[MODS] Step up and identify yourselves. - Android

I'm just curious who these seasoned devs are in here. I'm trying to see where this is going cause right now I see two paths: a really useful resource or a super duper kangkit/get rich quick scheme.
Until then I'm off to cook some food, not a rom.

I'm envisioning a multipurpose/variety thread. The likes of which never before seen. A thread so historically consequential, that the once elusive trade magic, some only hinted of in the fables of yesteryear, will be exposed, explained and made the standard. Oh yes, I'm with you when you say, "sounds much too important for just one dev to endure singlehandedly!" Which is why I bring you, the thread which will overclock your kernels 'till they pop ............................................................TOP ROM N' COOKING WITH YOUR HOSTS, DUDE AND KING!!
My mom says hi

I'd really like to see this become an active source of information between developers. A place where even some of the best can learn a thing or two.
Anyway... stepping up:
NPRussell
Creator of the various VillainROMs on the HTC Hero, capable of more than file moving and winzip, luckily.
I'll help out in here as much as possible to help get things moving!
@Cyanogen; Great introductory thread

I'm no mod, but I do have some priveleges.
Let me introduce myself.
Most of you won't know me for my efforts on Winmo i guess, since this is Android Chef Central. I worked with the best guys on creating a driver(pack) for Windows based MSM7XXX devices.
Now, I'm helping out XDA as much as I can.
Pleased to meet.

I am jcarrz1, an activist in the community and a fairly basic rom modder, etc. that looks for unique roms/bases and ideas for my creations.
not anything special, mind you.

im jamezelle(James L.) I dev for vogue-android, the eris and motodroid.

Hey man, your graphics driver packs were more than appreciated for my Diamond / Touch Pro / Touch HD ROMs! They made a difference.
BTW ... I'm dsixda, who got his life stolen away after starting on the Windows Mobile 6.x Onyx ROMs for the Elf/Elfin ;-)
Now that I'm on Android I really want to get back to doing actual development work. (I don't think writing Mortscripts for my ROMs count, do they?) However, the stock Android ROMs in my opinion are useful enough for my day-to-day activities... I'm just a file pushing guy for now ;-)

I am charansingh. Just learnt how to build cyanogen mod from source, Have been building overclocked kernels for personal use lately just for testing. Now digging into cyanogen mod source to see if i can see something interesting to learn, edit and make something new. Lately i edited setting in the camera to allow unlimited video record time kind of. And will be doing more as a get time to do it

Keep it clean guys!

Hey thanks man. I'm glad i've helped out people with my packs. I'm new to Android so i won't be much of a help in the graphics department, but I hope to help out as much as I can to get the best out of our snapdragon chipsets.

LOL

Warped420 or Michael, started the LEGION MODZ TEAM. Learned everything I know about building from PlayfulGod and Junkie 2100.
Built a JellyBeer $ROM$. But no visual until we used Hroark13's legacy mods.
I made a Tutorial on XDA.
Always here to help
Edit. I really should slow down and read. I'm not a mod

Where is ANDROID for Raphael while wasting time with unusable ROMs?

Dear community,
I humbly express my opinion that except few ROMS on this page (Energy, RRE & Shep's) the rest are basically garbage..
Stop wasting your time and if you have programming skills (I don't), try to port Android on Raphael. I mean Please Focus on something everybody can use. Windows is going nowhere.. and Android is here with big promises.
I believe Raphael is too much of a device for a crippled OS like Windows. I am sure there are millions of people would think the same way.
WinMo:
Still 65K colors, buggy like Bill Gates, sweaty like Steve Balmer.. Touch Pro is one of the coolest devices one can own, but with an ugly ass OS, it becomes completely useless. WinMo has completed it's lifecycle.. 6.5 has no major pluses over 6.1 even 5.0.. The MS mentality for programming needs a communist revolution.
I will try to stick around.. I am sure there will be a huge success if skilled developers focus on porting Android on HTC devices and will make our devices more useful..
Thank you all, especially the aforementioned chéfs.
I don't want Android OS on my Raphael. 65k is enough, I don't have any bugs (using latest official HTC ROM), I have tons of great, useful applications for WM and I do think that WM is the most powerful platform of all. iPhone and Symbian possibilities are ridicioulus comparing with WinMo, and Android is still new...

