Generally speaking, it's an upgrade:
S9N10RAM4 GB6 GBROM64 GB128 GB5GNoYesWarranty void if root?YesNoRefresh Rate60 Hz90 Hz/60 HzResolution1440 x 2960 p1080 x 2400 pCPU4x2.7 GHz & 4x1.8 GHz2x2.0 GHz & 6x1.7 GHzUSBType-C 3.1Type-C 2.0Battery3000 mAh4300 mAh
Keep in mind that the Samsung SX series are top-tier phones, unlike the OnePlus Nord series. For example:
SX series typically have more resistant screens (gorilla glass 5) and frames itself.
Samsung cameras are better on medium and low light environments: They have lower f values, which means they handle low light better.
USB 3.1 allows you to connect your phone to your display via HDMI connection.
SX series' CPUs are usually better.
Not sure if you use bixby, but OnePlus does not have a built-in tasker or voice assistant.

Samsung S9 or S9+?

Hello,
I am still considering whether to get the S9 or the S9+ .
I know the differences between them based on the spec.
I am okay with the S9 screen size , and do know regarding the difference in the battery capacity.
Is there any other difference that make S9+ the better phone?
Will I miss a lot of things by not having the dual lenses camera?
4GB vs 6GB make any noticeable difference?
Hope to get some feedback to help me make the pre order
Thank you
S9+ obviously lol.

Well....
Dual Camera with Dual OIS / Wide-angle: Super Speed Dual Pixel 12MP AF sensor (F1.5/F2.4), Telephoto: 12MP AF sensor (F2.4)
Better Picts
Memory: 6GB RAM
Faster Phone running multiple apps (should never Lag like 4gb)
Battery: 3,500mAh (500 more mah)
Longer Battery Life
Obvious higher resale when the next hot device comes out..
My Choice for sure I'm already cutting Loose N8.
My big question is if the Unlocked US version is Built to Utilize 600mhz and 4x4 mimo qam..That's what I need to know because I would definitely prefer an Unbranded device because the have higher resale value and of course the crapware Tmo adds to the device. I wish they would allow you/give you the option to turn off the Super annoying Tmo start screen and (Freaking Jingle) telling the World im on T-mobile...aggravating from my perspective.

I see friends with the S8 and think it looks so small compared to my S8+. Definitely getting the +. But, if you have small hands like my petite female friend, the normal size means a bit more sense.
Anyway how much of a photo enthusiast are you with your phone? I can't wait to have some telefoto action myself.
S9+ of course
The S9+ will definitely keep more background apps open. Twice the internal storage. Better battery life.

I have the same question, but even when the battery is bigger in the Plus variant, the screen also is, so I don't know if actually it makes a difference in terms of battery life. I like devices with big batteries, and I always avoid batteries below ~3500mAh.
I'm running an HTC U11+ right now and I'm really comfortable with the screen and the size, and before that I had a Pixel 2 XL, and this will be my first Samsung ever because they finally fixed some things that bothered me from past generation.
I don't care much about dual camera, I'm sure I will have enough with one because I'm kind of amateur, but still size is kind of a bummer; taking in mind are the same size as S8/S8+ and I have seen them in store many times, the normal version for me feels small, but the Plus version is a little bit too large for my taste. So I'm kind of confused.

