[Q] Galaxy Tab 10.1 Retail Bootloader, Locked, Unlocked, or Unlockable? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if the retail Galaxy Tab 10.1 (US) will have a Unlockable or Unlocked bootloader? Or will it be signed or encrypted like oh so many others?
We all know the I/O Edition one is unlocked out of the box, but I would like to know others speculation or knowledge of the subject, thxs.
Really hoping its unlockable like my Xoom's so then we don't have to wait for Samsung to release their delayed updates with Touchwiz and junk like that.

i purchased the 10.1v and it had an easily unlockable bootloader. id be surprised if they changed it back to old ways for the new version, but i suppose everyone will only be able to see once they actually get their hands on one.
The only hope is that samsung have realised that one of the things that will help this tablet fly is customisability.

I would have thought it they'd leave it the same as the I/O version.

I highly doubt they would leave the retail version unlocked, even my Xoom was locked when I bought it and I had to unlock it using a fastboot advanced command which caused the warrenty to be voided. I hope they atleast leave it unlockable like the Xoom.

So can anyone with a retail tab confirm if the bootloader is locked and if it is unlockable. Also if it is locked is there any work around? Tying go decide if I should keep my Xoom or return it in the next two days.

as stated, it is locked up tight.
there is odin access, but i could not get a flash going (although it passes verification).

Wow I hate Samsung. Once again they ruin an otherwise great product, there really is no reason at all that they need to lock a wifi only tablet. Oh well just gunna keep my Xoom and wait for Kal-el. Touche Samsung.
Edit: Just curious, what method does Samsung use to lock their bootloaders, are they encrypted or signed or what?

Yea, this is a big letdown. My Tab may be on its way back to Best Buy if nothing changes around the time of widespread launch on the 17th.

so no simple unlock? and i thought that samsung was promoting the dev community. i wonder why they would leave the bootloader unlocked on the 10.1 io and 10.1v and then lock the 10.1 retail

What a disappointment! I thought maybe supercurio was working with the retail version, and we would be able to do things like calibration of the screen to tone down the oversaturation. The locked bootloader + lack of micro SD slot = too locked down. Probably time to consider the Transformer again...

so for the immediate future we can expect to not have very much development going on im guessing... makes me lean towards getting the xoom

there's a reason it's $100 cheaper than the other tablets. high quality isn't one of them.
i'm on my third. if the gt10.1 can be unlocked i'd be on it... i still may get one tomorrow and decide which to keep.

why dont you guys post on samsungs facebook and twitter page like the HTC fans did.

Transformer is really too much hype. Build quality is so so and I already returned mine. Very disappointed.

I am going to pick up the Tab tomorrow at Best Buy. What do u guys think the chances are it is going to be rooted before the 14 day return policy runs out?
I too am very disappointed.

I received mine today and its unlocked by default

I purchased the 32 GB GT10.1 (grey back) and it came with an unlocked bootloader. I didn't notice at first, but I saw an article saying some were unlocked, so I rebooted just now and saw the unlocked lock.

Might be getting one today from best buy (im on holiday in the US ) How do you check if it's locked or unlocked?

When it boots look for the unlocked pad lock on the bottom middle of the screen. If it is there then it is unlocked.

SGSII Impressions? Bootloader state (on US carriers)?

So, with the Evo 3D's bootloader locked down and with the SGSII conformed coming to sprint, it looks like my choice is clearly the SGSII or the Nexus S. You may ask yourself why I am even considering the NS over the SGSII? Simple question, what do you guys think (this is why I'm here asking this question)? I think it's safe to say the NS is a pretty solid phone, so how about the SGSII? How has it been running for you guys?
I've heard different things, such as battery issues and GPS issues, but this could be because it was posted on the EVO 3D's forum (major bias a possibility).
Also, my question on the bootloader. Is there a chance that the bootloader will get locked (similar to how the EVO 3D's got locked) when it makes the jump to the US? The bootloader being locked is why I crossed off the EVO 3D from my list; I simply can't live with a stock phone.
On a side note, I also heard somewhere that there was a case made for the SGSII that will fit ALL American derivatives, meaning the carries can't mess with the design (I love the current design, so this is a huge plus too)
So, I have two questions (if you didn't figure out what they were already):
1. Will the bootloader be affected by the transfer to the US carriers (specificially sprint)?
2. Are there any nagging problems that I should be aware of? On the other hand, are there any things you absolutely love on this phone that aren't on other phones ?
Thanks!
Well Nexus S it is ;-)
May I ask why?

