[Q] Contacts being deleted against my will - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys
Got an issue here and was wondering if someone can help
I have got my contact list how I want it with all phone numbers correct and all contact pictures. I have backed this up to SD card.
All of a sudden I noticed that I was missing some contacts. They had just vanished.
I have my phone set to sync with Gmail as I want to get my emails however, I have a feeling this is where the problem lies. I uploaded my saved contacts file to gmail so that my phone contacts and gmail contacts were identical. All was ok for a few hours then I noticed that contacts were missing again.
Can someone help me out? Is there a way I can sync with gmail and not contacts? I have been through all the options and turned off all sync settings (except mail) but its still happening.
Maybe this is not a sync issue and actually a problem with the phone?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help

Hmmm perhaps u can try make sure your contacts r al saved in gmail correctly.. take sync off, delete al your contacts aswel as your backup in sdcard, reboot then turn sync on?

I found when gmail sync'd back to the phone the contact pics were really low res and not worth using

What are you using to back up your contacts...? the installed SE backup will not backup synced contacts, and the android contact backup (you use from the contacts menu) will not backup pictures in the full x10 resolution... With a whole lot of stuffing around, I think I got the best results backing up my system with Sprite Mobile and recovering it through the SE Backup (they're both made by Sprite, but seem to have different options (one's got better backup, the other has better restore - yeah, it's odd, but worked for me, whereas any one on its own would not)

Oh, and have you asked your girlfriend about it...? Mine frequently goes into my phone and deletes contacts she doesn't think should be in there...

Lol, thats funny!
The only way I have found to stop it is to completely stop syncing even with gmail and to use maildroid to get my mail instead

Yeap, but theyr like 6months out of date... And....I.... Kinda deleted my contacts from google....
I sync with google and keep detailed contact info updated through my gmail acc and have never had a single issue, other than gmail creating new contacts for me. Works like a charm and ive never backed them up once with any app and have flashed my phone at least 2 dozen times.

Yea, thats why gotted rid off the gmail contacts... Pissed me off when it added every people i have send email to my phones contacts...
Yeap, ive normaly used the Phones contact backup feature. From contact's you push the menu button -> More -> Copy contact's -> "Sim card - sdcard"... Worked perfectly so far.... untill i formated the sdcard...
**** me sideways...
It saved them to /system/pim not to the base folder as i remembered... And the folder is impossible to recover...

The only thing you have to do in order to NOT have all of your gmail contacts on your phone is to mark the phone only contacts as "My Contacts" in Gmail, then set the phone sync so that "All Contacts" is NOT sync'd to your phone.
That way you have it nicely seperated and don't end up with 100 email addys in your phone.
That way you can never lose your contacts the way you have.

But anyways, what ive learned, Turned SE-Sync on auto, and letted it syncronise all needed stuff every second day...

Gmail Sync Problems

Hi,
I'm having problems syncing my contacts from my phone to my Gmail account. Basically, they're syncing the wrong way!
If I put a new number in my phone then sync to Gmail the number is deleted as it isn't already in my Gmail contacts list.
Surely this is the wrong way around? Surely it should add the new number to my Gmail account? After all, the phone is the logical place to create new contacts.
So, what am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?
If it matters I'm running Vodafone branded firmware: Baseband 1.2.28, Build R2BA024.
Thanks.

could it be you're editing your contacts on gmail as well? then again.. it couldn't be because it's 2 different contacts right?
how bout, if you create an account in google contacts? does it get synced with your fone and show up there?
Yeah if I add a contact to Gmail it syncs to my phone fine. Just not the other way around.
*confused*

i also have a question to this case. obviously (and i think this is also the reason why this thread was opened) gmail sync only syncs the contacts from your gmail-account to the phone...actually it would be more valuable if i could transfer the contacts from my phone to my gmail-account, as it would also be a kind of backup if something happens to my device.
it is also a thing of daily routine, if i receive a new number or mailadress, i do save it in my phone. because of the only sync-direction gmail->phone, i have to sit in front of my pc in the evening and add the new contact details to my gmail-account...? wouldn't it be easier if i could start a transfer from my phone TO gmail?!?!