Keep in mind that the 9 is almost the same size as the 8. You can always try it in store.
But as everyone else already said, the 9+ has more features, so more resale value.
I had an 8+ and IMO the price difference is well worth it even more now that you get more than just a larger screen.
Personally, I'm going with the + again.
s9+ sure
:good:
S9+ is the right choice.
I don't know. Specs aside, and understanding xda is a geeky site compared to mainstream, I might go with the S9 for pocket ability. I don't see the specs being much different really. I have an S8 and if I play with the S8+ at first I think too big then as I get used to it and pick up the S8 I think too small until I get used to it and repeat. You can easily get used to either. Before the S8 my phones tended to be the plus sizes and I now find the S8 to be a good size to both pocket and to type on. Really though I don't think you can go wrong either way.
s9+ on pre-order from samsung direct-will be delivered 1 week today. bit annoyed that they have not included any freebies
Definitely S9+. The camera is better S9+ compared to S9.
having the S8, i can't justify buying the S9, however since i always buy the new S, i went for the S9+ with more RAM, better camera and bigger battery tahts how i can justify the "upgrade"
Pre-ordered from Sammy the unlocked S9+ for a total of 587.24. Hopefully they will send us a freebie (those of us who preordered).
from S8 to S9+.......!!!!!
I tried the both device and for me, the choice is clear: s9!
I precise that for me the photo is the aspect that's the most important... but the s9+ is really really tooooooooooooo big... I found it ridiculous and hard to held.
I'm not a fan of the note versions though.
For the 4gb - 6 gb = nope, it's not visible! NO app use this amount of ram and even if you have plenty app opened it's really hard to tell the difference on a phone. When u let app open, usually u let 9 apps max and for that u never need more than 2,5 gb of ram perhaps 3...
For the battery, it's proved the difference is not that much (30 min 1 hour?)
For the tele, yeah, it's gimmick. You have a 2x zoom option (with less luminosity)... and that's all, nothing else. For that difference, I make one step before me with the normal module and I have the same result (really I tested earlier and the 2x zoom = 1 step)

its like you read my mind!!!! Exactly the same thought, the s9 was useless and not worth it.
I'm on T-Mobile's Jump on Demand. S9+ requires a $120 down payment. S9 doesn't. Seeing as I swap phones ever month or two it didn't make sense for me to throw $120 away. If they would have rolled the down payment into the monthly price I would have done s9+. That's what they did with the Note 8, V30, and iphone X. A little upset they didn't do that with the S9 series. So I went with the smaller s9 just do to that one reason.

Galaxy 9s+ now or wait for Note 9??

Using an old note 4.
2 new batteries and it still just conks out when it feels like it. Does the reboot loop until i plug it in...desided to give up the ghost and get a new phone.
I know the New note 9 will be available around end of Aug..but i wondered if i just bought a 9s+ would i see much of a difference?? Will there likely be a big jump in processing power and Ram...and would i actually notice? Thing is 9S+ is here now..plenty cases and extras out there etc...tempting..any suggestions?? Thxs
Note 9 is rumoured to have a 4000mah battery. I am not fully satisfied with the battery life of my s9+. The processing speed should be similar as they will use the same SOC. I suggest you to wait till note 9 announcement and then decide.

Here is the real question, would you rather have an S Series or a Note Series?
If you prefer the S Series then get the s9+ now. If you prefer the Note series I would wait.
I used to be a big Note fan but when they started making the S Series with curved glass I have stuck with them and skipped the note series.
AS the guy above me said, Memory and CPU / GPU are going to be the same ones as in the S9+ so you will not loose anything there.
So yeah, I was in the same dilemma recently and choose the S9+. The Note has a lot of features that I will never use them. Starting with the S-Pen.
I'd wait even if you decide on the s9+, the S9+ may drop in price once the Note9 comes out and the s9/s9+ isn't the "latest and greatest" anymore.
I bought note 8 and it is too big for me and too heavy. The battery was too small but the pen was fantastic. I decided to sell it for buy s9+ and I'm very happy. The battery isn't fantastic but allows you to get to the end of the day. I recommend you s9 + now, you save money and you have a great phone