Where is this confirmation?
Why would you want to buy a phone with last years hardware? I wouldn't even touch any phone that didn't have 1gb of ram and a dual core cpu nowadays.
Lol you don't need a hackable phone. I'm pretty sure htc and samsung are 2 different companies. Bootloader policy's are different.

My biggest two gripes keeping me from using the SG2?:
1. Most web sites are displayed as mobile versions (despite its 'fantastic PC-like web experience'. No 'user' option (desktop, ipad etc). Hate that. Yeah you can use another browser but Gingerbread stock is fastest. Dumb Samsung.
2. Charging rate is r e a l l y slow. When using device on charger...it won't charge!
No good for me.

Hows RAZR's development future looking so far?

I'm trying to decided between the Galaxy Nexus and the Droid 4.
I'm assuming Droid4 and RAZR will have the same exact hardware and therefore be pretty much interchangeable ROM wise. Is this correct?
If that is the case I'm heavily leaning toward the Droid 4 but it depends on 2 things.
1. With the "removable back", the battery being accessible without removing glued on case components(just screws)
2. The developer support for the RAZR/Droid4 being sizable despite the locked bootloader.
Thoughts?
The developer support is still growing and I think we will be satisfied in the end. But is not a nexus though.
There are some things happening already, for example someone have been able too boot ICS.
Also the bootloader will be unlocked when Moto releases ICS.

No, I'm sorry didn't think of Veri.
Moto said that they would unlock the bootloader if the operator is okay with it. So it's up to Verizon, and what I have heard they probably won't allow it.

After doing some brief research on this, I read that the unlock tool that is released with the ICS update abroad will "probably" allow developers to unlock the Verizon RAZR. Is this actually likely?

Likely? Probably not, but it might be possible for a dev to reverse engineer or figure it out...
Lots of IFs, but with Safestrap out now and devs working on roms, after we get FXZ or SBF, we will have a great device with lots of options for ROMs.
1. IIRC, the Droid 4 will also lack a removable battery.
2. ICS might not be released until May or June. By then the Razr will be an "old" phone, so it might not really take off with developers if it does not build momentum in the next 2-3 months while it is still "new."
-but from the looks of it the development of the Razr seems to be really starting to take off.
3. In terms of user base, the one thing that really helped the Razr was the 1 cent Amazon Wireless deal. It was the top phone available on Verizon at the time, so I'm sure that built a good base of users- but maybe not the type of users who develop ROMs.

The Droid 4, there is some question as to whether the phone will have a removable battery or not.
The test units were not sent with the case removal tool that was seen on the spec sheet that was released today.
I haven't seen a new confirmation on the removable battery yet, and Motorola never confirmed anything on this front.

That is of course IF - and this is a big IF, the Razr's bootloader gets unlocked before that. And judging by what I have seen, it doesn't take that long if the phone is a flagship phone... Correct me if I am wrong

The boatloader won't get unlocked. You'll see a workaround, like a 2nd-init, or something along those lines, but Verizon won't allow unlocked boatloaders, and Motorola is going to comply with Verizon's desire to keep the boatloader in lockdown.
That won't stop development, and ASOP ROM's which is what Droid Th3ory is working on, an ASOP ICS port.
mhhh but the Atrix have unlocked bootloader, why only that moto have that luck?
Atrix is on at&t. The carrier designates whether the boatloader stays locked or not. It isn't moto's decision.

