Question S23 Ultra has mysteriously died - Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

I've had the S23 Ultra (US, unlocked, from samsung.com) for a couple of months. I didn't root it, drop it, or splash it with water. I charged it last night, but when I woke up this morning, there was no sign of life: a black screen, no sound, no reaction to charging (even after long charging with a different charger and the cable), no reaction to a long press of Power + Vol Up/Down, and nothing detected in adb.
So I have a few questions:
Has anyone else had a similar experience with their device?
Any suggestions on how I could resurrect it?
Do you have any ideas about what might happen? Throughout the two months, I used the same old low-current (850 mA) Motorolla charger. The charger is still operational.
My current plan is to contact Samsung Support.
Any advice is appreciated! Thank you!

Have you tried using a higher capacity charger, like an official Samsung charger plugged into the wall? Have you tried a wireless charging pad to rule out an issue with the USB-C port? Samsung still uses the lowest grades soldier pennies can buy on their most premium devices.

Looks like you've tried everything basic and the phone's just dead. Could be a motherboard failure. Best to go to Samsung instead of breaking your head, as it's still under warranty. At least that's what I'd do in your position.

Try half an hour charging on wireless charger if you haven't tried yet

Saw this happen on a Note 4 back in the day. It wasn't really dead but in a weird power state. Fully charging for a few hours (even though it showed nothing) then holding power and volume up and down got it to reboot.

My old Note 4 went into this state and didnt manage to revive it with Power and Volume Up + Volume Down combo. The only sign that tells me it's not fully dead is the green notification light when I do the above combo.

About weird power states - I had Galaxy Buds Pro, which refused to take any charge - wired charging did not work and wireless either. Only way to revive it was to use wireless power sharing from the phone. Problem did not reappear later. Go figure...

You obviously charged it with faulty charger. I experienced the exact same thing. I was about to cry but then i remembered i was testing a cheap, fake Samsung charger...
Then i plugged the phone into REAL charger, waited for 2-3 minutes, phone was alive with all its glory.
Get a GENUİNE one with GENUİNE Cable, you are good to go.

Had this happen on my old s21u. Contacted support and told them I had done all the steps you did. They had me send it in for repair (was actually 2 months after warranty expired but they still agreed to repair it free of charge) and ended up changing the main board, usbc port and something else. Never happened again after (didn't change chargers or anything). So yeah, contact support that's your best bet.

It will be hard to do it if he can't even turn on the device i any way... No combination of buttons work, no way to turn it on with charger or ADB...

As its apparently either dead or in power-off state you could try to start it into download-mode by:
1. pressing Vol-Up and Vol-Down together and keep them pressed
2. plugging in a USB-cable connected to either a powered-on computer or a charger while keeping the buttons pressed
Normally it should boot into download mode (you can release the buttons after boot-up ).... Maybe this helps if the power button is broken....

Can't a power surge damage a device? It can happen either during a storm or by using a non-recommended charger. It can fry certain components, even though phones have protection.

No, it was like... My fake charger suddenly stopped working and my other phone recognized the charger + cable as a DATA TRANSFER DEVICE. It is really hard to describe the experience. No charging, my fake charger was recognized as something else..
The experience was... My S23 Ultra blacked out. I thought it was charging. Then, complete darkness. Didn't respond to power button.. Nothing. I thought it was bricked. Then i got up and found my other charger. Waited.. 10 - 15 seconds later my phone was back again. God i swear, i was shaking with sweat. It has been almost 1 month, my phone is just fine..
That day i decided to go with only geniue products. Maybe my phone protected itself by bricking itself. I really dont know.

To me it sounds like what you experienced was just an empty battery .... without juice in the battery the phone cannot do anything and the defective charger did not charge the phone while you thought it did....

Update from me: I scheduled an appointment from the Samsung site with an authorized service center (Best Buy). They checked my phone and said that they couldn't fix it if it wasn't turning on, and I had to send it to Samsung. That was unexpected.
I sent the phone to Samsung, and today I got a message that they could not reproduce the problem. I wasn't able to communicate with the service worker yet. My concern is that it could be a bad internal cable connection that restored the circuit due to the shipment vibrations. If so, and they will not check it, I could end up with a phone with a faulty connector that could die at any moment (hopefully during the warranty period).

It's also possible that being in the weird power state was fixed by simply letting the phone completely deplete of charge so that it properly turned off, recharging, then rebooting.

I had this problem on my old s7 edge. It seems that samsung never fixed this problem. The screen would stay completely black, unable to do anything until the battery completely drained. The device itself was never rooted or modified. Pretty disappointing it was never fixed.

SGS2 dead, can't unroot/wipe to return...problem?