As @vishnu8058 mentioned, Im too not so happy with the batterylife . Though its acceptable , i've experienced superior batterylife in several other flagships in recent times. Keeping that in mind alone, I would simply wait till August end if I were you.
..
There will be no big jump in processor or such as it would come with the same SD845/Exynos 9810 SoC, but an 8 GB RAM/512 GB storage- region specific Note 9 may show up that may not interest you. Rest deciding factor should be the size, S-pen usability, weight , your taste on samsung environment and ofcourse the price :fingers-crossed:
I did a similar jump but from Note 4 to S8+ last year, contemplating the same dilemma as to whether to wait for Note 8 or not. In the end, I had the Note 3 and Note 4 and with either I almost never used the pen, which is really the main selling point over the S series, so I went with the S8+ (with the S8+ and later the physical screen size difference is much less than it used to be between the S and Note series).
Heres the thing...
I lost my pen from the note 4 soon after i got it...and desided i wasnt going to replace it as i didnt need it. Thats how i feel about note 9. Im not interested about the pen. All im interested in is:
(Not in any order)
Storage
Ram
Chip speed/ gpu
Battery
Screen quality/size
Sound
This is really why i posted...perhaps i should have started out with this email...apologies for the waffle..lol

It's clear that you don't need a Note device, BUT still the jump in battery is something that I think many people would appreciate, BUT we need to remember what happened last time Samsung tried to put a decent battery size in a Note phone.
Size is another to keep in mind, because Note series are usually bigger, and trust me when I say that the S9+ is already a big phone; yes, is still manageable, but for me S9+ is in the limits of what you can handle or you can carry in your pocket without problems.
Price will also be another factor, because you will be paying a huge difference (~30%) just for an upgrade in battery, because you won't be using all those features that justify the price of the Note 9, and currently you can grab sweet deals with the S9+, and when the Note 9 comes out, price will slightly decrease as well.
Overall S9+ is a really nice phone and as long as you spend time setting it, you would get enough juice for a day.

All checked. Bruh if high batterytime matters to you thn it's not the GS9+.GN8 is the one I went back from s9+ aftr quite smtime <pen rarely useful to me> but I'm OK with it and excited to upgrade to GN9
Im genuinly tempted to go for the g9s+.
Reasons..
1. Its out now
2. Plenty reviews..seems pretty solid.
3. Been out long enough..plenty good cases / access.
4. Getting cheaper/better deals
5. Gs series seems to now be the flagship phone. Note series just fills in the gaps between iphone/competitors hardware release.
Wot else should be on this list?
Also do u think the upgraded hardware on the n9 with outperform the 9s+?? Is it a new chip or the same..as there will be an upgrade in ram to 8gb..surely thats going to make a huge difference??

I think the performance is going to be very similar, if not identical. There almost certainly won't be a hardware upgrade for the Note 9 (excepting the reported RAM increase), the chipset is likely to be the same as the S9 and S9+ (like the Note 8 vs S8/S8+ last year). It seems to be confirmed now that the design of Note 9 won't change much since the Note 8, just like the S9 and S9+ this year, so they should also all look almost the same.
The Galaxy S series have always been Samsung's flagship phone -- the Note series have been considered 'phablets' due to the size of the device, although the line got a little blurred with the 'plus' editions of the S series - S6 Edge+ (Note 5 was the same size), S7 Edge (the Note 7 was 0.2" larger), S8+ (the Note 8 was 0.1" larger) and S9+ (seems like the Note 9 will be 0.2" larger).
I think you need to decide between the following criteria (you've stated the pen isn't important to you so, so that's not on the list):
Price (S9+ will be cheaper, probably by quite a bit, than the Note 9 at launch and for some time after). This is probably going to be the single biggest difference between the two.
Battery (Note 9 is suggested to have a 4000mAh battery vs the 3500mAh on the S9+).
RAM (I don't think the 8GB is going to make a any noticeable difference over 6GB in normal day-to-day use, and bear in mind more RAM means a little bit more power usage - haven't got any hard numbers about that, mind, so I don't know actual practicalities on it).
Storage (It seems the Note 9 may have a 512GB version on top of the others, though it will be pricey).
I am perhaps biased given I have the S9+, but personally I would've gone for the S9+ and gotten the phone now rather than wait - but that's me
Either will be a great choice, and neither will be a mistake - particularly coming from a Note 4.

