You're obviously new to this so I'd like to ask you not to do it. Flashing ROM or whatever you want to flash doesn't necessarily make your device better, also if you make a mistake - Usually that ends in bricking the device - then no one is responsible but you, and you'll have very hard time fixing the device.
Don't waste time and good working device for whatever reason you want to do this.
If you're still persistent on flashing your device may I know why you want to do it?

Yes I am newbie to these android boxes or tv boxes.
I purchased this box from local store 2 yrs ago. Not all channels stopped working. The box itself works (can't do much).
I wanted to delete whatever software they have installed and install basic Android, where I can install my own apps. Mostly iPTV smarter app.
that box right now is useless to me.
Is Linux box same as andriod? (sorry this could be a different question)
I believe they installed linux on Andriod box. Based on this, my menu looks just like this

What's your device model? There may be different ways to do it.
No, linux is obviously different from android box. Can't say which is better, but generally speaking I'd prefer android.

I came across HD100C box as well.

It's device specific so if you can't find the device model then I can't do much.
As for flashing you can only apply update which obviously doesn't do what you want, but you can try factory resetting. Some bloatware can be removed by factory resetting. Here is how.
Alternatively you can use SD card to apply update from it - Should you find the firmware - by following this guide.

I've been working with him on another site about this and have told him pretty much the same thing you have. This is his Device model HD-5301B IPMacro this is all I could find on it
CPU: RT6856 MediaTek SoC 700Mhz MIPS
OS: Androdi INNOXPLAY
It most certainly does not Have an Amlogic S905X in it. He want to flash it with custom firmware because it's a locked one provider box that he cannot sideload apk's to. Thing is there is just not a custom firmware out there for it. I've spent way more time looking for one for him than I wanted to but I'm a nice guy. I've told him to chalk it up as a learning experience. Don't buy one provider boxes and get something that's main stream that way you stand a better chance of doing things with it in the future.

Good people should really stop trying imo, like the more you try the more the dude you're talking to asks.
And usually just impudently asks for the unreasonable without doing any research whatsoever by themselves, how rude can someone get?
Anyway lemme give you and people like you a cookie. Don't actually listen to my opinion, good natured people like you are still needed.

thanks, I appreciate that. its a good learning experience.
One thing I wanted pull back from my post is that my box is not IPmacro 5301. IPmacro is just another vendor selling that box. I digg alot of other vendors. Such as NoorHDTV, unitedTV, catcast etc. they all have same box, but under different name.
Just found another vendor http://androidtvboxquadcore.org/201...an-400-channels-two-years-of-service-include/
See attached photo of the safe mode window. what is this URL used for? I do have a paid iPTV service, should I add that here? or should I add the m3u URL directly here?
my question is still outstanding, whether my box is android or Linux?

Thank you for the compliment I am good natured. I'm actually disabled and can't work anymore so helping people let's me feel I'm still useful in the world. lol I Have a TranSpeed 8K Ultra-HD S905X3 box that came with truly cheesy firmware so I set out on a mission to make the box as good as possible without a worry over ruining it. I wasn't going to use it as it was. After several failures trying to find a suitable firmware and bricking it several times I found the SlimBox Rom and am a happy camper.
Before I found the SlimBox I set out on a mission to take another firmware that worked good but wasn't set up for my wifi chip and remote configs and fix it myself. I got as far as getting it unpacked and finding the files I needed to do the fix but wasn't able to repack it. There just not a lot of good software out there for Android 9.0 or there wasn't at the time. Ok I'm rambling have a great evening.

I just connected my box using usb male cable and nothing is happening to USB burning tool or making any sound to my PC.

Did you find the reset button and have it pushed when you powered up the device?

I did. all it does, restarted my box. I can enter the safe mode menu/security menu by just pressing 0 few times at reboot, so I don't know how useful that button. Its hard too.

Disconnect the box completely from everything but the power. Have to the box shut off depress the reset switch then plug the usb into the USB 2.0 port on the box. Then the burner should detect the box. Make sure the USB cable is rated for data transfer and the you are plugged into USB 2.0 port on the PC.

I have this cable
QVS USB 3.1 (Gen 1 Type-A) Male to USB 3.1 (Gen 1 Type-A) Male Cable 3 ft. - Black - Micro Center
Get it now! This cable connects your computer to any USB device with Type A female port. Works with development boards that uses USB Type-A female ports including JTAG programming modules. It is USB 3.0/3.
www.microcenter.com
I have one cable for HDMI connected
Other is the power.
3rd is the USB male A to Male A
I noticed, even when the power cable is disconnected the box seems on because USB cable is connected.
Some people said, to press the reset button, then connect usb to PC? I did that too nothing happens.
If I have the wrong img file, it should still at least detect it?

