Question FP efficiency varies with apps - Google Pixel 6

Anyone notice that with various apps (eTrade, Bitwarden, Authy) that have biometric log in the FP reader seemingly works better than it does when unlocking the phone? If that is in fact true then the underlying problem and solution would be software related and correctable.

My OP8 was exactly the same way. FP scanner was hit or miss unlocking the phone but almost 100% unlocking apps. I find there to be virtually no difference between the FP scanner on my OP8 and my Pixel 6.

Totally Agree. The FP reader works much more reliably for unlocking an app than it does when unlocking the phone. It is also picky about dry skin. A little humidity on my fingertips improves the chances the phone will unlock.

After adding the screen protector, the FPR becomes definitely useless

Fingerprint speed compared to other modern flagships?

Hi,
I am currently looking to buy Honor 10, however, after reading some reviews and comments on the internet regarding the slowness and unresponsiveness of the fp scanner, I am really hesitant to.
May I know opinions on anyone already using the Honor 10 regarding the fp speed/reliability compared to iphone 7, oneplus 5 etc.?
it's bad compared to regular FP in other Huawei models, when it works it's fine, but it doesn't work always, though face unlock in good lightning conditions it's superfast, not very usable in dark (obviously)
though compared to other brands even this is still decent FP

Can you have a comparison with other brands as well, for example iphone 6s, samsung s7, oneplus 3 etc.
No problem after the first update.
And it's important how the fingerprint is registered.
One finger is recognized everytime on first try. An other finger ist working in 90% of the time.
I came from a Honor 8, and this brand new Honor 10 is a BIG Disappointment. Doesn't work fast, sometimes only recognize the fingerprint at the 3rd or 4th try...
Actually it's horrible... It takes severel times to detect the finger print (can compare to my Mate 8 and the Honor 6x).
But the face unlock is surprisingly good, even in low light and if you not hold your phone perpendicular to your face
The fingerprint reader is embarrassingly bad and I really hope they can improve it with a firmware update.
Thankfully, as mentioned, face unlock works really well.
it's really a shame then would have been perfect if they just used the normal fingerprint technology. I'm still holding out of buying it until I can try it in shop but they don't have stock for demo yet.
Same experience here - FP reader is slow and inconsistent, however face unlock works so well that I just use this and am very happy with it.
It's a different type of fingerprint scanner on the Honor 10. Its under the bezzel of the display and works with pressure. A slightly unfair comparison to other flagships here. In my opinion the fingerprint scanner placement isn't useful. Face unlock is faster.
I agree what other said. The fingerprint sensor just isn't as responsive as other conventional fingerprint sensors. I guess that is the trade off on some usability for style (under-glass sensor). There is no lowered platform in this phone. And no fingerprint sensor at the back ties in nicely with the cool phantom colors of the back cover.
Face unlock is faster but less secure as it is not true 3d face unlock technology like Iphone X or the Mi 8. I personally still go with fingerprint instead of face unlock.
I find the fingerprint sensor to be pretty fast although you do have to have to put pressure on it. What is more disappointing is when you want to use it for off screen navigation swiping it from left to right or right to left is supposed to bring up recent tasks but it only works about 50% of the time. I have put the on screen navigation back but it's a shame because it uses up screen space.
Fp is lame!! Use face unlock lmao

I agree. The unresponsive fingerprint for navigation even after the update is what makes me want to return the Honor 10 and get the P20. I want to use the off-screen navigation but same experience, it's unresponsive and works only half the time. P20 doesn't have this problem whatsoever.
They wanted full underscreen scanner.
Drawbacks. As everyone have noticed, ridiculous sensitivity issue.
Kinda hoped they just use back normal scanner, although it would feel different than glass, it functions better.
Mine works pretty well, i have no problems with unlocking or navigation. The only problem is the recent apps gesture, because of the screen protector it dosent work all the time from the first try.
Bought this phone last week...yeah it's a little bit slower than other flagship phones but i never had a problem with my fp recognition, it always works pretty good and doesn't need that much pressure. Though i have to admit i prefer the face unlock, it's faster, more convenient and i can use it while driving.

True, unlocking and navigation works fine. Same with me that recent apps gesture works only 50% of the time and that's a bit frustrating to me :/
I dont want to remove the screen protector, i bet it will work flawless after. We have to swipe full FP and the protector kinda prevents us to do that.
As almost evryone said it's not the fastest on earth but it kinda works and do the job, even if sometimes I have to try 3 times before unlocking.
I first tried the face unlock but sometimes I just want to take a look at the notifications without unlocking my phone so I de-activated it and the more i am using the FP the better it seems to work (or maybe I'm just getting used to it). Also I use the FP to navigate in the UI and love it for the moment even if the recent apps is sometimes hard to get.