Me or him?
Even though I like android (had it on my kaiser), I still prefer windows mobile. Its just so customizable. But the more choices we have the better, so I say if we can then lets do it.
But to say only the 3 listed roms are good is a little narrow-minded and disrespectful. I have tried a lot of roms and I believe they are very good in their own ways. Like the Mystic Roms were a favorite before, for great aesthetics and battery life. Or the Louzeberry, very original... and thats just those two.
Hope you understand that not everyone has one taste in roms that's why we have so many, and all the chef's deserve a little praise for their hard work.
I'd like to see android on fuze/touch pro, if for nothing other than more freedom of choice and general competition.
More competition makes for better innovation.
You know, i'm quite tempted to make a "madlib" from your post, changing around a few nouns here and there would make it alot more accurate
But i'll refrain from that and just laugh at you for making such an audacious demand under the guise of an 'opinion'

That is quite a statement coming from someone wih 3 posts . Have you actually tried all of the ROMs here? Or did you start a new account just to come in and rattle cages? Good luck with your project, I'm sure we'll all be tryin it out once you get it ported smart guy

I agree, this guy sounds like a total douche bag and deserves nothing. How's that for a Christmas gift? The people on these forums are doing everyone a favor by creating these ROMs... these ROMS are free and are created on people's spare time, show some f-ing respect.
-1^100 for not doing a more research and dissing the great work done here in the Raphael ROM Forum.

(!)My last word before leaving winmo

I have to say that the rest of the guy's on the Touch Dual board really suck.
All these wanabee rom cookers and beta tester abusers need to be shot.
DON'T POST UNTIL IT WORKS, OR SAY IT IS JUST AN BETA WHEN IT ISN'T!
RESPECT THE PEOPLE ON THIS BOARD!! ALSO TESTERS!
Wasted a lot of time on these defective rom's.
monx® you suck for not supporting use here!
No wonder everybody deserts WinMo in favor of the iphone! I hope you developers choke in your abuse, you are the ones that kiled windows mobile.

Yeah, me 2! But isn't that what it's all about here? If we wanted just a phone to, well, make phone calls and stuff like that we would probably all be better off using some stock phone.
Most people here develop/flash/test/play for fun, because they are bored and because they can, after all the forums name has a 'developer' in it, not a 'user'. So if you expected some kind of 24/7 tech support here, well that is the wrong forum here, sorry. This also isn't supposed as a free 'make my phone flashy, shiny and new' service. Sure it's fun to check out some new stuff on your old touch dual, but to be honest, if you expect a release from one of our (very able) cooks, where everything works at first shot, well, the guys at htc are not that good either. If you dislike winmo, go buy yourself another toy, but don't waste everyones time here flaming around.
Bye bye
I don't think he isn't that wrong at all. A ROM needs to work, period.
It's the core of you device where all your other stuff runs on. Most of us use our device trough the day, not just in emulators.
Its very important that it works before you roll it out to the public. If you want beta testers, then say so and don't just drop it on the users and leave.
People will not come back! And a lot of new users don't know what the forum is about. but they are WM users.
@ mblaster: I am here too, I am not bored at all.
Sure the forums says 'Developers' and not 'Tinker-bells', but most of the developers here are 'Real Pro's', they develop for the real world, not just to tinker of boredom. They have an plan, and make great thing that works. You will find there stuff on new released devices all over, including the iPhone!
----
I say this again, a ROM is the core of your device where other software runs in/on.
Its not an piece of software like an games you just install.
ROM development is a lot of work, its not just switching some graphics and putting in some already-applications an not care about the rest. It is an art and an profession, and real cook is an master of devices
I think what Bardof means is that the quality-of-service needs to go up again, not the volume of ROM's, even on the new devices.
An ROM that doesn't work right, gives a bad taste to the Windows Mobile platform. We all know the effects..
I love this forum and WM, I have been in and out sinds the release of the MDA, it think needs to grow in quality, not shrink.
Where is the poll option "Complete Disagree!" ???

