Question Is there a way to address this 5.0 GHz Hotspot problem? - OnePlus Nord N200 5G

Good day, everyone!
I recently attempted, but failed, to utilize my mobile hotspot to connect a friend's phone to the internet through the 5.0 GHz AP Band. The hotspot shuts off after around 7 or 8 seconds when the AP band is set to "5.0 GHz". For my hotspot to not automatically switch off after about 7 or 8 seconds, I had to resort to utilizing the "2.4 GHz" AP frequency.
I really want to utilize the "5.0 GHz" AP band on my mobile hotspot without having to worry about it shutting down every 7 or 8 seconds, since, although I realize that I will be limiting the bandwave to a smaller region, I will be getting better speeds for my mobile hotspot connections in return.
I read a potential fix posted on this oneplus thread (https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/wifi-hotspot-5ghz-not-working.959323/) that sadly didn't work, and provided you have ADB, the major steps outlined were as follows:
1. Connect ADB to your phone
2. Run adb shell settings get global tether_dun_required
- Take note of the value you get (I believe I got "null" the first time around)
3. Run adb shell settings put global tether_dun_required 0 - restart your phone to get 5.0GHz tethering
If it's important to know, I'm running build 11.0.1.12.DE18CB (OxygenOS) on a T-Mobile variation (DE2118) that has been rooted using Magisk.
If anybody is having this difficulty, or if anyone knows how to repair the problem, it would be much appreciated if you could respond to this thread.

Hotspot being all ****ed up and barely working is a long standing "feature" of OnePlus even on qualcomm, and Nord has definitely got the worst of it.
On my device (DN2103_11_A.20), the 5Ghz setting is ignored entirely, it always opens 2.4Ghz hotspot.
Weirdly enough, it does that even while being connected to 5Ghz AP at the same time which I didn't think was even possible. On most mediatek phones, if you use wifi connection, hotspot will insist on sharing its band - ie hotspot band is forced to the channel of the AP the phone is connected to and relaying internet from.
The 2.4Ghz hotspot on Nord2 runs very flaky (only ~5mbits to LTE connection running at 50mbits for the phone itself). Moreover, when not using LTE, but phone is connected to wifi (regardless of whether 2.4Ghz or 5GHz) that is relayed to "forced 2.4Ghz" hotspot, that wifi uplink will become flaky too: 500Mbit/s -> 5mbit/s on 5Ghz, 50Mbit/s->5mbit/s on 2.4Ghz AP. Meaning if you use your phone as range extender, internet will be severely slowed down on the phone itself, and become almost as sucky as it is for hotspot clients.
To top it all off, the issue of "disconnecting after 5-8 secs" occurs randomly for me even on 2.4Ghz, typically in AP relaying situation on same band as explained above. The hotspot toggle is not switching itself off in the UI though - the hotspot AP SSID disappears from the air, as if wisi baseband were repeatedly crashing or something.
The only workaround I know of is to disconnect from wifi, disable hotspot, enable LTE, enable hotspot, let people connect and *then* finally connect to wifi (which "reroutes" hotspot clients from LTE to my wifi uplink).
I don't see how DUN could be related at all here.
tl;dr: Don't bother with 5Ghz hotspot, since the wifi driver is so utterly broken for hotspot it doesn't matter which band you use.

It is terrible to realize that OnePlus has a persistent problem with this, but considering the number of discussions I noticed about this issue (5.0 GHz hotspot not functioning), all on diverse OnePlus devices, I am not surprised. In addition, I wonder why "Nord" may have suffered the worst of such a condition.
The problem you suffer from is unusual. I wish I could assist you, but sadly, I am no expert in these things.
It is interesting, since, it appears that there are some circumstances in which my 5.0 GHz hotspot performs well (Doesn't switch off automatically after 7/8 seconds) and other instances in which it doesn't. Does anything like this happen to you regarding the phone hotspot, where it works better in some circumstances than others?

My apologies for confusion, as I missed your device is N200 (Snapdragon chip, on those hotspot doesn't suck as badly).
My device is Nord 2 5G 12G/256G (Mediatek Dimensity 1200). It's still interesting to compare notes about the hotspot bugs across diverse array of chipsets, though.
This at least hints its something wrong going on in OxygenOS itself.