I put my phone on the charger last night just like every other night, and awoke this morning to the screen frozen, displaying the time of 12:35am. No buttons were responding, so I pulled the battery and put it back in. It won't boot up, no lights, no nothing. Tried my spare batteries, still nothing. Tried all my chargers and nothing happens when plugged in. Dead.
Rooted, with UnNamed rom, but haven't flashed anything in months.
Is this thing dead, or can it be brought back with a jig?
EDIT: Thanks for the troubleshooting tips, but this baby is dead.dead...now I have to return it and hope that warranty stays intact...

No it was docked in the Samsung charging stand...
Pull your battery and leave it out for at least 10 minutes... go for 30. Then put your battery back in and try it. The purpose is to completely deplete all of your electronic resistors and capacitors of any power.

Reason I asked is it can make the phone overheat, it happened to me and many others on here.
I woke up to the same situation as you did and had to pull the battery and wait a bit then charge it back cause it was dead.
Ok battery out for 30+ minutes, and popped it back in - still nothing, dead as a doornail...
Should I try a jig before taking it to warranty, just to make sure that they aren't going to be able to boot it and see I rooted?
If there's anything I can do to avoid having to go buy a phone at full price to get me through the weekend, that would be awesome...going out of town in the morning and can't be without a phone...
I had that happen to a Captivate. Go to an AT&T warranty place and they can swap it.

I had this happen a few months ago. I think it has to do with how it deals with a completely dead battery. The symptom is that the phone is either completely unresponsive or will show the battery logo with a circle and then quickly power off. This is how I got around it:
-First pull out the battery, and leave the back cover open.
-Get a microUSB cable plugged into your PC at the ready, but not plugged into the phone yet. This will not work with the wall charger.
-Hold down vol down, vol up, and power, and then plug in the USB cable. In a few seconds you'll see the download mode "Custom OS" dialog with a yellow triangle.
-Do not press any buttons after this point.
-Plug in the battery, and let it sit for 10-30 minutes.
-After the battery's had enough time to get a base charge, hold the power button until the screen turns black.
-If the battery has enough charge to begin charging, you should see the full-screen battery logo with a "progress wheel" circle in the middle change to the battery with the five dots below. This means the charger is now active.
-You can now let it charge off of USB, or move it to the wall charger for a faster charge.
Again, this is what's worked for me. Post here if you are having any luck with this method.
I have a Captivate that died on me in the exact same fashion two days ago. I'm deciding whether to wait a few months for new releases or just getting a SGSII. ATT is offering it for $10 with a contract renewal.
Since my phone is out of warranty, is there any other way to get it replaced?

Surprisingly I had the same EXACT situation occur as the OP. I set my phone down charged via USB last night and next morning I woke up to an extrememly luke warm phone with nothing turning on, it was a blank screen and I for sure thought the battery was dead...
Ended up at Radioshack in search for a spare battery to use, but the employee's were assholes and wouldn't let me borrow one from out of their SGS2 displays, so I decided at this point to just find a battery online and be phone-less for a few days.
Thanks to pokey for this little gameplan he had written out, , it appears there still is life in my lil' R2D2... at least it appears to be.
Edit: Yep it worked, just have to wait for it to charge now--those who have this problem follow pokey's steps and this should direct you on the right path. Good luck!!

Unfortunately this didn't work for me, thanks though, had high hopes and tried it several times. I picked up a jig and no life with that either. Dead.
Oh well...warranty phone is supposed to arrive today, can't wait to take back this WP7 abomination (had to try it).
So since this phone is verified as dead now, is there anything to worry about in sending it back through warranty since I'm unable to wipe/unroot it?
This scares the crap out of me since I just got my phone. Good tips to try if it does happen.
Can it be concluded that it has something to do with leaving the charger on it after it is fully charged? Maybe something with the voltage regulator(?) that tells the charger to stop charging when the battery is full.
I have dewalt drills that I swear lose life if you leave them on the charger for long periods of time consistently (even though they are to stop charging when the battery is full). Whats weird about these problems is that it killed the phone too, not just the battery.

Yes you should worry, at&t might not be able to get it up and running but Samsung will, and when they get the device up and running they will see the root & rom so expect a very large phone bill in 1-2 months.

Well that's just friggin' great
My sgsii died on me while rooted and I swapped it out for warranty and did not incure a bill from AT&T or Samsung. It's been about 6 months now so I'm pretty sure they just used it for spare parts.
The funny part of the story is my current sgsii died the other day won't turn on at all. Got my jig today and that doesn't work either. I will try pokeys method and hopefully it works for me.