I agree with the most of what you are saying. I haven't been replying on most of the posts on this forum but I've been reading a lot and testing a lot of ROMS, and it's a shame that only few of them work OK. Always need to install this and that CAB to get your phone working.
But....I know that cooking a ROM isn't that easy and it can take a lot of work and many of the good cookers don't get the respect they should, or help.

[Q] Do I smell a Fish?

Recently we have seen HD2 Android developers discontinue their builds LOL! Interesting to note that all are going to school? Its unfortunate that the Cooking on HD2 Android is kept much of a secret...what I suggest is if they are discontinuing then they should share their Cooking knowledge. Of course most of the pple aren't farmilia with Linux stuff lol! however I am sure that with a good tutorial and the tools you are using, pple will be good to go.
Not to hide words, I am calling out to Pongster, Shui8 and Darkstone to now share their knowledge for the good of the community.
Thank You.

I Agree
nothings hidden.. check htc-linux, freenode
I see what your getting at but I dont think its fair to say that anyone is "hiding" anything.......
All the information you need is out there but the problem is that doing something like this is realy quite difficult if you dont already have a good amount of knowledge on the subject.
Its one thing to learn from a tutorial but for something like this you would really need to start from scratch and the learning curve for a beginner taking on such a project would be very very steep.
You are right though, if more people took up these sort of projects then the world would be a better place
I just wish I had the time / mental capacity to do it myself.
Yeah, I see what you are saying. I guess one just has to step up to the game. Create the mental capacity and take the plunge into the deep. I guess the learning starts again then, but I just wish these guys put up something for the taking rather than just dropping off projects and run....

New Dev Team - RECRUITING NOW!!!

What's up fellow Evo 3Ders??
Let me first start off by introducing myself. I'm BThomas22x, and up until today, I Developed exclusively for the Samsung Epic 4G. This has obviously changed though, because today I got myself an Evo 3D, and will now be Developing for this device as well. If you guys need any credentials for anything I've done, feel free to go to the Epic 4G Dev section and just look me up. I've done numerous things for the community, such as: porting Ubuntu, Developing ROM's, Developing Kernels, and countless contributions to Mods and helping other Developers with their ROMs, and/or Kernels. I actually have a friend that came to the 3D as well, Sniperkill, if anyone is familiar with him, feel free to ask him as well. Now, onto the reason for this thread.
Since I will be developing for the 3D now as well, I'm going to need a team. I prefer to have people that actually have experience, however, experience is not necessary. To be completely honest, if you don't have any experience, I will personally work with you to start you out on themes or something simple. Also, as of right now, I do NOT have a team name. My team is Team Viper for the Epic, but seeing as how someone already has that team name for the 3D, I will have to think of something else. Once the team is created, we will, as a team, decide on a name, unless I think of something really cool before then lol . Anyways, If you are interested, you can reply to this thread, or you can shoot me a PM. Give me a little something you've done, or if you have no experience, let me know and we'll work on getting you started.
Thank you all, I appreciate the time you took to read this. Feel free to hit me up any time, even if you're not interested in joining, and you just have a question. I believe in having a strong community spirit, and maintaining a drama free forum. There were some issues in the Epic forums with people being demanding or just causing drama with the few Dev's there were, so hopefully this community is a bit more peaceful lol. The only rules that I have for the team are actually really simple. They're the same rules for the entire XDA site. If you use someone else's work, give them credit, as well as please be respectful of other Developers as well. This is a community, so let's work together and make one of the best phones on the market even better.
Thanks again guys,
BThomas22x

