Question OP8T to P6 - Google Pixel 6

So, I'm eyeing that Best Buy offer for Verizon Pixel 6. I'm thinking of upgrading my mother's OP8T to a pixel 6, she keeps complaining of the OP8T overheating and restarting randomly even during periods at night when the phone isn't even in use. (I personally haven't tried to test these problems). Are there any quirks for the Pixel 6 I should be worried about (ie 5G connectivity, battery drain, random restarts, overheating, etc).

Outside of some minor issues caused by my own tinkering with root, I've had no issues with this thing. Battery life is fantastic (with moderate usage it's usually still over 75% at the end of the day, with Adaptive Battery off), no random reboots, no overheating, signal seems good. There was talk of problems with the fingerprint sensor, but those seem to have been fixed - no issues with that here either. I have had it noticeably heat up a bit during intensive multitasking and during updates, but never enough to be a problem, and that's with it in a silicone case that probably traps heat.
You don't plan on rooting it, right? If you had any intention of doing so (for adblocking, etc) do note the Verizon variant is permanently bootloader locked, afaik.

[Q] AT&T Atrix Exchange/Return Options

Picked up an Atrix March 17th and have been having issues with it, not really sure what the best option is as far as replacement vs exchange vs return
Replacement would be fine if it's just a defective unit, but how would I know until AFTER It's replaced?
Exchange would also be great but what else is currently out that can compare? I only see LG Thrill and GS2, neither of which will be available by my April 17th return/exchange cutoff date.
Return would also work, but won't ATT insist on charging a restock fee? Would I retain my upgrade eligibility after a straight return?
Anyway, heres the issues I have been having
AT&T - Rooted .26 updated to .57, not re-rooted, not unlocked
Launcher Pro, no other major mods. No Auto sync'ing, no background data. Auto brightness outside, darkest setting indoors (8hrs a day indoors), BT off, Wifi off, GPS off.
1. Battery life - It is much lower than expected even with relatively light use, Drains 10-20% in 1st hour of use typically, Down to 30-40% by lunchtime typically.
2. Overheating - The device get abnormally hot on the bottom, typically within 1minute of use. Abnormal battery drain seems to be associated with the heat, but it only happens about 1/2 the time
3. Lockups/reboots - It locks up pretty regular and totally shut off a few times.
4. Wifi - It's terrible! Doesn't maintain connection and has very poor range vs other phones/devices on the same networks. I lose connection from LR to Bathroom, it's only about 15ft away with 1 sheet rock wall in between
5. "4G" Capping to 3G speeds is VERY annoying. What am I paying for getting a 4G device if theres actually no 4G? (And yes I know they are rolling out update to "Fix" this in April...Doesn't change the fact that they sold me a vette and I got a civic)
6. Colors - Am I the only one that's noticed the terrible hue's in the yellow/brown/orange color range? Maps roads seriously look like baby puke green on my device. I've compared with SGS, Iphone 4, Iphone 3gs and blackberry's...The colors are definately WAYYY off.
Outside those issues It's been a pretty solid device, very fast and responsive with Launcher Pro loaded. Love the fingerprint scanner, resolution, HDMI + media player. I'm leaning towards straight return, use old phone till SGS2 releases, or maybe Iphone4. Ideas/suggestions?
your performance issues are something is running out of control. Rapid battery drain and warmth indicate someting is running.
My phone never locks up, never reboots, and battery lasts all day with heavy use.
I returned my Atrix as well. I think there will definitely be a bit of a wait before any of the phones you mentioned come out. I am using an old phone at the moment and am biding my time until the next batch of phones come out.
Patience is key.

Yea I had the same thought but couldn't figure it out. Looking at task manager/process explorer didn't show anything actively doing anything, or at least not to the point of extreme battery drain and heating.

Yea I still have the 3Gs and work also has 7 Dell Streaks laying around still, may try to grab one as a temp till something better is released.