You know that reminds me. It's been a good while since I've done this and my memory ain't what it used to be. disconnect the power also. You don't want the box connected to anything. Then press the reset and then connect the USB.

what else I should do? I am able to run the upgrade.bin file via USB from this website http://www.eweat.com/download/iptv-box-linux/
It does complets the upgrade process. but the software is still there. I tried downloading some other .bin file and tried, to run that as upgrade it failed. so I know that website upgrade.bin is correct.

The ROM is a Disk Image File. I Don't know what to tell you. I'm not going to help you brick the box. Maybe somebody else will chime in because this is above my knowledge level.

[REVIEW / DOA SO FAR] Official Malata USB/LAN Adapter

Just wanted to touch base to see if there potentially may be any interest in something like this? I have one on the way for review and to see if they even work with our gTab. Rumor was the price point was going to be around $20 - $25.
When I get it tested I will post the findings and see what you guys think!
[EDIT] - so far I can't get it to work. I've tried just throwing it in while it's on as well as having it powered down (like the dock) to allow the DNS to propagate. No dice so far. I'll check with the supplier to see if there is an app to make it work.

Interested in outcome but not really looking to buy. WiFi is solid enough and with existing dock if I need LAN (haven't yet) I have it along with the HDMI and other.
Thanks!
When would you use this?
I'm trying to imagine a time it would come in handy. Ideas?
Maybe it uses a kernel module that isn't included in your kernel. I don't know what ROM/kernel you are using (I use stock), but possibly the pl2303 module. If you have a Linux PC handy, you can check for some info. Before plugging it into the Linux box, open a terminal and run this command:
Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Then plug it in, and see what it tells you. Use Ctrl + c to end it.
You can also check which modules are loaded with this command, new modules are at the top of the list:
Code:
lsmod
I also am not sure if I would ever use something like that. My ZT-180 came with something similar, but with a miniUSB end, and I have never found the need to even try it.

Where hardware is related, a VM may not give the needed results. That is because a VM may use it's own drivers.
If you have an Ubuntu installation CD, you can boot that as a live CD. It will run only on system memory, so it may be a bit laggy. That will work just like an installed Linux system.
Any progress on this?
I am very interested to find a USB to ethernet adapter for my Gtab. I do a lot of networking with switchs and ISP providers. It would be awesome if this little USB device would work. Any updates?
probably driver related
This looks like one of the adaptors that have been around for the Wii console for a while.
Clemsyn's kernel has a bunch of USB drivers added that are removed (or are back level) in the stock Viewsonic kernel. I suggest that you give it a go.
Pershoot's kernel is a more involved process to select the bits that you want. So I'd start by trying Clemsyn's first.

I have a dell laptop that I recently dropped. The wireless stopped working. Thankfully, everything else seems fine. I had to go out and buy a wireless usb adapter.
>>I have a dell laptop that I recently dropped. The wireless stopped working.
Did you pop open the panel on the bottom and check to see if the little wifi riser card didn't just pop out of its slot?
May not apply in your case, but sometimes the Modem/LAN/Wifi is on a little card that plugs into a header on the motherboard. There's usually an access panel on the bottom to get at it - check that it's properly seated and all connectors are secure, etc.
You can also usually swap them out if they die. Check Ebay.

I could see this being handy for a road warrier to watch streamed content in a hotel if he or she didn't want to bring the heavier dock along. Often time wifi is sketchy at best in some locations but many hotels were wired with CAT5 to each room and have a cord curled up in the desk. I often break out my CAT5 adapter to string two cords together so my laptop can rest on the bed and I have faster speeds (and frankly a more secure connection with my VPN) while resting against the many pillows. Beats sitting at the desk with the dock propped up.
Let us know how you make out getting this to work.
Anyone get this to work? I just ordered a gtab and it would be great to have a wired ethernet port for configuring many of the network devices I deal with on a daily basis.

You have to edit a file to enable the ethernet.