The force is strong within this one. Anyhow, my knowledge in regards to android development is poo, but I am thinking of self teaching myself.
Wouldnt mind helping out. I'm pretty good at theming, just learned how to make skins, and learning new things. Also know how to make splash screens.
Sent From My HTC Evo 3D Using Tapatalk On The Now Network From Sprint!
I'm actually quite interested now. You seem like a great guy who's really willing to help out the less knowledgeable, I have a feeling this might be really cool to do
I am interested but my knowledge of android isn't that great however I am self taught computer builder/fixer and I have programed in Basic, C++, Perl and others probably not worth mentioning all self taught though (Right now my programing skill is weak as I haven't done any in 10+ years) but I am a super fast learner and would love a little guidance to give some back to this great forum.
I will happily join. I'm not much if a developer, but I want to learn more. I have designed websites and could learn rom theming, and with time can learn devoloping.
P.s. are u going to stick to snake names for the team name?
Sent from my 3devo...s-off was found lurking in the girls room, tricky?
I know very little and when I say very little I mean nothing lol. But I am willing to learn. If that counts. My profession is in It and system admin. Also I run a Pc repair business on the side. Self taught all the way. Only been dealing with android for a little over a year and a half. Started with my hero and now I'm on the 3d. If your team can use a guy Like me then I'm all in. I got time and dedication. Figure I can sleep when I die.
Locked & Loaded
I'll help, I guess. I know nothing fancy about developing, but I have made a theme and an app.
PM me If you want a noob with (possible) potential.
I dont know crap, but im bored with alot of time on my hands and would love to learn about cooking up Roms. Count me in.
I Haz 3D!
I've screwed around with kernels, ROMs, and such, but never actually built and flashed one. I'm still learning from resources on this site and elsewhere. I would love to help you out, and learn alot in the process. PM me if I could be of use. Or, [email protected]

HEY BT!!! It's awesume to see you developing over here for the E3D!!
Let me tell you guys this, BThomass22x is a VERY talented developer! If any of you know, he was the chief developer for viperROM for the Epic 4g. His Roms were FAST, stable, and very well themed! A VERY talented developer!
It's good to hear from you again BT!!

I am very intresting and would love to join! I dont have much knowledge but I am a quick learner
If you still need help, I'm down. I started on the OG EVO and built my own roms and themed them too, as well as compiled my own AOSP rom for it. I don't have much knowledge with Sense 3.0 yet but got a base rom last night to start ripping up and customizing. Also, I'm ridiculously keen on Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, so I could help with making sigs for the team or making cool wallpapers for the ROM.
It would take me a while to catch on to customizing ROMs for Sense 3.0 simply because I'm used to the OG EVO but would be happy to help.

Ever Wish You Were A Developer

I'm probably one of the many or maybe just a few who's been around here for several years taking advantage of everything the developers give us. I don't develop a thing and don't understand programming for **** but I do appreciate everyone one that does.
If it weren't for you guys making simple instructions and some one click programs wannabees like myself would be sol. Thanks for you your work.
I researched basic programming and must say it looks like a time consuming pain in the ass which makes it amazing that there's people in here that give us so many options. Much respect.
Thanks

I'm not much of a ROM dev, but I am a app dev. It is very time consuming and you gotta have a passion for it. I am thankful for the devs here. I've donated money and helped devs when I could. Thanks to all the awesome devs. If any dev ever needs an extra programmer, I'm here to help if I can. I know Java, Android, and was a PhotoShop professional for 7+ years. I have one week of class left and I will be graduating with a degree in mobile application development... And it is all because of XDA that I quit my job as a newspaper photojournalist(7+years) to seek a career in programming.

Like notasimpleway said it is all about having a passion. If you love what you are doing it is much easier and enjoyable. I started developing because I wanted to be able to make my own ROMs so I can add the features I want and not have to be dependent of another developer to get those features. I also like to help people and with XDA I am able to help people who share the same passion I have.