Moto Z Freezing and (Possible overheating)

Hey y'all,
Quick question to those who own the Moto Z.
1. What's your battery life and Screen on Time?
2. Do you use the battery mod?
3. Do you use a case with it?
I'm having overheating issues when using the an Incipio Bumper case + TUMI battery mod :
Device randomly freezes (requires a reboot to get out) or it doesn't wake up from sleep.
Bumper only / no Mods: no issues (except the usual terrible battery life)
Battery Mod only: thermal throttling (it lags a fair bit, occasional system shutoff)
(above happens at room temperature or air conditioned room)
There's no overheat warning either and issues persists after hard resets.
Previously there's issues of random freezes every couple few days, but I'm not too sure if it's due to heat or the device itself going bad.
Thanks.
Device: XT1650-03
Build: NPL25.86-30
My Moto Z does sometimes get hot and lag, especially when using the Tumi battery mod. Battery life is pretty bad for me but I work from home so it didn't bother me. I just use the battery mod when I'm going to be out all day.
Interestingly, the new Turbo Power mod doesn't seem to cause the same overheating issues.

I'd recommend getting a warranty replacement from Motorola. Their service is good and will have a new device to you in a couple of days.

Can you confirm that ? The TurboPower Mod I mean.
Yeah. I will probably head up to the local service center, reproduce the issue then and there

I haven't had any issues since using the Turbo Power Mod. But I've only had it a week so the jury is still out.
I regularly use the Incipio Battery Mod and It barely heats up, no throttling whatsoever. My device rarely gets warm, even when gaming. Z's outside the US have a lower clocked 820, maybe that's why.

Hi.
My phone heats up a lot when ambient temperature is around 30-35 deg c. While using it in the sun , phone temps go to 41-44deg c, that's the point where the phone throttles hard. It's so annoying to use it when it gets hot which is almost all the time, coz it's so slow.
Don't even need to talk about battery mod. Literally my phone stops working when it's charging with the mod. Btw I'm using mophie battery mod.
I'm planning to throw this trash away. But I invested in this ****. .
So frustrated.
I'm sure Moto says this is common and it's part of the deal.
Please someone give me a fix. If rooting and custom ROM solves it then I'm down for it. But since my phone's still in warranty period someone confirm if there's any ROM which solves this. .
Thanks in advance.

Hey Sanjay,
I updated to this firmware: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-z/how-to/how-to-update-to-official-7-1-1-moto-z-t3640298
And it solves like 90% of my issues listed above.
My Z sometimes gets warm when using Chrome, but that seems to be a Chrome-specific issue (already had this with my OnePlus Two, which, however, got HOT, not just warm ...) Apart from that, I can say that I'm very happy with my Z which I find to run consistently stable (not using any mods.) I usually get SOT of 3-4 hrs and have to charge every 1.5 days. I'm not an overly heavy user, though, and rarely play games.
Oh, and I'm using the European version, so if it's true that the US version clocks higher, this might explain why my phone never gets really hot (and also doesn't need to throttle aggressively even under high load.)
I have experienced sudden freezing frequently on my Moto Z Nougat 7.0 and still persisted on 7.1.1 - If i put the device down and returned in 10-15mins, it would be back to normal. Other times when I became more frustrated I would turn off, clear cache & reboot. This problem happens between one and two times a day. The battery life and projections are slaughtered upon rebooting from freezes. Safe mode doesn't exhibit the same problems at all so it is probably an app.
Color me SOL.
My Moto Z has been exhibiting a similar issue. It would heat up very easily on even mundane tasks, thermal throttle HARD and stay there until I leave it to cool off before very easily doing do again, at which the phone is already past the point of being uncomfortable to hold. It gets worse still with the Mophie Motomod.
I had to use a custom kernel and deliberately put the CPU in a state that causes it to be slower than a SD400 in order to even get acceptable temperatures.
I can’t do any OTA updates because my particular device would constantly brick every time it would apply an update. It has done this twice already and requires constant reflashing. As such, that guide isn’t of any help for me.
And since Motorola support wouldn’t help me as I didn’t get the phone from the country where I’m living now, I’m SOL. I might just get the Galaxy Note8 and be done with it, especially after receiving 2 electrical shocks from it (although to be fair, that may be more of a result of a bad USB-C cable, but still scary nonetheless).
Aside from the aforementioned shock (more to blame with the cable but the metal design did not help either), it’s been issue after issue since the beginning of this year, and since Motorola refuses to help due to an internal company policy, I’m forced to consider cutting losses and switching back to the Note. Really unhappy with this.