*Edit* My apologies. This is a fix for the Malata dock w/ethernet. No idea if it works for the adapter or not.
Alternative usb/lan adapter
I found a USB/LAN adapter for android tablets on euogo dot com for $10. Do a search for this item number: TPGA-ULNA
If you do a google search, "usb to lan adapter for android", many other brands / models also appear.
Does anyone think any of them will work with the Gtab?
Considering the rumor that the dock may be discontinued and that an HDMI cable is on the way, a USB/LAN adapter for the Gtab would be easier to carry around than the dock / power adapter combo.
Warning: 1st time poster = NOOB. Pls. be kind.
You may want to check my posts on making Ethernet on the Dock work. If the device works at all, it should be the same process.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=14367749&postcount=41
I could use this at work where they won't allow wireless connections.
As network admin, I will definitely love to have opportunity to connect my tablet to LAN network.
Pretty often it happens, that I am installing new WiFi routers, so for initial config, I need to grab my 17" laptop and connect by cable. It would be much more comfortable to just use my tablet ;-)

cideko simple box

I recently got my hands on a quite interesting device, a cideko simple box.
Just for the sake of it, I'd like to hack it, and maybe even get a custom rom on it.
It's basically a set-up-multimedia-thingy-box for a TV running android, and it's pretty damn cheap.
Using adb via TCP/IP I was already able to connect and also get a rootshell (yay!)
However, it seems like no firmware files/instructions how to flash are available by the manufacturer (nay!)... I already asked them nicely, let's see what I get back.
You can find the adb bugreport output here if you're curious.
Anyone wants to help?
Florian
Saw this hardware before. 600Mhz, no openGL or any accelleration for games, nothing.
It does play back media files, but that's about it.
Very low-end chipset from Skyviia.. ARMv5TEJ at ~228 bogomips is pretty bad.
Does it support the install of apk files from USB? and does it allow flash on websites?

I have one too. I like the device and the air keyboard, plus it was pretty cheap. I was really pleased that SMB/CIFS support worked out of the box and witha few other things, but thats where it stops. The software included is the let down, not the machine itself. Video playback is out of sync 99% of the time until you fast forward and/or rewind then it magically syncs up again, only 1 CIFS connection at a time, the vast majority of apps will not install and those that do fail to run, the video software displays long file names in such a way, that you cannot determine which file is which, etc. I sent Cideko an email asking them to pretty please provide a new update addressing these issues, but I heard nothing back and I sent it months ago.
The picture is good, the device is unobtrusive and if you rename your file appropriately then it is a bearable media streamer, but it could have been the best little cheap media box ever with just a little care and attention. Disappointing that no one is interested in improving it.

[Q] Suggestions for new project (with bounty)?

I'm looking at this inexpensive HDTV tuner/DVR. I'm guessing that they're ARM/Android-based but I'm going to buy one and open it up to see what's inside. It has all the makings of a cool, inexpensive little OTA DVR box - ATSC tuner, HDMI output, and a USB port for a TB storage drive. I originally bought the wrong (previous) model and played around with it. It was pretty responsive/seemed to have enough horsepower. Picture quality was good. DVR functionality didn't seem to work properly and the EPG was utter crap. If it's ARM/Android based and could be rooted, we could probably get XBMC on it and this thing would be a TiVo Roamio KILLER.
I could try to root it on my own but I've never done anything like that before and wouldn't know where to start. Can anyone point me toward any "how to root an Android device" resources?
I'm not without skills, but it would probably be better to just post a bounty and get help from the experts. What's the best way to go about doing something like that? What kinds of details do I need and how do I come up with the terms for the bounty? And WHERE would I post it?
I should probably add that I've googled rooting Android devices and the resulting haystack is focused on rooting phones. There's no MicroSD card to play with here - only the USB port - and no bootloader or BIOS prompt that I can see.
You could either try to get access through a serial or jtag connector, that is for example, how it was possible to change the firmware on the Fonera FON2100, which is maybe the easiest way.
Or you could try do disassemble a firmware update for this Router and reassemble it to work in your desired way, e.g. flash a different firmware.
Or you could try the numerous combinations of keys to press, where one may lead to something like fastboot.
But if it is really some sort of android-based you should try the various root-methodes like towelroot first.