Not in terms of specs or anything. All comes down to the deal, and buying an operator-locked phone obviously requires you to unlock if you want to switch operator (something they are obliged to do by law on request, so it's not an issue, just a consideration to make). Usually you end up paying more for the phone over the term of the contract under which you purchase it, but obviously the upside is you pay monthly until the end of the contract and don't have to splurge out the money up front.
I got the galaxy s9+ from samsung store 4 days back and I am absolutely loving it. Got a total discount of 14k INR which is good in my opinion. The battery is hit or miss but aparat from that I am loving every bit of it.
I feel the Note is too large to carry around and with bigger screen size + additional note functions its going to suck the 4000mah battery at same rate as galaxy s9+

Fun fact : For the same type of RAM, more RAM consumes more power negligibly in comparison to less RAM of the same type. In fact , more RAM variant of the phone takes overall less power than a lesser RAM variant of the same phone if the user is quite a multitasker as more RAM helps in multitasking by keeping more apps & tasks opened giving less stress to the CPU as it doesn't have to work on re-opening them. :fingers-crossed:

Note20 Hype

Who's already thinking about upgrading their phone, according to the current informations we have about the future Note? And which phone do you want to replace it with?
I'll start: I'm a big fan of the Note series since the first one (I don't use the Spen that much, but I find the overall design and specs to be quite nice, I prefer it over the S series). I usually skip one iteration because I find on one year they add features, and the next year they fix some of the previous year's mistakes. I even had the Note7... not for long So now, even it it still rocks, I'm thinking about replacing my Note9 with a Note20, for the cameras, the display, and all that stuff. Yes I'm totally into the consumer's profile, paying the full bill for a "minor" upgrade, but I enjoy it
What about you guys?
I'm hyped!
Note 10+ here, but I got the upgrade plan or whatever through Samsung with every intention of getting this year's model.
My biggest excitement? 120Hz screen and the new colors. Improved camera as well. I'm hopeful the battery life will remain similar despite the increase in refresh rate.
I'm actually trying to find out reasons to NOT get the Note 20 Ultra and I'm not finding many so far which is a good thing.

Big bump, but the array looks way better than the S20 Ultra.
Oh Im getting it for sure, the new copper color.
Will be keeping my note 10 plus though and still even use my copper note 9 once in awhile lol.
On an S8 and have been putting off a new phone because every time I get hyped I read about what the NEXT one is going to have, most recently skipped the S20 because the 120hz doesn't work on the highest resolution, but I think the Note 20 Ultra will finally be what I drop money on. As long as I don't hear rumors of the S21 folding my laundry...
Sent from my SM-G950U using XDA Labs
I really want to get this phone. But I gotta say I'm a little disappointed with the news being reported today that Samsung is sticking with the Exynos 990 (note the rumored Exynos 992) again for international models, while the US, Japan, China, etc get the Snapdragon 865+. There was already about a 20% difference in power between the Exynos 990 and the regular Snapdragon 865 with the S20 models, now that gap will likely be larger.
Don't get me wrong, I think I will still get the Note 20 Ultra as I'm a huge fan of the Note series and I don't think I can wait another year to upgrade from my Note 8. I just wish I wasn't going to get an inferior processor for the same high price as others are paying for the Snapdragon variant.
I'd be interested to hear what others here think about this.

Likely to keep happening as people push for better cameras.
I use a case, so it won't bother me much at all.
I also hope there will be some sort of pre-purchase offer, for example a refund if you send your old device back maybe, like they did for the Note9.

the ONLY reason whoould be that Samsung will again charge us the same money for Exynos chipset eventhough South Korea, China, US and Canada will get Snapdragon 865+ which would be with 30% more powerful and more power efficient.
This means approx. 3hrs SoT more for the Snapdragon 865+ ..
And Samsung it makes it even more difficult if we will buy Snapdragon 865+ note 20 Ultra from US or somewhere else, because in EU they are not supporting warranty for the Snapdragon devices..and they neither do service where customer pays money because they don;t have the spare parts..which is awful..

