Shaking my phone turns it off - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a weird issue with my vibrant. When I shake it turns off. I never had a problem with my phone before this is a first. Could it be a manufacturing problem? And if i take it to T-Mobile what could they do for me?
Only reasonable thing might be the battery moving, but thats weird...

lol... i find it funny sorry
so you just SHAKE IT and it turns off?
Yep, call TMOBILE tell them the issue, get a replacement, if its under 30 or is it 60? days you get a brand new phone, Vibrant.
If its over that, you get a REFURB, which MAY have problems, but if it does.. you just call em again and do the same thing for another Refurb.
There ya go.

I found it funny too. I know for sure they'll give me a refurb that I know I'll hate. TMobile will only give refurb replacements correct? Because I sure as hell would like to get a different phone from them. Using my phone as credit or something then paying off the difference if thats possible.
Shaking it and dropping it hard on a desk turn it off.

Stick a piece of cigarette pack alongside the edge of battery. Works every time.

Yes or roll a piece of paper tape to slightly bigger than the crack between the battery and the housing, then insert. This also can be done on the back should that be necessary--------

its like when someone goes to the doctor and says "Doc my arm hurts when i do this" and the Doc replied "then don't do that"
So my suggestion is Don't shake it.
Or just get a one of those extended battery gizmo. it may just do the trick.
Cheers!

LOL, I'm sorry but this is great. Can OP please add a pole of how many people actually started shaking their phone after reading OP. I did
Heres my results:

Still werks!

As others have said, a folded piece of paper between the battery and the back case will fix you right up. I had the same issue ;-)

need your opinion on what my problem is.

ok so i have a tmobile tp2 and been having it since the first week it was released.
for the pass couple of days the call, home, and back buttons wont function like they need to.
also when i slide my keyboard up the screen goes completely black even when i close my keyboard, the only way to fix it somewhat is to keep pushing the sleep/wake button untill it turns back on.
my guess is that maybe something like a cable became loose and is causing it to have these problems, and i just wanted to hear what you guys have to say about it, or what you think the problem is and what you would recommend to fix it because i cant afford to buy a new phone for quite awhile.
Posting in the Accessories forum might not be your best shot at an answer.

Sounds like an app running to me. Even File Explorer (when searching the Windows folder) can cause my phone to hang for a long time. I would check in task manager to see if something is running. You can also try and app called "Clean Ram", it works great. The other option is a hard reset, to ruke out software issues. It could be harware, but I doubt it.

Very true.
It's likely a loose cable as you presumed. Hopefully you still have time left on your warranty.
I hate to be the oen to say it, but it sounds like your ribbon cable is going.... My son had the same thing happen on his Kaiser/Tilt (Grandpa to this Phone)... It started like you said... then got worse over the matter of a few weeks... His screen woudl only work when it was closed... the buttongs on the screen housign stopped working properly... then his memorycard reader (it was in teh screen part on that phone) went nuts... got to the point where that phoen was basically useless... I hope that isn;t your problem, but it sounds like it..

yeah i can pretty much say that it is the cable since i could still slide my keyboard but the screen just looks fuzzy like and when i close it, it takes time to adjust back to normal. so basically now its just an all touch screen phone to me now... sort of sucks since i miss using the keyboard so much.
and yeah the buttons got worst now to a point where none of them worked but somehow the back button started working again so thats the only button that does work now.
and a new problem started occuring in the last few days, the screen would turn on by itself with even a slight bump around where the battery is located, it really sucks for me cause it kills my battery faster and it just starts opening up random apps while its in my pocket.
I would like to hear what finally happened. People don't forget we are using WM phones. So no matter what the problem, hard reset before deciding!

wow super late response to this.
but my final verdict is that it was the flex ribbon cable that is the issue.
my TP2 doesnt even show anything no more, its still functional but you just cant see whats goin on with the screen because its like its turned off.
it stopped working on me on dec 25,2010 (what a great present from the phone, huh?) to how i described it.
so now im using my sisters old HTC dream, but even this one is starting to have an issue with the ribbon cable too! i just get bad luck with these phones now i guess.
edit: oh yeah i still have my Rhod210 just sitting on my desk till i get it fixed... oh how i miss my TP2!
Another late response then
Fixed it yet, have you?
this occasionally happens to my phone too, that it, the screen blanks out sometimes. the cause in my case is pocket lint. since it's hayfever season, i carry tissues in my pocket which kind of disintegrate to confetti after a while. while my tp2 is in my pocket, these tissue particles tend to get in behind the ribbon cable and cause some kind of blockage. by just blowing in around the ribbon cable area, it tends to clear out those fluffy bits and the screen is working again. so don't carry tissues in your pocket with your tp2

