Unlocked Hero only available in white! - Hero, G2 Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As all the pre order Hero's I've seen so far, are white, I thought I'd emails some suppliers about unlocked black ones.
The replies I'm receiving seem to indicate the unlocked sim-free Hero's will only be available in white (UK).
Why do they do they come up with these crazy restrictions? Do they deliberately try to limit their sales?
I despair sometimes
Anyone seen unlocked Black versions advertised?
Regards,
Glenn

Handtec.co.uk do it in brown, but their release date is 3rd Quarter 2009, not the July date so not sure if they are going to release on the same date or a bit later on...

nicelad_uk, thank's for that. Looks promising. Technicaly, 3rd quarter has already arrived, so maybe it's comming close to the 21st being touted by most retailers. This is the only store I've seen with a sim-free other than white. I'll contact Handtec for clarification.
Thanks again.

Glenn

Thank you for your email
HTC will be launching the White version only in the UK, but the date has moved again to end of July/Early August
The Brown version or Black graphite could come out but go to europe or to a network - orange,O2 etc

HI Guys,
I`ve ordered my Hero from Handtec.co.uk 2 weeks ago and had a chance to speak personaly with the Sales Manager. I`ve order a brown edition and the sales manager confurmed that there is confirmation for delivery date which is 21.07.2009.
Here is a copy of our Skype conversation:
[13.7.2009 г. 19:39:56] Ciki says: is there any changes of the official delivery date?
[13.7.2009 г. 19:40:12] Ciki says: as i remember it was 21.07
[13.7.2009 г. 19:40:21] Ciki says: any changes so far?
[13.7.2009 г. 19:41:08] ********** says: no
[13.7.2009 г. 19:41:11] ********** says: this date is confirmed
[13.7.2009 г. 19:41:18] ********** says: i will have stock on this date

Hi josifbg,
Please let us know if this turns up.
As you can see from my previous post, I'm being told that the brown version will not be available unlocked (I've also had a similar response from HTC direct).
So i'll be very interested to see if you do receive your unlocked brown Hero.
Regards,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,
Well we`ll wait to see what color they`ll deliver ....
I expect the delivery on 23.07.2009 as they will ship it on 22.07.2009 (1 day delivery by Air - Fedex).
Crossing fingers.....

Hope this sheds some light, all correct as of launch date:
White - UK Independant channel only, so online etailers, shops etc.
Brown and Pink - Carphone Warehouse only. Not sure if will be sold connected only or if they'll do it sim free.
Graphite - Orange UK Only
Hero looks likely to launch (very) end of July / early August

Well My order from Handtec.co.uk is Sim Free......

Bad News... Just spoke with Handtec sales manager and he told me that the release date will be in August.
[14:17:52] ********* says: no date
[14:17:59] ********* says: early August
[14:18:45] Ciki says: includes handtec?
[14:19:30] ********* says: Yes
[14:19:36] ********* says: we are registered Htc DEALERS
[14:19:49] ********* says: Such as Amazon
[14:22:29] Ciki says: last time you told me that delivery date 21.07 is confirmed looks like the delivery is changed again ?
[14:23:50] ********* says: yes it has
[14:24:04] Ciki says: Oh my....
[14:24:21] ********* says: Its coz google are doing a retest on the device
[14:24:57] Ciki says: ok but how long we have to wait for the delivery?
[14:25:17] Ciki says: i mean.. this is unbelievable...
[14:25:47] Ciki says: and looks like there is no date... and no body knows....
[14:33:32] ********* says: thats true
[14:33:48] ********* says: but if no one has them then theres nothing to really worry about
30min later he told me 1st week of August....

josifbg, I don't know if youv'e seen the latest handtec website update, but with regard to the brown version it says.... "This version will NOT launch in the UK, please refer to the White version"
Here is the page...
http://www.handtec.co.uk/search.php?xSearch=htc+hero&update.x=0&update.y=0&update=Search
Strange thing is, that if you click through to the main page, they still say taking preorders. Me thinks left hand don't know what right hand is doing.