I feel the same. But I'm also quite conflicted on this for another reason.
Snapdragon phones are locked down, usually they can’t be rooted, and users can’t flash custom recoveries/ROMs.
There are of course exceptions to this but the Exynos variants are definitely better for development purposes.
Now for the first 2 years that probably won't bother me as the stock software would be fine. But once Samsung no longer provides OS updates it's really nice to be able to run custom ROMs.
If only we could get an Exynos device with comparable performance to Snapdragon.

Exynos 992 on 6nm or 5nm with arm x78 architecture is the best soution as of now for Note 20 Utra
If Samsung does a really strong trade in offer (I have a Note 9) to get the price reasonable, and ideally a throw in offer like the new ear buds, I'm in. Multiple Note owner (had the Note 4, 7 and 9) and really looking forward to a camera with a real zoom and better battery life. Looks like a winner!

I read somewhere the 3 colors for the Ultra will be that new copper color, then black and white.
One with Exynos 990 & the other one with SD865+, Samsung will STILL find them to be equally performing..
And a lot will believe it too.
I went from a Note 10+ to a Oppo Find X2 Pro instead of waiting for the Note 20 series, simply for the fact that every leak was pointing to European users being stuck with a Exynos 990 & I don't regret my decision at all, Samsung themselves are so blind they that continue to argue that the Exynos 990 is on the same level as the Snapdragon 865/+, it's ridiculous and from a consumer point of view, unacceptable, we're paying the same premium price but for a worse equipped device.
Many argue that it's only noticeable in benchmarks or on paper etc. But it isn't, it affects camera performance, camera quality, gaming performance, thermal performance, app fluidity, all the important parts of a smartphone experience, Snapdragon is far far ahead.
Sorry for the rant but it's just frustrating, hopefully one day Samsung will listen, in the meantime I'll enjoy my Snapdragon equipped Oppo :good:

" Where to go? "

I changed to the V30+ from my Droid Turbo after ChazzMatt had a thought where he would go to after the Droid Turbo got old. The V30 was a great choice even we knew LG is real crap with system updates.
I have the V30+ almost for two years and had several thought to change it in the last half a year. I'm on rooted stock oreo. I'm not a heavy user, but battery time is getting on my nerves by now.
I did all that is possible with the stock system. I see that some has 5-6hrs os SOT with limiting frequencies, using the lowest light settings all day, and who knows what other mods with cutting functions.
Nope, I don't make compromises. I did not buy a premium phone to cut back frequencies, to try to read the low light screen in bright sun... I did all the optimal settings, but screen time is around 3hrs in a day use.
Deepsleep was always a high consumer. 3-4% per hr with all the non-used apps turned off. My Mi5 does this with 0.3%, and my DroidTrubo also does that.
So my question where to go from the V30+?
I've been looking the LG V50 for quite a while, but my fear is, that staying on the LG-train means the same ****ty system updates, badly optimized battery management... and absolutely no developer background, no root.
I'm fine with the factory system as I need all cameras, so probably would survive that I can not root.
I went all other possibilities, and there is no other choice but the Samsung S10+, if you need water resistance and sturdiness. Everything votes for the Samsung, but build quality.
Same cameras, more RAM, same battery, smaller size... can be rooted, has decent developer background.
I had Samsung before and swore not to get one again. But there is no other choice.
What do you think everybody? @ChazzMatt, I really would like to know your thoughts also...
Thanks for all the useful comments!