Reverse Tethering on T-820 (Option not available)

I want to be able to plug my new Galaxy Tab S3 (T-820) into my desktop computer or laptop via the USB C cable and not just move files back and forth, (which works fine), but ALSO have access to my desktop's internet connection through USB. I don't want to use WiFi.
I have an Ethernet to USB C dongle, which works fine, but it doesn't allow me to share files or charge my tablet. I'd like to be able to do all three at the same time.
In many of the "How To" articles out there where "Reverse Tethering" is described, they helpfully list the various buttons and widgets to click in order to enable this feature. However the authors always refer to menu items and buttons which don't appear under my tablet's settings. They're not just greyed out. They're simply absent. So that doesn't work.
Neither do any of the various apps on the Google Play Store and elsewhere which promise to provide reverse tethering. They just don't work.
SO...
Being new to the Android (and the smartphone) universe, I did a ton of homework and have so far figured out how to...
Root my tablet. (Done!)
Wade through the swamp of TWRP, ODIN, etc., while tripping spectacularly over the various speed bumps and permission walls provided by the likes of Samsung and Google's paranoid anti-theft (and it would seem from my use case, their anti-happiness) feature set.
Successfully install different flavors of Android.
Install both Magisk and Xposed and try their tethering unlockers with negative results.
After a week of little sleep, I've managed to get through all of this torturous nonsense and amaze myself by not having bricked or totally spoiled my tablet. It still functions! After all the warranty-voiding BS I've crammed through it, I'm feeling quite lucky.
However... I still don't have the ability to tether/reverse tether!
I've learned a lot, but I still feel mostly like a dazed and confused script kiddie (remember when 'script kiddie' was a term? Well for me, it still applies nicely.) I'm trying my level best, but various elements of this whole exercise remain opaque. This is my first post in any forum asking for advice because I finally hit the outer bounds of my DIY energies and pride.
So, if you will indulge my humble request, what I want to know is...
1. Is my tablet even capable on a hardware level of performing a reverse tether, or has the manufacturer locked that feature out so that even a ROM which promises to turn it on will fail to do so?
AND...
2. If it IS possible for a ROM to turn on the tether/reverse tether feature, which one is it and where can I find it?
2a. If there is another solution.., what is it?
I'm currently on...
Android Version 8.0.0
Samsung Experience version 9.0
Kernel Version 3.18.71-13482624
Build Number R16NW.T820XXU1BRE2
I bought this unit off Amazon; it was a refurb and I didn't get it through some cellular provider nor do I have a phone plan. I don't know where this tablet originally came from, but it was all new, sealed and shiny in the box when I got it.
Thanks!
I can appreciate losing a week of sleep. But I don't understand why you need to reverse tether. Enable WiFi and there you go. I think the last time I needed to tether a device through my laptop's internet connection would have been the 1990s.
FWIW the USB-C connector on the TAB S3 is different because if you want to drive an HDMI monitor you need a DisplayLink chip enabled dongle and DisplayLink Presenter app running on the Tab S3. Whereas on my TAB S4 I can just plug any regular old USB-C -> HDMI dongle and display on the monitor. So odds are trying to get reverse tethering working on the Tab S3 is going to be an exercise in futility.
Hi there, you still looking for reverse tethering for android? i found & use this for a while... you can check github link here : https://github.com/Genymobile/gnirehtet
working well on my S3.
Holy cow, it works!

What...? It worked?! Thank-you!
It's hard to believe how much effort and research I'd put into this, how many promising fixes I tried and which failed. In truth I'd given up weeks ago and found myself scornfully looking at the expensive tablet by my desk, wondering if I should hang on to it for its limited uses or sell it on eBay.
Thanks for posting! I can now do what I wanted with this machine.
For others, just follow the directions on the github link provided in the previous post.
I just scrolling around to find fixes for wifi issue - it connect & reconnect every times when on my office connection. Since me unable to use wifi, i try to find the work around using LAN connection. Then i found that.
Happy i can help others. Cheers mate.

Anyone been able to do anything with a Facebook Portal?

Been looking at the Facebook Portal, it's got a USB-C port on the back but according to Facebook's support it's only used "in the factory", so I'm assuming maybe that's something they might use with a flashing tool to reset damaged units. Has anyone messed around with one/found out anything about how it might work? I've noticed that, at least with mine, if I hold down power and the volume up button while it's booting, the screen remains black but the mic light is still on. Thinking this may be some kind of recovery mode perhaps.
Wow, you bought one? I can't imagine.

Oh definitely not. Wouldn't be caught dead buying one. XD Was gifted one as an early christmas gift by a friend, but trying to decide if it's something I can do anything with before I maybe... return it and get a better alexa-enabled device. Feeling really bad about that though considering they wanted to use it to communicate.
Ah-ha! Alexa enabled, but what powers it? Is it some open source thing? AOSP even?

