Warrenty info - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I honestly doubt this will be covered but it never hurts to ask, my fiancee and I both have steaks which we just got not three weeks ago. She had hers sitting on the kitchen table and out cat knocked it off from maybe 3 feet up, the screen, gorilla glass and all chipped straight through but sonehow the lcd underneath was protected. Everything still works besides the huge chip and crack in the gorilla glass, does dell offer replacements of this, even if theres a fee or is it a do it yourself kinda thing?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App

dell has stated that they do them on a case by case basis. i would have your wife call, be nice, play dumb and just say thats how she found it when she pulled it out of her purse.

Also be aware that if the phone is over 21 days old, you will get a refurbished unit.
Posted with StreakZilla, using XDA App.

If they do not send a new unit, they will offer to replace yours with a fixed one for around $250 US.
If you want to replace the screen on your own you can. Here is a guide: LINK

[Q] Broken Gorilla Glass but LCD ok, supplier?

As title says, I dropped my phone (!! Gahh! Idiot!!) but it still works fine but the gorilla glass has shattered and is currently held in place to stop it falling apart (heheh, reminds me of the episode of the Simpsons where a TV in a shop had a feature called: Durable outer casing to prevent fall-apart) by a piece of Sellotape.
I have found chinese sellers on ebay selling the LCD screen assembly as a unit for £120 but it is unclear whether this includes the gorilla glass.
Does anyone have a similar story with a known resolution to my problem. Don't want to spend the £120 if it doesn't have the glass and bizzarely the seller has not responded to my numerous questions asking this very thing.
In anticipation, sad owner of even sadder looking streak.
Touch+LCD replacement is around $90 plus shipping in Chinese auction sites, touch glued to LCD so finding separate ones could be challenging.
Sent from my Nexus One using Tapatalk
Actually having looked closer on ebay there are other sellers that do describe it as with glass, but they are still around £120. What sites can they be bought for for $90 plus shipping? With the exchange rate that sounds much more reasonable... do they post to UK?
You need to do some googling do remember seeing a few sites offering replacement lcd+touch units around that price. Having bought mobile phone replacement parts from asian sites before, intl shipment should not be an issue for them.

wow, I've been hearing from a lot of owners that their gorilla glass has cracked. how far from the ground did you drop it? I've heard it getting cracked from a 3 ft. drop, which isn't much at all. I thought these things were supposed to be tough.
on a side note, I just got my streak today from best buy. totally forgot to ask about insurance from them, but does anyone know if dell or at&t offers insurance? ive already dropped it on the first day, and seeing how long it is, I'm sure its gonna fall out of my jacket while getting into a car or something.
You might want to go to o2 and get your Streak replaced. For free. I was really surprised when they replaced mine which was with broken gorilla glass and intact lcd... fell down from 6 feet maybe

Dell replaced mine free of charge. Ring them
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Dell also replaced my unit when I called with broken screen. Had it in my hands in less than a week.
Try ringing 0844 444 3244 - Dell Mobility.
They will arrange UPS to pick up the device from your address.
(Due to Xmas, snow, bank holidays - my pick-up is delayed as UPS is not functioning properly!).
Just got off the phone now, Dell said they will send another request to UPS to have it picked-up, repaired and sent back to me for free.
Come on UPS!!!
I have already purchased insurance now through bank! Not taking chances this time
Also, you are not alone with the sello-tape business!
Good luck to you too!
I dropped mine and the lcd has leaked all around the edges but the gorilla glass stayed perfectly intact.
I have had an insurance claim for accidental damage accepted, however prior tio sending it off I thought I'd give Dell a ring and lo and behold they are going tio fix it or replace it free of charge! They said it was due to me being a valued customer and a one time only offer, but its definitely worth a shot as I've never had anything Dell before the streak.
I think I'd best get Steve's rom off it before I return it though

Brilliant! Thanks guys. They're collecting tomorrow.
Ok, spoke to Dell on Tuesday night and they said they will send out request and UPS will pick up by next working day.
Just spoke to UPS (Obviously with no reference / tracking number). I was told Dell should have sent me a prepaid envelope or provided me with a tracking number and hence she can't help me at all - even when I asked her to find the request by address..
Hopefully they will pick it up today, if not I will be phoning Dell to get tracking number.
Lumbard, did Dell give you any reference numbers??
HEY! Just got the phone picked-up by UPS
My streak has been returned today, its the same phone but with a new screen.
Thanks Dell!

