Terrific stuff here. A friend just had his 808 rebuilt. (Then he bought a Samsung! Who would-a-thunk-it?) In other comparisons like this I notice the Sony tends to bring some yellow or off-white tone to the photos. What had the colors that are closer to the actual?

Colors is not an issue here, they could be easily corrected in RAW or raster editor.
But resolution is a disappointment. I've expected at least 20% advance over Nokia.

Yah. Got yah.

There is a big mistake. For Nokia 808 there exists a number of mods, one is even made by a russian hacker Osenok, one of many that let you shoot in full resolution with 100% jpeg quality.
Having seen the examples and comparisons, even the xiaomi / samsung with 108mp sensors couldn't resolve more details than the more-than-10-year-old Nokia 808.
And the Pro-i with its 12mp is no resolution beast in any place. Any flagship with a 48/50/64/108mp sensor would beat it in daylight with no sweat.
Walking on the wild side: upping the Nokia 808 to full 41MP status?
Following an interesting Twitter exchange, and in light of the paucity of new updates coming out for the Nokia 808 PureView, I'm more inclined to give publicity to what are normally classed as 'hacks', breaking through the usual Symbian OS safeguards in order to achieve extra functionality. In...

Pixel quality wise Pro-i easily excels all these artificially inflated flagships, with fake mpixels and aquarel processing with artifacts.

Yes agree. We get to choose our flavor of digital rendering by phone manufacturer. No different than Kodachrome, Extachrome, and Fuji film renderings in the day.

[Q] Better photo quality after update

Hey guys,
I just wanted to know if the update improved the Cameras photo quality?
I've just read alot of negative remarks towards the initial camera, and was curious if they were fixed. Such as the white-balance
Thanks
Personally I find the camera quality (before and after update) to be below average. Compared to friends' phones (iPhone, Samsung Galaxy etc) the images from the Lumia 800 are inferior in terms of sharpness, colour balance etc... that's my only gripe now... the rest of the device is v good now that .12070 is installed.

I have to contradict this to an extent, With good and correct lighting the Lumia can easily out perform than most phones on the market, However with medium to low lighting conditions it does struggle immensely. I could link you to a 720p video i recorded outside in broad daylight with my Lumia the quality is magnificent. I think being 8MP it performs as it should and exceeds average with the correct lighting.
My gripe is that when recording video the microphone records too much noise and lacks richness, It needs what the HTC Titan has which is by far better and isn't far behind professional quality.
The camera itself is good, but the software/drivers are not good at all.
Please wait until the camera update comes out which should improve the camera quality a lot. With proper software this phone can take really good pictures.
Still pictures have lots of noise and stretched pixels and artifects. However on the other hand I found the HD video quality to be very very good.
With the promised camera software update this will likely improve a lot.
The auto white-balance behaviour has been much improved. However I still rely on manual settings for best results.

Question; wasnt the "promised camera update" part of 12070 or is there another update announced in the works?
---------- Post added at 01:18 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:16 PM ----------
Even after the update, I think I still got better pics with my cheapo HD7 and when I was on Android, the Samsung Vibrant..
Glad that some of the white balance was taken care of, but still lackluster IMO

No this update did not include camera improvements as far as I know, only a whitebalance correction maybe… nothing major on the camera department, but this has said to be part of a next firmware update. The battery fix was being prioritized (quite logical) and hence pushed out early without an upgrade to the camera software.

THAT sounds promising!! Hope it's soon..
Here's a unprocessed (default settings) photo I took straight from the camera. It has been cropped some though (about 1000px width) There's quite a bit of detail in the photo. And here you see how it handles harsch lightning conditions.

Nice pic.
I agree that given a strong source of light from any part of the frame, the Lumia camera with the update stands well on its own. Problem is low light levels it underperforms against even a cheap HD7. This is also unedited, taken just last Sunday when my nephew turned Eagle in BSA. Shot in a fluorescent room with no other lighting.
No burn mark anymore thank God or other obvious flaws, but still nothing spectacular..

*Post your pictures taken with the Xperia Z3 Compact*

Hey guys, many of us have received this great device already, now it's time to show how great (or not so great) pictures this device can make!
It could also help other people make their choice whether to buy it or not.
Please do not upload the image on XDA itself, but rather use a site like imgur, tinypic, imageshack, imagevenue to upload your pictures.
When you upload the images on XDA itself we won't be able to see the image in it's full glory, because the images are being compressed, hence losing their quality.
Thank you.

Ok so I went out to take some pictures on one of the last few warm and sunny days of this year:
I first made some macro shots in the garden (I used a macro lens)

I forgot 2 pictures that I made with backgrounddefocus:
As far as the camera goes... is it as good as it should be with that high a resolution? Probably not. Is it better than most smartphones? Yes. Is it the best? Probably not, but it will definitely do the job for any of the poor souls (like myself) coming from a Moto X.
Not bad at night, although noise reduction is crazily heavy-handed, as I've come to expect from Sony.

Strangely the bokeh effect in those pictures makes it looks as if the picture is sunken into my monitor, kind of like a 3D effect.
I've not had that effect so strongly with other bokehs. :cyclops:

Not bad at all (I shudder to think what pic the Moto X would have produced haha). What settings did you use for that shot? Auto? Manual? 8MP? 15 or 20MP?