Is Elephone even trying to do anything?

I mean.. there is some serious hardware inside, but software is literally an unlimited stream of crap. So many obvious and infuriating bugs and they don't even fix them. Is it even worth using this phone anymore?
I'd love to see an 8.1 update but I'm curious about what's biting your phone. I see nothing to complain about on the ones I and my son received last week. There's no new build on them but battery, wifi, video sync, call quality, even the camera focus problem most people reported don't seem to be an issue.
I was careful to remove the adups spyware on the first day, and added Greenify, noLED, Life360 and the latest action launcher. I also limited background apps to 3, and turned off as much location tracking stuff as possible in Google Maps without completely neutering it.
I get about 6 hours of SOT, and despite life360 the standby drain is negligible - if I set out to conserve battery I can get 2 days easy. The only downside I can find to this phone is that the decacore eats battery when playing Monument Valley 2.
But maybe it's just that my usage patterns are different. Can you describe some of the things that your phone does that bother you so I can try them on mine? And did you already get rid of the adups junk?

I have not removed the junk that a comes with the phone. Did you root to do this?
I am not having the issued described here in XDA as well.
I am getting roughly a day with my battery.
In my experience, it is the screen that is eating up my battery.
When Auto brightness is on, it gets too bright for me so I setup a custom auto brightness using tasker.
No need to root to remove spyware, just install ADB on your computer and then do per https://forum.xda-developers.com/elephone-s8/how-to/beware-com-adups-fota-myapplication-t3741622

Extremely inconsistent Battery behavior on several Phones

Hello everyone,
I'm not normally on the Moto Z Forums, but i currently (as the techy guy in my family) am faced with a strange issue. I have 5 people in close relationship (Parents, wife, husband of my sister...) with Moto Z's. Every single one of them is acting really weird. They all randomly shut down between 50% and 15%. After turning back on, they state anywhere between 1% and 5% charge left. On plugging the charger in, they claim 100% charger within under 30 minutes. Battery life between those 5 phones varies between poor and abysmal (sub 1h SOT to 2h SOT).
All those things aren't phone specific. Every single phone has shown any of those combinations. All of them are out of warranty. Since most of them depend on their phone daily without replacements at hand atm, i'm not able to spend days unlocking, flashing, rooting or the likes. I'm trying to convince my wife to let me factory reset the phone, but atm, she'd rather live with it then having to re set up 3 years of phone usage (i get that to a point. Not how i use my phone, but "normal" people are different in that regard).
I already read several thread around degraded Batterys, but this doesn't seem to be the case here. The biggest Problem are the random shutdowns. You never know when, below 50%, the phone will just turn off.
Additionally, two of those phones sporadically Have malfunctioning microphones. In calls and recordings they occasionally only transmit static noise. Usually that fixes itself within an hour or two (without any intervention).
I'm at a loss here. Any tips on what to try to mitigate those Problems? Since we're at a point where most affected are debating buying new phones, i'm willing give anything a try (as far as i can get someone to give up their phone for a day). Thanks for reading all of that.

Random shutdown is a common battery problem known in all types of lithium cell batteries (very common in used laptops), it's very common in Moto Z due to small battery(degrading is more visible) and overheating(degrading happens quickly)
However, the bigger problem is that some phones show 100% charge without the battery actually charging to 100%. To test if your phone is affected by this bug which appears in degraded batteries, simply turn off the phone when it shows 100% and connect the charger while it's off and it should show different battery percentage (for me it shows 96%), you can further charge the battery for 1hour while it's off even if it shows 100% and you will notice a much better SoT

what you're describing IS a symptom of degraded batteries. once the batteries start to go bad, the % indicator can't be trusted.

