Available OSes for GEN8 (CM7, Urukdroid 1.6, Debian,...) - update 08.01.11 - Gen8 Android Development

Hi,
Ii bought my Archos device knowing it is a great developer device - anyway im not into porting linux,...
As there are many mobile OSes and i really want a "normal" linux on my 101 too, I thought about gathering all Informations about the different OSes so it's easier to choose one
Anyway this is what i know for now (will just include latest versions - unless there are different develoment stages):
Android:
Froyo (2.2 ...)
Archos Stock 2.4.82 - (changes)
UrukDroid (download, server-link, homepage, wiki, development, bugs, TV, 3G)
Urukdroid 1.1RC1 (based on FW 2.3.38) - 1.1RC2 update - 1.1RC3 kernel
develoment stopped
Cinema-Plugin enabled
UrukDroid 1.6 (based on FW 2.4.81, Android 2.2.1), Changelog
OC module included
Overclocked Kernels for UD (DO NOT USE UNLESS U KNOW WHAT U ARE DOING)
releases by Sauron are always filed at his server
releases by Sibere are always linked in his Signature
Gingerbread (2.3 ...)
openAOS Android Anoa (CM 7) - version 18.08.2011 (homepage, download, bugs)
openAOS Bull RC2
Honeycomb (3.0 ...)
we will never see - due to missing sources
ICS (4.0 ...)
ICS for Gen8 (wip, to be released)
...
other Linux:
Linux Angström
Archos SDE, version ?
Kubuntu
Kubuntu Mobile for GEN 8 Tablets, Pre-alpha Test release
Kubuntu (KDE Plasma Active) how to build
Ubuntu
Bbodhilinux (Ubuntu based with Enlightenment), version Alpha 1 (development stopped as it seems)
Ubuntu install guide
Meego
noting yet, really like too see
Debian
Debian-Archos (XFCE4 Alpha 0.3, Gnome Beta 2,...)
If u now ask - how to use them - here is the answer:
OpenAOS Multiboot
UrukDroid AlternativeOS (UD >= v1.1 needed)
or just installthe SDE and replace the rootfs.img file on the device with your deserved one (maby wont work for all OSes)
PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS FOR QUESTIONS ABOUT OSes OR FOR BUGS,... this is just for gathering information about available OSes.
Thanks
As I can't search for all those on myself I'll be happy to get some help:
love to see post like "UD 1.5B4 is out -> LINK"
and please correct me if im wrong with information provided...
Last but not least THANKS to all DEVs like Sauron, Bubu, letama, Sibere...
last changes:
- bug fixes
- Ubuntu install guide

KDE Plasma Active would be nice and smooth...
Runs on BeagleBoard with similar ARM A8.
I think it could be a nice alternative.

Cool, but I don't understand everything in Tut's.
Even could be a bit risky. Someone of the coders here should make an Image and upload it for all of us.
A Video would be nice to see the responsiveness.

UrukDroid 1.6RC4 (based on FW 2.4.65, Android 2.2.1) ?
i cant fine main topic about this rom. is it stable or beta release ?
UrukDroid 1.5 is install on my tablet

1. As the RC4 is in the developer thread, it can't be a mainrealese.
2. RC4 also implies that it's not release.
3. It is based on 2.4.80.
4. This is the developer part, so you can't expect anything here is released.

Hi,
Could you please change links for UrukDroid. Some people use installation files without even reading a bit of documentation and this makes a lot of questions later.
Please point download files to proper download file section of UD wiki
http://code.google.com/p/urukdroid/wiki/Download
and changelogs, to changelog page
http://code.google.com/p/urukdroid/wiki/Changelog
thx.

Are any of these firmware versions suitable for an Archos 70 Internet Tablet HDD version? (originally a 250Gb model, upgraded to 1Tb) - model A70H according to the recovery screen.
I'm trying to repair this, as it won't boot, but the firmware on the Archos site won't install.

I think that you need is GPU drivers.
(Someone correct me if i'm wrong)

This's the source of mik_os's Kernel.
But you can use another kernel if you want.

