upgrade in april.....how can i get it now? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

just looking for some tips or something..
I have an upgrade on April 3rd..how can i get it sooner?...I was wondering how I can persuade a Verizon rep into giving it to me now, (or when TB comes out) anyone ever accomplish this? or is there no way they would do that?

1) Good luck on the early upgrade. My NE2 is due in May. If it works for you, send him my way
2) If the TBolt release date keeps slipping you and I will both be able to use our upgrades

Yeah probably March 17th.

I did it when my OS went out on blackberry storm and when my HTC Incredible's display got sweat behind it. I was also having signal issues with the HTC. Now I have a Facinate (my third) with all kinds of issues and am hoping to get it swapped out too. The bottom line is... I don't think they will swap out phones without you having major documented issues with your current phone. I'm very lucky that I have a great Verizon store by me and understanding reps. Just my 2 cents. Heck, who knows!!? It doesn't hurt to ask! I Good luck!

Someone on here awhile back suggested getting your upgrade date moved forward under the guise of wanting to order an iPhone, then since it is changed in the system, get the Thunderbolt instead.

If you want to get the T-Bird before your upgrade date, you can buy it new by adding another line to your account -- $10. (The price of the T-Bird is the same whether you're upgrading or buying it new.) After you buy, go to Verizon store and switch the phone numbers so your current number is on the T-Bird. Once your upgrade date is passed, cancel the extra line. You'll pay $10 extra for a couple of months, but you'll have the new T-Bird.
This may sound shady, but it's perfectly legit if you think about it. And no, they won't move up your upgrade date.

I spoke to a rep on the phone yesterday and asked about the same thing (my upgrade is on 4/8). She told me that the most they can move your upgrade date is 30 days. So I suggest calling them on 3/3 and asking them about it.

Aren't they going to require a data package on the new line, and require keeping the data on the old line as well?

Each line with a smart phone needs a data plan.

I keep an old flip phone just to use as a third line phone..... but yes you need to have a data plan with every smartphone and I think you need a phone on every line.

Before Verizon changed their upgrade rules, you were able to upgrade after 13 months on a 2yr contract. If it was on a family plan, it had to be the main line. I was able to do this every since the BB Tour came out. I got an Eris 4 months later at the discounted price. I did this when the D2 came out as well. Now it took me calling back and forth until I got a cool rep and did it for me. Each rep had their reasons why they couldnt and why the others did it for me werent supposed to. To get the D2, took me 3 days of trying of about 3-8 calls a day. I upgrade on that time, 11 months early. When I called today, I was told, wont be happening anymore because of their new policy.
W/e you decide to do, you have a better chance of doing it over the phone as the rules are different for them than retail. I have to wait until July, so I feel your pain. =( But it will be the first time I have ever used my new every 2 cuz I have never waited this long before, lol.

This information was good to know, I have the upgrade on the same date (4/3) but I'm not going to bother pulling strings until an exact release date is announced. How exactly did you convince Verizon to move your upgrade date? I'm just curious which number I should call when it gets announced so I can try to negotiate with them.

I just went through the 611 on my phone and selected the upgrade option. When the rep answered, I straight up asked lol. The only catch is you have to call within the 30 days of your upgrade. You can't move your upgrade date until then.

[Q] Getting a warranty replacement on my Eris

So I went into my Verizon store this morning to do a waranty replacement for my Eris due to a dead spot in the upper right corner of the screen. Replacement will be here in 3 days. What are the odds I will be sent a different droid? This is my first time doing a warranty replacement.
getting a different droid phone is highly unlikely, a lot of Eris's have been turned in to verizons trade in program so you will most likely get a eris refurb.
Sent from my Ginger Tazz with gum drop buttons
just got an eris refurb yesterday. your chances of getting an eris are 100% unless you were told otherwise.
Eh yeah another Eris it was. 8 more months till upgrade time.
update: after 24 hours with this phone, it is more screwy than my 1st one!
another one is on the way but they placed it on my 2nd line which is my fiancee's eris. I call to tell them its for my line, and the guy says well when I get it send it back and they will send one for my line. So I got frustrated and the guy offered me a month free service and transferred me to tech support. The guy there says when the phone comes in I can still activate it on my line. Hope the 3rd one isn't so messed up.

Yeah, you can switch which phones are on what lines at will, or replace with phones not even acquired through Verizon. Sometimes you do have to at least activate it the first time on the line that it was originally intended, though, and then you can switch it on Verizon's site, in theory.
Hopefully it keeps working well for you.
The best thing to do with Verizon reps when they start screwing up is to get exponentially more irate than you really are. You'll usually get something for free

emailed verizon saturday and they called me back today. my line was eligible for the early upgrade, but they rep was nice enough to do both. he also said this was the last time I could do an early upgrade. So Wednesday I'll have the x and my fiancee will have the Inc. I hope the devs for these phones are as awesome as the ones for the eris!