I could tell where you were coming from, ezdiy, so don't worry.
At a first glance, I noticed that the OnePlus 6 and, as you mentioned, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G are both affected by the 5.0 GHz Band issue. However, there appears to be a general Mobile Hotspot issue among OnePlus devices, as evidenced by the OnePlus forums (From the OnePlus 5, to the OnePlus 8 Pro, OnePlus 9, and OnePlus 10 Pro 5G, among many others) and the OnePlus Reddit (Ex: OnePlus 7).
I'm genuinely curious as to what the issue is. It could very well be OxygenOS, as you suggested. Regardless of the issue, I'm curious as to how long it will take for OnePlus to truly resolve such widespread problems.

[Q] Weak Wi-Fi?

Has anyone else had issues with the strength of the wi-fi signal on this phone? When I'm in certain areas of my house, I will have severe lag with browsing, with the People hub, etc. Music and video will stream poorly, with heavy buffering. Basically, I get all the signs of low signal. The problem is, I've never had a problem with other phones I've used, including an HD7, Dell Venue Pro, Nexus S, Nokia N8, etc.
I tested the WiFi signal in these areas, and I get back a consistent signal between 70dbm - 80dbm, so I have a moderate amount of signal to work with. Has anyone else noticed poor WiFi coverage with this phone? Should I get it exchanged?
Same. Something is definitely fishy with the wi-fi on this device. It seems to come and go, and manifests as poor or even no wi-fi capability even when the phone says it is connected to a strong wi-fi signal.
I frequently cannot get a solid Tango video call going between 2 Radars on my home wi-fi network. Pretty frustrating seeing "network problems" and getting a choppy experience when both phones are on wi-fi with full signal strength.

Today is my first day with the radar and I'm noticing WiFi issues. I think though some of it is related to Zune WiFi sync connecting...

The Radar I have can connect to my 802.11g router no problem but can't even find my 802.11n. I'm thinking it doesn't have N connectivity...

I found out my particular problem is the Windows Phones only work on the 2.4ghz (currently used on my 802.11g router) band and not the 5ghz (my 802.11n router) band.
Now I know.
To the OP, this 2.4ghz band is usually crowded so maybe where you are going in your house, your phone is meeting with interference (land line wireless phone, neighbors wi-fi, etc...).

I don't think it's an interference issue, as every other device I own has no such issues, including 3 other Windows Phones (Dell Venue Pro, HD7 Omnia 7). And despite already using the channel with the least interference, I've tried switching that around as well. To me, there is clearly something not performing correctly in regards to the WiFi radio on this device.

[Almost SOLVED] WiFi connect/disconnect

Update, I've had my phone replaced by Samsung tech in Plano TX, that doesn't help, but updating my router to the Apr 2012 eko dd-wrt did make some differences. Also the ota update from att has a new modem apk and that also chg'd the phone functionality. One thing that I have seen is that the phone reports the wifi network signal as being lower than before, and the output signal is slightly higher. I find that I have to occasionally turn the wifi on and off to reset it.
Short list of fixes and things to try:
1 update routers firmware
2 no dual encryption
3 some routers with 300 or greater Mbps settings need to be toned down to 150 or less
4 phone likes mixed protocol network over N only.
5 turn off phone power save
6 un check the carrier hot spot notify.
7 un check open wifi notify
8 pick a single band 2.4 or 5ghz. Note that updates with this can temporarily lock in to that frequency and not allow changes.
9. Dial *#0011# menu button, wifi and turn off the power save setting. This has to be done on every boot, and may cancel the display timeout.
10 On 5Ghz don't use DFS channels
Incorrect since people who have installed some roms and cm 10 are saying that they don't have any problems: I am almost certain now, that the wifi disconnect/connect issue is hardware incompatibility.