[28.June.2011][SDB] NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.8 [GRJ22/Android2.3.4][K: tytung_r10]

Since V2.9 no new ports from me because there are "official" versions from tytung:
http://sites.google.com/site/nexushd2android/nexushd2-gingerbread/releases
************************
previous version:
SD-port of the CLK-Build:
[28.June.2011][MAG/cLK] NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.8 [GRJ22/Android2.3.4][K: tytung_r10]
>>> Download-Link <<<
The version is almost unmodified.
Changes:
- SD-relevant adjustments
- added OI-Filemanager
This Build creates a 256MB data.img on the first start. If you want a larger phone storage, you can copy a bigger data.img in the android directory before the first start or replace the created 256MB file with a bigger one later (all previous data will be lost) or with the "update" (see below) edit the startup.txt to create another size.
older version:
NexusHD2-Gingerbread V2.7
UPDATE
Bluetooth values in my last version were wrong, if you had BT-Problems replace the rootfs.img from the build with the one from the archive "rootfs_new.7z" - also the cpu scaling governor now will be interactive with the new rootfs (as tytung recomands) - thanks tytung for the solution of this problem.
I've downloaded to have a look.
Is it OK with this to rename the folder and change the rel_path in startup.txt?
Or will this cause problems?
Dear HaPeWe . Is this a SD Build ? and can u post more info on your post , like Changelog , What is working , what is not . And some screenshot perhaps

He states it is an SD build - a port of tytung's nand build
All details will be in the link provided.
I've renamed the folder to NexusHD and everything appears to be good. Even the boot.anim blends in well as I use an Energy Winmo ROM.
I will do some more thorough testing and report back soon.
Good work
Cheers
Really good work, so far everything looks good and pretty smooth.
Any chance of keeping the key lights on until you turn the screen off?
I've just installed some apps and realised that the data.img is only 256MB
Can this be increased in a future version please?

You have to convince tytung, because I don't want to create a sub-build. This should be an almost 1:1 SD-port of his original build, also in future versions.
Thanks, will probably try this one as the NAND seems very popular! Any particular reason for removing Maps ? I'd just like to know if I can install it on my own without errors.
Also, pros / cons over AmericanAndroid?

This Rom is Very perfect for booting from WIN 6.5, low battery consumption, working fast and stable for daily use, this is the best one we can found right now, I’m much appreciated.
HaPeWe, you are excellent work.
Many Thanks,
utf8?
Great build!
But fails to mount cifs utf8 shares. There is no nls_utf8.ko in the module directory. Is it compiled into the kernel? In tytung's NAND thread it says utf8 is supported though.
BT issue
Hi,
just testing this build right now. Have not finished. First feedback to BT:
Pairing BT just works if you switch from visible to non visible mode (or vice versa).
Reconnect of BT device also just works if you switch from visible to non visible mode (or vice versa). Quite Complicated ;-(
AVRCP..not working ;-(
Battery drain...20mAh with BT on // 7-10mAh without BT
Loving this build great job and even more appreciated as I can't have band builds as I have no USB lol.
Not had any probs yet been using for 12 hours

[Q] Flash Player on the Viewpad 7

Hey guys,
any of you managed to get flash player 10.1/2/3 going on your viewpad 7? I found this cracked apk file on the net call flashplayer for armv6. It installed OK(at least seemed to be) but didn't make actual difference to the device. I still can't play facebook games, still can't play web-based flash... I've tried with different web browers but none of them would work, very sad....
I fully get it flash player only suppose to work with armv7 + but there's gotta be ways around this right??

I guess the CPU (600 MHz) and/or main board does not support Flash. It's the hardware, not Android.
EDIT: I heard that some of the mobile browsers do support flash on it own.
I think that Opera Mobile or Opera Mini do support it.
Think there is aleady flash 10.1 for our pad you can download it urself or install custorm ROM regads
Flash alone link:

I will be loading this ROM tomorrow(most probably)

Hi,
I have installed few custom ROMs already so feel quite safe... if your install prior to custom ROM eq Clockworks recovery then even if you brick pad you can recover and load whatever ROM u want...
I have now EUViewpad7 1.4 with build in flash ability and OT to 850Mhz and some tweaks...Rom works fine no issue with it.
Flash? hmm Works overally only problem I see is flash-Video--> when you try to wach it there are some color artefacts(which makes picture weird you can see video but colors get weird) or as with justin.tv browser is closing up but flash games etc works fine(maybe little slow).
Appreciate the advice.
Have 1.5 GB available but can`t install anything since RAM is down to 25 MB.

