[Q] why is my phone awake so much?? [SOLVED] - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey for all the time in the chart the screen was off, about 12 hours, my phone has been awake. I don't understand how though as I have frozen all the hubs, and wifi sharing. Do any of you have this problem? Thanks very much for any help.
Oh yeah I'm also running stock Rom with latest UK updates.
Thanks,
John

UPDATE: Yeah it is definately the facebook app that is the problem, now that i've uninstalled it i have only lost about 1~2% in the past 8 hours of idle time It seems that there is a problem with the official facebook app which keeps phones awake permanently, even when notifications are disabled within the app. It also seems to affect all android devices having done a few google searches of the issue. Now that I know what the problem is I may reinstall and have a fiddle about with it as I did really like the integration with the contacts list on my phone (display pictures auto appearing for all contacts, etc)
Thanks everyone for your suggestions and trying to help.

More important, what apps are installed. Can you post a list of your apps (appbrain) and/or a screenshot of battery graph and processes that used the battery.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App

Thanks for replying, here is my appbrain thing: [email protected]@com/user/jbm1991/apps-on-the-phone
I'll go and boost my post count and i'll post the screenshots shortly when i'm allowed too.
I have all of my widgets on manual sync aswell by the way (facebook, accuweather, battery monitor widget, the google search bar thing, and the active applications one)
thanks
John

Does battery monitoring widget or os-monitor show up in the list below the battery graph?
Edit: Or facebook, this has been reported to mess up sleep as well.

no, neither of them have ever shown up there. not even 1% worth.
John

I think I have the same issue, but it only happend after I updated my phone.
When I have my phone locked the screen stays on.

when your phone is locked the screen stays on?? so the display is on permanently? or does it just say it is on permanently in the battery thing?
For my phone it says the display is off, just that the phone is awake permanently.
quick update though, I restarted the phone and charged it up to 100% and ive just had a quick look at the battery thing and the awake solidly problem seems to have gone for now. So i presume it must be an app i've used which has some sort of problem when it comes to closing itself down and its keeping my phone awake for some reason.
John

Actually no, i tell a lie. I've just looked again and the graph has changed and is now reading the display as being on, even though it isn't, and the phone being awake for the past half an hour. which is how long its been running off this charge so far, still 100% though. hmm strange.

Here's the battery chart from earlier.

I uninstalled apps I had recently downloaded and froze some bloat.

Thats fixed it for me.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. wifi being on doesn't keep the phone awake for the record. The problem turned out to be the Facebook app, even though I had notifications disabled it was keeping my phone awake for no reason. So I've uninstalled it and my awake time is back to corresponding with my screen on time.
Thanks everyone.

I'd like to do that, too, but I still couldn't bring myself to rooting (still worried about the warranty with the custom counter)

I'm glad it worked for you, though my phone is hardly awake and I still have the fb app installed and it is set to sync every hour. That app is buggy like hell, maybe uninstalling it will give me even better battery life, who knows. If so, what's a good alternative to the fb app?

Seriously, root your phone, you won't regret it in the slightest. And you can just buy a jig off ebay for like 5 dollars or pounds or whatever which resets the ROM counter after you've reset and flashed the original non-rooted stock ROM which essentially revalidates your warranty. I was a bit aprehensive too, but using ChainFires guide it took me like 5 minutes and couldn't be easier.
As for an alternative to the facebook app, i've just bookmarked iphone.facebook.com in the web browser and stuck the bookmark as a link on my home screen. Works just as well, although no automatic notifications in the notification bar, you have to look manually on the web browser. But that's a sacrifice i'm willing to make seeing as facebook was destroying my battery life. I've been using my phone quite a bit today and i've only dropped about 10% so far.
But yeah, root your phone and freeze all the hubs and wifi sharing and wifi sharing manager and your battery life will get considerably better.
If you need a hand rooting give me a shout and i'll help
John

Something like "Seesmic" or "Tweetdeck" will allow you view facebook feeds...
If that helps any...
Also yeah, go for the root, its easy, safe (as long as you read the instructions) and can be reset with a jig. The benefits easily outweigh the negatives..