IIRC, auto at 8MP.
Honestly, though, Sony really needs to get a grip on their JPEG processing and/or allow RAW output. I don't question that this is among the best sensors in a mobile phone out there, but I miss Nokia's much better processing algorithms.

I'm not a photo expert or anything AT ALL!
But that's the complaint I've been hearing most of the time. Sony is one of the leaders when it comes to DSLR's and Compact camera's, but yet their Android software is lacking some things.

Their JPEG processing for their Alpha cameras isn't too good, either, which was just one more reason for me to just shoot in RAW when I had a NEX.
They are not artistic shots, but I found it after my iPhone session. For me looks pretty good as taken by phone camera.

I'm pretty sure that I've read every review and comparison review of the Z3 camera. My conclusion is that the Z3c has the best camera for a phone it's size (except iPhone 6 which probably edges it out slightly). Expanding the comparison to larger phones, the Z3 camera is comparable to the S5, which has a very well reviewed camera. Each has strengths and weaknesses but end up as a tie overall. For someone who is very into photography though, the Z3 does offer more control, if desired, than the S5, so the photographer will likely prefer the Z3.
That's my summary from having looked at tons of reviews and comparisons and is consistent with the findings of dxomark: http://www.dxomark.com/Mobiles/Sony-Xperia-Z3-New-Sony-flagship-Smartphone-tested
With that said, this comparison review does a good job of showing the weaknesses of the Z3 vs the best the Windows Phone has to offer.
http://allaboutwindowsphone.com/features/item/20150_Camera_head_to_head_Lumia_9301.php
The DxoMark scores for the phone cameras are actually quite close, still with the edge to the Z3 overall though. The Lumia video abilities really drop their combined score though.
As long as you're expectations are reasonable (this is still a phone not a DSLR) I think you'll be happy with the Z3c, I have been so far. It's among the best cameras currently available in a phone
Wow. I need more photos sample and reviews. Please!!!

This device is going to be released in Singapore tomorrow. Can't wait! They have live sets in the store. Played around with the UI. Dpi seems to be at 320. Everything seems bigger. Things seems quite snappy on one but another is lagging even when navigating thru the interface.. Having mixed feeling about this monster....

Regardless, I think I am still going to take the plunge. Love device from sony though most of the time was disappointed by the performance.. Something keeps drawing me back to them.. I know it's conflicting but that's really how I feel. Probably getting it today. The white one. The black looks really plasticky. Stay tune for a short review once I get it today. Hopefully.

I hope that was a really early pre-production unit because that's not very promising for all the hype they pumped at the event.
The bench one isn't focused properly.
The night time cityscape has a ton of noise and poor focus.

One thing I noticed is that the black strip's edge was really sharp and odd looking.

Looks pretty good to me. I don't think it will be anywhere near S6 though. The selfie camera on S6 Edge is unreal. It makes you look better than you actually look in real life which I'm assuming is part software too lol.

Compared to the crap that other Nexus devices shot these look quite good. Are they Note 5 quality? No. I don't think they are bad though in the slightest.

These photos are great. For the bench photo, it was simply focused on the grass instead which is as easy as touching the screen to change focus.

haha that's exactly what my wife kept saying about the G4, the selfie camera on the G4 imo is better than the Moto X Pure and the OPT.
I thought the pictures above were fine.
As long as it's better than the G4 like some reviewers have mentioned I'll be happy
I'm looking at the pictures on my iMac at work and I have the brightness pumped up just to see how good they are... I must say, I'm pretty impressed! I'm not sure what kind of quality you guys are looking for but I suggest you go buy a camera at this point. It's a SMARTPHONE first then somewhere down the line it's a Camera as well. Let's not confuse what we're investing our hard earned money into.
many of the photos that are going to be posted by Googlers will have filters applied im assuming (all stuff that can be done right in the photos app or snapseed). but for point and shoot, i think they are pretty impressive for the stock nexus camera app which usually isn't up to par.

Best pictures quality RDN4 vs LG G5

Good morning to everyone. As I wrote yesterday, I prepared a mini photo quality comparison between rdn4 and LG G5.
Unfortunately I could not get out a lot of photos (I was in-laws in the village?))
But I was able to take off several mainly nearby.
I can say that many times the result surprised me!
Really worthy rdn4 standing against device wearing of the best cameras of 2016 !! (LG G5)
At the end I will do and link from google drive folder with the photos in their original quality.
I expect comments?)

Can you upload the images directly? They look like they've been compressed, especially since it went through whatever editing software to write the models in.
LG G5 is classes above the Redmi series, they are not even comparable. Perhaps the real comparison would be between LG G5 and Xiaomi Mi5.
RN4 is a good phone indeed but it falls into the mid-range class.

Thanks for the great comparison! It really highlights the real world camera performance difference in less than ideal (mostly low light, which the G5 is well equipped to handle) conditions. The Redmi 4 does well for its price, but it really is miles behind in terms of detail (extremely soft photos), its white balance is off but at least noise is kept to acceptable levels. It's camera algorithms are surprisingly mature, showing less oversharpening and fringing than the G5 and that considering it had to work a lot harder trying to retain detail with that poor sensor and lens. Can you do a follow-up review in good light?
Looks like The G5 has a better camera. Bad news :/
I have a Redmi Note 4 and the camera is decent, not not very good.
In low light condition it is even worst...
All the Redmi pictures have a horrible yellow tint. Plus the lack of OIS makes the pictures blurry - especially the one with the potted plant