Gnash
The limitation is that the CPU only supports an ARMv6 instruction set, and closed-source Adobe Flash Player (tm) has been compiled for an ARMv7 instruction set. I do not see how a ROM update could solve that. Theoretically a ROM update could emulate an ARMv7 instruction set, but is that realistic for a platform that is mostly open source?
The more practical option would be to port Gnash to the Viewsonic devices. I cannot post links, but there is a page out there on how to build Gnash on android.
BTW, the thread is entitled "Viewpad 7", but it's also the same issue on the Viewsonic v350 smartphone.

Maybe this is a difference between Viewpad 7 and the v350 smartphone. I was able to install that 10.2 package you posted, without error, but it fails to render flash content on the v350. I went to a couple different flash testing pages, including the one on the adobe website. It displays a Lego-looking box (like the puzzle piece that used to appear years ago); it's as if flash was never installed.

Ive installed new EU 1.6 rom and then updated flash to 10.2 and all works for me like a charm no issues with youtube hi def videos and even flash videos on webs are working...so its amazing we didnt had any flash on our tabs and now all work(yeah little slow but all works) video is quite vital can watch no problem
tested on: justin.tv wrzuta.pl
regards
I have installed the latest flash 10.2
it all seems to be working swimmingly except for one app
ESPN goals
The video of footy goals actually plays well except for a message bang in the middle of the screen blocking the main action
it states
"Cannot play video
Sorry, this video cannot be played."
and closing this message also closes the playing video
I guess this is an app/software issue and as such modification is needed which is a shame
Reinstalling an older version of espn goals seems to have worked 1.6 (I could not find 1.7)
1.8 is the latest
i just installed the flash player 10.2 on my viewpad 7 but i still cant play flash. It displays the lego with a "?" inside. In fact, when i go to setting manage application, i dun see the flash player running. What can i do?
Flash doesn't work
I've installed the EUviewpad-Rom 1.7. Flash seems to be included but doesn't work. My Viewpad has ite-hardware / hw1.07. On flashbuilder.eu it shows that flash isn't running.
for those who installed flash player on viewpad 7, is it choppy when watching videos online?
Unable to use Adobe Flash
I have tried all the Flash APKs found on this site. None work - period. My Viewpad 7 is HWVer 107 and is in factory unmodified condition. If anyone is having success running any of these versions of Adobe Flash, it would be helpful to elaborate on both the ROM version and browser you are using. Any further information would be greatly appreciated.
The core issues being that Vpad7 is based on ARMv6 CPU, which Adobe excluded when designing Flash Player 10.x development, so it really doesn't matter our hardware ver. is 106 or older, and newer ones v.107 - whether it's ITE touchscreen or not being irrelevant in this case. Java is installed along with Flash Player 10.1 or 10.2 - but it simply will NOT run.
Those with non-ITE hardware perhaps are luckier as their kernel can be over-clocked to run faster, so whatever workarounds or fixes can get it to run for them.
I have a HTC Eris with similar specs. and we had 10 times development work from XDA'ers, LOL, over what's dedicated here for the Vpad7, trying various patches to get it to run - and, still N.G. (no good.) The newer devices, like my HTC Incredible 2 with better specs - 1G CPU and add'l RAM - run Flash 10.1 out of the box - been rooted & running custom ROM to upgrade it to run better & faster.
Been uninstalling, re-installing both 10.1 and 10.2 - Dolphin HD browser & Skyfox browser plus the default ones - my summary: it simply won't do it. Moving on to other Apps that can be optimized, just my 2 cents. of course.
Cheers !
P.S. However, as long as I can watch YouTube on it like now, whether it's Flash 10.x or not, really doesn't matter to me (anyway.)

[Q] What to do now ?

