Question AT&T Software Update app huge? - Moto G Play (2021)

Hey guys, just got this phone a few weeks ago. The 32GB storage is a bit limited, and I already have an SD card installed, but I'd like to free up some more internal space for apps. I noticed that the AT&T Software Update app is.. huge. Not sure what's up with that, or if I should bother trying to find a way to dump its' user data. See screenshots for more info.
Incidentally, if it's OK to dump its' data, how do I do that considering the option isn't enabled in the app manager?

Installing apps

I see a lot of talk about the memory and how much is available. but I was wondering about installation of apps-
1, Where are they installed to?
2. How much room is there for them?
3. Is this shared with the RAM memory?
I'm keen to upgrade to an Android phone, but if the app storage is small then this would put me off.
So far app storage for me has not been a problem and I have been downloading a few. I have 102MB still free. Not sure how much was there to begin with though...
The memory for app storage is separate from the RAM - like it should be on WiMo and Symbian handsets.
If you root the Hero you can store apps on the SD card, though I have not done this.
I think unless you go on a download frenzy, you will be fine.
Most apps will allow storage of their cache / data on the SD in their settings menu - such as FeedR (RSS feed app), Twidroid (Twitter app) etc.
it really is nothing to worry about...i had to test a magic for my work a few months ago and one of the tests was to fill the internal memory and then try and use the phone...they'd had issues with windows mobile obviously....and it took over 130 apps installed before it got anywhere near full and still it worked fine for standard use.
seriously, unless you are installing EVERYTHING, then you'll be fine!
That puts my mind at rest. Thank you.
If you do run out of memory, you could always root it. Not that im advocating that or anything ;P

System ROM space available?

Hi - probably a stupid question, but when I open up Titanium Backup... on the home page, it shows the space available for the various partitions: System ROM, Internal, SD Card, and Ext SD Card. I notice that my System ROM partition is 87% full (87MB free, out of 667MB total).
When I first noticed this, I started to move some more apps to SD card, hoping to clear up some space. I think I moved about 15 apps, some of which were pretty large (Angry Birds, Angry Birds Rio, Firefox, for example). Yet, after a reboot, the System ROM space availability was exactly the same. What gives? Is this a fault in Titanium Backup? (dev won't answer any questions.. so I'm asking here...) If it's just a fault, then how do I know what an accurate space availability is?
Thanks in advance!
Hey gang,
Ok - so it's been a few months since my last post about this. I've even updated to JB a few weeks ago too. Removed a bunch of apps entirely, moved some more to SD Card, and now I have even less System ROM space - I'm down to 2kB What gives? Does anybody understand how this is calculated? Why is it showing such a small amt of free space? 2kB available should mean that my phone would lock up because there's no space available, I would think.
Does anyone know how to create more space? Just about a week or two ago I had 30MB avail, now down to 2kB!
Are you on xt912?
System is only for "main ROM" not really a biggie
Apps use internal for data
Sd card is for your data
Sd card ext is well the removable sd card

Oops - sry, yes, I'm on 98.72.16.xt912.Verizon.en.us - CDMA - JB 4.1.2, using stock OTA update without any custom recoveries at the moment (I'm still deciding if I want to put BootStrap back on, or change to SafeStrap).
I guess I'm not overly concerned about the minimal space to the ROM, but 2kB! C'mon, that's virtually out of space. I have a hard time figuring out why I have so little space. If Verizon pushes out any updates (that's a huge IF), then I won't have any room to update. That could cause an issue, don't you think? How much space do you have on your ROM?
I have 37mb available in my system, i do remember on ics there was video in the system that could be removed to free up around 40mb.. Worth a look to see if it's hidden somewhere , although root access is probably needed. Lucky for me i have it

I might have to remove the vids - where are they located? Are they the ones in the /preinstall/KnowYourDevice/ folder??
If so, I removed them and placed them on my PC. System ROM size didn't change. hmph