Question Any overheating issues with your new Pixel 6/6 Pro?

Google hasn't had the best track record with their previous Pixels. They've all seemed to have at least one hardware issue. The Pixel 5s have overheating problems for example. Just wondering if anyone has run into any issues?
Haven't heard of any... but it's early in the game!
My 6 got hot during the initial setup, but once I turned off the 5G it cooled off a bit and I stayed on Wi-Fi.
Only a bit of warmth during initial setup, nothing that concerned me much.
The phone got very hot during charging.
Ok i just received my pixel 6 pro few hours ago and i am noticing heat issue around the back, starting from curve area, as i keep on using i can feel temperature in the back and screen as well. Really disappointed. I dont know what shall i do next

I am having the same exact issue. I went to the store and they told me that they will send the phone for assessment and will take a month. Ridiculous
Nope!
Video recording literally stopped after 7 min of 4k 60fps because the phone got too hot.
I got a message telling me to wait until the phone cools down. The screenshot of this message didn't even save..
My pixel 6 pro is getting hot during normal use too. Guess they need to update.
Yes it is getting extremely hot only by using insta, facebook, TikTok. No games installed. Left side of the phone starts getting warm then screen and back.
My phone was delivered on 26th Oct still have same issue. It looks like it'll be a case like snapdragon 810
My phone was overheating and battery drain a lot but since i put 4G on prefered nerwork, battery isn't draining anymore and don't heat no more.
Usefull or useless ?
My Pixel 6 Pro overheats recording 4K 60 and stops after 10-12min. Room temp 25c with no case.
I tried 4K 30 with the same results.
1080p 30 on the other hand can keep on going indefinitely I think. I got a message at 28min that the phone is getting hot, but it didn't stop the recording. Around 40min it reached thermal saturation and was fluctuating between 43c and 44.4c. I stopped it at 48:49min.
I think the new camera sensor overheats before the SoC and stops the recording.
my pixel 6 is overheating on a daily use. battery tab in setting telling me Instagram is sucking the battery, so I guess it's because of Instagram.
pixel 5 performed much better, to be honest. the battery also doesn't last that long. it's kinda disappointing. i thought it could be because my initial install somehow went wrong, so i am actually right now backing all up to do a factory reset. But after finding this thread, i seem not to be the only one, .. struggling with the idea to send it back.
do you think they will fix it? nobody else seems to complain. i mean no review ever said anything about overheating..

i will give this a try. if this will still drain my battery and overheating the phone I will go back to my pixel 5. glad I didn't sell it that fast
My pixel 6 is overheating on 4G/5G and battery drains fast. Browsing YT, video freeze and hangs. Same scenario, but connected to wireless network, getting +8h SOT, no freeze, no heat.
Just so everyone understands.
The P6 back cover plate is a heat sink.
The back plate is lined with copper to pull heat away from the electronics.
So with this in mind, the back plate can get hot while charging or heavy use.

Yeah, this has been surprising to me. So either Google is sending an altered version or reviewers don't use the phone that much and just make the video. Literally everyone I know who got the pixel 6/pro can feel the heat within few hours

I'm kinda glad to hear I'm not the only one, but it's pretty disappointing.
I now factory reset my phone without transferring old data from my old phone, just used backup'ed data from google one.
I need to test that out. definitely changing the preferred network type from 5G to LTE helped a bit. but battery performance still seems to be horrible bad in comparison to the Pixel 5.
it seems like you can not rely on youtube reviews for smartphones nowadays :/ looking at you Marques
I do run my phones with a case so sometimes hard to tell. Only time I experience warmth is running a couple mobile games, but they did this on my Pixel 5 as well. No extreme overheating or extreme battery draining experienced.