mine got picked up yesterday by UPS, what is the turn around time like? the lady on the phone said up to 30 days, which i hope not
Anyway i am happy, O2 sent me my unlock code as well, free of charge, so still very happy with my purchase
Andhappy with dell, free replacement screen is great, now all i got to do is not drop it again
For those that were able to have Dell replace the glass, did they ask for the service tag number?
Reason being that my Austin Beta does not have tag
fell from about two feet and put a nick in the glass, then when I tried to use a lens cloth to clean it up, I heard a snap and realized the glass split in two
I got it for free, but damn that ruined my weekend.
Dell ALWAYS ask for service tag, in fact that is the first thing they ask when you call them. I'm gonna have to say that your streak won't be free anymore and it's gonna cost you about $150. But still $150 Streak aint that bad.

Mine was picked up on the 29th December, I tracked it by the ups website to budapest in hungary (I'm in the north west of england) where it arrived on the 3rd January and it arrived back with me today, which isn't too bad.
The only complaint that I might have is that once it is delivered to the factory, there is no way of tracking the progress of the repair, even if you call they cannot help.

[Q] Scratch on screen

I have been EXTREMELY careful with this phone, yet i managed to see a scratch on the screen as i pulled it out of my pocket. I'm still in my 30 day period and was wondering if at&t would take it back and exchange it for a new one...
I would suggest you contact the company where you bought the phone. But i think you can Imagine what their answer will be. But not all hope is lost. Nowadays you can replace phonescreens pretty cheap if you do this yourself or by someone else.

If you go back and replace your phone because of a microscratch on your screen, you're likely to get some very cross looks from the rep you speak with, and may not even get the exchange.
Now, I don't typically condone lying, but as one of the people who will potentially get screwed over by AT&T's new 5% rule in October... If you go back and complain about the battery or a "sluggish and laggy" phone, you'll probably get in and out quick and painless. But... Like I said before I don't condone lying, so I'm officially washing my hands of this thread

You scratched your phone..............it's not indestructible..............deal with it like the majority of us do instead of trying to scam a replacement for something which you did yourself!

I've had to replace two Atrix's so far, once because the housing was "loose" (probably manufacturing) and I called to see if there was a way to fix it myself and they said to just replace it. The second time was because the micro usb port was messed up (kept reading as if it was plugged in) so I brought it in and I was able to replicate the problem. Both times I had the phone back to them within 48 hours and both times the issue was physically apparent and replicated.
This is also an issue because a lot of us wanted an unlock-able bootloader but it was thought that many people who should not be "modding" their phone was going to try and probably take advantage of the warranty if they messed it up. This is just another version of that and it makes the argument harder for the rest of us that say we will take responsibility for our actions.
Put a screen protector on it and it won't get scratched. If the screen protector gets scratched get a new one.
Try putting a screen protector on it and see if the scratches are visible. They don't seem noticable to me. And no you can't repair with scratch remover cream. at least I didn't have much luck.
Another option buy the screen from ebay and repair it yourself. Not hard to do. I replaced mine after fallling from top of second story apartment building balcony on to the side walk. With otterbox impact case.

The answer is no ill tell you why
it cannot be returned any device with liquid or physical damage cannot be exchanged or returned... but it really depends on the scratch
He said he is still in the 30 day period, all he has to do is take it back to the store and they will exchange it for a new one.

On my iphone, I used automobile finishing tools to get a HUGE scratch out of my iPhone. I have not tried it yet on my Atrix, but are not they both made of Gorilla glass. Specifically, I used Meguir's #2 (like liquid sandpaper) followed by #9. Worked AWESOME to remove the scratches.
Gorilla glass is totally overrated. IMHO grab a couple of cheap eBay screen protectors before it's too late.
If anything, buy and use them for the peace of mind alone...

Was hoping to find someone that has actually ordered the glass and gone thru the process

Youre better off replacing both at the same time. Most phones have some sort of adhesive holding the glass and the digitizer together.
If you ship it next day tomorrow 2 motorola it's like 179 and whatever you pay for shipping 4 to 5 days turn around. I now love my otter box. The other box is good because the silicone never slips never falls
.215 radio - SimplexROM 1.2 - Daily Driver - XT912 - Wigdetsoid - Linux Installer - Otter Box
Disassembly of an Amoded display and digitizer isn't an easy job as well as correct assembly, especially for thin displays like the one that XT910 sports. I suggest you to order full display assembly for the best practice. However, you can buy the digitizer itself from ebay. Prices are about 50-80 $ !
I have worked on cell phones for years!!
Heat gun works wonders
I will try the ebay stuff maybe try Motorola and see what tgey will do
Again was just hoping to find somebody that has actually bought one before
Thx again guys