Oh My.... anyone know where i can find the Brown version or any other color different than White?

Just canceled the pre-order from Handtec....
I can`t believe they`ve actually charged my CC for something which can be delivered after 1 month for example.. and in the actual delivery date 02.08.2009 to say " We are sorry but the reference order xxxxx HTC Hero Brown color is not availible and will not be available from UK so ... yo have 2 options: Cancel the order or go with the White edition....."

I recieved my HTC Hero Brown yesterday - ordered from Pixmania which is based in France. Europe was awarded the the Brown unlocked version. Ordered Wednesday, arrived Friday. When setting up the phone, gave me two language options, French or English.. I know which version I chose
Very impressed.

Hi amczee,
Well spotted. I missed that one. I ended up buying a brown one from mobiles.co.uk (£79 + 12 months @ £30 for an Orange contract - £40 cashback from Topcashback = £400 with free delivery) so ended up paying £400 over 12 months. I'm not using the Orange sim as I've got one of the O2 'simplicity' sims for £19.58 per month which gives 800 mins, 1200 texts, free voicemail & unlimited data (unlike Orange/T-Mobile 500MB/1GB)
I don't need a lot of minutes/texts so was going to go for the no-contract (30 day rolling contract) version of the 'simplicity', but as O" are offering £100 cashback on 12 month sim only contracts, I went for that instead.
Ordered my Hero on Wednesday evening, received Friday morning. All in all, Im happy.
This is my first android phone, so I'm having an educational whale of a time

'Software problem'

I am a regular buyer of XDAs and phoned O2 (select) today to order another one. However, they told me sale of the XDA is on hold at the moment due to a 'software problem'. They could not give me more details on this problem, or a date when the XDAs will be available again. Can anyone shed light onto this matter?
Thanks

Toshiba TG01 replacement question

Hi,
I bought a Toshiba TG01 from Orange on 19th Feb and have unlocked it to the O2 network. The call quality is crap and it freezes... Is it true that I can get a replacement phone from Orange with my original receipt?
Kind Regards,
Oliver

Pay as you go? If so, you only get a 1 month warranty from orange, then its down to the Toshiba warranty. Have you tried a rom with radio 1600, because that solved a lot of my call quality problems

Nope, 12 month warranty from Orange. Under the Sale of Goods act, Orange cannot defer support to the manufacturer
for first 28 days return to orange shop. After this they exchange replacement handset at your address. Arrange through customer sevices. The courier picks up shell only (no battery, back or box) so it is not checked for simlock. However I would advise you to top up and/or use the orange sim you purchased with the phone before calling customer services.

[Q] Has anyone got a phone from Orange UK yet?

Has anyone yet received a phone from either an Orange shop or via their website/head office?
And if so how was the "bloatware" situation, what is your rom details and was there any orange branding on the device itself?
its available to buy through a new contract, but is still comming soon as an upgrade feature :/
i hope to get mine through at the end of the week, unfortunatly, just been the victim of card fraud, so have to wait for the bank....i will keep peeps posted
I actually get mine tomorrow so can look then, I was just interested to see if others had one already
I do know (from what the executive office told me today) that they have had 2 deliveries now but both have been very very small, first batch sold out in minutes and second batch was expected to do the same, thankfully I had one saved for me as a priority customer.

I get mine tomorrow, will let you know.
Just curious, wouldn't you root it and get a cleaner rom anyway?
I DO know that the phone does not come with NFC chip
Orange had no clue, so I called Samsung and eventually got the answer that only the USA version has the chip (which we know is not true, but suffice to say,the Orange one does not)

Yes I will, but just wondered anyway.
Some people are currently investigating if the phones do in-fact have NFC included just software disabled. Early signs indicate that they may include the chip.