Here's a recap since the guy has a sprint phone and won't recognize my issue there.
Here's the issue I've been having. I'm in a very active 2.4 wifi neighborhood. Even though I had the advanced wifi set to 'Always on' it kept disconnecting (and instantly reconnecting) to my network. The phone is scanning the neighborhood almost every 15 seconds. It's simply WPA-2 with just AES (and I'm not changing to TKIP)
This is a problem for me as I use "Unlock wtih WiFi" to keep from having to enter my PIN when I'm at work/home and "Home Sweet Home" which uploads any photos I have taken to my server when it detects the home wifi network (and deletes them from my phone after 3 months).
Anyway, I was just on the chat with Samsung and in the end we did this,
1. disable the ATT WIFI auto login function (seems there's something similar on the Sprint phones that's a issue).
2. soft reboot the phone (turn off, pull battery, count to 30, boot up)
However this suggested solution doesn't work.
The wifi isn't staying connected though the breaks are very very temporary, but long enough for those apps to kick in.
Update additional things tried:
3. Turned off WiFi power save in the *#0011# service menu
4. Turned off Open WiFi notifications, ATT Autologon.
5. Selected a single wifi band (5Ghz) where there is ONLY one network, mine
FWIW, I like that it connects to my 5Ghz wifi at 150 mbps, the speed is great.
6. I've disabled the Unlock with WiFi and it still occurred.

FWIW. I just got off a 45 minute call with Samsung Help Support, went to level 3 support in Texas. This is newly documented, I've referenced this forum for additional reports of the dual encryption and the wifi connnect/reconnect issue I'm having. My ticket # 2113584507 (just for disconnect/reconnect) which you can mention at level 1 as having the same disconnect/connect issue. I specifically asked if I could post the ticket # so anyone could reference it at Level 1, but they will still take your own experience down.
Level 3 said they expect that they will be getting calls today since it's the first full day after the release. So if you want it fixed, CALL SAMSUNG, they're collecting bug reports.
I was having this same problem yesterday afternoon at work. Last night I set my radio to 5GHz only and today it hasn't happened once.
I am so glad I found this as it was driving me nuts on my new Sprint SIII. I think it's bouncing back and forth when both are available as at work, it stayed solid where we only have 2.4.

I had that problem the entire time I had my Captivate. Very short disconnects. Only reason I knew was because of a task I was using in Tasker having problems, and I set a method to track connection.
I fixed the problem with setting a static IP address. I used WiFi Static.
I'm using it on the S3 just to be sure.
Had the same problem. However I set it to connect to 2.4ghz and it stopped doing that. If I put it on auto it will do it. If I leave at 5 it won't connect.
I do however think I might have a wifi dead spot. I notice if I hold it a certain way I lose a signal or two on wifi. Or the speed of wifi decreases. Anyone else having the same issue? It might just be me

Have any of you tried this ^ ? Mine is set up like that, and no issues at all. I did have those issues on my Captivate until I did above.
I'm having a rash of the issue tonight--dropping wifi and now says unable to connect due to poor reception (I'm sitting beside my router)...

although I've gone to level 3, I need you and everyone else experiencing this to report it so that its corrected. Granted they are certainly going to visit the wifi code for the dual encryption issue and stability with Auto frequency, but fixing this could be done at the same time.
FWIW, since I have two routers and 3 networks, one of them is simply a pure G up to 54mbps default firmware setup (since it's the FCC's) and connecting to that greatly reduces but not entirely eliminates the problem (even in the same room). It's much worse on my "N" only networks. And I have tried static IP that also doesn't fix the problem. This is some sort of software issue in the renegotiable speed setting or timing settings or power savings. Off course it certainly could be some badly (or purposely) behaved app software too.

Interesting. Given that I don't seem to be having any issues, it seems it is not a problem for everyone.
Had the same problem. Net gear router wrnd3400. Wifi kept dropping so then I connected to Verizon router and no problems. Seems to be a problem with some after market routers.

More likely to be a timing issue or protocol issues as the phone scans and tests various networks on different bands and protocols. Many people have n routers that do mixed networks, b, g and n, and they just may not know what they are doing all the time as the phone renegotiates with the router. I have a wrt 610v2 doing only n on 2.4/5ghz and on the the Netgear N300 it drops less doing 2.4 g and at my friends who have a wrt54g and it dropped even less often. The app that I use to enable my lock screen pin makes this more noticeable.