My thoughts exactly! Far more logical that way around.
The weird thing is, it used to work that way for me. Now it doesn't. As far as I'm aware I haven't changed any settings on either my phone or my gmail account. Very strange!
Tried clearing the cache btw and that hasn't solved the problem.

so you already did that with your X10? you transferred the contacts of your phone to gmail?
of course it would be perfect, if i could chose which side should synchronize with the other...
e.g. if i need to reset my phone, then i'd love to get my contacts back from gmail!
hope, that somebody can help us here!

Yeah. As far as I'm aware it used to sync in both directions. When I first got my phone I ran a manual sync and all my contacts appeared on my phone. Then if I added one to my phone, or changed one, and ran another sync it would update my gmail contacts with the new/changed one.
Now it doesn't. Strange!
The only thing I can think it would be is that I changed the last part of my address from googlemail.com to gmail.com.
I wonder if that might have something to do with it?

hm, so it should normally align both states maybe? is the sync-function really checking the contacts of the phone and those in gmail an adds only the contacts on that side, where they are missing?
well, i have tried the sync once and it deleted all the new contacts on my phone! there was only a transfer of my gmail-contacts to my X10...phone book was ignored and even overwritten!
any hints what sunjin an i do wrong?

It used to sync both ways for me but now it doesn't. This is very, VERY annoying as I frequently add new contacts to my phone but I now have to remember to go add them to Gmail too or they get deleted next time I sync. Illogical if you ask me.
Can anyone with a different phone/version of Android confirm if this happens to you also?

[Q] Problem with contacts backup restore in 2.1

Before upgrading to 2.1, I used the backup and restore app to backup all contacts.
After upgrading, I chose restore. The process ran smoothly from the beginning, but stayed for a long while at 93%, and then reported "Finished". Checked my phonebook - no contacts.
I have been doing regular backups, so I tried using an older backup file. Same problem - the app does not pass 93%. No contacts.
Does anyone have the same problem? Know how to solve it?
I also have backups as vcard and SE sync, but those do not seem to backup everything.
I was about to post when I found this thread.
Before moving on to 2.1, I would like to backup my messages, contacts, etc. Could anyone of you suggest an application which *WORKED* while moving to 2.1? Which app you used and was the restore done correctly using it?
Thanks in advance.
all msges were deleted, but i got all my contacts back trough gmail, i allways sync it with that, its fast and easy, thanks to that option i recovered my contacts over 20x allready the last months
Actually my gmail has around 1000s of contacts which I dont want to move to my phone. So I would like to use a backup app. Anyone who used a backup app successfully, please suggest.
Thanks.
Testing as we speak...
* SE sync: Too unstable. Some contacts are duplicated, some contacts are not duplicated but their data entries are (2x same phone number etc). Does not treat addresses or middle names well.
* Gmail: You can create groups and sync only those groups (or one group) that you need on your phone. However, with 1.6 I was not able to sync 2-way with gmail. Updates on gmail account would not update on the phone. Also does not treat first name/surname well.
* Standard backup and restore app: Well, as mentioned above... Restore of contacts does not work in my case!
* Export contacts to vcard or similar (from contacts app -> choose backup): Quickest and most accurate so far. Does not maintain links to facebook, twitter, possibly not contact images. But otherwise the most reliable service in my case.

Never had this problem with 1.6, I used to make updates to my contacts and calendar items on my gmail account and it would instantly update on my phone and vice versa.

Same here. Always worked a treat for me.
The only issue I have is when I create a contact on my phone, it doesn't create it into one of my sync'd groups which then gets removed. I have to then go into gmail to assign it to a group which will then sync back.
Still, Gmail is by far the best thing to use to sort contacts!
Still it wont save my messages. Therefore I want to know if anyone tried a backup app.
Lots of people have had problems with Gmail contact sync working only one way. Could have something to do with combining with SE sync.
Gmail contact sync seems to work perfectly on 2.1 (after 3 hours...)
The-Lord: The built-in backup and restore app had no problems with restoring 7 months of text messages. If you want to be sure you don't loose contents, you could back up your texts to Gmail first, using the free app SMSBackup.
If you need to backup and restore your contacts use MyPhoneExplorer.
It now supports Android and runs over WiFi.
SOLVED
I had this same problem, restore the contacts as normal, if you have favourites check the favourites folder in phone-book or go to text messages and press new message, find or type a contact you have, press on the contact open it and save it this will refresh the phone-book list, exit the application, turn on and off phone all contacts should reappear. BAM Saved. Not easy but worked for me.