Face Unlock...Fast, but...

Face Unlock is really quick, but noticed it doesnt work in the dark...lol..., so much for fake 3D mapping., but than again, no notch!!!!
I don't get the appeal of face unlock when fingerprint exists... It unlocks so fast, I cannot even see my notifications.
I actually prefer using Smart-UnLock, with a BT Device. Almost like a 2FA..., but the fingerprint sensor location is really in a bad place. The Phone is quite TALL, and the sensor is place too high, and I find myself needing to search for it. and its also off-centered as well. BUT still a great device, its not perfect, but which device is?

my discovery about tempered glass screenshields and fp issue

... Is, that it is ok when they have the pattern of dots deployed squarely
Or even the ones with slight damage on fp reader
These dots and noises are recorded along with your fingerprint
BUT...
All the glasses actually MOVE a bit around so it generates another combination with fp scanner and the software is all the time doing its best to understand what's going on - if it has to learn more details about your fp or if it is seeing a false finger
Edit: I am still suspicious about upper suggestion because of the cryptic "learning" function of the fp sw.
Is that part closed source or could someone explain its working principles?

In theory: The sensor is able to register "new" areas of the fingerprint every time there's a positive authentication with a small unknown area.
In practice: The sensor registers these new areas, but it's temporary, you can check this in a simple way: Unlock the device many times and constantly, then wait a long time and try to unlock it with the same finger again, it's very likely that this unlock is slower than the previous ones.
(This only happens in 6T and 7, in the rest of devices with FOD OnePlus is using a "new generation" sensor which is much faster, accurate and reliable)
The models generated by the fingerprint sensor andthe "critical" code executed during the unlocking process are stored inside the TrustZone of the processor and nobody outside OnePlus or Qualcomm can access it (Using an analogy: it's an armored bunker that can only be opened from the inside), so it's almost impossible to see the code and know exactly how does it work.

Thanks for good information.
So the only way to reverse engineer it is by collecting different experiences with it.
Anyway, as I believe your suggestion about it being hardcoded, I am dumping the use of this hardware piece generally, device independently. For privacy reasons. So I have no issues anymore
Thanks

Question No Face unlock?!

Hey
Did not realize the P6's didn't have Face unlock
Yes, this is a HUGE disappointment but I'm hopeful for it's return, along side the fingerprint sensor, in the next year or 2.
Yr sucks although most android face unlock phones are pretty bad and only work in good light then its hit and miss wish they would take a leaf out of apples face unlock at least it works flawlessly 99% of the time even in the dark only android phones with 3d facial unlocked that came near apples was from Huawei think p40 pro etc maybe 30 pro if remember correctly , I would of much preferred a side mounted fingerprint than a in display one there just as bad with screen protectors etc
Had many inexpensive Chinese 'phones where face unlock is flawless, in near darkness too. My Smartisan is superb in any light, my TCL 10 Pro not so good, even in good light. It has been suggested that face unlock is not very secure (particularly the Chinese models) but I've never managed to fool it with anyone else's face, in a mirror, photographs or random objects . I really like face unlock though one of the problems with more recent versions of Android is that you are often required to use a password after a number of hours have expired. This also applies to fingerprints too. I realise it is for security, but it truly is a pain. My Windows PC has face unlock and it not only recognises me at some distance, but so far I've not needed a password in nine months or so since buying it.
I work with my hands and my fingerprints must become worn, cut or just plain dirty and I find optical fingerprint readers fail to recognise my fingers or thumbs from day to day, hour to hour. Ultrasonic or at least physical fingerprint readers work far better for me. So if Google can add face unlock, I would be grateful. Even if it is a greater security risk.

I'm in the same boat, I'm old, my fingertips are worn and getting fp unlock to work is a challenge at best.
On my OP7 (current device) I've been using face unlock for almost 2 years without a single issue. When I initially set it up I was only messing around so I set it up in bed while watching TV, with very dim lighting. But thanks to that it works every time, it's never failed under any lighting and 7 times out of 10 even works at the grocery when I'm wearing my mask.
I'll be using Swipe or None on my Pixel 6 lockscreen now because Google removed face unlock "for security" ... not sure how Swipe/None are more secure though, it's simply ridiculous and makes no sense at all.

I do wish they had both and was kind of counting on it due to earlier reports. I am also, I'll call it elderly since "old" seems to be a state of mind. I have trouble sometimes with FP especially in certain environments such as dry weather or wrinkly skin after swimming. I've taken to one hand mode so I can enter the keys rather quickly although I do curse at it most of the time. My experience with face unlock on the P4 was rather good in all kinds of lighting until face masks became ubiquitous. Then it didn't work at all. Apple figured it out but you needed an iWatch (is that what they call it?) in order to make it flawless and that is not acceptable to most users of Android. But hopefully they will enable both in the future perhaps with a software update or dare I say it, the P7?