Level 2 was better, and we in essence setup a new ticket with the videos already linked to it. I offered a sendlog, I offered to install a test app if they have one. I already beta test for a number of app developers as well as some major hardware OEMs.
PLEASE, everyone, call samsung support directly and register a ticket that this is a problem so that they have the information first hand and not via ATT or Sprint, etc which they might ignore.

I just called. They said they would note it 'on my account'. They indicated it would be a Google issue, not Samsung. They only do the hardware (and of course, it can't be a hardware issue, can it? )
I was thumbing through the phone logs from a boot to connection and reconnect. I have to say Chrome has a lot of errors thrown particularly in the bookmark sync. Also it appears that every time the wifi is initially started it checks for authentication for tethering on both the wifi and BT. It almost looks like the phone thinks that the wifi ap is off and restarts wifi scanning.

I have experienced the slow network and disconnect/reconnect issue on this phone since it arrived, but all is normal on our 5 or so other mobile devices with this Netgear WNDR3700 router on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Nexus 9 Wifi 5GHz

Just got my Nexus 9 today from Google Play store UK. Everything seems working ok, except:
I cannot find any wifi 5GHz. I am connecting to my home 5GHz (Virgin Media Superhub) from my HP Pavillion laptop, MBP, iPhone and iPad. But on Nexus 9, I am not able to scan any 5GHz network:
2.4Ghz works fine though:
I have enabled all possible channels in Settings (Wifi Analyzer):
In system Settings, I have tried both Automatic and 5GHz only:
I have performed OTA updated after first time switched on device and connected to 2.4GHz network at work, didn't notice whether there was an issue on 5GHz until I got home.
So, is there a problem with the latest OTA, or simple this unit needs to be RMA?

Mobile devices don't always support all the 5GHz channels that an access point might use. Try setting the Access point to use the lowest channel, say 36 and see if that works?

Thanks for the hint. It looks like Nexus 9 only able to see channel 34 ~ 48. My broadband AP has selection of 36 ~ 136, and it was on "Auto Performance" and auto selected channel 100 tonight.

Different countries have different requirements, but often most countries only allow certain frequencies to be used outside, and other frequencies for 5GHz may only be used inside buildings to prevent interference to radar etc.
A mobile device can of course be used outside, so can end up only being setup to use much fewer frequencies than a router designed for indoor use.
Sometimes the router isn't set to the right country, so ends up using frequencies it shouldn't really be using with the mobile device correctly set so ignoring those frequencies or the other way around. 5GHz is a lot more complex for what frequencies can and can not be used, see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels and the chart at the bottom, you'll understand why 5GHz devices sometimes don't see each other, it's a lot more confusing than 2.4GHz.

To use 5ghz have you tried configuring from WIFI from settings - tapping the three dots next to the magnifying glass - Advanced - WIFI Frequency band.
It gives you the option of selecting 2.4 or 5 or both.

i had the same problem! Thank you so much for the fix!
You should be able to use channels 149-161 as well, it's the channels in between that are set aside for DFS and radar, so many devices don't support them.
Working fine for me on Channel 153 with a Nighthawk R7000.

Got mine to connected on the Virgin Media Superhub by changing the channels as suggested. Can confirm it works but very unstable and keeps dropping connection.

I got the same problem! I bought my N9 on Nov 11 and used 5GHz without problem until today. In the WiFi Analyzer suddenly can show 2.4GHz only. I have reboot and clear all WiFi App cache & data., still cannot show.
Even connect to 2.4GHz, it took long time to Connect and Authenticate the connection.

