suggested, my lag also didn't go away after a factory reset. I'll reply again with the results.
---------- Post added at 02:10 ---------- Previous post was at 02:05 ----------
So my lag actually got way worse with screen recording, very stutter and no animations were smooth at all. The phone is a fresh install and I don't have a MicroSD card in it either.
Nope, no lag here and I would recognize it if I had it. I have to run a screen recorder from time to time and I see no difference with or without it. I have also never used One UI after the first 5 minutes of trying it. I also don't see enough people complaining to say this is a widespread problem.

Well that sucks, sorry to hear. Screen recording is the only fix from what I've found (if you could even call it a fix). I'm looking at the OP7P as a possible replacement, I don't think I can wait for an update that may or may not solve the problem.
Could I ask what was lagging specifically? Was it just the UI or video, or just everything in general?

It's not widespread, no, but I'm having it and so are a few other people. I only use Nova but One UI was no different so the launcher is not to blame, it's more likely an optimization issue that Samsung borked.
Should probably mention that I have the HK S10+, I don't know if it's particular to this model but the links in OP don't seem to suggest so.

Video playback is just fine, everything else is laggy. UI is a stuttery mess.
My S10 is not laggy, I don't know what others are seeing. I come from S7 Edge and S9, so I know how they feel.
Maybe we need to be more specific about our models when we talk. Mine is SM-G973U1 (unlocked US).
Standard UI, apps from the Google store only, developer mode active (for playing with Bluetooth codecs), build number G973U1UES1ASDB.

edit: updated OP
***UPDATE*** Okay now I've just encountered the strangest thing: When watching the video, if I keep my finger touching the screen (as in held down anywhere), the stutter goes away! The moment I lift my finger, it gets laggy again. Wtf is going on?
Before anyone asks, I'm caseless and have tried the Accidental touch protection and sensitivity options, those don't seem to do anything. Anyone able to explain what the real issue might be here?
Found a solution for me at reddit /r/galaxys10/comments/bgka23/lag_and_stuttering/
In short, you have to reboot after using DeX

Swap cameras

Is there a way to force main camera as front camera?
Let me explain:
I just bought this phone a week ago, and I love everything about it, but I have a problem. In order to log into my banking app for the first time I need to pass face recognition, but everytime the front camera shows up the picture is black, so the app cannot see my face.
The front camera works perfect with any other app so it's not a problem with my phone. Then I try the app on another three LG V60s and the result was the same. I call my bank and the say they cannot do anything about it, that I need to pass face recognition in order to open my bank app, and they suggest me to change my phone for another brand and model.
So I was thinking that if there's a way to use the main camera as the selfie one maybe I can pass face recognition, or maybe connecting a USB webcam and make it the "default" front camera, so I don't need to throw away this wonderful phone