I actually was having issues with my Eris, I went into a Verizon corp. store, they told me I'll have a free Inc the next day. 3 days later I got another Eris and an apology letter explaining that in order to get the early upgrade my Eris must fail 3 times in total.
This second Eris is acting really odd and I may have to take it back.

Yeah, that sounds really weird. You can definitely put any phone you want on any line, at least after initially activating it on the line it was "meant" for. I know I already commented to that effect, but, WTH.
Sorry to resurrect the thread, but I do have some more information. Or at least have had a similar situation. My fourth eris just fell victim to the trackball issue. Went to store and was offered the LG Vortex which is an android phone, but does not have an xda forum (is it bad that is a requirement for my phones now). They told me to call and see what other options were available. The rep on the phone agreed to get me a new incredible for $99. Would give me credit on my next bill for $120. However, it would use one of the two year upgrades on another line. Just wanted to report my results. Also this means I will still have my eris and my wife will have hers, but most of my time will probably be spent with the inc forums. Although, now I have gotten my wife in to flashing her phone and such so she will expect updates...lol.

Rooting the Inc was pretty easy, even though there's no 1 click app like for the eris or z4 root for example. There's a gingerbread rom but no where near where the gb roms for the Eris are.

I really want to get this phone. My situation is that my contract doesn't end until next year but my yearly upgrade is 7/1 when and how will i be able to get the phone for $199?

You can get it in the 1st of July If you have an upgrade then.

lol just wait a few weeks.
i'd reccomend just waiting a couple of weeks, however....
If you really want to try and push it call: (877) 775 4886
It's the sprint customer service line that i've had the best luck with, they seem really nice.
Say you really want to get the EVO 3d, and want to get your upgrade moved up. Sometimes they say yes, sometimes they say no. They moved mine up from september to june.
Just hang up and call back if they say no, try a couple of times and you'll eventually get a rep that will move it for you.
Be persistent it took me 3 calls but they did it at no cost. At first they wanted me to buy out of my contract but I kept calling. My upgrade was january. Good luck
I would just wait 7 days.... I only pushed for two of my upgrades because they were August and next year.
wow we have the same upgrade day! lol i was wondering about this also. so is it 199.99 even though it's only a 1 year upgrade?

I'm 90% sure that the yearly upgrade ($75 off) only takes 75 off the original price the store is selling it for. So if its $599, you get it for $524 if you're at 1 year. The 2 year upgrade people (And 1 year gold) are getting extras off that 1 years can't get, or the 2 years would be paying 449 for the phone.
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong... Someone who works with sprint or RS or BB may know better.

No, it will be much more expensive with a 1 year upgrade. However, lots of people (including myself) have had luck calling the number GreenKnight posted to get their full (2 year) upgrade early. Most people are saying to wait because it seems like the key to getting moved up is already having your one year upgrade available. As always Your Milage May Vary.
Call the number. My one year wasn't until August and I got it pushed up for a full upgrade.
i havent tried the number but i did do that thing where you pm'd that dude at the sprint user forums and he forwarded it to someone who would help get you an early upgrade but they said that since my upgrade came in july that it was not eligible for that.... :/
My 75$ upgrade eligability isn't until 7/1 as well but I called last Thursday said no . So i hanged up and tried sprint chat and they upgraded me to full discount....

i was just given the $75 upgrade not long ago and i was suppose to get my full upgrade in march 2012. I called sprint and told them im tired of my pos phone and asked them to move my upgrade or im leaving...the supervisor I spoke to instantly gave me the upgrade. I checked 10 minutes after getting off the phone with him and it was there.
and its not like i did a dishonest thing. Im getting an Evo 3D and they get my money for another 2 years. win win situation.