Yeah, I was thinking it would... partly to explain why Orange took a month longer than Vodafone to supply the phone. Also Orange have some initiative with some bank and another phone of theirs that has NFC, so thought SGS2 should have it too...
Mark.
I upgraded through Carphone warehouse a couple of weeks ago. Mainly because, at the time, Orange couldn't confirm when they would have it. I got a sim unlocked non-Orange branded SGS II! But it's not difficult to debrand and unlock the phone anyway...
I picked up one from the Orange shop in Kilburn London last Saturday. Didn't expect them to have one but asked the manager of the shop anyway who said that there was a delivery just made and he'll go check.
I was delighted when he said there was ONE delivered, yes just one? What's the point in that?
Anyhoo I'm a happy chappy ,there was a lot of Orange bloatware on it and sorry I can't remember the firmware as I flashed Lite'ning rom on it as soon as possible to get rid of all the Orange crap.
Admittedly I took out a second contract to get this phone but I did get it from the carphone warehouse on orange and my handset is unbranded and unlocked. I will never go to an orange shop to upgrade ever again, no orange branding is great!
Well Orange somehow screwed up my order (something about system thinking they had more handsets than they actually did) so my order was processed but there was no handset to send out..so I have to wait for them to restock.
Hey Lenny, picked mine up from my local Orange store in W-S-M this week
I ordered one last Sunday, just been told stock arriving Friday.
Could somebody with an orange SGS2 have a look and see what free ram there is at stadby please? Just wondered if the orange bloatware affected the amount of free ram available.
Thanks
Ian
Just got of the phone with orange, 5000 phones turned up today, once everyone is checked the will be in stock after the back orders are filled.
Looking at the 22 for them to be sent out !

Hello,
I got my Lumia 800, and it's charging at the moment. But when I bought the phone from Amazon through FGS Trading, the box it came with has a sticker on it in German. It says:
"Neuwertig, gebrauchtes
Ihre Qualitätskontrolle 35"
Gebrauchtes means used...so does it mean I bought a new phone, but was given a used one?

But why is Gebrauchtes also printed on the label?
For me this sounds like it's not new. Looks more like a refurbished one that has gone through quality control to assure it's like new.
Maybe Nokia support would be able to tell using the phones IMEI?

That's what I'm thinking. I contacted the seller and we're going to sort this out.
At this point, it doesnt even matter right now because the phone won't turn on anyway Spent eight hours yesterday doing every trick/button combination possible.
I'll take it to the Microsoft store to see if they can do something.

Try a Nokia store, or you can arrange a repair if your phone has a warranty (which it should have). Check Nokia care online.

Unfortunately, the U.S. doesn't have Nokia stores. I went to the Microsoft store and they weren't able to do anything.
I've contacted both Nokia and the Amazon seller. We'll have to see how this works out. I waited all of my spring break for a phone that won't turn on!
At least I'm still very satisfied with how well it's built. It's like an Alfa Romeo. Won't work, but take one look at it and all the negatives will be forgotten.
Meanwhile, I'll live with my HD2.

Of course, I'm waiting for Alfa to make its return to the U.S.
I tried doing a search, and this popped up:
"Device was not designed for the US market:
We do not have the capability to repair devices that were not designed for the US market. Please check the warranty information that was included with your device and/or please contact your point of purchase. If you purchased the device in the US and you determine that your device came with a US warranty, please contact Nokia Customer Care at 1-888-665-4228 for information. Please include a copy of your proof of purchase that confirms the device was purchased in the United States and a copy of the in box US warranty documentation when you send your device in for repair."
It makes sense, since my particular unit was imported from T-mobile in Germany by the seller. Maybe I should've shelled out the extra $50 for the Amazon-certified international one.

The Lumia 800 is sold in the U.S. at Microsoft Stores, but it only comes in a bundle with speakers and headphones for $800 (about £500). Amazon sells the international unlocked version for $550. As far as I know, they're the same version, except Microsoft won't sell the phone separately.