Very good question. Why don't you ask them? It would be interesting to hear their reply.
Well it looks like dev on this phone is dead!
I mean they have already released ICS 4.0.2 for the vzw GN and we ain't got **** yet!!
Looks like I'm going to have give this phone the wifey and go get me a GN.
Don't get me wrong I love the phone but no dev spt is a bummer!
...What are you talking about. The Nexus shipped with ICS in the first place, of course it got it before we did. And it got 4.0.2 update 2 hours later straight from Google. That has nothing to do with Dev support.
And naturally, since it's a Nexus device, it's gonna get ages more dev support than any other phone. But we are getting places ourselves. DroidTh3ory released RAZRX two days ago. He's working on ICS right now. We got Safestrap 2 days ago. Once we get the FXZ files we're probably going to get like 200x the support we're getting right now. Not to mention the Nexus' hardware which is composed of fantastic innards, but a plastic, easy-to-chip case, normal glass screen with minimal scratch resistance, & a weak radio.
It boggles me how you can say dev support is dead with all of the stuff that's LITERALLY happened in the past two days.

I posted this somewhere else, there's really 2 reasons for this:
1) Google required that the Nexus come "open".
2) In the agreement to carry the phone, essentially Samsung & Google have taken over support for the phone, to the point where the contract, while through Verizon, is actually supported by Google, and therefore they can dictate the bootloader.
That's what I could gather from reading up on how the Nexus came to be a Verizon phone. There were some pretty heavy negotiations here, and Verizon didn't want Sprint to get the phone, and couldn't stand to have another Iphone/Att&t exclusive situation happen again.
Now, for Moto, they are already heavily tied to Verizon, and so they have no leverage for getting their devices to be released as open.
They even were first (I believe) to start saying they wanted open phones, back when the xoom was released. They made a statement that by late 2011 they were going to release all their phones with unlocked bootloaders like the xoom was......that didn't happen because Verizon threatened to pull the phones if they did that.
Verizon even forced HTC to remove it's bootloader unlock tool on the web, if I'm not mistaken.
So it's really not Moto's fault, it's Verizon's, and the Nexus is going to be the way it is because Google has control, not Verizon.
yeah except the nexus ships locked and is unlockable through adb.

So what you're saying is we'll get a ICS Rom from developers long before any Verizon update to ICS.....right? Because waiting till June is absurd! This phone is just too friggin good to not get some attention......is my opin,anyway....

Sad at how inactive this section of the XDA forums are. When presented with the opportunity to get a Galaxy Tab 8.9 or an HTC Jetstream for cheaper, I feel I should've first spent some time scoping out the modding community on these tablets before committing to a purchase. Why is HTC Jetstream development dead when we have unlocked bootloaders and root? Are we waiting for something to happen or just developers? Just even more users in general, perhaps?
I am an active developer/programmer with 5+ languages under my belt, products including Android/iPhone apps, but I've never attempted kernel and/or ROM development and honestly wouldn't know where to start.
Would love for ICS to be on this beast... it's still very nice hardware. Not as slim as the Galaxy Tab, but still a beast.
the main problem is that when the device was new it was expensive. so very little people actually bought it.
the community was tiny, but we got two developers to come. task650 and doomlord.
they mainly came because there a was a bounty for rooting the device. after that occured, they vanished. can't blame them.
i think that now there are alot more users but none of which are developers.
so we're screwd. perhapes HTC will be nice enough to update the device to ICS one day...
I still check in here everyday, but am never surprised to see that nothing new is there. I do remember capychimp had popped in and said he wanted to do a rom, but I never heard anything back from him.
At&T software update at the end of january is very helpful. Doomlord help a lot with root and recovery, kernel. We have got unlocked bootloader. I've paid almost 900$ to got this device from AT&T without contract with scribe pen and I unlocked it for 25$ so I was able to use here in my country Hungary, successfully rooted, updated, debloated. Now HTC please update to 3.2 or ICS. Or somebody please make s-off
Galaxy tab 10.1 3G 16gb is 500$ simfree here in my country so Jetstream for 900$ very expensive
Galaxy tab 8.9 3G 440$ sim free
Like galaxy s2 is 500$

Well, I am a capable and willing developer, but I also have a full time job. And I understand the bounty, don't blame them either. I don't require the bounty for motivation though for getting ICS on this since I own it. I just don't believe I could set aside enough time or have enough know-how around custom ROM development to lead a project. Though, like I said, very willing to help.