While you could be correct, I don't see Samsung sinking the labor time into looking that closely. I'm guessing they just hook it up to something that'll push the firmware, test functionality, and send it out as a refurb.
I could very well be wrong, but when you get hundreds/thousands of dead devices like they do, its more cost effective to just keep it simple and move onto the next.
I've never returned a device, stock or customized, so this is just my guess based on experience working with a large corporation.

Kindle Fire HDX 7 No boot/screen/power

Ok, so I've crawled everywhere for the last few days to try and see if anybody else has had this issue, but alas, nobody has.
So my device was purchased in Nov 2013, out of warrany. No luck there with a replacement.
Last week I was watching a show, low battery, it powered down. No biggie, just plug it in and let it charge. But it refused to do anything at all, even after charging for 24 hours. No power, no screen, nothing. Held the power button. Nothing. No noise, no lights, nothing.
Contacted Tech Support and they sent me one of their 9w chargers and said to try that. Got it, plugged it in overnight, again, nothing. Held the power button for 40 seconds, nothing. Tried it while plugged in, nothing.
Contacted Tech Support again and they said nothing they can do other than offer me $20 off a new device. No thanks.
I plugged the unit into my desktop and it blooped that a new device was connected, and in the device manager I have the "QHSUSB_BULK" device. This is a totally stock, nothing new, not even developer options enabled (when it had power)
Is there anything to be done with the device at this point?
Again, no power, no screen, no lights, nothing.
Unresponsive.

Probably not, sorry.
There is a reason why Android in general pops up request about battery charging 2 times before it shutdown itself. One is about ideal state for charging modern Li-ion battery , which is around 10 - 15 % its capacity, second is about a minimal safe level for Li-ion battery, which is cca 5%, and under this (believe or not) some bad things can happen, including internal storage media corruption while writing something and not enough juice left in the process of shutdown for finishing it...
I don't know for real what happened in your case, but I have seen this type of posts about android shutdown because of no juice left in battery and after charging device was dead in other forums for some other devices...
My first tablet was Asus Transformer tf101, which had extra battery in the keyboard, and manual clearly stated, that its capacity must not drop under 3%, otherwise it can't be recharged properly and must be replaced...
So IMO people risks every time when they ignore this request for charging battery, and I must admit I too let my Apollo shutdown 2 times in last 2 weeks because I was too lazy to connect it to charger... but after this post I will definitely rethink next time...

Sounds like you have done your homework. Unfortunately, gut tells me you have a defective hw component. Could be the battery, regulator or some other power circuit. If you have a USB3 port (and cable) try plugging into that for awhile. It might just put enough charge on the battery to permit some type of response combined with the higher power output of a USB3 port. In my experience a USB2 port does not provide enough juice to power high draw devices with a crippled battery. It's a long shot a best but if you can get a response and diagnostics confirm it's the battery you could consider replacing that (no easy task) to recover your device.
Another option is to snag an inexpensive USB current meter (examples here and here) to see if the device is actually drawing power while on charge. If the reading is close to zero you likely have a charge circuit problem which can't be easily remedied. A bad battery would still draw some current...just wouldn't hold a charge. Note these gizmos can also be used to identify a bad cable, bad charger or combination of the two for virtually any USB device. You'd be amazed how many crappy cables are out there that severely restrict charge rates. But that's another matter ...
Sorry I couldn't provide a more optimistic response.
So maybe try replacing the battery?
ifixit says they're kinda hard to replace, but for $50 off Amazon it might be worth it vs the $150 they quoted me for a replacement tablet.
I've had a few devices shut down on me like this (I try my hardest not to, but we all fail sometimes) and I've just never run into this issue before.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said above, I charged it with their charger, 3 of my own, my USB 3.0 port on my desktop, all with multiple cords. So no luck there. I've kind of been figured it's just EOL for this thing unfortunately and I just don't think I'm gonna bother with it at this point. USB on the desktop recognizes it, but nothing further.
Time to mount it on the wall I guess lol. Thanks for all the responses and confirming what I suspected, it helps to know that others think that my conclusion wasn't premature.

Tesco Hudl 2 not switching on or charging

So, I had my Hudl 2 for about 2 months but my mother took it abroad for about 5 weeks. It ran out of charging on the first day after which they attempted to put it on charging but it was completely flat and not working. I thought it was because we used a different charger abroad so when we returned I put it back onto its original charger but it still didn't switch on. It has now been almost a month but it isn't switch on.
Is there a way to revive it or should we try and get it repaired?

