Question How do I recover a deleted sub-folder & removed from recycle bin when I don't know the sub-folder name? - Windows 11

A folder got thrown into the recycle bin in error & the recycle bin has been cleared today. I didn't even know the folder was gone till I went to access it & could no longer find it. I have searched the entire drive thinking maybe it got moved. Nope. It is Gone!
The problem is, that I do NOT know the name of this sub-folder
I have been attempting to recover the folder & all its contents using MS Windows File Recovery App. However, I have only been able to guess at the sub-folder name. I do know that this sub-folder contains only "xdoc" files.
Ex: C:Users\my-user-name\my-folder\unknown-folder\*.xdoc
I have simply entered on "Windows File Recovery App" at the command prompt:
winfr c: d: /n Users\my-user-name\my-folder\guess-this unknown-folder\*.xdoc
my-user-name = my user name
my-folder = a sub folder
unknown-folder = the sub-folder where all my deleted stuff resides, only I don't know the name of it.
guess-this unknown-folder = the various possible iterations of said unknown sub-folder.
I have also tried this on the command prompt, completely eliminating the sub-folder name. I thought it possible that the App would simply get ALL items including the sub-folder AND it's files.
winfr c: d: /n Users\my-user-name\my-folder\*.xdoc
FAIL
But even though there ARE "xdoc" files in that other sub-folder, the Windows File Recovery App ONLY searches that last folder called out and NOT any sub-folders. ie: Apparently it ONLY searches for files
I have been guessing at possible names of this sub-folder only to come up empty.
PS> I have also searched download.cnet.com/ for a free-bee utility that might solve my problem, only to come up empty.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Q1: Is there a way to FIND the name of the sub-folder after it has been removed from the recycle bin?
OR
Q2: How can I get my files back without knowing the name of that last sub-folder?
OR
Q3: is there ANOTHER way to recover an unknown folder w/o buying some utility?

If you haven't enabled the File History feature on your Windows 11 system, my guess is you have lost.

I see that "File History" requires a 2nd partition or drive. Currently, I only have the "C" drive & have no idea how to create a "D" partition.
So, you are correct - No File History means I lost them. But I would like to be prepared next time and have a "D" drive available.

You at any time can partition the C drive via

WhatsApp - No Key?

I want to merge some WhatsApp databases. I have followed this guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/help/how-key-whatsapps-crypt-files-message-t3364700
but It didn't work for me (no backup windows was opened, tried on Windows as well on Linux) and then I found that I can decrypt the crypt12 database of WhatsApp by using a key, which is supposed to be located under:
/data/data/com.whatsapp
provided that the phone is rooted, which applies in my case. But when I navigate to this folder there is no key, but only a link: lib -> /data/app/com.whatsapp-2/lib/arm. A folder only with files with a .so extension...
I have searched starting from the root with different file managers but there is no key!
So I don't have one or what is going? Is there any way to merge my databases?

Using the es file explorer,
I can find all the crypt files under whatsapp/databases (non root folder) and the key store file under /data/data/com.whatsapp/shared_prefs/
Not sure of what you are seeking but maybe this is the probable file
Regards,
milkyway3
Thanks for the quick response!
The database folder is there, no problem. Under /data/data/com.whatsapp there is only one linked folder named lib, nothing else. I have now also used ES File Explorer to verify.

EDIT:
I thought that my phone was already verified but apparently it wasn't. As soon as I recovered an older backup from google drive and verified, I could find the key in the files folder. Although that didn't helped me a lot since I couldn't restore an older backup. Seems that the key was changed.
WhatsApp Messenger 2.23.4.79
I can't find key file anymore.. /Android/data/com.whatsapp is empty, contains only cache folder.
/Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp contains Databases and Backups folders, but no key files.
And backup are created in sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases folder as crypt12, crypt14 files

Extract content from android backup

Hello everyone...
I find the phone with the non-working tuch ..
From the recoveri mode I managed to make a complete backup of the phone on sd and generated these 3 files:
userdata_20160101_000035.backup
userdata_20160101_000035.backup1
userdata_20160101_000035.backup2
is there a possibility to extract the content ???
I would be interested in contacts.
I state the phone is a Majestic
Thank you.
recovering contacts is not easy. you need SQLite Forensic Explorer to view the database file. the database is separated in many different tables, each table has a column "raw_contact_id" which contain always the unique id-no of contacts (one table contains phone nos, another table contains names, etc... you must query tables by id).
once you have extracted the backup, the file "contacts.db" is located "/data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/"
from the backup I made, how do I extract the contacts.db file ??
remove the checksum(s) and merge the files. you need linux
don't be scared, i will explain you step by step. first step: do you have linux? if yes, press CTRL + ALT + T this is the terminal where you can do it. if no, please download unetbootin and prepare a bootable usb stick. you can run ubuntu on your pc without installing. don't hesitate to ask if you need help regarding unetbootin

finally I was able to understand something of the terminal in place ..
I move to the folder where the files are, I open the terminal I enter the commands and I generate this error .. why do you think ???