Eek, $900 is very expensive... I got it in a deal where you could get a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket for free if you got the Galaxy Tab 8.9. Asked if it applied to the HTC Jetstream as well, and they agreed. So I got that one instead since it was a bit cheaper, under contract of course.

Seems Task650 and CarpeNoctem have released their custom roms. May be you could break heads with them and help bring out a really good release and may be even try out for ICS. Here is hoping for the best.
I got the Jetstream for $699 off contract as bought it on Black Friday sale. Getting it sim free costed me $25 - so in all spent $724 which amounts to close to Rs. 36000 as I live in India. Spent another Rs. 8000 ($ 40) for the screen gaurd and a gel case though. Comparing it with Galaxy Tab that was available around same time for Rs. 33000 ($660), I still find the Jetstream a big bargain considering its specs and the Scribe pen which has been a big boon for me. Yes of course have to wait for upgrades, etc which can get frustrating but I really do not mind as even the stock device solved a lot of my time and helped a lot. Anything more is like a bonus. Thanks to HTC for this wonderful device and thanks to all the developers in the community who are trying their best to make this device even better than it is.

Yes very expensive. I bought it last year October almost after official luanch from AT$T retail store. I live in Hungary so I need it without commitment. I paid 849$ + tax for it and I didnt got the free scribe pen I paid 25 for the unlock and I use it here in Hungary and worked perfectly for me.
Im worked for a GSM service company. We will repair, service, update, unlock, cell phones and much more so I will bought the scribe pen and accessories from my wholesealer very cheap and Im very happy with my tablet but software support is a little bit dissapointing for me:S I hope soon we will get ICS or some OS upgrade.
Waiting for S-OFF!!!!
I think ICS will put this tablet to Heaven Strong hadware, good screen...

ASUS Has Not Provided Service Centers With Recovery Tools

I sent my tablet in for an RMA for it being bricked with a hard brick. This is a software problem, yet they emailed me the details of the repair and said the motherboard needed to be replaced. I emailed the technician and she said that Asus has not provided them with the tools to make software repairs, and the only fix for software problems currently is replacing the whole board. The price this was said to cost was over $300 compared to the around $60 that a software repair would cost. I think it is ridiculous that Asus can't get it together and provide these service centers with the correct tools to fix problems. You don't get a dent in your car and then buy a whole new car. You just pop out the dent. I guess Asus doesn't understand that kind of logic.
that is a shame. for that much money you might as well buy a new tablet. I would complain to them about that and see if they could lower that price, by alot.
Is this a brick caused by you? or was this something that happened updating prime with one of the OTA Firmwares?
It was caused by me. Unlocked, installed rom and got brick 2. but she said she could give me a 10% discount. So at least she cared! but I had her return it to me and I bought a squaretrade warranty.
If they gave unbrick tools to the service centers, how long do you think it would take for them to leak to XDA?

As long as there is no big revenue from losing warranty, I will not unlock the bootloader. Stock ROM works flawlessly for me. On my phone, on the other hand, I like to play with bleeding edge software.

And would have held off getting a 2nd gen tablet had my wife not kept tempting me and tell me to buy the Prime (evil woman knew she was getting my TF101 when I did upgrade).

Jep. I'm totally fine as long as i have root. Ads are what makes Android laggy sometimes.
But it would be nice to have a recovery tool for software issues. You never know what happens^^ You want to reset batterystats.bin and accidentally delete some other file? It would just be nice to know that there is some way to recover from such positions. But i'm sure it will come eventually. Right now this is Asus flagship device. I can imagine that when the infinity tab and t300 get released they may be less "protective" of the Prime And NVflash is up to nvidia i think? Hey why sell it. Isn't it a great hardware? I bought it coz it's cheaper than the nexus 6p. Much better with great display, blitzing fast, outstanding camera. Plus those curved screens OMG people will go crazy and I'll stand out of the crowd. Don't u think so? Let me know how has ur experience been. Thanks a ton.