Did you do this through the stock messaging app? and when u look up the contact in messaging, u say click on it and open it, but do u mean just open it up to where its a new message? and then save the message? thanks for the help ahead of time though.

Prior to upgrading to Nordic, I used MYBACKUP PRO to backup contacts, msgs and call log etc. After completing the upgrade I did a restore and everything was restored apart from my Contacs. I kept trying but with no luck. After an hour or so I tried again and the contacts were restored. I think you have to leave the phone to settle down prior to doing a restore. Hope this is of some help

Solved. Installed 2.1 again and all was fine. also solved laggy issue.
Resolved Issue! Here is HOW!
To backup your contacts before upgrading to 2.1 Nordic, you need to save them from the phonebook app to the memory card BEFORE upgrading.
I had to downgrade my phone to 1.6, run the restore, save them to memory card, then re-upgrade to 2.1 nordic and import them from memory card and it worked very will.
I had to do this 2 times for both mind and my wife's x10 phones!
The restore function does work fine in 2.1 after importing from memory card. I believe the records that are saved for the contacts are different from 1.6 to 2.1. there may be an additional field that we don't know about.
So word to Caution: SAVE TO MEMORY CARD BEFORE upgrading to 2.1.
Cellphone Carrier: Rogers Wireless
Happy X10ing
The restore of the contacts DID work. It just restored to our google account. If you try to add new contacts you'll be notice that the phonebook wil ask you where to add, your phonebook or your google account. You could change the phonebook content by clicking three man pics at the top left of your phonebook. Hope this will help.

Gmail and phonebook contacts issue

Hi,
Ill try to explain everything properly.
Basically I reflashed my phone.
I made a backup of my contacts via memory card, and was hoping everything in gmail would be ok and that it would sync everything back the way it wad before reflashing. BUT
I reflashed and it did sync, but I found I had many contacts missing.
The missing ones I found where all my new contacts that had been saved since 2.1 update- hence I realised that when I saved a new contact I should NOT have selected "phone contact" and I should have been selecting "gmail contact." these options were never available in 1.6
So now basically what happened was I imported contacts from sd card and ended up with double copies and everything was screwed. So I spent ages going through phonebook and edited over 200 contacts individually but I deleted gmail section and now every contact is under "phone contact" and won't sync with gmail and I can't find an option to change it to gmail contact.
Basically. Help please!

I'm not confirm but you can try to delete the system data of of contatc appliaction by Titenium backup & restore your contact backup again.
or find contact data folder undet data/data folder. delete the same & restore the contact backup....
It might seem obvious, but have you checked which contacts you have checked to display in the view menu?
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
That's what I was thinking - I think you can view "phone" or "google".. which have you selected?
Also, your phonebook has it's own backup for contacts on the sd card. When you open phonebook hit menu button and import from sd card. Make sure you check the box that you display phone contacts. However, I believe this is contingent upon you having backed them up the same way. When I use Titaniun Backup I run into the same problem you did, so I always use this procedure.
thnxs guys but all thes things diddent work :S anny other toughts?
Are you synced with Facebook? When someone calls me who isn't in my phonebook, but is my friend their name and picture comes up...
...and my solution wasn't awesome but the phonebook runs ten times better...
I am synced to Gmail, and I edited my entire book and reduced / merged 2500 contacts into 350.
sent using mind control...
Dont know how to make those contacts visible again but next time use MyBackup Root instead of sync. You might even want to try using it to backup all your contacts, even though you cant see them, and then restore the backup. If theyre there but not visible that might work. Its kind of a shot in the dark but might be worth a shot.
If you havent tried it yet, reboot the phone and see if that works.