From what I’ve been able to gather, it’s running on some form of AOSP with a custom Portal skin- haven’t been able to get much more info than that though as the info on the device past what FB has put out publicly is pretty slim. Definitely doesn’t surprise me that it’s an android device though considering that’s just about all FB seems to develop for outside of the web (Oculus Go, Facebook Home, etc.)
Would be really interesting to try using Discord on this device though, and possibly finding a way to disable FB functions. Might make it a good gift then, if not it’s making it really hard to hold onto it.
Edit: This is my source for AOSP, assuming it’s the “Android Open Source Framework” mentioned:
https://techcrunch.com/2018/10/08/facebook-portal/amp/
I got my hands on one (free gift from company) but I'm trying to figure out what to do with it too.
Hello everyone, sorry I am late to the party. It is definitely android. If you run the chromium browser and attempt to open something like a pdf file, chromium will give you an error and ask for download permissions. This error message also gives you a link to the applications settings page from where you get access to some of the settings. No permissions sadly. You can however go in to the battery optimization settings and filter for all apps and get a full list of everything installed. As can be seen in these images on imgur /a/QWqs0pP
Portal USB-C is video out!

We're stoked. We've been using the 15 inch Portal in our conference room. Hooked up a usb-c to HDMI adapter, ran it to our conference room 4K television and bam! Absolutely gorgeous.
Works flawlessly as an output, and even audio (as would be expected) is now running through the monitor.
Oh niiiice ! I actually asked facebook portal customer support, and they said nothin could be done with the usb c port ! It really is a shame cuz some people probably want to output to a bigger screen !
I want to try if usb c headphones and microphones will work. I don't have any around though !
I've tested and seen that I can use the port as a usb c PD charger, it charges my macbook pro and oneplus 6
Maybe we can figure out a way to use ADB to get us into the portal ?

Oh wait, never mind charging my macbook pro. It does so only intermittently, I should've guessed the power was too low !
So, any luck unlocking the bootloader or even getting ADB out the USB-C ?

Is there nothing that's more information greedy you could run? ;p
USB-C to 3.5 mm audio only alternate mode?
Can anyone please test and let me know if a USB-C to 3.5mm analog audio jack also works - for 3.5 mm jack headphones or speaker out? More specifically, an active adapter because a passive one may not work. Such as this one: amazon.com/Tranesca-Headphone-Adapter-Compatible-Google/dp/B07M6Z2KJ4
What I do know from reading this thread is the Facebook Portal's:
- USB-C Video out (DisplayPort Alternate mode) to monitor works along with audio (monitor passthrough)
- It works as a USB-C power delivery charger
But if audio thru DisplayPort works means only audio to 3.5 mm jack will also work?
Interestingly, the official documentation (portalfb.me/2NAdtz1) claims the audio will continue to come from Portal's speakers. But people here claim it is transmitted to the monitor?
the portal burnt due to an electricity hazard overseas.
I just bought the newest Facebook Portal Mini. it comes with a browsers from Facebook. I was able to make a phone call using duo.google.com then the next day.. I lost permission to the camera: it keeps asking me for permissions.
I think they have some kind of firewall that blocks unusual behaviors

I don't really know how to do those things... But it tried scanning my portal for open ports, no ip adp connection possible. And then, with usb c connected nothing happens with adb. It can't seem to see it !
I tried enabling hidden developpers options by pressing a lot everywhere in the settings, but no luck !
Alrighty, I've got an update for you guys. It seems like FB locked out that PDF trick sadly. However, I found out that if you restart your portal and hold all three buttons down, then plug in the USB-C, it appears as a device named "Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 (COM3)". Based on what I've seen on a few threads here, that's a utility for reflashing and backing up device firmware. I believe we may be able to do stuff with this.
I am looking into getting the FB Portal TV. If the party on the other end of the connection is using their smart phone or tablet, does the image I am seeing become altered from wide screen to a vertical image
or does the unit adapt to keep the screen filled without becoming distorted in some way?

Have you been able to find out anything more with the qualcomm loader? I have been playing with mine and unable to get a utility to recognize is. It would be nice to be able to get get the fw off it.
Has anyone made anymore progress with this yet?

I have not made any progress at all. I keep checking to see if anyone has done anything at all, but I think these devices are not too popular. Hard to find any information on them at all
So I was able to get fasboot access to my Facebook Portal+ (1st Gen).
If you plug in the power and hold down the vol down + power button. It will show the portal logo on the screen and on a black box it says "Please Reboot...". If you connect to the usb-c port then it looks like there is fastboot access to the device. It's definitely locked down, but it's a start.
I've been trying to figure out how to get adb / sideload access for a while now and this is as close as I've been able to get. I'll let you know if I find out more.