Yeah it's a great phone. If you are a grandma with Alzheimers and don't know what rooting is. I have it. I use it to lure theives into my place so I can shoot them. I post pictures on Craigslist of it sitting on my front door step. so far Ive had a dog knock my trashcan over... no way to root it man. they've had scientists working on it for months. so far. we've found that Verizon stuck a big FU on it and then charged $770 for and then just for fun they call to remind you that there are companies such as straight talk that charge a fraction of the price and your bill is due. if you can't pay. too bad you can't take your s6 edge plus to another company cuz they love you so much and if you look at that other phone they will slap the piss out of you in public. basically you bought an overly insecure girlfriend in the form of a phone. but hey at least you can't expand the memory with a micro sd right?! I couldn't trade it for a rock being dropped on my foot. ENJOY!
Lol you are hilarious. I bought the phone for 350, its just gorgeous. Would have loved the root which I miss. However its a steal at 350 given the hardware stupendous phone, display, style and camera unmatchable in the hardware section. I bought it unlocked so I can use it anywhere
Hope Verizon unlocks bootloader soon... Cheers...

Yeah I have been hoping for a while. actually I do have a question concerning it and not sure who to ask. If i were to swap the logic board with say a t mobile one would I be able to root it? I know this would basically make it t mobile phone but then i could root it. I found one craigslist for 100. not too hard to do either. I've replaced the screens on a bunch of galaxy phones. and not the cheap two sided tape either but the UV glue and all.
Apparently Verizon S6 Edge variant already has a working root. Dont know why Plus model doesnt have. Looks to me that given it was expensive not many experts bought it and hence no root as developers and experts didnt buy it maybe.

Yeah you may have a point there but man am I hoping you're wrong. especially with the note 7 coming out at $100 more than the s6 edge plus. I will say the one thing that I have been upset not to see is the 16mp camera lately. it seems backwards as heck and I think some of the designers are smoking their own bath water at samsung... I can see the board room meeting now. "I have the absolute best idea ever! let's put a bad ass camera on this thing and then we'll throw away the micro SD slot so you can really only get a picture of Samsung waving and smiling! And then after everyone complains about it we'll bring back the SD slot and the S7 will come stock with a permanent bootloop animation of us flipping them off!" and then the CEO says "genius! and let's not bring back the big screen either. because the dumb asses who buy the s6 edge plus and get use to the big phone will then get the s7 and because it's smaller will drop it. leaving little pieces of glass all over the US and cutting the bastards feet. Get to is boys! next a I want to come out with a 3 in 1 laptop. first you have a tablet mode and then of course the laptop, but then randomly a baseball bat comes out an beats the living hell out of the user. The US will fall just like the south fell to the yankees when they introduced Twinkies and mobile homes."

im new at this whole thing. ive been trying for weeks and even months to try and find info on rooting this dang phone. So, it cant even be rooted with the bootloader unlocked?
Looks like. Mostly because not many people bought it because it was expensive and developers also didn't buy it. I'm sure it's easy for any seasoned developer to root it. But I don't know anyone. Anyways very happy for a price I bought it 350 bucks unlocked.

its unlocked? Bootloader is unlocked? or is the OEM unlock toggle checked in DEV options, some will assume because that's checked that its unlocked, Sorry to Burst your bubble but All premium phones at Verizon are unlocked for international use, meaning you can use other sim cards in them But I doubt the Bootloader is Unlocked from verizon
I'm gonna be buying a temp phone soon so I will be able to send mine to a dev if anybody is interested in trying to crack this device.
You got it.

I need root too.. i want to remove verizon screen when startup..
Even Verizon galaxy s7 has been rooted by the community. I don't think we can get root unless any big developer buys this. Till then enjoy the hardware and pray we might get root and better software experience