So where can I buy one in the UK?

I want a handset only as I'm on Three but I was just wondering where I can get the handset? I cannot find any info anywhere for anything other than EE which suck with their crazy prices and low data caps. Also if I manage to get one will it support Three's eventual 4G release as they will be using 1800mhz?
Thanx.
Id be interested in picking up a yellow one.. My local phones4u had a demo one out but knew nothing about it :S
I emailed Stephen Elop directly about this, and to my surprise - he responded, all be it very vague.
I aired my concerns about the limited sale on EE - and asked if there were any options coming for SIM-FREE. I understand why his answer was vague, as I could be anyone at the end of the day.
But it doesn't look good for those of us wanting one without signing an EE contract in the UK anytime soon..
I'll just not buy one then, their loss :\
I have a yellow 920 on pre-order that due to arrive tomorrow with Phone4U. However, there is a lot of confusion about if these handsets are locked or not. I really don't want to use Orange / T-Mobile / EE as I am currently happy with Vodafone.
So funny how Nokia have released their best Smart Phone yet and most people cannot buy it. Firstly it is EE exclusive and they've said it will be until at least next year, secondly all handset only phones are locked to EE as well and thirdly EE prices are stupid and offer barely any data.
I would have been quite interested but WTF are Nokia doing?
I saw the Lumia 920 in Phones4U yesterday. Lovely looking phone but Nokia messed up. Personally for me I waited long enough for this phone to come out but with all the shenanigans around it I couldn't wait any longer. I hope you guys are happy with it. I went with the Note2 in the end. A truly amazing phone!
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda app-developers app
Madness isnt it.
Quite fancied this phone to pair up with a Windows 8 setup, but they are making it impossible to obtain one.
It's the only WP8 of the bunch with a stand out feature.
Here in Germany where I live you can buy the Lumia 920 factory unlocked no problem.
This is where I ordered mine for example: https://www.handytick.de/handys/nokia/nokia-lumia-920-black.htm
They say that they ship outside of Germany on prior request only but maybe you can try to contact them and ask if they can ship the phone over to the UK.
Here is their email address so that you don't have to try navigating that German website: [email protected]
Hope that helps.

p.s. I'm in no way associated with that website nor I'm getting any kind of money from them for "promoting" their site - I'm just trying to help
This is nuts. I fear that Nokia with the only 4G WP8 device on the UK market and with a killer camera & touchscreen are going to really muck up this launch.
For starters, if I'm paying £460 for a phone I don't want to be limited to a Red or Yellow one! I'm 6 months into a 24 month contract (on a GS3) and want to go back to WP. I want to future proof myself so 4G is a must but I want a phone I can sell easily if & when the next toy comes along. A Red Lumia locked to EE is none of those!!! I really do hope Phone4U will be selling unlocked phones and not just Red & Yellow one's. Otherwise I'll sadly end up sticking to my Galaxy S3
A bright red or yello phone just says 'mug me'

I can't deff confirm it because I haven't received mine yet but since the auction on eBay where I bought it from (which was from that store) said that it is SIM free I'm pretty that it will be.
Besides that it's pretty normal here in Germany that you can buy almost all phones SIM free.

This one on German eBay is a little bit more expensive but it says that it can be shipped within the entire EU (expect some excluded locations, but Poland isn't listed there):

It also says that it's SIM free.
This was just the first one I came across when I tried to find a dealer that would ship to Poland though, there might be a cheaper one around too.
Just search for Lumia 920 on German eBay.de or search for sthg like "Lumia 920 bestellen" on Google and you might find some more offers.
If you can't find out what you need using Google Translator just post it here and I'll be happy to help with reading German.

will EE unlock it if you buy?
just wondering whether you could ask EE to unlock the phone for you, once you've purchased it and signed up to a contract?