I'm afraid I am going to have give up root to keep top tier specs (headset jack, Qi wireless charging, QHD 1440p display).
If not LG V50, then yes Galaxy S10 (6.1") or S10+ (6.4"). Here are specs comparing all three phones. I'm not a Samsung fan either, but I'll consider them because that series still had headset jack. (The "all three" comparisons only show up on computer screen, not app screen.)
Right now LG is on some strange LSD trip, where they are reverting back to 1080p, using mid-range Snapdragon, and trying to force us to use multiple displays.
I have a mint LG V35 ready for my wife to use, but she isn't rooted anyway. No notch, 6GB RAM, basically a V40 in a V30 case. THAT was how LG should have continued.

When you decide to move on to another phone, please let us know.
I'll be right behind you.
Sony just announced a new flagship that looks interesting. It has most of the same features we loved in the V30, more memory, and the latest processor. Software support couldn't be worse than LG. Seriously, except for the anemic battery, my wife's XZ2c has been great. It was purchased from BHPhoto the same day as my V30S and has received regular updates including A10 months ago.

1080p. I'm not downgrading. All my phones since 2014 have had 1440p. Why can't they give me QHD 1440p AND headset jack?
But the rest of the specs sound fantastic.

Like the 2019 Galaxy S10 (6.1")/S10+ (6.4") -- both of which have QHD 1440p, Qi wireless charging, IP68 and headset jack. Plus stereo speakers. The S10+ has a 4100 mAh battery.

If Samsung adds headset jack back for 2021 and later, I'll be OK.
Qi wireless charging, QHD 1440p, even headset jack are "lines in the sand" for me I will not cross (do without). My 2014 Moto Quark (Droid Turbo/Moto Maxx/Moto Turbo) had all three. When I found the V30 in 2017 during a year long search to replace my phone, those were the attributes a new phone for me and my wife needed.
At the time only Samsung and LG were still doing Qi wireless charging. Even Google had given it up, even though they pioneered it with their Nexus phones (20012 Nexus 4, 2013 Nexus 5, 2014 Nexus 6). But then Apple started doing Qi wireless charging and Google then added it back because their Pixel team worships Apple. If Google had kept it the whole time, they would have gotten credit for being the trend setter.

Yeah Snapdragon S10 is still a good option and ticks most of the boxes
Sadly we've only the Exynos variant of s10 here

I agree with your lines in the sand except for the 1440p, that doesn't matter to me. My only question is whether the S10 or the V50 are boot unlockable?

I haven't kept up so much with the Samsung variants, but as far as I know for the LG V50 only the Europe variant (LMV500EM) has true bootloader unlock through the official LG unlock code. Our V30 LOS dev also is dev for V40 and V50 and he owns one. And by "true", I mean permanent. There's a temp root method for other V50 variants, but it's lost every time you reboot. The last time I looked on eBay for V50, I couldn't find any Europe variants, only "carrier unlocked" Sprint variant. (Hint for others: if the eBay listing says "unlocked" they are usually talking about SIM card unlock/network unlock, not bootloader unlock.)
However, while I have bought "international" phones in the past, I'm wary right now with the coming U.S. carrier VoLTE lockdown. By 2022 on AT&T I'll need a phone/firmware that gives me AT&T VoLTE. Verizon and T-mobile users will need it by the end of this year. That topic discussed here:
All U.S. V30/V3O+/V30S will need stock firmware, not LOS-based custom ROMs. When?

Some V50 have temp root, you could check about it on v50 xda
S10 exynos has good development, not sure about the snapdragon variant though
Best thing to do would be to visit the xda sub-forum for each device and see how everything is

Yeah, this part:
By virtue of being a “temp root” method, root access will be lost as soon as you reboot your phone. Moreover, Android Verified Boot 2.0 may kick in and brick your phone if you try to make permanent changes to protected partitions such as boot, system, and vendor without an unlocked bootloader. That being said, the exploit is currently available in its compiled form, while the developer will soon release the source code. The executable should be invoked from a regular ADB shell or a terminal emulator, and it should show the following message after successful privilege escalation.