Facebook app has kept my nexus one awake for half a year now or more. Its been like that forever. Using system panel easily shows it.

[APP][4.0+][v0.3][20130118] DataDropFixer

Recently, data drop issue happened frequently in my evo3d with JB rom. Im getting more annoyed with this. And when it happened, the only thing to fix it is by turning mobile data off and then turn it on again. It is time consuming because from time to time, i have to check my phone for notification, and if no notification, i have to make sure that is it due to data drop issue. So i thought, i just create an app to simulate what im doing now as a workaround for this issue.
But, this is just initial release, don't expect more from it. After a day running, i have no data drop issue (actually, still happen, but before i notice, this app already fix it). This first release only to get the core functionality running. I will update this app for more feature and do some other optimization.
This app might use some additional data to 'ping' to internet every 'n' second.
Installation :
Download apk from attachment.
Install it like normal apk.
Open the app and click Start service
Enjoy..
Changelog :
v0.3 (20130118)
Added history view.
v0.2.3 (20130112)
Fix issue with screen orientation (force close). Now lock it in portrait mode.
Fix issue start on boot complete.
v0.2.2 (20130110)
Added interval type (seconds, minutes, hours)
Added start on boot (experimental)
v0.2.1 (20130109)
Fix issue setting lost upon reboot.
v0.2 (20130107) :
Added checking interval in setting tab.
Skip checking when connected through wifi.

Great idea and really useful for people that flashed a custom Sense or Jellybean ROM.

He kind of answered that in the OP. It is basically doing what one does manually, which is turning the internet off and on.
It is for what I understand always checking for internet connection, and when it does not find it, it restarts the process.
I will give this a try.
I do have one question though. What happens if you are in an area of no internet connection? Will it keep resetting, or does it stop trying after a bit?
I thought of the idea when I first got the issue but dont have my development laptop anymore so I couldn't make it. Thanks bro for making this app
Edit: So do this start automatically, so we don't have keep enabling after each reboot, or is that coming soon?
Gonna give this a go right now. Thanks for the app, I'll report my results.

For now, yes it will keep resetting the network. I already think about that but haven't implement it to the app. So, might consume more battery here. Maybe I'll add it in future.

Thanks for the idea. Haven't thought about that. I'll add that feature to start on boot. For now, still need to be turn on manually for each reboot.
And the ability to set the timespan between each check for data; virgin mobile throttles after 2.5gb. Right now it seems to check every 5 seconds.

Yeap, currently is set to 5 seconds. Will upload the latest apk with ability to modify interval between each checking later. Its already done, but pending testing. I've set it to 5seconds minimum and 60 seconds maximum. Is it okay to you or you have any other value in mind?
Sixty seconds is okay; though what about every hour or half a hour?

You should also have the settings(interval) stick(remember) after reboot, because right now they don't.

This app is a god sent.. I've always had to deal with these freaking data drops ever since i started flashing roms on the evo.. Thank you so much for sharing..
Petalyaa, for intervals, you could do it in minutes instead of seconds since data drops don't happen every minute. In the app code, just keep everything the same but times the original interval values by two.

Does Google maps find your location? Cause the nav is part of that app.
The google maps app finds me where ever I am.. the nav doesnt ever get gps info. It hangs for hours never connecting. Navigation the blue arrow on maps..I get no step by step directions voice. But the map connects I can see destination and directions list..

Try either clearing data from maps app in app manager (the bigger of the 2 files) or uninstalling and reinstallation of maps. Try the first and see what happens.