I broke mine after dropping it face first on the floor, and got quoted £250 plus postage, only to find that the company had finally received the screen only to find that it would only display green. So I told them to recycle it, it wasn't worth fixing it to wait another 2 weeks after waiting a month for it.
So just be careful whether the actual screen works or not.
Are there any good, thick protective screens that do not hamper the touch performance?
It doesn't matter how thick the screen is, it's still gonna break...I broke my Gorrilla Glassed Defy so had to stop putting it in jugs of beer until fixed it which was a bugger...great old pub trick.
Broke mine a few months ago and have been looking for parts sources since. It seems that the digitizer goes for around 180 to 200 $. But sending it to the repair service here in France costs a bit less. Go figure.
Anyway I'm actually waiting to see a good price on a used phone and will probably buy one and keep my old/broken phone for (other) parts. Or sell it on ebay.

My screen cracked from a simple 1 foot fall onto my drive way.-. Gorilla glass fails honestly. It was a brand new one too, just got it a few weeks prior because my other wouldn't update to ICS.

My wife's Razr Gorilla glass broke from a 1m fall. When she went to pick it up she also cut her finger in the broken glass, something that is surely an engineering problem. You might expect the phone to brake, but not to injure yourself. I contacted Moto and they changed the LCD for no charge, at least.
A friend was using a s3 when he dropped it.. Around less than a meter as well, he's really short.. Facing up.. The glass broke. So much for gorila glass.. At leastsamsung repaired his phone for free..

Bigger displays are easier to break no matter what kind of glass. Its simple physics

You cannot replace the digitizer alone. The digitizer and LCD and fused together, just like on the iPhone 4 and 4S, and the Galaxy S, S II, and S III phones. You can use a heatgun all you want (I also work in a cell phone repair shop), but you will end up destroying the LCD in the process anyway. The screens are often sold separately so that you can buy them individually, in case you drop your phone again it will be cheaper to repair the second time.
Gorilla glass is for scratch protection, if you drop it, it will crack. There is no getting around that.

So I finally did it...

I dropped my phone a couple days ago, tried to not pay it any mind. It was inside a slippery pocket and I took off my coat to turn it inside out for the rain and the phone went with it, OF COURSE. Did a quick inspection, everything looked fine so I pocketed it and went on my way.
This morning I was surveying my phone near my bedside window and I caught this weird glimpse of an arch so I tried to rub it away thinking it was a smudge.
Tilted the phone a little more and noticed that it's actually the plate behind the glass. So fragile. </3
I didn't get insurance, so I could probably go sign up then come back a couple days later and act like "OH NO!!"? Or should I just get a case and call it good? The crack isn't noticeable unless you tilt the screen and stare at it for a moment, and there aren't many moments where I or myself is staring at the back of it. Performance doesn't seem to be altered either.
Thoughts? Suggestions?
My guess is that performance won't be affected.
However, cracks tend to grow. It may be small now, but it likely will get bigger, unless you're lucky enough that both extremities of the crack are headed towards the bezel. Your call, but with it being on the back, and if you're getting a case, I would deal with it personally. Not having insurance sucks.
Also, trying to get ins on it now is not a horrible idea. Particularly if the damage is tough to see. Florescent lights are horrible for seeing those defects, the sun is much better.
Edit: one letter of grammer
Sent from my LG-E970 using XDA Premium HD app
Well the crack is heading from the bottom and arches up to the side. I'd take a picture of it but I only have my phone's camera and it might be a little difficult to even get a picture of the crack with a mirror. So I assume it couldn't grow any more from that. (I hope.) I'm buying a few silicone cases right now. :x
Edit: managed to get a picture of it with my webcam. See that?
sorry to hear...
this is the first phone i bought insurance for.
hopefully my Belkin bumper and Zagg kit will be in by the 27th so i can some level of protection on it. but would either have been able to prevent an impact fracture like that? i kinda doubt it. the bumper should make a it a bit less slippery at least.
i'd get insurance, while you can, if you're going to keep the device for a couple years i'm sure you'll have a good reason to call it in before all is said and done. either due to physical damage from being dropped one too many times or heck, just to replace the non-replaceable battery.
NOTE: BestBuy insurance = $10/mth over 24mths OR $170 if paid up front.
At first I wasn't considering insurance, but now I am definitely going to get it after seeing the crack. So when I get it, will I be able to play off the situation of my phone or will they look at it first and determine that it can't be replaced without a fee? I feel like I should've put this in Q&A with all the questions I have. :x Didn't think I had so many. Just wanna make sure so I don't **** myself over lol.
I am not sure how they will proceed as far as wanting to see the phone first. I wish you all the best with it !!
If they won't do it, some people have said that by putting a screen protector on it that usually keeps the crack from spreading. ( I noticed it is on the back, it should still work) Regards.
The crack isn't on the Gorilla 2, it's across the plate beneath it. So I'm hoping it just stays as is and doesn't fracture any further.