Get upgrade pricing without being elgible

I wanted post this , as it has worked twice for me in the past.
When the Dinc came out, I wanted to switch from my BB storm to the dinc but I did not have an upgrade available to me. I called telesales and just said i wanted to upgrade bla bla (I let them figure out that I was not eligible for the upgrade). When he finally realized that I would not get upgrade pricing (about the middle of the sale) he said I would have to pay full retail for the phone.
I calmly asked him if there was a way I could get an upgrade, and after placing me on hold a few times, he finally said "no". From here, I started a conversation with him on ways I could get an upgrade, making sure to ask his opinion. After a few seconds of this, i acted like I had a brainstorm idea.
me - If I was a new customer I could get the new activation price correct
him - yes
me - So if I canceled service, the new customer pricing plus the early termination fee would be less than the full cost of the phone
him - I suppose so, yes
me - Okay, lets do that then, because i really hate my Storm and I want the dinc
him - can you hold a min for me
me - sure (wait 5 min)
him - sir, it looks like i will be able to get you that u that upgrade pricing afterall
me - really! Thats good news
The next day I had a Dinc in the mail. I also did this when I switched from the Dinc to the Samsung Charge and it worked.
The key i think is to NOT make it obvious this was the intent of your call, and make it seem like a genuine option. Dont be angry, dont be like "FINE ILL JUST CANCEL THEN!!!!!"
If they send call your bluff, then just change your mind at the last second "on second thought, I should check with my wife before I just cancel our service, Can I have your extension so I can call back after I talk to her"
the LAST thing any sales rep wants during their day is a service cancellation. They have metrics on signed up vs cancellations, and it is their job to keep you at almost any cost.
Hope this helps some of you!
I take it good ol' fashioned verbal flirtation doesn't quite do it anymore ;P

I tried something like that once, but the salesman's response was something like "you COULD do that', but then you have to pay the early termination fee." Add that to the 2-year contract price of the phone and it would have been abour the same as paying full price.
Guess I shouldn't have given up after that!
I have heard from several people that store managers can give you the upgrade if they really want to make the sale. Of course, you have to be in the store for that.

Hang up and call again. The guy I talked to gave me a completely different runaround, he said if I was 13 months into my current contract then I could get an early upgrade.
Same thing happened when I bought my droid incredible off of eBay. First person who talked to me said I couldn't active it, so I hung up. Called again, next person didn't even question it, he just activated it and bam it worked.

ive been trying this approach a few times a day since i heard wed that we could order early, but no dice. one lady tried really hard for me, she looked on the web and saw people were getting it early after i told her about, she was then on a mission to get one for me but finally said that it had been totally turned off and she couldn't find a work around.
oh well, tomorrow is the day!!
the quad-core phones are due out 1st Q 2012, so... we can call back then & say "I feel I was taken for a sucker... I just bougt this fancy top-of-the-line dual-core phone and now 3 months later you have quad-core!?... I want to talk to your supervisor!"...

AT&T Stores will have this phone in stock on launch right?

Hey guys, so I've been to three AT&T stores, and called 611 multiple times trying to pre order this phone. I can't do it online because of my upgrade date, which is 10 days after the phone comes out. So I am stuck and can't pre order it.
Do you guys think that AT&T will have the phone in stock on launch day? It comes out on a Sunday and my local store opens at 11 on sunday. If i go there when they open I should be able to pick one up right?
I know there are many AT&T employees on here, so I am just wondering.
When I got my iphone 4, I was able to get it from AT&T on their launch day without having to pre order. I just walked in and they took my name down and had me come back in 3 hours when the phone arrived and I was able to get it.
I have doubts that this phone will sell as much as the iphone, so its a pretty safe bet that I can walk in and pick up the white version of the phone right? Or should I keep trying to call and pre order. The 2 day difference is no big deal for me, and I am worried about pre-ordering and having it get delayed, and actually getting the phone a week later.
Just call 611 and talk to orders and service and describe slowly everything , you can do it, I was in the same boat as you,

Plus when you pre order it, you get that two extra days
Sent from my HTC PH39100 using xda premium
If you are due for the upgrade on the 29th, you're fine.
As long as you're in the same calendar month as your upgrade.
Just do it in a store and pre order there.
My upgrade date was the 29th of this month as well and I was able to go to the store and do the upgrade. Just hang in there...some of the stores are either unwilling or more likely...not aware of how to place the order itself.
But the issue of the upgrade not until the 29th is something that they all should know how to override (and will).
Good Luck!

at corp stores, im pretty sure they let you upgrade if you are within 4 weeks from your upgrade date, the can override the upgrade date,so in your case you should be fine, not sure why they aren't letting you upgrade. btw my friend upgraded for 299, his eligibility was 14 days after.he did it online dho. but in any case im pretty sure you will be able tp pick up one on or after launch date,if not, therz always bestbuy.. best of luck!
The problem with the upgrade is getting it online. Its only letting me get it by adding a new line.
But like I said, I can't do it in the stores because I have been to three of the corporate stores in my area, and giving them the SKU numbers, they are still not able to pre order it because it is not in their systems.
Ive talked to two different people on 611 and they said the same thing. Its no problem to override the date, however, the phone is not in the system.
I will try calling in again today.
EDIT:
Just called 611.
Same thing, not in the system, cant do anything about it. He said he cant enter the SKU number, and that it only shows phones that ship now.
But he did try really hard to get me to upgrade my home TV and internet service.
This is some terrible customer service, if I didn't upgrade a line on my account 2 months ago, id be thinking of going to Verizon.
In the meantime I will just wait for release and hope they have it in stock.
They should have it at every corprate store , the numbers will nit be that much.
I'm not sure where you guys live, but I called the fourth AT&T store 30 miles away, and they also said its online only
Idk I guess the AT&T stores here are bad