First things first, download gps status and see if you get a lock on some satellites and the data at the bottom refreshes, if not let us know.
which cleanROM? Weren't verizon note 2 users having problems with the univeral cleanROM and GPS? If so, I'd try the verizon specific cleanROM
Gps status no luck.. just hangs looking for sat signal. And its the 4.2 version of clean rom based off of international .. im cool with using map quest.. it works great. So does google maps just navigation sucks. Im stickin with the clean rom 4.2 pack for now. Just figured someone had a work around for no gps issue in nav. Thanks for responding guys

If you got nothing in GPS status then you have a GPS problem, not a navigation problem. Backup your rom, flash Beans, just get it far enough to download GPS status again, get a lock with all the relevant info at the bottom, then restore back to CR.
i was having this same exact problem, i switched to jelly beans now everything works fine

Yeah this. Idk how you're getting a maps lock and not a GPS status lock. But you need a solid lock for turn by turn to work. I was simply thinking you had a good lock. I always use GPS status to check lock and then proceed to use the others. What he suggested works. I did it back on clean rom 3.whatever and haven't had an issue since. However I also took Scotts advice and literally wiped everything about my phone when coming from beans. I'm talking Internal and external SD. Backed it up first of course. Somethjng between em doesn't play nice.

It works because maps will use the Cell towers and wifi to lock on alone, but many apps will require a true GPS lock (Ingress and the Nav app come to mind).
You don't have the experience or credentials to be claiming GPS is "broke". I hear this same stupid crap with every phone I get, and it's always someone like you.
It's not a Clean rom nor Note 2 issue. You're obviously doing it wrong. I don't see how some people have so many issues with phones. It's always noobs like you as well. Proof:

Man I understand the frustration...I do but there was a time even you didn't know jack about phones. Yeah maybe he should've searched but he didn't. No need to bash him so hard. Questions are how some people learn. Myself Included. I see so many high and mighty Devs who are too good to help people with problems yet have no problems bashing people. Its like the nerd in school who was a nobody and is now a somebody but with the worst possible attitude.
never claimed gps was broke, the phone just never picking it up,i never said i was a hacker or a phone programmer just wanted to get some phone freedom rom wise, thanks to the other guys (blackbass) and scott himself for helping out, i went to the verizon lite rom and it worked like a charm, i only brought it up here, because i remember reading awhile back in these forums, i honestly feel great that you took the time to root around in my profile, i feel better that you took the time to do that and not actually help, Blackbass you made a great call on deleting and reinstalling maps, did lock on faster to my local, but no dice on the navigation front.

Smart IR Remote for S4 taken down, want a refund? (AGAIN)

UPDATE Aug 13: The app has been removed from the playstore AGAIN
UPDATE JULY 31st: The app has been restore in the playstore, it seems as if the dev was not lying and has kept its promise
Well, the app has been taken down. I contacted the gev through email, facebook and G+ and he never answered. Samething happened to a few members so i have taken my issue with the boss (Google) and they were extremely fast to refund me. Literally 10 seconds after I clicked submit issue, they sent an email confirming me my complaint was accepted and the refund has been made. GREAT!!!
I would not request a refund for an app taken down unless i had issue with it, which i did, so because the dev never answered, here is how to do it for yourself if you feel you've been abandoned.
Log into your google account https://play.google.com/store/account and go to "My Orders and Settings"
Look for SmartRemote and hit "Report a problem", then select "I'd like to request a refund" and give them a brief explenation. Also, if the app serves you, please don't do this, do this only if you're having issues that the dev obviously wont repair because he has, as far as i know, abandonned us.

i'm not sure why, it's really hard to know when the devs cut all communication and doesn't tell anything to anyone. In any case, the apps works fine, just struggles with my specific devices and the dev promised it would be updated to work for my TV and AV but they never did and they stopped emails about 2 weeks ago. So got this refunded and bought TouchSquid which so far works just like i want it too, also it's much more sophisticated and for a limited time it's 12$
What a letdown. It was such a great app!

i had issues with this app on my s4. after selecting an action, lets say the volume up button, the app would continually trigger the IR, even if i wasnt pressing the volume up button anymore. this was obviously very annoying and required a phone reboot to clear everything up. this happened every time i used the app. the IR would continue flashing after the first button tap.
i've been using samsungs watchON. it took 15 seconds to set up my tv and uverse box and the remote works flawlessly. also, its free. much better remote functionality and layout.
This app pretty much sucks on my S4. A lot of the buttons are useless and when I try to use the center button that is usually associated for "enter" or "ok", it never works ever.
Requested a refund but it said they were unable to give me a refund. Another let down. Bah!