My suggestion is go for a service centre as I am unable to find the answer for your device, might be chances of getting battery replaced
Press and Hold Power and volume up button for 15 seconds release volume button and press power again for another 15 seconds connect mains wall charger power charging light should come on leave it charging for about 15 to 20 minutes. all done
Do you know what kind of charger was used when it stopped working? It's probably worth making sure the specs (ex: Voltage) were exactly the same as the stock one. If not, we can pretty safely assume it's a hardware problem.
If you have verified the charger is OK but the device charging light simply refuses to come on, have you considered the possibility the USB charging port is damaged?
Replacement ports are available from Amazon for a very modest outlay and replacement is demonstrated on YouTube.
Just search for "replace Hudl 2 charing port" on YouTube" using any reputable search engine. (the forum wont let me post the link.)
I managed it so it can't be that difficult. However I found it a lot easier to open up using a "Stanley Knife" than they did on the video.

Green charging screen of death?

Hi all,
My phone cut out at about 10% battery charge earlier and wouldn't turn back on. I thought it was probably just bad battery stats. But now I'm home, even after an hour on charge (and 30 mins on another charger) the phone won't turn on. It also shows up as an unrecognised device in device manager.
Whats weird is that when I first plug the charger in, rather than seeing the blue battery logo, I see an unfamiliar green battery logo as attached.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? (Tried booting with the volume up and volume down buttons held)
It's also come at quite a frustrating time, I may not be able to reply until Sunday night as I'm off camping in the sticks for the weekend.

Sadly that didn't work.
The battery appears to now be taking a charge (300mA/h according to a USB multimeter), but I haven't been able to even get SP flash tools to recognise the handset sadly.

That is the conclusion I'm coming to, sadly there doesn't seem to be a UK stockist of the battery yet, but I guess in the mean time I can see if the seller will honour any form of warranty on the product. For now, I'm back on my old G3 and it doesn't even begin to compare. I loved my Elephone.

I have the same problem a while ago with the green thing logo while charging , I even try it on wireless charger but it has the same thing with the green logo of battery ...but luckily it charge normally with blue logo
I have seen this on my screen a few times when I ****ed my bootloader during flashing. Device ended up being semi-bricked. I could not flash via SPtools because my device didn't get recognized. I was able to fix it luckily!
Hi all, sorry for the delay in responding.
So, the first problem was the battery. You need to charge it beyond 3.8v I think to get the phone to turn on, probably better to get it to 4v so you have enough charge stored to use the phone. The phone can't charge the battery below a certain threshold (around 3.7v) so you have to remove the battery and use a lithium-ion battery charger (any phone battery charger), these are available for about £2 on ebay.
In my phone the USB port had also stopped working for data transfer. I tried changing the board with the USB port on to no avail.
I replaced everything but the screen in the end to get it working.
Are/were you on stock OS or had you replaced it with another rom? Just for a bit more clarity of the problem.

Software was fine when I last checked, running CM12.1 and no issues.
Anyone see a similar issue and know if the battery is likely to have failed or something more fundamental?
I'm ordering a pogo pin charger to see if that works, had a couple in the past but the connecting wires in the stand broke.

I've tried most chargers and I have a lot of them, including original chargers for Z3 and Z4. Even trickling on a slow charger should recharge after 24 hours but nothing.
Wish I'd remembered to keep it charged, can't even get a bootloader up.

Press the volume up button and power button together for 10 seconds. This should cause your device to vibrate 3 times and then show the battery charging screen.

weird dude.as far I know,li-on batteries need to fully discharged once in 30 charges.I made it once (it closed from battery) but nothing weird happened to me.I am always on KK 4.4.4
or u can try press the tiny reset button near to usb port.here says that nothing is being erased.

Good news! Thanks to everyone here who convinced me to persevere and not sell this tablet as broken!
For 4 days I have been charging the tablet and trying power+vol button combinations a couple of times each day and finally, on day 4, I was able to first get a red led. After the led went out about 10 mins later I tried vol+power again and got the emergency battery graphic plus red led. Led went out after ten mins again and had to use vol+power. Seemed to go a bit strange at that point and charging halted. Swapped chargers and waited.
Next time was the trick, got red led, it went out and I was able to get the normal, smaller charging graphic. Let it get a couple of % for safety and hit power, resulting in a full boot. Tablet is booted at 4% and charging OK.

Exactly as per above, keep repeating the power & vol- sequence and putting on charger for a few hours. Exact brand of charger doesn't seems to matter, the one it worked on was a no-name two-socket UK plug charger from Amazon. Obviously a 2A+ charger will help. The cable used was a generic Samsung 1m (3ft) lead.
Just repeat the process and leave it on the charger in between. I'd recommend not charging a unit like this unattended in case the battery is damaged and there's a battery failure, I've seen a lipo fire and they're ugly.

Dude glad you got it working. I love mine but i have it rooted. hoping that the latest stamina battery return update is rootable
