Left side of touchscreen faulty? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So when I hold my finger still at the left side of the touchscreen (as far as I can), for example when dragging the youtube cursor thingy, it will start to jump around.. Anyone else having this problem?
Oh and for some reason this won't happen when connected to the ac adapter.

Used the screen check code , then click on touch

I don't know how that could indicate anything like that.. (prob just don't get it).
Anyway it is easily noticable. For example when held with the left side down when watching a youtube clip. If you then hold the cursor still while holding your finger as low as possible, it will start to jump around. Or when sliding the homescreen to the left and holding it when your finger reaches the end and it will jump around.
Just tell me if you have this problem too.

Come one, anyone?

Anyone else having this? Just hold something and move your finger to the left of the touchscreen. Mine starts to jump around randomly.. I really don't need sensor things to test it as it is just clearly noticeable. I think I'm going back to the store with it tomorrow.

With that I agree; they tried to hard to make it look pretty, and failed at making it comfortable to use. The scroll function isn't even enabled by default in half of the apps unless you tweak things yourself.
It is typical HTC; they try too damn hard, and always end up messing up somewhere.
are you serious the d pad works fine, up and down left to right. Once you install the diamond tweak and enable the scroll works even better
ok wait, I thought I only had up and down also but it turns out it's just a little odd to get used to.
Notice where you're pressing to go up and down. Now do the same to the left or right. You're not actually pressing on the rim of the circle, but just barely outside it.
I assure you it's there.
Even pressing in between your back and hangup button will make it go right.

[Q] loosy screen, volume buttons problem

I've recently purchased this great device from ebay and found out that the screen is a bit loose on the top. it's only something about 0.5mm and doesn't bother me at all. but the problem is that the volume control external button doesn't sit perfectly on the internal buttons so sometimes you press and they don't work.
I've notified ebay seller and he told me that's a known problem and that he could fix it for me. I just wonder if it's a small fix maybe I can do it on my own and save everyone the hassle of sending it back and fourth.
picture attached.
Mine does the same thing but it affects my proximity sensor. I have to push on the right upper corner when I want to hang up during a call, otherwise, phone thinks my ear is still up against the phone.

haven't tried that yet, so I can't tell if it's a problem.
I've had the same issue, both with the proximity sensor and the volume rocker. For me the top of the rocker is very loose and has to be pressed hard to get it to recognize. The proximity sensor, I found out, has a little cutout adhesive that is supposed to go between the sensor and the digitizer/lcd assembly.
Sometimes this gets shifted (for instance, when someone breaks their screen and decides it's a smart idea to replace it on their own like I did...) and you have to take care to place it back where you found it or you end up having to press the right corner of the screen to end your phone calls.
If anyone figures out how to repair the issue with the volume rocker, hit me up. I'm already knee deep in this thing, I might as well learn something new while I'm at it.

screen calibration

Is there a way to "re-calibrate" the screen or change the sensitivity?
I have found that when I need to press a button near the corner of the screen, (like on a friendstream widget to refresh), I usually have to press it several times or use my pinky.
I'm thinking either the "alignment" is off or the sensitivity needs to be tweaked (maybe my fingers are too big)
When I first started typing on the Inc 4G, I noticed that sometimes it seemed like it was missing letters I was typing. As I started using it more, I realized that my hand was barely touching the corner of the screen next to the recent apps button, since I was used to using a small phone, the original Incredible. However, once I realized I was doing that, I stopped doing it. I have to consciously make the decision to stop every time I notice myself doing it. I've only been using it for a couple days, but I'm doing it less now, so hopefully I'll stop completely soon. I don't understand why it thinks the corner of the screen should be touch sensitive, because it's almost a full centimeter away from the recent apps button.

interesting, I'll have to keep an eye on that.
but I'm trying to hit a small button on the top right corner of the screen.
I have the issue I mentioned before when I'm holding the phone in landscape mode with the capacitive buttons on the right, the base of my index finger where it meets my hand barely touches the screen about a centimeter above the recent apps button. I don't use the FriendStream widget, as I don't use social networks at all, but if the button is too small, it may be that your fingers are too big, but more likely you are touching the screen somewhere else. I only figured it out when I took my right hand away from the screen and was still typing with my left and the keys were working much easier for me.
Try taking the hand you're not using to press the button and put it on the bottom of the phone to hold it steady, then, using your other hand, only touch the screen where the refresh button is with your largest finger and see if it works. It may seem like really basic troubleshooting, but sometimes that's the way to go.
Failing that, try to go to Settings -> Language & keyboard -> HTC Sense Input -> Advanced settings -> Calibration tool
It only lets you type in portrait mode, which is kinda dumb since most typing is done in landscape mode, at least for me. It would be nice to at least have an option to do it in landscape.
Anyway, I hope one of these solutions helps.

no this isn't true.
you don't have to press hard, you have to press in the correct spot...
this phone's display is tough to get used to.
prime example, trying to exit out of a single app in the stock task manager, is very tough, and always opens the app instead of hitting the x, it's annoying, but it's worth it, IMO
but here is a vid showing that I have zero difficulties going through the set-up.
that and a little teaser of the ROM Nitsuj17 and I are working on

Well, I was having difficulties using it. I don't have fat sausage fingers, and I even tried using my pinky finger and pressing directly on it and everything after the first dot just didn't work unless I pressed very hard on it. Now that I've used it once and calibrated it, it works much easier doing it again. Perhaps it was just that the factory default calibration for my phone is just that off.

lol. I read that. I was pressing and holding for 5+ seconds with normal pressure, and it took 3+ seconds with lots of pressure. After doing this the second time, I didn't even have to hold more than 1 second under normal pressure.