Really I think it might be because it's stupid powerful. I can walk into any store control/cable TV's walk into a bar etc just total havoc. And it don't just work on TVs. Also those that have issues with it still issuing IR commands when it's not on. Disable. Air gestures and the Dynamic Option it will not do that anymore. :good:

Doesnt make sense really as touchsquid allows all the same functions. I mean the watchon app bare minimum allows you to mess with just about most tv's in bars and stores.

So I finally got around to messing with my phone, and decided to see what it could really do for battery life! I'll try and be specific as possible about all of the tweaks that I've performed, but feel free to ask any questions as well.
To start out, my phone is rooted and is the Verizon version. Throughout the 50 hours, I was a little more conservative with usage than usual, but not overly so. I also used Titanium Backup to freeze and uninstall system app and VZW bloatware. In addition, I used a utility called 2x Battery that automatically turns off my 4G data when I turn my screen off, but enables it every 15 mins to pull down notifications. I also utilized wifi at home and kept the brightness fairly low (which I didn't find to be an issue because the screen visibility on this monster is great IMO). Another thing that I did was uncheck the 'Wi-Fi & Mobile Network Location in the Location Access Menu.
First of all, here is some proof! 50 Hours, 14 Minutes - With 6% battery left

The following are screenshots from the battery menu of the things that are taking the most battery. In order of how much battery they used, here they are:
Android System (33% battery usage)
Screenshot 1
Screenshot 2
Cell Standby (15%)
Screen (12%)
Android OS (10)
Ok, so that is what the top usage on my phone, and I'd like to list out the settings I changed in Titanium Backup. I guess I'll give the generic warning that I'm not responsible for you messing with your phone, and you should make sure you know what you are doing so that you don't brick or ruin your device. That being said, I have seen very little or no negative effects of the items that are listed.

So I would love to get some feedback as to how people think that we can continue to extend battery life on this already awesome flagship device! A few questions that I have:
Android System is using the most battery. What else can I safely disable to optimize this? Are there any that you see that I froze or removed that I shouldn't have?
Are there any other hacks that people think would be beneficial to try out?
What do you guys feel about disabling location services and/or auto-rotate?
Thanks for reading, good luck maxxing out your own battery!
Constrabus like! I've only seen up to 44 hours on my N4. Once on cm, you can pretty much guarantee at least almost 3 days with these settings.
Great sharing, I starred it for future reference, thanks

Thank you for posting the list of apps frozen and uninstalled. That said I love slide aside and wifi storage. How do you not use those?
To me I just don't see the reasoning behind Slide Aside. If I hold the home button it shows the passive running apps, and I just switch from there. But I haven't looked into it too much, what else do you like about it?
Also, how about the wireless storage, is that just an auto upload to your desktop? I use Dropbox to auto-backup my pics and videos, and music is backed up to Play Music. Most additional stuff like calendar or task list app are Auto backed to their own servers or Google's.
I'd love to hear more about the benefits of these apps, I'm always open to changing things up!

Good job!
Nicely done.
For those that think you need root to accomplish great battery, I am on track to pass 33 hrs without root. Screen @ 40%
I've found the best way to increase my battery life is to turn of wifi & mobile network location, but that basically renders a variety of apps, including Google Now, useless.
I believe it. I been averaging 18hrs every day with mine but that is being used a good bit throughout that entire 18hrs. I usually keep my screen at 25% unless I'm outside and its really sunny. WiFi and all is off and I have quite a few uninstalled apps thru titanium.

Just wanted to post this awesome battery life my phone has gotten after 4 charge cycles. This is better than my droid max I recently purchased. Anyone who says this phone has horrible battery life is either a liar or has a defective phone.
This is with 90% 4glte and brightness set to auto 75% baseline. Not turning anything off. I work a lot so screen time isn't that much but who really uses their phone for 6-8 hours a day? That a quarter of your life spent on a phone each day. Any ways great phone not much to complain about yet

You can, actually. If you use Titanium Backup, you can uninstall anything you want. You freeze apps in case uninstalling them breaks something, or it may be something you want to use in the future. A lot of the time, people will freeze an app and run it like that a few days. No issues? Uninstall the mofo.