My sympthies
We've all been there, done that. If they got a dollar for everytime they tried selling someone insurance to go with their phone but that person said "it's fine. i won't drop it", they'd be able to retire. I've been one of those people. Which is actually why I'm on this phone now instead of my Galaxy S3 haha
Good luck. One thing that bugs me is often the insurance doesn't cover drops.
If you can get best buy insurance I'd go for it. The only thing they don't cover is lost or stolen I hear.

They might help you out with insurance at best buy. If not, you'd need to get something like square trade of zagg warranty or a competitor. Att insurance is a joke, 7.50/mo with a $200 deductible.

You just need to go in with the original receipt and say you want to add insurance. You don't have to show the phone then. Wait a week and then have the phone replaced. Done it twice.

Or instead of scamming the insurance, you could just live with the purely cosmetic crack and have better karma. Just saying...

Never mind I should have just not posted. Just annoys me seeing threads about how to scam insurance. And, yes, getting insurance after something is broken is a scam.
But regardless, I'll shut up now. Everyone can flame away.
Sent from my LG-E970 using Tapatalk 2
My thread isn't about scamming insurance, it was asking if I should ignore it and get a case or get the cases plus insurance so I'd be protected from further harm to my phone. Being snarky to posters because I asked for suggestions is unnecessary. I've never bought insurance for a phone before, and it just so happens that since there's a small crack I can't have insurance at all. Wonderful.

Oh yuck! I am soooo paranoid I am going to break mine, I just got it tonight and the protector is coming in the mail. I might leave it at home and just keep using the Droid 4 in the mean time until it comes in.
Have you seen if there are any "phone fix it" shops that can replace the glass that is cracked? (I am assuming it is the glass that is cracked and not the screen itself, right?) My coworker dropped his Rezound and shattered the glass and got it replaced for a little over $100. Granted, the Rezound is a smaller phone, but it might not be much more. It will be cheaper than a new phone, that's for sure. Also, my IT manager just cracked his GS3 and replaced the glass himself with a heatgun and only spent $27 for the new glass and the tools needed, if you think you can do it yourself.
Unfortunately, I cracked mine as well. Landed face flat on a concrete floor as I was pulling it out. I didn't have my case on like a moron, so it's my own fault. Because I don't have insurance I was planning on calling Samsung to see how much the repair would cost, but I'm worried about the price because of the Wacom digitizer. It'd also make repair from local shops harder to do. What do you guys think?
I just contacted Samsung for a friend a couple weeks ago and the screen repair with parts and labor was just over 190 bucks. You can get a quote using the Samsung online chat, just have your emei number ready because they use that to generate the quote.
Edit: He already got his phone back and it appears they just gave him a new one. I think he was only without it like 10 days or so.
I know how you feel. Mine fell out of my purse when I got out of the car. I had on a wallet style case that leaves the top and bottom exposed. It flew open when it dropped. The chrome ring has a huge ding and screen crack on the bottom right. Everything works fine. It's just painful emotionally.
Here's what I found. Radio Shack can repair them. It has to be sent out. $70.00 to $90.00 for the glass, the chrome would be a little extra. Takes a couple weeks. They offer a lifetime warranty against defects (not droppage).
Another local cell phone company can do it on site. You pay a deposit, they order the parts and get them within 2 days, $290.00.
I didn't check with Samsung, but from this thread, it looks like it's worth checking with them also.

Just get on eBay you can get the glass and digitizer for around $200. Then its easy to fix from there. Also I suggest an urban armor gear case, I dropped mine from about chest level it bounced and landed face down I thought for sure it broke. Picked it up the case has a few scuffs but the phone is perfect plus this case isn't as bulky as otter box.

If you have always carried insurance with verizon, i would ask to speak with a supervisor. I have had insurance with vzw since the blackberry days. When i purchased a thunderbolt off contract a couple of years ago, i activated it in the store and the rep took my insurance off my line. A few months later the phone fell and broke. I was told i did not have insurance and i made mention that i have always carried insurance. The end result was they added insurance back on my line and vzw sent me a replacement phone.