i actually took the time to open up the touch pro2 all the way today for a full diagnosis on it, and i was right. it was the cable. where the cable is exposed when it tilts, it looks like it sort of got stripped around that area. im not sure how but it left part of the cable exposed which im guessing is whats causing it to have the issue. i was taking a couple of pictures as i was disassembling it, but i forgot to take a picture of the cable itself to show you what i mean. maybe ill disassemble it again tomorrow so i can take a pic! =)
but yeah im still using the g1, and i finally fixed it! (ended up bricking a g1 so i used the other as replacement parts on it) but hopefully not for long cause graduation is tomorrow for me, and i MIGHT end up getting a new HTC phone as a graduation present from the family. so i hope that does happen!
ok so i reopened the touch pro 2 and took a pic of the cable to show you what i ment.

Could i get this replaced?

I bought my Eris off of a friend who bought it from Verizon. so im not the original owner. But when i bought it he thought it was broken because it wouldnt turn on but for a sec (long enough to see 3 androids skateboarding for like a half second) and then turn off. Turns out it was just the battery ($20 for the phone, another $18 for batteries, i got a deal ) but before we realized it was the battery, i went all surgeon on it and took it apart to see if the charge port was loose (the battery wouldnt charge) in the process i ****ed up the track ball and the microphone (still worked, just mic would go in and out, and trackball only scrolls left and right.) Now the microphone has stopped working completely, could i call verizon and say my microphone doesnt work anymore and they replace it? Or would they not do that because im not the original owner/the phone has been taken apart (of course i wouldnt tell them that, but would i have to send them the phone first, thus they discover it had been)
The warranty is void if the phone has been taken apart (yeah they could tell real easy). Besides, the warranty doesn't transfer if the phone is sold to someone else. Only the original purchaser has the warranty. Sorry but seems like your screwed. Good thing you didn't put too much money into the phone.

Alright :\ thanks for the info, im due an upgrade so i guess i better start savin up for the droid 2. back to the Touch Pro for now :'( lol
Was this a question or wishful thinking? I'm pretty certain that they have a very tiny sticker on there somewhere that says if it is removed that your warranty is void, and you have to take that sticker off to take the phone apart because one of the screws in below it. I recall seeing it when I was considering taking one of many of my Eris's apart to fix the track ball issue.
a little bit of both, however the piece of black adhesive over the screw on mine said nothing, it was just black plastic with adhesive backing. its alright tho, incidentally after leaving it off for a week, i picked it up to play with it and the microphone works again. so whatever, ill use the wonky thing til it freaks out on me again i suppose, or til i get the droid 2 in white

[Q] Atrix not powering on

My atrix won't power on (dropped in water); I have had it in dried rice, placed in a zip bag, and sun dried....before all that I immediately removed the battery and shook out whatever water i could. I've waited a full day but still no luck; if I remove the battery and plug in to PC with battery removed I get green LED but other than that I get nothing (for example if I switch to wall charger immediately the LED goes out). If at worst case I need a replacement, how difficult would it be to have this done without the AT&T purchase receipt (I'm not an AT&T customer)? I purchased the item on eBay a little over a month ago. I've read in forums to unroot before attempting return but that's not gonna happen (lol). My girlfriend hates that I even got an atrix so she's kinda happy this happened...a little off topic here, but I really love my atrix so can someone please help me out?!

Well, no help cuz no solution is available. Your phone is screwed and if it fell into water, the water seals must be screwed up as well and guarantee is void.
Think about it
Well the green LED comes on when plugged into USB like I said...but other than that nothing...I can't find the OEM charger adapter of all the times to be lost. I guess since other threads were successful in revival I would have hoped I would get lucky. Thank you for your reply.
They will know it's been in water by the sensors. They will also know you didn't buy from them. Best bet is insurance if you have it, but I think you are out of luck.

i jumped in the river about 2 weeks ago and completely forgot i had my atrix in my pocket. i would say it was about a good 5 mins underwater. Water damage sign appeared on atrix as well as battery. (red dot). i did the rice thing too..but nothing. unless you're insured..which i was..theres nothing you can do. sorry for your loss.
Does anyone have a general idea of how much it would cost to have the board replaced then?

Cheaper to buy a new phone!
You're guessing/assuming it is the board/just the board.

Actually I sat and thought about it and there's the fingerprint and camera to also take into consideration, as well has other functionalities just didn't post. I'm in between studying Windows Server 2008 , watching TV, and just randomly doing other things. Thanks to you all for your help though. I may just try to find an atrix with just a broken screen or just forget about it all together. I've only had the phone for 3 weeks but stuff happens, consider it $500 down the drain .
Disassemble it, take a look at it, remove the corrosion manually. Use a heatgun on the components, but dont overheat it. Afterwards put together and check if battery still has power with a multimeter. Reassemble and plug into wall charger. See what happens

I say this is your best bet. Try this, or get someone with some electronics knowledge to take a look.
It beats just tossing it.
Either that or put it up on ebay and try to recoup some money. someone with a broken screen, or camera might want to buy it for parts.