Couldn't agree more with these, it takes a lot of patience and dedication to make things work the way you intend them to. Testing, Debugging, Bashing head against wall trying to figure out why one little thing doesn't work... it's all part of the fun. I just feel good that I can give something back to the community that gave me so much already. Classic XDA FTW.
+ 1 to the OP. Thank you all for everything you do! My phone and transformer prime would be boring as hell without you guys! It is very much appreciated!

I am a developer :wack: I wish I had more interest in Android so I would do something with it lol.

Added you to list. You're insane man. I followed your thread on downgrading Hboot 1.5 and while I was lucky enough to not have 1.5 you would have saved me if I did. Thanks!

When i flash stuff on my phone made by other devs and show people what i've changed, everyone goes "thats pretty sweet".
But then it actually upsets me that i actually really do enjoy all this and yet im studying subject that have nothing to do with computing (accounting, Economics ). Its too late to go back now and re-do A-levels and start computing, but i guess i just have to carry on what im doing, learning little by little everyday about android, coding e.t.c and maybe later on re-visit computing.
On a plus side, i have started reading through tutorials on internet to learn to code, i also tried to port a CDMA rom to GSM for myself to use (Failed), and was also thinking of making a basic app to see if i could actually do it! (Key word is thinking not actually doing)
And to think i've got so involved in all this, with a community that i managed to find after getting my trusty old desire, learning the basics on how to root and s-off. learning the basics of ADB. I'm very pleased with what i've learnt in 2 years yet i feel like i can learn much more and i will thanks to of course everyone here, especially the Devs and the people that write up long tutorials for people to learn from.
Maybe a few years down the line, ill release my own ROM or crack the Hboot of a device (Yeh dream on) But who knows
Thanks a million Developers

I wish one day I can make people happy like these guys have made me. One person I think you should add is vin255764. Been using a lot of his work since I first rooted.
Agreed.
Thanks to all devs.
Also, developing apps, roms and stuff is very interesting actually, once u try it ur deep into it...
Old age of programming where it had lack of visual and u were just typing all the ugly code manually then trying to run it for months is over. Now it's very interesting, like narcotic, once u tried it and understood something, you will get addicted..

A few years of getting into development can get you a long way. Sure, it wont help on getting ICS to our 3Ds quicker, but it could help you in getting LTE on AOSP working on your Holographic Evo LTE++. Or you could get to work on that one app you always wished existed.
I'd recommend starting out with C/C++. Learn Java AFTER C++. I'm not sure where you could get started as I learned most of my stuff from classes, but a few textbooks/online tutorials sound like a good starting point.

Too add onto this. You can also follow my tutorials in my signature to learn how to compile source code for AOSP or CM. It will get you familiar with using a command line as well as teach you about how Android comes together if you read some of the files and try working out errors along the way as you compile the source.

Thank you for adding me to the list of developers. I really appreciate it, even though I consider myself more a MODder or hardcore tinkererererer lol.
The true developers are that of the TeamWin, Revolutionary, AOKP, CyanogenMOD, and MIUI teams. Brilliant minds at work here!

I agree with freeza here.
I started doing my own mods, themes and roms because, as dastin said, it gets tough having to rely on someone else to make what *you* or how *you* want it to look. Half the fun and a great learning technique is, finding an awesome mod, whether from another ROM, or even from a different device, and reverse engineering it.
That's how I got my start with finding the passion for developing. Sure, tutorials are great, but they offer little info about how or why changing 'this' makes it do 'that'.
Any aspiring developers/modders...the best advice I can offer is to learn from other peoples triumphs, by ripping it to shreds and seeing/figuring out how it works. It will give you a sense of satisfaction, but also provide building blocks for your own personal 'dev'ing' endeavors

I agree. Learn C++ first and Java is so much easier to learn.