On the old Motorola Droid Turbo, towards the end of development after Motorola tried to patch the Sunshine exploit, a one-time temp root was necessary for Sunshine to run to unlock the bootloader. But this is different. It's a continual cycle of "temp root", which you have to implement every time you reboot the phone.
For the S10/S10+ only the Exynos and Hong Kong Snapdragon variants can be bootloader unlocked and rooted, to my knowledge. For Hong Kong, it uses Snapdragon and Samsung puts easy bootloader unlock switch like with older T-mobile phones. But U.S. Snapdragon variants are hard locked down due to carrier demands. Exynos chips are used in other parts of the world and have bootloader unlock.
This thread claims you can get a U.S. S10+ bootloader unlocked and with TWRP installed from Chinese hacker.

XDA article from this weekend indicates that Snapdragon s10 can be bootloader unlocked.

Interesting. But $150?
Magisk Hide is still letting SafetyNet pass, so things like Google Pay work without issue. I can (and have) installed Magisk modules without any issues, and now I’ve got the experience I wanted, with full US compatibility and a proper warranty.
Interestingly, this isn’t even an exploit. The root process makes use of internal Samsung tools.
It’s also not free. I paid quite a bit to unlock my phone. Not $550-$700-worth, but still a good chunk of change. But for me, it was worth it. Now my phone is my phone, and since Samsung has a bootloader unlockable variant that uses the same Snapdragon 865+, I have access to plenty of development work. Again, though, it’s not free, and you’ll be paying up to $150 to get a bootloader unlock. Compatibility is also currently limited to the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S20, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy Note 20 series.
If, for whatever reason, you’re interested in this, I’ve put together a super simple Android app that answers a lot of questions about the process, and then allows you to request your own unlock. Check it out on XDA Labs. The app itself is free, so there’s no investment for investigation besides your time. You can proceed if you are still comfortable.

Moving on from the V30

I've had my V30 for 3 years now. Came to it from a Turbo that served me well for years too. The 30 has and still works awesome thanks to all the help from xda gurus.
I enjoy the freedoms of having an unlocked and rooted phone. I was wondering what a good upgrade would be? What are you all moving on to from the V30?
Thanks for any advice.
I have rooted Galaxy Note 9, myself.
I moved on to the Galaxy S10+ but I also gave up rooting. While I fully support the desire to root so you can truly own your device, I find it's getting harder and harder to get there. That said, I have not missed rooting either... I don't feel I'm missing anything by not being able to root this phone.
I chose the S10 because, originally, it was rootable (requires older bootloader)... and it kept most of the great features of the V30 (big battery, headphone jack, high-res screen, similar size, etc).
Thanks for the replies! I absolutely love having a head phone jack haha. All my cars are older and have an auxiliary input jack instead of Bluetooth lol
I'm in this situation too. While my V30 still meets my needs, it's already about five years old. I'm also the last one on our Verizon account - everyone else has been moved to T-Mobile.
I've been looking at the Sony Xperia 1 IV or maybe the previous version the Xperia 1 III. From what I understand they have a headphone jack, stereo speakers, SD card slot, and they're rootable. Their native screen resolution is 1644x3840, although according to GSMArena in normally runs at 1096x2560.
My lack of experience with Sony cell phones is a big part of whats holding me back. Another thing is since T-Mobile doesn't currently carry Sony phones, I lose out on any carrier incentives for the new line.
EDIT - I forgot to mention it also appears to not have a notch or hole-punch for the front camera.