My SGS2 internally imploded this morning (or something like that)

I plugged my eleven-day-old Galaxy S II up last night to the Samsung charger connected to the Samsung AC adapter that came with it. I then put it underneath the pillow beside me (not the pillow I sleep on; I do this so that I don't knock it off during the night) and went to bed. When I went to grab it this morning, the phone pretty much burnt my hand. I dropped it quickly and let it cool down for a moment. I had no success with turning it on and, when I got back from school, still had no luck. I ended up taking it back and exchanging it for another one.
It really doesn't bother me that much considering the volume up button on the other one stuck a little. And now I can't get CWM to flash on this one. It seems like nothing is going right for me today.
Woah!!
Definitely gotta be careful with that. These phones do need to breathe in a sense but glad it wasn't worse and you were able to return it. I bet you won't do that one again.
Yeah, definitely do not charge any electronic device while under a pillow because charging generates heat and there is no way for the heat to escape while it's under a pillow, so it builds up. As for flashing CWM, what happens when you use odin?
Sent from my SGS II.
The exact same thing happened to me w a NS4G, never again.
That happen to me but not to that extent, i did it all the time with other phones but I guess I should avoid doing that from now on.
It happened to me a couple of times with different phones. I think when I checked the temp it was like 127F lol
By far this phone is the hottest device i have. The thin profile of the phone can't really dissipate the heat that well. But anyway sorry to hear this about your phone. Good luck with fixing things.

Sounds like a faulty battery pack or charging hardware in the phone - for safety reasons, charging of Li-Ion batteries is suspended if the pack reaches 50C (122F) or less. It sounds like either your pack has a faulty temp sensor or your phone did not terminate charge when the temp rose too high. (I assume that Samsung has such termination circuitry onboard as they would never receive certifications otherwise). You are very lucky, as Li-Ion batteries have a propensity for exploding/catching on fire when overheated during charge.

I think Im going to run an auto-script that looks for people saying they use Rom Manager (or try to use it because it sucks and never works right) and then give them an automatic infraction.

Just weed out any cm7 threads though as it works perfectly. I understand your point though.
Also when we first got these phones and this issue came up i was able to get it to work with the samsung based roms and made a video to show how. Feel free to delete it if you want to. Dont want people to get confused...

I left mine under the pillow one night - woke up the next morning and was wondering why "This thing is HOT!". It wasn't ruined but I never leave it under the pillow charging anymore. This is why they made night stands LOL.

SGSIII took a 2ft. fall, and now is NLW. TWO FEET! Can anything be done?

Dropped from my night stand to the floor. Even has a case on it. Will no longer turn back on, tried everything possible. I'm a little confused, I know the phone wasn't made from the greatest material, but this is a little ridiculous. I pre-ordered it for $750 a couple weeks before release, I can't accept that my investment is ruined from a very minor accident.
Probably a long shot, but can anybody think of what could have possibly happened inside the phone that could cause this non-operation? Perhaps something came loose or just broke off? I'm so desperate, I just might disassemble the whole thing and put it back together out of hopelessness. I'm going to contact the UK Samsung soon as I can and see if there is anything I can do, but I doubt that will get anywhere. See I KNEW the ONE time I didn't buy an Otterbox for my phone, something like this would happen. The SGSIII is just too damn big for an Otterbox.

Yup did it all, even brought it into AT&T and they tried putting a different battery in it from another SGSIII. Nothing comes on, no LED, no sounds. Very strange, the only thing I can possibly think is that it is defective because no phone in existence should stop working so easily.

Any updates?
Definitely request a replacement, had mine drop from really long distances and had no scratches / still functions perfectly.
I've heard of Galaxy S3s suddenly losing power altogether ie. totally unable to power on etc. My telco CSO told me that it was a hardware defect found in the first batch of phones. That might be your problem and the fall could just be a coincidence. Definitely request for a replacement. And maybe get an Otterbox this time? I'm using a Commuter and I don't find it too bulky at all! Cheers.

I've yet to get ahold of the UK Samsung, as the US Samsung doesn't handle the GT-I9300. My backup phone has an issue calling the international number, so as soon as I get another phone I'll have to give them a call and see what they can do.

That would make a lot of sense, seeing as a lot of other people have had their share of drops with the SIII and it still works fine, as most of todays smartphones should. I really hope Samsung will be able to do something about it, I recently lost one phone I just bought in the mail (sent to wrong address, stolen off porch, $430), and if I lose this one that's about $1200 in phones in the past 2 months.