Right side of screen unresponsive to touch

I noticed today when i woke up i cannot press the right side of the screen and get any kind of response. It is only about a thumbs with of the right edge but this prevents me from being able to hit send on text messages on the default messaging app and also on go sms as the send buttons are in the same general location. Is my phone just FUBAR or is there some way i can resolve the issue. Have tried power cycling and thats about it. I guess i need to know if this is a software issue or a hardware issue and if there is any way to find out and fix the problem.
I've been having the same issue actually. In the bottom right corner, anyway.
Like when I go to attach a picture to a text message, I have to hit the text box first so the paperclip button is out of the corner. I've also had some trouble unlocking with the camera or touching it from the Navbar, where it's positioned in the bottom right corner. :/

I have similar issues with that when my phone is plugged in. And my acreen often locks up kinda with the last image on the screen being the only thing you see until you reset.

I don't think I've had an image stuck to my screen yet. I have this problem even if it isn't plugged in, which is really strange. Not sure why it's so unresponsive, takes several tries to unlock/select.
And kudos for being in Portland too! :good:
Have either of you found a consistent way around the problem or a way to resolve it? Also are you running the phone in the base state that you bought it in or is it rooted / unlocked?
I just tested my phone, by opening the browser to google.com (mostly white background), all around the edge of the screen. And I can see feedback animations for all my touches around the edge of the screen. So I don't think there is any problem with the touch digitizer, at least on my phone. Phone is still stock, rooted and TWRP.
I have touch animation when I touch the bottom right corner on the lockscreen, but it doesn't always drag/ripple out. Sometimes it acts like I've pulled my finger off so I have to do it again.
Rooted, unlocked, stock.
After touch responsiveness got increasingly worse i contacted AT&T and they are sending me a free replacement since these issues seem to be covered under the one year warranty. Just throwing that out there in case anyone else gets as frustrated with the problem as I have and cant find a permanent fix.
I can confirm that I am having very similar problems... it is getting worse.
I am stock rooted and unlocked.
It is getting harder and harder to press things, fling actions (like scrolling through a list) hardly move a thing.
I just installed a multitouch visualizer and whenever I have 2 fingers on the screen and then go to cross them (start with fingers in opposite corners, move one up and the other down until they pass each other in the middle) it actually loses both fingers and then sometimes only one pops up again on the screen.
Can anybody try an app like this Play Store Link.
I've had similar results with 2 other multitouch testers.
Is it my phone, or everybody's?
----EDIT-----
Figured I would install the Base ROM (7.0>7.3) because either it was a software issue and maybe the ROM would fix it, of it was a hardware issue (I really didn't think it should be acting like that) and I would try to get it replaced.
The Base ROM fixed my issue (for now, fingers crossed).
Now using a multitouch visualizer, the contact points are always seen, even when the fingers cross.
Don't know what caused it, but it was software (at least for me).
----EDIT----
Just plugged in the charger again... now the touchscreen is acting strange again... this phone does strange things when plugged in...

[Q] Digitizer freaking out on anyone else?

This has been happening more often the past week or so.
I'm running the late-December-2012 "Energy ROM" release, and from time to time the touchscreen goes all wonky on me. It seems random but is happening more often as time goes on.
I can, for example, tap to open my Gmail account, but then holding my finger down in one spot in the message list will cause it to scroll down, scroll up, select and deselect different messages - sometimes when I tap on a message it registers somewhere else altogether.
I did apply a Skinomi skin not too long ago, so I'm wondering also if it's interfering somehow. I thought it was lotion having come off my hand once, mimicking another finger, but now it happens even when totally dry.
Anyone else find this one?
Thanks,
R
Is it plugged in or laying on a wire that is plugged in?

It is plugged in when it happens - I generally leave it plugged in at home - but not always.
Unless you count 'plugged in' as in, attached to the dock.
I pulled off and replaced the skin yesterday, I think I did a better job on the 2nd time through.

sometimes being plugged in to power source from wall or laying on a wire that has power to it will cause touchscreen to be erratic. get it away from power it will be fine.

This has started happening for me aswell at random. I don't have any skin on it or plugged in. Do you know if I can send it to ASUS to see about repairing it even though I have unlocked the bootloader?

Well - with a sample size of one, this seems to work.
I was having trouble scrolling through a large list of items, it was jumping all over - I unplugged the dock from the wall charger, and it smoothed right out.
So - thanks to whycali again!