Been a while, but since this is one of the top Google results, and I've been pulling my hair for a couple of hours without finding a solution online, I thought I might chime in with what I found.
If your N9 is not seeing certain 5GHz channels, what is your model, WiFi or LTE? Also, apparently there is an "international" version of the LTE one, which I just got (I'm in the US) because it was cheap, and I didn't mind it affecting certain LTE bands, but I didn't think it would affect WiFi. In any case, the solution was to simply insert a SIM card from my region (T-mobile US) and the missing 5GHz networks appeared in the list. I don't have a solution if this is happening with WiFi-only Nexus 9's though.
You need to insert the SIM after turning on the tablet. If you turn it on with the SIM inserted, it won't show the hidden 5GHz channels. You can just reinsert it, or toggle off/on airplane mode though.
I also googled to see if there was an app to change Wifi regions, but the only one I found (from XDA) requires root, and doesn't work for this particular problem anyway.
Well I have never been able to connect to the 5ghz channel until now. Finally! Changing the router to use channel 48 for the 5ghz and it is running as expected. I love fixes like this.

Do you have a Wi-Fi or LTE model? If you have an LTE model have you tried inserting a SIM card like I said in the post above? I got access to the upper channels which are supposed to be higher performance. From 149 to 161.
whats the highest linkspeed you guys are getting? my nexus 6 gets 866Mbps , i guess it dpends on your AC router specs mine is ac1750 i think
what app do i use to check what channel my nexus 9 is connected to? i think its below 36

I use netgears wifi analyzer.

Wifi connectivity issues

I constantly drop wifi in my house. Is this just my phone or is it an issue? Tried everything and won't stay connected. Network just disappears and then connects 10-15 second later.
I have some issues also. Just bad firmware on LG side
I'd check your wifi modem, I use my LG V10 on numerous different modems, and have no problems with it. It connects to my home, alone with a few places I go to, and even when tje signal is extremely weak. So I'm not seeing the same thing

2.4 seems to hold connection longer than 5ghz. Luckily I have unlimited data. I have almost never used WiFi on this device due to this. The problem is both on my Asus RT router and my brother's Netgear Nighthawk router. Both with latest firmware. I'd like to have the option of a stable WiFi connection though.

I've read a few posts that suggest being sure the MAC address of your phone is registered with your router. I've come from 2 galaxies and I do feel the LG is a little more sensitive to a low or fluctuating signal. I "feel" it, but everytime I actually compare, it doesn't seem to be the case

Tried the registering the Mac on both bands. Tried several device resets. Disconnected all other attached devices from the router. Had much hope for this. But no bueno. Still dropped connection after less the three minutes. Disabled 4G and the other nanny settings for WiFi on the V10. Just hoping for the much needed firmware update (s) for this sweet phone.

OnePlus 7T Pro - wifi stability issues

Hi,
I have a new OnePlus 7T Pro (version 10.1.4.HD01BA) and I'm having wifi stability issues.
The wifi has micro-disconections which impact any application which needs a stable connection (ex: online games, file transfers)
The symptom is a short disconnection from the wifi network: the wifi icon on the top briefly shows a "!" to indicate the disconnection; then everything comes back to normal).
From what I gathrered from different tests, the disconnects only occurs when using wifi on a mesh network (e.g. Orbi) or multi-channel wifi router.
I have no stability issues when using 4G connection.
I also tested 2 different mesh networks, the OP7TPro Wifi is unstable.
When testing on a simple channel access point (ex: another android phone), the wifi connection is stable.
On the mesh networks which give me stability issues, my older OnePlus5 does not experience any specific problems.
I tried to wipe my phone to factory defaults but the problem persists.
How can I find out if this is related to a software issue or if my device is faulty ?

Hello, I realize, this thread is almost a year old. I bought this phone and I'm having the same issue!
It seems that it maybe is related to bluetooth being turned on.
Have you somehow solved this problem? I read many complaints over the net when googling, but all the suggested solutions don't solve the problem completely, the drops still occur.
The problem has been known for years and occurs not only in the OnePlus 7 phones. When we connect to WiFi 2.4GHz and turn on bluetooth, WiFi transfer decreases drastically, the solution is to connect via WiFi 5GHz if our router allows it. If not, only the mobile network remains.

I also noticed, that the bluetooth range is really poor with my bluetooth headphones in comparison to my previous LG V30.

Use 20Mhz channel on your router instead of 40Mhz, that should solve the throttle in speed issue on 2.4Ghz band

I first faced this trouble in my oneplua 6, so your point about this being a oneplus 7 series problem is wrong