"dd" does not accept wildcards. press <TAB> instead of * for word completion. you must type the full file name. remove the stars in this example code.
edit: i will answer in this thread, because this are linux basics. so lets open a "beginner" thread here, and leave the other thread open for more advanced questions. finally, your goal is to extract contacts, what we should not discuss in main thread

FIX: Un-allowed DMA capable bus/device(s) detected

Credit goes to this posting:
https://superuser.com/questions/1345848/un-allowed-dma-capable-bus-devices-detected
I've edited it to make the process easier. It helped me solve the issue. Of course, use at your own risk and wear a helmet if you're going to tinker in the registry.
White-list the device
Open Regedit
Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DmaSecurity\AllowedBuses
Grant yourself access to modify the registry key
Right-click AllowedBuses and go to Permissions
Make yourself the owner
Press Advanced
Next to Owner, make note of what it says (mine said SYSTEM)
Next to Owner, press Change
Enter your username (eg your Microsoft account email address)
Press OK
Grant yourself access
Press Add
Enter your username (eg your Microsoft account email address)
Press OK
Select your user
Tick Full Control
Press OK
Under AllowedBuses, create a new String Value
Run the following PS script which generates a .reg file (with all found PCI devices) in tmp directory and then imports it silently
Code:
$tmpfile = "$($env:TEMP)\AllowBuses.reg"
'Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\DmaSecurity\AllowedBuses]'`
| Out-File $tmpfile
(Get-PnPDevice -InstanceId PCI* `
| Format-Table -Property FriendlyName,InstanceId -HideTableHeaders -AutoSize `
| Out-String -Width 300).trim() `
-split "`r`n" `
-replace '&SUBSYS.*', '' `
-replace '\s+PCI\\', '"="PCI\\' `
| Foreach-Object{ "{0}{1}{2}" -f '"',$_,'"' } `
| Out-File $tmpfile -Append
regedit /s $tmpfile
Start removing added entries via regedit one by one while refreshing system info page and checking which entry makes it incompatible again
*Fun fact: Running the script again re-populates the list without duplicating/missing entries
You should find at least one entry that re-enables the System Information message. I had 2. (See photo below).
Keep ONLY the one(s) that trigger the incompatibility message
Make sure to remove the user account that took ownership of the registry folder. I did this by right clicking Allowed Busses-> advanced and deleting my account. No need to do anything else except confirm the original owner (System in my case) has been restored. Be warned that this may NOT be the correct way to restore ownership.

This, unfortunately, does not work for me. After running the PowerShell script, I get entries added to AllowedBuses, but I still get the "Un-allowed DMA capable bus/device(s) detected" error.
The problem seems to be that I have multiple instances of some unallowed devices. When I run the Get-PnPDevice manually, I see everything, but you can only add a single instance of any given friendly name to the AllowedBuses key in the registry. For example, I have 12 PCI-to-PCI Bridge entries that have 5 different device ID's between them.
I haven't figured out how to whitelist everything I need to whitelist yet, and it seems impossible since I have multiple device ID's with the same friendly name that need to be added.

Multiple instances of the same device can be fixed by appending 2, 3, 4 etcetera to the friendly names to make them unique.
I have five "PCI Express Root Port" devices with the same name but different device-id's, and this trick fixed the "Un-allowed DMA capable bus/device(s) detected" error for me.

Question is the pixel 6 and android 12 deleting files to clean up my device?

i download a lot of files. and some i don't look at for weeks at a time after downloading.
lately Ive been finding directory's empty and files missing. some are documents, others are back ups of APK files, no pictures have gone missing however.
i can find no option in settings for auto cleanup, all that is turned off in my user apps under permissions.
i have never had this issue before but this is my first android over v9
Stupid question do you have google files installed as that could be the culprit

its set to not remove permissions and clean up space, i hardly ever use it so ill disable it and keep checking, and ill remove its permissions first.
Not sure then sorry not much help
I remembered about this and then re read your post so not sure to be honest I tho6was this then realized your photos not getting deleted
well that just proves there is an automagicly service that deletes things on the pixel.
the question is could it be malfunctioning and deleting things it should not and without notifying the user?
you would think they would use a recycle bin so the user could verify if the files should be deleted.

none of that exists on my device. and i cant find a setting for "safe storage"
i hope it is not on by defaut and only can be turned off with a vague command
its something to look into.
files are definitely being deleted without me being involved.
8 files between only 24 hours to 5 days old. the folders are there but empty.
i have no cleaning software installed, nothing that should ever delete anything automatically. this is very annoying.
luckily i set up a nightly backup.
after switching to a custom rom and installing every app i had before i have had NOT ONE file be deleted on my device since.
there is no excuse for files being deleted behind the users back.
Are u sure that this is Files by Google?
Are the pictures backed up to Google Photos?
Never had an issue with Files by Google.
Cheers
Tom
i dont know whati s doing it. but the OEM rom (with updates) deleted over 200+ files off my device in 5 months. and left the directories that held the files empty.
some were images, some were epubs, some were apks files.
i used a sync app to backup the files, i don't use google services.
Running GrapheneOS updated to latest 13 and never had one file missing from my phone. Flashed phone with GrapheneOS at first power up before SIM went in back when I got it.