My Atrix is SIM unlocked, rooted, bootloader unlocked and Gingerbread installed.
What to do now ? Just to use it as a smartphone only ?
Jocking. But suggestions appreciated.
- Is it really worth to try an other ROM ?
- Is there a possibility to connect a hard disk via USB port ?
- Is there a dual boot possibility to boot additional an other Linux operating system ?
- Is there any application to remote control my Atrix from my Linux (Ubuntu) laptop as a remote computer with desktop (homescreen etc.) of my Atrix ?
( Attention not talking about remot control of computer from the smartphone)
- How could a store (move) my
text massages (Gingerbread text messages)
emails (k9 mail)
videos (Gingerbread video camera)
fotos (camera zoom FX)
bookmarks, etc ... my profile of Firefox mobile
on my external SD card ?
Hi Folks ! My questions were not jocking, but probably too many of them.
So maybe one only:
Is it worth to try an other ROM when your phone is already unlocked and rooted with the original one ?
Until you've used cyanogenmod everything else is just.....lowbrow. Download the latest stable release of CM7 from the development forums. And you'll never go back to stock again.
Sent from Hyperspace using Tapatalk
Hi Phalanx7621 !
I have heard of cyanogenmod ROMs, but to my knowledge ( http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices ) there isn't an official one for the Atrix up to now, where everything (fingerprint etc.) is running fine.
Anyway, as I never used a different ROM, I have quite some difficulties to understand what are the benefits for doing like this. For sure there are, otherwise nobody would do. Maybe the ones of you who changed the ROM could share some facts with us the still non changed ones.
Maybe I am wrong, but if I compare this action with my ThinkPads. Should be comparable, as the Atrix is a kind of mini laptop and even running with Linux (Android). Same on my ThinkPads, they are real laptops and running Linux as well (Ubuntu). - Sorry can not compare this with Windows.-
To update the Android version from V 2.2 Froyo to Gingerbread V 2.3 is like an update from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10. Usually some improvements, bug fixes and updates. Fine.
To change the ROM. Isn't like to change the distribution on the laptop ? For example to change from Ubuntu 10.04 to Linux Mint 11. Both are on the same basic. More or less the only difference is the look & feel. All applications are the same. And even Ubuntu you can make it look like Mint or vice versa. No really need to change the distribution.
Maybe this is the same with changing the ROM. The look & feel.
But what about
- boot time ? Really different with different ROM ?
- the speed ? Really different with different ROM ? But when ? To open Firefox for example ?
- the used RAM by the operation system ? Any differences ?

There is a quasi-official ROM. Actually, it IS Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 with some fixes to get it running on out Atrix. The fingerprint does not work because only Motorola ROMS have both the kernel drivers and the libraries to make it working. Fortunately, the Atrix Cyanogenmod team is working on this and eventually they will find a way to make it working.
In any case, I find that the stock rom and the stock radio still has the best battery life (in my case, still Froyo). Maybe not the best performances, but I am pretty sure about the battery life.
Update: CM7 Atrix team have the permissions to build their nightly releases on Cyanogenmod build server. I believe that they are getting fully recognized by Cyanogenmod. Therefore, I would say that they are pretty much official.

Skype Fix for the Mediapad

Hi!
I may not post in the Development part of the Forum (I have not enough posts), so i post it here. Here is the fix for the Skype problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650608
The developers should replace the Adreno grafik driver with that driver.
Regards,
Thomas
It's already using the latest drivers on the newest international release (using opengles extensions viewer it showed 2184622). I think one of the Russian rom have fixed this problem. Can anyone confirm the driver version on that rom? Maybe the problem isn't in the Adreno driver.

I don't know if the problem is only in the adreno driver (because again, the one in the mediapad latest international build already the latest one... but then again, maybe some files were mixed with the older version or corrupted? who knows). But what I do is flashing the system and cust image from OsiMood rom (from the dev section) so that I don't have to wipe my tablet. You'll lose some default apps (asphalt, lets golf, some google apps which can be downloaded again, etc..) but skype now works and with flashing only the system and cust image I don't lose any apps that I have downloaded and most if not all the settings are still in place.
Btw, the OsiMood rom is based on the russian rom, but it does have English language.
what is the latest international build? C232B002?