I asked the day before pre-orders started and the AT&T employee told me that the best information is online and she had no idea what's a Galaxy Note
Dang . . . when I walked in the girl said "How can I help you today?"
"Yea, I'd like to do a preorder for an upgrade on one of my lines."
"Oh, ok, for the Note right? I can help you right over here."

My upgrade date was the 29th of this month as well and I was able to go to the store and do the upgrade. Just hang in there...some of the stores are either unwilling or more likely...not aware of how to place the order itself.
But the issue of the upgrade not until the 29th is something that they all should know how to override (and will).
Good Luck!

Actually they released an alert less than a week ago saying not to override any Feb 29th upgrades because it was a leap year system glitch. It is really supposed to be March 1st upgrade eligible. So unless you get a rep who doesn't pay attention and read notices, then you won't always get lucky and get an override.

It's prob just an assumption lol... The note is the only phone we can preorder right now, so it kinda makes it easy to assume.

This is what they told me over the phone too that they've never heard of the note.

Sad. They're required to learn about it. We've had information on it in our systems since late January I think.

Trying for an early upgrade have 1 question...

So I am fed up with the constant reboots and call drops. I am up for and upgrade on the 21st of this month. I was about to call verizon and see if they can do it a little earlier. I am currently rooted, my question is are they going to ask me any information on software version? if so what should I tell them as I said am rooted and nerver wrote down the stock software/radio numbers. Do you guys even think I can cet an early upgrade?
The fact that your current phone is rooted has nothing to do with your upgrade.

More than likely they will probably ask as they will try and troubleshoot before the discussion of allowing an early upgrade will begin. That was one of the first things they asked for when the troubleshooting began for me.
They didn't ask me about my software when I tried to get mine replaced. But since I just happen to have that Thunderbolt back to factory stock and sitting next to me:
Android 2.3.4
Sense 2.1
Software number: 2.11.605.19 710RD
Baseband version (radio): 1.49.00.046w_1, 0.01.79.0331w_1
These should be consistent with a completely stock Thunderbolt. Doubt they'd ask anything else. Now, back in your cage, Thunderbolt.
Thanks for the replies!
so I called them. I didnt need any info and they were about to give me my upgrade till I tol them I wanted the galaxy s3. Aparently the s3 is "on a different system" (sounds like BS!!) and can not be given as an early upgrade. Another phone could have been given to me but I so love that s3 so guess I will have to wait
Every Verizon customer can upgrade 7 days early with full eligibility.

EPIC FAIL!!! so I went in for my upgrade n came out with the same phone i went in with. I was told that they are getting rid of the grandfathered unlimited data plans. so by upgrading my device I will have to get a limited data plan. this wont work for me as I easily go over 30gb/month. So my hopes and dreams of the gs3 have been shattered.

Why not get a used one that's in great shape on line. Then you wont feel so bad about rooting right away and not worrying about the warranty lol

What kind of troubleshooting have you gone through?
If you're rooted, some roms handle network traffic better than others.
The only dropped calls I've had are either due to the end call bug on Sense 3.0 roms and quicks with the proximity sensor where I end up hanging up on people.
I will say that my first T-bolt, which was a refurb had a bad screen, but since I've had my replacement, I haven't had any problems, other than VZW's network issues and the usual problems that arise from rooting.

Easy solution. Buy a used phone from CL(ATT is the easiest). Go over to Straight Talk and pay $45/month unlimited. They use att and Verizon depending on the phone (gsm or cdma). Same coverage, less money, and unlimited. ATT phones are easy, just order a sim for ATT from ST. CDMA phones are harder, need to use a ST cdma donor phone and clone to yours.

Wow, 30GB seems like quite a bit.
But, ya if you are really wanting a new device I would recommend eBay. I picked up a Galaxy Nexus for $240 bucks in like new condition with a nice Seidio case. Not only is this about the same price that I would have paid to upgrade (not eligible till January though) but now I can keep unlimited data. You won't find a SGSIII nearly that cheap (probably going to be closer to $400) but the GNex and SGSIII are very similar phones.

where have you been? That's been all the talk the last 4 months. Only way to get the s3 with unlimited data was to pre-order it.