Your face is now the property of the PRC.
I suspect Face Unlock will show up on the Pixel 6 in due time. Unfortunate that is not there in release.
I wouldn't be surprised for this to show up as a software update in the future officially, given the difficulties being experienced with the in-screen fingerprint sensor combined with screen protectors.

Almost certainly! Especially as a few have been direct imports of brands not sold (widely, if at all) out of the Chinese markets.

Question Fingerprint sensor - can this be THAT simple?

Hi all,
As many other Pixel 6 users I was struggling with FP sensor in inconsistency - failed unlocks mostly. I did worked a bit better without screen protector, but my personal experience tells me I need one, so the struggle continued.
Today I've made yet another attempt to re-scan my finger hoping to improve the experience and then I've noticed that the sensor seems to work way better if I place my finger 2-3 mm below what I would call centered over the icon on the screen.
No I wonder - is is just me + wishful thinking or maybe there is slight misaligned between the icon on the screen an actual position of the scanner. Any thoughts?
a.
Weirdly, it works on the bottom half of the FPS scanner icon, and not the top one, so it might be that the sensor is a little bellow the indicator
So it's not just me and my pixel. Nice
You should have posted in reddit instead
You might be right, but I don't use Reddit. Hope whoever might want to try this he would eventually find this thread.
It works well for me, you need to install certified only screen proyectors
Agreed, the FP issue is negligible without screen protector, it a slow yet solid scanner.
I've checked Google's list of certified screen protectors and pretty much all of these get some negative reviews from users. Not to mention all either not available or out of stock in EU.
Currently I'm using Spigen glass, not on the Google's list, but works fairly well.
As I wrote in my first post moving the finger slightly lower on the screen seems to help a lot.
Interesting observation about finger placement and sensor alignment. I'll definitely experiment with that.
I was cussing the fingerprint sensor up until March. It couldn't even enroll let alone unlock. Long, tedious story shortened... Since March after clean flashing the factory image the sensor improved a lot along with solving other screen related problems. My best enrollment results were with warm and clammy fingers from gripping a mug of hot coffee. As it is now only one finger out of four consistently unlocks, but that could just be me. Or placement. With that one finger I'm getting acceptable results with a cheap 9H screen protector (3-pack for $9) and default screen sensitivity. A screen protector 1-pack in the $25-40 range aint gonna happen.

I'm using my P6 without screen protector, and it is very slow and inaccurate for me. For reference, I'm coming from S21 and it's instantaneous and very precise.
What did it for me was that i ignored the instructions completely and did my own routine. for example, i never rolled my finger over the screen. instead i did both sides of the fingerprint just pressing multiple times and on slightly different angles.

I know it's a different technology, but it's been around for a while now, since S10 (2019) and it only got better with time, so i can't figure out how and why did google skip it for its supposed "the google phone flagship"

I agree, it is a bummer. For last few years I was mostly using IOS and got used to authentication being seamless. My last Android was Pixel 2 and I admit - I've missed the experience. FP sensor is giving me some hard time, but I'm super happy with my P6. It will stay with me for longer no doubt.
I did some more testing, retraining etc. and I feel my initial thoughts are not accurate. The reason why I believed the scanner is positioned slightly below the icon on the screen was most probably due to the part of my finger that got scanned the best.
It might be due to the security reasons Google mentioned on the blog, it might also be a smaller and less accurate scanner used in P6/P6P. The outcome stays the same - you need to be very precise while registering your finger print and train your muscle memory to place your finger accurately on the screen.
The scanner on the back of the phone like to the one in Pixel 5 is not only using different tech, but it also makes obvious to a user where to put the finger. Pixel 6 makes it a bit harder, but that's about it.
With a deliberate finger positioning and some practice you can be pretty happy with FP scanner on Pixel 6.
Hi. I got a solution from this xda forum (sorry I don't have the link) but it basically resolved my fingerprint hit-miss issue. Ideally it involved:
1. Remove all the fingerprint images 8 previously made and starting afresh.
2. After removing, before registering new finger prints, first rub the thumb / finger I wanted to register on my forehead so that it collects a good amount of face-oil. Apparently the fingerprint registers well when registering the finger with an oily finger (I refer to the face oil...I have no evidence that other oils work).
3. After a good rub of the finger on your face you now go about registering the finger(s). Suggestion is to register each finger at least 2 times.
When you try using the fingerprint scanner it will work well. You may have to press in a bit (not so much) but this works pretty well.