[Q] Cannot free Internal storage-diff free storage info in storage & app menu

Hi,
I have a weird problem with my S2 running samsung stock ICS 4.0.3. i have been using sgs2 for over a year now and whenever my free internal storage goes below 250MB i move the apps to SD card. But now No. of apps in SDcard has hit the Android limit so i simply delete the Apps. But off late that is not freeing up my internal memory. Soon after deleting apps it shows internal memory freed but by next day or it again fills up. This is when i check my storage at Settings-> storage (shows ~220MB). when i check my with settings -Applications it stays free and now its showing 600MB free. This was not the case earlier. Both the values above remained more or less same. So i have deleted ~300MB worth of applications without freeing up my storage
I have been searching vigorously but found no solutions. I have read about Wifi logs issue but it should have started soon after ICS upgrade. In fact till very recently it was fine coz i had to delete lot of Appa due to Android SD card bug. my free space went upto ~400Mb. Not now suddenly. In fact i changed nothing in my sgs2 to cause this. I noticed this issue when i installed and then uninstalled SYBIL. Would deleting Dalvik cache help? if yes then how to do it?
What else should i do? Is there a way to resolve this of find a workaround without Rooting. I love to root my phone and enjoy the freedom it offers but i have absolutely no time to do that.
Please help
Helppp... something .... anything ... am i the only unfortunate one with this issue??
or if you know a an expert in XDA who i can PM .. please forward me his handle.

finally found a solution in a thread in xda "A simple way to free up storage space is by deleting all the log files in the device memory. Just dial *#9900# on your phone and select option 2 “Delete dumpstate/logcat” in the prompted menu. It's not necessary to root your phone either. I restored 1.4 gig of space after doing this."

Is this true - internal storage only 2 gb???

I saw this on another forum. Is this true? It would make it unusable to me, and I just ordered one before seeing this. Do we not have at least 12 GB free for apps?
"..an issue I do not know how to resolve. It comes w 4.3 pre installed but the internal storage is not unified (due to USB storage enabled) so just under 2GB is allocated as app storage. This being the setup on older android version we had the option to move individual apps to the secondary partition b within the app option but this being 4.3 this option does not exist so this really puts a damperbn usability of this device."

I'm guessing this is the US variation of the Mate 2 you are taking about. I already have a lot of apps installed and it's still telling me I have 4.2 gigs available for app storage. Hope that answers your question

Thanks! Yes to USA version.
Does anyone know how much memory is available out of the box for apps?

If you add what it says is available to the what it says I'm using, it totals 6.81 GB. I doubt that includes system apps, as I said I have a lot installed. I had to keep them all on the phone because the ones I moved to the SD card the widgets didn't load on restart and I wasn't getting notifications.
Hope this helps you.

Thanks!
But 6.81 is pretty bad - some 16gb phones have around 12 gb for apps. What in the world is taking up so much memory? I need to install copilot maps which are over 4 gb plus all the other software I use. Don't know if this is going to work for me. Heck - I have almost 5.52 gb free for apps on a 8gb moto-g phone

Well, screen shots of my internal file system storage. My phone is rooted so I could free up more space deleting some system apps I don't use like Facebook but people had to reinstall the system apps they deleted to get the last update to install, and I don't feel like messing with that. I just disabled them. Can you install your co-pilot apps on the SD card?
Sent from my MT2L03
No, I don't think the maps can be loaded on sd card.
Darn - I purchased without checking this out - figured if my 8 gb phone had 5.52 gb free a 16 gb phone would have around 12. My fault for not doing proper research. Everyone was saying how much they like the phone. and I let that sway me. Guess I will send it back as 6.81 gb free in 2014 is almost $99 phone territory.
Looks like copilot is downloading fine. I'll let you know if I have issues after it completes.
It gives you the option to use extsd as default storage.
You are showing 12.69 GB available internal storage for apps. Is this correct? Or is it the 10.50 that is available to apps?
Yes 12.69 available. But when I go into settings > manage apps it states 5.8gb for apps. I believe it uses internal/external for app data, so I believe you'll be OK
check in the copilot options. maybe it has the ability to choose where to save the map data
NOKIA HERE does ... and its awesome btw

Apps switching storage

Hey, all.
This isn't a real big deal but it's annoying.
My S5 (SM-G900T) is rooted and has been since about two months after I bought it new.
It's running on stock everything 6.0.1
Baseband G900TUVU1GQC2
Kernel 3.4.0-7500527
A couple months ago I had to do a factory reset as well as flash a new stock OS because it set itself in Emergency mode and wouldn't open. Oh, and I really rooted using Odin on a PC.
Ever since that happened a lot of my third party apps, that I want and have installed in my external SD card don't stay there. Always after a reboot or restart. I'm pretty sure they aren't or can't move any other time on there own.
Its really annoying because they are my largest apps (of course) and my internal memory has only a couple of G's of memory left and when these apps jump ships my phone won't let me download anything etc....
Its my backup phone so its not crucial but, driving me nuts.
How can I keep the apps where I want them? I've used ROM Manager to direct apps to the external SD card by force and obviously it's not helping, even on new installs it doesn't force to the external SD like it should. That's another topic for another place.
Some help would be really cool and much appreciated
Thanks