I root uninstalled a lot of apps. Most were listed in the OP here. But I ran into 1 tiny little problem, that is causing me to factory reset and redo everything... I don't know what app it was that I uninstalled that causes this, but every time I would plug in a headphone jack or usb cable, it would show the animation at the bottom, but "pop and plug" (or "plug and pop", I forget) would force close. No other side-effects were noticed. Anyone have a clue what app uninstalled would cause this so nobody else makes the same mistake? I unfortunately did several apps simultaneously and did not notice the issue until much later.

Plug in pop is just an app that launches short cuts of apps that would use headphones. If you dont want it or the F/C just use titanium to uninstall plug and pop

Mainly because a lot of the times we freeze apps we think we don't need, and by freezing them if you find out later having that app frozen caused issues, you can simply defrost it rather than trying to locate and reinstall it.
I've not disabled as many apps as you, but I make heavy use of Greenify to hibernate apps I don't want running in the background.
I've been off-battery for seven hours. I spent about two hours streaming Jim Rome earlier in the day (I can only take about two hours of Romey) and playing with the browser for a bit over lunch. I am at 89% with an ETA of 39 hours until the battery dies.
Very, very impressed with this phone's power management.
I want someone to try and just leave the fone on standby without using it, possibly leaving it in Airplane mode lol

Debloating, what is safe to remove?

Been searching the threads and wanted to know what is safe to freeze/remove? I imagine the list for the TMO G4 would be the same for this this device?

Experimentation is key.
So far for me I've frozen anything listed as t-mobile with the filter option. I've frozen (deleting caused problem) all the Instagram Facebook (messenger too) handlers. Froze App Source I deleted the LG voicecare (only cause when I ran LG update I stupidly checked all of them) since I know I could without drama. My best suggestion is freeze first. Run phone for a bit and see if you get any errors on the screen.
This is everything that I have frozen. No issues so far. I have Nova installed as a system app, that way I can freeze the LG launcher.

With all the items you froze, do you still see the app showing usage in the battery stats? I have had devices that this occurred.

To be honest I haven't really looked at it. For whatever reason, I can't seem to get Better Battery Stats to work right. I've been having good battery life so it hasn't really been on my mind (average of 4-5 hours SOT).

Yes, but you also need the pro version of the app to freeze apps.
okay, but...
If i were to delete these apps, instead of freezing, would it blow my phone into oblivion?

You can delete all the Google and all the T-Mobile apps. Also delete AdaptClient and LTDDM, as those are behavior-tracking spyware apps.
You can delete LGPartnerBookmarksProvider which is a carrier customization package for Chrome.
Don't delete any LG apps as they're all tied into the system one way or another.
When I was making my ROM, I found that deleting LG apps would often result in FCs in random settings screens or other LG apps.

Some apps will, some won't, just make a backup before you start, that way if you break something, you can restore...
Zdeuce2 now with golden rays of sunshine
I was hoping for a script like I used on my galaxy note 4... just hook to pc and run .bat file that someone had created.. lol Oh well.. Any updates??

Where did you find good instructions to root the V10? I'm finding all kinds of conflicted posts.
freezing/deleting bloat
Hey, I'm curious how you managed to delete Google apps without ill effect. I shut off the Google suite and my phone went nuts. Particularly bothersome was the loss of voice to text and spell checker when writing text messages (with Textra). The Google keyboard and ( I don't know why there are so many voice related apps)the voice recorder and the other audible vocal apps I had to turn back on. Do you have a trick that made it possible to disable chrome without headaches?

I imagine (and I mean this as much as a question as I do a comment) that after removing apps that serve a purpose such as Google keyboard, you could restore functionality by installing a replacement app of your choosing...? At least it seems to make sense in theory.. Plz correct me if I'm mistaken ... This is the 1st device I'm debloating myself manually so no experience to back my assumption... But I would like a more seasoned opinion on the matter... Thx