Remember, you can also get a BT adapter for the car. I had this on my older previous car as well. I had one like this, but not this exact brand/model: https://smile.amazon.com/BK01-Bluetooth-Hands-Free-Wireless-Streaming/dp/B01MSUWCZ0
@hitokage004 I had looked at the Sony phones too, but they weren't available in the USA, cost a lot more, and I wasn't sure they work work on USA frequencies. They seem like great devices, but the limited matches on frequencies made it pointless IMO for the USA market. For example, here is the "Sony Xperia 1 IV" on TMo: https://www.frequencycheck.com/carr...04-so-51c-sony-pdx-223/t-mobile-united-states - you can see that LTE is only supported on 2/5 bands.
So, just be careful with that. And don't take my word on it, or that one website either...
@schwinn8 - There is a US model. You have to make sure that's what the seller really has, and unfortunately there are many that don't. That's one of the issues I've seen mentioned over on the XDA forums for the Xperia, so it's one of the things I know to watch out for if I do start actively pursuing one.
I believe there is supposed to be a variant that has 256GB of storage and is a bit cheaper. The international version is available that way, but I haven't confirmed if the US version does - only the 512GB is shown on the Sony US website.
The Xperia 1 III is available on Sony's site, with 256GB storage, at about $900. Then there are the Xperia 5 III and IV, that have a lower screen resolution, etc. The one I'm definitely not considering is Xperia PRO line - between the price and lack of wireless charging.

Yeah, I had looked at the III at one point, but for $900 it's silly money, IMO. I got my S10+ for $300 and that was about a year ago.
Good to know there may be a US model. I wonder if it's something like the LG/Samsung phones where you can just flash over to the right setup that you need, and get the frequencies you want. Again, this would be fine, but not at $900...
There's still the challenge of getting a US carrier to activate it. Most of the time they look at the IMEI and say yes/no, even if it is converted via the ROM. I ran into this with the V30 repeatedly (I was on a VZ MVNO, but the IMEI was something else).
I got a Samsung S20 FE 5G (after some time with Xiaomi/Redmi phones which I definitely don't recommend).
The plus point is that it still has MicroSD card slot. Missing the convenience of the headphone jack but I got a cheap usb dac which has good sound quality.
Unlocking it outside of EU is tough/paid so I am using it with BL locked stock rom (debloated): https://github.com/aakashverma7/Samsung-Debloat/blob/main/[DEBLOAT}Samsung S-Series.txt
It seems that time has finally caught up with my V30+, seeing numerous daily connection drops ( just for a second) at home. Also , file transfers using usb flakes out in mid stream. Yeah, I have rooted Galaxy Note 9, my wife and elderly mother now have 64GB LG V35 (most direct upgrade from 64GB V30), my brother in law now has Galaxy S10+ and my sister is now getting Galaxy 20+ (or something like that).
We all had LG V30/V30+.
All replacement phones still have headset jacks, except for my sister's.
After using this S20 for a week now, I'm kind of liking it overall. Still need to debloat stuff, but it is manageable, I have wifi6 & 5G & sdcard , use a dongle for headphones. Guess my ol V30+ was telling me it was time...
My V30+ is about ready to call ir quits
Constantly overheats
Fingerprint scanner doesn't work
Main camera seems to be stuck in a shallow focus range and I have to wack it to get it working.
Was also looking at the sony line but they are expensive
A next option was the Poco X3 Pro... Only negative is the lcd screen in my opinion.
@tech_infinity why dont u recommend xiaomi/redmi? Isn't poco related to them?

All of that could be due to a bloated battery. When my original one bloated, the phone was warmer and the power button (which is where the fingerprint scanner is) wouldn't work unless I really pressed hard. I would take off your case and see if the back of the phone is bulging. If so, you can replace the battery with a new one from Amazon for less than $15. Even if you still think that you're ready to move on to another phone, you might still care to make the small investment to have a usable spare phone and media player.

Perhaps, when the battery was replaced, a few things weren't put back together as well as possible (the power/scanner button has a finicky connection that can come loose, I found out) or dust was introduced (perhaps why the camera focus is sometimes off). I dunno, but you might want take it apart again and make sure that all contacts, sensors and lenses are clean. If that doesn't do it, you might try wiping and clean flashing the phone. I'm just throwing ideas out if you'd prefer to try to fix it. I understand not wanting to bother and just upgrading, too.

I've moved to the Xiaomi 12 Global version. It is very good, but I really miss the LG, the back button and maxed out screen-to-phone size. I wish they were still making phones.
